Northport School District Struggles to Justify School Closure

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM In the early morning hours of Jan. 10, at 12:35 a.m., after an exhaustive five hours of presentations and comments from board members and the public, much of it heated and emotional, the Northport-East Northport school board members revealed that they are in fact considering closing the Northport Middle School, not necessarily immediately, but in September 2020.

Declining enrollment and the Long Island Power Authority tax certiorari case, they said, are driving the decision. The site’s ongoing contamination concerns, they added, are an underlying factor. The decision, they noted, is still exploratory.

A weary crowd welcomed the comment but still wondered what plan, if any, the district has in place, if the environmental consulting firm it hired, P.W. Grosser Consulting also known as PWGC, continues to find toxins on-site.

Superintendent Robert Banzer explained to the community that while the school has options, none of the choices are ideal. Split sessions, consolidation and relocating students to other districts that have offered space were mentioned as potential temporary solutions to a “code red” situation.

Board member Larry Licopoli asked the superintendent to outline a plan to present at the next board meeting.

So far, PWGC has found unsafe levels of arsenic on a sports field and extraordinarily high levels of mercury and silver in a leaching pool 10 feet underground and just outside science classrooms in the G-wing. Mercury levels of 632 ppm were detected there. The county requires action at 3.7 ppm.

The consultants said, when asked by parents, that they did notice an unusual odor in the building. So far, though, none of their air quality tests detected a presence of contaminants in the building that would warrant its closure.

An Abundance of Caution The overarching public debate of the Jan. 9 board meeting centered on the seemingly relative nature of risk assessment.

After finding the toxic chemicals on-site, the district determined that it would close three classrooms, G-51, G-52 and G-53. Those three classrooms, the environmental consultants explained, were science rooms with sinks that drain into the leaching pool, where the chemicals were found. Odorless fumes could potentially migrate through the piping into classrooms, but the drain systems rely on P traps that prevent that from occurring, they said. While the results of air quality tests were completed, the district closed those classrooms out of “an abundance of caution.” Air quality results in the G-wing classrooms were later found to be normal. But many families said the cautionary closure didn’t go far enough.

The consulting firm explained that building evacuation would be justified only after pathways of exposure were identified when unsafe levels of a toxin are found on-site.

Since no mercury levels were detected in the hallways, closing other portions of the school were unwarranted.

The consultants explained that toxic vapors could potentially rise from contaminated ground under a concrete foundation beneath classrooms. So far, the consultants said, they have not found any unsafe measurements in the school building to suggest that vapor migration is an issue. Testing is ongoing. The consultants could not say how far or wide the high concentrations of mercury would be found. The G, L, K and H wings could potentially be impacted, the consultants said.

If it’s under the building, demolition may be called for, they said.

Some parents were outraged. The strategy lacked sufficient level of precaution for their comfort. As the investigation continues, they said students should be removed, since unsafe exposure levels might later be found. Some kids feared going to school while others resented their parents for not sending them.

Many people said they could not sleep at night.

The social and emotional effects of the situation weighed heavily on most people who spoke, including some board members and residents who recently bought homes in the community.

No current teachers addressed the board, but a retired teacher did.

“That’s the classroom that poisoned me,” said former science teacher John Kobel, who addressed the consultants during the meeting.

“That’s the classroom I was carried out of and taken by ambulance to Huntington Hospital.”

Kobel said that he was diagnosed with heavy metal poisoning from mercury and lead and suffers from occupationally induced asthma. He said he witnessed the removal of contaminated soil 20 years ago, when contaminants were found in the same location.

Kobel said that he has identified 48 teachers who are sick and 34 diagnosed with some form of cancer, 20 of them have died.

Parent groups have identified 18 students diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and other rare blood diseases over the last 10 years.

Parents asked the consultants if their investigation included reviewing the data of sick kids. They said “no” but would consider it going forward.

“This is not my community, but I will fight if I feel there is a problem,” said Heather Moran-Botta, a representative from PWGC. Consultants could not say where the contamination was coming from but speculated that it could be from improperly disposed thermometers. A remediation plan is being developed they said. Ongoing testing would dictate the scope of the plan.

Several parents said that they were not sending their students to school under the circumstances. Board officials, when pressed, advised families that keep their kids home from school to call the absence “parent sanctioned.”

They advised anyone with contamination concerns to discuss having their child’s urine and blood tested with their pediatrician.

Out of the three potential exposure pathways — ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact — the most likely scenario that could impact students and staff at the school was inhalation,

according to the consultants.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, PWGC continued testing. Results have not yet been reported.

On Monday, Jan. 14, parents held another sickout. The district did not respond to requests for information about absenteeism in the school, since mercury, silver and arsenic was detected Jan. 6.

Suffolk County Health Department said that school boards have jurisdiction over the issue, but noted that their toxicologists are answering questions from families in the community at the request of the state health department. The New York State Department of Health said that school boards ultimately have jurisdiction over air quality concerns.

N.Y. State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) has requested the involvement of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to help with the investigation.

Northport School District Advances Relocation Plan

In a Jan. 15 letter to the community, Superintendent Banzer of the Northport/ East Northport School District announced that the school board will meet for an unscheduled work session to discuss relocating students out of the Northport Middle School to prepare for the Jan. 23 board meeting.

The announcement came after no mercury vapors weres found in any spaces

inside the Northport Middle School. The environmental testing firm also found no detectable levels of mercury vapor around the leaching pool during its Jan. 11 testing on site. Their investigation continues.

Banzer said that he has been gathering input from all interested parties to develop a contingency plan that minimizes disruption if students need to be relocated as a result of future testing results.

House Passes Bill to Aid Long Island’s Water Contamination Cleanup

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Water quality has been an important issue on Long Island as new containments continue to emerge. A piece of legislation passed Jan. 10 by the House would help mitigate a group of man-made chemical substances.

The PFAS Action Act of 2019 (H.R. 535) would regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and assist local communities in cleaning up water contamination.

“When it comes to our communities’ drinking water, there is no room for error,” said U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RNY-1), a member of the Congressional PFAS Task Force, in a statement. “With Long Island identified as the area with the most amount of emerging contaminants in our drinking

water compared to the rest of New York State, all levels of government must act with urgency to help protect local families’ drinking supplies.”

The bill would also direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to designate the chemicals as a hazardous substance to prevent further environmental contamination and require cleanup of contaminated sites, set air emission limits for the hazardous substances, prohibit unsafe incineration of PFAS, limit the introduction of new PFAS chemicals into commerce, identify health risks by requiring comprehensive health testing and monitoring for PFAS in drinking water, require a drinking water standard for at least PFOA and PFOS that protects public health and provide funding through the PFAS Infrastructure Grant Program to assist local communities with impacted water systems.

Peter Scully, deputy Suffolk County executive and water czar, said the legislation is vital.

“The new law is important in that it recognizes the urgency of the need for EPA to act quickly to address the potential health risks associated with these emerging contaminants, while at the same time acknowledging the cost impact of more stringent regulation on public water suppliers and, by extension, on people they supply water to,” he said.

Scully added the law addresses the cause of the problem by requiring manufacturers to submit reports about how much PFAS they produced and by requiring the EPA to add pots, pans and cooking utensils that do not contain PFAS to its Safer Choice Program.

“The bill could be a huge step forward in the effort to get ahead of his problem if it is fully implemented,” Scully said.

One-on-One with NY State Sen. Jim Gaughran

Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) is heading to Albany for the 2020 legislative session, and after a productive first year in office, he said he’s determined to again tackle a long list of issues. With Andrew Raia stepping down as assemblyman as of Jan. 1 to fill the role of Huntington town clerk, Gaughran will be the area’s only representative in the state house unless a special election is held.

With a state budget of $179 billion and budget deficit of $6 billion, ethical reform and corruption, he said, are at the top of his to do list.

The Times of Huntington sat down with Gaughran Jan. 12 to get an overview of his agenda.

In the new year, citizens can look forward to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) energy initiative.

He’s formulating an environmental bond for voter approval in November designed to address climate change. Gaughran doesn’t know how it will work. Details will be unveiled with the governor’s pending budget, he said.

He plans to support sewage treatment plants and is behind plans to address clean water initiatives for the Long Island Sound and the groundwater, which is the sole source of Long Island’s drinking supply.

On the topic of taxes, Gaughran said that he’s opposed to raising taxes on the middle class and notes that half of all state revenue comes from the wealthiest 3 percent of residents. Those taxpayers, however, are declaring legal residencies in other states to escape New York’s tax burden.

According to President Donald Trump (R), that’s why he declared Florida as his legal residence.

That situation is compounding the state’s budget woes.

Lost Medicaid revenue is also a fiscal concern.

Of the $6 billion deficit, $4 billion is lost federal funding to cover Medicaid costs.

“People are living longer,” Gaughran said.

“More advanced technology translates into higher health care costs.”

Overall, Gaughran suggests that citizens pay attention, as many already do, and to demand transparency in government. Toward that effort, he said he will continue to host town hall meetings with constituents. He expects to schedule an upcoming town hall on Long Island Rail Road issues.

To address ethics issues, Gaughran is supporting a law that limits lawmakers’ outside income to 15 percent of their annual $110,000 salary.

Gaughran is also pushing for election reforms.

Last year’s early voting initiative was an initial success. But he said communities need more polling places. One polling place in each town is too few. He’d like to see one voting place for

every 50,000 citizens. He said he’s opposed to schools being used for early voting.

Bail reform is another troublesome issue for Gaughran. If he had not voted for last year’s budget, which included the bail reform legislation, it would have cut state aid to schools.

So, this year he’d like to restore judicial reviews for 64 crimes and set bail as needed. Bail should not be waived for hate crimes, he said. He said other senators are supporting his initiative and he continues to get calls about it.

He also wants to help drug addicts with arrests find treatment and is alarmed that Long Island real estate agents discriminate, as reported in a recent Newsday expose. He is supporting legislation that suspends or revokes a broker’s license when they are found to discriminate against minorities.

Gaughran has been a proponent of better laws that crack down on unsafe driving for limousines.

U-turns, blamed for a deadly crash in Cutchogue in 2015, will soon be illegal. That crash resulted in the death of four young women from Kings Park, Commack and Smithtown. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, Gaughran introduced nine bills to address

the problems.

“I so admire these families that have channeled their grief into something positive,” Gaughran said.

With regards to the Long Island Power Authority, he’s waiting on the courts to see how the case unfolds and is following the Town of Huntington to see what it will do. He plans to reintroduce legislation this session to prevent LIPA from collecting back taxes through tax certiorari suits. LIPA’s aggressive lobbying in the assembly derailed the initiative last year, after his senate bill passed with overwhelming support.

The costs behind LIPA’s lobbying and public relations campaigns need to be reined in, he said, and need more oversight.

“Citizens have no consumer protection with LIPA,” Gaughran explained.

His plan is to authorize regulatory oversight of LIPA to the New York Public Service Commission and require annual audits. Currently, if fraud or misrepresentation is found, he said the state can’t take action. He’d also like to better understand the relationship between LIPA and PSEG.

Lawmakers Pass Limo Safety Laws Senator Jim Gaughran (D-Northport), together with the Senate Majority Conference, passed legislation Jan. 14 that will help better protect New Yorkers from limousine crashes.

The bills were created together with Assembly Democratic majority colleagues based on testimony from families of victims involved in tragic crashes. This package of limo regulations will better protect passengers, ensure higher standards for professional drivers, improve passenger communication options and increase penalties for bad actors who put public lives at risk.

“Today we are taking action on important limo safety legislation that will protect passengers and drivers alike. These bills, including mandatory seat belts and cracking down on illegal U-turns, are critical safety measures that will prevent tragic crashes like the one just a few years ago in Cutchogue, from happening again. I thank the brave and tireless advocacy of the families of the Cutchogue and Schoarie crashes for being the driving force behind today’s bills and fighting for safety.”

The additional limo regulation reforms passed by the Senate Democratic Majority includes: ▪Customer Service Resources: This bill, S.6185B, sponsored by Sen. Rachel May (D-Syracuse), requires maintenance of a hotline and website for New Yorkers to report safety issues with stretch limos, and requires the information to be conspicuously posted in vehicles for passengers.

▪Drug and Alcohol Testing: This bill, S.6186B, sponsored by Sen. Jen Metzger (D-Rosendale), requires pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in large for-hire vehicles.

▪Commercial GPS Requirements: This bill, S.6187C, sponsored by Gaughran, requires stretch limousines to use commercial GPS devices to assist them in using roads that are best suited for their vehicles.

▪Increased Penalties for Illegal U-Turns: This bill, S.6188B, sponsored by Gaughran, expands the U-turn ban to stretch limousines capable of carrying nine or more passengers including the driver, and increases the financial and criminal penalties for drivers making illegal U-turns.

BNL Wins $2 Billion Bid to Build New Ion Collider

Through answers to basic questions, scientists develop new technology that changes the world, leading to medical breakthroughs, energy applications and national security devices.

That’s the theory behind the U.S. Department of Energy’s decision last week to award a 10-year project that will cost between $1.6 billion and $2.6 billion to build a new electron-ion collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton.

For the scientists, the discoveries will flow from answers to questions about the nature of visible matter.

“The big science we’re excited about, the hundred-year-old questions, are things like where does the mass of a proton come from,” said Robert Tribble, the deputy director for science and technology at Brookhaven National Laboratory and a nuclear physicist.

The EIC is like a microscope to look at quarks and gluons, he explained.

With support from numerous New York State and Long Island leaders, BNL recently won a competition against Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator in Virginia to build an electron-ion collider. Members of the Jefferson Accelerator, as well as over 1,000 scientists from 30 nations, will partner with BNL staff to conceptualize and build the new collider, which will be the most advanced ever constructed.

“We do not understand very dense matter that exists in the universe in objects like neutron stars and black holes,” Tribble explained in an email. “In addition to understanding atomic nuclei, we will be able to generate a better view of the universe writ large [with discoveries from the EIC].”

Over the next decade, the construction of the new EIC will employ 4,000 people, said Doon Gibbs, the laboratory director at BNL. That number represents the workforce that will, at one time or another, contribute to the construction of this new facility.

The new EIC will expand on the technology of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, which has been operating since 2000 and will stop running experiments in 2024. Indeed, part of the appeal of BNL as a site for this new facility arose out of the ability to extend the resources by building a new electron storage ring and electron accelerator elements.

Researchers will collide electrons and protons and numerous atomic nuclei to study the strong nuclear force. These collisions will reveal how the subunits of protons and neutrons in the nucleus, namely the quarks and gluons, come together to help generate mass in visible matter.

The staff at BNL is “delighted and excited” that the site for the EIC will be on Long Island, said Gibbs. “Our design has the capability of using many existing technologies and extending them farther than they’ve been before.”

Indeed, even the conception of the EIC has led to some new scientific breakthroughs, some of which the lab and its partners will share with the public in the next few weeks.

While the application of research at the EIC will likely lead to breakthroughs in fields including materials science, researchers at BNL are excited about basic questions about the nature of nuclear matter.

A typical experiment at the EIC will likely follow the same pattern as it has with RHIC, in which hundreds of researchers from around the world collaborate to understand physics properties.

In the next few years, researchers will develop a detailed design before they start construction.

Gibbs said the facility has a strong handle on the safety features of the new collider, which will build on the protocols and designs developed at the RHIC as well as with the National Synchrotron Light Source II, also at the lab in Upton.

“We love challenges at BNL,” Gibbs said.

“We like building big machines. We’re good at it. We have a whole class of staff who, in particular, are experts at this kind of activity and they are pretty excited.”

Area politicians are also excited about discoveries in basic science, translational benefits in areas like medicine and the expected boost to the local economy.

“Establishing the electronion collider on Long Island might be focused on particles, but it will add some serious mass — nearly $1 billion worth — to the local economy,” U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) said in a statement.

BNL has the “talent, the technology and the track record to make the most of this national project.”

Schumer believes this project will guarantee that BNL continues to be a “world class research facility for the next generation.”

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) praised the leadership at BNL. “I congratulate BNL Director Doon Gibbs for leading this exceptional organization and all of its scientists who have worked incredibly hard every step of the way to make this possible, and can’t wait to see what they do next,” Zeldin said in a statement.

Village

Northport Village Administrator Pleads Guilty A former Northport Village administrator pleaded guilty Jan. 10 of stealing village property and using public funds to purchase home improvements and construction materials for his personal use.

Timothy Brojer, 44, of Kings Park, pleaded guilty to official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor. Brojer was sentenced to a oneyear conditional discharge and is required to forfeit various construction tools and windows purchased using village funds. He will also be required to pay restitution in the amount of $3,699.30 to the Village of Northport, representing the value of the stolen materials that were not recovered in the investigation, as well as a $1,000 fine.

“This defendant was essentially using

public funds as his personal piggy bank, buying construction materials for his own home on the taxpayer’s dime,” District Attorney Tim Sini (D) said. “I thank the Village of Northport and the Northport Village Police Department for assisting with this investigation and holding Mr. Brojer accountable for his actions.”

In July 2019, the village received an invoice for approximately $1,900 for a sliding glass door from Windowrama for use in the Plank House renovation; however, the project plans did not include a sliding glass door. A subsequent review of Windowrama’s records revealed that Brojer had obtained the sliding glass door from them.

Further review of the project records revealed that 12 windows had been ordered

from Windowrama that were not included in the project plans, which cost approximately $4,404.

On Sept. 3, 2019, investigators from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Village of Northport Police Department executed a search warrant at Brojer’s home in Kings Park, which resulted in the recovery of seven of the windows and numerous construction tools that Brojer had purchased using village funds. Brojer’s house was also found to contain the sliding glass door.

Brojer was appointed village administrator for the Village of Northport in 2015. In 2018, he was assigned to oversee the renovation of a village-owned building known as the Plank House, located at 20 Beach Ave. in Northport.

Harborfields senior Joe DeSimone led the way, nailing four triples and two field goals, and sank three from the line for 19 points. Junior Sean Keys followed with eight from the floor and a free throw for 17 and juniors Ward Tucker and Aidan Glackin netted nine points each.

Adding two points each were Sean Dowd, J.

J. Desiderio and Matt Torres. The win lifts the Tornadoes to 4-4 in the league, 6-5 overall.

Harborfields retakes the court Jan. 13 when it hosts Rocky Point and will hit the road two days later against West Babylon. Game times are 6 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., respectively.

Letters to the Editor Editorial A More Perfect Union Good News for LIRR Commuters Ethical behavior has always been required and expected of government officials. In the pages of our newspapers, we are reporting on corruption cases, conflicts of interest and varying degrees of unfair, immoral and in some cases illegal practices in government — all levels of government.

As one elected official recently stated, there’s a lot of this going on. You see it on federal, state and local levels of both major political parties and we need to eliminate that.

An administrator in the Village of Northport recently pleaded guilty to using village funds as his “personal piggy bank,” according to Tim Sini (D), Suffolk County district attorney.

Former county DA, Tom Spota (D), and one of his top aides were convicted of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

We are learning that the New York State Public Service Commission lacks oversight of the Long Island Power Authority, which can easily lead to abuse. Lawmakers are now looking to address that omission. We are not saying LIPA is corrupt, but if fraud is detected through agency audits, officials say they currently can’t take action. And with impeachment proceedings moving forward in the White House, there’s no shortage of examples of issues that deserve our attention.

What exactly is corruption? It’s when elected officials steer contracts or use public policies and practices for their own personal benefit rather than the public good. When a government agency steers contracts to its family members, clients and business partners or to family members affiliated with these groups, it’s a red flag.

Corruption can, and often does, lead to fraud, wasteful spending and higher operational costs for government that you ultimately pay for personally. The costs are hard to quantify, but said to be significant. The state comptrollers office reports that over 215 arrests have been made and over $60 million recovered.

Citizens need to sit up and pay close attention. Attend meetings, file Freedom of Information Act requests, look at government contracts, look at campaign contribution filings, demand transparency and ask for town hall-style meetings from your elected officials. If they’re not responsive, elect new officials.

Among the best remedies known to prevent and beat corrupt practices is keeping citizens informed and engaged.

It may be tempting to look the other way and give officials a pass. It’s certainly easier. But turning a blind eye on corruption only breeds malfeasance. It’s about the worst response there is. Corruption ultimately corrodes the fabric of society and undermines people’s trust in their political systems and leaders.

According to Transparency International, a global coalition against corruption, it can cost people freedom, health, money and sometimes even their lives.

As governments struggle with budget deficits and aim to address urgent issues, the prudent thing to do is hold government officials accountable. We can’t fall asleep at the wheel. We the people need to make a point to stay engaged and informed in the new year and demand good government on all levels.

The Jan. 15, 2020, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Public Hearing for their proposed federal fiscal year 2019 capital program of projects confirms there continues to be good news from Washington concerning real financial support. The Town of Huntington commuters will see some of the benefits.

The MTA receives over $1.4 billion annually from the Federal Transit Administration. These dollars are used to fund various capital improvement projects for NYC Transit subway and bus, Long Island Rail Road, Metro North Rail Road, MTA Bus and Capital Construction Company. Most federal transportation grants require a 20 percent hard-cash local

share. FTA accepted toll credits instead of hard cash for the local share. This saved the MTA over $1 billion in the previous $32 billion 2015-19 five-year capital program. The MTA will save $1.6 billion under the $51 billion 2020-24 five-year capital program when applying for $8 billion in future FTA funding.

Washington has made available over $1.4 billion in 2019 FTA formula funding for the MTA. This helps pay for a significant portion of its capital program. This includes $28 million in Buses and Bus Facilities; $793 million in Section 5337 State of Good Repair and $672 million in Section 5307 Urbanized Area federal funding. There are other opportunities for up to several

hundred million more in discretionary competitive federal grants.

The MTA can also take advantage of FTA pre-award authority prior to grant approval. Use of pre-award authority affords the MTA an opportunity to start projects months earlier and incur costs for reimbursement at a later date after grant approval and obligation of funding.

The MTA currently manages an active portfolio of federally funded capital improvement projects and programs in open grants worth over $12 billion in direct FTA financial assistance.

Condemn Anti-Semitism Hanukkah 2019 will be remembered for a sick amount of violent antiSemitic attacks in and around New York City, attacks that were fueled by raw hate, feckless leadership, a culture of acceptance, lack of proper education and the promotion of anti-Semitism.

From colleges to Congress to Hanukkah parties and synagogues, anti-Semitism is on full display in many ugly forms. Simply because of their faith, we witnessed three innocent civilians slaughtered in a Kosher supermarket in Jersey City; five brutally stabbed celebrating Hanukkah at the home of a rabbi; and everyday Americans terrorized in the streets.

Unfortunately, while these attacks have shocked the nation and the world with their sheer brutality, last month’s anti-Semitic crimes are nothing new for today’s Jewish-American community. In fact, the New York Police Department has reported 229 anti-Semitic incidents in New York City in 2019 alone, making anti-Semitic attacks the most commonly reported hate crime comprising 54 percent of all those reported.

There are a variety of initiatives that all should support. Just a few of the many available options include education for those who desperately need it, greater security at places of worship and ensuring our communities’ law enforcement officers have the resources and support they need to safely and effectively

confront the threat. Every elected official and community leader must embrace all available options rather than just trying to identify one or two ways to help.

Unfortunately, some elected officials and community leaders have failed to step up and speak out at all.

It is important that each and every one of the perpetrators of last month’s attacks be brought to justice. Albany should also reverse course on its new cashless bail law, which included cashless bail for hate crime assaults. I was taken aback by reporting that a woman who was charged with assaulting and cursing at three Orthodox women in Brooklyn was set free under this new law. A day later, she was charged again with punching a woman in front of the victim’s children and shockingly, once again, was released back onto our streets. We must crack down on those perpetrating these horrific attacks, but our community cannot be protected if those in our justice system who swore to protect it are handcuffed by these new cashless bail laws.

As a nation that opposes and condemns hatred in any form, America must root out anti-Semitism wherever it rears its ugly head. We must not embolden it or elevate it, or even tolerate this hatred, which is attempting to normalize itself in our society. Whether this bigotry is brazen or it is toxic anti-Semitism deceptively masked in subtle tropes, we

must eliminate it wherever it exists.

This is a reality that has plagued Jewish-Americans in every aspect of their lives. I have heard too many stories of college students, from coast-to-coast, on campuses all across America being targeted with blatant anti-Semitism in the name of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, also known as BDS. This movement, co-founded by someone who is an anti-Semite, has turned countless innocent students into targets of attacks due to their Jewish faith.

In July, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.Res.246, a powerful statement opposing the BDS movement. However, we must do more than make a statement. We must enact legislation with teeth that combats this movement and the hatred it perpetuates against Israel and the Jewish community at home and around the world.

From Congress to the state house to the school board, all elected and community leaders need to step up to confront and crush anti-Semitism and end this persistent threat against JewishAmericans. While Hanukkah 2019 will forever be stained by brutal anti-Semitic attacks, we must ensure that Hanukkah 2020 and every year to come looks nothing like it.

‘Come from Away’ Offers Relevant Perspective for Today

ou know those thought bubbles artists draw in cartoons, where the reader can see what each character is thinking even as the person might be saying something like, “Bless your heart”?

I tried to imagine possessing that real-life talent when I recently attended the show, “Come from Away.”

The musical, which debuted close to seven D. None years ago, offers a retelling of the of the above story of people

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF diverted on their planes on 9/11 to the small town of Gander on the island of Newfoundland in Canada.

The local folks, with their indigenous

accents, offer support for the sudden influx of thousands of people from all over the world who are stuck in a place where they can’t get to their clothes, pets or toothbrushes.

The world changed dramatically on that day, as people on those redirected planes gained an almost immediate perspective on the inconvenience of their experience compared to the tragedy other families endured.

The people from Gander were incredibly hospitable and heroic, stepping outside their own needs to welcome and support the collection of people trapped with them for an indeterminate period of time.

While I don’t want to spoil the story — and please stop reading if you’d like to experience the show without any specific expectations — the musical also addressed one of the crueler elements that arose in the aftermath of that awful day: Some Americans developed a fear of Muslims.

One of the Muslim men stuck in Gander immediately drew suspicion from his fellow passengers. What, they wanted to know, was

he doing and was he a threat to them?

In the days, weeks and months that followed those despicable attacks, many Americans developed an unfounded fear of all Muslims, just as people became distrustful of Japanese-Americans after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

One of the reasons I wished I had a thought bubble as I watched the show was to see and appreciate what the other members of the audience recalled in their own lives.

Indeed, for me, the toughest part of the beginning of the show was immersing myself in the story. While I recognized that I was hearing about the experiences of people in a faraway place, I kept recalling the day when my then 3-month-old daughter seemed to sense our panic, fear and sadness, refusing to sleep or even allow us to put her down.

I also thought about the friends and professional contacts who got up, went to work and never returned to their families that day.

And now, several days after attending the show, I see that President Donald Trump (R)

has decided to attack two of his favorite Democratic targets by retweeting images of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York as Muslims, standing in front of an Iranian flag.

The suggestion, perhaps, is that they must be terrorists or be standing with the cruel regime in Iran if they don’t immediately support a president whose explanation for his own recent actions in Iran seems to change by the day.

Moving away from his world view, however, I feel as if we’re still fighting an irrational battle where one group — Muslims — is considered dangerous to “our way of life.” Do we really believe that any one religion could be eager to destroy us? Can we casually allow anti-Muslim fears to return?

Surely, we must have learned something in the last 18 years? The enemy doesn’t wear one set of clothing or practice one religion. We don’t have to wait for tragedy or for extraordinary circumstances to rise to the moment, the way the residents of Gander did.

Wow! Sounds like trying to be a little bit pregnant.

Why are we so interested in this? Could it be that over the 20th century, the royals have become human? Perhaps they might be viewed as a proxy family for us all. Who doesn’t have a ne’erdo-well uncle in their midst? Or trouble with an in-law? And certainly surprise at a rebellious child who isn’t following in the family footsteps?

The first to go rogue was Edward VIII, who famously gave up his throne for “the woman I love”: Wallis Simpson, an American socialite divorcée from Baltimore. The rules were still strict then. To withdraw was to leave, and that was that.

Then came Princess Margaret, whose love for a married commoner, Peter Townsend, was not permitted to proceed, but she retaliated by dancing out of the base paths the rest of her life.

Despite Queen Elizabeth II’s stalwart traditional life, her children did not follow suit, especially Charles, Prince of Wales, and Prince Andrew, Duke of York. After Charles’ wife, Princess Diana, opened a huge window into the workings of the royal machinery and then trag-

ically died, Charles was able to properly unite with Camilla Parker Bowles and life seemed to quiet down at the palace.

Then along came the next generation, and rules had relaxed so far that Kate Middleton — whose parents were merely business owners — had met Prince William as students at St. Andrews University in Scotland. She was accepted and ultimately welcomed into the Windsor dynasty with a splendid wedding.

Rules and tradition relaxed so far further that Harry was allowed to marry previously wed, biracial American actress Meghan Markle.

And now this. It is a wonder that the queen, at age 93, is still upright. She must surely be uptight. The House of Windsor has gone, in her one lifetime thus far, from an image of rigid control to having its laundry washed in public.

Conversations are going like this. Some are scolding the royal couple for asserting — or at least trying to assert their freedom and appearing to defy the queen. Others are commenting on alleged racism in Britain, as evidenced by racist treatment Meghan has received at the hands of the British press and other members

of the upper echelons. Apparently a BBC host “compared the couple’s newborn baby [Archie] to a chimpanzee,” according to an article in The New York Times this past Sunday.

Still others would have liked to see the couple work from inside the family and its institutions to improve race relations in Britain much the same way the royal family inspired the courage of the British people during World War II. For my part, I am frankly delighted to hear and read about something other than “the week the world stood still,” as we waited for Iran’s reaction to the killing of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani and the extreme partisan reaction that followed. And trying to follow the demonstrations in the streets by irate masses across the globe need constantly updated scorecards. It is a positive relief to follow the trials and tribulations of the royal family, however brief the respite. This is not to say I am unsympathetic to parts of their saga. In fact, we all deal with family uprisings and can identify in such matters even as we are made proud by other actions family members take.

Or maybe I am just addicted from having watched too much “Downton Abbey.”
