Summer can bring many happy memories – family vacations, summer camp, days at the shore, staying up late and watching the sun set. No matter what your summer traditions include, be sure to keep in mind your heart and brain health throughout the longer daylight hours.

Here are the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s top 10 tips for a heart-healthy summer: •Learn Hands-Only CPR. Days by the pool and ocean can be fun, but always be prepared for the unthinkable. Hands-Only CPR has only two steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911, and press hard and fast in the center of the chest.

•Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids (preferably water) throughout the day and before, during and after working out to maintain salt-water balance. Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

•Exercise smarter, not harder. Plan your workout for the cooler parts of the day — either early morning or early evening when the sun’s radiation is at its least. If you must exercise during the hottest part of the day or in high humidity, decrease exercise intensity and duration. And remember, you can get a great workout indoors by going to a gym or walking at the mall.

•Dress the part. Wear minimal amounts of

clothing that allow for quick evaporation of sweat. Choose lightweight, light-colored and breathable fabrics, such as cotton.

•Choose fresh veggies. Take advantage of fresh seasonal veggies. Load up skewers with mushrooms, peppers, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash or other veggies. Spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray and grill until lightly blackened.

•Pack to play. When taking a family road trip, plan to incorporate regular physical activity into your daily routine. Pack a football, soccer ball, frisbee or paddle ball so that you can be physically active while away.

•Enjoy fruit pops. Homemade freezer pops are an easy, fun treat for kids to make and enjoy.

•Protect yourself from the sun. Wear widebrimmed hats, always apply water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and reapply sunscreen every two hours.

•Head indoors. When the heat gets unbearable, try indoor activities at your local YMCA or rec center like basketball, swimming, yoga or racquetball.

•Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Elevator construction at H’ton LIRR station to cause delays

BY VICTORIA ESPINOZA VICTORIA@TBRNEWSPAPERS.COM Huntington Long Island Rail Road commuters may face some additional strain in their usual commute in the coming weeks.

The elevator at the South Parking Garage at the Huntington LIRR station is now out of service and is being replaced, with construction that began July 11. According to a press release from the town, this project is “much needed,” to increase the reliability, safety and comfort for those who regularly use the elevator. The town said it estimates that the elevator will be out of service for about four months, with construction wrapping in November.

“We realize that no matter what the alternative, riders will be inconvenienced,” the press release said. “Please be assured that our contractor will endeavor to complete the project as quickly as possible.”

In an effort to make the change as painless as possible, the town asked for input from residents to help create options for those who need the elevator because of physical handicaps.

“I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we’re not on the first page of Newsday, but we do have real problems,” Georgina White, a Huntington resident said at the June town meeting where the input was gathered.

“This is really a hardship. I did go online and take the survey, but the proposed suggestions are really poor. The handicapped and the elderly, and the people with strollers are going

to be hurt. I suggest that you try to put the shuttle, that’s handicapped accessible, from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. It needs to happen.

She acknowledged the elevator has had a lot of issues in recent years, including breakdowns and filth, and commended the town for finally getting a new elevator. But she encouraged the town to improve how it gets the message out about the changes, as she feared not enough residents knew about the changes that were going to soon occur.

Based on those responses and the town’s recommendations, the following actions will be taken: 1. The town has added handicapped parking spaces on both sides of the tracks.

On the north side, the additional spaces are on ground level in the parking garage. On the south side, the additional spaces are on level 2 of the parking garage. Both locations will provide easy access to the handicapped ramps. If at all possible, the town suggests users should try to arrange their trip so eastbound and westbound trips depart and arrive on the same track. Information on which platforms trains usually depart from or arrive on is contained in the full Port Jefferson line LIRR schedule.

2. Consider alternate stations. In particular, parking is available at the Northport station, which has only one track.

3. A town Public Safety vehicle will be available at the station during peak hours — 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 9 p.m. — to

4. The town has reached out to the LIRR and asked that announcements about track changes be made as early as possible, so commuters will know if there is an issue before they board the train.

5. If a rider has questions or a problem, they should call the Department of Transpor-

“I appreciate all you’re trying to do,” White said. “Could we work together to communicate some better things for people in our town?”

After she spoke at the meeting, Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) thanked her for her suggestions and encouraged her to meet with the town’s director of transportation to continue a dialogue.

The news adds to rider woes, as those dealing with Huntington’s maintenance may also be delayed by Long Island Rail Road work at Pennsylvania Station.

Officials create program to inspire ambitious teens

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Beneath the sunny rays in Smithtown’s Blydenburgh County Park June 29, Suffolk County Legislator and Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) announced a new program to celebrate Suffolk’s youth community.

The Distinguished Youth Award program is meant to promote and recognize the achievements and initiatives in service of Suffolk County’s youngest contributing members.

The program is open to county residents between the ages of 13 and 18, and registrants will work with local officials throughout the course of a year to lay out plans and goals that touch on volunteerism, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County, and physical fitness.

Gregory announced the program alongside young residents who have already registered, and with colleague, Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset).

“The goal in establishing this program is to encourage young people to become well-rounded and engaged in local issues and initiatives,” Gregory said at the press event. “Our young people are our future. This program is one way to build a foundation on which these young adults can continue to develop a connection to their communities, to understand their needs, and to explore solutions. We are encouraging them to be leaders whose roots are firmly planted in Suffolk County.”

According to Gregory’s office, the program is modeled after the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and challenges participants to take part in two or more program categories: volunteer service, personal development, — William Spencer exploration of Suffolk County parks, and physical fitness. Medals will be awarded to participants based on the number of categories in which they engage as part of their individual challenge.

The bronze medal will be awarded to teens that successfully complete two of the four program areas. The silver medal will be awarded to participants who complete three of the four program areas. The gold medal, which signifies the highest achievement, will recognize participants who complete their established goals in all four program areas.

Fellow legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) co-sponsored the resolution.

“Suffolk County is lucky to be the home to so many wonderful young people who have distinguished themselves in many ways,” Spencer said in a statement. “It will be a great honor to recognize them individually.”

Kennedy echoed the sentiments.

“In Suffolk County we have many accomplished young men and women,” she said at the event. “The Distinguished Youth Award will foster an environment where our youth will continue to accomplish great things, and grow into civically minded adults.”

A 26-year-old man from Huntington Station was driving a 1997 Toyota on the corner of East 11th Street in Huntington Station July 9 at around 3:36 p.m. without a required interlock device installed and knowing his license was suspended three or more times, police said. According to police, at around 2 p.m.

July 6, a 34-year-old man from Amityville drove a gray 2011 BMW on Straight Path in Dix Hills with a suspended license.

Prior to that, on the same day, he jumped a wood picket fence and ran through a resident’s backyard on Seaman Neck Road in Dix Hills, police said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Drug bust

On Ditmar Lane in East Northport, at around 7:30 p.m. July 5, a 26-year-old man from East Northport was found to be carrying a hypodermic needle and heroin, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic instrument.

Bike burglars

A 2001 Yamaha YZ80 dirt bike was stolen from outside a residence on Deer Park Avenue in Dix Hills at 11 p.m. July 9, according to police.

Police said at 2:30 p.m. July 6 an unknown person stole a black bicycle from outside a residence on Allison Court in Huntington Station.

Break-in

The front right passenger window of a 2015 Nissan Armada parked in the driveway of a residence on Suncrest Drive in Dix Hills was smashed at around 8:30 p.m. July 6 by an unknown person, who then stole a wallet and a pair of sunglasses from inside the car, according to police.

A 49-year-old man from Brentwood was driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer with a suspended license on the corner of Main Street and Prospect Street in Huntington July 5 at around 9:50 a.m., police said.

When stopped by an officer for a damaged brake light, he provided a different person’s name, date of birth and license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and criminal impersonation.

Unwanted guests

On June 30 at 1 a.m., a 21-year-old woman from East Northport was discovered standing inside someone else’s home on Gerri Road in East Northport, according to police. She was arrested July 9 and charged with second-degree criminal trespassing.

A 23-year-old man from Huntington Station entered and remained inside a residence on East 20th Street in Huntington Station at around 7:30 p.m. July 6 after being told not to be at the location, police said. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal trespassing.

Police said a 33-year-old woman from Freeport was found to be in possession of marijuana on the corner of Fairground Avenue and East 4th Street in Huntington Station July 6 at around 11:20 a.m. She was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

At around 12:30 p.m. July 8, an unknown person stole seven skin care products from Sephora at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station, police said.

County Eye in the sky: Suffolk implements new security cameras

By KyLE Barr Be careful what actions you take, because the police are watching.

Suffolk County Police Department officials announced the implementation of 12 overt surveillance cameras throughout the county July 10, in an effort to deter crime.

The pilot program began in October 2016 with the implementation of a single camera in both the 1st and 2nd precincts. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said that cameras were installed in the five other precincts early June.

Two of these cameras were positioned in Huntington Town, with one displayed on top of a telephone pole outside a small shopping center at the corner of Rockne Street and Broadway in Greenlawn.

“We want people to know about it.” Sini said of the camera program. “Local government is doing everything in their power to increase the quality of life in our communities.”

Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said that the town is dealing with the impact of several recent crimes, specifically recent shootings in Greenlawn that are “all too fresh in our minds.”

“These incidents of crime take away the feeling of safety,” Spencer said. “We will not tolerate violence in our community. These cameras put criminals on notice to say, ‘Don’t come here.’”

The cameras are full color and full motion, and can be accessed remotely through any officer or SCPD official that has access to

Wi-Fi. The camera equipment was purchased for about $130,000 in a program funded by SCPD asset forfeiture dollars. However, the plan for a new real-time crime center, part of which will be to monitor the overt security cameras, will be created using SCPD’s normal operating budget.

The cameras are additions to a surveillance system that includes a number of license-plate readers along intersections and hidden cameras placed in areas such as local public parks.

“While the discreet cameras catch crime, the overt cameras do the same but they deter crime as well,” Sini said.

SCPD officials said that depending on community feedback, the cameras could be moved into different positions or to different areas.

On the topic of privacy, Sini responded that people should not expect privacy in a public space.

“The message we want to send is think twice before doing something illegal — think twice before doing something that demotes the quality of life for our residents, because we are watching,” Sini said.

Several nearby residents were happy to have the new camera system in their community.

“It’s a blessing,” said Greenlawn resident Earline Robinson about the implementation of the camera. She said she was concerned about crime, including gang activity, in the area and especially those of several shootings that happened in the community just in the past month.

“I think it’s a great idea,” he said. “We’ll see what it does and I guess we’ll see how it goes from there.”

The cameras are meant to be hung from telephone poles and are colored bright white and wrapped with a blue stripe that reads “police.” The camera positioned outside the shopping center in Greenlawn looks down at a strip that has been the site of a number of crimes, including several robberies.

One Stop Deli owner Mohammad Afzaal said that in the nine years he’s owned his store, it had been raided four times. Once, robbers broke into the safe behind the counter, and several times he had walked in to find the store in disarray. From those robberies, he estimates he lost about $11,000.

“Sometimes my camera doesn’t work,” Afzaal said, pointing to the camera hanging in the corner of his store. “But the camera out there, it will work.”

DuWayne Gregory proposes app to combat drug addiction

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com The fight against substance abuse among young people on the North Shore and around Suffolk County is set to enter the 21st century.

Suffolk County Legislator and Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) launched efforts for the county to develop a smartphone application at the June 20 legislative meeting that will provide users with quick and easy access to drug addiction services. It will also provide information on how to recognize and prevent opioid overdoses for families who are struggling with how to protect their loved ones.

“This mobile app will literally put lifesaving information directly into the hands of those who need it most,” Gregory said at a press conference in Hauppauge last week.

“There is a desperate need for instant access to addiction resources. Just a few weeks ago, 22 people over a two-day span overdosed on opioids in Suffolk. There are so many valuable resources and programs in our county, and we must do all we can to make it easier for those battling substance abuse to reach out for help.”

The app will provide locations of nearby hospitals and treatment centers, links to organizations and support hotlines and information on training to administer Narcan, an overdose reversal medication.

Gregory said he believes the app will be a worthwhile endeavor given the recent launch of New York City’s mobile app, Stop OD NYC, which provides overdose prevention education and connects individuals with local programs. According to his office, Suffolk officials are considering modeling Suffolk’s own app after the city’s version and have been in touch with city health officials as they look to develop the proposal request.

James Tomarken said the addition of the app is another powerful weapon to use in the ongoing battle against drug addiction.

“Substance abuse affects everyone in the community,” he said at the event. “An application that consolidates information that can be accessed from anywhere on a mobile device offers one more tool in our toolkit for dealing with this public health crisis.”

Ann Marie Csorny, Suffolk County Community Mental Hygiene Services director,

agreed, saying this idea makes the most sense for the younger generation.

“Today’s youth have come to rely heavily on their smartphones, so putting substance abuse information into a format that is easily accessible to them makes sense,” she said.

Suffolk County is no stranger to the nation’s growing opioid problem. In 2014 Suffolk had the highest number of overdose deaths involving heroin of all New York counties and had the most overdose deaths where prescription opioids were a factor, according to a 2016 New York State Comptroller’s report.

Donna DiBiase, founder and executive director of A2R Magazine, a publication related to journeys in addiction and recovery said branching out to new platforms like cellphones are crucial to winning the fight.

“A mobile app of this nature could be a vital resource at a time when we are losing our next generation to this epidemic,” she said in a statement. “There isn’t a person that I meet who doesn’t know someone — a neighbor, a family member, a friend — who has been touched by this disease.

Empowerment and education is so important, and we need to continue to find ways to get information to those who are struggling with addiction, whether it be through an app, a hotline or a magazine.”

The resolution was filed by Gregory at the June 20 meeting and will go before the Health Committee July 20.

Programming Pals

Fourth-grade students in Norwood Avenue Elementary School’s coding club recently visited Northport High School as part of the district’s collaborative program called Programming Pals. The fourth-graders worked in conjunction with high school students to learn more about coding and Makerspace-type activities.

High school students created different centers through which the fourth-graders rotated. Stations included: Mad Libs, where students coded using different adjectives to produce a funny story; Tic Tac Toe, where students had to choose num-

bers in a coded version of the game to play against the computer and win; App Inventor, where students programmed an app to be customized in the way they want it to appear on a phone; Fidget Spinner, where students used hot glue, bearings, washers and popsicle sticks to create the popular gadget; and Ozobots, where high school students helped fourth-graders navigate how to program small robots to follow a specific path by following commands.

“Our hope is that the younger students get to see and experience what is offered and available in the high school,” said instructional technology resource teacher Jennifer Baranaskas.

Four Oldfield Middle School students recently earned top spots in the National Science Olympiad, a science trivia contest offered in a variety of categories. The four eighth-graders participated in the earth science category and received first and second place among all participating schools across the country.

Ryan Cook was named a first-place winner in the contest, while Cameron Best, Eric Dombrower and Evan Mock were named second-place winners. Oldfield Middle School also had the highest combined score among all participating schools in the Earth Science category. The

combined score was the sum of the top 10 scorers in the school and were made up of the first- and second-place winners, as well as students Ryan Armstrong, Kimberly DeSantis, Ty Ellenbogen, Jenna Forestiero, Emma Hardwick, Theodore Krijnse Locker, Mia Kushner and Jacky Xie. The students prepared for the contest under the guidance of their earth science teachers Phyllis Hoar and Karen Fisher, and medals were presented to the first- and second-place winners. Principal Joanne Giordano will receive an award bearing all the top scorers’ names in honor of the school’s high combined score.

Several elementary school students from throughout the Northport-East Northport School District recently participated in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2017 Elementary School Science Fair, where the district took home four first-place and seven honorable mention awards. The winners were recognized and presented with certificates during a recent board of education meeting.

More than 100 Suffolk County schools took part in the competition with only seven winners earning first place from grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Kindergartner Matthew Macartney, fourth-grader Lily Rogers, fifth-grader Faith Hoerning and Dickinson Avenue students in Jill-Marie Mika’s third-grade class were all named firstplace winners for their outstanding projects.

In addition, honorable mention was awarded to Bellerose Avenue Elementary School kindergartners in Deborah Ronan’s

class, kindergartner Michaela Bruno, firstgrader Matthew Pokorny, second-grader Lily Suarez, third-grader Lucy Mulholland and fourth-graders Jacob Raimo and Samantha DeNisco.

To showcase their projects at the BNL Elementary School Science Fair, the students first had to participate in their school-level science fairs. Approximately 450 students from all six of the district’s elementary school’s took part in the fairs, including one group project from every class in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Secondary teachers from both middle schools and the high school judged the projects on several components. The strongest projects were then nominated to continue on at the second annual Science Fair Expo, with first-place winners moving up to the Brookhaven National Laboratory level.

“It is truly an outstanding accomplishment of our elementary school students,” said District Chairperson of Science & Technology Education David Storch.

Walking for wellness

The Ocean Avenue Elementary School community banded together on June 2 for the school’s annual Walk for Wellness event. Family members showed their support by attending the annual walk, which focuses on promoting health and wellness and has taken place for more than 20 years.

Starting at the school, fifth-graders led the way down the hill with students holding up health-related signs and showing their school pride. The Northport Police Department was on hand to keep everyone

safe as the students walked along Main Street, Norwood Avenue and Dogwood Road until they reached the school again.

Principal Sabina Larkin also walked with the classes as they cheered.

During the walk, students encouraged drivers to honk in support and many residents came outside to greet the children as they passed. To prepare for the big walk, students in third- to fifth-grade took part in a Fun Run during the month of May. This run allowed them to run a total of eight or more miles during recess.

Honoring a Rocky Point grad, service member after July 4 After our nation commemorated the anniversary of our fight for independence July Fourth, there are many examples of military service that would make our Founding Fathers proud. The sacrifices that are made by our local citizens to protect this country should not be overlooked or forgotten.

Joseph Cognitore Jr. graduated from Rocky Point High School in 1991. He is the son of Post 6249 Rocky Point VeterBY Rich AcRitelli ans of Foreign Wars Commander Joseph Cognitore, who was the last Grand Marshall of the Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Before going to college, Cognitore Jr. enlisted in the United States Army Reserves and was stationed at the military center in Shoreham, where he was trained as a medical supply specialist. In high school, Cognitore was a talented soccer and baseball player, who later went on to Suffolk County Community College, where he both played sports and studied criminal justice.

After completing his first two years of school, he transferred to SUNY Brockport where he entered the Army ROTC program to become an officer. While he was determined to gain his commission, he continued studying criminal justice and minored in military history. In 1995, Cognitore graduated and was immediately promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. He was later trained in the difficult job of being an ordinance officer at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

A short time later he was deployed to South Korea where he was stationed near North Korea on the Demilitarized Zone.

Cognitore worked in a missile maintenance company that helped ensure the air defense of American and South Korean forces against the constant threat of attack from North Korea.

As a young second lieutenant, he served as a platoon leader who learned a great deal about the importance of taking care of his men in a combat area. Cognitore said he enjoyed traveling around South Korea and later volunteered for the explosives ordinance disposal unit. After serving for a year on the

Korean Peninsula, he was promoted to a first lieutenant and he trained at ordinance training facilities in Alabama, Florida and Maryland. He was later ordered to Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan to handle the sensitive ordinance materials at the base.

During the 9/11 attacks, fighter jets from Selfridge were scrambled too late to intercept Flight 93 over the skies of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. While he was serving in the upper Midwest, he said the attacks were devastating for him to watch. He grew up an hour from lower Manhattan, and right before the acts of terrorism, Cognitore visited the World Trade Center towers.

In 2007, he left his family in Michigan to be deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. His primary mission was to help train the Afghan Civil Order Police, to help ensure that the Taliban would not influence areas that were liberated from their previous control. It was another unique experience for the local officer who worked with NATO countries from England, Germany, the Czech Republic, Canada and Turkish military forces. For a brief time, Cognitore served at a Forward Operating Base established by the German army that was frequently attacked by the Taliban. Cognitore said he was thankful for his wife, Carrie, for her love and ability to take care of their home and children, Claire and Joseph Cognitore IV, while he was deployed.

In 2012, with his father at his side, Cognitore was promoted as a lieutenant colonel, and he accepted a new position as an executive officer of a transportation company at his base. With every job, duty station and elevated rank, he has continually distinguished himself as a capable officer that could handle all of his military tasks. Like his father, who is a Vietnam veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star, Cognitore has an incredibly bright future within the military. He has already graduated from the Command and General Staff training program and will be attending the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

As we take time to honor the historic actions of our Founding Fathers, may we thank our current patriots who still continue to strengthen the American way of life for current and future generations of this great nation.

Bike-sharing program coming to Suffolk County

The wheels are in motion to launch a long-developed regional bike share program in the county that will help relieve traffic congestion, expand mobility options, boost businesses and advocate a healthier lifestyle for residents of all ages.

County Executive Steve Bellone (D) announced last week the Department of Economic Development and Planning has issued a “request for information” due back July 13 to better determine cost estimates, possible vendors and proper implementation of a system like this. The county executive will seek grant funding from a state agency and aims to have a pilot program implemented by summer 2018.

The proposal serves as part of Bellone’s Connect Long Island Initiative, which aims to “create new mass-transit connections between major roadways, Long Island Rail Road stations and transit-oriented downtowns” to promote economic growth in the region.

“We view bike-sharing as a win-win that provides greater tourism and economic development while providing a healthy alternative that ultimately reduces automobile emissions,” Bellone said in a statement.

“This latest initiative ensures that Suffolk

County remains a leader in embracing cutting-edge transportation alternatives that better connect residents to our vibrant downtowns.”

The bike share program proposes that sturdy, easy-to-ride three-speed and sevenspeed bikes equipped with GPS navigation systems will be stationed near transit spots, like train stations, to provide “last-mile connectivity” to far-away destinations like parks and businesses for residents, commuters and visitors. A rider would be able to park and lock up his or her bike at any station in town at a regular user rate to be determined.

The program is being modeled on successful ones currently in operation in Long Beach and on campus at Stony Brook University, which launched its own bike share system in spring 2013.

“If the Stony Brook University ‘Wolf Ride’ bike-sharing program is any indication, this will be a winning initiative for the people of Suffolk County,” Stony Brook University President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley said in a statement. “[The university] has been providing our students, faculty and staff with a sustainable and healthy transportation alternative that is effectively reducing our carbon footprint; it has grown in popularity and usage over time and I suspect the residents of our region will respond to the County’s program with similar enthusiasm.”

Suffolk County Downtown and Transit Development Director Jonathan Keyes, who worked with the Long Island Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to bring the program here, said visitors to the region wanting to avoid summertime traffic jams will want to take advantage of it, adding it could also help bring more young workers back on Long Island.

“What’s cool about it is it’s a nice, healthy alternative for people, especially on a great day, by giving incentive to leave the car behind, take a mass transit for the day, enjoy

the nice weather and get some great exercise as well,” Keyes said in a video made to showcase the program.

Wayne Horsley, the regional director of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, said in a statement he and the department are in full support of the proposal.

“Bicycling is a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way to explore Long Island,” Horsley said. “State Parks applauds County Executive Bellone’s efforts to make Suffolk County more bikeable.”

Three Huntington seniors capture postseason honors

Three Huntington baseball players have claimed All-League honors following a season that saw the Blue Devils experience many ups and downs.

Matt DeMeo, Michael Harris and Steven Napurano were all recognized for their fine play. Harris, Napurano and Brian Donnelly served as captains of the 18-player team, which was coached by Billy Harris and James Priest.

The Blue Devils compiled a 4-16 mark and finished sixth in the league standings. It’s the best record for a Huntington varsity baseball team in three seasons.

“We would have been better without injuries,” Billy Harris said.

Highlights of the 2017 campaign included toppling Long Island champion West Islip on its home field in the first game of the season, 4-1, and rallying from a 9-1 fourth inning deficit to nip Centereach, 10-9.

“We were looking forward to a good season,” Harris said. “We were very hopeful with the talent we had, but kind of got derailed with bad weather and costly injuries. We could have beaten any team in the league if we were healthy.”

DeMeo, a senior pitcher and shortstop, led all batters with a .306 average. He had 19 hits, including five doubles and two home runs. He scored 14 runs and had an on base percentage of .358. He also led all pitchers with 29 strikeouts.

Michael Harris, a senior center fielder, was second on the team with a .304 batting average. He tallied 17 hits, including two doubles and scored 14 runs. He notched a .371 on base percentage and a team best .979 fielding percentage.

Napurano, a senior pitcher and outfielder, batted .273 with 15 hits, including three doubles. He drew 13 walks and had a .933 fielding percentage.

Despite Huntington’s losing record, Harris was upbeat about the season.

“Matt DeMeo was a great player offensively and a top pitcher,” the coach said. “Michael

Harris was second on the team in hitting and led us defensively. Steven Napurano was also a clutch hitter and played great defense.”

Trio tagged for lacrosse accolades

A trio of Huntington boys lacrosse players capped off their careers with postseason honors.

Garrett Moya and Mark Rafuse were both named to the All-County team and Matt Gelb garnered All-Division recognition. The student-athletes were all multi-sport athletes for the Blue Devils over the past four years.

Moya is headed to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Rafuse will be attending Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Gelb is moving on to Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.

The three top players along with Austin Reda, Jared Leake, Ryan Stieve and James Shea served as captains of last spring’s team.

The 31-player squad was coached by Kevin Travis, Julian Watts and Eric Triolo.

The Blue Devils compiled a 5-9 mark in league play and went 6-10 overall. Huntington lost one-goal games to Connetquot (15-14), Sachem North (13-12) and Commack (10-9).

Hanner, has coached at the high school for more than 15 years, was nominated by the NYSPHSAA and is now in the running for the Region 1 title of National Federation High School Coach of the Year Award.

The new achievement adds to Hanner’s successful career, as he was recognized in the fall as the 2016 New York State Large School Soccer Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Zeldin votes to punish New York

Representatives from villages within the Town of Brookhaven meet at Town Hall to discuss consolidating services.

Brookhaven leading the way in streamlining government The Town of Brookhaven is in the midst of a massive project with a stated goal of reducing property taxes for residents. The town, thanks to the hard work of Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Chief of Operations Matt Miner, is one of six finalists vying for a $20 million grant from New York State, which will be awarded to the municipality that displays the greatest aptitude for instituting innovative ways to make it less expensive to live in the particular jurisdiction.

Brookhaven is the lone town of the finalists, along with five counties from upstate.

According to Romaine, the 16 projects Brookhaven submitted as part of its application would yield a $3.20 to $1 return on investment, meaning the $20 million from the state would result in $66 million in savings for town taxpayers.

We commend Romaine, Miner, the rest of the town and leaders from the various villages and districts in Brookhaven who all came together to brainstorm ways to streamline government and reduce costs. We are optimistic about many of the town’s proposed projects that would be implemented if Brookhaven were selected and the potential impact it could have in making government more efficient and less expensive. It would seem common sense played a key role in the selection of the 16 projects, which is also a welcome sign to see from elected officials.

Some of the proposed projects include a town tax collector and tax assessor, relieving the burden for each from the town’s incorporated villages; a centralized, regional salt facility for snow removal; as well as several technological improvements and shared contracts for various services, which are provided at a lower cost for the town than what it would cost a village to contract out, like plumbing work.

Another component of applying for the grant was that Brookhaven established a Council of Governments, which will feature quarterly meetings of leaders from the town, villages and fire, school, sewer, erosion and library districts.

We think an open line of communication between the leaders from various levels of government across the town can only be an overwhelming positive for the people who live here. We wish Brookhaven good luck in its competition and hope other neighboring towns take the lead from them in finding innovative ways to reduce the cost of living across Long Island.

On June 29 Rep. Lee Zeldin voted for H.R. 3003, a bill that if it becomes law would severely handicap police anti-terrorism programs in New York City.

Based on the false premise that undocumented immigrants pose a threat to public safety, this bill threatens and punishes cities and states that fail to do the bidding of the federal government in rounding up immigrants.

Studies by both the left-leaning group The Sentencing Project and the right-leaning group the Cato Institute arrive at the same conclusion: Immigrants, including undocumented immigrants, “are less likely to be incarcerated than natives relative to their shares of the population.”

H.R. 3003 will cripple the “community trust” policing policies of over 600 states and localities that allow immigrant victims and witnesses to report offenses such as gang or domestic violence to local authorities without fear of immigration consequences. That’s why this bill was opposed by the National Fraternal Order of

Police, the Major County Sheriffs of America, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Association of Counties.

To punish localities that do not comply by eliminating community trust policing, H.R. 3003 takes away Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security grants available to such localities both to fight crime and to fight terrorism. That’s the reason Rep. Peter King, Republican from Long Island, voted “No” on this bill, unlike Rep. Zeldin. In a press statement King declared the bill “disembowels the anti-terror apparatus in the world’s top terror target [New York City].” He further stated that the bill takes things “to a dangerous extreme by making New York City ineligible for hundreds of millions of dollars every year that go toward thwarting terror attacks. These dollars have no connection to immigration whatsoever, except for the fact that the NYPD hunts down terror threats and also sometimes arrests illegal aliens.”

As for the constitutionality

of this bill, it violates both the Fourth and the Tenth Amendments. Don’t take my word for it. The Cato Institute states that H.R. 3003 “removes the authority of state or local police departments or state or local legislatures to determine how their law enforcement resources are used.

This violates a basic principle of federalism, which many conservatives have long championed, that the federal government should leave states to experiment with their own policies.” It questioned “whether Republican members of Congress would still support this legislation if they could imagine Democrats applying this same principle to federal gun laws in the future.”

By voting for this extreme, unconstitutional, and dangerous bill, Rep. Zeldin does harm to all residents of the New York metropolitan area by enabling the de-funding of vital anti-terrorism and anti-crime programs.

Praying the LGBT+ community repents Now that you’ve written your politically correct editorial championing the rights — actually preferential treatment — of the “LGBT+” (will the pluses ever end?) community in your July 6 editorial “Love is love,” how about printing one for civility, tolerance, protection, support and religious liberty for the most persecuted community worldwide, including in America? Those who love Jesus and believe the Bible is God’s Word, and accept what both teach, including about God’s plan for

sex (His invention), corresponds to the self-preserving policy of most world civilizations, especially Western civilization, and the self-evident truth through all of American history until five in black robes recently jettisoned our nation’s foundation for liberty, i.e., “the laws of nature and nature’s God” (see the Declaration of Independence).

I do not commend U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) or anyone else for walking in the New York City Pride March, but in Christian love and concern (not hate), I

commend to them God’s Word in Isaiah 3:9 (NIV): “The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them!

They have brought disaster upon themselves.”

I pray that all of us will avail ourselves of the mercy God offers to all mankind in Christ to all who repent and believe before the Day of Judgment.

An open letter to SBU dean Sacha Kopp I am Naomi Solo, and my husband Richard, joined the Stony Brook University faculty in 1962.

He died just over a year ago.

I have continued my association with the university by being an ardent fan of its sports, cultural and academic programs.

It is with great chagrin that I see you have felt it necessary to do away with a critical part of our university at a time when it is needed most with the suspension

of a few programs. In difficult times, it is the voice of contemporary theater that speaks clearly and loudly to an audience who needs to hear voices of reason.

How very much I remember the political theater of the 1960s and ’70s at Stony Brook when we had plays that spoke to the issues and fostered great discussion. It is that time again and to silence this voice is a serious fault.

We have come to a time when

the almighty dollar is what we think about and the university has already made some very negative moves. To abandon critical intellectual thought at this time is a grave error. I urge you to reconsider such a negative move and think more seriously about academic thought rather than just money.

hat would happen if it rained on our intransigent politicians in Washington?

Well, for starters, the Democrats would all vote “no.” They’re voting “no” on everything anyway, so the rain probably wouldn’t affect them.

While some Republicans like Sen. John McCain would immediately acknowledge the rain, others would call it a nonstory. When the GOP couldn’t

Sure, Obama knew about rain in Washington when he was president, but he didn’t enact a single policy or procedure that could have prevented the wet stuff from ruining barbecues and costing people money. He ignored an important proposal many years ago to put a retractable dome over Washington that would have created jobs and saved people from getting wet.

The New York Times would blame President Trump, his administration, his family and the Russians, especially President Putin, because all are at fault for everything. They probably planned during their meetings last year to distract everyone from their collusion to cause it to rain just when everyone was getting ready for a picnic. The Times would find some damning email in which someone joked about the rain, or in which the word “rain” might have been a code word, and would remind everyone that rain is synonymous with “pain,” which the paper is feeling from this new administration.

Competing polls would begin as soon as the first drops fell. One poll, which the current administration and Republicans would ignore and discredit, would suggest that even Trump voters are frustrated by the rain and feel that Trump promised them it would never rain again, except at night when they were sleeping. They would be upset that the billionaire Man of the People didn’t protect them when they wanted to attend their daughter’s softball game or when they wanted to go on a company picnic to a site that had previously been off-limits during the Obama administration because it was a protected area where young birds and fish were breeding.

At the same time, another poll that the Democrats would ignore would indicate that Trump voters were thrilled that they didn’t have to spend money watering lawns that, thanks to the new and limited Environmental Protection Agency, they could spray with a wide range of cheaper, job-creating pesticides that may or may not harm some people and a few turtles. This poll would suggest

that these voters would be thrilled if the rain continued strategically through 2020, when they would be even happier to vote again for Trump.

Trump might tweet about how sad the rain was for Democrats and might suggest that it would be raining even harder if Hillary Clinton was president. Trump might engage in a twitter war with Chelsea Clinton or Rosie O’Donnell.

CNN would cover the twitter war extensively and would then claim that the entire discussion was a distraction from the real issues, which they would cover in a small box in the corner of their webpage.

Stocks would continue to rise as investors bet that people would need to spend more money on umbrellas in the short term, and on new food for other picnics some time in the near future when the rain stopped.

When the skies cleared, everyone would take credit before heading to the beach, unless they lived in New Jersey and were thwarted by an unpopular governor.

Speaking of turns, many of you probably watched the TURN series on AMC, about the Setauket spies, whose fourth and final year is showing on cable television presently. Though based on the scent of real events, those episodes are largely fiction, although they are nonetheless riveting. Our movie, made authentic through the attention and help of local historical societies, is as factual as the history that has come down to us through more than two centuries.

Which is to say, this is the real story and no less intense for being accurate.

This film can, and we trust, will be shown to children in the schools as part of the state mandate for teaching local history.

But its making would not have been possible without the help of our North Shore “village.” So many organizations, businesses and individuals teamed up to bring our local history to life.

Let me explain. There were three

parts to our filming, kind of like a trifecta. First we needed the script, which was researched and written largely by TBR’s Director of Media Productions Michael Tessler and Emerson College junior Benjamin Dunaief, with help from Port Jeff alum and Brooklyn College student Dominick Famularo. Part of that first win was to bring the script to life, for which we needed a competent crew behind the camera. These dozen hard workers were brought in by my grandson Benji, who knew their work from previous film shoots. We also needed high level equipment, some of which came with the crew and the rest we rented.

The second part was to secure the historic locations, also the actors in front of the camera. Here is where the “village” came into play. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, SPLIA (Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities), Three Village Historical Society, Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society, Three Village Community Trust, LISEC boat builders and Benner’s Farm provided the settings and encouragement.

Then casting calls along with connections brought us the talented actors, who included among many others, Jeff Sanzel, Dave Morrissey Jr. (from New York City, soon to be an equity member), Jonathan Rabeno, David Gianopoulos (who was Agent Johnson in the 1997 movie “Air Force One”) and Hans Paul Hendrickson, who played Hale.

The third win was the unending assistance and support from individuals like the inexhaustible John Worrell, Tim Glynn, Margo Arceri, Fred Bryant, Charlie Lefkowitz, Michael Ardolino, Peter Moloney, Andy Pollen, the Connell family, Virginia Cash, the many battle re-enactors who traveled from near and far, and the contributions of Stony Brook University. Then there are the many local restaurants who helped us feed everybody on set like Setauket Gourmet deli, Setauket Village Diner, Via Pizza, Pasta Pasta and Eastern Pavilion.

There are many more to thank and we will do so in a more formal way, but this is just a spontaneous outburst of gratitude to all those who, with willing hands across the community, make our lives so rich.
