Drugs, weapons uncovered in bust By RoHMa aBBaS
Suffolk County police say they arrested two gang members after searching a Huntington home last Thursday and uncovering drugs and loaded weapons. Police executed a search warrant at the Cedar Drive home in Huntington, and investigators seized a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semiautomatic handgun, cocaine, marijuana, cash, digital scales and an assortment of drug packaging equipment, cops said in a statement. The drugs had a street value of more than $3,000. Wesley Erickson, 31, a resident of the home, was charged with second-degree criminal
possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, two counts of second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana. Andre Knox, 37, of Huntington Station, was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Erickson and Knox, who police said are both members of the Old Station Soldiers gang, were held overnight at the 2nd Precinct and are scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sept. 11. In a statement, Cops said the execution of the search warrant was “part of the Suffolk County Police Department’s continuing enforcement efforts in the Town of Huntington.” Attorney information for the pair was not available.

Thousands will flock to Northport Village to enjoy the annual Cow Harbor Weekend activities this weekend, but one will be doing it for the last time. Anchored by the Great Cow Harbor 10K run on Saturday morning, Cow Harbor Weekend also includes a Saturday night concert and a parade and fair in the village on Sunday. This year will be unique in that it is the

Suffolk County police say they are investigating a crash that seriously injured a woman in East Northport on Tuesday night. Shannon Hanly, 28, of Massapequa, was driving a 2004 Jeep northbound on Larkfield Road south of Zoranne Drive when she lost control of her car and struck a utility pole, according to a police statement.
Cops said she was transported to Southside Hospital by a Commack Volunteer Ambulance corps where she was admitted in serious condition. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Second Squad at (631) 854-8252.
One man plus one man equals oh man Two 22-year-old men were arrested in front of the Paramount in Huntington on Sept.11 for engaging in a fistfight on a public sidewalk, within ten minutes of each other. One man, from Huntington Station, resisted arrest when he was commanded by officers to stop fighting and then refused to place his hands behind his back. He was also found to have marijuana in his possession. He was charged with disorderly conduct, fighting and violent behavior at 11:20 p.m. The other man, from Mastic Beach, punched and wrestled with officers and fled the scene on foot for a short time until police caught up to him. He was arrested at 11:29 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct, fighting, engaging in violent behavior, and intent to cause physical injury to a police officer.
Don’t take me out to the ball game A 21-year-old man from Huntington Station was arrested on Sept. 11 for an incident police said occurred earlier. On Sept. 6 at 4:10 a.m. on Broadway and Biltmore Circle in Huntington Station cops said he struck a man multiple times with a baseball bat and the victim was taken to Huntington Hospital. He also slashed a second man with a knife. The assailant was charged with assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon.
Slice, slice baby Police arrested a homeless man on Sept. 12 at 156 Depot Road in Huntington Station for attacking a man with a knife. The man suffered lacerations on his neck and required medical attention at 5:05 p.m., and the attacker was arrested a short time later. The man was charged for assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon.
Drive-through At 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 11, a 26-year-old woman from Huntington Station was arrested for causing damage with her vehicle. She was driving a 2006 Nissan Altima on New York Avenue in Huntington when she struck a parked 2002 Lexus that was unattended. She failed to stop afterwards and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and property damage. Steven G. Santino, the New York market leader, first vice president and senior growth manager at People’s United Bank, was the guest of honor at the annual Geraldo Rivera Golf Classic, a tournament established more than 20 years ago to raise funds for Life’s WORC, a nonprofit that supports individuals with developmental disabilities. Santino, a Huntington resident, is responsible for 57 People’s United Bank
branches in New York, including the growing presence that this 170-year-old financial institution has enjoyed in the Long Island region. The sold-out fundraiser was held at Edgewood Country Club in New Jersey. The proceeds went to assist some 1,200 people with developmental disabilities, mental retardation and autism who receive services from this Garden City-based agency launched 45 years ago by Queens

Many coaches say that the purpose of nonleague games is for one team to play a better team, or to “play up,” in an effort to raise their game and improve their play by facing a faster team with greater skill sets. Newfield girls’ soccer head coach Ann Marie Hassett agreed in the offseason to a nonleague matchup against Half Hollow Hills West, but this year, she sensed something was different. “This is the first year they’re not in our league, so when the coach called and asked if I wanted to play a nonleague game, I paused, because we’ve never beaten them in the eight years I’ve been here,” Hassett said. “But our team has come a long way. We’ve

grown; we’ve played well together, so I thought that this time we could beat them.” Her inclination was right, as on Saturday, for the first time in eight years, the Wolverines outlasted Hills West, scoring three unanswered goals, and coupled that with defensive play that kept their opponent on their heels, to claim the shutout victory. Ten minutes in, Newfield sophomore midfielder Taylor Regensburger started the scoring when she drove her shot to the back of the net off a feed from eighth-grade midfielder Sierra Rosario, to take the lead 1-0. Under a hot sun in a game riddled with injuries, Hills West struggled to get the ball to its forwards, as the Newfield defensive pressure was more than the team could handle. With 11 minutes left in the first, senior forward Michelle Bartolo, a co-captain, set up the next score with a cross pass to Rosario, who chipped it in for the 2-0 advantage. “It was a really good cross — a really good cross from Michelle,” Rosario said. “I

just redirected it and it went in.” Hassett said that Bartolo was playing defense for the first time and added that her senior captain did an amazing job in her defensive role. “I was playing defense and there was a free ball so I crossed it in and C.C. [Rosario] kicked it in,” Bartolo said. As time wound down in the final half, Newfield junior midfielder Kristen Prevosto, on a crossing pass, fed senior forward Cori Myers, who shot the ball into the corner of the net. With their league opening loss to North Babylon in overtime, along with their blowout victory over Riverhead on Friday, the Wolverines improve to 2-1 overall. Newfield will take on Smithtown East next, in League III action at home today at 4 p.m. Hassett said that the heavily favored North Babylon team was expected to easily outscore Newfield but said her team held its own and took the game into overtime. The coach added that the win over Half Hollow

North Shore man brings first responders’ fight to D.C. Locals hope to sway pols to renew health care benefits By Victoria Espinoza
The 9/11 first responders who have fought for years to get health care support are heading back to Washington, D.C., in hopes of ushering in the renewal of the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act. And for one Nesconset resident, change cannot come soon enough. Parts of the bill will expire next month, and other parts in October 2016. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act would extend the programs of the original Zadroga act indefinitely. It was introduced to Congress in April and currently has 150 bipartisan co-sponsors. “When this bill expires, our illnesses do not expire,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation, in a phone interview. Feal, of Nesconset, has been walking the halls of Congress for the past eight years to help get this bill passed. He is also a 9/11 first responder who worked on the reconstruction at Ground Zero and lost half of his foot in the process. He suffered from gangrene, but he says his injuries “pale in comparison to other first responders.” President Barack Obama signed the
current Zadroga act into law in 2011 and established the World Trade Center Health Program, which will expire in October if not renewed. The WTC program ensured that those whose health was affected by 9/11 would receive monitoring and treatment services for their health-related problems. It consists of a responder program for rescue and recovery workers and New York City firefighters, and a survivor program for those who lived, worked or went to school in lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001. The Zadroga act also reopened the September 11th Victims Compensation Act, which allows for anyone affected to file claims for economic losses due to physical harm or death caused by 9/11. That will expire in October of next year. Feal said he was asked by television personality Jon Stewart to come on “The Daily Show” in December 2010, but the Nesconset native said he did not want to leave the real legislative fight in D.C. Instead, he helped get four 9/11 responders to the Dec. 16, 2010, episode, who helped shed light on the ongoing battle these responders were dealing with in Congress. “He was definitely one of the reasons the bill got passed,” Feal said of Stewart. responders when they traveled to Washington, D.C, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and took part in a mini rally. The bill did not pass the first time it was presented to Congress back in 2006. A new version was drafted in 2010 and passed in the House of Representatives, but was having trouble getting through the Senate due to a Republican filibuster. The bill received final congressional approval on Dec. 22, 2010, and was enacted by the president on Jan. 2, 2011. Jennifer McNamara, a Blue Point resident and president of The Johnny Mac
Foundation, is also actively involved in the fight to keep responders health costs covered. Her late husband, John McNamara, passed away in 2009 from stage IV colon cancer. He was a New York City Firefighter and worked more than 500 hours at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of 9/11. He worked with responders to get support for the Zadroga bill before he died. “These people did tremendous things for their country,” McNamara said. “They shouldn’t have to guess about whether they are going to be taken care of.”

On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Village of Asharoken will sponsor the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society’s 30th annual Coastal Cleanup. Last year, volunteers who participated hauled nearly 5,000 pounds of trash from local beaches and shores, according to a statement from Mayor Greg Letica. The collection/recording of shoreline trash data is sent to the Littoral Society and subsequently submitted to the Ocean Conservancy’s national database. This data provides actual information as to what kinds of trash are washing up and/ or being dumped onto local beaches and shores. The cleanup volunteers will be supplied with trash bags, pencils, gloves and data cards. There are shorelines within walking distance of Asharoken Beach, or people can chose to drive to other local beaches. Everyone is requested to return to Asharoken Village Hall with their trash collection and data cards. Each volunteer will be awarded a community service certificate, signed by Letica.

OPINION EDITORIAL Never means never The definition of hero is a person who is admired, or idealized, for courage. And we can’t think of a more courageous act than stepping up and putting others first in the aftermath of a tragedy like the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. When the dust had settled on that horrific day, elected leaders stood hand-in-hand with our first responders, whether they were firefighters, police officers or just volunteers. The narrative was that we would honor their sacrifices and do whatever it took to back them up, long after the debris was removed. And yet here we are, 14 years later, making them wait to see whether the government will have
their backs when they need it most. Never forget, right? This week, Nesconset native John Feal headed to Washington, D.C., alongside other heroic first responders from across the Island, state and country to call on Congress to renew the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Originally approved five years ago, the legislation helped provide health care and programs to more than 33,000 of our first responders and their families because of complications stemming from their efforts at Ground Zero. But that legislation is slated to expire next month, and it’s not clear whether it will be renewed. What happened to doing whatever it took to support our heroes? It is shameful to have this same discussion every few years, once legislation expires, because all that does is turn these people into political bargaining

others who worked alongside him know that we will have their backs — because they had ours when we needed it most.
Spencer: E-cigs trend poses dangers to children TO ThE EDITOR: The increase in the use of e-cigarettes among our youth concerns me as a father, a doctor and as a legislator. Accompanying this increase is a conception that e-cigarettes are safe; this is a myth that, left unchecked, will prove to be a disservice to our youth. In April of this year, the CDC reported that e-cigarette use tripled among middle and high school students in a single year, surpassing every other tobacco product on the market, including traditional cigarettes. What are the consequences of this trend? Let’s be clear, e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which negatively affects developing adolescent brains. The teenage brain has higher levels of dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating attention and impulse. Consumption of nicotine increases dopamine levels and makes the user vulnerable to engaging in risky behaviors, like becoming users of traditional cigarettes, among other things. Studies of youth have shown that nonsmokers with previous exposure to e-cigarettes compared with those without exposure were more likely to report use of a combustible tobacco product. This is not speculation or opinion, but evidenced-based, scientific data.

Let’s also consider that the delivery of formaldehyde through e-cigarettes is nearly 5 times greater than that of conventional cigarettes. Commonly used as a fungicide, germicide, disinfectant and preservative in mortuaries, formaldehyde has been classified as a human carcinogen. Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can lead to cancer. There’s no reason on this earth that a young person should be exposed to this, yet sadly they are. I will continue to be a voice
on this issue as it relates to our youth. It is our responsibility to afford young people the opportunity to become the best versions of themselves. Stacking the cards against them with an environment that makes them vulnerable to using ecigarettes is just not acceptable. he night starts off with the top dog standing in front of a packed auditorium, selling all of us on the idea that what our children are about to receive in the form of another year of education at their fine institution is a spectacular blend of academic learning, extracurricular opportunities, social growth and development, and personal inspiration.
Ah, can’t you just hear the academic angels singing? Somewhere in that magical evening known as Back to School Night, the principal and his or her vice-principal minions suggest how spectacular the teachers are, how magnificent the community is, how incredible the resources are and, most of all, how wonderful the parents are for being involved and coming to this Evening of Champions. These people who are in these top academic positions are often doctors, although they’re not the kind with stethoscopes and they don’t have a waiting room full of old copies of People magazine. They assure us that they’re people, too, and that they’ve been where we are. They know what it’s like to have someone they’ve brought into the world treat them as if they’re somewhere between an athlete’s foot fungus and a pimple surfacing on the tip of their nose just before the most
incredible moment of their lives. But, wait, there’s more. Their teachers tell us what they’ll learn, they smile, shake our hands — and assure us how excited they are to be sharing in this experience with our wonderful children. Wonderful? Seriously? We can only hope that’s the case when they’re in school because the “wonderful” has been squeezed out of them by hormones that turn their voices into violins with broken strings, by their tough-love coaches, and by their would-be girlfriends and boyfriends who have decided that today is perfect to send them a text saying, “Sorry, we can’t date anymore because I’m looking for someone better.” It’s almost like one of those old-fashioned sing-alongs, where we watch teachers with their Smart Boards at the front of the room, following the bouncing ball as it wows us with one after another of the stops on the journey to enlightenment.

For comic relief, we might get to hear from a teacher who seems about as comfortable speaking in public as I did when I was in seventh grade. He might look down at his feet as he talks, read from a script or take two huge gulps before each sentence. Speaking in front of a group of people, we realize quickly, is not exactly the ideal way to spend his day. As they talk, they tell us how much they love a subject that, truth be told, might not be their first choice. However, the nearest district hiring biology teachers is an hour away and our school desperately needs a language arts teacher. They implore us to share information about our kids. That’s when we reach into our sales bag and suggest how eager our children are to fill their minds with inspiration and information. We plaster an enthusiastic smile on our faces as we hand in our creative writing assignments. We emerge from the school,
