Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco joined with members of the county’s drug treatment community, program volunteers and county officials to officially kick off the Sheriff’s Addiction Treatment Program wing housed in a newly renovated section of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Yaphank.

The new wing recently replaced the jail’s former DWI initiative, and according to DeMarco, offers a timely and effective treatment course for inmates whose crimi-

nal behavior correlates with an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

“The drug epidemic is affecting every community on Long Island and across the nation,” he said. “It impacts individuals, small business, our schools and quality of life. Almost every robbery in recent years can be linked to an opioid addiction, and the Suffolk County Correctional Facility should do all it can to help address this public crisis.”

DeMarco has spearheaded other initiatives throughout his tenure. Last year, he launched a Veterans Re-entry POD, and in 2011 he created the Youth Tier Initiative for incarcerated youth.

State Assemblyman Lupinacci wants to run Huntington

By Kevin Redding Kevin@tBRnewspapeRs.com New York State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R-Huntington Station), chosen May 30 as the Huntington Republican Committee’s candidate for town supervisor, had just 24 hours to decide if he wanted to commit to a bid for the coveted position, most recently held for two decades by Frank Petrone (D).

Lupinacci, 38, was approached by committee Chairwoman Toni Tepe to fill the party’s vacant candidate seat after Town Councilman Gene Cook (I), who announced his bid for the position May 21 and was on track to secure both Republican and Conservative support, suddenly dropped out.

But for the lifelong Huntington resident, business law and political science professor at Farmingdale State College and Hofstra University, respectively, and state lawmaker, currently serving his third term for the 10th district, it was an easy choice.

“When you’re in a position for a period of time you sometimes lose sight of what’s going on and what’s in tune with the people,” Lupinacci said, referring to Petrone’s 24 years as supervisor and the town’s need for new direction. “You become part of the system rather than actually being able to shake things up... I think I’ll be able to look

at the job from a different vantage point, as someone with a different skill set and legislative accomplishments that we can bring home to Huntington.”

As an assemblyman, elected in 2012, Lupinacci serves as the ranking Republican member on the Assembly Committee on Higher Education, and sits on the Judiciary, Election Law, Transportation and Park and Tourism committees. For nine years, starting in 2004, he was a trustee on the South Huntington school board.

“He’s a stand up guy,” Andre Sorrentino, chief of the Huntington Fire Department and Lupinacci’s friend for more than 20 years, said. “He’s just one of those guys you can trust, he’s a great leader, and he understands that our first responders and police department mean a lot. He’s a very good man.”

The assemblyman will be facing off against Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) who announced her campaign last month.

Lupinacci said his experiences make him a stronger leader despite Edwards currently being more directly involved in the town’s government.

“Tracey and I both are dedicated public servants, we both have that local level, being on the school board — she was on the Elwood school board, I was on South Huntington school board,” he said. “But I think the state experience gives me a different

Building off his initiatives in Albany, Lupinacci said his chief priorities as supervisor of Huntington would be to reverse a decline in quality of life and spend the town’s budget more wisely to avoid piercing the tax cap. “I wouldn’t have pierced the tax cap as the 2016 budget did,” he said.

Lupinacci said he wants to root out crime, especially MS-13-related incidents, through partnerships with local police and the federal government, and provide more treatment and aftercare programs for those addicted to heroin and prescription drugs.

As assemblyman, he’s supported heroin legislation and was involved in the opening of a state-supported aftercare site in Hauppauge that aims to prevent relapses.

He said he also wants to create a robust agenda dealing with ethics reform and more transparency in government, adding there should be more flexibility with the board’s strict three-minute speaking cap during the public sessions. “If we’re representing 210,000 people, we want to give them the ability to voice concerns,” Lupinacci said.

Moving forward, he wants to bring in new jobs and make progress on revitalization efforts started in Huntington Station, which, he said, will help keep young people in the area.

Harborfields district brings new tech plans to the classroom ‘We don’t know what the future will look like but we want to give the students every opportunity to learn and be prepared.’

Harborfields Central School District is looking to improve how teachers teach and students learn, with Tech 2.0, an education initiative meant to equip the district with technology-driven learning aids.

As soon as Superintendent Francesco Ianni took over at Harborfields, he said, he started to work with the administration to roll out this plan, which involves students and teachers using Chromebooks, lightweight laptops, with lesson plans.

“The nice thing about this plan is it’s a wonderful opportunity for the entire district,” Ianni said in a phone interview.

“We’re not only providing Chromebooks, but a plan for teachers’ curriculum to revamp how we teach and learn here. We want to make sure these are meaningful changes, not just another machine we’re bringing in.”

Currently the district has a certain amount of Chromebooks teachers can sign out in advance for a class lesson. But Tech 2.0 would create a plan where every lesson has possibilities with Chromebooks to enhance the class. Ianni said the initiative is expected to begin in the 2018-19 school year, when every student and teacher in the high school will have a Chromebook, and right now the district is using a pi-

“We don’t know what the future will look like but we want to give the students every opportunity to learn and be prepared,” Ianni said.

Administrators have sat in on several classes involved in the pilot program, and said they have already noticed exciting new ways students are getting involved in lessons.

Jordan Cox, executive director of instructional services, said students have been able to go on virtual field trips, take polls on events and take quizzes attached to the end of a presentation.

“The students have the ability to look at 3-D objects and interact with classmates on Google Docs, which is especially helpful if a student is out sick and needs to work on a group assignment,” Cox said in a phone interview. “This changes the learning landscape.”

He sat in on a class of students learning about World War II and the Holocaust, and the kids were able to take a virtual reality tour of a concentration camp.

Ianni said he observed a lesson recently, in a class learning about applying to college and applying for financial aid. He said the students were able to use Google Earth to go on virtual tours of the campuses of schools they were interested in. He also said this plan will help teachers see what students are understanding in real time. In a math class he sat in on, the students were taking a quiz and the teacher was able to look at the grades right away, instead of taking them home to grade that night. She saw a majority of the class was struggling with a certain question, and she was able to go over it again with the class right then.

town Suozzi wants to give free mental health services to veterans

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) is hoping to protect those who protect us.

Last month he introduced a new bill in Congress that pledges free mental health resources to those who have served in the military.

When presenting the bill, Suozzi stressed how difficult it is to identify and diagnose a mental illness in a veteran, as compared to physical injuries.

“It’s obvious when someone loses a limb or is injured tragically in war to identify that their injury is service-related,” he said. “But for veterans who go home at night and are alone by themselves suffering from a mental illness, too many are suffering and it’s not easy to identify these problems and demonstrate their injury is service-related.”

Suozzi said the mental health services would be made available through Veterans Affairs medical facilities such as the Northport VA and other veteran centers. The legislation would ensure any veteran, regardless of their discharge status, would receive “the mental health care they need.” Under the bill, reservists would also be eligible for the services. Suozzi’s office did not return requests for comment on where the funds would come from for the program and the

“This is a real, serious epidemic we’re facing in our country,” Suozzi said in a statement. “Our veterans find that they

don’t have any hope and many are committing suicide. We have an obligation to try and help these veterans that are facing this struggle. Democrats and Republicans must work together to address this issue.”

While the Northport VA said they couldn’t comment on current legislation, they said they “appreciated” Suozzi’s dedication to veterans’ issues. The Northport center currently offers several resources for mental health issues, including a psychiatrist in the emergency room 24/7, many substance abuse treatment programs and a resident post-traumatic stress disorder recovery and treatment program.

An aspect of the bill also includes mental health services for veterans with otherthan-honorable administrative discharges.

U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin said earlier this year he intends to expand provisions for urgent mental health care needs to former service members with other-than-honorable administrative discharges. According to the VA, this would be the first time a VA secretary has implemented an initiative specifically focused on expanding access to assist former service members who are in mental health distress and may be at risk of suicide or other adverse behaviors.

“The president and I have made it clear that suicide prevention is one of our top priorities,” Shulkin said in a statement.

lupiNACCi Continued from page A3 “We want to make sure we create that safe environment because then people are going to want to stay here and raise families and that’s something that we want them to do,” he said. “When they graduate from school, or return home from college, we want to make sure that along the 110 corridor, we continue to bring the hightech, high-paying jobs so people can afford to live [here]. We want to make sure there’s entertainment, restaurants, supermarkets, and that everything they need is within the township.”

When it comes to environmental initiatives, Lupinacci has supported water quality legislation and is adamant about preserving open space and maintaining the integrity of public parks, among other sections of Huntington. “We also have a huge fishing and boating community in the area, and we want to make sure we work with them to keep our pristine waters, so people always feel they always have great access to the waterscape we have here,” he said.

Born in Huntington Hospital and raised on 11th Avenue by a banker and a food industry worker, his father and mother respectively, Lupinacci graduated from Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District and Hofstra Univer-

sity, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.

He would go on to get his Juris Doctor at Hofstra University School of Law and Master of Business Administration at the Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University, but not before interning for the late Assemblyman James D. Conte (R), whom Lupinacci referred to as his mentor, and Hillary Clinton at the White House from 2000 to 2001, when she was First Lady.

When Conte was diagnosed with brain cancer and left his seat in 2012, Tepe called on Lupinacci, then in the middle of his third term on the school board, to be his replacement.

“I think he’s going to do quite well as supervisor,” Tepe, who was supervisor herself from 1988 to 1989, said. “Chad is a people-person and is interested in serving the public, working the taxpayer, and providing the programs and initiatives necessary to keep our town a vibrant suburban community. He’s also the type who isn’t afraid to tackle a problem.”

Lupinacci said he loves Huntington’s “welcoming perspective, no matter where you grew up, what your ethnicity is, or what religious background you are...this is a great community that has a lot of culture, a great nightlife, is rich in the arts, excellent school districts, beaches and waterfronts...you don’t have to leave this township because it has everything to offer.”

who use VA care. This is a national emergency that requires bold action. When we say even one veteran suicide is one too many, we mean it.”

Shulkin said there are more than 500,000 former service members who are discharged other-than-honorably, and roughly 20 veterans per day die from suicide, with only six using VA services on average.

A Government Accountability Office study showed 60 percent of troops that have been discharged for misconduct in recent years suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder or some other type of brain injury.

Suozzi cited the incident last month when a Navy veteran crashed his car into pedestrians in Times Square, killing one person and injuring many more. Suozzi said he reportedly was dishonorably discharged after exhibiting dangerous and unstable behavior.

“It’s simply too difficult for many veterans in this country to receive mental health counseling and we need to make it available for every single veteran in this country,” Suozzi said.

Rory Manning, assistant superintendent for administration and human resources, said another benefit of using the Chromebooks comes with the price tag.

“We used to have desktops in certain classrooms, but with these Chromebooks it’s cheaper,” he said in a phone interview.

The district is now able to offer more resources than before, he said.

Administration is not the only supporter of Tech 2.0 The Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Fund, a not-for-profit established to support educational programs in the district, made a $50,000 donation to the initiative, which is going to help purchase more Chromebooks for the classrooms.

In April HACEF hosted a Mardi Gras gala with members of the Greenlawn community, which raised $34,000 in a single night. HACEF then decided to donate $16,000 of its own funds to help bring the total to $50,000.

“It’s amazing the support from the community,” Karin Fey, vice president of HACEF, said in a phone interview. “This is the wave of the future, and we wanted to give something significant to show how important we think this is.”

A 35-year-old man from Huntington was driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima on Depot Road in Huntington Station at around 10 p.m. June 1 when he struck a parked 2007 Toyota pickup and fled, police said.

Gov. Cuomo among creators of new climate alliance Local officials weigh in on President Trump’s decision to withdraw from Paris Agreement

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com U.S. President Donald Trump’s (R) decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, a global effort to combat the threat of climate change, elicited strong responses from around Page A26 the world. One of the more notable reactions came from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who along with the governors of California and Washington State established the United States Climate Alliance.

The coalition will convene the three states, and others that have come out in support of the initiative, in committing to uphold the parameters of the Paris Agreement despite Trump’s June 1 announcement. As of June 5 the alliance included 13 members — 12 states and Puerto Rico.

“The White House’s reckless decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement has devastating repercussions not only for the United States, but for our planet,” Cuomo said in a statement. “New York State is committed to meeting the standards set forth in the Paris accord regardless of Washington’s irresponsible actions.

We will not ignore the science and reality of climate change, which is why I am also signing an executive order confirming New York’s leadership role in protecting our citizens, our environment and our planet.”

The Paris Agreement, which officially took effect in November 2016, aimed to strengthen the response to climate change globally by keeping temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius during the current century and also strengthen countries’ ability to deal with the effects of climate change. The U.S. is now one of only three nations on the planet not included in the agreement.

Climate Alliance will seek to reduce emissions by 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels and meet or exceed the targets of the federal Clean Power Plan, each of which were self-imposed U.S. goals of the Paris Agreement. The Clean Power Plan was established in 2015 to establish state-by-state targets for carbon emission reductions. Trump signed an executive order early on in his administration placing a hold on the plan and pledging a review. Cuomo also announced New York State will be investing $1.65 billion in renewable energy and energy efficiency in the aftermath of Trump’s decision.

In addition he said he aims to create 40,000 clean energy jobs by 2020.

Republican New York State Sens. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) and Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) did not respond to requests for comment through spokespersons.

spectrum spoke out about Trump’s decision in the aftermath of the announcement.

“We live on an island and have already begun to see some of the effects of our rising seas,” Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said in a statement. “To protect Brookhaven for our children and generations to come it is our responsibility to take action now. The president’s announcement today regarding the Paris climate accord is disappointing. On behalf of our residents, I will continue to fight to protect our environment.”

Democrats including 3rd Congressional District U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) and others blasted the decision in public statements.

“President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement is a devastating failure of historic proportions,” Schumer said. “Future generations will look back on President Trump’s decision as one of the worst policy moves made in the 21st century because of the huge damage to our economy, our environment and our geopolitical standing. Pulling out of the Paris Agreement doesn’t put America first, it puts America last in recognizing science, in being a world leader and protecting our own shoreline, our economy and our planet.”

New York State 4th District Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) expressed support for the newly minted climate alliance on Twitter, sharing the hashtag “#LeadNotLeave.”

First Congressional District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said in an emailed statement through a spokeswoman that he supported many of the goals of the Paris Agreement, but thought the U.S. “approached this entire agreement all wrong.”

He criticized former President Barack Obama (D), who played a leadership role in establishing the Paris Agreement, for bypassing Congress in reaching the agreement and for what he viewed as outsized pledges made by the U.S. compared to oth-

er world powers in the agreement.

“What we need to do moving forward should include continuing to take an international approach to protect clean air and clean water, and reduce emissions that are impacting our climate, but we must negotiate it correctly so that we aren’t over promising, under delivering and causing unnecessary harm,” he said.

During Trump’s June 1 speech announcing the withdrawal, he sited a loss of American jobs in the coal industry and crippling regulations on the business world as the drivers behind his decision.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, who was appointed by Trump, praised his decision.

“This is a historic restoration of American Economic Independence — one that will benefit the working class, the working poor, and working people of all stripes,” he said. “With this action, you have declared that people are the rulers of this country once again.”

Administrators from the New York District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration, a government agency that offers support to small businesses, were not available to comment on Trump’s decision or the formation of the United States Climate Alliance, but a spokesperson for the department instead directed the request to answers U.S. SBA Administrator Linda McMahon gave to Yahoo Global News June 6.

She agreed with Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement, adding she believes this will result in more job opportunities for Americans.

“I think [Trump] was making a statement that we’re going to look at what’s good for America first,” she said. “I do think climate change is real, and I do think that man has some contribution to climate change. Schumer: We must choke off the source of fentanyl

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com One U.S. senator is hoping to cut off the flow of fentanyl to the many New York residents struggling with drug addiction.

U.S. Sen. and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) announced support for a plan that would stop supplies of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times stronger than heroin and is not commonly reversed by Narcan, a lifesaving overdose drug, because of how quickly it enters the brain. The drug has come from China, Mexico and other countries into New York City and across the United States. Schumer also publicly decried a just-revealed White House plan to gut the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s budget by 95 percent.

“President Trump’s nonsensical proposal is the most destructive contribution he’s made yet to the fight against the opioid and heroin epidemic, and another clear sign he has no intention of keeping the promises he’s made to the American people,” Schumer said in a statement. “While candidate Trump pledged to ‘take care’ of Americans struggling with addiction and spend the money to succeed, his proposal to eliminate funding for programs, such as High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and Drug-Free Communities — which are instrumental in aiding local enforcement drug trafficking in many communities in New York, at the southern border and elsewhere — would effectively kick Americans seeking treatment to the curb and make our communities less safe.”

In 2017, the office received $388 million, and under the Trump (R) administration’s proposal, the office would receive $24 million in 2018. The Office of National Drug Control Policy, which was authorized in 1988 with bipartisan support, currently directs the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, the Drug Free Communities Program, anti-doping activities and the World Anti-Doping Agency. The proposed budget plan would also completely zero out the Drug-Free Communities and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas programs, which provide substantial support to treatment, prevention and enforcement efforts on the ground.

“Senate Democrats will never vote to defund these vital programs, and I know there are many colleagues across the aisle who feel likewise,” he said. “I urge the President and Republicans in Congress to reject this proposal immediately.”

With fentanyl continuing its sprint onto the streets of New York City and Long Island, Schumer also launched a major push for the International Narcotics Trafficking Emergency Response by Detecting Incoming Contraband with Technology Act. The senator noted the bill is even more important now, with the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s funding on the chopping block.

“Fentanyl-laced heroin is devastating our communities and law enforcement needs to utilize every tool and technology to stop the flow of this deadly poison,” Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said in a statement. “The act will help law enforcement prevent fentanyl and other synthetic opioids from entering the country and will be a great asset in our efforts to dismantle the networks of traffickers and dealers who

are fueling lethal heroin addictions.”

The Schumer-backed bill, introduced by U.S. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), would give U.S. Customs and Border Protection the hi-tech tools and resources needed to improve detection capabilities and increase the seizure of illicit fentanyl shipped to the U.S. from abroad through mail and express consignment carriers. Schumer said he would work with his colleagues to take action on this issue that is destroying families in New York and the rest of the country, and do everything in his power to prevent Trump’s proposal to cut funds.

Although pharmaceutical fentanyl can be misused, most of the fentanyl being sold on the street is illicitly manufactured.

While distributors in China are the principal source of the precursor chemicals used to manufacture the drug, as well as a source for finished-product illicit fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, Mexico is the primary source for illicit fentanyl smuggled into the United States. Fentanyl suppliers then use methods to mislabel shipments or conceal them inside legitimate goods in order to avoid Customs and Border Protection detection.

In 2016, nearly 200 pounds of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids were seized, primarily from along the southwest border. This is a 25-fold increase of seizures in 2015.

In 2015, 753 people died of an opioid overdose and, as of April, that number was projected to hit 1,075 for 2016. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says fentanyl is driving overdose death increases in New York City and is increasingly present in deaths from drug overdoses. There were 303 opioid-related deaths

in Suffolk County in 2016, including 171 related to fentanyl. In Nassau County, there were 190 opioid-related deaths in 2016, including 62 related to fentanyl.

“Fentanyl is now killing more Long Islanders than even heroin is, and we know it’s only a matter of time before the next deadly synthetic opioid hits the streets,” said Jeffrey Reynolds, president and chief executive officer of the Family and Children’s Association, a not-for-profit agency that helps protect and strengthen vulnerable children, seniors, families and communities on Long Island.

“As substance abuse prevention specialists and addiction treatment professionals work to reduce the demand for drugs, the act will help reduce the supply of synthetic opioids flooding across our borders, into our homes, schools and communities. This legislation is critical as we continue to battle an unrelenting opioid and heroin crisis.”

Suffolk selected for study to gather medical data for CDC

By Alex Petroski Alex@tBrnewsPAPers.com Suffolk County residents will play an important role in improving the health of their fellow Americans in 2017. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention selected Suffolk as one of 15 counties nationwide to participate in its annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a data collection study that is used to draw conclusions about the health and diets of people in the United States.

The CDC is the nation’s health protection agency, conducting research in the hopes of preventing the spread of diseases and tracking their prevalence. The NHANES is a 55-year-old program that tracks health and diet trends in the U.S. by selecting counties based on demographics with the goal of accumulating a set of data representative of the entire population of the country.

This is the second time Suffolk was observed as part of the survey since the turn of the century, according to study manager Jacque DeMatteis. The CDC arrived April 29 at Stony Brook University’s Research and Development Park in three mobile trailers outfitted with dozens of pieces of medical equipment, researchers and physicians to begin assessments on the approximately 600 Suffolk residents selected.

“It’s important because right now we’ve

got all of these miracles happening with cancer research and things like that, without information that people help us to provide — a lot of it comes from here — [researchers] don’t have anything to draw on,” DeMatteis said of the purpose of the yearly survey during a tour of the CDC mobile facility May 19.

Charles Rothwell, director of the National Center for Health Statistics, reiterated the importance of accumulating the data in a statement.

“The survey is a unique resource for health information, and without it we would lack important knowledge about major health conditions,” he said. “The comprehensive data collected by NHANES has a far-reaching and significant impact on everything from the quality of the air we breathe, to the vaccinations you get from your doctor, to the emergence of low-fat and ‘light’ foods on the shelves of your grocery store.”

The process for selecting participants within a county begins with about 1,500 addresses, and interviewers scour the area in the hopes of securing about 600 willing participants who also provide a representative sample of age ranges, genders, races and ethnicities and degrees of health. The selected participants who are willing to be examined then visit the mobile facility to be subjected to a variety of tests of blood pressure, diet, dental/oral health, vision and hearing, bone density, liver function and much more using

DeMatteis made the case for selected participants making the trip to be studied despite some minor possible inconveniences.

“For the people who participate, they get their results back,” she said. “If anything abnormal comes up they’re contacted immediately. Our national health officer will contact them and we’ve had a couple of situations where it was kind of life-threatening situations and they were totally unaware of it.”

Participating adults also receive $125, reimbursement for travel expenses and the opportunity to receive credit for five hours of com-

munity service. Newborns and up are required for data collection, though specific scans and tests are not done uniformly across age groups.

“A lot of people do it for the exams, and in the past even more people had no means to get access to health care,” DeMatteis said.

No medical procedures are offered at the site, though on occasion physicians are forced to recommend immediate treatment if anything concerning appears as a result of a test.

Patients are also allowed to pick and choose which tests they’d like to participate in of the ones they qualify for. The CDC urges anyone selected to participate in the survey.

PersPectives Sugars: How we got to this point Your turn

By chris zenyuh Throughout our evolution, fruit stood as the primary source of sugars in our diet. That we evolved to desire sweetness, I contend, was not for energy but for the vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that come with the fruit. The fiber helps slow sugar absorption and reduce its negative metabolic potential, and the vitamins compensate.

The limitations of seasonal fruit accessibility made getting too much of these sugars infrequent, at most. Access to purified cane sugar was limited as well, due its tropical origins. The cost of growing and shipping cane sugar slowed its consumption, certainly for those of lesser means. Still, the demand for sugar steadily increased, a fact that the Eng-

lish monarchy used to fund its war chest.

William Duffy (in his book “Sugar Blues”) has suggested that the sugar machine was largely behind English colonization and enslavement through the 1800s. Duffy suggests that denying sugar’s responsibility for metabolic dysfunction dates back to Dr. Thomas Willis, private physician to King Charles II. Willis both discovered and named diabetes mellitus. Smart enough to recognize the illness and its sugar-related cause, Willis was also smart enough to name it after “honey” instead of sugar, perhaps to keep his job and his head!

Enjoying rations of sugar and rum, tens of thousands of the British sailors who guarded the sugar routes fell ill and died from scurvy. School children are taught that scurvy is a vitamin C deficiency, as it was discovered that the symptoms could be reversed with the addition of citrus to the rations. Sadly, this well-known story promotes the denial of the cause: too much sugar (and rum). Our food, medical and supplement industries continue to promote the use of fortification and vitamin supplements to “protect” against illnesses like scurvy, rather than incur financial loses that would result

from curtailed consumption of sugars.

The spiraling decline of our general health gained momentum in 1973, when then Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz instituted a 180 degree change in the farm subsidy program.

Prior to 1973, farmers were directed by the government to curtail production to keep the supply and demand for corn in check. Sometimes, the farmers were instructed not to grow corn but were compensated for lost income. The restricted supplies kept corn prices high, making it too expensive to use high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener. Sugar cane, expensive due to its tropical origins, found itself in a limited range of food products.

The new program launched in 1973 rewarded corn farmers for producing as much corn as possible. Soon, the science to produce more corn, then the science to engineer additional uses for the extra corn became big businesses. High fructose corn syrup and cattle feed businesses were early beneficiaries of the new system. The ranchers and corn refiners lobbied to pay below cost for corn.

Corn farmers would lose money, but, the

new farm bills enabled the farmers to make up their losses (and more) by receiving the subsidies, funded by tax dollars. That made it cheaper to feed cattle corn than to feed them grass and cheaper to sweeten food with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) than with sugar.

Americans were now able to purchase foods sweetened with HFCS and corn-fed meat at much cheaper prices than ever before. The cost, of course, does not include the medical expenses that may be incurred from chronic exposure to glucose and fructose, though.

The Sugar Association, still burdened with the expense of sugar cane’s tropical origins, has expanded its use of sugar beets to become price competitive in the caloric sweetener market. Farmed and processed in the continental United States, sugar beets are used to sweeten processed foods almost as cheaply as HFCS. If the ingredient label doesn’t specify cane sugar, it may very well be beet sugar. Of course, it is still sucrose.

Now you know why caloric sweeteners are omnipresent in our food system and how “food” can be available so cheap. You might want to reconsider the amount that you consume of what nature so frugally offers. Regardless of its source or history, it is metabolically the same!

Kyree Johnson and Lawrence Leake put on a show at the Suffolk County track and field championships/state qualifier last weekend at Port Jefferson, turning in standout performances in multiple events to earn berths in the state finals at Union-Endicott outside of Binghamton June 9 and 10.

Johnson captured county titles in the 400-meter dash and long jump, and Leake won the 400 hurdles and took third place in the 110 hurdles. Johnson, Leake, Jonathan Smith and Anthony Joseph then teamed up to win the 4x400 relay and qualify for the state championships in that event.

“All in all it was quite breathtaking,” Huntington’s head coach Ronald Wilson said. “We came here looking to win gold medals and that’s what we did. Now our attention is on the state championships, where we want to show everyone what the Blue Devils are all about.”

Johnson and Leake both qualified for the state finals in three events, but Leake will forego the 110 hurdles to concentrate on 400 hurdles and 4x400 relay.

“They’re premier athletes and they are anxious to once again show everyone what they are capable of accomplishing,” Wilson said.

The two seniors have won league, division, county, state and national titles with

Huntington during their careers.

Johnson soared to the Suffolk long jump crown on the wings of a leap that measured 23 feet, 5.5 inches. Amityville’s Kerron Gonzales placed second with a jump of 22-03.25. The Blue Devil star came back to win the 400 dash in 46.68 seconds, which set meet and school records and is the fastest recorded by anyone in the state this spring. Johnson is also No. 1 in the state in long jump after leaping 23-09 feet earlier in the season.

“I’m extremely happy,” Johnson said.

“I’m going to try and win all three events next weekend.”

Leake coasted to victory in the 400 hurdles in a time of 54.79 seconds, more than 1.5 seconds faster than runner-up Brandon Gilpin of Amityville. The Huntington senior was third in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 15.25 seconds, which was a mere 22/100ths of a second off the pace set by Connetquot’s Christian Forlett, who won the event.

“I’m happy to be going to states for the last time [I can],” Leake said.

Huntington’s 4x400 relay team swept across the finish line in 3 minutes, 17.42 seconds, easily turning back challengers from No.2-finisher Half Hollow Hills West (3:21.78) and third place Half Hollow Hills East (3:24.99).

“We plan to have a good week of practice,” Wilson said, “and then give it everything we have on Friday and Saturday.”

Huntington’s Caballero wins county pentathlon title Erika Varaday takes gold in race-walk Rebecca Caballero put her all-around athleticism on display as the Huntington senior mastered five events to win the Suffolk County Division II girls’ track and field pentathlon championship for the second straight year.

Caballero, a conditioned athlete, has had an unmatchable competitive streak.

Her march to the pentathlon title was interrupted by stormy weather, but the Blue Devil standout didn’t let that obstacle or any other deter her from winning another gold medal.

She won the 100-meter hurdles in a new personal best time of 17.19 seconds and took first in both long jump and the 800 run. Caballero was second in shot put and sixth in high jump. Her overall point total of 2,501 was identical to her gold medal performance last year.

Caballero easily outdistanced runner-up Hope Cuomo, a North Babylon junior who totaled 2,151 points. Comsewogue senior Olivia Farmer (2,037) and Comsewogue freshman Lindsay Hannon (1,924) placed third and fourth, respectively. EastportSouth Manor junior Kaitlin Mauer (1,828) was fifth and West Babylon senior Cansel Cebaci (1,672) was sixth.

Huntington sophomore Erika Varady also took home gold in record time. She captured the 1,500 race-walk title in a new school record time of 7 minutes, 8.92 seconds. She and her sophomore teammate, Keily Rivas kept pace with each other before Varady ultimately pulled away. Rivas finished second in a time of 7:21.23.

Trump’s decision fails Americans, and the world Late last week President Donald Trump (R) announced his intention for the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, an accord signed by 197 countries in 2016 to mitigate the global effects of climate change. The U.S. target was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.

We intensely disagree with Trump’s decision, a decision made by only two other countries in the world — even North Korea is on the right side of this.

The U.S. was the second leading country in greenhouse gas emissions in 2015, behind only China, according to the World Resources Institute. Our nation emits more pollutants than the 28 countries making up the European Union, which is home to almost 200 million more people than America.

Why is this bad? In simple terms, emitting greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere warms the Earth’s surface so, as our emissions continue to increase, so does our surface temperature.

The two warmest years in the U.S. were 2012 and 2015, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and the decade from 2006 to 2015 was the warmest on record. Aside from a warmer Earth, sea levels are also rising as a result of climate change.

In a special issue earlier this year, we explored the many reasons why a warming planet spells out danger for Long Island. The first victims of climate change will undoubtedly be those living on shorelines, especially to the north, as water levels rise.

The first early victims, though, will be those living in small, impoverished countries.

Tuvalu, a cluster of nine islands in the South Pacific, has already seen a fifth of its population flee their homes, most to New Zealand, as their land continues to be swallowed by the ocean. Climate change refugees have barely any guidelines or funds to help them once they lose their homes.

Trump suggested his decision stemmed from a desire to go back to promoting “clean coal” as a source of energy, as opposed to cleaner — in reality — 21st century options like wind and solar.

With this decision, we’re not being international leaders, shaping a promising future for the next generation. Instead, we’re passing the buck. Trump said he plans to renegotiate U.S. involvement in the agreement to make a better deal. While we challenge him to keep his word, French President Emmanuel Macron said, “There is no plan B because there is no planet B.” New York state is one of 13 members of the United States Climate Alliance, an agreement between 12 states and Puerto Rico to uphold the tenants of the Paris Agreement despite the federal government’s decision. We commend New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) for his efforts to keep our state poised to push toward a sustainable future, along with other leaders across the country that have refused to accept Trump’s decision.

Climate change will continue to affect us despite our president’s lack of support for combating the danger, and we cannot afford to follow in his footsteps.

Earlier this month President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian officials in an Oval Office meeting closed to the American press but open to a photographer from Tass, the Russian news agency. Not only did this compromise intelligence which had been gathered by a third party, Israel, this came one day after firing FBI director, James Comey, for continuing to investigate Russian interference in last November’s election.

A week later our congressman, Rep. Lee Zeldin, weighed in, stating, “Until there’s any shred of evidence whatsoever that the president himself has done anything wrong . . . I’m not going to start playing along hysterically with people who have pledged to resist, persist, oppose, obstruct entirely.” Ironic he should criticize obstruction in defense of a president flagrantly obstructing justice by asking Comey to quash the investigation into Michael Flynn.

Although Zeldin fails to identify who’s “hysterical”, probably the most hysterical people in America right now are Trump’s

own White House staffers alarmed by his conduct.Immediately after Trump’s meeting with the Russians, Thomas Bossert, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, placed hurried calls to the directors of the CIA and NSA, the services most involved in the intelligence-sharing arrangement with Israel, to give them a heads-up. It’s no accident that virtually all the leaks to the press about Trump are from White House staffers troubled about Trump’s temperament and fitness for the presidency.

Trump fires the head of the FBI, lies about the reason for it to the American people, leaks sensitive information to the Russians which is a crime for anyone but the president, jokes with the Russians in the Oval Office that Comey is “crazy” and a “nut job”, and blandly acknowledges that firing Comey had “taken off” the pressure on him. The Kremlin hierarchy must be laughing themselves silly. And in old news, Trump still refuses to release his tax returns. Why? Yet in spite of all this, Zeldin still insists Trump

has done nothing wrong. Zeldin certainly sang a very different tune last July, when he was baying for Hillary Clinton’s blood for having “grossly mishandled classified information”, as he put it, merely for using a private email server.

It’s too bad Zeldin puts his own political career above his constitutional responsibility to serve as a check and balance on the president. Instead he attacks journalists for holding the president accountable, and votes in Congress to shield Trump from any inspection of his tax returns even in closed congressional committee. In his first term. Zeldin met with Oath Keepers, a right-wing fringe group fretting about Americans being disarmed by the government and herded into concentration camps. The reality is that if democracy withers in America it will be not with a bang but with a whimper, through the kind of corrupt authoritarianism brought to us

by President Trump, with the complicity of Rep. Zeldin.

Promoting economic stimulus plan as pollution solution Your editorial policy repeats the county’s misinformation that we must protect our waters from nitrogen pollution by replacing our septic systems with these new advanced treatment systems. There is no doubt that nitrogen is a problem in some locations, but these complicated treatment systems in our front yards are not the answer.

Studies have shown that nitrogen from acid rain falling directly on the bays and runoff from the land together with fertilizers are a major component of nitrogen pollution. These expensive septic systems (up to $20,000 installation and $600/yr operation and maintenance) will do nothing to reduce nitrogen from these sources.

The county’s own website touts that these new systems are suitable for construction on small lots near wetland areas “with significant site constraints such as high ground-

water … in coastal areas” (www.

ReclaimOurWater.info). Any additional construction in the watershed will increase nitrogen from runoff regardless of the type of septic system installed. The long-term solution is to limit population density and development in environmentally sensitive areas, not increase it.

The fact that the environmental and editorial community has jumped on board shows what a great PR job the county has done in promoting an economic stimulus package as a pollution solution. Plans are already in the works to require these systems to be installed, not just in sensitive areas, but whenever a septic system has to be pumped or whenever a property is sold. The industry projects that thousands of jobs will be created with millions of dollars coming out of our pockets. This is the underlying reason for the

program — to help plug the $100 million plus hole in the county budget — at taxpayers’ expense.

The grant program only pays about half of the installation cost with the owner having to shell out or take a loan for the additional cost estimated at up to $10,000, not including landscape and legal fees. The new Article 19 of the Sanitary Code also requires that the owners of the new system file deed restrictions against their property that require maintenance contracts be paid in perpetuity and subjects the owner to investigation and penalties for noncompliance.

Anyone thinking of installing these systems should seriously consider the financial and legal ramifications and carefully read all the information on the website www.ReclaimOurWater.info.

Seeking shade and a book under a pecan tree

have hundreds of new friends I’ve never met, and a profound appreciation for the people who created them or shared their lives.

I recently attended my first BookExpo at the Javits Center in New York City, where I was surrounded by booksellers, librarians, agents, book publishers and authors including Stephen King, James Patterson and John

A highlight for me was a panel of children’s book authors, which included actress Isla Fisher, who has starred in movies including “Wedding Crashers” and “Definitely, Maybe.”

While I was intrigued to see Ms. Fisher in person, the other authors owned the stage, as Fisher readily admitted that she wasn’t a writing peer to her fellow panelists.

Jason Reynolds, an African-American writer for middle-grade and young adult novels, electrified the audience.

He talked about how he used to visit his great Aunt Blanche in South Carolina, where the sun was so scorching it burned his neck. His aunt, who was 85, sat on her hot porch, smoking cigarettes and watching the children.

Aunt Blanche planted a pecan tree — as he said, a “pea can” — when she was 4. The tree had become enormous by the time Reynolds was a child, providing shade for the younger crowd.

Reynolds, a 2016 National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature with “Ghost,” suggested that books offered the kind of shade he desperately needed, providing relief from the heat.

Reynolds asked himself, “What if I get to be the pecan tree?”

Jennifer Weiner, meanwhile, has ventured from the world of adult fiction and “Good in Bed” to writing for a younger audience, which includes her recent book, “The Littlest Bigfoot.”

Weiner said she does much of her writing in the equivalent of a large closet in her home, although she completed “half of a book waiting in a carpool line.”

Dutch author Marieke Nijkamp shared some insights into her latest book “Before I Let Go,” which is about a girl named Corey who loses her best friend Kyra.

Nijkamp, with fans waiting in a long line for the blue-haired author’s signature, said she “definitely goes for a walk right after I kill a character.”

While circling the Javits Center exhibits, I bumped into Owen King. He is the son of acclaimed author Stephen King, and is promoting a book he wrote with his father called “Sleeping Beauties,” in which all the women but one in a small Appalachian town become wrapped in a cocoon when they

go to sleep. If someone awakens them, they become violent. That leaves the men without the civilizing and calming influence of women. It sounded to me like an adult version of William Golding’s classic “Lord of the Flies.”

In describing the novel, Owen King said he enjoyed the time writing and editing the book with his father. He described how a King dinner time activity includes coming up with story ideas, many of which never see the light of day.

I asked Owen, who was clad in an untucked plaid shirt and looks remarkably like his father, what caught his eye at the Expo. He highlighted a book by Steve Steinberg about a Yankees pitcher named Urban Shocker. King said he loved the name and found the story compelling, about a pitcher who went 18-6 in the Yankees’ famous 1927 season despite battling heart disease. I picked up a copy, which was autographed for my son, and I look forward to learning about Shocker’s world.
