Town Elwood’s $38M bond goes before voters Nov. 28

By Sara-Megan WalSh sara@tbrnewspapers.com Elwood school district officials will put a total of $38 million in capital bond projects before residents for approval this November.

Elwood’s board of education voted unanimously Sept. 28 to put forth two propositions for a vote next month. Proposition 1 includes $34.5 million for health and safety improvements across the district. A $3.65 million Proposition 2 would go toward enhancement of the athletic fields.

“Over the course of the next two months, I look forward to as much community participation as possible,” Superintendent Kenneth Bossert said. “We want to provide as much information as possible to residents so that they can make an informed decision at the polls on Nov. 28.”

The first proposition focuses on major projects in each of the four school buildings — Harley Avenue Elementary, Boyd Intermediate School, Elwood Middle School and John H. Glenn High School — including replacing the roofs to fix existing leaks and flooding issues, fixing sidewalk and pavement cracks, renovating cafeterias and auditoriums and including air conditioning in some spaces.

The second, if passed, would allow for enhancements to the district’s athletic facilities including a concession stand for the high school fields with an outdoor bathroom, a synthetic turf field, sidewalks to make the

elwood Middle School would get a new roof if Proposition 1 for $34.5 million is approved by school district residents in november. fields compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a new press box and a scoreboard for the varsity baseball field.

The major issue of debate at the Sept. 28 board meeting came down to prioritizing items on the district’s list of alternative projects. The list is a compilation of recommended building renovations and upgrades that may be possible to complete if Proposition 1 is approved by voters, and there are additional funds remaining after the outlined construction is completed.

“The alternative list are all projects that were removed from Proposition 1 in order to bring it down to a level where taxpayers could be comfortable with [the tax increase],” Bossert said.

vey had recommended approximately $60 million in needed construction and safety upgrades to the buildings.

Some of the alternative projects the district will put forth to the state which aren’t included in either proposition include a new districtwide satellite clock system for $105,000; a backup generator for the computer systems at $125,000; air conditioning for office areas at $710,000; replacement of heating and ventilation units for $110,000; wall paneling at $170,000; locker room renovations for $625,000 and landscaping a playground for $40,000.

“I would like to see some things that the students will be impacted by moved up to the top of the list,” trustee Heather Mammolito said. “In an ideal world, I’d like to see locker

room renovations bumped up and some others, like wall panelling, lower on the list.”

Mammolito’s comments were echoed and supported by other members of the board, who reached an agreement to re-evaluate it before posting it for district residents.

The superintendent stressed that the alternative projects list is highly flexible and “not set in stone”, as the renovations would only be possible if there are surplus funds and, which ones move forward would be dependent on how much of the bond is left.

“Often as is the case with construction, there are unanticipated costs,” Bossert said.

“We may have to add projects to our list.”

The alternative projects list must be compiled as it has to be approved by voters and sent to the state, according to Bossert, so that if there are funds leftover after major projects are completed the district would have authorization to do work on these projects.

School officials have plans to host walkthrough tours at each of the school buildings prior to the November vote so residents can evaluate first-hand the proposed projects.

The dates have yet to be announced.

The Nov. 28 vote will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m at the district’s administrative offices. This a change from the district’s traditional 2 to 10 p.m. polling hours, approved by the school board, in order to offer more hours for working taxpayers to vote and more aligned with general election polling hours.

Huntington officials say Columbus statue not going anywhere Town of Huntington officials want to ensure that Italian-Americans can celebrate their culture with pride this Columbus Day weekend.

Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) made a vow to protect the Christopher Columbus statue overlooking Huntington Village against a growing movement to remove what have been referred to as controversial historical monuments.

“The Town of Huntington took on the crusade of putting the statue here,” Petrone said. “We are not removing the statue. The town board feels very strongly about this; we are not removing it.”

Huntington’s Columbus statue has stood at the corner of Main Street and Lawrence Hill Road for more than 40 years, according to Petrone. It was commissioned by Sam Albicocco, a Huntington resident of Italian-American heritage, and its costs were financed by contributions from local residents.

The supervisor said he felt it was necessary to make a public statement in wake of a growing movement at the national and state levels to remove public monuments to controversial historical figures, such as Confederate war leaders and Christopher Columbus.

Shortly after the committee was announced, The New York Times reported the Christopher Columbus statue in Central Park was defaced with its hands stained by red paint and graffiti, which included the words “Hate will not be tolerated” on the pedestal.

“This is a political frenzy that’s been unleashed on the Italian community,” said Robert Ferrito, state president of the Sons of Italy. “It’s a frenzy of political correctness and a rewriting of history.”

Ferrito said his Italian-American fraternal organization is working with other organizations throughout the state to ensure that all monuments to Christopher Columbus are protected and the holiday remains unchanged.

U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) recalled how his own father, an immigrant, was one of many Italian-Americans who

faced strong discrimination during World War II and the years that followed and spoke of how it relates to the proposition of tearing down the statue.

“I was proud as a young boy to be an Italian-American,” Suozzi said. “We are going to make sure people realize Christopher Columbus gave so much to our country, just like Italian-Americans gave so much to our country, and we are not backing down.”

The announcement by Town officials comes on the eve of the annual Long Island Fall Festival in Heckscher Park, which is traditionally kicked off each year with a wreath laying at the Columbus statue.

“As anyone who has viewed the parade knows, it is not only about one man, Christopher Columbus,” Petrone said. “It is about the millions of Long Islanders of Italian extraction who take pride in their heritage and their contributions to our town, our Island, our state and our country. Here in the Town of Huntington — a town that values diversity and inclusiveness, and, above all, history — we have no plans to cancel the parade. And we certainly have no plans to even consider taking down this statue.”

The wreath laying will be held Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. The town’s annual Columbus Day parade will be held on Oct. 8 starting at 12:30 p.m. and travel along the length of Main Street.

Petrone said that the town had not received any written objections to the parade or ceremony as of Oct. 1.

Northport parents call for in-depth K-wing study

At the Sept. 28 meeting, Dr. Lauren Zajac of Mount Sinai Hospital, a pediatrician specially trained in environmental health, fielded questions by the board and residents and encouraged the district to implement an indoor air quality program in all its schools.

“As a pediatrician and a mom myself, I would want to make sure our schools have good air because nobody is doing that right now — let’s become a leader in the state when it comes to indoor air quality,” Zajac said over a Skype call in the cafeteria at William J. Brosnan School.

She assured the agitated residents in the room that moving forward is the best plan of action.

Tripping on drugs

A 19-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man from Farmingdale were carrying marijuana on Reservoir Road in Huntington at around 10:15 p.m. Sept. 27, police said. They were both arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Drug busts

Police said a 19-year-old man from Huntington Station was found to be carrying marijuana while on the corner of Lockwood Avenue and 8th Avenue in Huntington Station at around 12:15 p.m. Sept. 29. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

In desperate need of a slice

At around 9 p.m. Sept. 29, on Main Street in Huntington, a 48-year-old man from Long Island City kicked and broke the front glass door of Gino’s Pizzeria, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief.

Hit a Honda and run

After hitting a 2005 Honda Odyssey with his 2006 Ford on I-495 in Commack at around 6:45 a.m. Sept. 25, a 57-year-old man from Lake Ronkonkoma fled before exchanging insurance information, police said. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Swerving

While driving a 2015 Infiniti north on Route 110 in Huntington Sept. 28 at around 12:45 a.m., a 46-year-old woman from Langley, Virginia, swerved in and out of lanes, police said. She was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

No license to drive

A 44-year-old man from Copiague was driving a 2002 Ford with a suspended license down Sweet Hollow Road in Melville at around 11:50 a.m. Sept. 28, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Jaguar on the go

An unknown person stole a 2016 Jaguar XJ from the driveway of a home on Winthrop Drive in Dix Hills at around 7 p.m. Sept. 28, police said.

Cash from the car

Cash was stolen out of a 2011 Toyota parked in front of a home on Stony Run Court in Dix Hills at around 4:45 a.m. Sept. 29, according to police.

Sudden turn

At around 1:45 a.m. Sept. 27, a 27-year-old man from Huntington Station was driving a 2005 Nissan on the corner of New York Avenue and Pulaski Road and failed to signal while turning, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

Police said lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, was found in the possession of a 20-year-old man from East Northport Sept.

27 at around 1:30 p.m. on Carll Place in East Northport. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

On Sept. 27, at around 8 p.m., a 33-year-old man was found with methamphetamine and marijuana at Park and Ride on North Service Road in Melville, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

At a CVS on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station Sept. 26 at around 2:20 p.m., a 30-year-old woman from Westbury stole assorted pharmaceutical items while carrying crack-cocaine, according to police. She was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

While in a Huntington shopping center on Walt Whitman Road, a 37-year-old woman from Deer Park tried to cash a check that wasn’t hers at around 9:30 a.m. Sept. 26, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Big & Tall and Red & Bull

While at Edward Alan Big & Tall on Jericho Turnpike in Commack, a 46-year-old man from Brooklyn stole up to $1,000 worth of assorted clothing at around 2 p.m. Sept. 24, according to police. Later in the day, at around 5:30 p.m., police said he stole a Red Bull and a bottle of water from 7-Eleven on Jericho Turnpike. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and petit larceny.

Marijuana in Melville

On Sept. 24, at around 9 p.m., a 24-year-old man from Melville was found to be burning marijuana in public view on Speonk Court in Melville, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Fashionable felon

At around 12 p.m. Sept. 24, an unknown person stole three designer bags, a ring and a designer scarf from inside a home on John Daves Lane in Huntington, police said.

Gearing up for the game

According to police, at a Target on East Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington, two unknown people stole football team hooded sweatshirts at around 8 p.m. Sept. 29.

Tire slash

Four tires were slashed on a 2012 Mercedes Benz at around 3:20 a.m. Sept. 28 on East 8th Street in South Huntington, police said.

Driver killed in blazing crash into restaurant

An out-of-control driver was killed Oct. 1 after crashing into a Spanish restaurant in Smithtown this past weekend.

Suffolk County Police said a man was driving a 2004 Nissan Quest eastbound on West Jericho Turnpike near Cornell Drive when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a 2011 Ford pickup truck, then plowed into Casa Luis. The vehicle flipped and caught fire just after midnight.

Commack Fire Department responded to both a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident and an automatic fire alarm coming from Casa Luis at 12:35 a.m., department spokesman Steve Silverman said. Upon arriving, firefighters found an overturned minivan engulfed in flames. The fire extended into the restaurant, which had an active natural gas leak, according to Silverman.

It took approximately one hour for 75 volunteer firefighters using eight trucks to bring the flames under control. Dix Hills, East Northport, Greenlawn, Kings Park and Smithtown fire departments with Commack Ambulance Corps and Suffolk Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services coordinators also assisted at the fire.

Police said the man, who was alone in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identification will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, according to police.

The owner of Casa Luis and his wife, who live in an apartment above the restaurant, were able to escape unharmed, according to Silverman. They could not be reached for comment.

Suffolk County Police are investigating the accident. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the 4th Squad at 631-854-8452.

Huntington mobilizes to help donate to Puerto Rico Huntington town officials have set up two partnerships to make it easier for local residents to send donations and supplies to Puerto Rico.

Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) announced Oct. 3. that the town will be working in collaboration with both the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Maria relief effort and Long Island Hispanic Business Roundtable, Inc. in Oyster Bay in an effort to get much-needed funds and specific supplies to the victims.

“We are a giving community,” Edwards said. “We have always responded, and I am absolutely confident that the people in our community will respond to support people who critically need these supplies to survive.

We are asking all Town of Huntington residents, both businesses and our community members, to help.”

Edwards said the town will accept donations of specific, needed supplies at the Huntington Opportunity Resource Center, at 1264 New York Avenue in Huntington

Station. Requested donations include water, batteries, flashlights, portable lanters, diapers, baby wipes and feminine products.

Supplies can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, or after hours donations can be made by scheduling an appointment with Edwards’ office at 631-351-3175.

Edwin Perez, of Long Island Hispanic Business Roundtable, is also helping the town with working out the specifics of transporting all donations. Perez reached out to Liberty Moving and Storage in Commack, who has agreed to pick up items collected at the resource center and deliver them to a central facilty in Hauppauge, overseen by the New York National Guard as part of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) New York Stands with Puerto Rico initiative.

“People have reached out and asked if I was going to do anything for my American homeland,” Perez said. “I was able to reach out to my network and say, ‘Huntington is standing with Puerto Rico.’”

The Red Cross is reporting that there are nearly 400 volunters in Puerto Rico who are helping to reconnect families and distribute relief supplies, including food and water.

International Red Cross workers are also restoring electrical connections and installing satellites to help Puerto Ricans get in touch with family members and access vital information.

“There people really need a lot of things,” said Rosa Moya, representing Latinos Unidos de Huntington. “People are panicked. They are getting frustrated. If we can do something

In coordination with government and nonprofit parnters, the Red Cross is helping to distribute water, ready-to-eat meals, fresh fruit and vegetables, tarps and comfort kits.

Emergency distribution of water has been provided to several vulernable communities which were running out of water. The Red Cross has already mobilized more than 250 tractor-trailer loads of relief supplies to help aid Puerto Rico. Red Cross teams are also assessing what the community needs, and

providing health and mental health services.

To make a monetary donation to the Red Cross, residents can visit the town’s website, www.huntingtonny.gov, and click on the red heart at the top of the home page. The link will lead to a microsite on the Red Cross web page, where by following the prompts residents can choose from a drop-down menu how they want their donations to be used. The default setting will send money to Hurricane Maria victims, but money can also be marked for victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Owl Hill Estate hits market for first time in 60 years

By Kevin redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Standing for decades as the hamlet’s bestkept secret, an old, secluded manor nestled within a sprawling stretch of property in Fort Salonga has come out of hiding — with a price tag of $6.45 million.

The Owl Hill estate, located at 99 Sunken Meadow Road, spans 27.63 acres and is the largest parcel of 1-acre residential-zoned land in Suffolk County. It is up for sale for the first time in more than six decades. It’s now the most expensive property in Fort Salonga.

The 6,500-square-foot home, whose construction began in 1897 and doors opened in 1903, sits surrounded by a serene haven of wooded forest and towering oak trees. The house has been occupied, and maintained, by the same Manhattan-based family for more than half a century as a summer and weekend residence. Maya Ryan, the current owner, who was unable to be reached for comment, recently decided it was time to pass the property onto another family or developer — according to Owl Hill’s listing agent Kelley Taylor, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Taylor said she’s lived around the corner from the property for more than 20 years and never heard of it until recently.

“That’s where the ‘hidden’ comes from in hidden gem,” Taylor said, calling the Owl Hills house one of a kind. “It’s pretty remarkable — like nothing you’d expect to see in

Suffolk County or on Long Island. It’s never been developed on.”

The palatial estate, which the listing agent compared to Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill home in Oyster Bay, is only 50 miles from New York City and contains more than 20 acres of completely untouched land. There hasn’t been a single renovation

to the property since the 1940s when its occupants expanded the kitchen.

The interior of the home speaks to the architectural elegance of a bygone era with original tiger oak and mahogany hardwood floors.

There are five en suite master bedrooms and three staff bedrooms, with a soaring fireplace in each, as well as an expansive music/liv-

ing room, a wood-paneled dining room and a massive basement. Outside, there’s a wraparound porch and a two-car garage, all within what Taylor calls a magical forest.

As for potential buyers, she said she’s seen a majority of interest from developers, including one evaluating the property as the site of a 55 and better community. But, she said, the owner has preserved 3.75 acres of the property under New York State’s Transfer of Development Rights.

“A big family would certainly love the generousness of the estate, as would anyone who appreciates the particular beauties of wellmade historic homes,” Dawn Watson, public relations manager at Douglas Elliman Real Estate, said. “It’s quite extraordinary and the parklike property is expansive and lush.”

In March, the Town of Smithtown and the county raised a $1 million grant to be used to preserve a portion of the Owl Hill property for open space.

Smithtown scholar Corey Victoria Geske said although the property has been around so long, there still isn’t a lot of information in regards to its historical details.

“Owl Hill is another example of beautiful architecture in Smithtown for which the architect, to my knowledge, is as yet unknown,” Geske said. “This is the kind of house that deserves that kind of research attention because it’s so special with regards to interior detail and its location, built high on the hills of Fort Salonga.”

’Uke’ can do it

Students at Pulaski Road Elementary School in the NorthportEast Northport School District recently had the opportunity to play the ukulele — many for the first time. Music teacher Cristen Salisbury kicked off the lesson by showing students in David Kaiser’s fifth-grade class the basics of holding the instrument, how to strum the ukulele and the correct amount of pressure to apply to the strings.

Several years ago, the district purchased six classroom sets of ukuleles as a result of their high demand in the Summer Music Program. Teachers discovered that in a short amount of time, students were able to learn five to six

chords, which comprise 50 percent of the American Songbook of folk and popular music.

“Learning these chords helps students to unlock some of the mysteries of music composition by empowering them to write their own music,” said Izzet Mergen, director of fine and performing arts.

After learning the basics from Salisbury, students practiced strumming the strings as if flicking water off of their hands and forming different chords to create beautiful tunes by the end of class.

“It’s such a great opportunity to get kids interested in playing an instrument, especially if they’ve never played one before,” Salisbury said.

Town Cause Cafe reopens in Northport with Caribbean twist

Stacey Wohl, former owner of Our Table, reopened her dining room on Fort Salonga Road Sept. 29 to bring back Cause Cafe. She hopes to pair her passion for fine food and wine with a supportive hands-on daytimework environment for young adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities.

“I’m melding together both restaurants,” she said. “It will be an upscale eclectic Caribbean- and Mexican-inspired restaurant with food I like, but also supporting the cause.”

Wohl first opened Cause Cafe in Spring 2016 as a small coffee shop offering breakfast foods, sandwiches and more. Inspired by her two children, Brittany and Logan who both have autism, she offered employment and hands-on job training to young adults with disabilities. Unfortunately, its doors closed in February 2017.

The small cafe was quickly transformed into Our Table, which focused on the trend of farm-to-table dining featuring local ingredients. But the upscale restaurant wasn’t a good match for the area, according to Wohl, who said she gained much from the experience.

“I learned that sometimes people just want comfort food,” she said. “I also wanted

Police Huntington Station rapist sentenced for 2013 murder

A Huntington Station man has been convicted in the 2013 murder of a young woman, a crime that shocked the community.

Fernando Romualdo, 29, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Sept. 27 for the second-degree murder of 23-year-old Sarah Strobel, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Strobel was found slain in Froehlich Farm Nature Preserve nearly four years ago. On Oct. 3, 2013, a hiker walking along a path in the Huntington park, near West Rogues Path, noticed the body of an adult female off to the side and called 911, according to police.

Authorities later identified Strobel and quickly ruled that her death was criminal in nature.

A friend of Strobel’s, Taylor Friedman, said the walking path was a favorite hiking spot of the victim. Friedman helped organize a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the young woman, a 2008 Walt Whitman High School graduate.

“Sarah was a free spirit and a wise soul,” Friedman said at the vigil. “She lived her life to the fullest and made the best of any situation whether it was bad or good.”

together to remember several youths who had been killed in recent years. They dedicated trees and a memorial stone to the victims at the former Depot Road Park, recently renamed Richard W. Holst Memorial Park.

In 2016, Suffolk County police announced the arrest of Romualdo after investigators learned his DNA matched evidence that was collected from Strobel’s body. Romualdo had been serving a three-year sentence at Mohawk Correctional Facility in upstate Rome for rape of a female teenager.

It was a one-sided affair for Northport (10-1, 8-0). Jack Wetzel, who scored 14 points coming into the matchup, added three points to his his total with two goals and an assist, moving him into the Top 10 list of Suffolk County scorers.

Wetzel assisted on Konstantine Mendrinos’ first goal of the game in the 25th minute.

“I saw Jack get the ball down the sideline and I knew he was going to drive it into space with his pace, and I ran into the middle and I saw the gap open,” Mendrinos said. “I was there to put it home.”

Northport piled it in the next few minutes, as Wetzel scored both his goals between the 32- and 25-minute marks to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

“Chris [Fertig] won a very good 50-50 ball for me and I could have dribbled up and got a better opportunity,” Wetzel said on his first goal, adding that his teammates gave him plenty of opportunities throughout the game. “I was able to make good contact on the ball.”

Connetquot struggled to possess the ball all game, and had one shot on goal in the first half compared to Northport’s 19.

“We played them better than we did the first time,” Connetquot head coach Nick Sturtz said. “We came in with three or four starters short, so it was kind of scrappy play all day.”

Northport scored its fourth goal late in the game off the foot of James Diaz to make the score 4-0.

Wetzel said he hopes the Tigers can keep their streak going.

“We’re very excited and very happy about the position we’re in right now, but we are still taking it one game at a time,” Wetzel said. “We are not trying to think about going undefeated right now. We are thinking about beating Lindenhurst. They are very good and we are away, so we are just trying to care of business.”

Northport faces Lindenhurst (7-4, 4-4) Oct. 5. At 4:30 p.m. Northport won the first battle between the teams back on Sep. 12 with a 2-0 win.

Strasser said he likes the way his team is playing this season, but also knows the upcoming games will be a challenge for Northport.

“We don’t want our forecast too far ahead,” Strasser said. “We still got to to try to win the league title, and now our focus is on Lindenhurst. It won’t be easy, so we just have to continue to work hard.”

Halfway through the first overtime period, Huntington’s Nicole Abbondandelo fed Stafford the ball, who put a shot from 15 yards out past one of the Island’s top goalies in senior Alexis Saladino. It put the Blue Devils out front this time for good. The team’s defense then kept the Wolverines in check over the final 15 minutes to close out the victory.

“I think the team stayed composed throughout the whole game and we worked really hard and played as a team to get the win,” Seccafico said. “We hope to win the last couple of games left in the season to guarantee us a spot in playoffs.”

Huntington knew what was on the line. With the end of the regular season in sight, the Blue Devils need to win as many games as possible to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.

“Going into today’s game we knew that it was going to be tough, but that we could handle Newfield,” senior Emma Greenhill said. “We’ve come so far in this season since first losing 3-0 to them and we needed to better represent ourselves — especially going into overtime — we needed a win. This is definitely going to propel us and give us the confidence boost we need for the rest of the season. Katie and Marissa really came through for us in this game.”

The Blue Devils have pulled together in an all-out drive to win games. The season hasn’t gone entirely as planned, but there have been some highlights, including the play of freshman goalkeeper Ainsley

Lumpe, who stopped 10 shots by Newfield.

Huntington has experience in overtime games, and against the Wolverines the team was determined to come away with the win.

“We’ve been in this situation multiple times before and knew in order to win we had to go as hard as we could,” Abbondandelo said. “Marissa Stafford created an opportunity for herself that paid off in the end. For the rest of the season we need to keep the momentum that we’ve gained from the past few games and practices. All the girls are ambitious to capture a spot in playoffs and will continue trusting their teammates on the field.”

Stafford is widely regarded as one of the best underclassmen in the county. The student-athlete has the skills needed, and said the drive she and her teammates have and the hunger to make playoffs put her team a notch above the competition.

“We worked really hard today and wanted it more than the other team, which resulted in a deserved win,” Stafford said. “For the rest of the season the team needs to continue to play aggressive and keep shooting and hopefully we will make it into the playoffs.”

Huntington head coach John Walsh and assistant coach Vincent Tannazzo gave their players everything they had, encouraging them every step of the way.

“It was a matter of time until we finally won,” senior Catie Ricciardelli said. “We all never gave up and we deserved it today.

Harborfields Central School District

Swimmers support cancer research In August, Harborfields Central School District’s girls varsity swim team participated in an annual fundraiser to help raise money and awareness for cancer research through the Swim Across America organization — this year joined by Smithtown Central School District’s varsity girls team.

Together, more than 40 swimmers raised $4,000 for the cause, and both teams made a commitment to do the event next year.

Swimmers were thanked and congratulated by Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer (DCenterport) for their hard work and efforts.

“Your commitment and sup-

port will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer,” he said.

In addition to the event itself, a scientist from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory visited and spoke with the participating swimmers to explain the importance of continuous support and research for cancer.

Political harmony in dark times This just in: Republicans and Democrats are having a hard time getting along. Having a thorough understanding of that fact, a story that emerged from a Suffolk County Legislature meeting Oct. 3 caught our attention.

According to a spokeswoman from her office, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), the 5th district representative who we have covered since she took office in 2011, became ill during the meeting and was taken to the hospital. As of Oct. 4, the spokeswoman said she was feeling much better, and the trip to the hospital was taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Two days before, Hahn ran in the Soles for All Souls 5K Race and completed the run in 26 minutes, 17 seconds.

In any event, we wish her a speedy recovery and hope all is well going forward, and we are not alone in that sentiment.

Each year prior to local elections, TBR News Media hosts political candidates for debates to allow them ample time to lay out their platforms and constructively discuss important local issues. Democrats and Republicans sit down and discuss the most important aspects of everyday life for our neighbors. At the end of the discussion, our editorial board reaches a consensus on which candidate we would like to endorse. The issue comes out the Thursday before Election Day each year. This year will be no different.

Hahn and her opponent, Republican Edward Flood, are currently scheduled to make an appearance this Friday, Oct. 6. On the morning of Oct. 4, Flood called our main office, having also heard of what took place at the Legislature meeting, and offered to reschedule the debate should Hahn need more time to recover.

We have not decided whom we will endorse in this race — Hahn is an exemplary advocate for our community who has served as the majority leader in the Legislature and has headed up several committees — but we would like to take this opportunity to commend Flood for reaching across party lines to put a fellow human’s wellbeing above politics.

To our local politicians, keep up the good, bipartisan work, and continue to remain above the divisive political fray.

Children’s health care is a basic necessity As a pediatric ear nose and throat doctor (ENT) for nearly 20 years, I have seen children from all walks of life come into my office with challenges and walk out with their health restored. As a doctor, father and legislator in the 18th Legislative District, I firmly believe that every child should have access to quality health care.

I am pleased that the GrahamCassidy Bill lacked the votes it required for passage because of the detrimental implications it would have had for millions across this nation who would lose needed health care coverage. What continues to concern me is that no decision has been made on the

future of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which impacts our most vulnerable young people who don’t qualify for Medicaid, but who are low income and need the coverage.

CHIP covers several million children in this country and 300,000 of them are New York’s precious young ones. We may be a divided nation on many issues, but I am sure we are united in our belief that health care access for children should not be jeopardized. I call on our Congressional delegation to protect CHIP. The health and safety of our children should be a nonpartisan issue, one that we can all support and defend.

If we are serious about tackling the social challenges we face, then we must begin by recognizing that investing in a child’s basic need is the first and most critical step. I will continue to craft legislation and policy in my role as a legislator that puts children first. I call on our national elected counterparts to do the same.

Watch your language President Trump Publicly excoriating on television certain NFL players who visually expressed strong dissatisfaction with the discriminatory nature of our society, Donald Trump shockingly called them “sons of b…..s.” I do not recall any other president who used such language publicly. What sort of example is Trump making for the younger people of our nation?

What effect can the use of such vulgarity have on them, who are instructed by their parents, other family members, teachers, clergy, neighbors, etc., not to express themselves with vulgar language?

Does Trump not understand that since he is president (alas!), many people — especially schoolchildren — will automatically regard him as a role model and may repeat the words and actions that he rashly employs? If a schoolteacher were to use words like “sons of b…..s” publicly, demands

would surely and understandably be made for his or her removal from the classroom.

I do not recall hearing any president in my lifetime, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt onward, publicly employing such vulgar terminology. At another level, Trump’s verbal missiles aimed at Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s appalling leader, again demonstrates Trump’s lack of understanding of the possible consequences of the use of undiplomatic speech. While almost all of us are justifiably angered and deeply concerned by the repellent behavior of Kim Jong-un, surely we recognize that Donald Trump should not antagonize him publicly or privately with crude or mocking remarks. Doing so can only increase Kim Jong-un’s maniacal belligerence.

People occupying various official positions everywhere in

our country and elsewhere must watch their words, a necessary requirement for those whose positions automatically make them models for imitation, especially the young. President Obama, incidentally, struck me as an outstanding example of controlled speech, despite his having been frequently and publicly goaded by public figures with vile words.

I would like to emphatically say to Donald Trump, our rather thoughtless and frighteningly impetuous president, that when addressing the leaders of antagonistic nations, he must remind himself to heed the famed and sound advice of President Theodore Roosevelt: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” And when he speaks about our fellow American citizens, he must learn to do so with respect and with courtesy.

If it weren’t for you, we might be living with even more unimaginable tragedies.

For reasons most of us, fortunately, can only imagine at a distance, people are tormented by destructive urges.

When these moments arise, hopefully, a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor or someone in a position to recognize the signs can step in and offer support, while redirecting that person toward a

to school, we clap at the end of their concerts and we feed them their meals before sending them to bed for the night.

When I was in junior high school, I read books such as “Lord of the Flies” and “The Crucible,” which my teacher Mrs. Wickle suggested were an important way to look at the “dark side” of the heart.

At the time, I found the subjects depressing and unnecessary. Why, I thought, did I have to read about such violence or mass hysteria.

In the modern world, we are in the crosshairs of everything from overseas terrorists to storms and earthquakes and, yes, to people without an apparent ideology whose final act before they take their own lives is to commit mass murder.

We look at the faces of the victims and feel the loss of those we never met.

They look like our friends and neighbors, and we know their smiles, once filled with potential, will never again light up a room.

At the same time, hundreds of people lined up for hours to do what they could — give blood — to help save those in immediate need.

Clearly, a few people in our midst have headed toward the dark side of their hearts and minds, allowing the demons that plague their lives to release the unthinkable and unimaginable.

Maybe, in addition to the discussion about gun control, we ought to appreciate the legion of mental health professionals who dedicate themselves to helping those battling against destructive urges, whose thoughts wander into the wilderness of despair.

The toll their work often takes on some of these mental health helpers is enormous, as other people’s nightmares leap from the minds of their patients into their own subconscious. The flow of information travels both ways, putting psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers at risk.

These mental health workers often talk to others in their field to help them get through the difficulties of their jobs.

They listen, they encourage, they become involved and, ultimately, they can and so often do set people on better courses in their lives, helping them feel better and live better.

By the time you read this, perhaps we’ll have an idea of what triggered the madness from this latest gunman, and maybe it will have less to do with offthe-rails thinking than with an ideology that encourages mass violence.

If it wasn’t lone-wolf insanity, but, rather, someone following instructions, we ought to find the ones who encouraged these senseless and brutal murders.

Either way, we ought to dedicate more resources to battling with the burden of a broken brain. If, somehow, a mental health professional can redirect someone who might otherwise commit incomprehensible violence, that person not only has saved a life but may have turned a would-be murderer into another conscientious citizen lining up for hours to give blood instead of planning to spill it.

Music can soothe the soul in troubled times

n the last few weeks we have been subjected to a constant bombardment of tragic news. The horrific mass killings in Las Vegas is just the latest. We have lived through reports of the sequential hurricanes that have killed, maimed and destroyed lives and property in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. We have agonized for the men, women and children caught in the Mexican earthquakes.

We ran away from news of the carnage the other night and took refuge in art. The glorious embrace of Giacomo Puccini and his soaring arias of “La Bohème,” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, welcomed us.

Puccini, you may well know, is considered one of the two most famous Italian opera composers of the 19th century, the other being Giuseppe Verdi. What I didn’t know is that he was the offspring of a musical dynasty in Lucca that included his father and the fathers preceding them as far back as his great-great-grandfather. All of these ancestors studied music at Bologna, wrote music for the church and, aided by their genes and family connections, were distinguished in their time.

Puccini’s first opera, “Le Villi,” premiering in 1884, when he was 26, was well enough received, and his subsequent “Manon Lescaut” was a triumph.

His personal life, however, was as riveting as his librettos. He eloped with his married, former piano student at the risk of being shunned. They did eventually marry, after another husband killed her womanizing husband. By

coincidence, Puccini’s opera premiered the same week as Verdi’s last opera, “Falstaff,” and talk began of Puccini being the natural heir to Verdi. At least that was what George Bernard Shaw is reported to have said.

Puccini’s next three operas are among the most popular and most often produced: “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly.”

When “La Bohème” premiered in Turin in 1896, Arturo Toscanini conducted it, and it was immediately popular. The story is of four young artists, all starving and freezing as they work in a garret in Paris and experience the pleasures and pains of young love. The opera is at turns joyful with the energy of youth and tragic with the premature death from tuberculosis of Mimi, the seamstress, and Rodolfo’s love. As a young man in Milan, Puccini lived the life he wrote about, once sharing a single herring with three others, as portrayed in the opera.

Puccini almost died in a car accident before finishing “Madama Butterfly” but then went on to complete what is now one of the most loved operas in the world. “Tosca” followed; then

“La Fanciulla del West,” a plot set in America; “La Rondine;” and a threeact opera, including “Gianni Schicchi,” which contains my favorite aria, “O mio babbino caro.” “Turandot” was his final opera, finished after his death by his associates from his sketches, and offering the memorable, “Nessun dorma.”

Publicity about his personal life continued when his wife accused their maid of having an affair with Puccini, who was known to wander off the reservation. The maid then committed suicide, and an autopsy revealed that she had died a virgin. Puccini’s wife was accused of slander, found guilty and sentenced to five months in jail; but a payment by Puccini spared her that experience.

Ultimately 11 of Puccini’s operas are among the 200 most performed operas in the world, and the abovementioned three are in the top 10. Only Verdi and Mozart have had more operas performed. By his death in 1924, Puccini had earned $4 million from his works.

I hope this excursion in art has helped you, as it did me, to escape at least briefly from the omnipresent bad news.
