Huntington’s commuters are being enticed to stop and appreciate the beautiful aspects of their hometown each day as they pass under the Long Island Rail Road tracks.

Dozens of parents, teachers and students in South Huntington’s Birchwood Intermediate School community have spent hours this August transforming the railroad and pedestrian overpass on Route 110/New York Avenue into a bright, colorful community mural.

“This is the hub of the community, it bridges Huntington and South Huntington,” said Annie Michaelian, former assistant principal at Birchwood. “We felt it would be a nice place to set a gift of beautification.”

Barbara Wright, a fifth-grade teacher at Birchwood, said she proposed the idea to the SchoolBased Management Committee in March as a way of giving back to the community. Wright had previously done a similar — but much smaller, she stressed — mural with her Girl Scout Brownie troop in Blue Point. Michaelian said after mulling the idea over, she was on board.

“It’s an opportunity you get once in a lifetime to do it together as a community,” she said.

School officials reached out to the Town of

Huntington, gaining the support of Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) for the project as it gained momentum. Next, the SBM committee held a meeting with LIRR representatives in late June, as the organization owns the railroad and pedestrian overpasses, according to Michaelian, to get full approval for the mural before going full steam ahead.

Wright had Birchwood students, like 11-yearold Danny Ryan, draw and sketch out what the mural should represent.

“We tried to think of the beautiful side of Huntington and come up with ideas, then put them together into the mural,” Danny said.

Area residents should be able to easily identify some of the iconic landmarks painted on the overpass including the Huntington Lighthouse and the southwest entrance to Heckscher Park, and a stylized version of the park’s fountains and bridges.

“Everything that you see, all of the elements were drawn by the kids,” Wright said. “I can tell you the kid who drew that flower, that boat, that lighthouse.”

Once the individual drawings were photoshopped together into the mural, it became a matter of finding volunteers to execute the vision, and so a signup form was put on the school’s website. Aboff’s Paints in Huntington donated

all the paint, brushes, rollers and supplies needed, according to the assistant principal.

“There was an outpouring of people who wanted to help,” Michaelian said. “Community members have been driving by, beeping and saying they love it. It’s become this beautiful thing.”

Wright and her husband, Paul, began placing outlines of the children’s drawings up on the overpass tunnels the first weekend of August, with rotating shifts of volunteers picking up the paintbrushes each Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Dozens of children and their parents have come down to paint and bring life to their drawings.

“They are taking complete ownership,” she said. “They are so committed.”

During Labor Day weekend, Birchwood Principal Anthony Ciccarelli could be found rolling out a blue sky on the western wall of the overpass to serve as a backdrop to an airplane.

“You are so proud of the whole school community for coming together, first for thinking of the idea and thinking of the community and, second, thinking of how to better your community,” Ciccarelli said. “That’s what we try to teach the kids all the time: You come to school to learn, but you are also part of a bigger thing, part of your community, of your state and your country.”

Superintendents in Suffolk County are trying to get their schools all on the same page when it comes to safety.

Following the particularly deadly school shooting — though just the latest in a long line of similar occurrences — that took place in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, which resulted in 17 fatalities, discussions about concrete steps to enhance safety for students and staff in buildings from coast to coast have been seemingly unending.

In Suffolk County, school officials have teamed up to release a five-point blueprint of actionable steps, officially recommended by the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association Aug. 27 to local, state and federal lawmakers.

The superintendents are calling on lawmakers to invest in the School Resource Officer program, providing additional officers in Suffolk County schools; adopt legislation that enhances campus safety, including amending the New York State Criminal Procedure Law dealing with setting bail; make the NY SAFE Act the law of the land; support the social, emotional and mental health of children through screening programs and educa-

tion initiatives; and provide institutional support to finance school safety, calling for the state to initiate school security aid and to exempt school safety expenditures from the tax-levy limitation.

“While school safety has always been a top priority, following the horrific massacre at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado, and the tragic events that followed, the importance of a strong working relationship between the police, mental health providers and public-school officials has become more important than ever,” the association said in a press release. “The SCSSA plans to continue to work together with Suffolk County law enforcement and local, state and federal legislators to turn these plans into actions that will improve school safety and the safety and wellness of all students in Suffolk County.”

In August, representatives from Sandy Hook Promise, a national nonprofit organization that was founded by parents from the Connecticut elementary school to carry out its mission of preventing all gun-related deaths, held a forum for the association and law enforcement officials.

The purpose of the meeting was to share details about four programs they’ve created aimed at preventing violence in schools.

The four strategies, which fall under the nonprofit’s Know the Signs programs, are taught to

Helping millenials stay here is vital to our future

I recently put forth legislation that directed the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning to create a pilot program that would offer ways for young adults to reduce their student loan debt, thereby making them more attractive candidates for homeownership.

The exodus of college graduates from Long Island is well known by now. We have all heard the stories of young adults living in their parents’ basement, unable to find affordable housing on the Island. We also know of those who invested time and money on postgraduate education only to find their new debt-to-income ratio made them unattractive candidates for a mortgage and homeownership.

A 2016 report prepared by the New York State Comptroller’s Office indicated the average school loan balance carried by an individual on Long Island is about $33,900. Statistics indicate some 45 million people in the U.S. have student debt and that more than 80 percent of young adults who haven’t bought a home cite student

loans as the reason. We know that repaying student loans can take up to 20 years and for those continuing with advanced degrees, those years can stretch into decades.

The absence of housing options as well as the prohibitive costs are factors driving young professionals to desert the towns in which they grew up and head to other parts of the country deemed to be more affordable.

It is a scenario that plays out over and over.

The result is that businesses and corporations on Long Island are also struggling to find qualified workers to fill the available jobs, many of which are technology-based and dependent on new graduates who have the STEM skills needed in today’s employment market.

If we look at other areas around the country we can see some examples of the creativity used to incentivize young professionals who are looking to establish careers and grow roots in a community.

The State of Maryland has SmartBuy, a $10-million program that lets people with education loans purchase a home and wipe out college debt at the same time using an innovative model

that combines a buyer’s down payment with a state contribution.

Detroit has its Downtown Detroit program which can provide up to $20,000 in a forgivable loan toward the purchase of a primary residence providing it is in one of several designated areas.

Niagara Falls has allowed reimbursement on two- and four-year degrees if the individual rents an apartment or buys a home in a designated area.

In Suffolk County, we need to think creatively.

We need to find partners among housing advocates and business leaders. We need to learn from others who are already working on plans and those who have the experience to know what will work and what won’t.

Then we need to find the will to make whatever hard choices are involved to give this next generation of Long Islanders a chance to live where they love, surrounded by family and friends, to have a good-paying job and a place to call home.

The future of Long Island depends on it.

Peter F. Bartolomeo, 92, of East Northport, died Aug. 21. He was the retired administrator of the Flushing Post Office and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was the loving husband of Gloria (née Celemente); devoted stepfather of Michael (Jeanne) Daw; beloved grandfather of Matthew (Starr Kole) Daw and Brendan (Ian Klein) Daw; and fond brother of Donald.

A funeral service was held at the Northport American Legion Post 694 followed by a prayer service at Nolan Funeral Home in Northport.

Interment with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.

Suffolk County police have arrested a Northport-East Northport school district employee who allegedly while driving hit a student on his way to athletic practice at the high school Tuesday morning.

A 14-year-old Northport boy was walking westbound on Laurel Hill Road, when he was struck by a 2005 Honda sedan traveling eastbound at 8:06 a.m. Sept. 4, according to police.

The teen was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and we will support him and his family in any way needed,” Superintendent Robert Banzer said in message posted on the district’s website. “We will also cooperate with the Suffolk County Police Department as they conduct their investigation of the accident.”

The alleged driver of the Honda, Janet Aliperti, 57, of East Norwich, was not injured in the crash.

Aliperti is an employee of the Northport school district, and a LinkedIn profile listed under the same name notes her position as a food service worker.

Suffolk police arrested Aliperti and charged her with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operation while registration is suspended, and having an uninsured vehicle. The car has been impounded for a safety check, according to police.

Newspaper publishers, editors and staff members across the country — especially weeklies operating on tight budgets — are breathing sighs of relief.

Last week the United States International Trade Commission overturned President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian newsprint, and we couldn’t be happier. The tariffs that the U.S. began charging this year caused many newspapers in the country to cut staff or paper sizes — in some cases both — to absorb the rise in newsprint costs. Other publications closed their doors as the additional expense was the breaking point for many outlets, making it impossible to continue operating in an environment already riddled with challenges in a changing industry.

The overturning of this tariff, besides creating a sigh of relief, has demonstrated the balance of power in our country at work.

Many have expressed fear about how much power a president may have or think he has, but our forefathers were visionaries.

Declaring their independence from England, they knew a monarchy wouldn’t work in the U.S. All levels of government, from federal down to local, are designed with checks and balances in place in the form of executive, legislative and judicial branches. The president may want something to happen — in this case to impose a tariff — but that doesn’t mean that senators, congressmen, judges and federal agencies have to agree with him. And if they don’t, they have the power to make sure that a bill or an edict doesn’t go forward or remain in place.

Speaking of our Founding Fathers, they ensured the U.S. Constitution contained an amendment to aid in protection of the free press. It was written to allow journalists to fairly report on events and happenings without government interference. This enables reporters the freedom and ability to keep a close eye on what elected officials are up to.

Imagine if weekly, in most cases local, newspapers needed to continue to absorb the newsprint tariff. We presume many more would suffer, and as each one folded, regional and national outlets would be left to try to pick up the slack jumping into areas local news reporters know inside and out. Or worse: No one would pick up the slack.

If the press runs into an issue like this again — government decisions directly impacting our ability to do our jobs effectively — we as an industry have shown there is strength in numbers. In a show of unity, Aug. 16, hundreds of papers in the U.S. published similar editorials voicing displeasure over the president’s disrespectful treatment of members of the press dating back to his campaign. The goal was to make it clear that the press wasn’t the enemy of the people.

There is no one that knows me as a friend, acquaintance, journalist or simply a politically opinionated resident that does not consider me as anything but a liberal democrat, now fashionably called a progressive. That said, tears filled my eyes Aug. 25 when I heard of the death of the honorable senator, John McCain.

Some 17 years my elder, I was 5 years old when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. In 1969 I became a very active member of the Vietnam anti-war movement, and McCain was a prisoner in North Vietnam at the “Hanoi Hilton” prison camp. I did not dodge the draft, and although I had the right to apply for a college deferment I did not, as I saw the inequity of that based on the percentage of American whites in college as opposed to African-Americans.

When I registered in 1971, I expressed a willingness to serve but requested a designation as a noncombatant conscientious objector. Neither my parents nor my priest would sign the paperwork and I was denied my request by the draft board. As I waited out the 1972 draft with a suitcase packed for a train ride to Canada, McCain still sat in North Vietnam as a prisoner. He experienced horrible torture and turned down what he considered an out-of-order repatriation designation

because of his father’s position as the admiral that oversaw the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet. In 1973 the war ended, I celebrated with other anti-war Beantown college students packing Harvard Square and dancing in the street, as McCain still sat in prison. He eventually was put on a plane in Hanoi and returned to America, but with arms so broken from his aircraft crash that caused his capture and a re-breaking of his arms under torture, he was never again able to lift his arms high enough to even comb his own hair or put on his own jacket. We danced in Boston. McCain could not lift his arms over his head, nor would he ever be able to lift any future grandchildren over his head like the rest of us.

Rather than choose a comfortable future after as much of a dedicated life to his country as any American can claim, he continued serving his country by entering into American politics. After his position as naval liaison to the Senate from 1977 until he retired from the Navy in 1981, he ran for the House of Representatives in 1982 and won in a heavily Republican Arizona district he decided to call home after a life of growing up with no real home as a son in a naval family. After two terms, he ran for the Senate and was re-elected five times.

Two runs for the presidency resulted in

a primary loss to George W. Bush and a general election loss to Barack Obama.

Ironically, both men eulogized McCain at his personally arranged funeral, while our current president was not even invited to attend. In his death McCain may have made the greatest statement about the sitting president.

Obviously, I did not agree with many of McCain’s political opinions, but we did agree on Native American rights, that immigrants created this great country, and that there is no place in America for prejudice and bigotry.

He was a man of integrity that believed government could not function without compromise, and his frustration with the current state of affairs in Congress he made abundantly clear during the closing years of his senatorial service and in the last letter he left for the American people. This was a man who exemplified the qualities of honor, service and, again, integrity. Certainly, I pale in comparison to this man when it comes to sacrifice for country, as most of us do. I fear we will not see another of his like again if the discourse of our American politic continues along its present path. God’s speed Senator John McCain, God bless!

Something is wrong, we must speak up What do you do when everything within says the policies and statements coming from the White House are unjust, inhumane and ultimately un-American? You feel it in your bones: Something is wrong, morally wrong.

Because when immigrant children are taken from their parents and placed in cages, that is immoral. When an entire people is stereotyped as “criminals and rapists,” that is immoral. When politicians beholden to the NRA protect guns over students, when the wealthy get big tax breaks while the poor face losing food stamps, when environmental regulations are stripped so greedy corporations can increase profits, all of that is immoral.

And when the president makes enemies of our allies and allies of our enemies, siding with a brutal human rights-abusing dictator over U.S. intelligence communities, it is not only immoral but treasonous,

even if our economy is humming along, and it’s tempting to turn a deaf ear to the cries of people suffering the consequences of immoral decisions.

Something is terribly wrong. That’s why I felt compelled to shout in protest, “Stop the hate talk!” and “We are all Americans!” during Congressman Lee Zeldin’s June 28 campaign rally after hearing speakers ridicule Americans with whom they disagreed. I’d do it again because I’m sick over the direction in which our country is moving and am convinced we must use every platform available to appeal to Trump die-hards like Zeldin to turn back this terrible tide.

We need acts of nonviolent moral resistance, planned or unplanned, alone or with others. We need to exercise our God-given, Constitution-affirming inalienable right to protest because as a friend once said, the

opposite of depression is expression and expressing your outrage, even in a small way, is far better than staying depressed.

I was thrown out of Zeldin’s campaign event along with two newspaper reporters with visible press credentials. Could it be that in Smithtown — pegged “Zeldin country” by the town supervisor during that same rally — the Trumpian refrain of the press is “the enemy of the people,” despite its ugly history, is frighteningly embraced?

Something is terribly wrong, and it may take all of us — white, black, brown, left, right, Christian, Muslim, Jew, gay, straight, rich and poor — to come together and express ourselves before our democracy goes over the cliff that leaders like Trump and Zeldin have brought us to.

Avoiding the slings and arrows of would-be foes

here people live, conflicts thrive.

It’s inevitable. Get two people in a room for long enough and, eventually, they will find elements about the other person that irritate them. It’s what drives people to watch some reality TV shows.

When it happens to other people, it’s entertainment. When it happens to us, it can hurt.

Why do we care what other people think?

We know that some people will find fault with everyone — their mothers, siblings and bosses — making criticism inevitable and, ultimately, meaningless.

If someone stood on the side of the road and yelled “Duck!” often enough, pretty soon people would stop ducking, would stop looking for ducks, and, like so many other noises around them, wouldn’t hear the warning anymore.

And yet, when someone we know or even someone we’ve recently met indicates a disdain for us, scowls at our presence, or undermines our abilities, intelligence or effort, we feel cut to the quick. That person might just be repeating the same criticisms to us that he or she levies at everyone all the time.

It’s like a fortune cookie. We read something that says, “You need to think twice before taking advice.” Wow, we think, how incredibly insightful, even as we ignore the irony that we are taking advice from a small slip of paper crushed into a Pac-Man shaped cookie. Someone recently gave me advice that seems valuable, like

quitting a job I hate, but maybe that person just wants to take my job or doesn’t want to hear me complaining. Maybe that advice doesn’t really apply to me after all.

The same holds true for insults, criticism and nastiness. It could apply to us or it could just be fortune cookie nastiness, conjured up by someone who may not enjoy the life he or she leads, trying to make everyone as miserable as them.

Insults are ubiquitous. Much of the time, however, the insult is an opinion, not a fact.

There are times when an admonishment such as “You weren’t driving well” is accurate, particularly if you were driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

We don’t immediately imagine the person doing the insulting might be sharing an opinion about us that we would almost instantly dismiss if it were about our spouse, our children, our parents or our close friends. We think, “Maybe I am terrible at this,” or “Maybe I should be embarrassed.”

People make puppets, write stories about fictional characters, draw cartoons and imaginary figures because they want to control something.

But just because they want control doesn’t mean you have to give it to them. Even assuming someone doesn’t like you, your appearance or your ideas, so what? Our preferences are so subjective that we can’t or shouldn’t try to please everyone.

We don’t have to play those reindeer games.

We can disagree and express our opinions without attacking someone else. We follow whatever rules we set for ourselves and don’t need to fight fire with fire, hit back 10 times harder or show that we mean business. We can be more graceful than our detractors.

When someone attacks us, we don’t have to act as if we’re wearing a target. We can look at that person, put a slow smile on our face and say, “It’s too bad you feel that way. Maybe a good fortune cookie would cheer you up?”

have been considered by military specialists for mind control since the Cold War. These invisible beams can transmit painfully loud booms and even spoken words into people’s heads, according to an astonishing story by William J. Broad on the front page of last Sunday’s New York Times. Now Douglas H. Smith, director of the Center for Brain Injury and Repair at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the lead author of a recent study of 21 affected diplomats from Cuba, pointed to this possible cause of the brain injuries.

The Frey effect, named after American biologist Allan H. Frey, occurs when microwaves cause the brain to “hear” ordinary sounds, like loud noises, ringing and even human voices.

These can be the result of stealth attacks with sonic weapons.

Jason, a secretive group of elite scientists that, according to The Times, helps the federal government assess new threats to national security, has been called in to figure out the cause of the symptoms. While the group has

There is still no definitive explanation for the sickness of diplomatic personnel in Cuban and subsequently China, but suspicions of microwave radiation remain high on the list. The problem in pinpointing them is the stealth.
