The Cold Spring Harbor Public Library has been awarded $94,925 in state aid to create a new space for teenagers.

Hauppauge’s Innovation Park launches new energy initiative

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Long Island Cares — one of Long Island’s well-known charitable institutions — is completing the installation of solar panels on the 35,000 square-foot roof of its headquarters at Long Island Innovation Park at Hauppauge.

The $414,000 project is expected to generate 350,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy annually and 100 percent of it will be directed off-site to serve the electrical needs of households experiencing hardship and food insecurity. Long Island Cares is paying for system out of its reserves and available funds in its budget.

“This solar project represents a direct extension of the humanitarian work of Long Island Cares,” said Paule Pachter, the organization’s CEO. “Part of Long Island Cares’ energy focuses on providing emergency food relief to hungry and food insecure Long Islanders through the Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank. But we also engage in direct service programs that address the humanitarian human needs of veterans, seniors, immigrants and others struggling with economic and social challenges.”

The project is one of the first initiatives that are expected to help the industrial park meet by 2040 New York State’s ambitious goal of converting to 100 percent renewable energy.

The power pass along is facilitated through an energy management practice called “community solar,” whereby electricity generated by a solar power installation is shared by multiple households, companies or institutions. It’s an initiative of the Hauppauge Industrial Association, a prominent Long Island business group, and its solar task force, which was launched last year.

Co-chairs Scott Maskin, CEO of SUNation Solar Systems, one of Long Island’s largest installers of solar panels and equipment, and Jack Kulka, president and founder of Kulka LLC, a major development and construction firm, are behind the initiative.

“By taking the entire energy output of our solar installation and sending it offsite to provide discounted power to homes occupied by our lower-income neighbors, these households will have new found income to address some of their immediate needs,” Maskin said. “As such, it has a unique opportunity to bring forward both technology and value in a substantial way.

From an energy perspective, the park can act as a responsible, shining example for all of Long Island.”

“Through the successful embrace of this program,” Maskin added, “our park can distinguish itself as Long Island’s single largest energy producer, delivering revenue to its building owners while helping achieve New York State’s renewable energy goals.

It’s a win-win all around.”

The Long Island Cares project is expecting to be up and running in October, but Pachter said that the project has recently encountered several obstacles.

“When PSEG inspected our site, they said that the transformer needs to be changed and wiring upgraded to handle the energy,” he said.

Maskin said in a telephone interview that the issues are relatively common and protection equipment upgrades are something that will need be addressed as the industrial park expands its renewable projects. The transformer, he noted, will be covered by a maintenance agreement it has for this specific project. The additional $11,000 cost, Pachter said, will be the responsibility of L.I. Cares.

“We are building a power plant on the rooftop,” Maskin said. “If you think of the

complexity of it all, delays are to be expected.

We’re still pushing to have the system up and running in October.”

Pachter said that the construction phase has been underway for the last few months.

PSEGLI representative Elizabeth Flagler said that Community Distributed Generation makes renewable energy, particularly solar,

more accessible to renters and apartment dwellers. The array, she said, is connected to the grid and managed by a host who serves as a liaison with PSEGLI. The pass through is accomplished through accounting, rather than through wiring a system to beneficiaries.

The project is the first community solar project in the industrial complex.

Opioid epidemic erupts into surge in narcotic-related crimes

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Suffolk County Village Officials Association, which represents 32 villages, hosted a special presentation on the opioid crisis Sept. 26 at the Lake Grove Village Hall.

District Attorney Tim Sini (D), Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart and Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D) all spoke to the group about how the crisis has fueled a regional surge in illegal firearms seizures and sex trafficking crimes.

Most criminal cases in the county, the officials said, relate to opioid epidemic.

People initially became addicted to prescription painkillers and over time, as demand increased, supply went down, and prices went up. So, people gravitated toward heroin, the DA said, which is more potent and more dangerous.

Drug dealers, who realized that money can be made, began cutting their product with the synthetic opioid fentanyl, and more recently with fentanyl variations known as analogs. Fentanyl, Sini said, originates in China and is coming into the United States through the Mexican border.

The drug is also being sent into the U.S. over the Canadian border and from China through the U.S. mail.

County officials said they are drilling down as hard as possible.

Since 2016, the federal government assigned an analyst exclusively to Suffolk County Police Department to examine overdose information with maps and weekly and monthly overdose reports. The mapping system, known as High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program, or HIDTA, provides a real-time picture of overdoses. It also helps identify and coordinate candidates for the county’s preventing incarceration via opportunities for treatment program known as PIVOT for short.

“Everything we do is driven by analytics,” Hart said.

The county has also been using court-sanctioned surveillance methods such as phone tapping and search warrants to crack down on drug crimes. It issued more than 350 narcotics search warrants in 2018 and has eavesdropped on more than 150 phone lines. Consequently, the county has seized greater amounts of certain drugs and illegal firearms.

The officials said during their presentation that it’s targeting dealers who cause overdoses and charging them with manslaughter. Sini said that through surveillance, he’s learning that tougher manslaughter statutes result in dealers turning away from deadly drugs to instead peddle nonlethal drugs.

In 2018, the county also launched a sex trafficking unit that has identified and interviewed more than 200 sex trafficking victims. It has

arrested 34 people for 235 counts of sex-trafficking related charges and learned during the interviews how drug traffickers use opioids to addict young women to keep them dependent.

Toulon said that they’re gathering information while the women are in the sheriff’s facility, which is providing other useful information on drug and sex traffickers.

Victims, while in the sheriff’s facility, are involved in vocational and educational programs and put in touch with nongovernmental organizations that assist with counseling, drug treatment and job training. A big problem, though, Toulon said, is housing.

County officials emphasized that human trafficking is happening right here, right now in our communities. It can affect anyone from your neighbor to your niece and nephew.

Officials are also calling for the use of different terminology for prostitution.

“It’s a modern-day form of slavery and needs to be called what it is: sex trafficking,” Hart said.

The force has historically arrested the women and that was the case, Hart said, but the county’s approach is shifting and officials are now looking at the women as victims.

Officials are asking people to trust their own instincts.

“If you’re at a 7-Eleven and you see an older man in a car with a young woman who looks distressed, call or text us,” the officials said.

The county initiated a Text-a-Tip program. To reach officials, text TIP SUFFOLK to the number 888-777. Residents can confidentially share any information related to illicit or suspicious activity, including drug use or trafficking, Toulon said.

Paul Tonna, who serves as executive director of the village organization, said in a telephone interview after the event that a group of mayors were previously given a private presentation on the topic in graphic detail. The situation, he said, is horrible. The women are being forced to perform six or seven sex acts a day. He is calling for people such as PTAs and religious groups to sponsor awareness campaigns with officials.

Local villages have resources, Tonna said, such as constabulary that can also become the eyes and ears of county officials.

“We’re not here to say you need to do more,” Sini said. ”We need to think outside of the box.

Because of collective efforts, we can make greater strides.”

• Crime Stoppers: Some 4,225 calls received through 852-NARC Hotline from 2016-18 resulting in 245 arrests.

• Search warrants: More than 750 search warrants, mainly narcotic search warrants reported since 2016.

• Handgun seizures: 24 percent increase since 2016, with 49 percent increase from 2018-19.

• Shotgun/rifle seizures: 98 percent increase since 2016, 107 percent increase from 2018-19.

• Sex trafficking: 200+ victims identified, 34 people arrested for 235 counts of sextrafficking-related charges since 2018.

Long Islanders of all ages gather to protest climate inaction

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM “Climate change is not a lie, please don’t let our planet die,” a crowd of more than 50 people yelled in unison in front of Suffolk County’s H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge Sept. 27. Students, community groups, environmental activists and elected officials gathered to call for immediate action by governments and corporations on the current climate emergency.

The protest came on the last day of the Global Climate Strike, spearheaded by 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg, who joined some 250,000 protesters in Manhattan Sept. 20.

Kallen Fenster, a 13-year-old middle school student and founder of the youth organization Leadership for Environmental and Animal Protection, spoke on the effects climate change could have on future generations.

“Myself and the others here are like millions around the world that we represent today that are worried for their lives and yours,” he said. “Entire species are dying, our oceans are filthy with plastic waste, our beaches are unsafe to swim in, the air is polluted. What hope is there for my future children, or even worse, theirs?”

The middle schooler called on lawmakers to put more of an emphasis on climate change policy.

“Tonight, we the youth demand that local, state and federal lawmakers put climate policy first,” Fenster said. “We ask every adult to be a climate action hero and advance policy that will protect communities and its families. It will take all of us, it will take work and it will take sacrifices, but we have no choice, we have no ‘planet B.’” Other youth activists who spoke at the protest had similar sentiments.

Gabe Finger, a 7-year-old elementary student, said he wants more people to take this movement seriously.

“I want people to stop seeing climate change as a political belief and look at it as the dire crisis it is,” he said. “More and more people are seeing that global warming is something not to be ignored. This is not just a fight for the environment, but a fight for our lives — do whatever you can to help because hope is not lost yet.”

Camilla Riggs, a student at The Laurel Hill School in East Setauket, mentioned climate change will affect everyone.

“You may not believe in the science but it doesn’t mean you are immune to it or your children’s children,” she said. “This is not about us anymore, this is about the future of all of us.”

Elected officials called out the current White House administration, which has dialed back on climate change reform.

“This president has engaged in an assault

on all previous efforts to control and contain these greenhouse gas emissions, leaving the Paris accord was an embarrassment, said state Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove). “It is hard to imagine an American president would hire the worst polluters to run the agencies that are supposed to protect us.”

Lavine said despite that, the state has started to move in the right direction in curbing greenhouse emissions. He mentioned the state Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, congestion pricing going into effect in New York City and a ban on singleuse plastic as key steps forward.

State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) said we hopefully haven’t run out of time when it comes to climate change.

“We have to hand [the Earth] over to them responsibly but, to be honest with you, my generation hasn’t been responsible and we have to step up to the plate,” he said.

Elmer Flores, of New York’s 2nd District Democrats, spoke on how climate change is already affecting certain communities.

“Our low-income communities and minority population will disproportionately feel the negative impacts of climate change,” he said. “Research has shown that climate change, if left unaddressed, will worsen or cause unintended health consequences.”

Flores mentioned that when it comes to air quality, Hispanic and Latino residents have an asthma hospitalization rate that’s three times

more than their white counterparts.

Cheryl Steinhauer, special events manager of Hauppauge-based Long Island Cares, which helped organize the event with Action Together Long Island, spoke on the importance of calling for change.

“I feel like this is a necessary thing to do.

There are a lot of issues at the moment but really this is at the top and most important, at least to me, is taking care of our planet,” she said.

Vivianne S. Bicknese of East Northport died on Sept. 20 at 55 years of age. Beloved wife of Gary; loving daughter of Sheila Lieu and the late Ralph Lieu and his wife Chandra; dear sister of Virginia (Francis) Farnum, Elizabeth Lieu, and Sabrina (Kelvin) Lieu; fond aunt of Francis, Kimberly, Sean, and David; dear daughter-inlaw of Richard and Jeanette Bicknese. Visitation was held Aug. 25 at the Nolan Funeral Home, Northport. Funeral Mass was celebrated Sept.

26 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Centerport. Interment followed at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington.

On Sept. 22 Cold Spring Harbor firefighter Robert Thornton received the Bronze Medal of Valor from Suffolk County’s Vocational Education and Extension Board in recognition of his heroic actions, which saved the lives of two handicapped citizens. County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) was honored to join Thornton as he was recognized for his bravery.

“When an emergency arose, firefighter Thornton sprang into action to rescue two private citizens without any thought of the danger to himself,” Spencer said. “On behalf of the citizens of Suffolk County, I thank Robert for his continued service and dedication to keeping our neighbors safe when he is both on and off duty.”

On July 19, 2018, Thornton was driving north on Park Avenue in Huntington when he noticed flames coming from underneath a paratransit van. Seeing the imminent risk, he was able to flag down the driver and direct him to the shoulder of the road where he explained that the van was on fire and needed to be evacuated immediately. The driver became extremely upset and was unable to assist in

removing the occupants. Thornton attempted to activate the side door entry ramp to gain access to the van, but it was found to be inoperable.

By this time the fire had entered the front of the cab and the occupants were becoming agitated and coughing from the billowing smoke rapidly filling the van. Thornton opened the doors at the back of the van but realized he would need additional help to remove the passengers who were sitting in very heavy, motorized

wheelchairs. Thinking quickly on his feet, he stopped two passing trucks. Together, the drivers and Thornton were able to move the two occupants in their wheelchairs out of the van to safety. After saving the passengers, the two good Samaritans left the scene, but Thornton remained to direct traffic around the burning vehicle until the Huntington Manor Fire Department and Suffolk County Police officers arrived.

Together, they presented an assembly, which aims to prevent high school seniors from engaging in distracted driving, and comes days after AT&T’s It Can Wait Pledge Day on Sept. 19 and Don’t Text and Drive Awareness Day in Suffolk County on Sept. 18.

Research shows that nearly 9-in-10 people admit to using their smartphone while driving and people are doing much more than texting while behind the wheel; they’re checking email, accessing social media and even snapping photos. To illustrate the seriousness of the issue, the students came face-to-face with the very real dangers of distracted driving through a short documentary film. After the screening, the students discussed tactics to stay safe behind the wheel and signed the It Can Wait pledge to keep their eyes on the road, not on their phone.

The short film screened at the assembly told the heartbreaking story of a teenage boy named Forrest who lost his life after being struck on his bicycle by a distracted driver.

Through in-depth interviews with his family, students gained insight into the far-reaching impacts of distracted driving. They heard his siblings talk about how special his life was, and saw his mother’s pain as she remembered her loss. The full-length video entitled “The Face of Distracted Driving: Forrest’s Story”

“I’ve been partnering with AT&T for multiple years now to bring this assembly to high schools throughout my district. It’s a message that our young people, who are just beginning to drive and have a lifetime ahead of them, need to hear over and over again,” Spencer stated. “Students have the power to prevent distracted driving tragedies and to encourage their family and friends to do the same. As administrators, parents and role models we must lead by example, stay vigilant and avoid becoming desensitized to the dangers of distracted driving.”

Spencer said that he is thankful to AT&T for its support and to the Northport High School for its dedication to spreading this important safety message. Northport High School Principal Daniel Danbusky echoed the sentiment.

“We are excited to bring the It Can Wait Safe Driving presentation to Northport this year,” he said. “With the tremendous spike in the number of distracted driving accidents, injuries and sadly, deaths, it is important for our young drivers, many of whom have grown up with access to a smartphone, to understand the dangers that are involved with taking their eyes off the road, even for a brief few seconds.”

Recent statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are a sobering reminder about how grave the consequences can be. An average of nine people a day are killed and over 1,000 are injured in distracted driving incidents and the age group most

commonly impacted happens to be teenagers.

“At a time where many teens are preparing for their futures and to take advantage of the great opportunities on the horizon for them, it is important that we, as a school community, join in the effort to educate them about how the simplest acts, such as looking at a cell phone while driving, can have the largest consequences on their futures,” Danbusky said.“Smartphones have improved our lives in so many ways – but they have also created a new generation of distracted drivers.”

Estate of first known African American poet receives preservation grant

Joseph Lloyd Manor House selected as grant recipient in competitive program for preserving historic buildings.

Preservation Long Island announced in September that Joseph Lloyd Manor House was selected as one of this year’s Preserve New York (PNY) grantees. The grant of $7,900 will allow Preservation Long Island to hire CTA Architects and Collado Engineers of New York City to complete a building condition report that focuses on Joseph Lloyd Manor’s structural and environmental control needs. By studying these aspects of the building’s functionality, Preservation Long Island can determine the best course of action to guide facilities improvements for continued preservation and improved interpretation of the structure.

The Preservation League of NYS and its program partners at the New York State Council on the Arts helped fund the work, which includes additional funding generously provided

by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

The Joseph Lloyd Manor House is an excellent example of a building that possesses multiple periods of significance and illustrates the history and various approaches to historic preservation practice. The building was constructed in the Georgian architectural style but has additional modifications that date to the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally built circa 1768 for Joseph Lloyd and served as the second manorial seat of the Manor of Queens Village. The manor, a provisioning plantation, originally encompassed the entirety of what is now known as Lloyd Neck and was also the home of Jupiter Hammon, an enslaved man who was the first known African American poet to have his work published.

Emma Rivers lead her team in assists with 18 and Emily Giacini followed with 14 assists along with two blocks.

Opioids and crime Remember: Early voting begins Oct. 26 The opioid epidemic is so expansive that it seems impossible that one individual can end the overdoses and deaths and the related crimes. But even in the smallest municipalities — the villages, fire districts, school districts, people have the opportunity to institute real change.

On Sept. 26, members of the Suffolk County Village Officials Organization met to hear from the district attorney, the police commissioner and the sheriff about the current state of the opioid crisis. Presenters reviewed a wide range of resources and programs available in the county, but also emphasized that we all need to think outside the box to collectively address the explosion of narcotic drug use, which has also led to a local increase in illegal gun crimes and sex trafficking.

Village officials should hold public information sessions on what was learned at this meeting and create committees comprised of residents committed to help. People need to be better informed. In turn, other community leaders can invite speakers into local schools and religious centers to speak on the topic.

The facts are alarming.

In 2018, Suffolk police launched a sex trafficking investigation unit that has identified and interviewed over 200 local sex trafficking victims. County leaders say that the people behind these crimes exploit the young women by making them dependent upon opioids and demanding repayment through sex.

Instead of calling it prostitution, law enforcement prefers that people now refer to these crimes as sex trafficking, and a modern day form of slavery.

An increase in narcotics-related, court-authorized surveillance in the county through search warrant and phone-line eavesdropping has translated into a 49 percent increase in illegal handgun seizures and a doubling of illegal shotgun seizures.

If you are an elected official in one of these villages, also consider opening a line of communication on the topic with residents. Submissions can be anonymous.

The county has outlined as its goals for the explosion of narcotic use and related crimes: prevention, treatment and recovery.

Whatever your ideas are to better accomplish this, please let it become more widely known with your local elected officials, who can convey this to other branches of government. As a news publication, we also welcome your input.

Since 2013, an estimated 2,109 people have died of an opioid overdose in the county, according to its statistics. That toll would be higher, but thankfully Narcan, the opioid overdose antidote, is credited with saving lives and has reversed 599 overdoses so far in 2019.

Clearly, though, there still is ongoing, nightmarish trouble stemming from prescription pain killers and illicit opioid addictions. Action is needed.

A strong democracy requires a strong electorate and early voting invigorates our elections. This past legislative session, we passed Early Voting in New York.

Beginning Oct. 26, New Yorkers can vote at an early polling site and have their voices counted!

Nassau County designated 15 early polling sites and you can vote at any location you would like. In Suffolk County, early polling sites are by township, and you must vote at the location designated for your town.

It’s a newfound flexibility for those whose work schedules, commutes and family obligations make getting to the polls on Election Day impractical. It also

provides relief for people with physical limitations, where waiting in long lines can be painful. It will increase voter participation and make voting more accessible. For many, it becomes the difference between voting and not voting.

By giving more options to voters, we make our democracy even better. Voting is our right as Americans, and it is the obligation of the government to ensure every citizen can exercise that right.

Early voting is especially critical for Long Island, where 280,000 residents commute to work. For these folks, Election Day evolved into a logistical nightmare.

They juggled train schedules, requested permission to either leave work early or

come in late, and rushed to make voting times. In 2017, an accident on election night shut down the LIRR for hours and countless voters missed their opportunity to cast a ballot.

Early voting removes all of these hurdles. By giving voters the flexibility to vote at a convenient time, we increase the number of citizens participating in the electoral process.

Instead of skipping Election Day, with its long lines and stress over how long it will take, New Yorkers will now be able to vote with ease.

It’s a win-win for all.

Carson, Murphy and Climate Strike II News about last Friday’s second Youth Climate Strike by an estimated four million protesters worldwide was sadly overshadowed in the U.S. by breaking impeachment news.

Strike organizers dedicated the global event to the memory of Rachel Carson because Sept. 27 was the 57th anniversary of the publication of her revolutionary book “Silent Spring” in 1962.

Locally, it is worth noting the connection that local environmental champion Robert Cushman Murphy had to Carson and her book, which has been often listed as one of the most important nonfiction books of the 20th century.

Murphy, who lived in Mount Sinai, Old Field and Stony Brook over his lifetime, was world famous for his research on oceanic birds, and Rachel Carson was famous as the author of “The Sea Around Us.” While writing “Silent Spring,” Carson sought advice and information from her friend and colleague.

In the book, Carson wrote about how Murphy and five others sued the federal government in 1958 to stop indiscriminate aerial DDT spraying across Long Island.

The lawsuit went all the way to the Supreme Court, and while unsuccessful, set an important precedent for private citizens’ right to advocate in the courts for the environment. Subsequent events led Murphy, his wife, Grace, and others

to form Conservationists United of Long Island, which was a predecessor of today’s global Environmental Defense Fund.

When first published, “Silent Spring” was attacked by scientists representing the formidable power of chemical and agricultural corporations.

Carson’s bombshell hit came out while she was physically weak from a long struggle with cancer, and she had limited ability to defend her work in the media. Murphy and others became Carson’s stand-ins, defending her work at this early critical time, and the book went on to become a best seller for decades. In 1972, DDT was banned for agricultural use in the United States.

We all owe a great debt to the bravery and dedication of Murphy and the early “conservationists” and should be proud that so many came from our local area. They can and should be remembered as important role models to inspire the brave young people who are showing such dedication to saving our fragile planet today.

Swimming away from high school problems

W

e think we know our kids, but really the converse is true.

My son recently told me that he thinks I’m angry every time I swim laps in a pool. At first, I dismissed the observation because swimming brings me peace.

And then I thought about my junior year of high school, when I joined my one and only swim team.

I loved the water, I had a few friends on the team and I was D. None determined to do of the above something difBY DANIEL DUNAIEF ferent when each day in school felt like a bad version of “Groundhog Day,” long before the Bill Murray film arrived in theaters.

I had several shortcomings. For starters, I didn’t know how to do a flip turn. To the experienced swimmer, that’s as laughable as asking a NASCAR driver how to change gears or a baseball player which end of the bat to hold. It’s a basic skill. I’d approach the wall, gasping for air, roll to my right and kick hard.

Most of the time, I’d slam my foot into the lane marker and, on occasion would kick the poor swimmer in lane 5. I swam in lane 6, which was where swimmers who needed life jackets trained. The best swimmers occupied lane 1. They never seemed to need a breath, had hydrodynamic bodies that made them look like torpedoes and seemed slightly bored after an exhausting practice.

Oh, and they also wore Speedo bathing suits well. For someone accustomed to the boxing trunk bathing suits that I still wear today, Speedos seemed way too small. Besides, I’m not sure the small, colorful lightweight suits allowed me to shave even a tenth of a second off my barge-floating-downstream speed.

Each practice, the coach would tell us to swim 20 laps back and forth as a warm-up.

By the end of the warm-up, which I never finished, we started practice. At that point, I was leaning hard on the wall, wondering whether I should climb out of the pool and grab some French fries.

When we dove off the blocks at the start of the race, I must have entered the water at the wrong angle. My goggles scraped down my nose and landed in front of my mouth, which made it impossible to see or breathe.

Flopping blindly, I’d zigzag in slow motion across the pool.

Each practice completely drained me. My exhausted arms pulled through the water, splashing where others were gliding. My legs slapped at the water, instead of serving as propellers. And yet, something about the incredible energy required to survive each practice helped me, both mentally and physically.

I’m sure I lost weight. After all, such inefficient swimming burns off considerably

more calories than floating effortlessly hither and yon. More importantly, though, I worked out everything that bothered me in my head as I listened to the gurgling noises my mouth made while I wiggled back and forth. Each lap, I replayed conversations that went awry, standardized tests that were like electroshock therapy and the missed social opportunities.

Gnashing my teeth, I worked out frustrations that built up during the day or the week. The herculean effort either removed toxins or prevented them from cluttering my brain. Sitting in my room at home after practice, I felt more at peace than I had at any point during the day.

But what my son must have perceived as I do laps today are the habits I formed during that winter season. My body instantly remembers how to use swimming to release tension. He may see the residual physical manifestations of the cauldron of emotions that I carried back and forth across that icy pool. And, hey, maybe I’d look like a happier swimmer if I ever learned how to do a flip turn.

A delightful escape to a more refined world

I

t’s a time of transition. We can feel the weather changing and the seasons moving on. One day the temperature is 75 degrees, the next it might be 85 degrees, then in come the 60 degree days and the 50 degree nights. We live in a place where nature cycles through its daily gyrations to quarterly new worlds.

Those changes, if not on a daily basis, are nonetheless predictable from one year to the next.

our citizenry.

Just look at the front page of any daily newspaper or listen to the top of the news on radio or television or read the blasts of news on your cellphone, and it’s enough to make for discomfort. There is undoubtedly a story about the latest bits of information seeping out from Republican President Donald Trump’s phone call to the Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in which he asked about former vice president Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, and his son Hunter’s business dealings there. The story then quickly jumps to impeachment inquiries and who may question whom on the matter, along with polls purportedly measuring support for such action. The words “treason” and “civil war” have crept into the media reports.

There has also got to be something about North Korea’s missiles being recently launched toward Japan even though — or perhaps just because — talks between the United States officials and the North Koreans seem to be back on again. One of the latest projectiles actually landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, making the Japanese exceedingly nervous.

A story about the negative effects of the tariffs on the global economy is a given. Global growth is predicted to slow to half of what was expected six months ago, and the evidence of the slowdown can be seen in less production on the factory floors. This translates into fewer jobs, less pay and a reduced standard of living.

That means less consumer expenditures, which causes the economy to slow further. We also know the consequences of a faltering economy can be significant social unrest.

The global picture is further complicated

by Brexit, that almost comic yet deadly serious tug-of-war playing out in British politics, which threatens future commerce and trade across the English Channel and indeed the world. With uncertainty, money is flowing into the American dollar, seen as a safe haven. This in turn makes the dollar stronger, which makes exports more expensive, further depressing trade.

So is there still room on the front page and in our minds for news of Iran, Peru, Hong Kong and India with its onion crisis?

#MeToo, gun control and climate change to vie for space in the news roundup. And more on taxing the wealthy, the opioid crisis, breaking up big tech and, of course, the runup to the 2020 election are regular offerings in the news.

No wonder “Downton Abbey” is proving to be so popular at the movies. What delightful escapism to a world of orderly households, elaborate dinners and table settings, gorgeous clothing, comforting etiquette, bucolic scenery and crises over whether or not to add a refrigerator in the kitchen. The biggest challenge in that world is preparing properly for a visit from the king and queen of England.

So here is the antidote to the frenzy of the news. Either take some time away, as I did this past weekend when I left town to visit family and friends. I completely shut down newscasts, even those on my cellphone. Or go to the movies and enter the polite world of 1927 and the Crawley family. Or read the local news in the hometown papers and on the web and social media. There you know that if it’s from TBR News Media it’s both trustworthy and sane.
