More mosquitos test positive for West Nile Total of 46 cases so far By Rohma aBBas

Twenty-six mosquito samples and one bird have tested positive for West Nile virus in various parts of Suffolk County, Dr. James L. Tomarken, the county’s health commissioner, announced last week. Two samples from each of Northport, East Northport, Huntington Station, Nesconset and Port Jefferson; and one sample in each of Greenlawn, Selden, North Babylon and West Islip tested positive for the virus. Five samples from West Babylon, four from Farmingville and three from Lindenhurst were also positive. All samples were collected on July 29, according to the county.

The bird, an American crow, was collected on July 31 from Port Jefferson. To date this year, 46 mosquito samples and four birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus. West Nile virus was first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. No humans or horses have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk this year. While Dr. Tomarken said there’s no cause for alarm, he urged residents to take steps to reduce exposure to the virus. Residents should eliminate stagnant water, where mosquitoes breed. Popular breeding grounds include tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots,

discarded tires, wading pools, wheelbarrows and birdbaths. In addition, residents can make sure their roof gutters are draining properly, clean debris from the edges of ponds and drain water from pool covers. Minimize outdoor activities between dusk and dawn to avoid mosquito bites, make sure windows and doors have screens and wear clothing that covers you when outdoors for long periods of time, or when the bugs are more active. To report dead birds, which may indicate the presence of the virus, residents should call the county’s West Nile virus hotline at 631-787-2200, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents are encouraged to take a photograph of any bird in question.

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is calling on the community to donate blood at its annual summer blood drive on Aug. 14. Blood donations are critical in the summer, the Port Jefferson hospital said, because demand grows with increased motor vehicle crashes and donations usually drop as people go on vacation. High schools and colleges that typically host blood drives, accounting for a quarter of donations, are also out of session. Brookhaven adopts county’s model solar code Supreme Court judge throws out Shoreham solar lawsuit By Erika karp

Brookhaven Town reached the trifecta of adopting renewable energy codes when it embraced Suffolk County’s model solar code last week. After previously adopting the county’s geothermal and wind energy codes, the Brookhaven Town Board approved the one for solar, which will permit solar energy production facilities by planning board special permit in the town’s industrial zones. According to Suffolk County Planning Commission Chairman Dave Calone, the town is the first in the county to adopt all three model codes. “Brookhaven is the place where renewable energy is moving forward,” Calone said prior to a public hearing on the matter on Aug. 6. Deputy Town Attorney Beth Reilly said the code applies to the town’s industrial districts, L Industrial 1, light industry; L Industrial 2, heavy industry; and L Industrial 4. Permitted uses in light industry include banks, agricultural or nursery uses, places of worship, day cares, health clubs, manufacturing within a building, offices and warehouse spaces, while uses in heavy industry include manufacturing of asphalt, cement fertilizers, and chemicals; junkyards; farmers markets and

stockyards. L4 districts deal solely with the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy. “The intent of this section [is] to provide adequate safeguards for the location, siting and operation of solar production facilities,” the code states. The day before the Town Board’s adoption, a state Supreme Court judge dismissed a lawsuit against the town, its planning board and zoning board of appeals that sought to overturn the town’s approvals for a solar-energy production facility in Shoreham. Eight Shoreham residents listed under the community group Shoreham Wading River Advocates for Justice filed the lawsuit in November against the town entities, along with sPower, a renewable energy company based in Utah and California, and utilities PSEG Long Island and the Long Island Power Authority. sPower has an agreement to sell power generated at a future 50,000-solar panel facility, located on the DeLalio Sod Farm, to PSEG. Many residents who live near the farm have advocated against it, saying the project is too large for a residential area. Calone said he believes the new solar code, which outlines where the solar arrays should be located, will lead to new

projects being welcomed to communities. The total coverage of solar panels cannot exceed 60 percent of the lot area and freestanding panels cannot reach more than 20 feet above the ground, according to the code, which also adds buffer and setback restrictions. In addition, the code outlines design standards for the solar panels. Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) thanked

Brookhaven Town will be waiving its animal shelter fees on Saturday, Aug. 15, in honor of a Clear the Shelter event that seeks to encourage adoptions of the shelter’s many dogs and cats. Sanks, a Brookhaven animal shelter volunteer and dog owner, said dogs like Bravo who have lived in the shelter for extended periods of time often have trouble getting adopted because of factors beyond their control like age, injury and appearance. Bravo, a terrier mix, is estimated to be between 7 and 9 years old and has cropped ears. He was originally adopted from the shelter in 2011, but when his owners fell on hard times in 2014 he was brought back and is now in need of a new home. “He has every odd against him for getting a home,” said Sanks, but despite this, “he’s very sweet and very mellow.” Sanks also volunteers at the Riverhead and Southold towns animal shelters and described herself as “a firm believer in town shelters.” She referred to the staff at the Brookhaven shelter as “an incredible group of workers.” “When a dog needs something, people use their own money to buy it for them,” she said. “Town workers, on their day off, come down to the shelter just to walk the dogs.” While the town and volunteers are trying to get more people to adopt the animals, Sanks said additional volunteers are always needed. “Volunteering is needed immensely,” she said. “Especially when you have a shelter that could hold 80 plus dogs.” Volunteers spend outdoor time with the dogs, take them on walks and give them treats, but helping out is not limited to direct interaction with the animals. Sanks noted that even things as simple as dropping off a jar of peanut butter, a toy

or a warm blanket or towel can do a great deal to ensure that these animals remain happy and healthy. “The most exciting day is when we have a volunteer meeting,” she said. “After the meeting is over, everybody goes to get their dogs and I stand in the parking lot and watch all the volunteers come out. Microbead ban gets big-time backing U.S. senator signs on to anti-pollutant movement By Elana Glowatz

A local effort to ban a popular ingredient in beauty products has support on the federal level. U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) visited Long Island recently to announce the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015, a bipartisan federal bill that would ban cosmetics containing plastic pellets called microbeads, which are frequently smaller than 1 millimeter in diameter and are found in face washes, shampoos, beauty products and other soaps. Because of their size, most wastewater treatment systems are unable to filter out the microbeads, so they are released into local waterways like the Long Island Sound. But microbeads accumulate toxins in the water, and fish and birds ingest them. Public health could be at risk if the fish are reeled in and eaten. Schneiderman reported that about 19 tons of the small pellets pass through New York wastewater treatment plants each year. Gillibrand’s bill has sponsors and cosponsors from both sides of the aisle, most

of them from the Midwest, according to a press release from the senator’s office. It is similar to a New York state-level bill of the same name, which is Schneiderman’s effort to prohibit the sale and distribution of products containing microbeads. “These tiny pieces of plastic have already caused significant ecological damage to New York’s waterways,” Gillibrand said, “and they will continue to do so until they are removed from the marketplace.” The state bill passed the Assembly in the last session but was not put up for a vote in the Senate, despite having more co-sponsors than the number of votes it would have needed to pass. New York is not alone in pushing to ban microbeads — Illinois has already given them the axe, and other states are considering similar legislation. Many local residents first heard about the issue when Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) led her colleagues to passing a law that required the county to study how a microbead ban would affect health and the economy. She commended officials for their antimicrobead effort on the national stage. “The threat posed by microbead waste is of national consequence,” Hahn said in the press release. “The cumbersome task of tackling this issue [from] municipality to municipality and state to state will never prove as effective as a federal approach.”

Adrienne Esposito, the executive director of the local Citizens Campaign for the Environment, said there are other effective alternatives to microbeads, such as apricot shells, salt and oatmeal. “The public expects facial soaps and

toothpaste to clean our face and teeth, not pollute our waters,” Esposito said. “Plastic microbeads pollute our waters, contaminate our fish and shellfish, and could end up back on our dinner plates. They are completely unnecessary.”

The Middle Country Public Library’s Centereach campus was the place to be on a warm summer night for both humans and their canine companions as they enjoyed “The Lego Movie” on a large inflatable screen.

The library’s Teen Mutt Club volunteers made bandannas and waste bag holders for local shelters and shared their community service projects with the furry moviegoers and their families who attended the event. The Teen

Mutt Club also helped by handing out refreshments. This event served as one of the library’s Mutt-i-grees Curriculum programs and as a Teen Lock-in event, since this took place after hours.

Westfield Seniors Club hosts guest speaker Legislator Tom Muratore (RRonkonkoma) was recently invited to be a guest speaker at the Westfield Seniors Club, which meets Wednesdays at the Selden Fire Department. At the meeting, Muratore introduced himself and informed the members of available county resources and services. His talk was followed up with answering questions from

the members. “The senior population makes up 19.9% of the registered voters in Suffolk County, which gives them a strong voice,” Muratore said. “It is important that their needs are heard and addressed. It is refreshing to see the Westfield seniors take such an interest in their community; I thank them for inviting me as their guest.”

The Middle Country Public Library hosted the 12th annual Island Idol, a music festival that attracted 350 community members. Sponsored by King Kullen, the Friends of the Middle Country Public Library and the Allstate Foundation, this event featured 16 talented performances by vocalists, musicians, bands and dancers who all entertained the crowd. Lively commentary and music trivia between acts was provided by six talented teen emcees, Kathleen Flaccomio, Emily McCoy, Melissa Migliano, Katie Sengelaub, Kyle Stevens and Joseph St. George. Children in attendance participated in games and crafts, and the MCPL Teen Advisory Council manned a fundraising concession booth throughout the night. The evening culminated with a touching group performance by all Island Idol performers and emcees and a group “selfie”

Four judges with music and theater background evaluated contestants’ efforts — Diana Cook, director of music and fine arts at the Middle Country Central School District; Victor LaBozzetta III, a major in percussion performance at the Eastman School of Music; Dominick Ricciardi, former sound engineer for Cove City Sound and Upper Room Ministries; and Camile Arnone, a local actress and director. Radio personalities and local sports greats alike went head-to-head in the firstever Frank Catalanotto Foundation vs. Boomer and Carton All-Stars Celebrity Softball Game held at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, Aug. 2. The event, put together by 14-year MLB veteran and Smithtown native Frank Catalanotto, was organized to raise awareness for vascular birthmarks, with all proceeds from the event benefiting the Frank Catalanotto Foundation, which supports the Vascular Birthmark Foundation. In addition to Catalanotto, former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, former NBA All-Star Wally Szczerbiak, former NFL MVP and current radio personality Boomer Esiason, co-host of WFAN’s Boomer and Carton, Craig Carton, 1969 New York Met and Long Island Ducks manager Bud Harrelson, former New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro and former Yankees utilityman Jim Leyritz were just some of the AllStars who took the field for the game. Catalanotto said he was grateful to all of the fans as well as the celebrities, television and radio personalities and local sports greats that came out to help raise awareness. “That’s what it’s all about, it’s about the

support for the foundation,” Catalanotto said. “To see these people come out, it shows that they care. I know they’re here to see a softball game, but they’re also here helping out a good cause.” “I’m very happy and very appreciative of the players who came out,” he said. “Some of these guys had to get on planes or cross bridges to get here, so I really do appreciate that.” The Frank Catalanotto All-Stars bested the Boomer and Carton All-Stars in walkoff fashion by a final score of 6-5. The eight-inning contest was knotted up at 2-2 for much of the game before the FCF All-Stars drove in a pair in the bottom of the seventh. The Boomer and Carton AllStars, thanks to some timely hitting from Esiason, tacked on a three-spot to make it a 5-4 game. The lead wouldn’t be held for long, though, as the FCF All-Stars rallied again, eventually walking off on a base hit by former Islander Claude Lapointe. “It was good because we had some lateinning drama, the crowd got into it and we were able to come back for the walk-off win,” Catalanotto said. DiPietro, who had a triple in the game, loved the atmosphere of the crowd. “This is crazy man, a lot of Islanders fans, a lot of Islanders chants,” he said. “This is a

great way to spend a Sunday morning.” Carton, who after doing his famous impression of Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, announced to the crowd that his team was “here to win.” The WFAN morning host hit an inside-the-park home run in his first at-bat, and outside of a defensive miscue here or there, had a solid day overall. Carton seemed pleased with his own performance, but satirically pointed the finger at some of his celebrity teammates imploding late. “Suddenly it’s a one-run game, we’re in the bottom of the last inning and some guys start playing differently,” he said. “I was not among them. I played consistently average all the way through the game. I thought it actually went well. I take it as a moral victory. Frank should win, it’s his event, but we’ll be back next year and win one.” Carton said he may try to mimic Catalanotto’s lineup — made up of a fair quantity of family members and former NHL players — next time around. “Next time I’m out here I’ll bring some Canadians and Catalanottos and I’ll try to win one for the good guys,” he said. Cuban brotherhood stands out on trip

Cuba is one of the most intriguing islands in the Western Hemisphere. The people have almost nothing in the way of material goods, having been thoroughly oppressed by their communist regime, but they are so happy and content with their lives. I got the opportunity to witness all this during a mission trip from the U.S. to Cuba earlier this year. There is a strong sense of community in the lives of Cubans. To provide one example, the drivers of mass transport vehicles also carry supplies, at no extra charge, that can help fellow Cubans at whatever destination they are headed. The people of Cuba work hard for what they have, and there is a unity among them because of this — even people of different professions help each other. Students who attend college are allowed access to the Internet and have email addresses, but very few others do. The students share their email addresses, sometimes as many as twenty people using one address, so that their fellow citizens can stay in touch with loved ones. I witnessed a very busy Cuban missionary from the opposite side of the island assisting a worker in mowing the lawn just because the worker seemed to be having difficulty. That is such a rare thing to see in most places, but it isn’t strange at all in Cuba. The average person in Cuba earns the equivalent of $20 per month, which isn’t nearly enough to feed a family, even though many items are cheaper there. At the end of our mission trip, we left all our clothes and supplies to give to the Cuban people. The local church distributed the clothes to families that most needed them. Usually only people with money or connections own cars down there. The very lucky Cuban families who own cars care for them meticulously and pass them down through generations. Most of the cars we saw in Cuba were manufactured in the United States in the 1950s and were imported before former leader Fidel Castro came into power during the revolution. It was amazing to see cars from my grandparents’ generation in such abundance. The original intent of my mission trip had been to build a classroom for the Las Palmas Bible Institute, a church camp in Cuba. Since Cuba is a communist country, it has no official religion, but Christianity is very strong throughout the island. The wonderful parishioners shared what little food and supplies they had with our group when we arrived. But the Cuban government decided at the last minute to revoke our building license, an unfortunate but common occurrence, so we spent the two weeks doing small jobs to make the lives of the people at Las Palmas a little easier — we rewired the buildings, repaired roads, fixed the sewage system and painted. My whole experience in Cuba was enlightening. It was an honor to be able to witness firsthand such brotherhood among people. In nearly all aspects of their lives, the people band together to survive the hardships of life under a tough regime. It will be interesting to see how this unity among the Cuban people is affected by the changes that are soon to come, with the island being opened to the western world.

Send stormwater runoff to watery grave

Just about every time there’s any significant rainfall on the North Shore, our newsroom gets an advisory against swimming in our local waters — mostly embayments off the Long Island Sound. As it issues the advisories, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services always explains that stormwater runoff increases bacteria levels in waterways, and because these little nooks and crannies of water along the North Shore do not flush out as quickly as other places, it can be unhealthy to go for a dip. Stormwater runoff is an environmental issue we talk about a lot, but it seems we are not actually addressing the problem. There’s so much pavement in our residential and commercial developments that rainwater has nowhere to go but toward the sea, and it carries with it all the dirt, chemicals and trash it passes along the way. The ideal solution is increasing the amount of permeable surface in our neighborhoods so the runoff goes into the ground instead, where it is naturally filtered.

We can do that by taking note of the locations we see to be in the most need of improvement and calling on our elected officials to install more catch basins, which absorb and help filter the runoff. We can also lobby for our municipalities — and even our businesses as well — to use permeable surfaces in parking lots or driveways. These absorbent pavements are not just fantasy; they exist and, though they are more expensive than asphalt, would save us a ton of money on stormwater and environmental maintenance costs in the future. And most importantly, no matter the cost, they would help protect the only home planet we have. On a personal level, we can help our local bodies of water by planting rain gardens on our properties, as they help absorb stormwater runoff, and by refusing to use harmful chemicals to treat our lawns. Everyone can do something to ease the burden of bacteria on our waterways. Protecting the environment is a group effort, so we all need to step up to the plate.

Situated on a high bluff ... TO THE EDITOR: A newly appointed minister to the Setauket Methodist Church in 1897, aptly described the church building as “situated on a high bluff and exposed to the strong east and north winds, with tall spire and inadequate bracing.” The Rev. Warren I. Bowman went on in great detail about the horrendous condition of both the interior and exterior of the church he was called to serve. Noted also were leaks in the belfry and the hand-dug basement that had never been finished and was in a condition that rendered it practically useless. An appeal was sent out to the congregation and others in

the area. A year later the Rev. Bowman happily reported “the people’s response was so generous that at the completion of the work sufficient money was on hand to cover all expenditures.” Through the 145 years that the Setauket Methodist Church has sat on that high bluff, there have been many changes, improvements and additions to the building. Both the Van Brunt and Norton wings were added, new organs purchased, offices added, as well as two steeples erected to replace the original one. Our most recent renovation was of our sanctuary in 2010, when wallpaper was removed and a fresh coat of paint applied. Now our congregation has embarked on a project called So All May Enter. To help make our church more handicapped

accessible, work has begun to add a wheelchair lift and wheelchair accessible bathroom. The estimated cost of this project is more than $100,000. Already many of our friends, current members and those who are no longer in the area have generously contributed to the project. friend of mine recently shopped for a dishwasher with son, age 8. He checked out all the specifications from one to the next, examining the price, checking out the Energy Star rating and comparing the colors to the other appliances in his kitchen. The salesman gave the father and son team an overview of all the features. When my friend

asked about the energy efficiency, the salesman suggested he could get one with a particular rating, but it was not that big of a deal. My friend’s son insisted, “Hey, it protects the environment. You need to tell people that when they’re buying it.” My friend does energy research, where he tries to find the most efficient way to produce energy, although not for dishwashers necessarily. He spends his days designing, developing and refining plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while keeping down the cost of supplying the energy. When he told me this story, he said he realized that his son, who didn’t always seem to pay attention to what his father said, was listening. When our kids were young, my wife and I used to say, “The recorder is on.” That was a reminder that we might be venturing into conversational areas that weren’t appropriate for our children or that we might want to

avoid saltier language. Did treading lightly around difficult subjects and avoiding curses help our children at all? Well, we’d like to think so, at least back then. Still, the way we speak to, about or in front of our children matters. That brings me to the recent Republican presidential debate at the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There was a candidate, Donald Trump, who made some pejorative comments about a moderator for the debate, Megyn Kelly of Fox News. He continued to go on the attack, even suggesting that Kelly should apologize to him for her tough questions. Even in the moment, when challenged by a woman about his perspective on women, he insisted, with some effective humor, that he didn’t have time for political correctness and that he wasn’t referring to all women, only one, with whom he has an ongoing public feud. But wait, a politician, who

wants to be the leader of our country and of the free world, doesn’t have time for political correctness? Yeah, I get it, he’s barnstorming around the country, full of bluster and self-importance, blending entertainment and outrage in one big, hairy ball. What happened to the notion of nuanced negotiations? Shouldn’t our leaders demonstrate the kind of statesmanship that enables them to discuss important matters with the leaders of other nations, without running the risk of alienating them and damaging our negotiating position? Maybe Trump, the latest guy running for president, has a corollary to President Theodore Roosevelt’s “speak softly and carry a big stick” ideology. Perhaps he believes he’ll be more effective if he speaks loudly and brashly and carries a big stick. Whatever his philosophy, it seems like the manner in which he delivers his messages isn’t exactly what we might like from a

Republican presidential debate rocks and rolls. role model for our country and for the world. Does attacking the moderator of a debate in which he’s trying to demonstrate his leadership skills underscore his effectiveness as a leader? Perhaps Trump, and we, might want to consider the lessons we teach. If he was in a store buying a dishwasher with a younger relative, would he really want the next generation to insult the salesman and then demand an apology? Whatever, Cleveland was rocking and the rest of the United States watched in record numbers.
