GOP lawmakers request voter approval for red-light camera program

BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga) with the support of the Republican Caucus is requesting a Certificate of Necessity (CN) from County Executive Steve Bellone (D) to reauthorize the red-light camera program in Suffolk County through a mandated referendum.

“Let the public decide if this program is saving lives or costing the taxpayers their hard earned dollars,” said Trotta.

His fellow Republicans echoed this sentiment.

According to Trotta, a $250,000 study, prepared by L. K. McLean Associates, did not provide the data that the Suffolk County Legislature was seeking to thoroughly determine if the red-light camera program should be extended for another five years.

In addition, the report noted that accidents increased 60 percent at red-light camera locations, yet the consultants argued that the program should continue.

Republican legislators Tom Climi (R-Bay Shore), Kevin McCaffrey (R-Lindenhurst),

Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset), Tom Muratore (R-Ronkonkoma), Steven Flotteron (R-Bay Shore) and Rudy Sunderman (R-Mastic Beach) support Trotta’s resolution to have a mandated referendum on the November ballot.

“This bill is a yes or no to sign the contract for renewal of the red-light cameras,” said Kennedy. “We have been told that we can work on issues once the contract is signed. We all know that all issues are defined upon contract signature, just look at the roughly 15 million we had to pay out when our County Executive decided to breach the signed contract at Ronkonkoma Rail Road Station for solar panels.”

The GOP Caucus leader Tom Climi has said that his seven-member caucus will vote unanimously to end the program.

“The results speak for themselves: more than a thousand additional crashes at redlight camera intersections involving thousands of drivers, all put at risk of injury or worse, all subjected to vehicle repair costs and increased insurance rates, with no reduction in fatalities at these intersections,” Climi said. “Rather than taking photos and video at

these intersections, pretending to make them safer, we should engineer these intersections to actually BE safer.”

Trotta had encouraged the public to speak at the Sept. 4 meeting of the full Legislature and to speak in support of his referendum.

The meeting, which was held at the Williams Rogers Building, Legislative Auditorium, 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, began at 9:30 a.m. and by 3:30 p.m. the issue had not yet come up for debate and

residents were still waiting to speak for their allotted three minutes during the public portion.

Democrat leaders were unavailable for comment before going to press. Bellone’s office did not respond to questions about the program.

The results of the Sept. 4 meeting were unavailable before press time.

22 veterans kayak across Sound for PTSD awareness

Twenty-two kayakers in 11 boats. Twenty-two miles from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson.

On each of their minds, the estimated 22 veterans who commit suicide each year, and the many thousands more veterans and other people who suffer from PTSD. In the final days of summer, the 22 veterans left Bridgeport at just after 10 a.m. and arrived in Port Jefferson at just before 5 p.m. As the fourth year of the event, called the 22-PTSD Awareness Challenge, those veterans have a long way to travel, having to turn their boats in a slight parabola to make it the full 22 miles.

Frank Lombardi, one of the co-founders of the event and a veteran himself, said the event is extremely poignant just by the number. Veterans Affairs averages the number of soldiers and veterans who commit suicide at approximately 20 a day.

“Twenty-two veterans make the 22-mile trek, and that’s the magic number,” he said.

22-PTSD Awareness Challenge was started in 2016 with Lombardi, fellow veteran Chris Levi and Alex Rohman, an executive of the Port Jefferson Station-based financial advisors Time Capital. That business, plus three others, helped get the first event up and running. At first, the three co-founders were the only ones to cross.

Since then the number of veterans taking the challenge has only increased.

“I found that if I can get veterans to help other veterans, that’s the best way to help them,” said Rohman. “A lot of organizations compete for veterans, in a way, and we wanted to open this up to as many nonprofits as we can, so a veteran can walk in and see a multitude of services that can help.

On their arrival in Port Jefferson, the Village Center was crammed full of veterans services initiatives for them to peruse. PSEG, while not sponsoring the event, aided the initiative through its community partnership program by providing volunteers. Eight of the kayakers were also employees of PSEG. Two tables were for Independent Group Home Living Program, of which Lombardi is CEO. The money, Lombardi said, is going to Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County, a subsidiary of IGHL that provides therapy services for veterans, among its other services for those experiencing family violence and rape.

The first year of the event raised $60,000 to start a treatment program at VIBS, hiring a treatment specialist. While the amount they annually raise has gone down to around $15,000 per event, the IGHL CEO said the event now focuses more on outreach and getting veterans in touch with the services that can help them.

The veterans who kayaked said the Sound was relatively easy on the swell, though that didn’t stop the wind from picking up at the opposite direction once they neared Port Jefferson Harbor. The kayaks they rode in used pedals instead of oars, though the trek wasn’t any less tiring for it, with veterans of several different ages participating.

Martino Cascio, of Huntington, and Dennis Stringer, of New Hampshire, laughed as they described Cascio flipping their boat to dunk Stringer in the water.

Still, the two, who together completed several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, had a refrain running through their heads. Both have known fellow veterans who suffer from PTSD and others who took their own lives.

“I personally had a couple soldiers I was in a unit with take their own lives,” Stringer said.

“It’s definitely affected me personally.”

Bayshore veteran Donna Zephrine has completed the kayak crossing several times. Having done two deployments in Iraq and having seen many of her compatriots from the army days suffer from PTSD, a few taking their own lives, she said the event truly helps gather veterans from all over into a single place where they might find life-saving services.

“I try to do it in remembrance of them, and all the brothers and sisters who are still struggling, and all those suffering from PTSD,” she said.

Mattituck veteran Tom Gross has done the

event three years in a row. He served in the U.S. Army from 1984 through 1986 in the 82nd Airborne.

“Twenty-two vets a day commit suicide, that’s over 8,000 a year, that’s unacceptable,” he said. “It’s a brotherhood, I didn’t understand how much of a brotherhood it was 30 years ago when I was in it, and when I raised my right hand how far that would carry for the rest of my life.”

Legal roadblock may prevent undocumented immigrants from obtaining state driver’s licenses

State lawmakers voted earlier this year to allow undocumented immigrants the ability to apply for driver’s licenses, but a new legislative effort to undermine that decision is gaining support.

Senate Republican Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport), joined by members of the Long Island Republican Senate delegation, Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo (R-New Suffolk) and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy (R), unveiled a bill Sept. 2 that will protect state Department of Motor Vehicle employees, when they follow federal immigration law over the state law known as the Green Light Law. “Democrats in Albany didn’t yield to the will of the people who overwhelmingly oppose this bad policy that puts our state Department of Motor Vehicles employees in the awful predicament of choosing between whether to abide by federal law or to issue a state license to an illegal immigrant,” Flanagan said in a press release. “It should not be up to our DMV workers to ferret out potentially fraudulent foreign documents that can open up our voting system to abuse, and if they feel uncomfortable with doing so they should not fear being fired. This legislation would protect our employees who act in good faith to follow federal law instead of abetting illegal behavior.”

Issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants faces legal challenges from county clerks and refusals from upstate county clerks to implement it, according to Flanagan’s office, since state em-

ployees would be required to verify foreign identification.

The proposed legislation permits an employee to hire an attorney to defend themselves in the event any civil action is taken against them by the state. It would also protect the employee, if they took action in good faith, and would prevent termination if their actions were in line with federal law.

“This legislation is necessary to protect our everyday workers on the front lines from the dangerous policies the governor and the progressive Democrats have recently embraced,” said Palumbo, who will carry the companion legislation.

“It’s unfortunate that the liberal left’s thinking has been so severely clouded that they would rather pander to the far-left agenda instead of focus on protecting our citizens. The Green Light Law has no safeguards to ensure that an illegal alien’s passport or foreign documents are legitimate upon presentation, placing our DMV employees in a very difficult position to issue a license to someone who’s information they cannot verify. Most importantly, there are no distinguishing marks on the illegal immigrant’s license to differentiate them from a citizen’s license, creating an environment for fraud and abuse that has no limits.”

The Green Light Law was passed by the Democrat-controlled Senate and Assembly, and was signed into law in June by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D). It allows illegal immigrants to provide foreign documentation, without a social security number, to obtain driver’s licenses. The law also prevents any data sharing with immigration re-

lated enforcement to shield immigrants from the federal law.

“DMV employees should not be forced to make a determination whether to follow state or federal law,” state Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) said. “The state employees are responsible for processing all of the required motor vehicle forms. Their job is not to serve as a judge and jury.

If they are uncomfortable with the lawfulness of an action, then they should not be forced to do it and have the fear of losing their jobs.”

Twelve states, other than New York, have similar Green Light laws, including California and Connecticut, where hit-and-run accidents have declined after the law’s implementation. Many states activated these laws in 2014, though Washington, D.C., has had its law on the books since 1993.

“Granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants is a slap in the face to law-abiding citizens and especially to those immigrants who went through the long and difficult process to become legal, taxpaying citizens of this great country,” Kennedy said. “We should not be rewarding illegal behavior. Driving in New York state is a privi-

lege, not a guaranteed right, and we should not be extending privileges to those who do not follow the law.”

If state lawmakers in the Senate and Assembly pass the bill, the governor can veto the legislation.

Cuomo’s office did not respond to request for comment about the bills.

County Police Eight people arrested at sobriety checkpoints Health department reports cases of mosquitos with West Nile virus in Suffolk The state health department said 10 mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County at the end of August, with three samples being found in Rocky Point.

In a release Aug. 30, Suffolk County Department of Health said that the mosquito samples, collected Aug. 20 and 21, had examples of West Nile virus in Lindenhurst, North Babylon, Farmingville, West Babylon, North Patchogue, Huntington Station, Commack and Rocky Point. All but Rocky Point had only one such sample collected.

Suffolk County has reported 53 mosquito samples to date that have tested positive for West Nile and six for Easter equine encephalitis, a virus that can cause brain infections, though no new samples have been collected at this point.

Dr. James Tomarken, the county commissioner of health, said there is a presence, but there is no reason to panic.

“The confirmation of West Nile virus in mosquito samples or birds indicates the presence of West Nile virus in the area,” said Tomarken.

“While there is no cause for alarm, we advise residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to reduce their exposure to the virus, which can be debilitating to humans.”

West Nile virus may cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including fever, headache, vomiting, muscle aches, joint pain and fatigue. There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus. Patients are treated with supportive therapy as needed.

The best way to handle local mosquito populations is for residents to eliminate standing or stagnant water pools in their areas. Tomarken said it’s important for residents to stay vigilant

Suffolk County Police, assisted by New York State Police, arrested eight people and seized one vehicle during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Huntington Station.

Police officers from the Suffolk County Police Department Highway Patrol Bureau’s Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T), assisted by New York State Troopers and officers from the 2nd Precinct, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on southbound Route 110 at Church Street in Huntington Station from 11:15 p.m. Aug. 23 to 2:15 a.m. Aug. 24. The checkpoint was part the ongoing Saturation Saturday enforcement operation, a nationwide Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) initiative targeting impaired driving. A total of 423 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

Motorcyclists dies in crash Suffolk County Police 2nd Squad detectives are investigating a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Huntington Station on Sept. 1, who later died.

Gerson Mendez-Cruz was operating a 2004 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound on Jericho Turnpike when he rode through a red light at the intersection of Melville Road and collided with an Uber at approximately 3:30 a.m. The Uber, a 2018 Ford, had been traveling northbound on Melville Road.

Mendez-Cruz, 20, of Greenlawn, was transported to Huntington Hospital in serious condition. A 22-year-old female passenger in the Uber was transported to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The Uber driver, Felix Perez, 24, of Levittown, was not injured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to contact the 2nd Squad at 631-854-8252.

Women arrested for DWI Suffolk County Police Aug. 31 arrested a woman in Deer Park for driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law following a crash with her 13-year-old daughter and four other children in the vehicle.

Jacquelin Moore was driving a 2012 Mercedes Benz on Acorn Street, near Half Hollow Road, when she crashed the vehicle into a utility pole at approximately 10:10 p.m. A 16-year-old female passenger was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The four other passengers, 15-, 13- and 12-year-old females, and a 7-year-old male were not injured. The

children were released to the custody of family members.

First Squad detectives charged Moore, 47, of 2 Dix Circle, with driving while intoxicated, four counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years or younger (Leandra’s Law) and five counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was held overnight at the 4th Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip on Sept. 1.

Dog lovers call for park access

At Heckscher Park in Huntington, where families and community members regularly gather to listen to music and attend festivals and performances, leashed dogs are unwelcomed.

More than 1,500 people want to see that policy changed. In the last few weeks, a petition has been circulating and websites created outlining all the reasons why they think the Town of Huntington is short-changing its residents with what they call “outdated laws.”

“Leashed dogs in Heckscher will keep Huntington’s tax-paying citizens, their families, and their dogs healthy and encourage tourism and businesses in the Huntington area,” Karen Thomas and Eva Yutani stated in a press release that’s been circulating via email. Thomas, a lifelong resident of Huntington, said that she feels obligated to try and change the rules for the benefit of dogs as well as dog lovers.

The public relations team points out that Northport Harbor Park has allowed leashed dogs for years and has noticed that it’s a very busy park with happy dog owners socializing with other dog owners and enjoying events and music.

The petitioners in some cases see the law as unfair and biased.

“It’s time to let Huntington dog owners enjoy the wonderful public recreational resource just like every other person in town,” said Ginny Munger Kahn, president of LiDog, who is among residents who have signed the petition.

Dog and dog owner’s behavior is often behind the no-dogs-allowed rules. So is fear.

Some people think that their dog is so well-behaved that a leash is unnecessary, which can scare other park visitors, according to some park managers on Long Island. Some people worry that a dog can become aggressive if provoked by another animal or child. And it’s not uncommon for someone to hear the words, “He’s friendly” before being bitten. Then, there’s the poop problem.

At Frank Melville Park in Setauket and Avalon Park and Preserve in Stony Brook and Head of the Harbor, dogs are welcomed, and park visitors are drawn to the spots often because of the open policy. But park management has said in interviews that it’s a constant challenge. They try to instill in park visitors the idea of protecting and enjoying the outdoors, while being very mindful of others.

Whatever resistance there’s been against open park access to leashed dogs in Huntington, the rules have been evolving.

Dogs were banned in all town parks and beaches up until four years ago, when, on a trial basis, they were allowed in five town parks.

In 2017, the town’s Greenway Trails Advisory Committee recommended expanding park access to leashed dogs at all its parklands except at the Betty Allen Nature Preserve, where there’s fishing, and at Heckscher Park, which has high activity. The town board accepted those recommendations.

Dogs remain banned from all beaches and playgrounds.

Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D), who is running for re-election this November, has said in an email that she would support and perhaps even sponsor a resolution that would allow leashed dogs on a trial basis in Heckscher Park, then assess the program to see if the ban should be lifted.

Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci’s (R) office has a different perspective.

“This has been an ongoing discussion in the supervisor’s office, with Public Safety/ Animal Control, Parks and Recreation and the Town Attorney’s office for over a year now to accommodate residents on both sides of this issue,” the town’s Public Information Officer Lauren Lembo said in an email. “Most of our parks allow dogs on-leash but Heckscher was specifically recommended as off-limits to dogs (in the Town Code) by our trails committee for various reasons, including the protection of water fowl, water quality, and vegetation, and due to the narrow trails, which make escape from an unwanted interaction difficult. Dogs are already not allowed on athletic fields, active recreation areas, playgrounds and picnic areas (also in the Town Code), and all these conditions exist at Heckscher.”

Lembo said that the supervisor is looking into establishing nearby dog-friendly alternatives.

Vandals graffiti swastika in Sunshine Park Elected officials ask public for help On Tuesday, Sept. 3, Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) denounced the painted anti-Semitic graffiti vandals left at Sunshine Acres Park on Townline Road in Commack over the holiday weekend and urged residents to report suspicious activity and instances of hate to the Town.

“The swastika is a symbol meant to threaten and intimidate and this demonstration of hate will not be tolerated in the Town of Huntington,” said Lupinacci, who visited the park on Monday, Sept. 2 to be briefed by Director of General Services Andre Sorrentino, whose staff temporarily painted over the graffiti with green paint on a paved path over the Labor Day holiday weekend until they would be able to permanently seal coat the area.

They were joined by Public Safety security guard Dan Froehlich, who was patrolling the trail in the park and informed the supervisor that he has personally broken up groups of young people loitering in the park.

“Our Department of Public Safety is ramping up foot patrols at the park and I urge our residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity in our parks to the Department of Public Safety and suspected instances of hate to the

town’s Anti-Bias Task Force,” said Lupinacci.

The Department of Public Safety reported the hate crime to the Suffolk County Police Department, which is standard protocol. Suspicious or illegal activity in town parks can be reported to the Department of Public Safety to investigate at www.huntingtonny.gov/public-safety or the 24-hour emergency hotline, 631-351-3234.

The Security Division of the Department of Public Safety is responsible for the daily patrol of 77 town facilities, consisting of buildings, properties, beaches and parks, as well as railroad stations and surrounding parking facilities located within the town. The town’s Park Rangers are New York State Certified Peace Officers tasked with keeping the general public order and protecting town parks, beaches and other facilities.

Residents can report instances of hate or bias to the town’s Anti-Bias Task Force through their Department of Human Services liaison, Director Carmen Kasper at humanservices@ huntingtonny.gov or at 631-351-3304.

District welcomes new staff

The Elwood Union Free School District welcomed five new part-time and probationary teachers, as well as a new guidance counselor, at a new teacher orientation on Aug. 27. Held at Elwood Middle School, incoming educators had an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming 2019-20 school year, which was scheduled to begin on Sept. 4.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert kicked the morning off by welcoming incoming guidance counselor Janine Ferrante, music teacher Alexa Gottesman, first grade teacher Christine Messina, mathematics teacher Annette Tekverk, science teacher Kaitlyn Tuna and art teacher Joellyn Tuohy, all of whom will be integrated throughout the district’s four schools.

Following their introductions, Director of Humanities Pam Fine and the district’s Director of Math, Sciences and Technologies Eileen Kelly Gorman led the new hires through several presentations, which were designed to help familiarize them with the district’s policies, procedures and culture.

“Today is about giving them the nuts and bolts for success,” said Gorman.

The teachers learned from Executive Director of Special Services Dianne Wilkinsen how to integrate special needs students into their classrooms. While it was an important introduction, the orientation is just the first of many opportunities for the new hires to get acquainted with the district.

Rather than host a two-day orientation, as was done in the past, administrators plan to host four additional workshops throughout the school year to help tackle topics such as engaging students, curriculum and instruction, lesson planning and how to handle challenging situations.

“It becomes a support team that builds camaraderie among the staff,” Fine said. “It’s nice to be surrounded by people in the exact same boat,” Tekverk added.

Cold Spring Harbor School District School district proposes bond

The Cold Spring Harbor Board of Education invites all community residents to attend an important presentation about a future bond referendum.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 10, starting at 7:30 p.m., in the Francis Roberts Community Center, 75 Goose Hill Road. Immediately following the presentation, the community is invited to attend the board of education meeting, which will begin at 8 p.m.

The board has been diligently analyzing and prioritizing the current and future needs of the school district, listening to community residents, including reviewing the findings of

a community-based survey conducted in June 2019, and working with the bond committee and district administration.

During the presentation, the board will present a proposed scope of work that addresses three areas: enhanced safety and security for students, staff and visitors; expanded curriculum opportunities for all students; and repairs and renovations, beyond the annual budgeted maintenance, to improve the school environment for students and to preserve the community’s investment in the district’s facilities.

Following the presentations, residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their opinions.

Northport-East Northport Union Free School Teaching citizenship

Eric Meyerowitz walked the halls of Northport High School for what he thought would be the last time back in 2006 as the class valedictorian. When he tossed his cap in the air signifying the end of his high school career, little did he know that he would return 13 years later to deliver the keynote address at Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept 3.

Meyerowitz, now a clinical fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, reflected on his high school experience and thanked the district’s teachers for shaping him into the person he is today. “It’s really incredible for me to be back here today,” he said.

In his address, he discussed the crucial role that teachers play in the formation of citizenship in their students and the importance of fostering student and teacher relationships.

He often referred to the final verse of the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance: “With liberty and justice for all.” He explained that freedom and universal equality is the foundation of our society and stressed that those ideals are taught in classrooms every day.

“Citizenship must be taught,” he said. “It must be modeled.”

Meyerowitz discussed the five traits of active citizenship: self-worth, learning to value differences, critical and independent thinking, strong work ethic and community service.

Schools prepare for children There wasn’t a parking space to be had at Harborfields High School on Sept. 3 as staff, teachers and administrators filed into the auditorium for Superintendent’s Conference Day. To kick the morning off, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Dr. Rory Manning introduced and welcomed eight new district administrators, including Assistant Superintendent for Business Sharon Donnelly, who presented a brief breakdown of a proposed $20.4 million bond to improve infrastructure across the district’s schools.

The district also welcomed Washington Drive Primary School’s new Principal Kathy McNally and Assistant Principal Kerry Neira; Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School’s Principal Mary Williams and Assistant Principal Andrea Horowitz; and Oldfield Middle School Assistant Principal Maribeth Corr, who will also serve as the district’s guidance administrator.

Lastly, Dr. Manning introduced the district’s new Assistant Director for Pupil Personnel Services Rose Scammel and Special Education Chairperson Anne Marie Dunn.

He then delved into a few of the district’s new initiatives, including a one-on-one Chromebook initiative for ninth graders, which is expected to expand to eighth grade in 2021.

Additionally, he explained that district administrators are working with stakeholders to develop a mission statement to reflect what the board of education describes as the district’s three pillars of success: innovation, curriculum and finance.

The remainder of the day was tailored to individual departments, including music and art, special education, physical education and English as a New Language. Department heads had an opportunity to discuss the upcoming school year with staff.

To close out the day, teachers had an opportunity to set up their classrooms and prepare for the first day of school on Sept. 4.

End red-light camera No such thing as a free lunch ticket program In 2010, Suffolk County hired a contractor to install cameras at certain dangerous, traffic-light intersections with the expressed purpose of improving public safety, since running red lights is a major cause of crashes, injuries and death. Currently, 100 camera locations are used for traffic light enforcement in Suffolk County.

To say those cameras have been controversial is an incredible understatement. In theory, if people were automatically issued traffic tickets when cameras detect violations, then people would be less likely to run a red light. However, the effectiveness of the program is hotly debated, both nationally, as well as locally.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, different research methods, when applied, have been used to draw different conclusions. This is the case in Suffolk County, where a recent $250,000 study showed accidents actually increased by about 60 percent at the intersections with cameras, while the number of crashes with injuries decreased, and the total number of fatalities remained the same.

Despite conclusive findings, the study’s author, L.K. McLean Associates of Brookhaven, has recommended that legislators continue the program, because the combined statistics of fatalities and injuries decreased overall. The Republican caucus disagrees. They call the program “a money grab.”

The issue, though, is not totally partisan. Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said she was extremely underwhelmed with the report, saying it gave no indication that the cameras prevented crashes.

The county explicitly states on its website that making money is not the main purpose of the camera program: “The goal of photo enforcement is to deter violators, not catch them.”

But the program in nine years has generated about $190 million.

Under the current system, violators pay a $50 fine, when a camera catches them running a red light, plus a $30 administration fee, plus $25, if violations are paid late. According to contract terms, the county’s vendor Conduent gets 42 percent of citation revenue. In 2018, for example, the county is estimated to receive $27.5 million from the program with $8.8 million being fees for services, most of which are going to Conduent. The balance of the revenue is transferred into a police district account and is used to finance its operations.

The red-light issue should not be political — it should be about public safety. Without clear safety data to justify its existence, we at TBR News Media believe the program should be discontinued at the end of 2019.

If there is a financial benefit to the program for the police district, these interests should be made more apparent, so the public good is understood. If revenue is in fact driving support for this program, then the county needs to compare multiple vendor offers.

A 42 percent share of revenue paid to an outside vendor seems incredibly high. So is the program’s administration fee, which is estimated at $9.5 million for 2018. It’s unclear what this fee is for exactly. The county needs more transparency on this topic.

It seems the current platform of the numerous Democratic contenders is “free” whatever you want. They are competing with each other to outgive, moving their posts so far left that it has become an unrecognizable party.

An expression comes to our minds: “There is no such thing as a free lunch.”

And so it goes with the spouting of these politicians with freebies. Free college, even for illegals — how do you feel if you have to take from your 401(k) or take out a home equity loan? Free housing — didn’t we go through a housing crisis created by bad policies? Medical benefits for all Americans and illegals — did you know it takes up to four hours to get an ambulance in Britain? Who hasn’t experienced the inefficiency at a Department of Motor Vehicles? Why would we ever think to relinquish our health care to a bloated government whose track record is embarrassing?

Their plan, to put it in a nutshell (no nuts for us) is a transfer of debt from those who cannot afford it to the rest of us.

As a result of the policies of President Donald Trump (R), the economy is doing well, as the media is using the new buzzword: recession. Sadly many neverTrumpers are wishing it for our country.

(To use the word recession you need to have two quarters in a negative reading.)

Looks like old tricks of misinformation and fear tactics are being used again.

Try floating with CNN, MSNBC and NBC — simultaneously they are using brainwashing tactics repeating the same sound bites. So it went from Russian collusion to obstruction, to impeachment, to racism and now on to recession. What will be next?

Trump’s concerns are for the people who fought for us — our veterans; the people who protect us — our police and firefighters; and for the people who actually worked for the past 50 years and contributed to this country through their employment taxes paying into Social Security, Medicare and unemployment.

On the other hand, we have Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) worrying

about toothbrushes and cots on the border when her own state has cities overrun with the homeless defecating on the streets, living in tents and spreading lice, typhus and a myriad of other diseases.

What’s more harmful to the environment: plastic straws or rampant disease?

Remember repeatedly hearing there was no crisis at the border? Now that it is exposed, and with no apology, the purpose of a border wall is to get these immigrants to go through the portals to be screened appropriately. Hence, to prevent the drug cartels and sex trafficking that is a real humanitarian crisis.

Our father, who left the Democratic Party years ago, used to say that our history books were trying to rewrite history. He graduated from St. John’s University School of Law and was an avid reader of history.

Remember, don’t be fooled by “voodoo economics.”

Red-light cameras discriminate The Suffolk County Red Light Camera Program discriminates against the working class people. Cameras are not installed in affluent neighborhoods in Suffolk County. I found a disproportional amount of cameras in the lowincome neighborhoods in the Town of Babylon, Town of Islip and Town of Brookhaven. There are no cameras in East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island and Southold. Within the Town Of Huntington, there are no cameras in Lloyd Harbor, Northport, Centerport and other affluent towns. The people who live in places like Brentwood, Bay Shore and Coram are responsible for paying this unfair tax while the people who live in Quogue, East Hampton and Sag Harbor never receive red-light camera tickets.

The red-light camera program targets the most vulnerable people in our society. Are the people who live in wealthy neighborhoods better drivers?

Is this why there are no cameras in their towns? The Town of Islip has 24 RLC intersections. Some of our legislators falsely claim to be heroes of the disenfranchised. It is the poor neighborhoods that have the majority of these cameras and helping the county generate $30 million in annual revenue.

I hope this discrimination ends Sept. 4 when the Suffolk County Legislature votes on whether or not to continue this red-light camera program.

I had one of those moments when I wanted to share all the right pieces of advice for our daughter as we drove her to college. Would she even hear the pearls of wisdom I was trying not to drop from the spoon?

My first thought was to tell her that, “You get out of it what you put into it.” Of course everyone who passes the requisite classes gets a degree. What differentiates one set of experiences from another is the amount of energy, effort and dedication from the student.

I scratched that one off the list because she’d heard it too many times before. If that lesson were going to make it into the cup, it had plenty of time to do so.

Then, it occurred to me to tell her to study smarter and harder, in that order. I wanted her to put in genuine effort — see the previous piece of unspoken advice — but I also felt

that she needed to focus her efforts on specific chapters or concepts. Exams don’t tend to demand total recall of every word on every page in a textbook. Try to figure out, perhaps with some help from upper-class people or your resident adviser, what are the most important ideas for each class.

I considered telling her to appreciate and learn from her mistakes. I had suggested that homily in her academic life, on an athletic field and in her social interactions. I couldn’t possibly say that on the ride to college because her response, at best, would be some version of, “Daaaaaaaddd!” No, clearly, telling her to learn from her mistakes would be a mistake.

Maybe, just as I contemplated another recommendation, the clear skies on the drive ahead were a sign that I was on the right track. I wanted to tell her to get to know her professors, regardless of the size of the class. In fact, the larger the class, the greater the need to walk up

to her teachers, introduce herself and express an eagerness to learn about a subject this person had spent a professional career teaching.

Maybe I should also tell her not to fall behind.

Catching up becomes a regular struggle when the professor has moved away from the lessons you’re trying to process and commit to memory.

By the time we arrived at school, I hadn’t shared any of those words of wisdom or fortune cookie advice, depending on your perspective, because our daughter slept during much of the car ride. Carrying boxes, bins and bags up the stairs became the primary focus, as did trying not to sweat too profusely over everything I was lugging into her room.

As she was scrambling to figure out how to attach pictures of her friends to a wall, it was clear the timing wasn’t ideal to offer advice.

Maybe it’s best this way: She’s now reached an age and a stage in life when she’s got to figure out how to fill her own cup with water.

Billi behind as they go back to mainland China to visit the grandmother, but she follows anyway and asks the expected questions: “What about her individual rights? Isn’t it illegal to withhold such information? What if she has some last details she would want to take care of if she knew she were dying?”

But no. The rest of the family agrees to enter into a charade in which they act as if the reason they are all coming back to China is to celebrate the marriage of the grandson, who has in fact been seriously dating a Japanese girl for only three months.

The grandmother, of course, is overjoyed at the prospect of seeing her scattered family return home and of hosting a wedding celebration, although she is not so sure about this Japanese addition to the family. And despite their sad faces and behind-her-back anguish, grandma is persuaded that the return is as presented. She goes about arranging for a bountiful reception for family and many friends.

The Chinese explanation for the deception serves as stark contrast in the film between the cultures: Chinese people aren’t regarded as individuals to the extent that they are so

clearly in America, but rather as a member of a family structure and a social community.

One’s life is part of a whole, and no one wants to tell grandma that she will soon be leaving this world and bring her sadness in her last days. In China, a diagnosis of cancer means certain death, we are told.

Yet despite the depression felt by the family, their love for their matriarch shines through, and there are the universal family interactions of anger, laughter, grief, memories and regrets.

The film is both deeply personal and can be universally appreciated for its sweetness and familiarity.

China has modernized physically. Billi finds that her old neighborhood has been replaced by a forest of high rise apartment buildings, none quite completed yet, and modern highways link the city. That is a measure of how long she has been separated from her roots. But can there be a “good” lie? Billi will effortlessly lie on her phone to her grandma about whether she is wearing a hat to ward off the cold in Brooklyn, but she is deeply troubled trying to bridge the cultural big lie that is at the heart of this film.

When is a ‘lie’ a good lie?

We saw “The Farewell,” and we both loved

it. I checked it out first, and it is probably the only movie I have ever seen with a 99 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes. In spite of having such high expectations, we were not disappointed.

The movie is an independent Chinese film, largely autobiographical from Lulu Wang, with subtitles and speaks to several themes all centered around one peg. I won’t be revealing anything that would spoil the experience for you by saying that the plot revolves around a lie. In fact, at the beginning of the film, we are told that what we are about to see is based on “an actual lie.” The deception is as follows. Grandma Nai Nai is terminally ill, and everyone wants to see her one final time.

But the problem is that she has not been told that she has malignant spots on her lungs. Her X-rays reportedly show “benign shadows,” or so she is made to believe. The immediate family do not want her to know the truth about her condition.

Her granddaughter Billi, who grew up in New York City and is thoroughly Americanized, doesn’t agree with that decision. The rest of the family tries to leave
