Exploration of wonders at Caleb Smith Preserve Naturalist Jan Christopher Porinchak will lead an in-depth exploration of the natural wonders of Caleb Smith State Park Preserve on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown on Saturday, June 18, at 1:30 p.m. Reserve by calling 631-265-1054. The walk will take approximately two hours and is not recommended for children under ten years old. The event, sponsored by Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve, is free, however, the preserve’s parking fee of $8 will be in effect. An avid naturalist and environmental advocate, Porinchak will lead participants on a walk through the many landscapes of the park, offering tips on identifying the various plants and animals that will be encountered. A hike leader for the Long Island Sierra Club, he is also an art teacher at Jericho Middle School and an award-winning natural science illustrator. Patriotism on full display at North Shore vets home BY Alex Petroski Elected officials, religious leaders, volunteers, family and friends came together Friday to honor United States military veterans ahead of Memorial Day. The annual ceremony at the Long Island State Veterans Home on the campus of Stony Brook University is special every year, but the 2016 version carried some extra significance. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the facility’s opening, and the home also celebrated the opening of their new wing on the north side of the building. The home is dedicated to serving the more than 250,000 veterans who live on Long Island. Their relationship with Stony Brook University’s medical facilities has been a winning combination for the care of veterans for a quarter of a century, providing skilled nursing services that many veterans wouldn’t otherwise have access to. “President John F. Kennedy once said that ‘a nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers,’” executive director of the veterans home Fred Sganga said as he addressed the crowd Friday. “Freedom is our cause, but freedom does not come free and many have paid the ultimate price. The America we know would not be the same if it were not for the brave men and women we honor today on Memorial Day.” New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli (D) delivered the keynote address Friday. He honored his father Nicholas DiNapoli, a World War II veteran who passed away ear-

North Shore kids meet turtles Smithtown High School East’s Alternative Arts and Animation Club attended the New York City premiere of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” at Madison Square Garden on May 22. Smithtown High School East students were invited to attend the red carpet event, where they met some of the actors, producers and cast of the film. Students watched the actors conduct interviews before the

movie premiere with several television, Internet and radio stations. Some students even had the opportunity to meet and take photos with the celebrities. Club members watched the film with the cast, crew and other fans. The audience was even surprised by a guest appearance by Vanilla Ice and the four Ninja Turtles, who gave a mini concert to the fans before the screening commenced.

Police Blotter Incidents & arrests through the end of May Drugs in Miller Place

On May 27 at about 6 p.m., a 37-year-old man from Miller Place seated in a 2009 Acura on Tyler Avenue possessed heroin, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. At the same location and time, a 46-year-old man from Middle Island possessed heroin and two different medications without prescriptions, according to police. He was arrested as well and charged with fourth-degree possession of a narcotic drug and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

While at the 6th Precinct at about noon on May 25 after he was arrested in Selden, a 27-year-old man from Rocky Point was found to possess the drug methadone, police said. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

At a home on Stanley Drive in Centereach, a 24-year-old man was found to possess cannabis at about 9 p.m. on May 25, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

How did those get in there?

A 34-year-old man from Wappenger Falls was found in possession of multiple bags of heroin at the 6th Precinct while being arrested on an unrelated charge stemming from an incident on Horseblock Road in Selden at about 10:30 p.m. on May 28, police said. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Garden-variety criminal

A statue and decorative planters were stolen from the front yard of a home on Christian Avenue in Stony Brook at about noon on May 14, police said.

Between November 2011 and December 2013, a 30-year-old man from Selden collected unemployment fraudulently, according to police. He was arrested at a home on Paula Boulevard at about 10:30 a.m. on May 27 and charged with fourthdegree insurance fraud.

Dirty job

On May 26 at the Walgreens on Route 112 in Medford, a 44-year-old man from Middle Island stole three bottles of Clorox bleach and a bottle of Tide laundry detergent, police said. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Ruthless robbery

A 21-year-old man from Ronkonkoma approached a woman near the Walgreens

At about 12:30 p.m. on May 29, someone stole a black and white BMX bike from a home on Olympia Street in Port Jefferson Station, police said.

Cable repairman?

Someone tried to exit the Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket without paying for a television and a pair of pliers at about 2:30 p.m. on May 29, according to police.

Know your parole

A 32-year-old man from Coram was in violation of his parole at about 2 a.m. on May 29, according to police. He was on Main Street in Port Jefferson when he was arrested and charged with the parole violation.

Rock-throwing spree

The rear passenger side window of a 2012 Jeep parked near a home on Avondale Drive in Centereach was smashed by someone at about 8 p.m. on May 27. On nearby Salem Road about 30 minutes later, the rear window of a 2006 Toyota was smashed and a rock was thrown through the driver side window of a 1997 Honda, according to police.

Missing drugs from CVS

Various over-the-counter medications were stolen from the CVS Pharmacy on Middle Country Road in Selden at about 1:30 p.m. on May 28, according to police.

A more than 40-year-old Long Island based company cut the ribbon on a brand new facility last Thursday. The medical product development consulting firm MIDI officially opened a new headquarters and innovation center on Main Street in Smithtown in the Village of The Branch as a place to research and develop medical technology. MIDI has worked with clients such as Johnson & Johnson, GE Healthcare, Siemens and also will serve as a resource for Stony Brook University medical students in their new home. “We strongly believe in creating growth opportunities for the medical and biotech industries on Long Island and in the greater New York area,” MIDI Principal and Huntington resident Gregory Montalbano said in a statement. He and his brother Christopher Montalbano are the principals of the Long Island-based firm which was started by their father Anthony in 1972. “Our new Innovation Center will foster new technology and product commercialization efforts for innovations obtained through academic research as well as for concepts developed by our local, national, and international commercial clients.” The innovation center is equipped with a research, design and engineering studio, a prototyping lab and three-dimensional printing capability for the roughly 30 engineers, designers, software programmers and researchers. MIDI has supported the development of medical technologies over the years including the first commercial MRI scanner, surgical devices, a partial-body MRI, a three-dimensional dental scanner and countless others. Gregory Montalbano suggested in an interview following the ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday that medical innovation could become a staple of Long Island industry in the coming years, replacing the manufacturing industry, which has slowly left Long Island, he said. Most similar facilities to MIDI’s innovation center are located on the west coast or in the Boston area, according to the firm, though the Montalbanos envision Long Island garnering that reputation in the future. “Long Island is, in my opinion, becoming a very high-tech medical and bioscience hub,” he said. “In five to ten years, I feel that it will be very prevalent and people will be coming here in order to do that type of business and it’ll just grow from there.” The look of other buildings along Main Street were taken into account in designing the innovation center, according to Kevin Harney, the principal of Stalco Construction, who served as the general contractor for the building. “The architecture of the new $5 million, one-story building reflects the colonial feel of the historic Village of The Branch neighborhood, which dates back to the late 1600s,” Harney said in a statement. “The building’s façade features brick face, columns and other ornamental architectural elements prevalent in the landmark structures neighboring the new development.” Chairman of the Planning Board of The Village of The Branch John Carro thanked MIDI and Stalco for maintaining that consistency. “What’s very impressive, and we got a tour of the inside, is the high-tech inside of the building, but yet when you go to the outside, you see it matches the 1860s façade of all of the buildings along Middle Country Road here,” Carro said. “We appreciate that design and their working with the village in presenting their building in the proper manner.” U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin’s (R-Shirley) sent a spokesperson to convey his excitement in the opening of the new facility and the possibilities it presents in the field of medical research and development. Centereach Fire Department places second in Sim Wars As part of EMS Week for 2016, the Centereach Fire Department participated in Sim Wars, an event sponsored by Northwell Health. Sim Wars is a double-elimination competition that challenges clinical health care teams to compete against each other in simulated patient scenarios. The teams are rated in areas such as

teamwork, communication and clinical decision-making skills. The winner was chosen by an audience response system. The participants from the Centereach Fire Department competed in two preliminary rounds and advanced to the final round, where they took second place. This team has never used a simulation manne-

quin before and navigated the challenge with ease. “When faced with new challenges, our volunteers know how to adapt and overcome” says Chief Robert Corley. “We are very proud of our members.” During Sim Wars, the team competed against various other teams from not only

Suffolk and Nassau counties but also from New York City as well. Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners Frank Rudilosso expressed his enthusiasm for the win. “On behalf of myself and the rest of the Board of Fire Commissioners, we extend our sincere congratulations to the team on a job well done.”

Students and writers and poets—oh my! Middle Country Central School District opened its doors to more than 400 elementary students and their families as 50 community volunteers, high school honor society students, administrators, teachers, Middle Country Public Library staff, famous Wizard of Oz characters and guest authors created a literary experience that was somewhere “over the rainbow.” Centereach High School was decorated to include an Emerald City, Munchkin Land and a Yellow-Brick Road that guests used to travel to poetry performances and writing workshops led by district teachers and visiting authors.

Parents, guardians and students participated in three of the 29 workshops offered, listened to first- through fifth-grade students perform their own poems in the Poetry Café, read the 300 pieces of students’ written work on display, met the 26 guest authors and even took home a signed copy of a favorite book. Each workshop varied in topic, including how to create a magical world and how do you get ideas to write a book. Others focused on what books should students in certain grade levels be reading and interactive options, such as create your own August holiday, poetry read-aloud and sing-along and where would you go if you could?

North Shore officials pay homage to fallen heroes Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore’s (R-Ronkonkoma) Memorial Day weekend was a busy one, attending several veterans’ parades and memorial ceremonies in the Fourth Legislative District. The first parade was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4927 in Centereach, held on Sunday. On Monday, Muratore attended the Ronkonkoma Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Ceremony, followed by the Farmingville-Holtsville Memorial Day Parade. The latter concluded with the

special unveiling of the renovated Farmingville/Holtsville Veterans Memorial Park, which includes the new Veterans Memorial wall. “I cannot think of a better way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend than by honoring those who paid the ultimate price for our great country,” Muratore said. “Freedom is definitely not free, and it is encouraging to know that our community pays much deserved homage to our current military as well as our veterans. Middle Country can’t make it past West Islip Girls’ lacrosse team falls in semifinal round By Desirée Keegan The Middle Country girls’ lacrosse team still can’t get through West Islip. In the Division I Class A semifinals last Wednesday, the Mad Dogs fell to their rival, 11-7, to mark the third season in a row that West Islip eliminated them. In 2014, Middle Country lost in the last second of the Class A semifinal game, 12-11. In 2015, the two teams paired up in the Class A finals, where the Lions edged the Mad Dogs 11-10 in double overtime. No. 2 Middle Country was hoping that this would be its year to make it past No. 3 West Islip. Although both teams continued to lose star athletes over the last two seasons, each still had powerhouse potential with returning players. For Middle Country, it was junior Jamie Ortega. She and her older sister Nikki helped the team to two of its most successful seasons in 2014 and 2015. In the semifinal game, Jamie Ortega tallied a hat trick and two assists. Junior Amanda Masullo notched two goals, sophomore Emily Diaz added two assists and juniors Ava Barry and Rachel Masullo, Amanda’s twin sister, rounded out the scoring with one goal each. But Emily Beier and Samantha Blair each scored three goals to lead West Islip. Beier actually assisted on the final play in double overtime last year for the goal that eliminated Middle Country.

West Islip moved on to take on No. 1-seeded Smithtown West in the Class A finals at Dowling Sports Complex in Shirley, where the team came from behind to outscore the Bulls 9-8. Looking ahead, the Mad Dogs graduate just four seniors. Although losing some impactful players in Jordynn Aiello, Shannon Doherty, Nicole Lattimore and Brianna Reyes, the team will return some strength on the defensive end in junior goalkeeper Emily Walsh, sophomore Emily Diaz on the draw and scoring leaders Ortega and Barry on offense.

Schooled in economics and the law, experienced in job creation, as fine and honest a person as you are likely to meet, with a clear grasp of what this district, and our country, needs in this chaotic time. Are you looking for optimism? I recently attended a Meet and Greet and met Dave Calone, who is seeking to be the Democratic nominee for New York’s 1st District in the U.S. Congress. In a confusing and muddled political season, I’ve found a candidate I can wholeheartedly support. Calone has vast stores of knowledge and experience that he is willing to share. And the icing on the cake: He is one of our own. Raised in Mount Sinai, he graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson and now lives in Setauket where he and his wife Kate —who directs the Open Door Exchange furniture program of the Setauket Presbyterian Church — are raising their three children. If elected, he will be the district’s first representative from the Three Village/North Shore area in more than 100 years. His résumé is stellar: He has an economics degree from Princeton (where he was twice elected student body president) and is an honors graduate of Harvard Law School. Calone worked as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice, helping to prosecute international corporate fraud and terrorism. It required him to work closely with U.S. national security agencies and interface with foreign governments. Subsequently, he worked as a special assistant attorney general in the NYS Attorney General’s office prosecuting health care fraud. Currently, Calone is CEO of Jove Equity Partners LLC, a venture capital firm that helps start and build technology companies. He founded the Long Island Emerging Technologies Fund, which has provided seed money to 10 new companies based on technology developed at L.I. research institutions. He wants to increase opportunities and keep future generations here on the Island. As chair of Suffolk County’s Planning Commission for the last eight years he has worked with all levels of government to protect our environment. His work on renewable energy has been nationally recognized over recent years. Through the executive committee of the United Way of L.I., he has earmarked funds to help students in underserved

Letters to the editor Kids need to learn more than just science and math

Summertime and the stealing’s easy

A short while ago I was paying for my meal in a local fast food restaurant. When my server announced the price was $17.75, I commented, “If that was a year it would be one short of a great year.” She looked at me with a puzzled expression and asked, “Why is that?” My wife responded, “1776 was the first year of the American Revolution.” I then asked my server, “What was the most important day in the year 1776?” In response, I received yet another puzzled expression. My wife, who was now standing behind me, silently mouthed the words, “July 4.” My server asked me, “Could it be July 4?” This was not a high school dropout or current high school student. This was a college sophomore. We live with all of the hype

associated with Common Core. You know, math and science are all important while civics and, to quote a Long Island junior high school principal, English are un-important. My 11-year-old grandson can not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States of America. They are written in script or, if you prefer, cursive. Script/ cursive are no longer taught because it takes too much time. But if our young people can’t read the original documents how can they judge what is or is not true? A few hundred years ago, people were executed for translating the Bible from Latin to English, German, French, etc. This was done to keep the common people from knowing what was really in the Bible and

to allow the clergy to interpret scripture in ways that solely benefited the clergy and the royals. For 26 years I have worked for the Suffolk County Board of Elections. I am currently a part-time coordinator. More and more, when the younger generation goes to a polling place to cast their vote, they have no concept of how the system works. The system must be explained to them by people who, hopefully, want to do what is right. But what if we don’t? A complete education includes English, history, civics and cursive writing. Without them, our way of life and the country we live in will surely die. But then that’s just one man’s opinion.

The Times Beacon Record Newspapers’ police blotter typically has a fair share of theft incidents that are completely avoidable, with perpetrators stealing wallets and other valuables from unlocked cars and sheds, and sometimes even houses. Although this may seem like a no-brainer, week after week, month after month, residents continue to lose cash and property left in unlocked places. Police have said summer months are among their busiest, with spikes in criminal activity and arrests. But it’s not only serious crimes that see a bump — petit crimes become more frequent as opportunity presents itself, which is where we see residents losing out on cash, jewelry and other valuables that may not be properly fortified. As we head into summer and start planning family trips and getaways, take time to secure against what could potentially impact your summer fun. Lock your front doors, sheds, garages and cars, and close and lock your windows when you’re leaving your house empty for prolonged periods. Make it that much easier to have a worry-free summer.

ll the world’s a stage. I read those words long ago, but didn’t appreciate the stage itself until recently. As a child, I struggled to wade through school books rife with flowing descriptions. Who cares what kinds of trees are outside the house, if there is a swing set near someone’s first kiss or if a fog sits heavy on a town? When I was my son’s age, I found those details as By Daniel Dunaief relevant as the cars that drove by me on my walk to junior high school. Action and dialogue meant so much more. I wanted to hear what people said or know what they were thinking.

I now appreciate the stage more than ever. In fact, I’d like to go back to Ward Melville High School and thank the stage crew for building sets that turned the stage into the Upper West Side in the 1950s or a yellow brick road. Before my husband died, I had been married just shy of 25 years, so I figured I had a dual perspective on the issue. I was not surprised By Leah S. Nostalgia can imbue a setting with emotion. I recently drove down my old block. I saw a version of me that was younger than my children

I could see myself staring out the side window of my room across a row of evergreens, letting my eyes become blurry to soften the colors of the red, green, purple, yellow and white Christmas lights down the block. If we were lucky some evenings, the snow would cause the lights to flicker. Down below those tall evergreens and just outside my front window were several bushes. During the fall, with a full moon and a violent wind, the needles on those bushes transformed into a man with a mohawk hairstyle swaying back and forth. One morning, those bushes disappeared. I tentatively pulled back the shade, where a dump truck of snow buried my menacing friend. The bushes bent over double, as if the man with the mohawk had taken a hard punch to the gut. As I squinted at the scene, I knew that I had aged but the man with the mohawk hadn’t. Yes, each setting is alive with possibilities.

eration. We all became engaged as casually as picking a partner with whom to go to the prom. We dated for two months, two years, whatever the case, but always on our best behavior and in settings like concerts and parks that surrounded us with beauty. Perhaps today’s greater intimacy lessens the surprises. The author makes a key point: That what we seek in marriage is supposedly happiness but in fact is familiarity. We seek to recreate relationships we experienced or yearned for that were out of reach in our childhoods. Those are not the relationships most conducive to happiness. Also people who feel terribly lonely, who find the thought of being alone throughout their lives terrifying, “risk loving no longer being single rather more than we love the partner who spared us that fate.” And then there is custom. Everyone married when they finished their schooling, or shortly thereafter, it seemed to us of a certain age. Indeed, my mother told me on my wedding day that I had barely managed to avoid being “an old maid.” I had just turned 22.
