TOWN St. George calls for supporters to back Edwards

By Sara-Megan WalSh sara@tbrnewspapers.com Huntington Democrats are looking to heal a party rift by working together to push towards securing the town supervisor seat up for grabs this November.

Centerport resident Darryl St. George has put out a call for his followers to support Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) in her campaign for Huntington Town Supervisor.

Edwards beat St. George in the Sept. 12 primary, 3,482 votes to 1,664 votes, to win the Democrat line in the general election.

The political hopeful said he was initially disappointed by his loss but with time to reflect has put it in perspective. ””It was the first primary for a Democratic town supervisor and 1,600 people came out to vote for us,” St. George said. “It was still a loss, but it was a win in that sense. We got that many people to come out and be involved in the process.”

St. George said he has sat down with Edwards to talk over the key issues that came up in the primaries and their campaign platforms. They were able to find some common ground, according to the challenger, who said they were in agreement on the need for term limits for elected officials, campaign finance reform, a comprehensive review of the town’s master plan with environmental

considerations, and aggressively attacking the problem of heroin/opiate addiction.

“I am able to go back to my supporters and say, ‘This is the candidate we need to get behind,’” St. George said. “In my view, I will do everything I can to help her win as I believe she is the best person for the job in this race right now.”

Edwards will face competition from

Both Democrats agreed that the voter turnout for the Sept. 12 primary was disappointing. There were only 5,000 registered Democrats who cast their ballot for town supervisor candidate out of the more than 50,000 party members registered to vote in the Town of Huntington.

“A long-term project for me as a veteran and a history teacher is to do everything I can to get more people involved in the political process,” St. George said. “We can’t continue to accept low voter turnout as a reality.”

The Northport High School teacher said

he hopes to hold a meeting with young leaders sometime in October to discuss what role they play in the politics, how they can get more involved and have a voice in local issues.

His strong belief that active participation is key to the democratic process is part of what inspired St. George to get involved in politics. He first contemplated running for a seat on Huntington town board in 2015, before declaring in February 2017 he would be launching a campaign for town supervisor — months before Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) announced he would not be seeking re-election.

St. George’s decision spurred what will be remembered, at least by many voters, as the first Democratic primary for Huntington Town Supervisor.

“I have a profound sense of gratitude for all the people that came out and participated in this historic event in the town, which includes Tracey’s supporters,” the political hopeful said. “But a special thank you to my supporters, I’ve come to see them as an extended family.”

While St. George said he did not have any specific plans for the future, residents may still see and hear his name.

“I’m not going anywhere. I will continue to stay involved and do what I can to fight for what I believe in,” he said.

TOWN Elwood spray park to remember slain NYPD Sgt.

By Sara-Megan WalSh sara@tbrnewspapers.com Elwood residents are looking forward to having a new spray park to play in next summer being built in memory of a slain New York City police sergeant.

Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) and the town board unveiled plans Sept. 25 for the town’s first interactive water playground to be constructed at Elwood Park in memory of a Huntington resident Paul Tuozzolo, who was killed in the line of duty.

The spray park came about after lengthy conversations between town officials and Tuozzolo’s wife, Lisa, to build a memorial that would be meaningful to the couple’s two children.

“We, of course, are saddened by the tragic incident that cost Paul his life,” Petrone said. “We hope that this spray park will be a place where Austin and Joseph can come and relive their fond memories of their dad and know that all of us will remember the sacrifice he made while trying to keep us safe.”

Tuozzolo, 41, was working for the 43rd Precinct in the Soundview section of the Bronx last November when he was shot and killed responding to what was reported as a home invasion, but later turned out to be domestic incident. A dispatcher told responding officers that a man who had broken into a home was fleeing in a car, which Tuozzolo swiftly tracked down.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the suspect opened fire and shot Tuozzolo who died of his injuries.

“We have a phrase in the NYPD that we ‘never forget,’” said Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen, commanding officer of the Patrol Borough Bronx who spoke for the NYPD. “We never for— get the members of our department who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It is something very sacred to us as members of the NYPD … It is also important that people outside of the NYPD understand what kind of man, what kind of officer Sgt. Tuozzolo was.”

During his 19 years of service, Tuozzolo held various positions including a union representative for the Sergeants Benevo-

lent Association and later on worked in the school unit ensuring safety and well-being of Bronx students, according to Nikunen.

Tuozzolo was known as a “laidback, easy-going sergeant who cared for his cops” whose passion for children was evident in both his work and his family life, according to his wife.

“The two most important children in his life were his sons, Austin and Joseph, and the moment he walked through the doorway upon Tom Suozzi returning from work, our home lit up as bright as the sun from the smiles on everyone’s faces,” Lisa said.

“Today’s dedication is a fitting tribute to the devotion he had toward his children and I know that he is smiling down with great pride, knowing that his boys will have laughter and smiles at this spray park.”

“We need to tell the story for the future, that Sgt. Tuozzolo is a hero,” said U.S. Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D-Glen Cove). “This park is being named after him because he is a hero, and we hold up heros as people who we want to emulate, people who have made a sacrifice on our behalf to make our lives better.”

Suozzi presented Lisa and her sons with a flag from U.S. Congress in Tuozzolo’s memory.

Over the upcoming months, Petrone said the town will continue to work with the Tuozzolo family to finish designing the spray park with construction set to begin in March 2018. The preliminary estimated cost for the project is $450,000 which will come from money paid by the developer of The Seasons at Elwood as part of the community benefits agreement and in part from the town’s park improvement fund.

Kindergartners from Austin’s class at Harley Avenue Elementary School helped town officials ceremoniously break ground on the spray park. Tuozzolo’s wife had a special mission for each student.

“A hero is someone who care about others. A hero is someone who does things for others. I have a job for each and every one of you. Who thinks they can handle that job?”, Lisa asked, watching small hands raise into the air. “The job I’m about to give you is to be a hero just like Austin and Joseph’s daddy was.”

The spray park will be the first of two slated for construction by Huntington officials in 2018, with a second to be built alongside the upcoming James Conte Community Center in Huntington Station.

A 26-year-old man from Centerport was found to be burning marijuana in public view on the corner of Dix Hills Road and Hren Court in Dix Hills at around 6:15 p.m. Sept. 21, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Police said a 25-year-old man from Huntington was burning marijuana on the corner of Lafayette Street and Broadway in Huntington Sept. 20 at around 8 p.m. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

A 23-year-old man from Wheatley Heights was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima with a suspended license down Bagatelle Road in Dix Hills at around 1:10 p.m. Sept. 19, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

During a visit to Bottles & Cases — a wine and liquor store on East Main Street in Huntington — a 58-year-old woman from Greenlawn stole a bottle of tequila at around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 20, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Drug busts

Police said, at around 10:10 p.m. Sept. 21, a 27-year-old woman from Bay Shore had cannabis oil in her possession during a traffic stop on Rose Place in Huntington. She was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

During a traffic stop inside a 2001 Pontiac, a 23-year-old man from East Northport was found to be in possession of cocaine at around 12:42 a.m. Sept. 17, police said.

He was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.

Broken pots

Three flower pots were broken outside a home on Homesite Court in Elwood at around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20, police said.

Shoplifter in South Huntington

An unknown person stole various computer routers from Target on East Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington at around 12 p.m.

According to police, at around 3:45 p.m.

Sept. 18, a 20-year-old man from Huntington Station entered a home on Madison Street in Huntington and stole a shotgun, pills, a model airplane, cash, an Apple computer, watches and other assorted items. He was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary.

Car crimes

An unknown person stole charging cords and cash from a 2016 Porsche parked outside a residence on Bona Court in Huntington Station Sept. 22 at around 10 a.m., according to police.

Sunglasses and cash were stolen from inside a 2013 Chevy Suburban parked on Michael Lane in Huntington Station at around 10:30 a.m. Sept. 22, police said.

At around 6 p.m. Sept. 21, an unknown person stole a diamond necklace, earrings, a Garmin GPS and coins from a 2008 Jeep Liberty parked on Michael Lane in Huntington Station, according to police.

Missing tires

At around 4:15 a.m. Sept. 20, an unknown person stole 20 tires from cars in the parking lot of Huntington Toyota on Dix Hills Road in Huntington Station, police said.

Huntington supports NYS lawsuit against EPA dumping a panoramic view of the long Island Sound.

Huntington officials have added their voices to the growing outcry against the federal government’s plans to continue dumping in the Long Island Sound.

Huntington’s Town Board voted unanimously at their Sept. 19 meeting to show their support for a lawsuit filed last month by New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) against the United States Environmental Protection Agency regarding the open dumping of dredged material in Long Island Sound.

“I think it’s important that we protect the Long Island Sound, it’s as cut and dry as that,” said Councilwoman Susan Berland (D), who co-sponsored the action. “It’s a vital aspect of tourism. It’s part and parcel of who we are with our fishing and boating communities. It’s our job to protect those waters.”

The state’s lawsuit, which was filed Aug. 17, alleges the Long Island Sound Dredged Material Management Plan approved by the EPA violates the Ocean Dumping Act and Coastal Zone Management Act, and also cites a “failure to address environmental impacts on the Long Island Sound.”

The Ocean Dumping Act was extended in 1980 to include protection for the Long Island Sound under the Ambro Amendment, which was sponsored by former U.S. Rep. and former Huntington Town Supervisor Jerome Ambro.

In 2016, the EPA increased the number of open water dumping sites in the Sound from two to three, despite a call from state government leaders of both New York and Connecticut in 2005 to reduce and eventually eliminate the practice of dumping in the Sound. According to the lawsuit, the dumping is also inconsistent with several investments of taxpayer dollars and policies that have sought to clean up the vital Long Island waterway.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) opposed the additional dumping site in late 2016. Berland and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) co-sponsored the resolution for the town to support the state’s lawsuit.

“The federal government’s plan to allow the dumping of tens of millions of cubic yards of dredged material in this new location smacks against all efforts to enhance the health of the Long Island Sound,” Cuthbertson said. “Huntington and other local governments across Long Island have made great process over the years in enacting legislation and implementing programs to safeguard this vital estuary. This plan by the EPA must be scrapped.”

To show its support, the town will send out letters to Cuomo, the attorney general, the EPA and New York state senators and congressmembers opposing the dumping.

The letter states that Huntington Town “has for decades been a steadfast advocate for the protection of the Long Island Sound” and cites its agreement that “the EPA’s designation of the Eastern LI Sound site was arbitrary, capricious and an abuse of discretion or otherwise not in accordance with the law.”

Huntington is the second township on Long Island to voice its opposition to the dumping plan, following an Aug. 28 announcement by Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R).

Though a spokesperson for the EPA declined via email to comment on ongoing litigation, an April 2016 statement from the agency spelled out the motivation for con-

Suffolk legislature votes to approve heroin, opiate panel

6, the members passed Introductory Resolution 1664 to create a panel that will provide ongoing guidance and input to the county in combating the opioid issue. The panel will take an interdisciplinary approach by focusing on preventative education, enhancement of law enforcement efforts, and aiding in treatment and rehabilitation.

“A coordinated, continuous and interdisciplinary approach is needed to fully address the epidemic and implement sustainable change,” Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said.

The ever-evolving nature of the opiate problems within the county will be addressed by a panel that will include members of the county Legislature — Anker, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville), Chair of the Public Safety Committee Kate Browning (D-Shirley), Chair of the Education and Human Services Committee Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) and Chair of the Health Committee William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport). The panel will also include representatives from the police department, sheriff’s department and department of health, as well as local rehabilitation providers, advocacy groups, hospitals and the county superintendents’ association.

Police Commissioner Tim Sini (D), who is on the panel, said it is a positive piece of legislation.

“We are seeing this overdose epidemic develop from pills to heroin to the leading cause in Suffolk County, now Fentanyl,” Sini said. “Suffolk has not been spared.

There have been recommendations made for previous panels at the state and county level — some have been adopted, and this allows us a forum to make additional recommendations and visit previous ones to be implemented and fine-tuned.”

He has some of his own ideas he will bring to the table.

“We need to invest in prevention and ways to keep people sober,” Sini said. “We opened the first recovery center — THRIVE — but we need more, and maybe even recovery high schools, to provide an environment that fosters support, especially when there’s the errors insurance companies [make] treating addiction.”

The police commissioner said he likes that there is a wide array of those in support of, and providing input on the panel.

“You need all the stakeholders at the table,” he said. “This isn’t just a public safety issue, it’s first and foremost a public health issue.”

An intervention program has already been put in place by the police department recently, to help put people in touch with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence.

“When a police officer or detective comes into contact with intelligence for someone who needs substance abuse treatment, we will directly contact LICADD to get that person treatment,” he said. “We’re not just arresting drug dealers, but also connecting people to much-needed treatment.”

It is anticipated that the advisory panel will meet for the first time at the beginning of October. Following the first meeting, the group will meet quarterly and will provide regular reports to the appropriate county committees, and all meetings will be open to the public. To aid in the efforts, the panel will conduct a minimum of two formal public hearings annually to acquire necessary information and data to assist it in developing further recommendations.

Trotta says red-light camera stats are being manipulated Newest report omits accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (RFort Salonga) is calling for an investigation into the county’s annual Red Light Safety Program report, which he said has both purposefully and illegally eliminated data involving car accidentswithpedestrians Page A26 and bicyclists.

Trotta stood with fellow legislators and colleagues Sept. 21 at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road in Miller Place to address his ongoing concerns with a lack of available statistics surrounding accidents, injuries and deaths due to the county’s red-light camera program, highlighting a conversation he had last month with a traffic engineer of Nelson & Pope, the company that prepares the annual reports.

According to Trotta, the traffic engineer advised him that the company was instructed not to include the pedestrianand bicycle-involved accidents at red-light camera locations in reports in order to paint a better picture of the program. The reports are submitted to the state and made available to the public. The most recent report was released earlier this year and highlighted statistics for 2016. While pedestrian- and bicycle-involved accidents have been reported in a scattered few reports since the program began in 2010, the data has not been included in the last two years’ reports.

tion of the state’s motor vehicle and traffic law, which states the mandatory annual report must include the number, type and severity of all accidents reported at these intersections with traffic control devices.

He also said it is not clear who is behind the data exclusion — the county or the company behind the red-light camera program. Trotta urged the state attorney general to get involved and hold the guilty party accountable.

“How can anybody adequately look at the positive or negative features of a program when they’re not getting all the data?”

Trotta said during the press conference.

The legislator has long been opposed to the program, which he said he believes is the cause of an uptick in accidents throughout the area and is merely a ticket and revenue-generating scam by the county.

“There are multiple reasons why this program should be shut down immediately and I’m aghast by the fact that we’re doing nothing and we are lying to the public by not including the pedestrians and the bicyclists. When found out about this, I — Rob Trotta Icouldn’t believe it.”

Trotta was joined by legislators Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) and Tom Muratore (R-Selden), as well as county Legislature candidate Gary Pollakusky (R), at the busy intersection where two teenagers have died after being struck by cars, which features red-light cameras.

“We lost a child here on a bicycle and a child here as a pedestrian,” Trotta said, referring to 14-year-old Nico Signore who died earlier this year, and 16-year-old John Luke, who died in 2015. “But I guess that

Pollakusky said he supports the suspension of the red-light camera program due to its negative impact on public safety.

“The red-light camera program is a money grab by [County Executive Steve Bellone (D)] and the Democrats in the Legislature and has been sold to the public as a public safety program — it is anything but safe,” Pollakusky said, stressing that accidents have increased after the red-light cameras were installed.

He also took issue with his opponent, Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), who initially voted against the program but has since come to agree with its mission of

changing poor traffic. “[She] is famous for saying, ‘If it saves one child’s life,’ it’s worth it [but] this program that you and your cohorts support, Mrs. Anker, has hurt innocent drivers, pedestrians and children alike,” Pollakusky said.

Personal injury lawyer David Raimondo, based in Lake Grove, represents the Luke family and pointed to an omission of data, including fatalities of pedestrians in auto accidents, in a presentation before the county Legislature in 2014 that led to the red-light camera program’s renewal.

“It’s up for renewal in 2019 and if we don’t have the proper data before the Legislature, it will continue to be renewed and we cannot let that happen,” Raimondo said.

“It’s very important this program come to an end, it be suspended and that the suffering of the taxpayers of Suffolk County — both financially and physically — end.”

Out of those students, seven have also been selected for the NYSSMA All-State festival.

NYSCAME All-County is extremely selective, selecting only those 11th and 12th-grade musicians ranked with the highest NYSSMA scores across Suffolk County. Selected students will take part in three intensive rehears-

al sessions that culminate in a concert on Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m. at Hauppauge High School.

NYSSMA All-State is based on NYSSMA scores and how those scores compare to other students at the same level across the entire state. The seven students who were selected as All-State musicians will travel to Rochester from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 to participate in intensive rehearsals, culminating in weekend concerts at the Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

Harborfields High School recently announced that senior Emma Johnston was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program.

In order to be eligible for this achievement, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test, which 1.6 million students take each year. Johnston took the test last October and her score placed

To compete for one of the final 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, students must score well on the upcoming SAT and continue their dedication to academic excellence.

Northport High School announced in September that student Julianne Starzee was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Eaton’s Neck firefighters prove age doesn’t matter Eaton’s Neck firefighters were in the right place at the right time in order to be the saving grace of a distressed driver.

The Eaton’s Neck Fire Department’s octogenarian volunteer crew extinguished a car blaze on the Long Island Expressway in the nick of time Sept. 20.

Fire department volunteers were driving Engine 7 to the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank for routine pump testing in rushhour traffic when an automobile went up in flames on the side of the road, according to fire department spokesman Steve Silverman.

The car’s engine compartment was engulfed in fire, Silverman said, sending out heavy, black smoke that obscured the right-hand lane.

Suffolk County police officers responding to the scene motioned the Eaton Neck’s firetruck over to the side of the road to assist with the burning vehicle, according to Silverman. They immediately set to work utilizing water from the onboard booster tank.

Firefighter Richard Baer, 81, and Arthur Angst, 81, the ex-chief and engineering officer, got to work operating the water pump with assistance from the Fire Police Lieutenant Richard Deters, 77. The crew was able to extinguish the flames.

Ronkonkoma Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after the fire was extinguished, according to Silverman, and helped repack the hose.

By Bill landon All the Huntington boys soccer team needed to do was change its offensive strategy after a scoreless first 40 minutes of play to top Copiague, 2-0, on the road Sept. 26, to remain undefeated in League III. “You know this is a really good league, and quite honestly, we’ve been lucky in some instances,” Huntington head coach John Pagano said. “We’ve had close games, one-goal games, and any game, even against a team like Copiague [that hasn’t won yet] but are wellcoached, we know that we could’ve fallen.”

Copiague spent most of the first half up field, pressing but managing just two shots on goal. Huntington senior goalkeeper Nat Amato was up for the challenge, and made a pair of pedestrian saves to keep Copiague off the board.

Copiague’s goalkeeper returned the favor on the other side, stopping Freddy Amador’s shot after the senior midfielder slipped past a defender on a pass from the middle and fired a shot to the left corner.

Luis Ortiz broke the ice for the Blue Devils in the second half, scoring off a pass from the crowd in front of the Copiague cage at the 29-minute mark.

The score changed the tempo of the second half, and Huntington took advantage — spreading out the offense to look for cross opportunities.

“We pressed more in the second half,” Pagano said. “[Copiague was] laying back with an extra defender, and that made it difficult for us. Once we shifted and stretched them out a little bit it gave us a little bit more passing and running space.”

Opportunity found sophomore forward Carlos Reyes soon after, when he drove in a rebound shot for insurance just over five minutes later.

“It began with the defense and it built from there,” Reyes said of the play. “I thought he was going to cross it in from the far post but once I saw it start to curve in and then it got past the defender, I was able to get it.”

With the win, Huntington improves to 6-0. Five of the Blue Devil’s wins were one-goal games.

“Our strikers are really fast,” Amador said. “[Copiague is] a really good team. They played really hard for every 50-50 ball, so we have to step up and play hard in every game.”

Huntington is back in action Sept. 28 when the team travels to Smithtown West (4-2) for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Edwards is best candidate for supervisor

Risk and reward Suffolk County residents deserve full disclosure of the total number of fatal accidents occurring at intersections with red-light cameras.

Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) was joined by legislators Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) and Tom Muratore (R-Selden) in calling for an investigation into the county’s most recently released Red Light Safety Program report. Trotta claimed the county’s report fails to include any accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists in its statistics in order to paint a better picture of the program, a fact that was confirmed by the traffic engineer Nelson & Pope.

Since the program’s start in July 2010, the county has installed more than 216 red-light cameras aimed at “enhancing the safety of motorists,” according to the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violation Agency on the Suffolk County website. These automated cameras resulted in more than 415,000 traffic citations being issued to drivers in 2016, generating nearly $31 million in revenue for the county. With a current budget deficit, these funds undoubtedly go a long way toward filling the shortfall.

The real question is whether the ever-increasing number of red-light cameras and resulting tickets has increased the safety of our local roadways. Trotta pointed to a recent study that shows an increasing number of accidents at 46 of 100 intersections with cameras installed — and at 32 of those locations there has been a more than 100 percent increase.

We wonder what these statistics would look like if adjusted to include those omitted accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Under New York State law, a driver is required to contact police and file an accident report for all cases where a person is either killed or injured within 10 days.

The data needed to fully evaluate the Red Light Safety Program is available and can be obtained from the state. But elected officials are not making the information public for us to read and make an informed opinion as to whether the red-light cameras are having the intended effect — increasing the safety of our local roads.

New York is one of 24 states across the country that allows red-light camera use to enforce speed and traffic laws, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit that represents states and agencies aiming to address behavioral highway issues to decrease the number of accident-related deaths.

As Suffolk County’s red-light program comes up for renewal in 2019, and motions have been made to temporarily suspend it, taxpayers deserve to have all the facts presented. We have the right to know if it’s working before paying another fine or whether lives are being put at unnecessary risk for profit.

These past six months we have worked tirelessly to ensure that there be an unfettered democratic process in Huntington.

We achieved our goal: the first Democratic primary for supervisor. Following our efforts to get on the ballot we ran an honest and civil campaign drawing attention to the central issues confronting our community while at the same time hearing from our neighbors and getting a better grasp of what was important to the people: the environment, public safety, and democratic reforms.

Throughout the months leading up to the primary, we began to develop thoughtful positions on these issues, our base of support continued to grow and with it, we began a local movement dedicated to change in our town and beyond.

The most inspiring and encouraging aspect of the campaign is that it led to a political awakening involving residents from all walks of life: veterans, teachers, lawyers, homemakers, writers, doctors, students, business leaders and civic activists. Individuals who would

have otherwise had no interest and no involvement with politics — especially at the local level — suddenly became actively and passionately engaged.

I was both humbled and awed to have the privilege and honor to lead this diverse fellowship committed to such a noble and lofty cause. This primary was the beginning of a much larger and necessary campaign directed at working to cultivate an active and engaged citizenry. While we acknowledge with profound gratitude the thousands of residents that came out to vote, we must also understand that we have far more work to do in addressing the perennial problem of low voter turnout. Robust political involvement is a necessary requisite for a healthy democratic republic.

The long-term goal must be to continue the political awakening of engaging more Americans in the democratic process.

In the spirit of unity and the best interests of our town, Councilwoman Tracey Edwards and I met over the weekend to discuss key issues that were central during the

primary. I am pleased to report that we were able to find common ground on term limits, campaign finance reform, cultivating greater political involvement amongst the citizenry, a comprehensive review of the town’s master plan balancing growth with environmental considerations and working to aggressively combat the heroin/ opioid epidemic.

After reflecting over the last week and having had the time to sit down and discuss at length all of the above with Councilwoman Edwards, I am absolutely convinced that Ms. Edwards is by far the best person in the race for town supervisor to lead Huntington down the right path to a bright and vibrant future. I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy and I will work tirelessly over the next six weeks to ensure her victory. I ask all my supporters to join me in this effort.

I think Tracey Edwards will be a great town supervisor.

Let’s prove that we are a united nation Why isn’t our federal government mobilizing the military and corporate forces that are readily at our disposal to begin to rebuild Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the way we rebuilt Europe after World War II? Step 1: Use our military’s engineering and transport capabilities to open up airfields and ports so they can bring in life-sustaining supplies.

Step 2: Insist that all “debt” be temporarily suspended by

the huge corporate financial institutions that have interest in seeing Puerto Rico recover as soon as possible.

Step 3: Bring in temporary military hospitals and personnel from the armed services and the National Guard to assist with stabilizing health care and restoring basic infrastructure and shelter reconstruction.

The cost of such an intervention would be far less in the long run than allowing things to

continue to deteriorate. It could be quick and decisive and be a model of public/private partnership that we will undoubtedly continue to need into the future.

Most of all, it would be a model of American compassion and collaboration that would signal to all the world that we are still a great and united nation.

An open letter to the NFL Dear Commissioner Goodell: As one of many football fans who is extremely upset by political acts disrespecting our flag and national anthem, I seriously ask you to consider putting a stop to this behavior.

You say you want unity, but how can there be unity on the field when millionaire players attack the symbols of American unity?

Can you blame them? They know about 9/11, as they should.

When they’re not sending pictures of themselves and the food they’re eating to their group of best friends through social media, they read headlines and see pictures of people, just like them, who are living their lives one day and then becoming statistics the next.

This particular generation says it would pick security over freedom.

Not all of them do, of course,

That is a reflection of just how much the world has changed since I grew up.

In my youth, I was aware of the Cold War. A nuclear war, although a possibil-

ity in the bilateral world that pitted the United States against the Soviet Union, seemed unlikely. After all, the biggest deterrent was the likelihood of mutually assured destruction. As Matthew Broderick experienced in the movie “War Games,” no one wins or, to quote the eerie computer from the movie, “the only winning move is not to play.”

In times of stress, Americans have historically pulled away from the ideals of freedom and democracy.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus, which ensures that someone can challenge an unlawful detention or imprisonment. During World War II, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established internment camps, where he held more than 100,000 people of Japanese decent, worried that they might be colluding with a government that had just attacked us.

At the start of the Cold War, Sen. Joseph McCarthy played into our worst fears, leading the House Un-American Activities Committee to question the

beliefs and loyalties of its citizens. In the meantime, he ruined the lives of thousands of people and turned Americans against each other.

Many of these pursuits were designed to ease the minds of citizens about our friends and neighbors, some of whom might be working with an enemy and strike against us.

So, today, what are we willing to give up? And, perhaps more importantly, to whom are we surrendering these freedoms?

I recently watched a television reporter who was interviewing citizens in North Korea. He was asking them how they felt about their leader, Kim Jung-un, and the way he was rattling the saber against the United States and the rest of the world.

Not surprisingly, the North Koreans, or the translator with them, expressed unreserved support for the man who trades threats seemingly on a daily basis with President Donald Trump.

Those interviewed were confident they were in good hands.

I doubt they felt comfortable expressing any other view. What

consequences would they suffer if they publicly questioned their leader’s judgment? Their leader doesn’t seem receptive to opposing viewpoints.

On our shores, we can question our own leaders openly and frequently. We can gather in groups and protest.

Trump can bristle at the way the leftleaning press covers him, just as President Barack Obama shared his displeasure over the coverage from Fox News during his presidency, but presidents can’t shut down these organizations.

Early in our country’s history, our Founding Fathers, who had just emerged victorious in a costly battle with King George III of Great Britain and Ireland, didn’t want the leaders of the new nation to have unchecked power. The pioneering statesmen wanted to guarantee Americans protections from any government, domestic or international.

Every freedom we give up moves us further down a slippery slope.

For those of us who grew up before the fight against terrorism, freedom remains at the heart of the country we are protecting.

The horrors of the Vietnam War and a question of trust

atching the 10-part Ken Burns and Lynn Novick PBS TV series, “The Vietnam War,” brought us back to the terrible ’60s.

That decade began calmly enough; my husband had volunteered to be a physician in the service in 1963, through a little known program called the Berry Plan.

I was thrilled at the prospect that we would get to travel.

Four years later, the United States was immersed in a brutal war in a place called Vietnam, on the other side world.

My husband would put their faces back together and try to save their eyes. The war was only 24 hours away from us, and we lived always on edge. We were further aware of the dangers and horror of the war the pilots in particular faced, because we were housed in the middle of their section on the base.

Some served two and three tours, leaving their wives and children behind frantic with worry.

We returned home to New York City for a visit and were puzzled by the disconnect between the military and civilians. What was a desperate existence on the one hand was a seemingly unaffected population on the other. Democratic President Lyndon Johnson had promised the nation a life with guns and butter, and indeed that was what we saw. When we tried to tell friends what was going on, they seemed surprised, even annoyed by the fuss we were making. Stunned, we returned to base.

Which was the real world?

Then the domino effect theory, should Vietnam fall, began to be questioned. The gap between words and actions of government officials started

to emerge. We were the innocents, believing that our president would never lie to us. We became, thanks to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, caught up in a quantified body count to measure our successes. We wondered why it mattered how many of the enemy was killed if even one American died. Why were we there? The antiwar movement took hold, led by college students across America, labeled as communist-inspired and fiercely resisted by the Johnson administration.

Mourning and anti-war protests were tearing the country apart.

My husband and I left the military in 1969, years sooner than the fighting men left Vietnam.

And some five years ago, I returned to Vietnam on a tour to see the country and try to make sense of what had happened there. I was overwhelmed.

The weather was insufferably humid and hot, and I thought of the heavy backpacks the fighters had to carry as they moved through the jungle. The Vietnamese in the south, where our tour started, refer to the war as the American War in their museums and in conversation. Of course they do, I real-

ized. They were unfailingly kind to us, welcoming us and, I suppose, our hard currency. In the north, near Hanoi, the older citizens were coldly polite. Most of the population was born after the war but, for the most part, those young people never knew their fathers. They were killed. And the country? The country was beautiful, with its mountains, rice paddies and deltas, scenic and peaceful.

We had known nothing of the history of Vietnam before the nation entered the war. The Vietnamese people had struggled against Chinese occupation for more than 1,000 years, followed by the French. The Vietnamese weren’t ideological communists; they just wanted their homeland to be free. And the Chinese entered the war not to spread communism but to keep us from their borders.

We learned finally but it cost us more than 58,000 American lives, untold wounded and an unimaginable amount of money. Have we learned enough to apply the lessons to Afghanistan and Iraq and to North Korea? We have learned never again to regard our leaders with trust.
