Basketball tournament brings Greenlawn community together

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Town of Huntington hosted its fifth annual Co-Ed Basketball Tournament at Coral Park in Greenlawn July 21.

Teens between the ages of 12 and 18 came out for a number of friendly half-court games in a round-robin tournament. Those games were followed by an alumni game with teams made up of graduates from area high schools. While the kids played, event organizers stood on the sidelines and shouted advice and encouragement to the young players on the court.

“We do this every year to keep kids out

of trouble,” tournament organizer Vernon Lowe said. “Somebody did it for me when I was growing up, and somebody should do it for them.”

Several kids were given awards for being recognized as Most Valuable Player by the tournament organizers. Huntington High School student Omari Stephen, who plays on the boys junior varsity basketball team, and Leisaan Hibbert, of Dix Hills, were awarded MVP for the youth tournament.

Damique Reddick, a 2016 graduate of John H. Glenn High School in Elwood, won MVP for the alumni game.

Lifelong Huntington firefighter to lead 175th anniversary parade Combating fires in Huntington has come a long way from the use of leather buckets and wooden ladders over the last 175 years.

The Huntington Fire Department will be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the volunteer fire company’s formation July 28 with a parade kicking off at 4 p.m. from town hall to its Leverich Place station. The department’s oldest active living member, Henry Gerdes, has been selected as the parade’s grand marshal.

“Huntington has grown tremendously and so has the fire department,” he said, since its founding in 1843. “You have to grow with them.”

Gerdes, 98, has volunteered his time to help the Huntington Fire Department since he was a boy working in his family-run ice cream and candy shop on Main Street. He recalled pouring cups of coffee for volunteer firemen heading on their way to work only to learn they couldn’t always hear the firehouse’s siren.

“If the wind blew the wrong way, they couldn’t hear it,” said Gerdes, who worked down the street from the Main Street station.

“I would have to call them up, having to use a nickel at my pay phone.”

He alerted volunteers of fires using pay phone No. 28 in his family’s shop. After a few months, the process improved when telephone operators learned of what he was doing and stepped in to help direct firefighters directly to the site of the fire to meet the trucks there.

Gerdes officially joined the Huntington Fire Department in December 1939. Upon returning from serving during World War II he rose to the rank of captain. The 1950s and ’60s were a busy time for the firehouse, he said, as the town was rapidly expanding and changing.

“Daytime fires would be brush fires or nothing,” Gerdes said. “But come night or the winter, everyone had coal stoves and fireplaces. There were a lot of chimney fires.”

In 1959, the fire station was relocated from Main Street to its current home on Leverich Place.

“There used to be no traffic to worry about,” Gerdes said. “They had to move the Main Street firehouse because it was impossible to get to with trucks and cars.”

Firefighting methods and the department’s equipment have drastically improved since the early 1900s, according to Gerdes, who emphasized that while the department purchased top-of-the-line trucks the volunteer’s safety was treated very differently.

“We had no masks, no tanks and you walked into a fire as you were, you were lucky if you had a raincoat,” he said. “The first one on the truck gets first selection.”

While Huntington’s Main Street and New York Avenue business district had fire hydrants installed in the late 1800s, Gerdes said firefighters often had to go looking for a wrench to open it up. For residential fires, volunteers had to locate the nearest well or pond to drain water to extinguish the flames.

“When I first joined, they didn’t have 50 fires a year,” he said. “Now, they have more

In 2017, Huntington Fire Department volunteers responded to 655 calls including emergencies, car crashes, fires and automated alarms with October being the busiest month.

The department has grown to consist of three companies: the engine, hose, and hook and ladder units.

One thing that’s remained unchanged over the years, according to Gerdes, has been the need to ensure there are enough active volunteer firefighters, and now, first responders, to ensure residents’ safety.

“Recruitment is a constant issue,” he said.

“We were always looking for volunteers.

Today, they are still looking for volunteers.”

The lifelong firefighter warned that

it’s not all “fun and games” but work that requires significant training and irregular hours, including late nights and holidays.

Yet, he has taken pride in serving the department and being part of its history.

“The fire department I belong to is the best,” Gerdes said. “They do a good job, they work hard, and they do the right thing. I’m very proud of them and anything I did to help them along the way.”

Residents are invited to join in the 175th gala celebration from 5 to 11 p.m. following the parade at the Leverich Place fire station featuring complimentary bounce houses and slides for kids, pony rides, a dunk tank and other carnival-like activities. Entertainment will be provided by the Little Wilson Band.

When Huntington resident Kim Libertini isn’t teaching, she’s working on building a digital social network for others, like herself, who are coping with personal loss and grief.

Libertini found help dealing with her personal loss through private messaging with Robynne Boyd, of Atlanta, and now the two have created a tool they hope will help others do the same. The plan for Goodgrief, a mobile app that allows grieving individuals to anonymous connect and chat one-on-one with each other, started in late 2016.

“I had lost my partner,” Libertini said.

“It was the summer of 2015. I was in the process of navigating the grief path. A friend that knew my partner that passed also knew Robynne, who at the time was going through a different form of grief.”

Boyd’s marriage had ended before she learned that her mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. A mutual friend felt Libertini could understand Boyd’s situation, as the Huntington resident had been previously divorced and her mother had died of illness. So he introduced them in a group text message.

“Eventually we just privately started chatting,” Libertini said. “We kind of navigated our different grief paths for the course of a year, just through texting, and in a year we built a friendship backward.”

The two women started talking about their grief and losses first, according to Libertini, but as their relationship grew, they started sharing surface-level details with each other about their families and day-to-day lives.

“As we were developing this friendship through texting and this support system for each other, we realized we were onto something and that we should offer this to other people,” Libertini said.

After researching the concept online, Boyd and Libertini failed to find a private one-on-one service — not a Facebook support group or blog. Together, they moved to fund a new app through a partnership with Winnona Partners, an Atlanta-based mobile developer.

Users of the Goodgrief app create a profile including details such as their age, type of loss, who they lost, how long ago the event occurred and can note extra features such as his or her religious affiliation if it is important.

Each individual can then choose if he or she wishes to make a connection based on factors such as someone of the same gender or grieving from the same type of loss. Personal contact information, such as phone number or email, is not revealed by the app unless users choose to exchange it after connecting.

The app has had more than 700 downloads and 500 active users since its soft launch in January. Boyd and Libertini have utilized users’ feedback to improve the experience, revising and adding more features to the app.

Boyd, a writer, came up with the name Goodgrief.

“Goodgrief is clearly a term we use when we feel overwhelmed and as if there is too much to cope with,” Libertini said. “Simultaneously Goodgrief can mean that there is good to be found.”

Using social media, Libertini said the women have been trying to spread the word of Goodgrief, and hope the app’s community will continue to grow. She wanted to see the app help others, like it’s helped her.

“It’s been a silver lining,” Libertini said.

“When you experience a tragic loss it’s often

very difficult to accept what’s happening. I think it’s given me some type of purpose.

It’s given me focus, and it’s given me the ability to see something that’s very terrible that’s happened to me as something good for someone else.”

When asked if the two co-founders have plans to meet face-to-face in future, Libertini said, “We’ll probably save that for Oprah.”

Huntington teen starts petition for Breezy skate park A Huntington Station teen is seeking his community’s support to create a safe place where he and other skateboarders can safely catch some fresh air.

Daenys Cruz, 18, has launched a Change. org petition asking Huntington Town officials to consider constructing a skate park at Breezy Park in Huntington Station. What once started as a classroom assignment has slowly turned into a movement, garnering more than 520 signatures as of July 25.

“I think skateboarding is a healthy habit,” Cruz said. “It’s also a community where you will find people look out for one another.”

The 2018 Walt Whitman High School graduate said the idea came to him in English class, where he had to write an argumentative essay. Cruz said he started skateboarding nine years ago after he was diagnosed with type I diabetes, commonly called juvenile diabetes.

“Skateboarding gave me a way to keep myself healthy,” he said. “With diabetes, you have to stay active to maintain a good quality of life.”

He started by practicing in an abandoned parking lot but quickly took to skateboarding at Breezy Park, as he could get to it from his house without having to beg his parents for a ride, he said. Its pathways and curbs provided

“Skateboarders view architecture differently,” Cruz said. “Some people will see a set of stairs, but to us it’s something to jump off of.”

Cruz said his petition seeks a safer environment for skateboarders by keeping them out of traffic on busy residential streets and off commercial properties. He admitted to having shop owners threatening to call local police

on him while practicing in their parking lots, looking to get away from passing motorists.

“I had a friend who ended up getting hit by a car,” the teen said. “It was one of the scariest moments, because he almost lost his life.”

The Town of Huntington currently has two skate parks: Greenlawn Skate Park for BMX bike riders, scooters, rollerbladers and skateboarders; and Veterans Skate Park for rollerbladers and skateboarders only off

Bellerose Avenue in East Northport.

Veterans Skate Park, which was built in 2011 by Site Design Group and California Skateparks, cost the town $420,000 and was undertaken as part of a $8.3 million park renovation, according to town spokeswoman Lauren Lembo.

Cruz said he’s visited both skate parks, but there is no available public transportation and they can be too difficult for teens to get to without a ride. Greenlawn Skate Park has restricted hours to keep skateboarders, scooters and rollerbladers separated from motocross bike riders, only permitting skateboarding in the afternoon. Cruz said it makes practicing difficult for older teens, like himself, who may work at a job until the late afternoon or early evening.

“We do not ask to make a huge skateboarding plaza, but a place where us skateboarders of Huntington can make a place to ourselves,” Cruz’s petition reads.

In speaking with others, the teen said he would like to see a street-style skate park that provides a flat, smooth surface with curbs, ledges, maybe a few small ramps or set of stairs.

“If there was a place we could come every day, it would be a blessing,” Cruz said. “We could really take it to our full potential.”

The Huntington Station teen said he’s reached out to the town via email and hopes to present his petition to town officials at an upcoming board meeting.

TOWN Huntington seeks $62.5K grant to become Climate Smart As the Town of Huntington is entrenched in a lengthy legal battle with Long Island Power Authority, its elected officials are looking to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and move to sources of renewable energy.

Huntington town board unanimously agreed to apply for a $62,500 grant from New York State’s Climate Smart Communities Grant Program at its July 17 meeting.

If the funding is approved, the town will move forward with a study of its current energy use and how to transition to using more renewable energy resources.

“There is a nationwide movement of towns pledging to go renewable by 2050 and we want Huntington to be one of those towns,” Jenny Strandberg said.

Strandberg is one of many Mothers Out Front, a grassroots community organization pushing for a transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy, who asked Huntington officials to move forward with the study and renew their pledge to protect the environment.

“If everyone on the planet lived like the average American, you would need five planets,” said Jennifer Browns, a professor of sociology of LIU Post and Mothers Out

Front member. “We need a commitment to 100 percent renewable energy and we need it now.”

Huntington first adopted the state’s Climate Smart Communities pledge in 2012.

By taking the pledge, the town made several promises to its residents including trying to “decrease energy use” and “build a climatesmart community.”

Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said in order for the town to become Climate Smart Community certified, it would need to hire a consultant to perform a Government Operations Greenhouse Gas Inventory to assess what emissions its producing, a 100 percent Renewable Energy Feasibility Study and then a Capital Phase-In Plan to determine and set a schedule to meet the town’s greenhouse gas reduction goals. The estimated cost for those steps is approximately $125,000, according to Lupinacci. The town is seeking funding for half through the state grant.

“The sooner we get it in, the more we can beat people to the top of the line to make sure we show our commitment and we are ready to roll on it,” Lupinacci said.

The program requires the town provide 50 percent matching funds, for which it will pull $62,500 from the its Environmental Open Space & Park Fund Review Advisory Committee’s Green Project Fund. The com-

Both East Hampton and Southampton townships on the East End have already become Climate Smart Communities certified by going through this process, according to Huntington resident Tara Kotlia. She said she would like to see the Town of Huntington become the third.

“Let me state clearly, it is LIPA’s policy to transition to renewable energy 50 percent by 2030,” Gollon said.

He stressed that LIPA and the power companies will continue to push renewable energy as the future, and encouraged the town to do the same.

“It’s clear different communities must engage, set examples for each other and move toward clean energy, renewable energy as soon as possible,” Gollon said.

“Huntington must continue to be a leader.”

DEC expands artificial reef off Sunken Meadow

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Parts of the decommissioned historic Tappan Zee Bridge will live on by providing a home for new life off the shores of Sunken Meadow State Park.

New York State officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation were joined by Town of Smithtown officials in overseeing the expansion of Smithtown’s artificial reef off the shores of Sunken Meadow State Park July 19.

“The sustainability and health of New York’s marine resources is critical to communities along our shores, and by constructing

these reef habitats, we are investing in a stronger, more diverse marine ecosystem,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said when announcing the project in April.

DEC workers lowered two decommissioned state Canal Corp. vessels and a barge of recycled steel material from the state Department of Transportation’s bridge construction projects into the waters of the Long Island Sound.

“Growing up fishing with my dad right here in Kings Park, I cannot help but feel a little nostalgic,” Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) said. “Knowing that in just a few days this reef will already be home to a variety of species from blackfish and black

sea bass to crustaceans and mollusks is exciting for our ecosystems and local fisherman and divers.”

All of the recycled materials have been inspected and decontaminated, stripped of hazardous substances from asbestos and petroleum to paints and other possible human carcinogens, prior to being deployed, according to the DEC. The work on the Smithtown reef is part of the largest expansion of New York’s network of artificial reefs in state history, according to the governor’s office. Smithtown is one of 12 artificial reef sites in the state that is managed by the DEC’s Marine Artificial Reef Program. It is located 1.6 nautical miles from

shore and lies at a depth of 38 to 40 feet, covering a span of about 3 acres.

Other artificial reef sites that are scheduled to be expanded as part of this project include those off Fire Island, Hempstead, Moriches, Rockaway and Shinnecock, using more than 43,000 cubic yards of recycled bridge material and 5,900 yards of jetty rock. All construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.

The artificial reef construction is part of Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-of-state sportsmen and to boost tourism throughout the state.

COUNTY POLICE Sheriff talks issues during exclusive Seven months into the term of Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D-Lake Grove), several issues have become top priorities. He sat for an exclusive interview at the TBR News Media office with the editorial staff July 20 to detail the road ahead.

Staffing issues

The Sheriff’s Office is short staffed specifically due to officers retiring or leaving for higher paying jobs elsewhere, according to Toulon.

“I’m almost signing one to two retirement letters a day,” he said. “We just lost two — one going to [Metropolitan Transportation Authority] police and one going to the New York City Police Academy. I’m expecting to lose two in the near future — more going to other law enforcement [jobs].”

The department is short on 76 mandated posts that the two county corrections facilities are supposed to have. This has led to an increase in overtime for existing corrections personnel. Toulon said he sees the low starting salary for Suffolk County corrections officers as the primary driver of the staff shortage. Those in the positions are paid $30,000 per year initially, reaching about $76,000 after 12 years. Starting salaries in Nassau County or New York City corrections are about $10,000 per year more.

Toulon said 30 people will be graduating from the county academy Aug. 8 to fill some of the vacancies.

A pay raise would have to be approved by the Suffolk County Legislature, though Toulon said he supports it.

School security

As the occurrences of school shootings seemingly increase nationally, especially after the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida, security has become a hot topic among school districts and communities. The Sheriff’s Office is working on the issue as well.

Toulon said getting everybody on the same page when it comes to securing schools is a tough but essential job, which requires coordination between school security, police departments and the sheriff’s office.

“When you are going into these schools you frequently realize some of these schools have armed security, some have unarmed security, and some have security that are armed because they hired retired law enforcement, and it’s not publicized,” Toulon said.

School security officers obviously do not have standards as far as uniforms across county school districts. Further confusing local law enforcement, each school might have different protocols in engaging an active shooter, whether they will actively engage the shooter with a firearm or focus on getting the children to safety.

Toulon said he and his officers have gone into schools at the request of the districts to perform security assessments. So far 10 out of 69 school districts in Suffolk County have taken up the Sheriff’s Office on the offer.

Toulon said an ideal setup might be having standardized training for all school districts and school security officers in the county, not only so they would know what to do in a school fire, bomb or shooting scenario, but also because it would train them to interact

The Sheriff’s Office plans to host a forum for Suffolk County school superintendents Aug. 16 at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to talk broadly about school security and to share ideas.

Dealing with gangs and ICE

Toulon said that while county jails only hold people charged with local crimes, they do work with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency when it comes to some inmates.

“The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t profile people,” Toulon said. “If you blow a stop sign or a red light, we are going to pull you over. The people in our custody that have [ICE] detainers are not good people. I wouldn’t want them on our streets — I wouldn’t care what their status is.”

Toulon stressed that the Sheriff’s Office does not participate on any ICE raids. He advised the immigrant community to know their Miranda rights, that they do not have to communicate to police without a lawyer, and that anyone concerned about an arrest could contact the Sheriff’s Office.

Many people in local communities are concerned about activities perpetrated by the local incarnations of the MS-13 gang.

Several high-profile gang murders were prosecuted in the past few years, including the 2017 murder of two young girls in Brentwood, complicating community-law enforcement relations and heating up a polarized, politically based national discourse. Stories of abuses of power carried out by the federal agency, mostly in areas nearer to the southern border, have not been representative of the Sheriff’s Office dealings with ICE, Toulon said, adding that he would not tolerate inappropriate behavior from any uniformed officer within the facilities he oversees, be them staff under his purview or otherwise.

Toulon said comments made by President Donald Trump (R) on the matter have made his job tougher, especially when dealing with local immigrant communities.

“The tensions that I see in the immigrant community come from what they see going on in the rest of the country,” Toulon said.

“The fact that our current president tweets about it and makes comments about a whole population — that is not fair. It makes my job a lot more difficult.”

Asharoken police rescue paddle boarder Asharoken police rescued the lives of two paddle boarders this last weekend.

The Asharoken Police Department received a call for a paddle boarder in distress about 300 yards off shore in the Long Island Sound July 22 at approximately 11:33 a.m.

Office Sid Lynn, patroling on Asharoken Police Boat Marine One, was dispatched by officer James Cox on shore to find a woman reported to be hanging onto a buoy, according to police. Lynn handed a life jacket to Manuela Uribe, 29, of Brooklyn, and helped her to board the boat.

Uribe had been out paddle boarding when

high winds left her unable to get back to shore, according to police. The woman was uninjured and was transported back to Soundview Boat Ramp with her paddle board.

It was the second day in a row that Lynn assisted a paddle boarder who was in distress, according to the police department. On July 21, the police officer spotted a man sitting on his paddle board roughly 300 yards off the tip of Sand City in Eaton’s Neck. East Northport resident Kyle Byrne, 20, was brought onto the police boat and safely transported back to Hobart Beach, according to police.

Sheila Saks, Dix Hills civic leader, dies at 75 The Dix Hills community is mourning the loss of a civic leader and activist.

Sheila Saks, a 48-year Dix Hills resident, died of endometrial cancer July 18. She was 75.

“It’s a tremendous loss to our community,” Suffolk County Legislator Susan Berland (D-Dix Hills) said. “She was irreplaceable.”

Saks was best known in the community as the former president of House Beautiful Civic Association of Dix Hills for more than 20 years, starting in the early 1980s.

“The work she did to better the community, everything she did was for others, very selfless and was about making people’s lives better and making communities lives better,” Berland said. “It was never about herself.”

The legislator said Saks served as a friend and a mentor to her and many others.

Saks was born in lower Manhattan. She earned her undergraduate degree at the State University of New Paltz before getting her master’s degree from Teacher College of Columbia University.

Saks first worked as a first-grade teacher in Mamaroneck for five years, before becoming proprietor and co-owner of Ben Freedman Gents Furnishing, a haberdashery shop on the lower East Side of Manhattan founded by her father, Ben Freedman. In 1964, she married

Sheila Saks her husband, Avinoam.

She was best known for her passion for preserving quality of life in Dix Hills and opposing commercial development.

In addition to her husband, Saks is survived by her son, Simon, and daughter, Dawn Mintzer, and five grandchildren.

A funeral was held July 22 in Woodbury.

Her family will be sitting Jewish shiva at the family home in Dix Hills through the evening of July 26.

Don’t forget efforts to shore up school security It’s the end of July so it’s likely the minds of students, administrators and parents have drifted far away from the hallways of their schools, away from school board meetings and discussions about funding safety improvements. It’s understandable. But following an in-office, exclusive interview with Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. (D) July 20, county residents should sleep well knowing he has allowed himself no such break.

Hardening schools for the worst-case scenario — an intruder entering a local school with the means and intent to impose lethal, widespread harm — has become a top priority for districts across the country since the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead. In the absence of substantive action on tightening gun laws with commonsense reform coming from the increasingly feckless Washington anytime soon, local municipalities and schools have had to get creative.

This week, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) signed a bill permitting the county to pursue bond funding for a mobile application that government employees and school administrators will be able to download and use to directly contact law enforcement in the event of a shooting at a school or government building. In the aftermath of Parkland, Bellone announced an initiative that would allow districts interested in participating to grant access to school security systems to the Suffolk County Police Department, so that in the case of an emergency, law enforcement can see exactly what’s going on in the school. New York State passed its own set of bills in the spring as well, mostly geared toward allocating funds to districts interested in securing infrastructure or hiring additional security or mental health personnel.

These plans are a great start, especially, again, since we would all turn blue in the face holding our breath waiting for Congress. But Toulon raised some issues that seemed to us like they needed to be heard.

When asked if he could wave a magic wand and grant one thing to all 69 of Suffolk’s school districts to make them more secure, he identified establishing uniform practices countywide for training security — armed or otherwise — so that responders have a better feel for what they’re walking into should one of these dark days strike close to home. Uncertainty about what to expect between police and school district security should be the last thing either should be worried about in the midst of a frantic mission to save lives.

Further, Toulon said he has made his office available to districts interested in having their security practices assessed on a voluntary basis. So far, he said just 10 of the 69 districts have taken him up on the offer. We’d like to see that number reach 100 percent by the end of this year.

In addition, the sheriff’s office plans to host a forum for Suffolk school superintendents Aug. 16 at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to talk broadly about school security and to share ideas. The offices of the sheriff and county executive have not let this issue fade away during the summer months, and we hope schools haven’t forgotten either.

Millenials: the silent majority

Since well before the election of President Donald Trump (R), his base had branded themselves as “the silent majority.” As we know, they claim to represent the views of Americans that haven’t voted in years. But I take issue with this usage of the term. For, in reality, the silent majority in America is not middle America, but the youth of America.

You see, the 18 to 44 age bracket makes up about 36 percent of the voting eligible population. But consistently less than 50 percent of millennials vote in elections. This means that they are silent in terms of real political impact. However, looking at the recent engagement, we can see that this year will be different. Spurred by children

too young even to vote, between 500,000 and 800,000 people showed up in Washington, D.C., to protest gun violence in this country.

All across the nation, countless satellite marches took place.

Millenials and young people in general tend to be issue oriented, not party oriented. As Kristin Lynch, a regional spokesperson for the Clinton 2016 campaign, put it, “You’re having millenials not wanting to be categorized in boxes.”

Gun violence prevention is one of those issues. Led by movements such as March for Our Lives, we are ready to see change in this country. For too long, politicians have ignored us because we don’t decide the fates of their jobs. This year, that will change. This year, we

won’t be silent any longer.

And that is why, on Sunday, July 29, we are having a studentorganized Rally to End Gun Violence at Breezy Park in Huntington Station. Working in conjunction with the office of Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove), students of Long Island are planning a rally to showcase our strength and resolve. We’re lighting up the “bat signal,” so to speak, because even if the school year is over, our work is far from done. If you care about this issue, come out in support.

And most importantly: Vote this November! We are coming out in force. Watch for us.

If you want health care, replace R’s Recent reports emphasize the number of individuals on Long Island with cancer as higher than virtually anywhere in New York. But that hasn’t prevented our leaders from engaging in continual efforts to demolish our health care system, voting over and over to make it harder for people with cancer to get the treatment they need.

Our leaders are ignoring the needs of Long Islanders. Instead, they are taking the positions of Washington Republicans, as well as the insurance industry, who only care about their profit margins. So, when you’re wondering why your premiums and prescription drug costs are going up, while the quality of information coming from the

medical community, about your condition, is going down, you don’t need to look any further than our present leaders, worrying more about their donor class than the health of Long Islanders.

At the height of World War II, in March of 1943, then Soviet Foreign Minister, V.M. Molotov, sent a highly detailed written denial of

Soviet culpability for the execution of 15,000 to 20,000 Polish officers and intelligentsia in the Katyn Forest several years earlier. Besides their denial, the Soviets went on to accuse the Germans of the very same crime. There were skeptics, but Churchill and Roosevelt accepted the Russian denial. In 1990, when Western researchers gained access to secret KGB

files, they found that the original Soviet denial of guilt was a total lie; the Soviets, themselves, had perpetrated what has become known as the infamous Katyn Forest Massacre. Extremely strong and powerful lies are standard operating procedure for ex-KGB operatives.

The humble, singular goal of a speed bump

I

f I could only talk, I could tell some exciting stories.

For starters, many people think of me as a nuisance. No, I’m not a politician, journalist or lawyer. And, no, I don’t write parking tickets or tell you why you should join my religion and how I’ll promise you bliss in this life or the next one.

I’m much closer to earth.

In fact, you could say that I’m closer to earth than almost everyone.

You see, I’m a speed bump.

bump, designed to force cars racing through school areas, regions filled with small children playing on and around streets, and people approaching dangerous curves to slow down.

Kids don’t start hating me, just as they don’t start hating most things. In fact, small children often enjoy the miniature carnival ride I provide when their parents roll over me during a stroll. Sometimes, parents and children make excited noises as they approach, with their voices rising and falling as they reach the top of my back and then come back down.

As children get older, they like to ride their bicycles, skateboards, hover boards and scooters over me, often at high speeds, as they hope to catch some air. I’m like a skateboarding park with training wheels for children who haven’t graduated to more advanced, and dangerous, versions of high-speed obstacle courses.

Bus drivers sometimes use me to distract a raucous collection of chil-

dren who are eager to get home. In fact, one of my speed bump friends on Main Street in Setauket described how kids at the back of the bus bounced up and down on their seats, hoping to reach my friend at exactly the right time so that the force of the bump caused them to launch into the air.

But then, as they get older, some kids find me as frustrating as their parents do. They want to go faster, because they’re late to meet friends, need to get to a job interview, or can’t be bothered looking at signs on the side of the road that introduce me. They sometimes call me a speed bump, speed hump or even a speed cushion.

They reach me at speeds that are dangerous for a car’s alignment, axle or wheels. The ones that race too quickly over me often shout something unpleasant in my general direction, especially if they hear a crunch or a crack in the car below them.

But, you see, more often than not, that means I’ve accomplished my

goal. If they remember to slow down next time, they will protect their cars and, more importantly, the people who live, walk, work and, best of all, play in the area.

They may not think of the younger versions of themselves, or about their own children, as they slow down, but I don’t care. I’m not there to protect their car or to help them get somewhere more rapidly.

If they choose another route — maybe one that involves a highway — I’ve also gotten them away from local roads. Speed bumps like me serve a purpose, whether or not people enjoy me and the stripes they sometimes put on me.

And, as you know, school will be starting in a few weeks. I know because I’ve seen some of the backto-school signs that pass slowly over me on the way to the stores.

Maybe, some day, self-driving cars will automatically slow down through areas where people are out and about. Until that day comes, I’m here for you and your children.

skip alongside. It was at those times that I sensed something was wrong.

People would smile down at me but then stare at my sister.

Then I heard the word and asked my mother about it. It was the first time I ever saw my mother flinch.

I was immediately hushed and told not to use that word again. I didn’t until I was in my teens.

The word my mother, a courageous woman of tremendous fortitude and intelligence, recoiled from was RETARDED. My sister Maxine was, and is, retarded.

My sister was not accepted among “normal” people and never would be. She was a social disgrace.

And all the while, she laughed and played. She was able to talk now and would often say, “I love you.”

Reality forced itself on my mother when she went to register my sister for public school in first grade.

The principal, a blunt, middle‐aged woman, took my mother aside and stated simply, “Maxine cannot go to a normal school. She’s retarded.

Just keep her home. Retarded children don’t live very long, anyway.”

My sister was lucky. She had a family that would always look after her. But what is to happen to those others? Retarded children become retarded adults. And then what?

What happens to them when their parents die and there is no one to pick up the burden? What happens to those who have the advantage of the latest programs and training but now need a place to live?

Only those very few retarded at the lowest end of the intelligence spectrum cannot function, at least to some minimal degree, within a home. The state has attempted to set up hostels for these retarded adults within a home like setting, assigning five or six to each house under the care of a supervisory couple. Communities, by and large, have reacted to these hostels with hostility, fearing for their property values and uncomfortable with the ever‐present social stigma.

I find that few know anything about retardation, and I suspect that this lack of contact is responsible for the hostility the retarded face. Many think retarded people

are deranged or emotionally unstable. Those are fears, not facts. Retarded people are inherently gentle and unaggressive, which makes them defenseless. The retarded are simple human beings with the same basic needs of all of us: food, clothing, shelter — and especially love.

It might seem, from my account, that it took great sacrifice to live with my sister, and in some ways, it did, particularly from my mother.

But in other ways, it taught us so much. Maxine taught us compassion for the disadvantaged. She also served, curiously, to test the mettle of all we met. Those who were reluctant to accept her proved not to be worth our company. Her life showed us, by example, what the most important values should be. Maxine did not understand affect, materialism or hypocrisy. She did not understand social embarrassment. She has the same basic concern for the dog that lives in the next apartment as she does for its owners. It is a respect for all life, and for her, life is music, and laughter and love.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which bone loses its mineral content, there is a change in its structure and bone becomes weaker. A fall, sneeze or bumping into furniture can cause it to break. Osteoporosis is not just a women’s disease. It also affects men. It is present in 10 million women and in 2 million men in the United States.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease. You don’t know you have it until you fall and break a bone. Last year it caused two million fractures. These fractures can lead to pain, disability and even death. Fifty percent of women and 25% of men over the age of 50 will sustain an Osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. Osteoporotic hip fractures caused more deaths than breast cancer in women and more deaths than prostate cancer in men.

How do I know if I have Osteoporosis?

A. We can diagnose Osteoporosis by measurement of your bone mineral density (BMD). The BMD is the amount of mineral in an area of your bone. We do that with a DXA Scan Machine. We compare your BMD to a young 20 year old normal Caucasian female and we get a T-Score. If your T-Score is -2.5 or less in your hip or lumbar spine, you have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can also be diagnosed clinically, if you are 50 years or older, fall from a standing height and sustain a fracture.

You are entitled to a DXA Scan if you are a women 65 years or older or a man 70 years or older. Younger women and men age 50 to 70 years old who have risk factors for Osteoporosis such as a strong family history (mother or father with a history of Osteoporosis or a hip fracture or if you had a fracture from a fall), a medical condition (ex: Rheumatoid Arthritis, chronic kidney disease, diabetes) or are taking medications that causes loss of BMD (ex: steroids, aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer and some antidepressants) are also entitled to have a DXA scan. It is up to your Gynecologist, Family Practitioner, Internist, or Nurse Practitioner to question you on your risk factors for Osteoporosis and order the test.

If I have Osteoporosis, can it be treated?

A. Once the DXA results demonstrate a T-Score of -2.5 or less and a diagnosis of Osteoporosis is made, your physician should order a lab work up to rule out whether your Osteoporosis is due to your age, family history, a medical condition or to a medication you are taking.

We do that because all of the medications that we use for Osteoporosis have serious side effects. If you have a medical condition, we might treat that before prescribing a medication for Osteoporosis. If it is due to a medication you are taking, we may adjust the dosage or change the medication.

What is the treatment for Osteoporosis?

A. Osteoporosis can be treated but it can’t be cured in all cases.

It starts in childhood and can be prevented with proper diet, exercise and calcium and Vitamin D. It is very important that we all arrive at our peak bone mass in our 20’s (the maximal amount of minerals in our bone) so that when we age and start to lose bone, we will not develop Osteoporosis.

Some of the medications that we use (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, IV Reclast, Prolia) stop the bone cells that destroy the bone.

Other medications (Forteo, Tymlos) stimulate the bone cells that build bone. All of the medications have side effects but they are rare and only should be used in patients who are at high risk for fracture.

Do I need Calcium and Vitamin D? A. All individuals should have an adequate amount of calcium and Vitamin D in their diet. Calcium is necessary for bone health. If you are 50 years or older it is recommended that you take 1200mg of calcium per day. Our diet gives us 600mg per day. To obtain the other 600mg, the best sources are dairy products. An 8 ounce glass of milk gives us 300mg of calcium, as does a yogurt or 3 ounces of cheese. You need to take two of the same or a combination of two of these daily. You can also get calcium from foods that are fortified with calcium (cereals, soy milk, and juices) or green leafy vegetables. If you don’t get enough calcium from your foods or you are lactose intolerant then you can take a calcium supplement. They are best taken with foods in divided doses.

To absorb calcium you need adequate Vitamin D. Without Vitamin D only 10-15% of calcium is absorbed. Vitamin D can be obtained from supplements and can also be made when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Sunlight converts a substance in the skin to the inactive form of Vitamin D. It then goes into your bloodstream to your liver and then to your kidney. In your kidney the inactive form becomes the active form of Vitamin D.
