The state champs The Northport High School varsity girls lacrosse team proudly flashed new hardware: their New York state championship rings Sept. 10. Upon receiving their rings, the studentathletes reminisced with their teammates over a “dominating” season. Having earned second place to Middle Country with a record of 13-1 in the regular Division I season, the team qualified for playoffs in May. In the opening round, the Tigers beat Commack, 15-5, and advanced to the semifinals where they beat Ward Melville, 13-7, to qualify for the Suffolk County championship. Northport won, 13-7, against Middle Country to earn the county title and proceeded to beat Farmingdale, 15-4, for the Long Island championship. Hard on the heels of these victories, the team dominated over Pittsford, 13-3, in the New York state semifinals, and defeated Baldwinsville, 10-8, in June to win their first state championship since 2011. The Tigers overall record was 21-1. “They dominated the competition,” Mark Dantuono, the district’s director of heath, physical education and athletics, said. Congratulations to the entire team, as well as head coach Carol Rainson-Rose, assistant coach Alton Rose, and volunteer assistant coaches Alexis Curcio and Cortney Fortunato.

SBU professor indicted for allegedly stealing thousands from research funds BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM An associate professor from Stony Brook University, who has been placed on administrative leave, is pleading not guilty to charges that he allegedly stole thousands from funds that were allocated for cancer research. The United States Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York, announced Sept. 12 that Geoffrey Girnun, an associate professor at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, had been arrested and indicted for stealing more than $200,000 in cancer research funds, allegedly using the stolen funds in part to pay his mortgage. One of Girnun’s attorneys, Steven Metcalf II of Metcalf & Metcalf P.C. in Manhattan, said in an email statement that he is asking that the public does not rush to judgment. “Mr. Girnun’s defense team, including attorney Steven Siegel and my firm, are still putting all the pieces together,” Metcalf wrote. “We will continue to challenge the validity of these charges and whether the facts are fundamentally flawed. Once all the smoke clears there will be a completely different picture of Mr. Girnun, who is a family man,

a loving husband and a Harvard-educated professional entirely devoted to his family and work.” SBU officials are shocked over the alleged actions. “The university is outraged and appalled by the allegations that led to the arrest of Geoffrey Girnun today,” an official statement from the university read. “This alleged behavior is absolutely contrary to the ethical and professional standards expected of our faculty. The university has fully cooperated with the investigation and at this time is considered by the FBI as a victim in this matter.” The professor was charged in a sevencount indictment with theft of state and federal government funds, wire fraud and money laundering. He allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices for research equipment to SBU from sham companies he created to conceal his theft of funds from cancer-related research grants issued by the National Institutes of Health and SBU. “Professor Girnun’s alleged theft of federal and state grant funds earmarked for cancer research can be explained in two words: pure greed,” said U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue in a statement. “He will now be held to account in a federal courtroom.”

Scott Lampert, special-agent-in-charge from the U.S. inspector general’s office,was in attendance when the charges were announced. “Taxpayers fund medical research with the hope that promising scientific breakthroughs will result in much-needed treatments and cures for patients,” Lampert said. “Because the money for medical research is limited and the need for scientific advances is great, it’s incredibly important to clamp down on those who would

steal such grant money for personal gain.” If convicted, Girnun faces up to 20 years imprisonment. Girnun was featured in a March 25, 2015, TBR News Media article. At the time, the researcher was exploring the role of different proteins that either promote or prevent various cancers. The one particular protein in the liver cell he was studying is one that classically regulates the cell cycle, according to the article. Girnun discovered that the protein promotes how the liver produces sugar, in the form of glucose, to feed organs such as the brain under normal conditions. In diabetic mice, the protein goes back to its classic role as a cell cycle regulator. Girnun made the move to SBU from the University of Maryland in 2013 and said at the time he was inspired by the opportunity to create something larger. “I want to build a program in cancer metabolism,” he said. “I want to build something beyond my own lab.” At the time of the 2015 article, Girnun was temporarily commuting from Maryland. The statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office now lists him as a resident of Woodmere. Girnun is scheduled to return to court Oct.4 after being released on $250,000 bond.

Great Cow Harbor Day weekend The Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary, one of Northport’s favorite destinations, has been in the neighborhood since the mid-1800s, when it was a working farm. Now a not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farm animals, the farm relies on the community for support. One hundred percent of animal care expenses, including hay, feed, bedding and veterinarian care is covered by private donations. On Saturday, Sept. 21, a herd of kindhearted athletes will be taking on The Great Cow Harbor 10k Run to benefit Annabelle the cow and the rest of the animals at the Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary in Northport. All registered participants of The Great Cow Harbor 10k Run, including those taking part in the family-friendly, 1-Mile Fun Run, are welcome and encouraged to join Team Annabelle & Friends. This is the third year running for Team Annabelle. One of the most rewarding parts of the event, according to event organizers, will be knowing that because of supporters efforts, Annabelle and her friends will have full bellies, clean, fluffy beds and

veterinarian care when needed. Support also means that everyone can continue to enjoy visiting the farm, one of Northport’s most treasured spots. All proceeds go to Friends of the Farm, Northport Inc. – the volunteer-based, 501(c) (3) responsible for the day-to-day animal care and upkeep of the barns and property and will be used to cover the animals’ feed, hay, bedding, veterinarian care and other related expenses. Since all of animal carerelated expenses are fully reliant on private donations, the farm needs as many people as possible to put their feet to the street and to join team Annabelle & Friends, or sponsor a team member by making a tax-deductible donation. On Sept. 11, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed into law S.5898, legislation to ensure parity in disability benefits coverage for 9/11 first responders. The law, originally introduced in May 2019 by New York State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport), will provide disability benefits coverage to civilian public employees who responded to Ground Zero and eliminates the disparity in coverage between uniformed and nonuniformed workers. State Department of Environmental Conservation employee Tim DeMeo, who had called himself one of the “forgotten responders,” said that he finally has peace of mind. He arrived at the scene on 9/11 just as the second plane struck and was injured by falling debris. His vehicle, he said, flipped over and was pancaked. For four months, he worked on removing hazardous waste from the site. Today the Glen Head resident suffers from respiratory ailments and has undergone multiple surgeries and continues to require more. “Eighteen years ago, I responded to Ground Zero alongside firefighters, police officers and others to the horrors unfolding at Ground Zero. Now today, we share many of the same health issues,” DeMeo said. “The new law will help ensure that my family’s future is secure.” The new law will establish public workers, such as transit employees and civil engineers, are eligible for the same 75 percent disability benefit coverage as those they worked side-by-side with in the post9/11 recovery. suffer from serious, terminal or debilitating medical conditions were previously unable to retire as a result of staggering medical costs. It took nine months to clean up Lower Manhattan, which was contaminated with toxic substances including dioxin, polychlorinated biphenyls, asbestos, pulverized cement, fiberglass and steel. In the years following cleanup, responders found themselves afflicted with respiratory problems, gastroesophageal diseases, onset asbestos-related musculoskeletal illnesses and cancers. Since they are not technically classified as uniformed employees, these

men and women previously lost out on significant disability benefits that could have helped them to avoid financial difficulties, Gaughran’s office stated in a press release. In the past, if workers were forced to retire because their medical condition prohibited them from working, most only received onethird pension benefit. Nesconset resident John Feal, president and founder of the FealGood Foundation,

said the law’s passage is long overdue. “I went to Washington to demand that our government fully fund the Victims Compensation Fund,” he said. “We won that fight. Now we are making real progress in our city and state on how we support our first responders who ran willingly into disaster on 9/11. Eighteen years later, we finally have guaranteed unlimited sick leave and easier access to disability benefits for 9/11 first responders, though it never should have taken so long.” Feal, a demolition supervisor, lost half of his left foot at Ground Zero when a falling steel beam crushed it. He thanks those who advocated tirelessly on behalf of their fellow first responders, as well as the elected officials who sponsored this legislation. State union Public Employees Federation President Wayne Spence shared the sentiment. “PEF is proud to support this law that corrects the injustice suffered by some state employees who were not given the same benefit as those with whom they worked alongside,” Spence said. “A person’s date of hire or bargaining unit should not determine the benefit they received for work they provided after the terrorist attacks.” The bill was also sponsored by Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Holliswood, Queens) and was supported by District Council 37 AFSCME, New York City’s largest municipal employee union. Gaughran has previously said at the close of the 2019 legislative session that the bill was one that he was most proud.

Tigers edge out Patriots, 5-4 BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With 18 minutes left in the game, Ward Melville’s ﬁeld hockey team retied the game at 4-all before Northport sophomore Shannon Smith scored the go-ahead goal two minutes later. It would prove to be just enough for the Tigers to edge the Patriots to win the game, 5-4, at home in a Division I matchup Sept 11. Northport’s scoring came from ﬁve different players. Along with Smith’s goal, senior Kate McLam rocked the box as did her younger sister, freshman Emma McLam.

Sophomores Anna Trizzino and Sophia Bica also helped stretch the net. Courtney Quinn, a senior, had a pair of goals for the Patriots while Amanda Lee and Isabella Paglia both put one in the back of the box. Slight against science When the National Institutes of Health funds scientific research, the government is investing in hope. The people with the purse strings believe the scientists have the potential for progress, whether from a fundamental discovery or a breakthrough translational finding. Work in these labs may save and extend the lives of our fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. On Sept. 12, a cancer scientist at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University was charged with seven counts of stealing state and federal funds, wire fraud and money laundering when he allegedly funneled more than $200,000 of his research money into his own pockets, in part to pay his mortgage. Taxpayers are a victim in this alleged fraud. Fellow scientists, who might have otherwise received the funds, are also greatly harmed, along with patients awaiting medical help and the support systems for all those patients. In other words, most of us — in one way or another — have been pickpocketed. So, what’s supposed to happen now? If Geoffrey Girnun is guilty — due process will determine that and he has pleaded not guilty — he will face prison time, fines and other punishments. Girnun allegedly was self-dealing his grant money into shell companies. Perhaps the system where potential conflicts of interest exist needs a closer look, both from funding agencies and from the university. It’s also crucial that SBU and the NIH pay especially close attention to this criminal case. They need to know all the details of this alleged fraud so they can monitor other scientists and make sure they close any gaps in the funding process. We, the taxpayers, need to be confident that the money the government invests goes toward the hunt for scientific discovery. What shouldn’t happen? The NIH shouldn’t turn off the tap for scientists at SBU or elsewhere, or create unrealistic hurdles, to receive funding or reimbursement. As it is, many researchers spend considerable time applying for funds and, once they receive them, justifying every penny. Slowing that process down would make them less productive, hurting their research and cutting back on their benefits to the whole of humanity. Scientific studies seek to understand cause and effect — actions and reactions. When doctors treat cancer patients, they try to balance between the need to eradicate cells with cancerous programming and the potential danger of collateral cellular damage to avoid wiping out healthy and productive cells. The treatment for this alleged fraud should do the same, trying to prevent other such corruption without shutting down valuable science. Protecting Long Island water quality Recently, I held an environmentally focused town hall in my district as an opportunity to hear what my constituents are concerned about. What emerged from the comments was a demand for clean and safe drinking water in Long Island. People expressed their fear of being faced with a water crisis caused by pollution. This past legislative session, we codified the constitutional right of all New Yorkers to clean air and water, and endowed the state with the duty to protect its citizens and New York’s natural resources. For Long Islanders, our most important and precious resource is our water, a necessity we just cannot live without. For 2.8 million Long Islanders, the sole source for clean, fresh drinking water is through groundwater accessed

from aquifers. Any potential contamination must be addressed swiftly and without hesitation. This is why the rise of emerging contaminants is so alarming for Long Islanders. Emerging contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane and perfluoroalkyls (PFAS) have been classified as contaminants by the EPA and identified as hazardous. However, their actual consequences have not yet been established because they do not break down easily and persist in water for a long time. Though the EPA has not established a maximum contamination level (MCL), New York State is working on implementing an MCL for 1,4-dioxane as 1 part per billion and 10 parts per trillion for PFAS. In light of federal inaction, it is the state’s obligation to take steps to protect its residents.

That’s why I wrote a law — recently passed by the Legislature — to empower public water authorities to hold polluters accountable for the costs of removing these contaminants from our water. This law ensures that our residents will have future recourse against the harmful, long-term effects as they emerge. The State of New York is also providing historic funding for water districts to invest in infrastructure to remove these contaminants from the water. These measures go far in commencing initiatives that will protect and conserve our water. However, there is still so much work to be done in the fight for clean water. In support of starting school later “Three Village school district parents say it’s time for a new start” was a fair and well-balanced article in the Sept. 12 The Village Times Herald, and I would like to thank TBR News Media for coverage of this topic. It is particularly helpful that Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich acknowledged the validity of the research on the effects of student sleep deprivation that has motivated this call for change. There are, however, some quotes attributed to the superintendent that could be interpreted as suggesting that the reform group is not considering the interests of students for whom sport is a primary concern or the interests of elementary students. First, many of the parents supporting the reform efforts have children in elementary school. These students have the most to gain from a change in secondary school start times since they would spend more years in a reformed system. Similarly, many parents supporting reform have children who

are active in multiple sports. Research shows that later start times enhance physical performance as well as academic performance, reducing injury rates and improving outcomes. There is absolutely no inherent conflict between either of these groups and the efforts to reform school start times. School districts across the nation have already resolved these issues in a manner that was satisfactory for all stakeholders. There were some specific statements by the superintendent that are incorrect or problematic. In particular, no one is suggesting that elementary schools should finish at 1:30 pm. Also, there is no reason why a later start time should affect instructional time at the high school, which is the prerogative of the officials who create the class schedule. The statement that the district is spending significant funds on clinical support suggests that we should be directly addressing sleep deprivation, which is the underlying cause of a significant fraction of student health problems. Finally, the

large physical size of the school district is a strong argument for later start times because long travel times in the buses considerably exacerbate the already too early school start times. What is not mentioned in the article is that Start School Later is a national movement (www. startschoollater.net). Voluntary changes are occurring in school districts across the country, resulting in better academic performance, better sports performance, less time lost to illness and absenteeism, and in many cases less wasted resources for the school district. We have a choice: Either let our children fall behind or become leaders in the Long Island community. I hope — along with some 1,400 signers of the Change.org petition, Start School Later in the Three Village Central School District — that our school district will embrace a leadership role, rather than tactics of delay. Our first trip to the animal hospital with our chocolate eating dog

ogs are incredibly stupid. OK, now that I’ve got your attention, I realize that not all dogs lack intelligence. Lassie and Balto both saved the day. I suspect many dogs, like mine who is now 1 year old, are only as smart as their training. And they need something almost as often as a young child. What’s the matter, boy? You need to D. need to bark at him every time he takes out the hose. Recently, my wife made chocolate chip cookies. She says that we make them together, but my only job is to put them in the oven, wait for them to rise a bit, make sure the edges are cooked and then allow them to finish baking while they cool on the hot tray. She’s the master chef and I am the cookie flash fryer. Anyway, the house was starting to develop that wonderful baked goods smell. My wife, son and I were eagerly awaiting the moment when I could bring the hot plate to the master bed, where we could make “mmm” noises at each other as we talked about the day and compared this batch to the ones we had a few months ago, as if we were reviewers on a cooking show. The young dog has gotten used to the routine. He stands in the kitchen with his ears pitched forward, waiting for his best friend gravity to deliver something to him on the floor,

which is, generally, his domain. He follows us back and forth to get the ingredients from the pantry and then to bring those ingredients back. At 85 pounds, he is a large dog and his eye level has gotten closer to the mixer and the ingredients. We try to push everything to the middle of the island in the kitchen. After doling out the hot cookies onto a plate into the shape of an edible pyramid, I left the room for a moment. When I returned, I shouted in astonishment. The dog had his front legs on the high counter and was reaching his long neck, tongue and head as far as he could. He had devoured half the plate. After admonishing him for eating food that wasn’t his and that was dangerous, I locked him in a room without carpets and called the vet, who asked if I could give an exact number of chips he ate. Of course I couldn’t, which meant I had to bring him in, where the vet would empty the chocolate the dog had stolen.

My wife joined me for our evening adventure. After a few moments, the vet brought our surprisingly happy dog to us in a waiting room and told us he’d also eaten some plastic and a bottle cap. She allayed my embarrassment by telling me that her colleague’s dog — she’s a vet, remember — has had five operations because of the nonfood he’s swallowed that has blocked his system. Her colleague’s dog now wears a satellite dish around his head. While the reception is terrible, he doesn’t need emergency procedures anymore. For all the frustration, the cleaning, the shedding, the wet dog smell, our dog is more than happy to have me, my family member, or the neighbor on the left with the garden hose or on the right with a howling dog, run hands through his wonderfully soft fur. He may not be the smartest or easiest dog on the block, but he is ours and we do get some perks here and there, in between rescuing half chewed flipflops and slippers.

History, with its anniversaries, is the source of endless tales

nniversaries sometimes bring out interesting tidbits of history. One such anniversary involves events that happened 500 years ago. In September 1519, Hernán Cortés met the ruler Montezuma II in what was the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlán that is now Mexico City. Records tell us that Cortés was greeted cordially, in part because his arrival happened to coincide with Aztec expectations of a god returning right at that time. To the Aztecs, the Spanish — 500 strong, with their pale skins, guns, canons and horses — must indeed have seemed godlike. with gunpowder. Montezuma sent out envoys to meet the newcomers and welcome them to the city. The Spanish conquistadors, for their part, had different intentions, as we know from elementary school history. For them it was the Age of Exploration. Christopher Columbus had shown the way in 1492, and young Cortés, bored studying law in Salamanca, western Spain, was eager to follow in those footsteps. So who was Hernán Cortés? He was born into a noble but not wealthy family in 1485 and was smart and ambitious. The original intention of the explorers was to ﬁnd a passage to the Far East, from which they could bring back nutmeg, cloves, pepper and cinnamon, the spices so desired by Europeans. But Cortés wanted to explore the New World to seize more land for Spain and ultimately convert the natives in the Americas to Catholicism even as he plundered their gold, gems and made himself rich. The landscape in the 16th century was dramatically changing, with Afro-Eurasian trade connecting a global economy. Opportunity existed for acquiring great wealth. In 1504, Cortés set sail for Hispaniola —

now Haiti and the Dominican Republic — where he became a notary and farmer. In 1511, he joined Diego Velásquez on an expedition to conquer Cuba, where he eventually became the equivalent of mayor of Santiago. Then he persuaded Velásquez to enable a voyage to Mexico, and despite an order at the last minute canceling the trip, he set sail with 11 ships, 500 men and 16 horses, and landed in the Yucatán Peninsula, on the east coast of Mexico, in 1519. He was, by all accounts, astounded by the gruesome rituals and human sacrifices he saw there, and he replaced pagan idols with crosses and figures of the Virgin Mary. Like so many of the other conquistadors, he regarded the natives as inferior culturally, technologically and religiously. When he encountered resistance in a place called Tabasco, he overpowered the opposition and was given, among other prizes, 20 women slaves. One was La Malinche, who became an important figure in his life and in his eventual success in conquering Montezuma, for she was able to learn languages and translated Mayan and Aztec for him after she learned Spanish. She also bore him a son, one of the

ﬁrst children of mixed heritage. However, when eventually his wife joined him in Mexico from Spain, Cortés appears not to have acknowledged either his mistress or son. The rest, as we know, is history. Cortés went on to conquer the Aztecs, with the help both of some of the dissident tribes the Aztecs ruled and smallpox, against which the natives had no immunity. An estimated 3 million indigenous people fell victim to the disease. Cortés sacked the sophisticated capital city and began rebuilding Mexico City on its ruins. Although he was eventually appointed governor of New Spain, he was removed from power by Spanish King Charles I in 1526. Cortés went on to discover Baja, California, in the 1530s. His ﬁrst wife had died in 1522 and he remarried, fathering several children along the way. Ultimately he returned to Spain, where he died in 1547 in his early 60s, frustrated and embittered that he had not received the recognition and rewards he felt he was owed. Another anniversary this week, the 80th, is of when Germany marched into Poland and launched the Second World War. But that is another tale.
