Incumbents Rule: County Dems Keep Majority, GOP Keep Control in Huntington

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM As the two political parties settled into their respective election night venues Nov. 5, both parties wondered if they could break the status quo and majorities in both town and county.

Though, for the most part, the situation in both remains the same after a long and sometimes brutal campaign season.

At Stereo Garden in Patchogue, where many Suffolk Republicans gathered Tuesday night, county Republican Committee chairman, Jesse Garcia, got up on stage and spoke like a DJ trying to hype up the packed crowd.

“The Democrats in Hauppauge are sweating because of you,” he said, pointing to the crowd.

Likewise, Suffolk Democratic Committee chairman, Rich Schaffer, was much in the same way at Hauppauge, coming out and asking, “Are there any Democrats in the house?” to a round of cheers and applause.

In the most profiled race of the year for Suffolk County Executive, Democrat Steve Bellone won handily over his challenger, county Comptroller John Kennedy Jr. (R) with 55 percent to Kennedy’s 43 percent. Libertarian candidate Greg Fischer gained just 1 percent of the overall vote.

Bellone was greeted by enthusiastic cheers at IBEW Local 25 Union Hall in Hauppauge.

“It turns out that the voters have decided that there is more work for us to do here,” he said.

“This will be my third and final term as county executive, I don’t know what the future holds but it entirely possible that this could be my final race for public office. … If that is the case I must give one final thank you to the person who has been with me for every race that I have won,” referring to his wife Tracey.

He also thanked his opponents Kennedy and Fischer.

“I look forward to working together to build a better future for Suffolk County,” Bellone added.

Kennedy blamed the incumbent’s near $2 million war chest for the loss, along with negative campaign ads he said targeted not only him, but his wife and children.

He promised he would continue to be a financial watchdog for the county, saying he thinks the county will enter a financial death spiral it may not be able to pull out of.

“The good news is, I get to keep doing the job I love, being comptroller,” he said. “There’s no lack of fraud waste and abuse in Suffolk County, which we demonstrated the past five years.”

Garcia announced a 62 percent victory by county Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) against Democrat Janet Singer, by mentioning Trotta’s propensity to stir the pot. Ever the firebrand, the Fort Salonga resident did not disappoint, getting to the microphone and calling the Conservative party “corrupt,” adding, “This is

Schaffer spoke on the incident.

“If you wanted to see probably one of the most despicable races in Suffolk County, it was the race that took place in the 16th L.D.,” he said. “Let me tell you something. Berland thanked her supporters, staff and volunteers: “I’m grateful to the residents of the 16th District who have confidence in me to represent them for the next two years.”

William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) easily conquered the vote against Republican challenger Garrett Chelius by 11,998 votes to 6,599.

Chelius was brought up on stage for consolation, and Garcia lauded him for his work in campaigning.

County Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset), wife of John, easily beat her opponent, Democrat Margot Rosenthal, 65 to 35 percent.

“We could not have done it without every single one of you,” Leslie Kennedy said, adding, “While [our party] didn’t get everything we wanted this time, we’ll get it next time.”

For the 16th District, Susan Berland (D-Dix Hills) won out against several-time Republican challenger Hector Gavilla by 54 to 46 percent. The race became extremely heated, with allegations that Gavilla intimidated Berland at a local meet-the-can-

It’s status quo in Huntington. Voters reelected incumbents to fill seats in the county Legislature and town council.

The popularity of Joan Cergol (D) shined through on election night, maintaining a clear voter count lead as district results were reported.

Eugene Cook (R) eventually took back his seat for town council, but early on election night it looked as if challengers Kathleen Cleary (D) or Andrea Sorrentino (R) might unseat him.

“It’s been quite a journey,” Sorrentino said.

“I’m just a guy off the street who decided to run and became a strong contender in this election.”

In the end, Republicans maintain control of the town council with the same people representing citizens. And with Steve Bellone (D) cinching the county executive for a third term, it’s government as usual until the next election cycle.

The big change in Huntington: Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia, who served for 40 years, passes the baton to her son Andrew (R-East Northport), a state Assemblyman for 17 years. He stays in state office until Dec. 31 and assumes his role as town clerk Jan. 1. “I’ll be working two jobs for the rest of the year,” he said. “The first thing I’ll do is help my mother clear off her desk.”

He expects to leave state government with impact. On Nov. 1, he requested that the state Department of Health conduct a longitudinal study for the Northport Middle School, where students, teachers and staff have reported for decades poor air quality, enough to make people seriously ill. Some people blame the building for the school community’s high cancer rates and other rare illnesses.

Raia’s vacant state Assembly seat could trigger a special election. The process, Raia said, doesn’t require a primary. The governor, Andrew Cuomo (D), however, may opt to skip on a special election, since 2020 is an election year. The governor has 77 days from Jan. 1 to decide, according to Raia.

Northport Families Plan ‘Sickout’ in Protest Community Calls for Closure of Northport Middle School

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM November 7 should have been a normal school day at Northport Middle School, according to a letter that the district sent out to its families on Tuesday. However, community members organized a protest, called a “sickout,” for 8 a.m. Thursday morning because of ongoing concerns that date back decades with air quality issues in the building.

Most recently, a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system installed in 2018 is being blamed for causing what the district calls “unpleasant odors” in certain wings of the building. That situation, the district states, has been addressed. After inspections, it found no visible cause for the problem. It has attributed the odor to heating elements being used for the first time and debris captured in drip plates on the building’s roof. No evidence of carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, airborne particulates or mold was found in its air sampling, the district said.

However, children were complaining of “dead animal smells” that caused headaches, coughing and vomiting, and after decades of ongoing health concerns, parents, retired teachers and other community members are calling for stronger action.

“The building needs to be closed,” Tara Mackey said in a telephone interview. “No question about it.”

Her child’s blood work, she said, identified a clear pattern of carbon monoxide exposure that spiked during school sessions and cleared during school vacations. The family ultimately moved last June in response to the concern after what she calls a two-and-a-half-year ordeal.

More than 600 students attend Northport Middle School on Middleville Road. The district did not respond to repeated requests for information on the number of students that have fallen ill from the latest air quality concerns at the school. People interviewed for this report and state on Facebook that their children in the past have suffered with nose bleeds, chronic coughs to the point of vomiting, asthma and headaches.

Parents, who have conducted their own informal study, have identified 18 students who were diagnosed over the last 10 years with leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia, all rare diseases often caused by environmental exposures. Four children, they say, have died.

New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R-East Northport) has asked the New York State Department of Health to conduct a longitudinal study in response to the concerns in a Nov. 1 letter. Earlier this year, lawmakers requested studies, when they learned that five recent Northport High School graduates from the same graduating class were diagnosed with blood cancers. That study is ongoing.

“We are continuing our review of cancers reportedly developed among former students of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District,” said Erin Hammond, press officer for the state health department. “We look forward to sharing our findings with the community in early 2020. Any further investigation will depend on the findings of the ongoing review. Again, genetics, lifestyle choices and environmental exposure histories are all potential contributing factors for cancer and are taken into consideration in incidence investigations.”

Former teachers have also reportedly fallen ill. John Kobel said that he has heavy metal contamination and occupationally induced respiratory disease after working in the science classroom in the middle school, where he said chemicals were improperly stored in a closet cesspool. The sinks’ drains, he said, also lacked traps as code dictates. The former teacher surveyed about 200 to 300 staff members and learned that 33 have cancer.

Government officials have said in telephone interviews that they want to avoid public hysteria.

But the lack of adequate oversight has been a concern. Some people say that there is a cover-up. They say that district officials have not completed shallow and deep soil and groundwater testing on-site or published copies of the inspection reports for two 4,000-gallon underground storage tanks that store the diesel fuel for the districts buses, which refuel at the same location. They also wonder, when prompted, why the district decided against comparing the reasons for health office visits at the district’s two middle schools. They worry about underground plumes and exhaust from idling buses at the district depot on-site. There’s also been concerns about mold in the building.

The site is also roughly two miles from the Covanta plant, a facility that burns 750 tons per day of municipal waste from residential, commercial and industrial sources. The

facility, which began operations in 1991, also incinerates the combustible portion of construction and demolition (C&D) debris, light industrial waste, shredded tires, sewage treatment plant sludge and other nonhazardous industrial waste streams onsite as approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on a case by case basis.

Covanta Huntington, also known as the Huntington Resource Recovery Plant, is a major source of air emissions in the region and is considered among the largest in New York.

The region’s air quality for oxides of nitrogen and VOCs exceed safe standards, which causes asthma and other respiratory ailments. But the facility’s emissions are within all permissible limits set for the plant by the DEC. “It’s just not possible for Covanta to be a factor,” said James Regan, media relations director. “Other schools, the Fifth Avenue School, Bellerose Avenue and Commack Union Free Schools are also close by, and they have no odor complaints there.”

Prevailing winds, Regan also said, blow its emissions in different directions. The company, he said, will gladly host a site tour to community members to show the facility works and cannot possibly be the cause.

The Suffolk County Department of Health states that schools fall under the state’s jurisdiction. The state department of health

states that “local school districts are responsible for monitoring air quality in its schools.” The state health department added that it’s available for technical assistance, if requested.

Through its public relations firm, the district states that it has reached out to the state for assistance.

In the past year, the school has changed its refueling schedule for buses on site, renovated wings of the school, removed hazardous material stored on-site below classrooms and installed new ventilation equipment, among other actions taken.

The district stated in its Nov. 4 letter that the school board will discuss and approve testing and form a committee to further review the situation at its Nov. 7 board meeting. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at W.J. Brosnan School, 158 Laurel Ave., Northport.

The Facebook page Close Northport Middle School Long Island, New York states that more than 50 people signed up to attend the “sickout.” They are calling on kids to wear blue to school, if they plan on attending classes to support the cause.

New Breakthrough Lyme Vaccines Under Development

Lyme disease, the increasingly common tick-borne disease, may soon be preventable.

Experts from academia, government and industry have been discussing at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Banbury Center the benefits and scientific feasibility of developing a vaccine that would essentially stop the infection in humans.

The highlights of those discussions are summarized in a new study published Oct. 17 in Clinical Infectious Disease. Its conclusion: “We are now positioned at a crossroad where advanced technologies allow for application of new genetic strategies for immunizations, possible identification of new immunogens, and repurpose of proven vaccine candidates not only for humans but also for domestic animals and environmental reservoirs.”

In laymen’s terms: New techniques are there, it’s creating a lot of excitement and there’s hope.

The study is the culmination of more than 3 years of meetings held at the lab, where the most promising strategies for counteracting the infection were discussed.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium transmitted through the bite of an infected tick.

Traditionally, vaccines have been used to treat infectious diseases and rely on human antibodies to attack the germ. One of the new vaccines, which might be used in combination with traditional techniques, actually impacts the tick.

“What was discovered several years ago, to everyone’s surprise, a Lyme vaccine worked inside the tick itself and inactivated the Lyme bacteria. Newer vaccines are being designed to disrupt the mechanism for transmission of the Lyme bacteria from tick to human,” said Dr. Steven Schutzer, one of the study’s lead authors.

Researchers cannot speculate when the vaccines will become publicly available, but they said they feel encouraged that they are in the pipeline with some trials underway.

Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics, such as doxycycline, and is most successfully eradicated with early diagnosis.

The only preventative measure to date, the researchers note, is to simply avoid tick bites.

That strategy, though, has been ineffective at stopping the disease’s prevalence. Each year, more than 300,000 people are diagnosed with the disease. In Suffolk County, 600 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease, the highest rate in New York State.

Lyme disease symptoms include fever, fatigue and headache, symptoms that often mimic other illnesses. It is often diagnosed by its characteristic bullseye skin rash, but not all cases present with a rash. Left untreated, the disease can infect the joints, heart and nervous system. Some people suffer from a post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome and have trouble thinking six months after they finish treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Former Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher was recently diagnosed with

meningitis, induced she said, by a severe case of Lyme disease. After hearing other people’s stories about how Lyme disease can cause major illnesses, even a heart attack, she said a vaccine would be welcomed.

During the Cold Spring Harbor meetings, a recognition emerged among participants that an effective vaccine was an important public health tool and the best path to follow to counteract the disease.

Schutzer emphasized, though, that getting vaccinated for Lyme disease, a noncontagious disease, would be a personal choice, rather than a public health mandate.

“When the pathogen is highly contagious, vaccines are most effective when a large population is vaccinated, creating herd immunity, and leading to the protection of the individual and of the community,” the researchers state in the study. “A vaccine directed against the causative agent B. burgdorferi, or against the tick vector that transmits this bacterium, will only protect the vaccinated person; thus, in this case, herd immunity does not apply toward protection of the community.”

Stony Brook University researcher Jorge Benach participated in the meetings and noted Lyme vaccines are currently available for dogs but not appropriate for humans.

“There’s clearly a need,” he said. “A lot of things need to be considered before an approval of a vaccine.”

One of those factors: 25 percent of ticks carrying the Lyme bacterium also carry other infectious organisms.

Both researchers said they valued the rare opportunity to commingle, discuss and share expertise about a certain aspect of science under one roof during the Banbury Center’s meetings on Lyme disease.

Dr. Rebecca Leshan, executive director of the Banbury Center at Cold Spring Harbor Lab, is proud that the meetings can impact the wider community.

“I can’t overemphasize the importance of the small meetings convened at the Banbury Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,” she said.

“They provide a truly unique opportunity for experts to engage with counterparts they may never otherwise meet and stimulate new ideas and strategies. And the beautiful Lloyd Harbor setting may provide a bit of extra inspiration for all those who participate.”

The first meetings of the group resulted in improved diagnostics that has already had major effects, with FDA approval of a number of tests.

Outcomes from the most recent meetings, she said, continue to set the right course of action.

Vanderbilt Museum Upgrades to Improve Northport Bay

Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has installed two innovative systems for processing wastewater that significantly reduce the harmful impact of nitrogen pollution in the Northport Bay. The new technology builds on the county’s efforts to address excess nitrogen from wastewater leaching into local waters, which once the epicenter of the region’s red tide.

County Executive Steve Bellone (D) and county Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) announced the installations at an Oct. 30 press event at the museum.

“The science is clear and the solution has been established,” Bellone said.

He noted that it is necessary to replace outdated technologies that do not reduce nitrogen pollution with new technologies that do.

“We have a $6.1 billion tourism economy that is underpinned by water,” Bellone added.

“With strong support from academia, business leaders and the environmental community, our region is no longer kicking the can down the road, but is taking aggressive action to reverse the water quality crisis to better protect our waterways for future generations.”

More than 115,000 people visit the park each year and the upgrade will benefit local waterways by reducing nitrogen discharge at the site by approximately 164 pounds annually.

To date, the county has installed advanced wastewater treatment systems at Lake Ronkonkoma and Meschutt Beach, and is

currently in the process of installing 13 additional systems at other parks.

The major contributor to water quality issues, Spencer said, is nitrogen discharges from more than 360,000 antiquated cesspools in Suffolk.

“I am so pleased to see this technology brought to our county parks, specifically the Vanderbilt Museum, which sits directly beside a water body that we have worked so hard to restore,” Spencer added. He said upgrades to Northport’s sewage treatment plant resulted in a massive reduction in nitrogen discharge, and produced tangible benefits including the absence of red tide and the reopening of a permanently closed Centerport beach.

The investment at Vanderbilt is expected to progress, improve and protect the region’s natural resources, Spencer added.

Officials also announced at the press event that during the month of October alone, more than 100 residents have applied for grants through the county’s septic improvement program, and that next year the county plans to install 1,200 nitrogen-reducing wastewater treatment systems, doubling the amount currently installed.

Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, applauded the progress and collaborative efforts of everyone involved.

“This is what change looks like, one installation at a time,” she said. “Good science, good advocacy and good elected officials give us good policy, and fortunately that’s what we have seen on the water quality

issue in Suffolk County.”

The installation of the new systems is part of the county’s Reclaim Our Water initiative, which seeks to reduce nitrogen pollution of surface and groundwaters.

Demand Skyrockets at Local Food Pantry

Volunteers and Supplies Needed The Community Food Council on East 5th Street in Huntington Station needs help.

Over the last three months, the food pantry has seen a 33 percent increase in demand for groceries.

The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has been feeding the hungry of Huntington Township since 1972 and expects to provide over 40,000 meals this year.

They need more volunteers, to pick up bread from Stop & Shop once a week on Tuesday and to work at the pantry. Typically, volunteers help for about two hours at least one day a month.

If you and your club or organization want to help restock the shelves, the council is in

particular need of chicken soup, peanut butter and jelly, pasta, sauce, toilet paper, etc.

Religious organizations in the area, as well as a couple of food markets and restaurants, provide food or support to the pantry.

The group is a member of Long Island Cares and Island Harvest, which both also provide food to for the hungry. The council is looking for additional support.

The pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to give out food and receive donations.

After numerous residents complained about parking, traffic congestion and safety concerns on neighborhood streets around the Del Vino Vineyards in Northport, officials unanimously voted at an Oct. 16 board meeting to adopt parking restrictions to certain residential streets.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (R), who co-sponsored the resolution, said they recently met with the vineyard’s neighbors to discuss the parking problems in their neighborhood.

“The no-parking signs should be installed by the end of the month and we are hopeful that the signs will be effective in addressing these issues,” Cuthbertson said.

The restrictions prohibit parking around the vineyard on both sides of Norwood Road between Starlit Drive and Russell Court as well as both sides of Starlit Drive 700 feet south of Norwood Road. The no-parking zones, which officially take effect as soon as the signs go up, will be enforced Monday to Friday from 4 to 11 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 11 p.m. Also, parking on Sound Court is prohibited at all times.

Tom Ryan, who has lived on Norwood Road for the past nine years, and has advocated for parking restrictions along with other neighbors, said the approved changes are the lesser of two evils.

“This is something we wanted, but now what do we do about street parking for us,” he said.

Ryan said the new arrangement was the best option to tackle the problem, because the traffic and parking situation on residential streets has gotten completely out of control with numerous tour buses coming and going as they drop off patrons near the vineyard. A steady stream of Uber and Lyft vehicles also clog local streets.

Anthony Guardino, a Hauppauge-based attorney and representative for the vineyard’s owner Frederick Giachetti, did not respond for comment on the approved restrictions by press time. He previously said at a Sept.

17 public hearing that the restrictions were unreasonable, and it would be only fair to adopt a resolution that bans all parking on those streets regardless of the time.

“We’re anxious for the signs, as of now we have resorted to putting up garbage cans, traffic cones and caution tape to deter people from parking on the street,” Ryan said.

The tactic seems to be working, they say.

However, neighbors on Starlit Drive, who are located closer to the vineyard, have had patrons disregard the obstacles and when asked to not to park in front of homes, they’ve countered that it is a public street.

In the aftermath of the approved parking restrictions, residents who live further back from the no-parking zones are worried that the parking problem will shift closer to them.

Ryan expects that the shift will happen.

Residents outside the immediate perimeter of the new restrictions have already reached out to town officials to add additional no-parking zones to avoid pushing the congestion deeper into the neighborhood.

Ryan said this is just one chapter of many other chapters going forward in regard to the vineyard.

He and other neighbors are now concerned about additional capacity problems at the vineyard, since the business was approved to build a second-floor deck by the town planning board in September.

Additionally, the owner has proposed in the past about adding 60-80 additional parking spots at the vineyard, which would increase the lot size from 120 spaces to up to 200.

The vineyard has been a thorn in the side of many residents since it first opened in November 2018. Neighbors have said that the core issue is that Del Vino lacks adequate on-site parking, which caused the problems.

Ryan said it could alleviate some of the parking problems, but it wouldn’t relieve the patron and traffic congestion in the area.

“The owner is someone who just continues to push the envelope,” he said.

Some roads near the vineyard have become so crowded, residents said, that it only can accommodate one-way traffic.

They have also complained that vineyard patrons pass-out on lawns and urinate in public.

Dawn L. Elliott

Dawn Elliott, a resident of Cold Spring Harbor and Kings Park, passed away peacefully Oct. 20. She was 65 years old. Dawn had lived with her mother Miriam Elliott, who passed away this January.

Dawn loved people, especially her family, and doting on her nephews and niece as they grew. The loves of her life beyond her family were: New York Mets (she watched nearly every televised game since 1965 and attended a few. She eagerly awaited each new baseball season with the fervent hope for a winning Mets team. Dawn loved the color purple (her entire room and wardrobe were a tribute

to this hue), stuffed animals, Paul Anka, Elvis Presley, Outback Steakhouse, mashed potatoes with ketchup, coloring books and Disney World.

Other than Elvis, she got to know the rest quite well.

She was a frequent communicator of short, sensational missives to her family and friends of the hurricanes, bankruptcies, layoffs, celebrity headlines and changes of addresses of friends and family. She loved being warm and endured the New York cold and rain with layer upon layer of clothing. She taught her family a great deal about life, about the delight of simple pleasures and the radiance of her joy-filled smile. We are blessed with her memory.

Dawn was predeceased by her loving parents, Jack and Miriam Elliott, and her dear brother-inlaw, Howard Fichtel. She is survived by her sister, Meredith Fichtel, and her brother, Gary Elliott; her sister-in-law Lisa Poe Elliott; her nephew Dr. Ryan Viets; her niece Whitney Viets; her nephews Cooper Elliott and Taylor Elliott; and her grand-nephew Devin Viets.

Memorial services were held at Nolan Funeral Home Oct. 26. The six musicians will participate in three intensive rehearsals, alongside students across Suffolk County, to prepare for their ensembles’ concerts in November. Hannah and Melissa, who were also selected for NYSSMA All-State will travel to Rochester from Dec. 5 to 8 to participate in a weekend of rigorous rehearsals that culminate in a final concert at the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

Harborfields Community Celebrates Homecoming

Community members lined the streets near Harborfields High School on Oct. 26 to catch a glimpse of the homecoming parade as members of the school’s marching band, cheerleaders and kickline team marched down Broadway in Greenlawn.

Following close behind were homecoming queen Aimee Cameron and king August Kollmer, who waved vigorously from the backseat of a convertible as spectators cheered and offered their congratulations.

Bringing up the rear, the school’s freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes walked alongside their handmade floats as they tossed candy to children who scrambled to catch Snickers and Skittles before they hit the sidewalk.

That excitement continued on to the high school as families and staff members crowded the James T. Brennan Memorial Stadium to watch the Harborfields Tornadoes take on the Miller Place Panthers. The Tornadoes scored the first touchdown of the

game in the first quarter but lost to Miller Place, 28-7.

While the game ended in a loss, it far from dampened the community’s spirit. At the halftime show, spectators enjoyed performances from the high school’s cheerleaders, marching band and kickline team. Then, dancers from the freshman, sophomore and junior classes took the field, ending with the seniors showcasing their Harborfields pride with billowing green smoke.

Northport Tigers Take Down Bulls 38-28

With no playoff implications for either team, the Bulls of Smithtown East looked to end their 2019 campaign on a winning note at home against Northport. Despite Smithtown East’s early 14-0 lead, the Tigers rallied in the second half to win 38-28.

Both teams finished their season at 2-6 in Division II. Rafe Carner led the way for Northport as the junior running back tallied 156 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns along with teammate Andrew Argyris who scored three touhdowns covering 126 yards on 16 attempts.

Smithtown East junior running back Tyler Pohlman pounded out 63 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Senior Anthony Weidtman had one touchdown and pulled double duty kicking all four extra points for the Bulls.

Editorial Letters to the Editor What Endorsements Mean CHS Schools Bond Vote Enhances Safety As election season draws to a close, finally, we are among the many breathing a sigh of relief.

We heard that a few people were unhappy with our endorsements. That, of course, should be expected. Some points, though, need to be made clear about our process for endorsing candidates.

Starting in late summer, we start gathering a list of candidates for the upcoming electoral season and arrange candidate debates in TBR News Media offices in Setauket. The process is long and grueling and, despite months of effort, sometimes candidates cannot find a time that works for everyone or, as we saw in several cases this year, some people simply never respond or don’t show up. So, we talk with the candidates that do come to the office and conduct candidate interviews over phone or email with the remainder. The better interview is always done in person as a debate in a roundtable discussion.

The last publication date before election day — which for us is a Thursday — becomes the election edition. In that issue, we exclude letters to the editors that focus on local politics, because there is no way for people to respond publicly before the election. Instead, we include our endorsements on the letters-to-editors pages.

Our election issue contains multitudes of political advertising, but there’s a common misconception that advertising buys our endorsements. The advertising and editorial departments are two distinct entities, and work on two separate floors of our small office space. Advertising is indeed what keeps TBR afloat, but that department has no input on editorial decisions. Of course, there is communication between departments in the newsroom, but that comes down to the placement of ads, and our papers policy avoids placing political ads for candidates on the same page as the candidate profiles that we write.

The endorsements are a product of the interviews, not the other way around. In fact, we are prouder of the debate articles we conduct, which we try to make as balanced as possible between the candidates. We let all sides speak their piece before carefully writing the articles. The debate interviews are conducted throughout October, then written and placed into our annual election issue. These articles range from 500 to more than 1,000 words each for some of the wider-ranging offices.

The endorsements, on the other hand, are barely more than 200 words each. They represent the collective opinion of editors, along with our publisher Leah Dunaief who moderates the debates. We consider long and hard all that we heard, along with our experience with the candidates on the campaign trail.

Sometimes we cannot come to an agreement, or may be on the fence, and meet again the next day to review pros and cons of our choices. The endorsements represent those who we feel might make a better fit for office, but they are also our chance to compliment the person we didn’t endorse or criticize candidates for past performance.

We at TBR News Media congratulate all who stepped up to campaign for public office but, if we were to be honest, endorsements sometimes have little bearing on future performance. In 2016, we endorsed the opponent of Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D) for the office. Toulon won that election, and in 2018 we named him one of our People of the Year. What matters is what an elected official does for the constituents when in office.

Our community is about to make a momentous decision that will impact the future of our school district. I am writing to remind all residents to make it a priority to vote on the bond referendum Tuesday, Nov. 19, 6 a.m. to10 p.m. at the Ralph Whitney Field House at CSH Jr./Sr. High School.

Our children have always been the beneficiaries of a community that values education. The quality education we provide and the success of our students is an ongoing source of pride. We must now decide how we will build on that success to ensure our children continue to receive the highvalue education they deserve and our

community expects.

The scope of work included in the bond represents the combined efforts of the board of education, administration, parents and community residents.

During the past year, we analyzed our academic goals, researched the best options to support those goals and developed a financial plan to achieve those goals with a tax levy neutral impact and no additional cost to taxpayers.

The bond focuses on enhanced safety and security, which is always our highest priority, increased academic opportunities for all students and preserving and improving our schools

to provide an instructional environment that promotes future success.

Before you vote Nov. 19, I hope you will take the time to read the bond voter guide that was mailed to all residents in our community and will visit our district website at www.csh.k12.ny.us for a complete list of bond projects and more information.

We have an opportunity to transform our schools into learning centers that will benefit current and future students for generations to come. Please be part of our school district’s and community’s future and vote on Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Artificial Intelligence in Schools Our educational system is deeply rooted in a model that straddled the agricultural and industrial ages. It was a time when only some kids attended school, and fewer went beyond the eighth grade. Jobs were plentiful and most didn’t require academic skills.

Teachers were primarily single women who taught morals and trained kids to memorize facts. Schools closed between the sowing and harvesting seasons. It worked just fine.

As more families left farms for factories, fathers took on city jobs and could no longer apprentice their sons in manual and agricultural skills. There was a diminishing need to. Compulsory education laws were enacted, and children started attending schools in greater numbers and for longer stints.

After World War II, blacks migrated to Northern cities, as whites fled to the suburbs and passed budgets for sprawling schools. The faculties of college-educated women — and increasing numbers of men — unionized.

The educators were primarily those who succeeded in and liked school as they experienced it, so, they sought to maintain, not revolutionize it. Parents,

too, had expectations based on the model of their own school experience.

Modest adjustments — like new math and whole language — were ridiculed. The school culture was static and resistant to change even as society was undergoing broad upheavals.

Mothers started working, and parenting was outsourced to day care centers. Latchkey kids rode yellow buses to empty houses. Race, poverty, immigration, dysfunction, politics and divorce all entered the schoolhouse.

Knowledge proceeded to double by the decade, as workers saw the lifelong career platform fade into a new employment world of musical chairs … chairs occupied by an increasing number of efficient robots.

The curriculum expanded slightly, but survived largely intact. A classroom would be comfortably familiar to a person who hadn’t entered one in 50 years.

Our world was going digital but our thinking clung to analog. The mixed blessing of technology, and the scourges of drugs and terror entered the schoolhouse.

Even as we employ computers, smartboards and iPads, we clutch onto

much of the yellowing curriculum and methods as if they were the owner’s manual to success.

They’re not.

Studies repeatedly encourage a change in the school day and calendar, but entrenchments and stasis won’t hear of it.

Our template is more past than future.

Global comparisons scare us into action. The committee organized by the Council on Foreign Relations concluded that 30 percent of high school graduates do not do well enough on an aptitude test to serve in the military.

We sense that something is wrong, but, rather than considering an educational revolution, we prescribe a program of evaluating teachers — a bureaucratic alchemy contest in search of educational gold. Regretfully, a reasonable definition of schooling has become the study of things that help one get through school — and not life.

We have spell-check but we need think-check.

As schools vigorously teach to the test, they should be teaching to the future.

Imagining ‘Seinfeld’ Characters Bridging the Modern Political Divide

wonder how the creators of the show “Seinfeld,” Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, would portray today’s world? The answer resides in their approaches to other ideas and conflicts that became the focal point for shows that continue in reruns almost every day.

In one show, Elaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is dating furniture mover Carl (David James Elliott).

In Washington, D.C., and indeed throughout the country, that seems tame compared with the passions

people feel when they share their views about the president and about the upcoming election of 2020.

I could imagine an entire modern “Seinfeld” episode dedicated to the efforts people take to avoid discussing politics. Changing the subject, walking out of the room and pretending they can’t hear each other seems like a way these characters might keep the political genie locked in the bottle, allowing them to enjoy the company of anyone and everyone, even if those people disagree with their views on national politics.

We play out that scenario regularly wherever we go, whether we’re looking to date someone or just chat with someone in a line at the deli, on vacation or at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

We are so concerned that we might offend the other person or that he or she might offend us.

When did we become so incapable of speaking with each other? Are we determined to live in echo chambers, where we only listen and

speak with the people whose ideas, thoughts and words match our own?

Come on, that’s not how democracy is supposed to work. We can and should be capable of hearing from other Americans whose ideas differ from our own. In addition to the land, the flag, the monuments, the Constitution, the history and so many other facets of American life that we share, we owe it to ourselves and to future generations to be able to listen to each other and to remain open to ideas and opportunities.

Are we afraid that someone who seems rational and reasonable might convince us to change our mind? Are our ideas so fragile and our confidence so weak that we can’t have an informed discussion about our views and our ideas?

Surely, we are better than some homogenized party line. We are a land of rugged individualists, who can and should find a way to advance our local, state and national best interests to give everyone an equal opportunity.

It’s not up to the leaders to tell us what

to think, who to be and how to live. We have the chance to make those decisions for ourselves. At their best, those leaders are working to give us a shot at pursuing the American Dream which, last time I checked, doesn’t belong exclusively to one political party or another.

By not talking with each other, we increase the tension that separates the parties and the people who support them. Rather than waiting for a bipartisan detente in Washington, we can and should gather ideas about each other.

If they were still making the show today, the characters from “Seinfeld” might have helped us laugh about how entrenched we have become in dealing with our differences. We, however, aren’t living in a TV show and we owe it to ourselves to gather real information, to listen to other people and to bridge the divide that’s causing the fabric to fray of a country we all call home.

We can learn and grow from making decisions for ourselves, instead of following the same script with every conversation.

Come Aboard With Me to the Adriatic Sea

ll vacations are wonderful in their own way. A chance to get a break from the daily routine, to rest, perhaps to view new scenery, meet new people, learn new things, even just to get a break from the news — these are hoped-for results. We’ve just returned from a trip abroad and, as I have done in past columns, I would like to share some of what we saw and did.

We boarded one of the largest sailing vessels in the world in Venice, Italy, after an eight-hour plane ride from JFK International Airport.

I won’t go into raptures about Venice Between because it would you and me take up the rest of

will just say that there were probably more visitors in Venice than there are on any given day in Walt Disney World. Large ships are not allowed inside the harbor, so our small group was ferried to the Wind Surf by small motorboats lined up waiting for passengers along the Grand Canal.

Let the adventure begin.

We departed at 6 p.m. and set sail to cross the Adriatic Sea, an extension of the Mediterranean, to land on the Dalmatian Coast the next morning.

The first city, in the north of Croatia, was Rovinj, pronounced roveen. Croatia is a country often described as being at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe and one that is exquisitely picturesque with seaside cities and steep limestone mountains. As you might guess, for being in the center of human history, the country has had many invasions, rulers and iterations of government. Now a republic, it has been a duchy, a kingdom, in a union with Hungary, part of the Habsburg Monarchy, part of Austria-Hungary, part of Italy, then remade after World War I into Yugoslavia until that country finally fell apart into six independent smaller countries after the 1980 death of the autocrat, Josip Tito.

The countries surrounding Croatia geographically are Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Croatia joined the European Union in 2013. All of that abbreviated history took place over only the past 14 centuries. The area actually has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

Rovinj is a fishing port on the Istrian peninsula. Surrounded by blue-green, startling clean Adriatic water, its pastel houses crowded down to the seafront, the small city offers a tangle of pale yellow cobblestone streets, lots of inviting bistros and a beautiful Baroque hilltop church, St. Euphemia, whose tower is the highest in Istria at about 61 meters and can be climbed — not by me — for a magnificent view.

The Adriatic is only 120 miles at its widest point, separating what was known as the Balkans from Italy. The coastal towns were often under attack and thus encouraged to build fortified walls along the beachfronts.

We walked the pebbled beach of Rovinj, bargained in the marketplace for native olive oil and truffles, and bought a couple of scarves made in Italy at cheaper than Italian prices. In

fact, Croatia is known as a less expensive tourist destination, where a room in a fine hotel for the night during high season may be had for 50 euros (about $55). So far mainly Germans seem to have discovered this bargain, and they visit Rovinj in large numbers.

The eastern shore of the Adriatic is often referred to as the Dalmatian Coast and the name stems from an Illyrian tribe called the Dalmatae, (from their word “delme,” meaning sheep) who lived there during classic antiquity. Dalmatia is even referenced in the New Testament. And, yes, the hardy Dalmatian dogs come from there, whose unique black and white markings make them easily spotted on fire trucks. Dalmatia is one of the four historical regions of Croatia and for a long time was ruled by the Republic of Venice from 1420 until Napoleon of France appeared on the scene in 1797.

One of the frustrations of traveling along the coast by ship is that time spent in any port city is of necessity limited by the schedule of the cruise. After a delicious fish lunch in a sidewalk café, we returned to the ship, with its white sails billowing dramatically in the breeze, then went on to the larger city of Split. More next time.
