Revitilization in H’ton Station finally takes off, with mixed-use building

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com When it comes to revitalization, Huntington Station is building a future as solid as steel.

Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) could barely contain his excitement June 8 as he, along with town board members and developers, kicked off Huntington Station’s long-planned revitalization phase with the signing of a steel beam to be installed over the entrance of a new, mixed-use building currently under construction at the intersection of Northridge Street and New York

Avenue, a site on which the town has been trying to develop a property for decades.

“Finally, this is happening,” Petrone said to cheers and applause from at least 50 residents and local leaders standing in front of the construction site. “All of you who are here have been inspirational in his whole process and we know it’s taken a long time, but it’s happened...and thank goodness it’s happened.”

The mixed-use building, under construction since January and expected to be completed in October, will be made up of 6500 square feet of retail space on the first floor, with May’s Gourmet Delicatessen signed up as the first and only commercial tenant so far, and a total of 16 onebedroom apartments, eight on the second floor and eight on the third, for a total cost of $5.5 million. According to the town, it’s projected to “generate $55,007 in tax revenue the first year, rising to $132,016 (at present rates) in 15 years.”

This will serve as the first concrete project in Huntington Station’s next phase of youth-friendly revitalization and was developed in partnership with Renaissance Downtowns, a nationally-renowned development group chosen by the town to be a master developer in 2011. Blue & Gold Holdings, a Huntington-based contracting business, is in charge of construction.

“We’re going to attract millennials to this facility, and that speaks highly because the station is a hub, the station is a nucleus of people that commute, especially, and that’s who we are looking to attract,” Petrone said. “There was considerable

money put into this, and commitment, because that’s the commitment necessary to start the engine of economic development.

Promise Walk for Preeclampsia Heritage Park in hosting a Promise Walk for Preeclampsia, after local mom Jennifer DiSanza was diagnosed with the disorder while she was pregnant with her daughter, Elisandra, who was born at 33 weeks, 4 days.

Preeclampsia is a disorder which can develop during pregnancy that can be lifethreatening to both the mother and the unborn baby. Globally, it is estimated that 76,000 mothers and 500,000 babies die each year because of this disorder. HELLP syndrome, which DiSanza was also diagnosed with, has a mortality rate for women that can be as high as 25 percent worldwide.

Symptoms of preeclampsia typically show up after 20 weeks gestation and can include unusual swelling, weight gain, constant head-

aches, severe shortness of breath, pain in the upper abdomen and changes in vision. There is no known cause or cure. Many women experience what DiSanza has, and often giving birth prematurely is the only effective treatment.

Now, more than a year later, DiSanza and Elisandra are doing great, but want to raise money for research on the cause and cure for preeclampsia, which is very underfunded.

The walk to support the research, in a Preeclampsia Foundation event, will be held this Saturday, June 17, at Heritage Park, located at 633 Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Mount Sinai. Registration is free and begins at 8:30 a.m., with a pre-walk program at 9:30 a.m. and the 1.5 mile walk at 10 a.m.

Residents protest E. Northport cat shelter decision Town board decides not to renew contract with current owner due to violating tax laws

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Huntington residents rallied behind the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter, of East Northport, this week after the Huntington Town Board announced it was evicting the shelter for failing to notify the board it had lost its 501(c)(3) not-for-profit in 2015.

Town Attorney Cindy Mangano addressed the public before the speakers began at the board meeting Tuesday, June 13, summarizing how the shelter, run by the League for Animal Protection and served exclusively by volunteers had taken this turn. She said the shelter was notified April 20 by the town to evacuate their Deposit Road establishment within 90 days due to losing their nonprofit status and violating federal and state law.

“In April, everybody here knows it’s time to file your tax returns or seek an extension,” Mangano said. “Charitable notfor-profit organizations must do the same thing. Earlier this year my office sat with Debbie Larkin, the president of LAP, and we were in the process of drafting a new agreement when we learned that a resident had incurred a penalty from the IRS for claiming a tax deduction for a donation

in their original contractual agreement with the town. According to the town attorney, the LAP lost its charitable status because they did not file paperwork in time with the

IRS and the New York State Attorney General’s Charities Bureau office.

“When this came to my attention I scheduled a meeting with Ms. Larkin,” Mangano said. “She told us she knew but she failed to advise us of this fact. So I cannot in counsel to this board advise the board to enter into a new agreement with an organization that as we speak has violated its agreement with the town and is in violation of federal and state laws.”

Residents flocked to the podium to defend the shelter and its contribution to the Huntington community.

“I’m here today to appeal to the town’s decision,” Sharlene Turner, who has adopted many cats from the shelter, said. “Please give the league a renewed opportunity to prove itself.”

Turner suggested setting up strict guidelines and rules moving forward. She commended the dedication of the volunteer staff for providing a safe and warm environment for the animals.

“All volunteers know each cat by name,” she said. “They know their personalities and the relationship a cat has with every other friend in the shelter.

FEMA-funded storm hardening also continues along the distribution network, with stronger poles, more

wind-resistant wires and automatic switching equipment. Since funding was secured in 2014, this work has improved more than 80 circuits covering more than 270 circuit miles from the Rockaways to Shelter Island.

When completed, the FEMA reliability work will cover 1,025 circuit miles across the service territory.

Commack house engulfed in flames The Commack Fire Department responded to a house fire shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, June 12, on Astor Court.

Firefighters arrived to find five residents, two adults and three children, safely evacuated with flames engulfing the home.

About 50 firefighters battled the blaze and were assisted by the Kings Park, Smithtown, and Hauppauge fire departments.

Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) and Councilwoman Susan Berland (D), both integral players in the town’s revitalization efforts, were equally excited about the progress being made on the site.

“Today is a great day for Huntington Station,” Cuthbertson said. “Anytime we can see brick, mortar and steel [in Huntington Station] with housing going up is a good sign. We have beautiful mixed-use buildings like this going up in Huntington Village that really, really add to the downtown area...but when we can have a building like this, when the economics are right, when government and the private sector come together and are able to do this in Huntington Station, we’re certainly on the right track.”

Berland assured the crowd that although it’s been long in the making, the project will be worth the wait.

“The businesses that are going to happen here and the people who are going to be able to move in to the heart of the station and live here and prosper here and shop here —it’s going to be fantastic,” Berland said. “It’s a beautiful design and it’s going to be a beautiful project when it’s done and we wish everybody who’s going to move in here lots and lots of happiness and years of shopping in Huntington and spending your money. They say the best things in life are worth waiting for and, well, this is absolutely worth waiting for.”

Don Monti, chairman of Renaissance Downtowns, referring to Petrone, said, “Huntington Station is something he’s wanted to see developed for many years and I’m happy and proud that prior to the

The fire was brought under control in approximately a half-hour, under the direction of Commack Fire Chief Rich Myers and Second Assistant Chief Bobby Wilkins.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, and is under investigation by the Town of Smithtown and Commack Fire Marshals.

The home was extensively damaged, and the Red Cross was on the scene to assist the family.

Future projects proposed by Renaissance Downtowns, currently in the approval process, include a mixed-use building at the intersection of New York Avenue and Olive Street that will include 66 apartments and ground-level retail, a hotel and office building at New York Avenue and Railroad Street, and artists’ studios in what is currently a municipal parking lot at New York Avenue and Church Street.

Dolores Thompson, a community activist for more than 70 years and the mother of Town Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D), said she’s been trying to bring back Huntington Station since it was “taken away in the 1950s.”

“This is one of the things that I wanted to see before I leave this world and to be here today and be able to witness the fact that we actually have started is like a blessing...I’m so pleased to be here,” Thompson said. In terms of what she hopes will come to Huntington Station, she laughed, “We need a hair salon, then a shoe store, we want a gathering place and a community room...we want everything, okay?”

Robert Rockelein, a member of the civic group Huntington Matters, called this “progress in the right direction.”

“The revitalization has been backsliding for decades, it’s long overdue and it’s going to help populate and reflourish the downtown area,” Rockelein said. “I’d like to see more neighborhood-established businesses rather than regional chains obviously, and give people that live and work here an opportunity to establish something here and build their American dream.”

Local leaders, developers and residents each took turns signing their names on the last piece of steel to be installed on the mixed-use building, which will be placed at the entrance.

On June 7, at approximately 5:50 p.m., a 31-year-old man from East Northport stole a Four Loko beverage from 7-Eleven on Jericho Turnpike in Commack, police said.

He was arrested June 11 and charged with petit larceny.

During a traffic stop on Memaf Court in Huntington at around 10:10 a.m. June 9, a 22-year-old man from Centereach in a 2012 Mercedes was found to be in possession of marijuana and gave a fake name when asked for identification, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and second-degree criminal impersonation.

A 19-year-old man from Huntington was found to be in public possession of marijuana on Hill Place in Huntington June 5 at around 1:10 p.m., police said. He was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

At 3:30 p.m. June 9, a 26-year-old woman from Valley Stream used a fraudulent driver’s license to acquire a credit card at Tourneau, a high-end watch retailer, in the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington Station, police said. She was arrested an hour later and charged with identity theft.

According to police, a 22-year-old woman from East Northport was arrested June 7 for trespassing at Northport High School on Laurel Hill Road April 21 at around 1:15 a.m. She was charged with thirddegree criminal trespassing.

Nonprofit groups working with H’ton residents to test water quality Participants to create water report card for harbors and bays of the Long Island Sound

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com There’s a team collaboration happening across Long Island to ensure the Long Island Sound’s water is as healthy as possible.

Save the Sound, a nonprofit organization based out of Connecticut, is working with local groups and volunteers to create a water quality report card for the Sound’s bays and harbors, in an effort to increase available data for residents to have access to information on the health of the Sound.

Monitoring of the open Sound, the areas of the water body beyond bays and harbors, in the last decade has revealed the increasing presence of nitrogen pollution — which leads to algae blooms, red tides, loss of tidal marshes and fish dieoffs — and the incremental improvements brought about by wastewater treatment plant upgrades. But researchers have acknowledged that results found in the open Sound may not reflect conditions in the bays and harbors, where a large part of the public comes in contact with the Sound.

In May, Save the Sound started conducting the Unified Water Study in 24 sites across the Sound, and participants will be testing the water twice a month through October, looking at dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, dissolved salt levels, water quality and more.

Organizers gathered at Huntington Harbor in Halestie to conduct a test Tuesday, June 13, and explained why the report card is so important for the future of bays and harbors across Long Island.

“The Long Island Sound Funders Collaborative funded a report card for the sound, with the first one coming out in 2015, and through the report card process we realized that most of the data we had

So we realized we had a data gap.”

Brown said certain groups have been doing their own studies in smaller areas but nothing uniform to have a comparative level.

The report card focuses on the ecological health, not bacteria levels and risk of contamination for humans entering the water, but rather the creatures living in the water 24/7.

“The pollutant of concern is nitrogen,” Brown said. “This study was designed to get into all 116 little bays, harbors and coves that encircle the sound, and our goal is to get into each of them taking the exact same measurements for an assessment to say which of the bays and harbors are not handling the nutrient input well, which ones are really suffering from nutrient pollution and then we can direct conservation resources.”

Brown said one of the leading causes of increased nitrogen is contamination from the septic systems, as urine has high levels of nitrogen. She said efforts like Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s (D) initiatives to improve groundwater and limit nitrogen pollution are a step in the right direction.

“Nitrogen pollution has been identified as the single greatest threat to water quality, but for the first time in decades, we have a historic opportunity to turn the tide in our effort to reclaim our waters,” Bellone said in a statement when announcing countywide nitrogen-reducing initiatives for homeowners.

Brown reiterated some of the dangers of high levels of nitrogen.

“High levels of nitrogen feed growth, creating algal blooms, and when the algal blooms die they suck the oxygen out of the water in that decay process so you create these low oxygen zones,” she said.

Low oxygen levels mean finfish and shellfish can’t live in the area, and high nitrogen levels also lead to the destruction of coastal wetlands, which not only serve as a habitat for animals but also are a defense for homes from destructive storms. Brown also said high nitrogen levels are being linked to high acidification levels, which prevent shellfish from forming their shells and reduce the population’s ability to reproduce.

About a year ago Peter Janow, a Cold Spring Harbor resident, got in touch with Save the Sound, after hearing about their efforts, and extended an offer to help if they needed any hands for the Huntington and Northport bay areas.

“Once they created the Uniform Water Study they got in contact with me and asked if I could help out and I said ‘absolutely brother,’” Janow said of how he first got involved. He eventually ended up joining more volunteers to work on the area together. He said he was motivated to get involved to both make a difference and help become a stronger part of his community.

“Most folks, especially on Long Island we’re surrounded by gorgeous scenes, the harbors, all the water sports,” Janow said.

“We [the volunteers] share in the duties, and the role is covering the greater Huntington and Northport complexes including Lloyd Harbor, Huntington Harbor, Centerport Harbor, Northport Harbor and Duck Island Harbor, and each one of those areas has its own qualities. We have a total of 25 specific locations we’re testing water samples from.”

Janow said he and the others divide the areas up into two different days, spending about three hours each day testing water samples.

The combined efforts are for the benefit

of all Long Islanders, and residents can help without getting on the water themselves.

“We really hope the public will see the significance,” Brown said. “If you want a better grade, you need to take care of your wastewater, and reduce your lawn fertilizer. The science community has identified nitrogen as enemy number one to the Long Island Sound, and the philanthropic community said, ‘what can we do,’ and then they reached out to regional groups to execute their vision, and then we’ve reached out to local groups for help. That’s what’s so interesting about this study — the collaboration.”

The collaborative effort is far from over.

Brown said there is still a need for more volunteers to cover areas east of Huntington, including areas in the towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven, especially near the Nissequogue River and Port Jefferson Harbor.

This effort travels all the way to Connecticut, and one science teacher at a town in Dover took the initiative to volunteer himself and his Advanced Placement students to help contribute.

“One of the things that makes it possible for groups to organize to participate in this study even if they’re not already a group is that we provide the equipment, we provide the training, we provide the standard operating procedures and Save the Sound is available to help them get off the ground and make sure they succeed,” Brown said. “If we’re going to reach all 116 systems around the Sound that we want to reach, we’re going to need more groups.

We’re going to need new groups that don’t exist yet to organize around the study and ask if anyone is in their bay or harbor yet.”

The foundation has dubbed the time span between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the 100 Deadliest Days because teen driver crashes increase by 15 percent during this period, and while North Shore officials don’t exactly see the same trend, they do agree distracted driving is becoming increasingly dangerous in young drivers.

“Statistics show that teen crashes spike during the summer months because teens are out of school and on the road,” David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director said in a statement. “The foundation’s research found that inexperience paired with greater exposure on the road could create a deadly combination for teen drivers.”

According to a study done by the foundation, more than 1,600 people were killed in crashes involving inexperienced drivers during this time period in the past five years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2015 crash data said the number of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes increased more than 10 percent from the previous year, and the AAA Foundation said driving distractions, speeding and not wearing seat belts are the main culprits in fatalities among young drivers.

The foundation said 60 percent of teen drivers killed in crashes were not wearing a seat belt, nearly 30 percent were speeding and six out of every 10 were distracted while at the wheel.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicle Crash Summary for 2014, the most recent year available, distraction made up nearly 20 percent of the total crashes, was the leading cause for total crashes and was the fourth highest reason for fatalities for drivers of all ages. The other biggest human factors for New York include tailgating and speeding.

The New York DMV also indicated a majority of crashes happen on Fridays, with the most occurring between 3 and 6 p.m.

However, the largest total number of fatal crashes occurred on Sundays, also between 3 and 6 p.m.

According to the data from New York state, teens are not alone in requiring greater attention while behind the wheel.

In both men and women, ages 21 to 29 had the highest number of crashes — however, women had a significantly lower number of overall crashes than men. For example, for men ages 18 to 20, there were 58 fatal car crashes out of 1,016, and for women in the same group there were only 23 out of 340. Women had fewer crashes than men in every single age group.

Northport Village Police Chief Bill Ricca said while his data doesn’t show these months as being particularly more dangerous, he agreed distracted driving is a growing problem.

“Distracted driving is a huge problem with these young kids,” he said in a phone interview. “You have the inexperience, paired with the music blasting, and the other kids in the car, it really increases the potential for accidents and other mishaps. It’s important to put the distractions aside and pay attention to where you’re going. One of the biggest factors we continually see on accident reports is distracted driving.”

But Ricca did have one compliment for the younger generation of drivers.

“I’ve noticed these kids are doing a much better job of not drinking and driving,” he said. “There’s been a culture change with the younger kids; it’s been hammered into them for years. They’re doing a much better job than the generation before them.”

He said it’s still important to continue to teach kids about the dangers of drinking and driving. According to the DMV, drinking and driving was the third leading reason for crash fatalities.

The AAA Foundation said families should

sit down with their young drivers and make sure they understand the dangers and responsibilities of being on the road.

“Parents are the front line of defense for keeping our roads safer this summer,” Jennifer Ryan, AAA director of state relations said in a statement. “It all starts with educating teens about safety on the road and modeling good behavior, like staying off the phone and buckling your safety belt.”

Huntington Councilman Mark Cuthberston (D) has also tried to encourage more conversations between teens and their parents. He recently hosted a distracted driving seminar at the Cinema Arts Centre.

“As the school year comes to a close and summer recess begins, our youths will be spending more time on the roadways,” Cuthbertson said in an email. “I thought it would be beneficial to hold this program now and remind our teens to avoid distractions while behind the wheel so they can survive the drive.”

Haley Shore, an 11-year-old who donned cat ears at the meeting, said she’s been volunteering at the shelter for about seven years.

Haley also brought a petition signed by many friends and neighbors.

Several of the volunteers asked the board what would happen to the cats if the shelter closed its doors. According to the town, two other shelters have offered to take over including The Little Shelter in Elwood. However volunteers argued they don’t offer the same amount of health services for animals as the Grateful Paw staff does.

Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) assured the audience that all of the cats living at the shelter now would continue to be cared for, and the shelter would continue with its no-kill policy. However despite the pleas of many residents, he said he

had great concerns moving forward with LAP. “Animals will not be harmed,” Petrone said at the meeting. “I’m a cat lover, but five years without a filing, and it was known and the town was not told. I personally don’t have confidence in the league anymore to go forward when they knew the situation existed.”

Petrone said it’s not as easy as the shelter just refiling for not-for-profit status.

“These laws were broken,” he said. “So you’re telling us just go forward and let’s make it nice. Well it’s not that simple.”

No further decision was reached by the board at the meeting.

“When I heard the news Huntington was going to possibly close the shelter, I was devastated,” she said. “The shelter has become my second home. But this is not about me, it’s about the shelter and all the innocent cats. What are they supposed to do without all of their dedicated and loyal volunteers? For some of these cats this has been the only home they’ve ever known.

The cats can’t talk, so we have to be their voices.”

county North Shore moms host fundraiser for their autism support group

By Kevin Redding Kevin@tbrnewspapers.com When two Mount Sinai moms whose sons fall on the autism spectrum noticed a lack of support and resources in Suffolk County to help families affected by the disorder, they took to Facebook to form “a little support group” — made up of 12 moms in a living room.

A year and a half and 1,500 members later, the nonprofit Suffolk Aspergers/Autism Support & Information has blossomed into a haven for those dealing with disabilities, enriching the lives of special needs families through essential services and programs, as well as emotional and financial support.

“We’ve literally become an autism family,” said SASI co-founder Priscilla Arena, whose 10-year-old son was diagnosed at a younger age. “We feel a great sense of responsibility to every single parent and child and doing the right thing by all of them. I’m doing this not just for my son, but for everyone’s children because we need to do this.”

The group is growing at an exponential rate, as does autism diagnoses throughout Long Island. Its founders, Arena and Stephanie Mendelson, took their outreach for autism to whole new heights June 8 with their first Blue Party fundraiser.

In a grandiose ballroom at The Inn at East Wind in Wading River, hundreds of local residents, business representatives, elected officials and celebrity guests dressed in blue, the official color of autism awareness, danced the night away to live music and took part in casino gaming, raffles and auctions all in the name of SASI and autism.

Sponsors of the gala included Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Mount Sinai, Powerhouse Gym in Miller Place and Investors Bank in East Northport. An international theme was represented by cuisines from different cultures because, as Arena said, “Autism doesn’t discriminate based on race or socioeconomics.”

All funds raised will go toward a physical office for the nonprofit, as its members currently meet once a month at Mather Hospital, and the expansion of the nonprofit’s numerous programs for families, including its Life Skills program, a 12-week program that

Mendelson, whose 8-year-old son Jacob struggles with motor skills, speech delay and overwhelming anxiety as a result of his autism, said she realized early on that he wasn’t meeting the milestones his twin sister was.

When she and her husband got the diagnosis, she said she felt a mixture of relief and profound sadness.

“My instinct was to wrap him in a cocoon and protect him,” Mendelson told the room.

“I realized at that moment that it was my job to be his advocate, his coach, his teacher, his biggest fan. I felt overwhelmed and scared at the idea of his outcome and future resting on my shoulders ... nevertheless, we began our journey and immersed ourselves in the world of autism.”

After she met Arena at a business meeting in late 2015, the two shared a desire to provide families a place to go where they didn’t have to feel as lonely and isolated as they did.

Part of the $7,000 donated to the advocacy program will help parents struggling to get proper services within school districts and raise awareness and acceptance among regular kids. The group does not yet know the grand total raised during the event, but the goal was $50,000.

“We want to be the autism resource center in Suffolk County, a central resource for parents no matter what their issue is,” Mendelson said. “And if we don’t know, we can find somebody who does.”

Monica Nichols, who serves as parent liaison at NYTKids Sensory Gym & Speech/Language Center in Port Jefferson Station, which provides programs and social skills groups for those with autism, said connecting with other parents helped her most when her own child was diagnosed.

“By far, for me, the most valuable resources have been other parents, because it’s really from other parents where you learn what’s out there in a more meaningful way than what a doctor can tell you — it’s what makes it special,” Nichols said. “[SASI] has been a big shift, they’ve really done a great job at outreach and membership and making each individual family feel part of a bigger family.”

When Lisa Gerstein, of Centereach, first joined the group in its beginning stages, things got better quickly.

“We felt alone with everything that was occurring with our son, and heard about the group ... he now has friends he can relate to,” Gerstein said. “We’ve learned a lot in terms of what to do with dealing with the school district and what to ask for ... it’s incredible and I don’t feel like I’m alone.”

Daniel Korcz, a 22-year-old college student with autism, who hopes to mentor young people on the spectrum, said the nonprofit has brought him a lot of happiness. “It’s pretty amazing that there’s an organization to help people like me, who are smart kids that are on the spectrum,” the Islandia resident said.

“It provides them support and assistance that they might need.”

Among some of the entertainment of the evening were TKA, a Latin freestyle trio prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s, and former Anthrax singer Dan Nelson, who performed Beatles and Elvis songs with his band Dan Nelson and the Downfall.

World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. Hall of Famer Mick Foley, of Smithtown, showed up to the fundraiser willing to help in any way, as the cause hits him close to home. His 16-yearold son Mickey is on the spectrum.

“This is an issue that kind of chose me, so I readily agreed to be part of this,” Foley said, adding he hopes this is a big success for the group.

Discussing his experience as a parent of an autistic child, he said he wished he’d been more aware.

“I look back at the videos when he was much younger and realize I should’ve known a long time ago,” he said. “I think it’s important that people become aware and acceptance is incredibly important. Learn as much as you can, find a great support group and don’t feel like it’s the end of the world because it’s not. Being the parent of a child with autism is definitely a struggle, but it’s also a great adventure.”

As a culminating activity to their writing unit, students wanted to learn how to make pizza and Ianni did the honors.

Originally from Italy, Ianni worked in a pizzeria for several years when he first arrived in the U.S. During the lesson, he taught students how to make pizza, while they followed along and created their own out of Play-Doh. “The students enjoyed getting their hands dirty and now have their own pizza as a memento for the lesson,” said Moccaldi. “Seeing Dr. Ianni toss the pizza dough in the air was a favorite part for many of the students.”

Harborfields High School senior Matthew Katz from the Harborfields Central School District recently received the Anthony Calia Foundation Scholarship at the Association of Italian American Educators (AIAE) 20th Anniversary Gala. The full scholarship will allow Katz to study Italian language and culture in Pisa, Italy, this summer.

He will participate in an enriching program, titled Programma Ponte, which enables qualified Italian American students to take part in an intensive summer program of study designed to give those with Italian American heritage firsthand experience with Italy today through coursework,

visits to important Italian and European institutions and direct contact with the Italian people.

Katz was selected based on a strong recommendation from AIAE President Josephine Maietta and Harborfields High School English teacher Jim Incorvaia. He also provided an essay about why he would be a exceptional candidate and a writing sample demonstrating analytical and writing abilities.

Along with his Italian teacher Craig Butler, Katz attended the special luncheon that featured authors, playwrights, news reporters and former New York State First Lady Matilda Cuomo. Cuomo congratulated and encouraged the award winners to continue their scholarship in Italian language.

Forty Northport High School seniors were commended on May 27 during the school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program’s Recognition Ceremony.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Banzer, administrators, board members, faculty and family members attended the ceremony where IB Diploma Program Coordinator Wayne Jensen welcomed the crowd. He explained the significance of the evening and praised the students for their achievement.

“You have become remarkable thinkers who actively seek opportunities for independent learning,” said Jensen. “Tonight represents the culmination of two years of hard work and the completion of a program that along with many other factors has played a substantial role in shaping the person you are today.”

To complete the IB Diploma Program, each student was challenged to take six IB courses from across the major content groups. These included studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathemat-

ics, the arts and electives.

Throughout the ceremony, several independent awards were presented to deserving students. Thomas Dowling Jr. and Blake Stoddard received the IB Theory of Knowledge Award, Malena Farber and Caitlin Johnson both received the $500 Deborah A. Shavalier Memorial Scholarship, while Sarah Abodalo took home the $1,000 scholarship. Abodalo was also presented with the IB Diploma Teacher Recognition Award along with Laura Dayton for their dedication in the classroom.

IB students Sean Chin and John Charles Unser presented their senior address, highlighting their positive program experience and the IB Dance students performed.

In addition, IB student Ceylan Swenson shared her senior poem, which she wrote specifically for the occasion titled, “There Once Was a Competent Student.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony, each member of the IB Diploma Class of 2017 was awarded a certificate from Principal Daniel Danbusky for their high achievement and were invited to enjoy a reception in the school cafeteria to celebrate.

Blue Devils track team wins state championship Huntington first in federation, Johnson in 400 dash, Leake third in 400 high hurdles

The Blue Devils won the State Federation team title at Union-Endicott June 10, topping every public, private and parochial high school in New York. Huntington claimed the top three places in four different events, accumulating 30 points in the process and edging runner-up Briarcliff by four points in the team standings. No other high school came close.

“We have really been blessed with some magnificent athletes and outstanding young men,” Huntington head coach Ron Wilson said. “They’ve impressed competitors, coaches and fans all over the country.

They are incredible ambassadors for our community and they always put their best foot forward.”

The Blue Devils were carried to victory by four sensational performances in the State Federation meet, which pitted the best track and field athletes in the New

York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Division I and Division II against New York City’s Public School Athletic League and private and parochial schools.

Kyree Johnson won the State Federation 400-meter dash title and finished third in long jump. Lawrence Leake was third in the 400 high hurdles.

On June 9, Johnson grabbed a pair of NYSPHSAA Division I titles in the 400 dash and long jump. It was the senior’s second consecutive state 400 dash crown.

Johnson notched a season best time of 46.56 seconds and then leaped 23 feet, 6.5 inches to easily best the field in long jump.

Leake took third in the NYSPHSAA Division I in the 400 high hurdles with a time of 54.53 seconds, a mere 3/100ths of a second behind the second place finisher.

“I feel like I performed as well as I could have,” Leake said. “Even though I didn’t win, I ran a personal best.”

Huntington’s 4x400 relay also finished third in the NYSPHSAA Division I, crossing the finish line in 3 minutes, 17.29 seconds.

Promoting economic stimulus plan as pollution solution

We’re sporting success Athletic success was contagious on the North Shore this spring.

We boasted 13 boys lacrosse, 11 baseball, eight boys tennis, 13 girls lacrosse and 11 softball squads in the playoffs this season. Local teams like Comsewogue boys lacrosse, Ward Melville baseball, Ward Melville boys tennis, Smithtown East girls lacrosse and Walt Whitman softball reached the semifinals. Seven of those 56 postseason qualifiers went on to be crowned Suffolk County champions, including the Commack baseball team, which grabbed the program’s first title in 20 years, and Mount Sinai’s softball team, which won its third straight county final.

Ward Melville boys lacrosse and the girls lacrosse teams from Mount Sinai and Middle Country all nabbed Long Island championship titles, and all three won their state semifinal games. The Patriots and Mustangs won state titles. And after the Middle Country Mad Dogs won the program’s first county, Long Island and state semifinal games, the girls narrowly lost in overtime, after the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse recruit and New York’s new all-time leading scorer Jamie Ortega netted the equalizer with just 1:37 left in regulation.

Districts like Mount Sinai, Shoreham-Wading River and Ward Melville have been dominating team and individual sports, creating powerhouse programs. Besides posting playoff teams in nearly every sport, Shoreham-Wading River junior Katherine Lee won a myriad of titles across the track and field season. She became a part of history when she and three other teammates swept the top three spots in the 3,000-meter state qualifier run, and placed second in the state with a new personal best.

Port Jefferson sophomore Shane DeVincenzo placed sixth overall and fifth in the Federation at the state golf tournament. Northport track and field’s 4x800 relay team placed first in the state and Federation finals, and Huntington’s Lawrence Leake placed third in the state track and field finals in the 400 high hurdles. His teammate Kyree Johnson won a state title in the 400 dash and third in the long jump, and led the Blue Devils to win the Federation team title, toppling every public, private and parochial high school in New York.

A load of other talented track and field standouts across our schools placed in the county finals and state qualifier meets. We’ve seen more and more talent across every team and individual sport with each season, and our schools continue to sneak into national rankings, perhaps creating budding dynasties for years to come.

With the end of another successful season, we want to recognize all the hard work and dedication put in by our student-athletes, many of whom excel to a similar level inside the classroom, and their coaches who help lead the way. Every student needs some guidance, and it’s clear guidance from coaches this season helped bring these athletes great success.

To overcome any kind of competition, students spend years learning their chosen sport or sports, practicing skills and developing their physical fitness. It takes a lot of patience and positive thinking to not give up at one loss or the next, and trust that the years of sacrifice will pay off.

We’re proud to have covered those wrapping up their high school careers who have represented our six paper’s various coverage areas with class and pride, and we look forward to seeing what the returners can do next year. Congratulations, and keep up the good work.

Your editorial policy repeats the county’s misinformation that we must protect our waters from nitrogen pollution by replacing our septic systems with these new advanced treatment systems. There is no doubt that nitrogen is a problem in some locations, but these complicated treatment systems in our front yards are not the answer.

Studies have shown that nitrogen from acid rain falling directly on the bays and runoff from the land together with fertilizers are a major component of nitrogen pollution. These expensive septic systems (up to $20,000 installation and $600/yr operation and maintenance) will do nothing to reduce nitrogen from these sources.

The county’s own website touts that these new systems are suitable for construction on small lots near wetland areas “with significant site constraints such as high ground-

water … in coastal areas” (www.

ReclaimOurWater.info). Any additional construction in the watershed will increase nitrogen from runoff regardless of the type of septic system installed. The long-term solution is to limit population density and development in environmentally sensitive areas, not increase it.

The fact that the environmental and editorial community has jumped on board shows what a great PR job the county has done in promoting an economic stimulus package as a pollution solution. Plans are already in the works to require these systems to be installed, not just in sensitive areas, but whenever a septic system has to be pumped or whenever a property is sold. The industry projects that thousands of jobs will be created with millions of dollars coming out of our pockets. This is the underlying reason for the

program — to help plug the $100 million plus hole in the county budget — at taxpayers’ expense.

The grant program only pays about half of the installation cost with the owner having to shell out or take a loan for the additional cost estimated at up to $10,000, not including landscape and legal fees. The new Article 19 of the Sanitary Code also requires that the owners of the new system file deed restrictions against their property that require maintenance contracts be paid in perpetuity and subjects the owner to investigation and penalties for noncompliance.

Anyone thinking of installing these systems should seriously consider the financial and legal ramifications and carefully read all the information on the website www.ReclaimOurWater.info.

Warmed by the words of love for a dog In response Leah Dunaief’s May 25 column “A farewell letter to a beautiful Golden Retriever”: Your wonderful tribute to Teddy brought tears to my eyes. I want you to know how sorry I am for your loss. His paw prints will always be in a special corner of your heart.

We lost our beloved Golden, named Christian, in late 2006. He also was 12 years old. Like Teddy,

he was so special. He had to greet everyone and people would come up to him just to touch him and feel that special love that only a Golden Retriever can give. Like Teddy, Christian also loved the water.

In Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson, there are five small trees along the road across from the Port Jefferson Village Center. It is the children’s park. Under the middle tree is a bronze plaque with

a Golden Retriever etched into it.

Engraved are the words: “Christian Trigony, A Much Loved Golden Retriever.”

We bought him the tree and plaque because we also knew his memory would never die.

Ironic cruelty on International Children’s Day The 2017 world prize for ironic cruelty may well have occurred on June 1, International Children’s Day. The day’s announcement went largely unrecognized due to news of President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord.

The report from Save The Children said that for at least 700 million children worldwide, childhood is stolen by “childhood enders” to violence, extreme poverty and “forced displacement,” which is largely due to climate factors and food shortages in developing countries.

Part of Trump’s reasoning for leaving the accord, he said, was that America is “being taken advantage of.” In particular, we had pledged to give $11 billion over several years to improve living conditions in environmentally fragile parts of the developing world. America can no longer afford to do things like this, he said.

Irony Part 1: Such “savings” will result in predictable increases of forced migration, political unrest and death to vulnerable children, which are far more costly and cruel in the

long term.

Irony Part 2: This withdrawal follows the president’s recently proposed health care plan that will provide the wealthiest Americans with hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks. We evidently can afford that.

Irony Part 3: Both of these “deals” are supposed to help “Make America Great Again.”

Can a nation that does not make the needs of children its first priority really ever become great?

f you’re reading this on a cellphone somewhere, please stop. No, seriously. You can read it on your computer or in an actual copy of the paper but, please, stop reading this and look around you.

OK, are you back in your office or at your home?

It’s disturbing how often our cellphones become an escape from the here and now.

I get it: We’re waiting in line to order a hamburger and we want to do something, so we

In the process, we’ve lost sight of what’s around us. It’s as if we’ve covered our eyes with electronic blinders

and we can’t be bothered to pay attention to our surroundings.

I was recently driving through town and noticed a woman walking a large, chocolate Labrador along the sidewalk.

His rear legs were pointed out as he walked. As I drove by, I noticed that the woman held the leash on her wrist as she was completely absorbed in her cellphone. Seconds later, the dog relieved himself on the sidewalk while trying to keep up with his oblivious owner. The dog looked uncomfortable as he tried to multitask.

I realize dogs are an enormous responsibility and that every time someone walks a dog, that person may not feel the urge to dedicate his or her complete attention to a conversation with the family pet.

“Hey, Tigger, look at that squirrel over there. Oh, wow, there’s a bunny.

Do you see the bunny? Oh, wait, there are two bunnies.”

“What do you smell, Fifi? Was there another dog here a few hours ago and

did he leave you a little scent present?”

We don’t have to connect with our pets every moment of every day. But wouldn’t it be nice if we were able to pay them some attention while we were out walking them? After all, how often do they come over to us when we’ve had a tough day, or give us their paw—or offer us companionship?

Everywhere we go, we have the opportunity to tune out the world around us and surf our way to somewhere else.

It’s thrilling to travel halfway around the world and send pictures instantly of a magnificent sunset, or the Eiffel Tower or a three-toed sloth.

We can be connected to almost anyone almost anytime.

That shouldn’t give us license to disconnect from the people and the pets around us. It’s the economic concept of opportunity cost applied to our attention. The opportunity cost of paying attention to what’s on our phone is that we ignore our surroundings.

Remember those public service

announcements which said, “It’s 10 o’clock, do you know where your children are?” Maybe we should have messages that pop up on our phone suggesting that “It’s 6 o’clock, do you know where you are,” or maybe, “It’s 6 o’clock, pick up your head and check out the here and now (or H&N).”

Maybe we should also develop an H&N logo we can put on clothing or notebooks. It can even become a verbal reminder to our companions.

“Class,” a teacher might say as she noticed her students taking furtive glances at their phones, “H&N, right?

Let’s learn the material now, while you’re here.”

H&N may be a way of encouraging us to be where our bodies are at the moment, and not where the internet has taken us.

Dogs, meanwhile, shouldn’t have to multitask while they’re relieving themselves. If Fluffy could talk, she might say, “For goodness’ sake, H&N, I need a moment here.”

lmost everyone likes movies. But have you ever fantasized about making a movie? Now I’m not talking about a home movie of the kids swimming or starring in a play.

I mean the big stuff, with lights, camera, action, Hollywood director’s chair, firsttier actors and bullhorn. Well, our newspapers are now in the filmmaking business, and it was history that made us do it.

History, particularly our loBy Leah S. Dunaief cal history about the Revolutionary War - the battle of Long Island, the Battle of Setauket, Nathan Hale and the Setauket Spies are as exciting to read as any stories today. In fact, they are remarkably relevant, as aspects of the Constitution are regularly part of our political discussions today. For what were the Patriots fighting, putting their lives and possessions on the line, bleeding and dying? And what are we doing

with that heritage?

History makes for great storytelling, as the producers of “TURN” on AMC discovered over the last four years. Their version of history was inspired by fact but strung together by fiction. So on the anniversary of the Setauket Spy Ring last year, we filmed a dramatic narrative of the Culper Spies wholly based on fact.

To our great delight, that short film, which is on our website and YouTube, Facebook and other places, won first prize from the New York Press Association for video made by a newspaper.

Encouraged by our success and entranced by the many triumphant and also heart-wrenching stories that happened right here on Long Island some 240 years ago, we are making a full-length film this year, and we begin shooting locally this weekend. This time we are going all the way, with a cast of professional producers, directors, actors and first-rate equipment. The set is a work of art in itself, a recreation of the fort in the Battle of Long Island in Brooklyn Heights. We have 135 re-enactors coming from distant parts — Saratoga, New York; members of our own Long Island Third New York regiment; Murrysville, Pennsylvania; and Fair-

field, Connecticut — to stage the battle that almost lost the Revolutionary War before it even truly began. They will be carrying authentic muskets, shooting gunpowder, spilling blood and gore profusely (thanks to our famous special effects person) and otherwise re-creating history. Best of all about this film, we are delving into the lives and personalities of the historic figures whose actions made victory possible. Be assured that we are characterizing them authentically, both colonists and British, fleshing out what details have come down to us from historians and corroborated by our local historical societies.

Several local organizations, institutions and residents are helping to support and underwrite this ambitious production: The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Three Village Historical Society, The State University at Stony Brook, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA), Theatre Three and the law firm of Glynn Mercep & Purcell.

Some support is not so local, perhaps including the Fraunces Tavern Museum in New York City and the Nathan Hale Homestead Museum in Coventry, Connecticut. Many places have indicated their interest in showing the

film, including some local teachers and administrators. What a painless way to teach local history.

As we have been reaching out to the many people involved in this venture, we have come across many enriching details. For example, the SherwoodJayne Farm, where some of the action takes place, has original planking from Founding Spy Benjamin Tallmadge’s home, the Brewster House was a tavern and home of a cousin of fellow Culper Spy, Caleb Brewster, historic Benner’s Farm where we are doing some of the filming, comes down to us over the centuries, and the 1709 Thompson House, home of a local doctor, is one the beautiful preservations of the WMHO. And by the way, the Caroline Church on the Green in Setauket has a musket ball lodged in its steeple.

History is the glue that holds a community together, and our particular history is the platform on which our nation was built. We are proud to bring these stories to you on film, as well as in print, and we invite any organizations, businesses and residents who might like to be credited with making this production a reality to contact us directly.
