Huntington official urges residents to be smart with their skin Councilwoman uses personal experience with skin cancer as motivation to spread awareness

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com For one Huntington Town councilwoman, warning residents about the dangers of the sun isn’t just a work obligation — it’s personal.

Councilwoman Susan Berland (D) has been dealing with the effects of spending summers under the sun’s rays for nearly a decade, and it has motivated her to host “Melanoma Prevention: Avoiding the Dangers of Tanning,” an event open to the public Tuesday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 100 Main St. “I think it’s important for any parent whose kid wants to tan to learn spending too much time out in the sun is dangerous,” Berland said in a phone interview. “Hopefully this sways people from making bad decisions.”

Berland said she had her first run-in with skin cancer seven or eight years ago, when she discovered she had an irregular mole on her lower back that was precancerous. These moles, also known as dysplastic nevi, increase the risk of a patient developing melanoma in a mole elsewhere

on the body.

“When I was in high school, I was one of the girls wearing Hawaiian Tropic [sunscreen] zero [SPF] and using tinfoil at the beach getting fried,” Berland said. “I did a lot of damage. Nobody knew, you just always thought you looked so much better with a tan.”

When she had kids, she said she was focused on making sure her children were protected with sunscreen, and would often “run out of steam,” by the time it got to her skin.

“I didn’t get fried anymore, and I really thought I was doing the right thing and getting a healthy tan,” Berland said. “Turns out there’s really no such thing as that.”

The councilwoman said she’s had six procedures so far — the most recent in March — to remove dangerous parts of her skin, and she goes for full-body checks every three months.

“I always hope to leave the doctor’s office as I came in but that hasn’t been the case yet,” she said. “The pain is just not worth it — it’s just not.”

In some cases she said skin abnormalities had to be removed with liquid nitrogen. “On a scale from one to 10, that’s about a seven, but in some cases I had to have the procedure on my lip and that is like a 50,” she said of the pain associated with the treatment. “And that is why I am doing this. People are not paying close enough attention. I am a total convert now, I lay under an umbrella at the beach and wear SPF 50.”

Berland said she hopes people will realize how serious skin protection is during the event, where Meghan Rothschild, a cancer survivor and spokesperson for the Melanoma Foundation of New England will be speaking about her fight against cancer and how to prevent melanoma, the

H’ton officials, businesses condemn certain tax reforms Community opposes possible elimination of tax deductions hinted by Trump admin.

Government officials and community organizations alike are concerned with possible tax reforms they say could cost Long Island residents millions.

While President Donald Trump (R) has not released any formal proposal yet for tax reform, organizations like the Long Island Association, a nonprofit group focused on business and civic affairs, are reacting to both Trump’s and his administration’s rhetoric during and since the 2016 election.

The LIA sent Trump a letter in December outlining some of their fears with possible tax reform in the coming

year, specifically the possibility of eliminating deductions for real property taxes, mortgage interest, state income tax and reducing charitable donation deductions.

“We are concerned about some of the comments your Secretary of Treasury nominee Steven Mnuchin made about limiting the ability to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes on federal tax returns,” the letter from the organization said. “Speaker Paul Ryan has also expressed support for scaling back or eliminating the deduction for state and local income and property taxes.”

Matt Cohen, vice president of government affairs and communications for the LIA, said eliminating deductions could be a “disaster,” for Long Island. He referenced vari-

ous news articles including one in The Hill, which reported the administration is taking a “serious look,” at capping deductions including ones for charitable donations.

“If these proposals are given more structure and momentum it would be devastating for Long Island,” he said in a phone interview.

The LIA Research Institute did a study on the effects eliminating the deductions might have and said it could cost Long Islander’s $4.4 billion. In a 2013 report, they found Long Island sends the federal government $23.1 billion more than it receives back in programs and services from the government, so taxpayers in all brackets would be impacted by these cuts to deductions. The study said the middle class would be hit especially hard with tax increases, anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 annually, and $3 billion would be taken away from the regional economy.

“No matter who you are, if you’re deducting mortgage interest on your returns you’re going to get hurt by this,” Cohen said. “In an area with high costs and high taxes, this could even drag down the real estate market.”

Cohen is not the only one who is concerned.

Suffolk County legislators and Executive Steve Bellone (D) echoed the sentiments.

“For Suffolk County residents, who already pay a steep price in property taxes, this type of tax reform will be a blow to homeowners and will have a negative ripple effect on our economy as a whole,” Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said at an event earlier this month. “With potential increases as high as $4,000, this reform will cut off many Suffolk County residents from the American dream by discouraging home ownership, and will cripple current homeowners’ ability to make ends meet.”

stressed the importance of residents understanding this debate as it reaches the national stage.

“Whether you are a local business owner or a middle class Suffolk County resident looking forward to a reduction in your taxes as it was promised along the campaign trail, it’s important for all of us to understand what the impact to each of us will actually be if you have a proposal such as this one that would be implemented,” he said.

Bellone said the elimination of these deductions is not welcome to Suffolk County.

“Any attempt by Washington to eviscerate these critical financial incentives under the guise of tax reform is a nonstarter and should be dead on arrival,” he said. “Instead of making it more costly to own a home on Long Island, the federal government should do more to lower taxes for hardworking homeowners and not the other way around.”

Elected officials were not the only voices speaking up.

Robert J. Ansell, board member of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce also spoke at the April 5 press event.

“Two-thirds of the country’s gross domestic product is consumer spending,” Ansell said. “The elimination of the mortgage interest, state income tax, and real property tax deductions not only puts a significant damper on incentivizing home ownership, but will also mean that families will have less disposable income to spend in their communities on local businesses.”

Cohen said it’s important to get out early with this issue, even though no formal or concrete decisions have been made yet.

“It’s a new administration, a new theme with new policies — we just want to get out ahead of this and show where we stand,” he said

Student creates community prayer boards in Centerport By victoria espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com One young Huntington resident decided to take an individual religion project and turn it into a community-wide effort.

Lydia Murphy was assigned a confirmation class project at Centerport United Methodist Church, where she takes religion classes. Students were encouraged to take part in community service activities, but in Lydia’s case, she created her own initiative: A prayer board that any member of the community can contribute to.

“I came up with this idea because there’s a lot of negativity going on right now, all over the country and the world,” Lydia said in a phone interview.

“I thought it would be a nice way to bring some peace.”

The eighth-grade student described the project as boards that anyone can come with a sharpie and write a positive prayer for whoever and whatever they want.

Lydia, her family and other members of the parish ended up creating two prayer boards, one located at the front of the Methodist church on Little Neck Road,

and one on the path that leads to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs on Prospect Road.

Lydia said Riverhead Building company donated the wood supplies needed to construct the boards.

“It was so wonderful to hear this idea coming from a 13-year-old,” Pastor Roy Grubbs said in a phone interview. “It’s tremendous, putting together ideas with other clergies and different denominations and faiths to pray communally.

Given the state of what we hear of tensions or a lack of experience sharing within even our community, this can show commonality and how we hold the same things important: peace, love and understanding.”

Lydia said since the boards have gone into place, she has seen many different things written on them.

“People have been praying for Syria, for their grandparents, for safe travels with their family,” she said. “A lot of people have prayed for peace in the community. It makes me really happy, and I’m a little relieved people are using it.”

Lydia said she was surprised how quickly residents started using the prayer boards.

“The first day, within a half hour of

putting it up, someone brought a piece of paper and pinned up their prayer,” she said. “It’s nice to see that people are using it and praying for all different groups of people.”

Lydia’s mother, Lynn Murphy, said she was happy with her daughter for her persistence with the idea.

“It’s fabulous, the fact that people are using it,” she said. “I’m as proud as a mother could be, it’s just such a positive thing. I’m proud of her and how the church embraced the idea.”

Grubbs said he’s excited for the potential of the idea as it continues to grow.

“People have definitely been noticing it, they’re already filling it up,” he said. “This opportunity to share what’s inside your heart will strengthen the community.”

At the dedication ceremony earlier this month Lydia said she was excited for the potential her project has.

“If this makes one person happy or brings them peace, then it works,” she said. “I pray that this board brings happiness and positivity to everyone in the community.”

Huntington set to go green for Earth Day in Hecksher Park By victoria espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Huntington will be celebrating Earth Day with its annual Family Earth Day Expo this Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at a new location in Heckscher Park at the corner of Prime Avenue and Main Street.

“The new location for this year’s Earth Day Expo, Heckscher Park, will make the event extra special for Huntington residents, reminding of us of the beauty we are trying to preserve by being environmentally responsible,” Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) said in a statement. “The expo shows residents how to save money while taking environmentally appropriate actions such as safely shredding unwanted documents, bringing e-waste for recycling and dropping off unneeded and unwanted medicines. As it is every year, the expo is both educational and fun for the whole family.”

Some of the events and programs set for this Saturday include: • Medicine disposal: Thanks to an effort that is cosponsored by the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, residents will be able to drop off unwanted and unneeded medications, which will be taken by the Suffolk County Police Department for environmentally safe disposal. The town will also distribute information about the adverse environmental effects on groundwater and Long Island’s drinking water supply when proper protocols are not followed in disposing of pharmaceutical drugs.

• Plug into e-cycling event, sponsored

by Covanta: This is the latest addition to the town’s comprehensive and expansive recycling program, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to dispose of obsolete e-waste items such as cellphones, pagers, radios, stereos, computers, laptops, fax machines and televisions.

• Identity theft prevention: “In today’s technologically advanced world, identity thieves have more tools in their toolboxes to locate and steal our very valuable and sensitive personal information,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) said in a statement. “Identity theft can cause a significant amount of financial and emotional hardship, which is why it is so important help protect ourselves from falling prey.” Joining again this year will be SafetyShred, one of the leaders in on-site document destruction and identity theft prevention on Long Island. Bring your old unwanted outdated documents for on-site disposal. (Please note there will be a three banker-box size limit per person.)

• The green showcase: This event will offer multiple demonstrations including residential solar energy, organic gardening and fun activities for the kids. In addition, children can learn how compost is made and plant a seed in a recycled pot.

• Marine life exhibit: Representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension will provide children of all ages the opportunity to touch and experience a variety of sea specimens in their marine life touch tank, as they demonstrate the importance of protecting our precious marine environment. There will also be sign-up information available on Cornell’s environmental summer camp programs.

“Children and parents alike will definitely have the opportunity for a lot of hands-on fun at this event,” Cuthbertson said. “In recognition of Earth Day, it is equally important to be able to show families across Huntington how easy it is to protect kids from harmful chemicals and pesticides, how to make homes and cars more energy efficient and how to save money in the process.”

A 36-year-old man from Saint James failed to stay in his lane while he was driving a 2004 Dodge north on East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills at around 12:40 a.m. April 15, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-offense driving while impaired.

April 15, a 34-year-old man from Mount Sinai was serving as a security guard with an expired security card license, according to police. Police said he was preventing unruly entry, surveying the crowd and doing his job regardless. He was arrested and charged with having a non-valid registration card as a security guard.

Falling tree hits propane truck, Lloyd Harbor house The Huntington Fire Department was dispatched to Lloyd Harbor Village April 10 at 1:10 p.m., for a report of wires and a tree down on a propane truck on West Neck Road near Pheasant Drive.

When units arrived they found a large tree had come down and struck a house and a propane truck that was in the driveway making a delivery. The large tree was resting on both the house and truck, and no electrical wires were involved. Huntington firefighters secured the scene with the

Lloyd Harbor Police Department, and also checked the truck for any leaks and the tank for damage.

None were found and a tree service was dispatched to remove the tree safely. There were no injuries reported. One Huntington Fire Department engine responded under the command of assistant chief Rob Conroy, assisted by deputy chiefs Brian Keane and Scott Dodge.

On Medford Lane in East Northport at around 6:45 p.m. April 14, a 46-year-old man from East Northport used a knife to puncture a basketball beyond repair, in order to threaten somebody, and then punched another man in the face, police said. He was arrested and charged with second-degree harassment and criminal mischief.

On April 15 at around 10:50 a.m., a 28-year-old man from Holbrook was walking past a shopping center on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington when he was found to be in possession of oxycodone, xanax and Ecstasy, according to police.

He was arrested and charged with three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

On April 14 at around 9:10 a.m. on New York Avenue in Huntington Station, a 30-year-old man from Huntington Station was found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle, heroin and a glass pipe containing crack cocaine, according to police. He was arrested and charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to police, an unknown person entered Home Depot on New York Avenue in Huntington Station at around 9:10 a.m.

Police said at around 3 p.m. April 15, a 21-year-old man from Huntington Station was in and out of lanes while driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla on Route 110 and Weston Street in Huntington Station while in possession of marijuana. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Shoplift spree

A 53-year-old man from Commack was arrested for stealing assorted groceries totaling $306.71 from Stop & Shop on Jericho Turnpike in East Northport at around 5:15 p.m. April 15, police said. He was charged with petit larceny.

A message from a donor during National Donate Life Month Your turn

BY Jane Bonner Last year, I was blessed with the opportunity to save a life, and what made it even more special was that it was the life of a friend I’ve known since we were teenagers.

My story is not unique, but it’s one that I like to share with people to help increase awareness of the need for organ donors.

All one has to do in order to understand is look at the numbers: •25 million Americans have kidney disease.

•475,000 Americans are on dialysis.

•More than 100,000 people are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.

•There has been a 20 percent increase of people on the kidney transplant waiting list since 2005.

•Each year 5,000 people die in the U.S. waiting on the list for a kidney transplant.

My own experience as a kidney donor and the reality of these numbers are what led me to participate in the Rogosin Institute’s Organ Donation and Access to Transplantation Roundtable event.

As a councilwoman in the Town of Brookhaven, a large municipality of 500,000 residents located in central Long Island, New York, I spend much of my time helping to improve the quality of life for people in the community. Each day, I meet with people to talk about a whole range of issues from potholes and barking dogs to land re-zoning, downtown revitalization and protecting the environment. Hardly life and death situations, but important nonetheless. So, when my husband John and I planned to meet my longtime friend, Tom D’Antonio and his wife Cheryl at the Huntington Lighthouse Festival in September 2015, I certainly was not expecting to begin a life-altering journey that continues to this day.

Knowing Tom for over 40 years, I have been very familiar with his nearly lifelong struggle to control type 1 diabetes while living day-to-day with kidney disease. Even when he’s been faced with what appeared to be insurmountable odds, his spirit, optimism and determination have been inspiring. So much so that when he told me about his search for a kidney donor, I made a commitment right then and there to “share the spare” with my friend. Gratefully, my husband John and my children provided their unwavering support for this very important, personal decision. Fast forward to April 2016 and I am recovering at New York Presbyterian-Weil Cornell Hospital, thank-

Veterans salute

The Harborfields Central School District invited veterans from throughout the community to their annual Jazz Cabaret Night April 5. The evening event took place in the Oldfield Middle School auditorium where tables were set up in patriotic fashion and desserts were served.

The Harborfields High School Leadership Class mingled with the veterans at each table and learned more about their service. Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students created thank you cards for the veterans which were placed on the tables for them to take home.

The Leadership Class introduced themselves in front of the crowd and the microphone was then passed around the tables to each veteran where they had the opportunity to talk about their backgrounds and what branch of the military they came from. Many spoke about how they became

involved with the military and how their service impacted their lives.

The Harborfields High School Vocal Ensemble performed a number of songs for the attendees including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Respect” under the direction of Clare Jackson.

The veterans also heard musical performances from the Harborfields High School Jazz Band under the direction of Dan Bilawsky. They played classic songs, with some featuring a vocal quartet of four students.

Executive Director for Instructional Services Jordan Cox concluded the evening by thanking the veterans for attending and for their service and sacrifices.

“We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the service that you provide to us every day,” he said. “You allow our students to grow up in an environment that is safe, that allows them to flourish and allows their voices to be heard.”

East Northport Middle School music students performed a musical showcase at East Northport Public Library’s “Fireside Friday” on March 24.

Led by music teachers Bill Ayasse, James Guarnieri, Marie Michalopoulos, Jonathan Preddice, Don Sherman and Dana Warren, friends and family attended the event where they enjoyed musical se-

lections from members of the school’s band and orchestra.

Attendees also heard from the school’s soloists and chorale group. The students performed a medley from the school’s recent production of “Annie.”

“Thank you to the East Northport Public Library for hosting such a wonderful event,” said music teacher Dana Warren.

Meeting a poet Washington

Drive Primary School students heard from award-winning poet and author Darren Sardelli April 4. Sardelli is known for his humorous and whimsical poetry.

Three grade-level assemblies took place where Sardelli interacted with students from kindergarten through second grade.

To prepare for the poet’s arrival, students read his work during the school’s morning announcements and created posters to welcome Sardelli to the school.

During the presentation, students laughed

at his silly poems as he recited a few of them to the classes. He also discussed what poetry is, how he writes and how to use imagination when creating stories. Sardelli brought up the importance of emotions when writing and allowed students to showcase their best angry, happy and sad expressions.

The classes learned about rhythm and heard a few different riddles which they were eager to solve. Sardelli told students about his favorite poets including Dr. Seuss and encouraged them to each have an idea book.

“It just takes one idea to change your life and change the world,” he told the students.

Down to business Twenty

Northport High School business students recently competed in the New York State DECA Career Development Conference among 2,300 competitors. Advised by business teachers Kristen Cogan and Elizabeth Price, the team brought home 18 medals from the competition.

Juniors Kelly Finegan and James O’Hara and senior Sydney Gilison placed in the top 10 in the state overall in their individual categories, while senior Noelle Mandery placed fifth in the sports and marketing

category. Mandery has now qualified to compete in the international competition in Anaheim, California this April.

In addition, all competitors at the state level took a 100-question written exam and were judged in at least one role-play event where they had to solve a case study problem. Sophomore Max Aftel and juniors Luciana Arteaga, Stephen Muzyka and Colin Trainor medaled in these events.

“I’m so proud of these students,” said Cogan. “It’s wonderful when we can see the students using what they learned in class to solve real world problems in the role-play setting.”

On April 8 and 9 in front of the Best Market’s storefront on Larkfield Road in East Northport, Cub Scout Pack 312’s Tiger Scouts of Den 4 participated in a food drive to help the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry at St. Anthony’s of Padua Roman Catholic Church in East Northport. This was one of the first independent initiatives of the Den 4 Tigers.

Den 4’s leader Matthew Prendergast said, “It was the Tiger Cubs in Den 4 of Cub Scout Pack 312 that essentially ran this event, but they also had the support of each family member during each shift to not only enforce the two-deep leadership rule of the Boy Scouts of America (which is a scout safety standard) but to also show our commitment to our children in how much we believe in them and what they can do even at their young age.”

In total, not only was it an amazing ex-

perience for the Tiger Scouts but for the families involved as well. The generosity of the community surprised all of them. They gathered a total of 1,556 pounds of food which is just shy of 1,300 meals for the hungry. All of this work was done in only eight hours spread over two days.

Prendergast said, “To me, Cub Scouting is not just a duty or a task that the kids work at each month but more of a way of life. This was the first in a series of opportunities to yet present themselves where these scouts can find a lasting niche at each stage of their scouting journey. I was honored by the support and commitment and look forward to our next food drive where we can make a bigger difference.”

Humpty Dumpty Day Nursery School of Greenlawn recently took part in the eighth annual Pajama Program, a not-for-profit organization that provides pajamas for children in need in the Unites States and around the world.

All the children took part and collected over 100 pairs of pajamas. This truly was a valuable experience as the children learned the importance of helping others.

Protecting against plane crashes

Following a spike in small plane crashes over the last few years, U.S. Sen. and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) called for an investigation, and he got answers.

On March 3, Schumer sent a letter to the National Transportation Safety Board asking for an in-depth analysis of recent U.S.-registered civil aircraft accidents on Long Island to help develop recommendations to prevent future incidents.

“I strongly urge you not just to conduct yet another investigation … but to also undertake a comprehensive and system-wide review to understand why these accidents are happening, and what can be done in order to decrease the occurrences,” he wrote in the letter.

“The number of airplane crashes across the system must be reduced.”

This request came after a recent crash in Southampton, though others have also occurred in Shoreham, Port Jefferson, Setauket, Kings Park, Hauppauge and Sunken Meadow in recent years.

The board, in a letter of response to Schumer, said it examined data from accidents in New York over the last five years, including the number of accidents, types of injuries, types of operations, causes of accidents and locations.

Since 2012, 156 aviation accidents have

occurred, with 140 of these aircraft operating as flights under Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations — small noncommercial aircraft.

The causes have been similar in nature for the incidents with completed investigations. Most included safety-related issues, like loss of control, which occurred in one-third of aviation accidents. An in-flight loss of control accident involves an unintended departure from controlled flight, which could be caused by an engine stall, pilot distraction, loss of situational awareness or weather. According to the letter, the board said that preventing loss of control in flight in general aviation is currently on its 2018 Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements.

Other causes of aviation accidents included loss of engine power, controlled flight into terrain and hard landings.

Moving forward, the board plans to reach out to the general aviation community and host a safety seminar later this year.

“We consider Long Island a suitable venue for this safety seminar because a number of general aviation accidents have occurred in that area and because we believe the robust general aviation community there will be receptive to our safety outreach,” the letter stated. “We anticipate that this seminar will help raise awareness about these recent accidents in New York and around the country and about specific issues affecting the general aviation community.”

Reflecting on the climate change issue

Stony Brook University students may benefit from the Excelsior Scholarship program.

Free ride or helping hand Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has announced that the Excelsior Scholarship program is included in the 2018 State Budget, providing residents who meet certain criteria free tuition at state colleges. But on closer look, this program doesn’t wipe away all costs of getting a higher education.

While the scholarship program provides free tuition, there are many costs it doesn’t cover, like additional fees, room and board, and textbooks, which combined can be as prohibitive a cost as tuition. In other words, it won’t be the free ride many might think it is when they hear “free tuition.”

Recipients must also meet several requirements, including attending a CUNY or SUNY school full time, completing degree requirements in two or four years and having a household income of less than $100,000 this year and less than $125,000 by 2019.

After college, students will be required to remain working in the state for as many years as they receive the funds. And while in school, students must maintain satisfactory grades to keep their tuition free.

Even if the scholarship covered all college costs, is an experience such as educating oneself ever free? Education is always an investment of valuable time and energy, and depending on the courses one takes, that investment of time and energy can be an enormous one.

While movies about fraternity or sorority members partying or running wild on campus may make for hilarious stories, in real life the majority of students can be found in lecture halls or in their dorm rooms studying for the next big exam.

Being forced to “rough it” is not a prerequisite for success in college or for appreciation of a high quality education.

The Excelsior Scholarship program will create more opportunities to provide students with the tools they need to achieve their future goals, no matter what he or she or their family’s financial situation may be. The cost of college has become a heavy burden on many of today’s families, and for many careers an education beyond high school is required.

Excelsior indicates something of superior quality. Let’s give our future students, no matter what their financial situation may be, the opportunity to afford an education of superior quality by lightening their load, even if it’s only a little lighter.

In response to the March 30 editions of the Times Beacon Record Newspapers: Thank you for publishing such impressive articles on the probable impact of global warming on Long Island, in the March 30 edition.

It is so tragic that we have a president who has assembled an administration intent on pretending that global warming is not happening, and even going so far as to claim that global warming is a hoax. The Republican Party has a lot to be proud of and an excellent track record on environmental issues — the creation of the national parks system, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act — all done during Republican administrations. Under Ronald Reagan, chlorofluorocarbons were banned to protect the ozone layer. Under George H. W. Bush, a cap and trade program was put in place to limit sulfur emissions that cause acid rain. The current national (not local) Republican office holders are betraying the legacy of their party’s environmental stewardship.

Here in the 1st Congressional District of New York, our representative in Congress is Lee Zeldin.

Mr. Zeldin has taken action to prevent the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from approving the dumping of dredging material in Long Island Sound, and has voiced concern about nitrogen pollution in Long Island’s water. He has spoken of the importance of keeping our drinking water clean. That’s great.

However, I have not been able to find any clear statement from Mr. Zeldin with regard to whether he feels that global warming is occurring or not. What is clear is Mr. Zeldin’s voting record. In my view, Lee Zeldin has consistently voted

on the wrong side of practically every environmental bill that’s been introduced since taking office. Mr. Zeldin has voted to approve joint resolutions voicing disapproval of EPA rules limiting emissions from power plants — like coal-fired power plants in the Midwest that we are downwind from. I have read that a third of the nitrogen pollution in Long Island’s waters is from power plants in the Midwest.

Lee Zeldin is a great guy in a lot of ways, but it is the voting record that counts. We need for our representative in Congress to serve as a counter to the anti-environmental agenda we see coming out of

Washington. Unless Mr. Zeldin makes a complete turnaround on the issues I have raised, we’ll be needing to find someone else to represent us.

Thank you again for the excellent coverage your newspaper has provided on environmental issues, the features you publish on education, articles highlighting the work being done by members of the community in scientific research, and a whole range of other things that are being done in our community.

Trump curriculum suggestions May I humbly propose an addition to the curriculum of the now-defunct Trump University entitled “How to undermine a democracy 101.”

Content as follows: 1. Conduct a campaign riddled with violence inducing, xenophobic rhetoric.

3. Label your opponent as felonious and promise to imprison him or her should you be elected president.

4. Deny the validity of the vote unless you win.

5. When elected install in key offices close

family members and supporters regardless of experience, skills or temperament.

6. Undermine the security apparatus and install your own loyalists.

7. Continuously spread false inflammatory information to misinform the public and to divert attention from your corruption

and incompetence.

8. Laud and engage autocrats like yourself in spite of their human rights records.

9. Impugn the judiciary and the media.

All is ready now for you to rise up and take power as the savior of “the people.”

H

ave you seen it? In the pace at which we live our lives, it’s possible you missed it. I was at the drugstore recently and I saw it on the side of a box. It took a moment to process. How often does a product surprise you?

It had the potential to be a “you got your chocolate in my peanut butter” moment. When I was younger, my older brother, or No. 1 son as he’s been described on these pages for decades, used to

choke down even the ones that were spectacular failures because he didn’t want to waste food, and because who knew at what point a displeasing food might become an acquired taste? After all, how many people remember their first sip of beer? Did it tickle their taste buds or did they want to find water or a soda to wash it down?

So, back at the drugstore, I scratched my unshaven chin — I was buying razors to remedy that problem — when the image on the side of a box diverted my attention from important thoughts: How much longer would this take? Would I meet my deadlines?

Was I supposed to wash some missioncritical clothing last night for some must-win game today?

As I looked at that image, I could imagine the moment Igor came up with the idea. There he was at a barbecue. With his acquired-taste beer a few inches from his left hip, he surveyed the food on his overloaded plate. He had a thick cheeseburger on

a sesame seed bun, half sour pickles, an enormous mound of sauteed onions and mushrooms, coleslaw, and several Pringles sitting next to his burger. Igor works for Pringles and he won’t attend any picnic without bringing his favorite curved chip. The burger was on its way to his mouth when he realized he was missing something. He stood up to kiss his sister-in-law, maneuvered around his nephew who was bouncing a pink ball against the steps, and he and his burger arrived safely at the condiment table. On Igor’s way back to his beer, the pink ball rolled underfoot, causing him to turn his ankle and mix up the contents of the plate.

He hobbled to his spot and surveyed the damage to his food. His ankle could wait. Igor, like my brother, pressed on. He sighed at his precious Pringles. They were broken into tiny pieces, which was no fault of the distinctive packaging, and they looked like they’d been through a battle. They were covered in ketchup. Did he dare

Igor found the small part of a chip not smothered in ketchup and brought it to his mouth. Aware that every eye was on him, he nodded slowly, as if the taste was something extraordinary.

“Well,” his brother said, trying to be helpful, “why not, right? We put ketchup on French fries, which are also made from potatoes, right?”

Was it a weakness or a strength on Igor’s part that made him insist this was an inevitable combination that would become a must-have item for July Fourth barbecues? I suppose it’s up to us to decide whether ketchup-flavored potato chips are the next peanut butter cup.

If they are, maybe Pringles can edit a Seinfeld clip where George Costanza double-dips his chip into a bowl of ketchup?

After 11 minutes, and with the Kingsmen already up 5-0, the Knights tallied their first goal of the game, when freshman Michelle Torzilli dished the ball off to senior Madisyn Hausch, who scored on the cut. The pair mixed it up on their team’s next possession, when Hausch flipped the ball to Torzilli, who found the right corner to make it a three-goal game.

“We have played a lot of the heavy-hitter teams early in the season, and Kings Park was expected to be a closer matchup for us,” Elwood-John Glenn head coach Janine Bright said. “We expected them to be tough due to their level of experience as they’re a team of almost all 11th and 12th graders.”

Winwood scored in response, but John Glenn junior Carly Guder scored to maintain the margin with three minutes till halftime.

“We came out feeling that we could play strong today — we showed teamwork — we worked the ball around a lot, which was our game plan to possess the ball,” Kings Park head coach Sally Ayres said. “Jill Winwood has always led our team, along with Michaela Bartley.”

The Kingsmen stretched the net twice more before the break, courtesy of eighthgrader Kiara Feibusch, who scored off a feed from Winwood, and senior Shannon Savage,

for an 8-3 advantage.

“John Glenn definitely put up a good fight, [but] we came into today’s game with our heads up after a tough loss last week to Islip,” Winwood said. “Our team played well — we were very unselfish with lots of assists and goals spread all around our roster, so I’m happy to have another ‘W.’” The Knights scored first to open the second half, when junior Victoria Cacioppo went the distance unassisted, but the Kingsmen rattled off five unanswered goals to surge ahead 13-4 with 15 minutes remaining.

John Glenn senior Sarah Weitman’s goal stalled the Kings Park scoring frenzy, but it was short-lived.

“Sarah [Weitman] has literally played all positions for us this season, other than goalie,” Bright said. “She was able to go into this game and give 100 percent and was a big part of our offense and defense at different points of the game.”

Kings Park lit up the scoreboard two more times in the contest. Cacioppo and Torzilli led John Glenn with two goals apiece, and Hausch and Guder each had one.

Winwood topped the scoring chart with four goals and five assists, Bartley followed with a hat trick and two assists and Feibusch, the youngest player on the team, also had three goals, and added an assist.

Bartley said she hoped her team would continue its winning ways when Kings Park hosteds Eastport-South Manor April 19.

“We have a tough game coming up against Eastport-South Manor,” Bartley said. “So I’m hoping that with this ‘W’ we can carry this

momentum and hopefully we can come out on top.”

Results of the matchup were not available by press time. Kings Park travels to East Islip next, April 21, for a 4 p.m. matchup at East Islip Middle School.

“We had a strong performance in goal

in the first half and most of the second with [sophomore] Lexie Kotsailidis,” said Ayres of her goalkeeper who finished the win with 11 saves. “We’ll build on this momentum going into our next game knowing that when we work together as a team, positive things can happen.”

Harborfields 9, Bayport-Blue Point 7 Andrew Loiacono’s third goal gave Harborfields’ boys’ lacrosse team (5-1) a 9-5 lead. Tommy DeVito won 12 of 18 faceoffs in the Division II win over host BayportBlue Point April 18.

Northport 12, Commack 7 Emerson Cabrera had four goals and an assist, and Olivia Carner added three goals , one assist for Northport’s girls’ lacrosse team (6-0) in its League I win over Commack April 18. Claire Morris finished with 13 saves.

Northport 7, Riverhead 3 Matt Lindley went 2-for-3 with two runs and three stolen bases, Jake McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs and Chris Caravouranos went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs led Northport’s baseball team April 17.

Keeping score Harborfields 13, Locust Valley 7 Layla Morris had three goals and an assist to lead Harborfields’ girls’ lacrosse team (6-3) in a nonleague win over visiting Locust Valley April 18. Erin Tucker made nine saves, Hallie Simkins had a hat trick.
