Community Salutes Vets on 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM In separate events scheduled throughout the North Shore, community members gathered on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day to pay tribute to past and present members of the U.S. armed forces. A message of peace resonated throughout the towns, hamlets and villages as veterans marched, bands played and choirs sung patriotic tunes.

The Kings Park ceremony, held at Veterans Plaza on Route 25A, speakers defined the word “armistice” and reviewed the history of the national holiday that was founded to celebrate peace one year after a written agreement brought an end to the brutality of World War I, which killed 15 million people.

In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor the veterans of all wars.

In Greenlawn, Vietnam vet Lenny Salvo,

who was drafted in 1964, said in an interview that he was commanded to fire the first heavy artillery shots of the war because his last name, salvo, is a military term that means barrage of fire. He thinks of his experience all the time and has one message for the public: Stop the wars.

In St. James, people gathered for a VFW-sponsored parade and nearby at Smithtown’s Veterans Plaza, residents gathered for a ceremony organized by the American Legion and VFW. Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R), discussed his two tours of duty for the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War with St. James veteran Jack Toomey in a televised interview on “Fox and Friends.”

So, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, people paid tribute to the men and woman who served. Commemorations, however, are ongoing, and many people are paying it forward to honor and help vets year around.

Huntington Calls Special Hearings on Indian Hills Development Project Officials in the Town of Huntington have scheduled for Nov. 20 a special cluster development hearing for The Preserve at Indian Hills. The draft environmental impact statement hearing ended Nov. 5, but concerns continue.

The 55-and-over housing development is proposed to be built on the Indian Hills Golf Course in Northport and have 98 town houses, a new fitness center and an expanded clubhouse alongside the existing golf course.

The special Nov. 20 subdivision hearing was scheduled due to the public’s high level of interest in the project. The draft environmental impact

hearing was held in September, and typically that would have been the only hearing for the environmental impact report and its subdivision application. The planning board scheduled a separate public hearing in an effort to provide transparency and extend more time for the public to submit comments, according to town officials.

Other project updates include the town voting to hire an outside consultant for the environmental review process on Oct. 10. Melville-based engineering firm AECOM will be tasked in assisting the planning board in evaluating the environmental impact statement.

John Hayes, president of the Fort Salonga Property Owners Association, said they are anxious for the next stage in Preserve’s development process.

“We were glad the town extended the public comment period, the more input we can put in the better,” he said.

The association sent in 180 pages of input to the town planning board.

Critics of the development have pointed to environmental impacts and negative effects on property values, as well as concerns on watershed quality and the surrounding wetlands.

“Not much has changed [since the last hearing]. It is still overwhelmingly opposed by residents,” Hayes said. “There are pollution and environmental issues from the DEIS [Draft Environmental Impact Statement] that the developers need to understand.”

The president of the association also was concerned about the eroding bluffs near the proposed development.

Previously, the group asked town officials to place a moratorium on new developments in the Crab Meadow Watershed area, which includes Indian Hills. Others have urged the planning board to complete the Crab Meadow Watershed study before making any conclusions on the project.

“We’re hopeful that the planning board will listen to our concerns,” Hayes said.

After the preliminary subdivision hearing, there will be a final environmental impact statement hearing and then a final subdivision hearing. The planning board cannot vote on the development until the environmental statement process is complete. The application review period will extend into 2020, according to town officials.

School News School Board Approves Soil Testing for Northport Middle School

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A day that began with over 60 parents and children participating in a “sickout” protest in front of Northport Middle School ended with a public meeting later that night, where the seven-member board of education unanimously voted to begin soil testing at the school.

A crowd of concerned parents and community members packed into the standing room only public meeting at the William Brosnan School. Many parents voiced dissatisfaction about how the school district has been handling recent incidents with foul odors at the middle school, saying that the soil and groundwater testing are long overdue.

Many people blamed illnesses, such as cancer, headaches, nosebleeds, mold infections and other serious diseases, on the school’s long history of air quality issues.

Board President David Badanes and Superintendent Robert Banzer both reiterated to the crowd that according to experts, the middle school is safe for operations.

“Since 2017, we have made major capital and personnel improvements to the school and have corrected issues found in a 65-year-old building, as well conducted environmental testing and engaged experts from the Department of Health, the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Center of Long Island and the Icahn School of Medicine,” Banzer said. “In their professional assessments, all have indicated that the middle school is safe for occupancy.

Without the assurances of these professionals we would have not occupied the school.”

The district expects that soil testing and the creation of a subcommittee will quell any remaining concerns and help bring a divided community back together.

experts. Together they will work on an analysis and come up with parameters of the soil testing.

The timetable for the subcommittee’s actions has already been established. On Dec. 12, recommendations will be given to the board identifying experts that will conduct soil testing and additional analysis.

December through January, soil testing begins. January-February, assessment of soil testing results. By March, the district expects a final report, which will include recommendations given to the board.

Parent Lauren Handler called on the board to stop utilizing the services of Hauppaugebased firm J.C. Broderick, which has come under scrutiny for some of its previous reports and findings at the middle school.

She also asked for a comprehensive review of all previous testing done at the school, additional groundwater testing,

Tammie Topel, a former board member who served for six years, said she previously brought up health concerns to the board.

“I am a former board member and when I was on the board two years ago, I requested for soil testing more than once,” she said.

“Especially during one of my final board meetings, when I learned two former students had developed aplastic anemia.”

Topel, a nurse by profession, said proposals to approve soil testing at the middle school were voted down twice during her tenure.

“Why didn’t we do this two years ago?” she asked.

A number of parents also accused the board of not being up front with information about student illnesses at the school.

“I’m alarmed and disgusted by some of these things I just learned recently,” Michael Figeroura, an emergency medical technician for the New York City Fire Department and parent, said. “I find it disgusting when kids are complaining that they have headaches or smelling metallic things, they go to the nurse and all that gets done is that they check their temperature.”

In addition, Figeroura criticized Timothy Hoss, Northport Middle School Principal, for his handling of the situation.

“Who tells them [the students] after he comes into the room that there’s nothing there ... But miraculously 30 minutes later there’s an email, a text message and a phone call — that yes there was some type of smell in the air and that they are working on the ventilation systems,” he said. “I want something to be done, we absolutely need more testing now and later.”

He also called for better trained medical staff in the schools.

“For a nurse to check the temperature of a child after they complained about metallic smells, it is unacceptable,” Figeroura said.

Timothy Heck, an accountant and community member, was one of a number of individuals that proposed the idea of moving the middle school students to another building in the district, arguing that the district has the available space due to declining enrollment.

“I did a rough estimate myself and I figured from the administrative and operation costs, it costs around $2.5 to $5 million to keep one of the schools open,” he said. “What makes sense to me is that you could close one of the schools down and move the kids to this building or one of the grade schools.”

Heck cited a 2015 demographic study done by the district, where they projected that about 502 students were expected to be enrolled in the middle school in 2024 compared to 2007 when it had a peak of 908 students.

Similarly, at a board of education budget meeting in January, the district projected that the schools have lost nearly 1,165 students since the 2011-12 school year.

It’s unclear if board members are considering that option.

‘Sickout’ Raises Questions About Public Health Policies and Practices

“Answers Required,” their posters and T-shirts read.

As people shared their personal stories with reporters, it became evident that something is awry with many community members clearly lacking a peace of mind.

As the district attempts to address all of the concerns, it’s still unclear who or what government agencies or which experts will give them all the answers to all the questions that they are looking for. The district, town, county and state all have different areas of expertise and have also contacted outside authorities.

“My son was diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 20,” said Lawrence Belk.

“Within 18 months of his diagnosis in 2009, we learned that two other students were also diagnosed with the disease.”

Belk also said that he has coached soccer and “half of the kids use nebulizers.”

The district reports that the school’s air quality tests normal.

Several parents during the sickout said that their child has been diagnosed with carboxyhemoglobin, an ailment caused by carbon monoxide exposure from auto exhaust and cigarette smoke exposure.

Small amounts of carbon monoxide exposure can dramatically reduce the blood’s ability to transport oxygen, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Common conditions induced by carbon monoxide exposure include headaches, nausea, rapid breathing, weakness, exhaustion and confusion.

The district uses the site as its bus depot and stores bus fuel in two underground 4,000-gallon diesel tanks, according to former board member Tammie Topel. Inspection information on the tanks are the responsibility of Suffolk County, according the New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation press officer.

The county’s report on the tanks were unavailable before press time. The district did not say if the building is constantly monitored for carbon monoxide.

Several parents with children with carboxyhemoglobin said that their requests to be relocated for health reasons were denied because the districts air tests did not detect unsafe carbon monoxide levels.

“Brown water came out of the water fountain,” said student Lucas Yule.

The district said the discoloration was caused

by an iron buildup. Yule’s mother Tracy Muno said that the school sent home a letter explaining that it was flushing out its drinking water pipes.

Yule also attended classes in the K wing, where foul odors were most recently reported.

“It smelled like puke,” he said.

Other people complained that the building smells like mold the minute you walk in the front door. The hallways in the school are known to flood.

A letter dated Aug. 17, 2018, from New York State to the district superintendent has identified the chemical pesticide chlordane, which was banned 30 years ago, around the buildings perimeter. The state concluded, based on information from 2000, that it did not adversely impact air quality inside the school. Though two dust samples on windowsills in classrooms detected it in “low levels,” subsequent cleanings eliminated the chemical found on the windowsill.

As previously reported [“Northport Families Plan ‘Sickout’ in Protest,” The Times of Huntington, Nov. 7], parents have identified 18 children diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia in the last 10 years. A state public health assessment is pending with results expected in early 2020.

Former teachers have surveyed former staff and found 33 with cancer.

The district said that it understands how issues surrounding environmental matters are unsettling. Since all testing has indicated that the building is safe, the district said in a letter to parents that its subcommittee will address the more important task of bringing the community together to build consensus.

Obituaries Bruce Hunt

Bruce Hunt, a retired Northport High School social teacher and department chair, passed away on Oct. 9 at the age of 86. Bruce is survived by his wife Marcia, his sons Christopher and Peter, daughter Eliza Furtado and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter Sarah.

At Northport High School Bruce was an educational innovator, designing and implementing unique classes and promoting novel teaching methods. Classes Bruce helped create are still being taught at Northport High School today.

From the early 1960s Bruce was an active civil rights leader, serving as head of the Fair Housing Association of Huntington and chair of the Huntington Human Relations Committee. In 1965 Bruce was awarded a John Hay Fellowship at Northwestern University, which took him to Chicago for a year, during which time he traveled

to Alabama to take part in the march from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1970 Bruce temporarily left Northport and moved his family to Greece, teaching at the American Community School for six years After retiring from Northport High School in 1993, Bruce and Marcia took positions at the American Embassy School in Damascus, Syria, where they lived for the next five years. In 1998 they permanently retired, moving to Skiathos, a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. In 2014, Bruce and Marcia returned to the U.S. and settled in Brant Rock, Massachusetts, living in Grey Gull – a cottage on the water that has been in Bruce’s family for nearly a century.

Nicholas Economides of Centerport, formerly of Florida, died on Oct. 29 at 81 years of age. He was the beloved husband of Aspasia; loving father of Maria Markowski and her husband Christopher; beloved grandfather of Stephen, Aspasia and Nicholas; dear brother of Kalliope Papantoniou and her husband Antonios and the late Emanuel and his wife Julie. Joseph V. Malfi of Commack died on Nov. 2 at 89 years of age. He was the beloved husband of the late Frances; loving father of Louis Malfi, Christopher Malfi (Natalie) and Laura Colombo (Jeff Schneider); cherished grandfather of Samantha, Erin, Tony (Thomasina), Joe and Nick; fond brother of the late Nicholas Malfi. Wheels For Wishes

Members of Northport Middle School’s Community Service Club got their hands dirty at Valley Grove Beach in Northport on Nov. 4. Nine middle school students met at the school’s main entrance and loaded supplies into a van, supplied by Youth Directions and Alternatives, or YDA – a nonprofit community service organization dedicated to serving youth and their families in the Elwood, Harborfields and Northport-East Northport school districts.

The students spent two hours walking the shoreline, picking up trash, including bottlecaps, plastic bottles, balloons and more. Additionally, they worked to winterize the beach by bundling brush and raking leaves.

“They are eager to spread sunshine everywhere they go and ensure that our shores always match our spirit,” Danielle Cardinale, one of the club’s advisers, said.

In the past, the group has partnered with the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative and Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center to provide the local organizations with handmade blankets.

“It’s a great way for the students to give back to their community,” the club’s co-adviser, Linda Dillon, said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is charging a Commack company, Aventura Technologies Inc., and seven current and former employees with allegedly selling Chinese-made electronic equipment with known cybersecurity vulnerabilities to the federal government and private customers, while falsely representing the equipment as made in the United States.

The individual defendants charged in the alleged scheme include Northport residents Jack Cabasso, Aventura’s managing director and de facto owner and operator, and his wife Frances Cabasso, purported owner and chief executive officer. The Cabassos were also charged with money laundering proceeds from the alleged schemes and fraud for falsely representing Frances Cabasso as chief executive of Aventura to gain access to government contracts set aside for women-owned small businesses. The government froze approximately $3 million in 12 financial accounts that contain proceeds from the alleged unlawful conduct and seized the Cabassos’ 70-foot luxury yacht Tranquilo, which was moored in the gated community where the Cabassos reside.

“As alleged, the defendants falsely claimed for years that their surveillance and security equipment was manufactured on Long Island, padding their pockets with money from lucrative contracts without regard for risk to the country’s national security posed by secretly peddling made-in-China electronics with known cyber vulnerabilities,” stated U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard Donoghue in a release.

In addition to Aventura and the Cabassos, the company’s senior executives Jonathan Lasker of Port Jefferson Station, Christine Lavonne Lazarus of Shirley and Eduard Matulik of North Massapequa were charged in the complaint, along with Wayne Marino of Rocky Point, a current employee, and Alan Schwartz of Smithtown, a recently retired employee.

If convicted, the defendants each face up to 20 years imprisonment on each charge of the complaint, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. No trial dates have been set, according to John Marzulli in the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The attorney for Frances Cabasso was out of town. Jack Cabasso’s attorney did not respond before press time to messages left on his answering machine.

“With the arrests, the defendants’ brazen deceptions and fraud schemes have been exposed, and they will face serious consequences for slapping phony ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ labels on products that our armed forces and sensitive government facilities depend upon,” Donoghue said.

company through a network of shell companies and intermediaries, including transferring hundreds of thousands, and in some cases, millions of dollars into an attorney escrow account belonging to an unnamed Long Islandbased law firm, where the funds were used to purchase homes, in some cases for relatives.

Remembering Vets Thanks for your Support Each and Every Day

Veterans Day events across Long Island have inspired children to sing, bands to play, politicians to speak and servicemen to march in parades.

Many Long Islanders came out to exhibit unwavering support for veterans on this national holiday. But with so many veterans facing hardships, such as food insecurities, joblessness, homelessness and health issues — some servicerelated — more needs to be done each and every day.

There are many ways our readers can help the men and women of the armed forces long after Veterans Day is over. Long Island organizations are always looking for help, year-round, whether it’s donating time, money, clothing or gently used items.

Here are a few groups, where you might lend a hand: • Long Island Cares Inc. — The Harry Chapin Food Bank: This Hauppauge-based center has been helping veterans, military personnel and their families since 2010.

According to the nonprofit, more than 1,200 veterans per month typically receive support from its regional food bank through many of their programs. Long Island Cares will provide 500 veterans with holiday meals this year. The food bank is able to do this in part thanks to an $11,000 donation expected from Steven Castleton, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army. Long Island Cares also offers the Veterans Mobile Outreach Unit, the VetsWork program and Military Appreciation Tuesdays where all Long Islanders can help by donating food items or money.

• United Veterans Beacon House: Headquartered in Bay Shore, this organization provides housing throughout Long Island for veterans. According to its website, on any given day more than 255 men, women and children throughout the tristate area have received services ranging from help with homelessness to treating PTSD, addiction and more. The organization can always use coats, gently used clothing and furniture.

• Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University: Located on SBU’s west campus, interested people can help out by assisting the home’s residents during their recreation programs and trips, or simply by sitting and talking with the men and women.

• Northport VA Medical Center: The VA presents opportunities where community members can volunteer or donate their time or money. A cash donation can be used by the VA to buy items for patients including hygiene products and refreshment supplies. The hospital also collects items such as magazines, coffee, and new or gently used clothing.

Some veterans are doing well, but sometimes they could use a little company. Many people at the senior centers and retirement homes would welcome a visit, so they can share a story, or have someone even record it for future generations.

Long Island has the highest concentration of vets in New York state. These men and women are our neighbors. Make some time to find a vet in your community.

In his reply in the Oct. 17 Village Times Herald [“What Trump supporters believe in”] to William Schaefer’s Sept.

26 letter [“The mystery of Trump’s loyal base”], letter writer George Altemose, with his usual condescending false bonhomie, spends the first column telling us what Schaefer did not say and calling his analysis “gratuitous and erroneous.”

The next two columns reintroduce us to President Donald Trump’s alternative universe. Claiming Trump and Trumpists believe in the rule of law, he first cites one of Trump’s most egregious violations of U.S. law and (Senate-ratified) international treaty, followed since 1967 and reinforced by the 1997 Flores settlement and 2015 law, that asylum seekers, regardless of how they came to the U.S., were not criminals: Attorney General Jeff Sessions (R) reversed this policy in 2018, so that immigrants’ children could be kidnapped and scattered God knows where. Altemose

then irrelevantly and erroneously discusses the Second Amendment to the Constitution, clearly ignoring its leading clause and what James Madison and Alexander Hamilton thought about “well-regulated militias.”

Trump clearly despises the Constitution.

He calls the emoluments clause “phony,” systematically rejecting Congress’s constitutional oversight and subpoena power, actually claiming recently in federal court (so far unsuccessfully) that, as president, he could not be investigated or prosecuted (by anyone, I would add), even for shooting someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue. Trump routinely calls all who oppose him “liars,” “human scum” and “traitors,” including the diplomats who testified to his abuse of power and violation of election law in pressuring Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, not to mention his betrayal of the Kurds that allowed Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to carve

up northern Syria.

In the third column of his letter, Altemose states, “[Trumpists] recognize the great strides [sic] we have made in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.” This from a man who has, in this newspaper, first denied that warming and climate change were occurring, then that CO2 was accumulating, then falsely denying that industries were the major contributors to the undeniable, huge increase since about 1970. This while his hero was gutting every regulation limiting fossil-fuel-burning pollution, from coalfired power plants to car fuel efficiency, promoting oil drilling in the Arctic, etc.

Trump also greatly relaxed rules on fracking and concomitant methane release: Molecule for molecule, methane is about 50 times more potent as a greenhouse gas, although its atmospheric concentration still contributes only a small part to global warming.

While Washington, D.C., is hallmarked today by unprecedented divisiveness, with House Democrats trying to take down a sitting president, Congress has the opportunity to rise above politics, work together, and deliver a decisive win for the American worker by ending the North American Free Trade Agreement and passing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, in 2018, the state of New York alone exported $20.3 billion to Canada and Mexico, including top exports such as metal products, machinery, computer, electronic products and more.

The ability to rebalance and modernize trade between these vital trading partners will mean freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in New York and all of North America.

In fact, according to the United States International Trade Commission, the ratification of USMCA would mean 176,000 new jobs and $68 billion in new

economic growth. This boost is thanks to the inclusion of key provisions that level the playing field for American workers.

USMCA makes new enforceable labor standards a core part of the agreement, improving wages and labor conditions all across North America. Its innovative rules of origin will encourage more goods and material to be manufactured in the United States and ensure the benefits of USMCA are targeted at North American workers.

In modernizing trade in a 21st century economy, USMCA provides strong and effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights critical to driving innovation while supporting American jobs.

Negotiations on this trade deal with Mexico and Canada were completed over a year ago and has been given the green light by our neighbors to the north and south.

Unfortunately, there’s only one major obstacle facing this important trade deal — Congress — but not in the way you might think.

In this polarizing time, you may be

surprised to learn that USMCA has wide bipartisan support — enough to pass Congress through both the House and Senate. However, in order to pass Congress, first there must be a vote. There are times when we have to uncomfortably confront and debate important issues where there is disagreement and that’s OK, but where we can find common ground, we should be more than eager to do so.

Unfortunately, House Democratic leadership has been dragging its feet, refusing to put USMCA on the House floor for a vote and smothering potential further economic growth.

Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed unprecedented economic growth all across our great nation. House leadership must immediately bring USMCA to a vote to ratify this vital trade deal, level the playing field for American companies and provide a well-deserved victory for the American worker in New York and across the country.

Caught Between a Social Dog and a Smelly Place

ou know the face dogs make when they’re taking care of their business?

I’m not talking about number one. I’m talking about the big whopper: number two.

For many dogs, I imagine that is the equivalent of the human concentration face, as we ponder everything from what we should have for dinner, to the best route home in a traffic jam, to the best use of our D. None time on a Friday night when we’re of the above exhausted but

My dog must know that I’m watching him closely because every time he finds exactly the right spot to release the contents of his bowels, he turns his back to me. Before he enters his squatting position, he looks back over his shoulder to make sure no one or everyone is watching him. He’s easily distracted in the moment of separation from his solid waste.

I respect his wishes and give him his moment of privacy once he starts the process.

Now, of course, much as we might watch them as they relieve themselves, I know that they watch us closely, wondering why we’re so meticulous, or not, as the case may be, about scooping up everything they’ve dropped.

My dog still seems to think that he’s doing sufficient cleanup duties by kicking a few blades of grass in the general direction of his creation.

He starts tugging on the leash immediately after that, sending a nonverbal signal from his neck to my hand, as if to say, “I got this one, let’s move to that flower bed where Marshmallow left me a

secret scented note.”

As I bent down recently to clean up his mess, he saw one of his favorite couples. That’s not exactly a fair characterization, as almost any combination of two people would immediately rank among his favorites if one or both of them came over to him and rubbed his stomach while he turned over on his back and dangled his paws in the air, as if he were at a canine nail salon. The challenge for me, as he was pulling, tugging and twisting on the leash, was to do the impossible: Chat with his human friends, keep him from knocking one or both of them over with his enthusiasm and politely scoop up his poop.

I waited for a moment to retrieve my retriever’s droppings, hoping that he’d calm down enough to allow me to bend my knees and lift the boulders from the ground. No such luck, as he seemed to be playing twist-theleash-around-the-human-legs game.

One of the many sensory problems with

my dog’s poop is that the longer it remains in place, the more it seems to spread out and sink into the ground. Knowing this, I was eager to bag it and to move on during our walk.

Just as the couple finally disengaged from my dog and his leash, another dog and his owner appeared, causing my dog’s tail to wag so violently that it looked like those whirling propellers on an old airplane. While my dog darted and retreated from his much bigger and more mellow friend, I got farther away from his droppings. In the back of my mind, I wondered whether I could, just this once, leave his biodegradable droppings where they landed.

When the other dog and his owner took off, my dog and I returned to the expanding pile.

I’m convinced that my dog watched the entire pickup routine with rapt fascination, knowing he’d succeeded in extending the process into something considerably more challenging for the human scrunching his nose at the other end of the leash.

The Beauty and Pleasures of the Croatian and Montenegro Coasts

C

ontinuing our sailboat-and-diesel cruise down the Dalmatian Coast on the Adriatic, we next stopped in Split, the second largest city in Croatia. Again, located against the backdrop of steep limestone mountains, Split is particularly known for its beaches and Diocletian’s Palace. Built for the Roman emperor, Diocletian, at the turn of the fourth century, and built like a Roman military fortress, the palace was at one time the home of thousands of inhabitants and its 200 buildings are surrounded by white stone walls.

Today, the palace is a sprawling Romanesque destination spot for tourists, and it also offers bistros, hotels, shops and a cathedral, some of which are underground.

pires throughout the centuries, including that of Austria-Hungary and Venice. Its importance, because of its coastal location and proximity to both Europe and the East, was as a trading center. Now it is a picturesque stop on the Dalmatian Coast.

With the mountains along the shore getter ever steeper, we cruised on to Dubrovnik on the southern coast of Croatia. The Old Town is surrounded by massive walls, extended until the 17th century, and features fabulous examples of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture.

Paved with limestone and lined with shops and restaurants, the city is built along the shore and up the sides of the mountains, a natural magnet for photographers. There is even a cable car to ascend the undeveloped upper mountainsides.

We rode back down in one such car at sunset, marveling at the beauty of the city as the lights came on below us in the houses and shops, and on the many boats in the distant harbor.

Dubrovnik is particularly known for its wealth and its diplomacy. The first was much the result of the second. During the many centuries of warfare and strife among the surrounding empires, the rulers of Dubrovnik,

established along the doge and city council pattern of Venice, were able to avoid invasion.

They paid tribute to the sultan of the Ottoman Empire and to others throughout the years by using the wealth they accumulated from their favorable trading position along the coast and from the sale of their precious natural resource: salt.

Further evidence of their diplomatic skill extends even to the American Revolution. They were able to provide ships that carried pelts from Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York to Marseilles, France, because they had gained the status of safe passage from the colonists and were not fired upon during hostilities.

Slave trading was abolished in Dubrovnik, then part of the Republic of Ragusa, as early as 1418. The city, along with its neighbor to the north, Split, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. And although Dubrovnik was heavily shelled in the early 1990s from Bosnia-Herzegovina, the city has been carefully rebuilt to authentically reflect its medieval and renaissance history and architecture.

reconstruction has replaced the demolished tops and roofs. Dubrovnik is the pearl of the Adriatic and the city that attracts the most visitors to Croatia.

Last along the coast is Montenegro, named by the Italian sailors as “black mountain” for the steepness and hence frequent cloud cover that blocked out the sun above the mountainsides. Montenegro is a republic and offers tourists some of the most rugged terrain in Europe.

There is much wild greenery and most of the areas have only one lane roads. We visited an olive oil farm while there, enjoying sight of the ancient methods of making olive oil compared now with computerized processes.

On the way, we stopped to overlook the Bay of Kotor, a strategically important site of great natural beauty. Though not a member of the European Union yet, it is the government’s goal to join by 2025. Nonetheless the country uses euros and looks to develop into an elite tourist destination. At this time, its economy is dependent on direct foreign investment, and the Chinese and Arabs are competing there for developmental control.
