Learn to be tobacco free

Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken encourages residents who use tobacco to seek help in attempting to break their addiction by registering for Suffolk County’s Learn to Be Tobacco Free program. The program, which is free to Suffolk County residents, offers assistance with planning, support and counseling. The program also provides over-the-counter medications for a fee to participants who are medically eligible.

County announces launch of Reclaim Our Water contest

BY DESIRÉE KEEGAN DESIREE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) announced the launch of the Reclaim Our Water film contest for public service announcements and short films. The contest, which coincides with National Maritime Day, is open to all New York state residents of any age and is designed to raise awareness of water quality issues and the impact of nitrogen pollution.

“Public education is a critical component to ensuring that residents understand just how important our efforts are in protecting our water quality on Long Island,” Bellone said. “This contest is a terrific opportunity for anyone to develop their own creative and informative films to expose the significance on this environmental issue.”

The contest, which was first launched in 2014, is presented by the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning with the collaboration of the Suffolk County Film Commission in support of Bellone’s initiative.

The Reclaim Our Water initiative seeks to reduce nitrogen pollution from cesspools and septic systems, which contributes to beach closures, restrictions on harvesting of shellfish, harmful algae blooms and fish kills in Suffolk County waterways, through the connection of communities to sewer systems and the installation of advanced on-site wastewater treatment systems.

Filmmakers will be judged on creativity

and originality, quality, technical accuracy and content of their public service announcements or short films, that can range from 15 seconds to one-minute long.

Submissions for the contest must be posted by Monday, Aug. 20. Winners will be chosen by Friday, Aug. 31, and announced Monday, Sept. 3. Screening of the winning films will take place at the Long Island Maritime Museum at 86 West Ave., West Sayville Saturday, Sept. 15. The screening of the winning films coincides with the start of National SepticSmart Week, which is held by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from Sept. 17-21 and is designed to educate homeowners, local officials and communities on the proper care and maintenance of their septic systems.

Protesters rally against Trump’s immigration policies

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Hundreds of Huntington area residents took a clear stand against President Donald Trump’s (R) immigration policies at the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Route 110 June 30.

Standing two to three people deep on all four sides of the intersection, protesters held signs with messages of “Families belong together,” “No human is illegal” and homemade signs calling for “Reunite families.” The chant of “Love not hate makes America great” was taken up as a refrain. Each honk from a passing car or truck providing the crowd of more than 600 — an unofficial estimate — with a new wave of energy to combat the sweltering heat.

At a podium set up at the northwest corner of the intersection, speakers from a coalition of more than 50 organizations — including Long Island Inclusive Communities Against Hate, New York Chapter 2 of The American Academy of Pediatrics, Latinos Unidos de Long Island, Sepa Mujer and many others — took turns speaking to those gathered on a bullhorn.

“We hope our rally displays the love and compassion we hope that America can represent as well as the hopeful and powerful nature of our democracy,” said Pilar Moya,

founder of Latinos Unidos de Long Island, a nonprofit organization that helps provide support and a community for Latino families.

“Our message to the families separated at the border is, ‘You matter, and our voices are our extensions of yours.’”

More than 2,300 immigrant parents and their children were separated after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions enacted a zero-tolerance policy for those who crossed the border illegally in mid-April.

After public outcry, Trump signed an executive order June 20 designed to end the family separations. The policy has been both denounced by members of the Trump administration as a holdover Obama-era procedure and publicly cited as a new strategy intentionally instituted to deter asylum seekers from trying to come to America.

“Our mission is to protect the health and well-being of all children, regardless of their immigration status,” said Dr. Steve Goldstein, pediatrician and president of New York Chapter 2 of The American Academy of Pediatrics. “We want to see immediate reunification of those children already taken from their parents. We oppose housing families and children in detention centers and prefer community settings for them and we want to see timely determinations of applications

for asylum.”

Despite Trump’s executive order, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told the U.S. Senate Finance Committee last week that there were still 2,047 children in federal custody as of the last week of June.

COUNTY Hahn looking to reduce straw use in Suffolk

A Suffolk County legislator asked residents to go strawless this summer, along with local participating restaurants pledging to keep from giving out plastic straws. Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and members of the Suffolk County Plastic Reduction Task Force, have launched a countywide plan to reduce single-use straws, named Strawless Suffolk.

The goal is to have 100 seaside restaurants in Bellport, Greenport, Huntington, Northport, Patchogue and Port Jefferson Village take a pledge to stop using plastic straws by Labor Day, according to Hahn.

The initiative’s kickoff announcement was held July 2 at The Purple Elephant in Northport. It is one of 31 restaurants and two schools that have already taken the pledge.

The restaurants that pledge will be provided with a blue turtle decal that states “Strawless Summer 2018 Participant.” “If you see the sticker, go back to those restaurants because they are doing the right thing,” Hahn said.

To be eligible, restaurants can participate in three ways: Stop using straws completely, provide biodegradable straws made with paper or bamboo upon request or provide reusable ones made of stainless steel or glass.

“The task force was created in order to reduce the single-use plastics,” said Kaitlin Willig, Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and vice chair of Suffolk County Plastic Reduction Task Force. “I think we are trying to go about it

We can get rid of that throw away culture that we have and move toward reusing, rather than just trying to recycle. We are trying to go through education and make smarter choices.”

Hahn said she’s been participating in beach cleanups for a long time and is always struck with how many straws she comes across.

“We’d go to a restaurant and it would make me so angry when they just put [a straw] in your drink without even saying anything,” Hahn said. “I mean it’s really just a waste. I can’t even say no at this point because it’s too

late. If they put it down and it’s wrapped, I’ll just give it back.”

Hahn added that leaving the unused wrapped straw on the table is not enough.

She worked in a restaurant and said it is common an unopened straw would be thrown out anyway. She directed those interested in getting involved to take their own pledge with the Skip the Straw campaign, a similar initiative tailored to get individuals involved

by Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting ocean health.

“I think individuals should think about trying to do it,” Hahn said. “You know first

and foremost you can be responsible for what you do as an individual and then you can also tell the restaurants you frequent. You can tell them they don’t need to, and they’ll save money if they don’t automatically give out straws. If they make it by request, they can save a lot and then if they do choose to provide some upon request, make it paper.”

Nearly 90 percent of all marine debris is made of plastic, including plastic straws.

Former president, Patterson create a stir in Huntington The streets of downtown Huntington were buzzing the morning of June 28 as readers and fans alike waited patiently for a chance to meet former President Bill Clinton (D) and author James Patterson.

Security was tight at Book Revue, an independently owned bookstore on New York Avenue, and excitement was in the air. A long line stretched around the corner to Main Street before taking a turn onto Wall Street as patrons began lining up as early as 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. event.

“I’m a big supporter of his,” said Chris Jones, who was elated to meet Clinton. “It’s not every day you get the opportunity to meet a U.S. president.”

Clinton and Patterson were signing copies of their joint novel, “The President is Missing,” which was released June 4. The thriller takes place in contemporary America, wherein the president goes missing only to become a suspect in a looming attack.

“As the novel opens, a threat looms,” Patterson wrote in the description of the plot posted on his website. “Enemies are planning an attack of unprecedented scale on America.

Uncertainty and fear grip Washington. There are whispers of cyberterror and espionage and a traitor in the cabinet. The president himself becomes a suspect, and then goes missing.”

The book signing attracted a wide variety of people. Among the younger audience in attendance was Ryan McInnes, who was standing in line with his father.

Clinton is “inspirational to young people in this country,” McInnes said.

The president and Patterson were not available for comment at the event, but those who purchased tickets and waited patiently had the opportunity to meet the coauthors and have the novel signed.

This was Clinton’s second time appearing at Book Revue, which was founded in 1977 and is now one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States. The store has hosted many notable figures in the past including Hoda Kotb, Anderson Cooper and Bill Nye, among others.

Book Revue co-owner Richard Klein was appreciative of Clinton’s cooperation.

“He is very personable, and we were happy to have him,” Klein said. “The event went very smoothly and we were happy to serve our customers and see everyone having a good time.”

Book Revue has several copies of “The President is Missing” that were signed by Patterson and made available for purchase after the event. The store is located at 313 New York Ave. in Huntington.

New York is taking another step toward ridding our community and our homes of dangerous drugs.

The state Assembly passed the Drug Take Back Act June 20 following the Senate’s passage of the bill the night before, which will establish a statewide program to provide free, safe pharmaceutical disposal for unused or expired medications. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, rather than the taxpayers, will foo the entire bill for implementing the program. Chain pharmacies will be required to provide free drug take-back sites, while other authorized collectors, like independent pharmacies and local law enforcement, will have the option to participate.

“This landmark law makes New York a national leader in addressing the opioid crisis and protecting our waters from pharmaceutical pollution,” said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, applauding state Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D-Middletown). “[They]have stood up for clean water, public health and New York taxpayers over the special interests of the multibillion dollar pharmaceutical industry. This drug take-back legislation is the best in the nation and we believe it will be adopted by other states. The cost to the pharmaceutical industry will be negligible — communities that have passed similar laws estimated a cost of just a couple pennies per prescription.”

This legislation ensures all New Yorkers will have convenient access to safe drug disposal options. Making safe disposal options accessible to the public will reduce what officials described as the harmful and antiquated practice of flushing unwanted drugs. Drugs that are flushed are polluting waters from the Great Lakes to Long Island Sound, threatening aquatic life, water quality and drinking water.

“A lack of options to safely dispose of unused drugs is contributing to the national drug abuse epidemic that is now the leading cause of injury and death in the U.S., ahead of car accidents,” said Andrew Radin, chair of the New York Product Stewardship Council and recycling director for Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency.

“Deaths from drug overdoses and chronic drug abuse in New York state have increased 71 percent between 2010 and 2015.”

More than 2,000 people in New York die annually from opioid overdose, and 70 percent of people that abuse prescription drugs get them from friends and family, according to the Citizens Campaign for the Environment.

“The Drug Take Back Act will save lives by stopping prescription drug abuse at its source,” Radin said.

A coalition of environmental, public health and product stewardship organizations praised Gov. Tips and tricks when handling ticks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the number of illnesses related to ticks, mosquitos and fleas have tripled from 2004 to 2016, with 69,313 diseases reported from ticks in New York state in that time. In 2013, the CDC estimated that nationally there were 300,000 cases of Lyme disease annually, which is carried by deer tick.

Brosdal’s daughter Erika suffered through the pains of Lyme disease when she was 13 years old. As a father, watching his daughter lay in pain on the couch was heartbreaking.

“She couldn’t breathe,” Brosdal said. “It affected her so terribly – she was an A-grade student until that happened, and then she had to read everything twice. I give her a lot of credit — she’s 44 now and has two master’s degrees and she’s a high school psychologist.”

Brosdal said the quails have an important job to do and “can do a lot of good.”

Powers said multiple schools participate in his program and will release the quails in parks all over Long Island. If any school or group is interested in raising quails, Powers can be contacted through www.yc2n.com.

According to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, over 900 calls were received from people seeking advice from its tick helpline in 2017.

If a tick is found on your body, there are ways to safely remove it: • Tweezers are the best tool and should be placed as close to the skin as possible — grabbing the tick’s head.

• Pull upward with a slow and steady motion and try to avoid breaking the tick in half. If the head snaps off, know disease transmission is not possible without the entire body.

• Disinfect the bit area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water and contact a physician. Consider placing the tick in a baggie or pill vial.

• Pay attention to your health in the weeks following.

There are also ways to reduce your exposure, like checking for ticks daily, especially under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees or between legs and on the hairline and scalp.

Remove and dry clothing on high heat as soon as possible to kill ticks. They can’t be drowned by washing. You can create a tick-safe yard by mowing frequently and keeping leaves raked. Also be sure to treat dogs and cats.

One tick can carry multiple pathogens.

Deer ticks or blacklegged ones have no white markings, are brown or black in color and are very, very small. Both nymph and adult stages can transmit diseases like Lyme and babesiosis.

ENVIRONMENT Legislature fights to preserve county waters ELANA GLOWATZ

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With mounting pressure to preserve the sanctity of Long Island’s coastal waters, Suffolk County is teaming up with specialists at Stony Brook University to educate the public on marine pollution.

“Folks on Long Island are more involved with [marine pollution] than other parts of the country because they are spending time around the sound and beaches,” said Katherine Aubrecht, the faculty director for coastal environmental studies at Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. “It’s such a bigger part of people’s lives, and there is a more receptive audience here to be thinking about this.”

The county Legislature unanimously passed a resolution June 5 to direct the Division of Planning & Environment in the Department of Economic Development and Planning to collaborate with SoMAS to establish a marine debris pollution awareness program.

Though it is just in its preliminary stages, according Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) who sponsored the resolution, she said the awareness program would be used to educate school-aged children and the general public on the dangers of garbage pollution to the marine ecosystem.

“We want the education to be generalized,

Anker said the two goals for the upcoming program are to educate the public on how we are affecting and degrading our oceans, and to teach people what they could do about it, including the need for beach cleanups and how to properly recycle plastics.

Aubrecht said that there’s three unpaid interns from the Stony Brook University’s environmental humanities program charged with compiling data on ocean pollution, and looking into what other marine debris education efforts exist on Long Island. Data is also being collected on demographics the program wishes to target with the campaign.

“It is important to teach young children about the impact they are having on their community and how they can become environmentally conscientious,” she said.

“Some examples could include teaching students about the impact they might have, even just picking up a few pieces of trash or about how all pollutants eventually make their way into marine environments.”

Anker said she expects the program to have a full formal presentation ready by the end of next year. She also expects by next Earth Day, the debris awareness program will have presentations to show what citizens can do to help clean up the local marine environment.

Microplastics ending up in local waters are among the most pressing issues on Long Island.

Microplastics are plastics that have broken

down due to erosion into pieces smaller than 5 millimeters — they end up being swallowed by sea life endangering the health of the animal and, if the issue is untreated, those plastics can easily end up on the dinner table.

At the county Legislature’s April 19 Health Committee meeting Rebecca Grella, a Brentwood High School research scientist and teacher, said she had surveyed Flax Pond Marine Laboratory in Old Field in October 2017 and that in 1 square meter of shoreline, found 17 grams of microplastics. She said there were approximated 400 pounds of plastic in 1 mile of shoreline in the pond.

Aubrecht said that when these plastics enter a marine environment they can also cause organic pollutants — which are often too disbursed and not dangerous — to merge onto these plastics, but have a larger effect on marine wildlife. Ocean debris also cause animal entanglement, like a small fish or turtle getting caught in a plastic ring that holds a six-pack of cans. These entangled creatures often suffer major injuries or die if they can’t free themselves.

Though all these problems may seem daunting, Fallon said that education is the starting line in a race that will hopefully end with the elimination of marine pollutants.

“A community that is made aware of the impact that they are having on their environment will hopefully be more likely to avoid harmful actions,” Fallon said.

Students from Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields school district who participated in the nationwide Science Olympiad received high scores in their competing categories. This contest is an annual science trivia competition that middle schools participate in

As a group, the participating sixth-grade students placed third overall nationally. Student Matthew Prieto placed first overall individually in the nation, and Guantian Tao placed first in the category of earth science. Tied for second place

Elwood Middle School held a special ceremony for eighth-graders moving on to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School June 20. Principal Christina Sapienza, who is wrapping up her first year of service as principal, initiated this new tradition that will continue on for years to come.

Students entered the middle school auditorium to upbeat music as family members, teachers, administrators and board members looked on, ready to celebrate the students in this special time. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the select chorus, led

by Laura Fisher, performed a beautiful rendition of “God Bless America.”

Sapienza welcomed all those in attendance and thanked the district for a wonderful first year as principal.

“Since day one, I’ve felt so embraced by this community, and from the bottom of my heart I thank all of you,” Sapienza said. “And to my first eighth-grade class — each and every one of you is so special and unique, especially in the way you take care of one another. Never stop. And,” she added, “I’m so lucky to have felt taken care of by you all, as well.”

In addition, she encouraged them to take chances in every opportunity possible in the future, and remarked that even though the EMS

community will miss them, they’re beyond excited to see what chances each student will choose to take.

Superintendent Kenneth Bossert, board of education President Julia Fried and Assistant Principal Dawn Valle addressed the graduating class.

Student Council President Alexandra Haddad also took a moment to congratulate her classmates and to encourage them to take advantage of whatever opportunities present themselves in the future.

“As we leave this place, we’ll continue to learn and grow,” she said, “and it’s up to us to choose the best direction to steer our lives in.”

Shining in solar design Fourth-grade students from Northport-East Northport’s Investigate program recently competed in and were named winners in multiple categories at the Cradle of Aviation’s Junior Solar Spring Competition. These students are a part of the districtwide program that works on enforcing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills in those who show an aptitude for them.

The Junior Solar Sprint is a model car competition that incorporates the use of renewable energy into the design of the cars. Students build and design a solar car and then compete against other teams in a series of time trials. Cars are also judged on design, creativity and ingenuity.

In addition to working with Investigate facilitators Fran Bertos and Brianne Furstein and technol-

ogy teacher and department adviser George Searing, Northport High School Technology Honor Society students served as mentors.

During the competition, students were judged on their car’s time, as well as their engineer ing notebooks, in which they kept detailed notes and drawings of the entire engineering and design process.

“The examples of hard work and enthusiasm that the mentors provided was invaluable,” said David Storch, chairperson of Science & Technology Education,“and we look forward to continuing to provide our young engineers the opportunity to learn from experienced students, and to gain experience of their own.”

Lina Tornese, an eighth-grader at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, was recently named a recipient of the Annual Friedlander Upstander Award. Lina, pictured at right, was one of three Suffolk County recipients.

This award, sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center and the Claire Friedlander Family Foundation, and in partnership with both the Suffolk and Nassau counties police departments, awards students who have shown themselves to “Upstanders” against any type of intolerance. Each student selected is given a $2,500 educational scholarship. Educators nominate their students and are required to attest to the student’s character and how they stand up for others.

Kennedy seat a chance for compromise Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died Feb. 13, 2016. With the presidential election 269 days away, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and his caucus set a new precedent, refusing to hold confirmation hearings or a vote on then-President Barack Obama’s (D) nominee Merrick Garland because they believed the American people were mere months away from truly having a chance to weigh in on the decision.

This week Justice Anthony Kennedy, viewed by many as the centerright fulcrum of an otherwise politically balanced bench, announced he would retire. As a result, President Donald Trump (R), with two- to six-and-a-half more years left in the White House, will get his second bite at the Supreme Court apple, having already appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch last year.

If we are to set aside the hypocrisy of Senate Republicans pledging to plow forward with the nomination and confirmation process before the midterms, just 124 days from now, we don’t think it’s too much to ask for them to consider a few things as they begin the process.

First, can our current political climate handle the nomination and appointment of a partisan justice bent on say, being the deciding vote in overturning Roe v. Wade? Yes, it would score political points with the president’s Republican base and enflame liberals even more than they already are, which seems to be one of the few pillars guiding the right.

Do Republicans in Congress truly believe they don’t have a role to play in restoring some shred of compromise and unity in our politics? Would nominating a hard-line pro-life justice this close to what was already likely to be possibly as heated a campaign season our country has ever seen (outside of 2016, of course) really do anything to advance our country’s discourse to a better place than we’re in now?

Further, beyond Roe v. Wade, are Republicans comfortable with the current discourse regarding the free press and the First Amendment? Will Trump be vetting his nominee about their stance on critical issues pertaining to his own legal situation, which includes probes into his personal attorney’s alleged pay-for-play White House access business structure and a special counsel investigation into Trump’s alleged campaign ties to the Russian government and its meddling in our election? Everyone involved is innocent until proven guilty, but if the president intends to impose a litmus test on his nominee for a question like, “Can the president of the United States legally pardon himself?” that should be a red flag to anyone who claims to believe in the rule of law.

We don’t feel it’s too much to ask for Republicans to consider a nominee that could serve as a unifier in as desperate a time as any for a little compromise, even assuming they’ve made up their mind on tearing up the McConnell Rule before the proverbial ink from 2016 is even dry. Both sides like to stake claims to a mythical moral high ground. Republicans, as they cheerlead things like tearing up the Affordable Care Act and labeling the free press as the enemy of the American people, could do more to stake an actual claim to that high ground than they have since Trump burst onto the scene with a nominee in the form of an olive branch.

Public transportation is a wise investment

July, 2018 marks the 54th anniversary of federal government support for public transportation.

The success of public transportation can be traced back to one of the greatest accomplishments of President Lyndon Johnson (D) which continues benefiting many Americans today. On July 9, 1964, he signed the Urban Mass Transportation Act into law. Subsequently, this has resulted in the investment over time of several hundred billion dollars into public transportation.

Millions of Americans today on a daily basis utilize various public transportation alternatives.

They include local and express bus, ferry, jitney, light rail, subway and commuter rail services. All of these systems use less fuel and move far more people than conventional single occupancy vehicles. Most of these systems are funded with your tax dollars thanks to Johnson.

Depending upon where you live, consider the public transportation alternative. Try riding a local or express bus, commuter van, ferry, light rail, commuter rail or subway.

Fortunately, we have the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and its various operating agencies, including NYC Transit subway and bus, Long Island Rail Road, MetroNorth Railroad, Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority and MTA Bus, Suffolk County Transit and our own local Town of Huntington Area Rapid Transit, with Long Beach Bus. There is also New Jersey Transit, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (known as PATH), Nassau Inter County Express (NICE) bus and NYC Department of Transportation Staten Island Ferry.

Using MTA MetroCards provides free transfers between the subway and bus. This has eliminated the old two-fare zones making public transportation an even better bargain. Purchasing a monthly LIRR or MTA subway/bus pass reduces the cost per ride and provides virtually unlimited trips.

Elected officials and government employees can turn in their taxpayers funded vehicles and join the rest of us by using public transportation to get around town.

In many cases, employers can

offer transit checks which help subsidize a portion of the costs.

Utilize this and reap the benefits.

It supports a cleaner environment.

Many employers now allow employees to telecommute and work from home. Others use alternativework schedules which afford staff the ability to avoid rush-hour gridlock. This saves travel time and can improve mileage per gallon.

Join a car or van pool to share the costs of commuting.

The ability to travel from home to workplace, school, shopping, entertainment, medical, library, etc., is a factor when moving to a new neighborhood. Economically successful communities are not 100 percent dependent on automobiles as the sole means of mobility.

Seniors, students, low- and middleincome people need these transportation alternatives. Investment in public transportation today contributes to economic growth, employment and a stronger economy.

Dollar for dollar, it is one of the best investments we can make.

Liberalism is stripping away freedom Moral laws no longer required. Standards need not apply, numbing the freedom of conscience. Absolutes are now antiquated. A square peg is adaptable to a round hole. False.

This has become the gospel of mass liberals. As cancer denies viability in life so does the perversion of liberalism. Truth is cure in stopping this despotic

direction. It is a destroyer of freedom that has denied viable freedom to many nations. Liberalism is a growing society that gradually devours its people in false freedom. A domination that shall in time control all freedom of enterprise and change the structure of social society from the concepts that created The Greatest Generation. Be aware,

America, that we are slowly being denied our freedom daily referred to as subjected control.

Freedom is not free. It is earned.

Example: the efforts of our Founding Fathers.

Bravo TBR for an enchanting night On June 12, I was fortunate enough to attend a wonderful event hosted by TBR News Media, the first annual Cooks, Books, & Corks fundraiser. Bravo, bravo ... what an enchanting evening.

The proceeds raised went to underwrite a summer internship for an inspiring journalist from Stony Brook University’s School

of Journalism.

The sponsorship by Michael Ardolino, The Bates House and Simple Party Designs was top notch. The many local restaurants, authors and vineyard combined to make a truly unique and wonderful experience. It was great to see so many of our neighbors supporting this event.

I look forward with much anticipation to what will be an annual event and will recommend it to everyone.

Celebrating all of America on Independence Day

F

irst of all, we’re going to need a big cake. No, I know you think most cakes are big and that most people’s eyes are bigger than their stomachs, but this one is going to have to be huge.

You see, we’re about to celebrate an important birthday. Next week, it’s the 242nd birthday of the country, so we’ll need a place to put all the candles.

So, what do we get for the country that has everything?

Well, for starters, it depends on what you imagine

By Daniel Dunaief represents the country. Is it the Statue of Liberty? The bald eagle? A baseball game? Mount Rushmore? The Grand Canyon?

D. None of the above

Seriously, this is one huge country and we haven’t even discussed the last two states to join the union.

Alaska is a gem, with vistas stretching as far as the eye can see, as shimmering spawning salmon make streams and rivers glow orange, while bears nibble here and there as cars and buses pass them along the sides of the highways.

Hawaii reminded everyone this year that it’s a volcanic archipelago. It’s a magnificent and lush combination of majestic mountains, bamboo forests and striking cliffs.

So, what would this great country of ours want for its birthday?

Well, maybe it would want us, even for a day, to all get along. We are all Americans, we have all heard the stories about the forefathers who fought for this country, who defied the British, and who wanted what was best for them and, all these years later, us.

Maybe it would want us to tidy up.

After all, who doesn’t want to look

good on their birthday, right? We could clean up our yards, clean up our neighbor’s yard, remove trash from the area around the school, a place so many enthusiastic children recently abandoned for the start of the summer.

Maybe we should take a moment to think about how we are helping ourselves, or others, reach the American Dream. We all want life to be better, but maybe we can encourage others to strive for, and reach, a dream that anyone from anywhere could reach greatness. We are not like Europeans of past centuries, who limited opportunities for success by class, gender or ancestry.

The home of the free and the land of the brave is all about allowing anyone from any walk of life to reach their potential and, more importantly, to decide their potential.

America is about celebrating youth. We are a young country, filled with hope for the future, unbridled optimism and joy.

Regardless of what politicians in Washington say, we are also a country that likes to laugh, even at ourselves.

We have a great sense of humor. Need a laugh? Watch “Bridesmaids” or “Groundhog Day” — or if in the mood for something older, “Animal House.”

We pull apart and then we come together. We speak with different accents, depending on where we come from or what part of the world our ancestors originally inhabited.

When we come together, we are unstoppable, finding our best selves from the roles we play in companies, on teams, or in close-knit families that stand ready, willing and able to support each other through any challenge.

Sure, we can hang the flag, eat a hot dog, have a barbecue and sing a few American songs to celebrate our country.

But, hey, maybe we can also look for the best in each other and in ourselves as we again give hope to the notion that a rising tide of optimism, of cooperation, of compassion lifts all boats.

And by the time the movie was over, I believe there was an enriched sense of community among those in the room.

As much as we want to know where we came from, we also enjoy a sense of belonging to a community. One viewer from farther away came up to me at the end and said he wished for that pride in his city. That particularly pleased me because we as publishers of the hometown paper have always sought to strengthen those ties. Strong communities can be a powerful force for good. They also want to get the latest local news by reading the local papers, which is not so bad for us.

Making a film was a new experience.

My eldest grandson, Benji, the director of “One Life to Give,” aspires to be a professional filmmaker as his career progresses, and as we saw he has already acquired many filmmaking skills in college, where he is now a senior. He also brought to us for this venture a remarkable hardworking and talented crew of young professionals in front of and behind the camera. Thanks to our local connections, which included local historical societies and carefully preserved sites, we were able to put together an authentic venue for the

shoot. The weather was wondrously cooperative, and actors and historic re-enactors of considerable skill joined the team. Local restaurants, costume outfitters, dry cleaners, scenery designers, makeup and special effects people and SBU, among others, made in-kind contributions. Muskets and cannons were procured and brought to the filming site, often among hilarious circumstances. One rule became obvious: No day would go exactly as planned.

A number of generous local businesses helped us meet costs by agreeing to be sponsors, and for their help they received credits before and after the film. Their names will be seen near and far as a number of groups have asked to show the film.

My major contribution was offering my house for the 15 young people and their equipment throughout the shoot. I can tell you there was not a clear view of floor or rug during those 16 days. It was great fun with high excitement but on their next film, the shooting of which starts in two weeks’ time for release next year, they will definitely stay in a hotel.

House full for our hometown movie

unday was a magical night. After a full year of work, we offered you, our readers and viewers, the initial screening of “One Life to Give.”

Our first full-length film, the story is set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War more than 200 years ago, and is about Nathan Hale, Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington and the events leading up to the founding of the Culper Spy Ring.

The location for this screening was the 1,000seat Staller Center off Nicholls Road within Stony Brook University, and to my amazement and delight, we filled the

This full house by itself is a most gratifying testimony to your regard and to the pulling power of our newspapers

and digital media, especially competing as we were with graduation day at the local high school.

It’s also a lot more. In these chaotic and divided times, I believe we yearn to understand our common origin as a nation and the history that we share.

History after all is glue that holds us together and, to the surprise of many students who hate social studies in school, is also the series of fascinating stories about people, personalities and events that help define who we are today. And since our film is focused on local people and events, we share a pride of place. Our area has been dubbed the “cradle of history” because of its brutal occupation by the British, the activities of the spy ring and the military skirmishes during the war. Long Island, in fact, endured the longest occupation of any part of the colonies because its farms and forests, livestock and fish made up the unwilling breadbasket for the major British garrison in New York City.

So viewers came to see the history and the authentic local scenes and events, and the familiar faces of many residents as they served as extras on screen. Also some were simply curious.

Competing in the game of a lifetime Emerson Cabrera joins local seniors in Under Armour All-America lacrosse game

BY DESIRÉE KEEGAN DESIREE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Although North fell to South in a 10-9 overtime thriller during the Under Armour All-America lacrosse game in Maryland June 30, featuring the country’s best high school seniors, recent Mount Sinai graduate Meaghan Tyrrell was just proud to have been a part of it.

“Being chosen to be part of the Under Armour game is such a huge honor because it’s the top 44 players in the country being chosen, which makes for a great game,” she said. “It was quality, competitive lacrosse, which is good to have before heading into college.”

According to Ward Melville senior Shannon Berry, another player selected for the game, the teams arrived in Baltimore Thursday, June 28, and the girls spent the first evening at the Under Armour headquarters, where they received all of their gear. The teams practiced twice on Friday before taking the field Saturday morning.

“It was crazy to talk to some of those girls over the weekend and reflect on our time as young lacrosse players, and to see how far our journey’s as lacrosse players have gone,” the Princeton University-bound midfielder said. “All of my teammates were both incredible lacrosse players and great people. They were all extremely competitive, but also very friendly and kind.”

Tyrrell said working alongside former competition was part of what made the experience unique.

“It’s cool to get to know people that you’ve played against in school and travel lacrosse,” she said. “I think our team clicked practicing on both offense and defense.”

Tyrrell played with teammate Meaghan Scutaro, a defender headed to the University of Notre Dame, for the last time. She said it was the best way she could cap off her high school lacrosse career.

“I can’t think of any other way to say goodbye to high school lacrosse,” she said.

“The game itself was so fun.”

The Syracuse University-bound attack scored twice, her second tying the game at 9-9, which is something she’d consistently done for her Mustangs girls lacrosse team across her career.

“It was a great feeling to be able to help the team,” she said. “We had an opportunity to go into overtime and be able to try and win.”

Berry totaled four ground balls and five clears, taking one shot on goal.

“The level of competition was certainly

the highest I have played in so far in my career,” said Berry, who played at attack, midfield and defense during the game. “The entire experience was incredible. Under Armour and Corrigan Sports truly do an amazing job of honoring the senior athletes and giving them an unforgettable, once-in-alifetime experience.”

Ward Melville graduate Alex Mazzone was chosen to play in the boys game. The Georgetown University-bound defender was on the South team that toppled North 22-15.

“It was really awesome to have both a male and female to represent Ward Melville,” Berry said. “It was great knowing that both of us were there representing our community.”

Northport attack Emerson Cabrera said the athletes are treated like professionals.

They’re given new sneakers, cleats, uniforms and sticks and are followed around by photographers all weekend. The game is also broadcast live, and the teams took part in a charity day, working with Harlem Lacrosse, which Cabrera said was rewarding.

She assisted on Bayport-Blue Point attack Courtney Weeks’ goal, who Cabrera said is a longtime friend of hers with whom she played club ball.

“Everyone wanted to contribute somehow to the score, I was lucky to get a dodging opportunity to create an open cut for Courtney,” she said. “This was really an experience like no other. Under Armour makes it so special for us. I’m very proud to have ended my high school career being an Under Armour All-American.”

Cabrera, along with many of her teammates from the all-star game, will continue to compete alongside one another at the collegiate level. She’ll be joining Long Beach goalkeeper Sarah Reznick and Notre Dame Prep attack Hannah Mardiney

“It’s been something I’ve wanted to be a part of since I was little,” she said. “All of us have played with or against each other over the years and many of us will be joining forces together in college, so it was easy for our team to mesh. The transition I’m sure will still be a little tough, but as long as we all work hard, I’m sure it’ll go well.”
