TOWN Huntington residents filibuster against Villadom Developer withdraws application for Elwood Orchard hours before town’s slated public hearing; vows to revise plans

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A developer’s decision to pull its proposal to build a 486,000-square-foot commercial development off Jericho Turnpike did nothing to stop hundreds of Huntington residents from coming out to participate in a three-hour rally against downzoning in their community.

Town of Huntington officials announced May 17 that Villadom Corp. had officially withdrawn its application for the proposed Elwood Orchard project, hours before the public hearing was scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at Elwood Middle School.

Huntington town officials received a May 17 letter from, Syndicated Ventures, LLC, the applicant for the proposed Villadom development project, indicating it was withdrawing its request for a change of zoning application from R-40 to C-5 and C-6 in order to construct a mixed commercial development on Jericho Turnpike, according to town spokeswoman Lauren Lembo.

“As there is no longer an application in

front of the town board, the public hearing for this project is canceled,” Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said to the more than 600 gathered. “While the applicant may submit a new application in the future, they would need to start the entire process from the beginning, submitting a new plan to the town, having it reviewed by the planning board, which then would make a recommendation to the town board regarding the scheduling of a new public hearing.”

There was a thunderous round of applause from the hundreds of residents holding bright yellow “Stop Villadom” signs or wearing T-shirts reading “Stop Villadom Mall.” There were 99 public speakers who . signed up to talk, many of whom demanded answers — Gail Jospa and sought to hold the town board accountable.

“We are here tonight speaking for thousands of Huntington residents, taxpayers and voters,” Gail Jospa, of Dix Hills, said.

“We are the messengers who say we don’t want Villadom’s project in any form. We don’t want anything Mr. [Kris] Torkan has to offer.”

State police find 500 pounds of pot in East Northport New York State police announced the arrest of two men who allegedly had more than 500 pounds of marijuana stored in two East Northport facilities.

The state police’s Troop L narcotics unit, based in Farmingdale, along with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office arrested two men for allegedly possessing drugs after a long-term investigation. Police executed search warrants at a Dix Hills home and two storage facilities, located at 2083 and 2091 Jericho Turnpike in East Northport. The officers found more than 500 pounds of marijuana, which was estimated to have a street value of more than $2 million. In addition, there was more than $200,000 in cash along with multiple vehicles and real property seized as result of the investigation, according

to state police.

State police arrested two Dix Hills residents Steve Polizzi, 57, and Wesley Snider, 28.

Polizzi is charged with two counts of firstdegree criminal possession of marijuana, one count of second-degree criminal possession of marijuana and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Snider is charged with one count of firstdegree criminal possession of marijuana and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.w Both men were arraigned May 10 in 1st District Court in Central Islip, and will be held in Riverhead county jail in lieu of bail.

Attorney information for the defendants was not immediately available.

Northport VA looks to make $21M in repairs under 3-year plan The new leadership at the reigns of the 90-year-old Northport VA Medical Center has unveiled a three-year plan aimed at making $21 million in repairs to address critical infrastructure and staffing concerns.

Director Scott Guermonprez said since taking up the position in June 2017, he has drafted together a plan that looks to address the out-of-date utilities systems and crumbling buildings that led to the closure of its homeless veterans housing in January, and a brief shutdown of its operating rooms in February.

“There was a facility condition assessment done last year that came out that said if we were to try to fully rehabilitate the entire campus it would cost more than $450 million, or to try to build a new one would cost more than $1 billion,” Guermonprez said. “We have to figure out how we focus on the resources we have and use them as quickly and prudently as possible.”

There are approximately $7 million in projects getting underway this year, according to the director, which includes replacing four of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning units of the main medical center as well as a new roof.

The VA director said they had also received approximately $1.1 million to renovate the homeless veterans shelter, run by the nonprofit Beacon House, with new ductwork and an electronically controlled heating and cooling system. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, according to Guermonprez.

The first major project Prue is expected to tackle is the demolition of long-abandoned buildings 1 and 2 which housed the facility’s original hospital, standing opposite the current medical center.

“It’s an eyesore,” the director said. “One of the biggest complaints we’ve had with

Northport is insufficient parking. When it was built nearly 40 years ago, the intent was to demolish those buildings. It never happened.”

He anticipates the Department of Veterans Affairs will give him clearance to move forward shortly, with demolition tentatively scheduled to start in the late fall. These are two of 428 buildings nationwide, that the Veterans Administration has plans to demolish or repurpose. The space cleared will be converted to additional parking space for the medical center, allowing a few hundred spaces to be added.

“We want to add valet parking,” Guermonprez said. “We have the largest number of veterans over 80 years old in the New York-

New Jersey health care system. We want to make it easier for them.”

Adding more parking and upgrading the heating and cooling systems will allow Northport VA to consolidate its medical treatment services into the medical center.

Currently some programs like the outpatient mental health services and opthalmology are in outlying buildings.

“While this VA has plenty of work ahead of them, I am confident that they have a plan and are moving in the right direction to ultimately upgrade and restore these facilities so that they can properly serve and honor our veterans here and in the community,” Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) said, after touring the VA facility with the director in late April.

Other key components of the VA’s threeyear plan include replacing the campus’ steam vents and expanding its security force to deal with modern threats, said Colleen Luckner, associate director of the facility.

“In addition to the construction projects, we are expanding police services, given the unfortunate incidents occurring across the nation with shootings, as we want to keep our veterans safe,” Luckner said.

The Northport VA will be hiring additional staff for its police department as well as implementing new systems such as additional cameras, panic alarms and other such measures.

Later this year, the Northport VA expects to celebrate the grand opening of expansion of its Riverhead outpatient clinic to include more physical therapy space and hearing services in July, before adding physical therapy, occupational therapy and more services to its Patchogue location.

Huntington NYPD officer dies in wedding-day crash Two New York City police officers from Long Island, one a groom celebrating his wedding day, were killed in an upstate car crash May 20.

Huntington Station resident Michael Colangelo, 31, and John Martinez, 39, of Hauppauge were both killed in a single-car crash Sunday in Shandaken. New York State police said Martinez was driving a 2018 Maserati southbound on Oliveria Road at approximately 11:23 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, striking a large tree and flipping the car. The vehicle came to a stop on its roof.

Both Colangelo, the front seat passenger, and Martinez were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger was transported to Albany Medical Center with non-lifethreatening injuries, according to state police spokesman Trooper Steven Nevel.

Colangelo was a member of the NYPD’s canine unit who had married his sweetheart, Katherine Berger, earlier that day at the Full Moon Resort in the Hudson Valley. Martinez worked for the NYPD’s 84th Precinct’s detective squad.

The men had departed from Full Moon Resort, but their planned destination was not known, according to Nevel. He said the

stretch of Oliveria Road is very rural, curves and has no street lighting. State police said based on skid marks left on the roadway that the vehicle was traveling well in excess of the posted 40 mph speed limit at the time of the accident.

“We don’t know the exact speed they were going at this time,” Nevel said. “We

are looking to get that information from the black box of the Maserati.”

State police said they did not know if drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the deadly crash, but an investigation remains ongoing. An autopsy of the driver was scheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 21, but the results would not be immediately available.

“We’ve interviewed several people at the wedding reception, and everyone was very distraught,” Nevel said.

Colangelo and his wife had planned to travel to Costa Rica for their honeymoon, according to their www.honeyfund.com site, which read, “We’ve lived together quite a while with all our pots and pans, and as we don’t need very many home goods we’ve got another plan. We know it’s not traditional, but it would be a lot of fun, to have some items on our wedding list that will help us catch some sun.”

The five occupants of the SUV, three adults and two children, were transported to Huntington Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Silverman said. The driver of the car declined any medical assistance.

Huntington Station man arrested in connection with March shooting Police have arrested a Huntington Station man for his alleged involvement in a March 31 shooting in Lindenhurst.

Hector Gonzalez, 27, an alleged Latin Kings gang member, was arrested May 15 and charged with allegedly murdering Herminio Torres, 25, of Elizabeth, New Jersey. Attorney information for Gonzalez was not immediately available.

An altercation started inside and continued outside at 105 Grados, located at 105 Sunrise Highway, at approximately 3:20 a.m. During the fight, two men were shot and three men were stabbed.

“The district attorney’s office remains committed to eradicating dangerous street gangs from our communities and cracking down on senseless gun violence,” District Attorney Tim Sini (D) said. “We will do everything in our power to bring this individual,

Torres, was transported by the Lindenhurst Fire Department to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was pronounced dead. The second shooting victim, 26, self-transported to an area hospital and was subsequently transported to another hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A 23-year-old man was stabbed and transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two other men who were stabbed, ages 28 and 35, were transported to local hospitals where they were treated and released.

Five people were injured Sunday when an SUV flipped onto its side on Larkfield Road in East Northport.

The East Northport Fire Department and Suffolk County police responded to reports of a motor vehicle crash near the intersection of Larkfield and Cedar roads at approximately 7 p.m. May 20. The collision involved a Toyota SUV that had overturned onto its side and had swiped another car.

Firefighters had to use the heavy rescue tools including the Jaws of Life to remove the roof from the vehicle, according to fire department spokesman Steve Silverman.

Suffolk County police 2nd Squad detectives are investigating a car accident that killed a man in Greenlawn Friday night.

Police said Michael Spera was driving a 1995 Nissan westbound on Clay Pitts Road near Stratford Avenue when he lost control and the car overturned at approximately 6:50 p.m. May 18. Spera, 34, of East Northport, was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Christopher Walsh, 36, of East Northport, a passenger in the car, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the 2nd Squad at 631-854-8252.

Many spoke out against the downzoning of the proposed 49-acre site from R-40, which permits single-family homes on one-acre pieces of property, to C-5 and C-6 commercial zoning, which permits for shopping districts and general business.

“The last administration downzoned every piece of property that came before the board,” Commack resident Nancy Gambi said. “There’s not a need for this, we should not downzone our property anymore.”

Many residents pointed to The Seasons at Elwood, a community of 265 units for senior citizens, which is currently under construction, as downzoning granted by the former town administration.

The program has been especially essential and therapeutic for those in the area who have suffered water-related tragedies like Nicole Delfino, a Centereach mother whose 15-month-old daughter Kyleigh died after falling into a pool at a family party Aug. 15, 2016. Delfino said Kyleigh was in a crowded living room while she was helping her 5-yearold daughter Liliana in the bathroom. Kyleigh found her way outside and into the pool.

“Kyleigh was bright,” Delfino said. “She had her whole life ahead of her, and it was taken away in an instant.”

Only a few months after Kyleigh’s passing, Delfino enrolled Liliana in the program to make sure something like what happened to Kyleigh never happened again. Her 6-month-old daughter will begin ISR lessons in a few weeks.

“After five weeks of the intense training

and a little bit of tears, she can now save herself,” she said of Liliana. “It means everything to me, and she’s phenomenal in the program. If my daughter [Kyleigh] would’ve taken ISR lessons, she could have fallen into the pool, gained her composure and floated on her back until she was able to literally swim to the side of the pool.”

She said she encourages any parent to enroll their child in the program.

“I would highly suggest it to anyone, because at the end of the day, who is responsible to save them are themselves,” Delfino said.

“All the layers of protection — you should have a gate around your pool and you should have an alarm — can fail, and if they do, you and only you can save yourself.”

Seventh- and eighth-grade students at Northport Middle School traveled back in time to the Civil War days via a Civil War encampment of reenactors from Boots & Saddles Productions.

Fifteen reenactors, with a deep

knowledge and passion for the Civil War, performed at five different stations. These stations covered the United States Cavalry, complete with horses, Confederate and Union infantry demonstrations, an exploration of the time period’s kitchen and

cooking, a Civil War medical tent and an artillery station complete with an authentic war canon.

The program was exciting and students had many questions for the reenactors, sparking a deeper interest in U.S. history.

Simple acts of kindness During the second week of May, students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District gave back to the community by giving up portions of their homerooms and recesses to create fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus — an organization that gives homemade blankets to children in need.

Students have already assembled more than 50 blankets.

Librarian Judy Boshnack applied for and was awarded a grant through the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation (HACEF) and purchased fleece blanket kits to donate

to those in need. After the blankets were prepped by Boshnack and the rest of the library staff, students gathered around tables and knotted the sides of each fleece, making thick and cozy creations ready for those who needed them.

“It’s a beautiful way to give back to the community,” Boshnack said, “and it teaches our students that simple acts of kindness can truly make a difference, and help others.”

In addition, students, staff and local community members have created crochet squares to be connected to make additional blankets to be donated.

Junior and senior members, along with adviser Nicole Gendjoian, spent three hours collecting trash and cleaning the beach. They also helped distribute mulch on the land-

scaped portions of the grounds. The HBCA is the largest privately owned beach on the North Shore and serves the members of the community in many ways — and keeping it clean is important.

Book Whisperer visits

Author and staff development leader Donalyn Miller visited educators in the Elwood school district May 9. Miller, also known as the Book Whisperer, is passionate about the importance of “free-choice reading” and travels all over the country sharing guidance and resources with educators to help foster the love of reading in children.

During her presentation, Miller traveled through different genres such as short nonfiction, young adult and graphic novels, recommending new books from each wheelhouse.

She emphasized the importance of

teaching stories that promote inclusivity and exposing students to stories from diverse people groups that they may not have heard otherwise — stories about important historical figures like Harriet Tubman, Harvey Milk and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Miller recommended different approaches to teaching these books in the classroom, helping students to develop their own reading identities.

One such approach was an unconventional way of study — focusing on the text itself, then the historical context and, finally, the illustrations; each as a separate entity.

Huntington’s sophomore tennis star is headed to the state championships after capturing his second consecutive Section XI singles crown in thrilling fashion — battling past Half Hollow Hills East senior Abhinav Srivastava in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 May 18 at William Floyd.

Flores was forced to serve underhand most of the county tournament following a shoulder injury. And even had time to rest during a 72-hour delay between the start and finish of the third set, where he remained tied with the No. 2 seed, 4-4.

“I was focused on recovering and just resting up my shoulder,” Flores said of his time during the break. “I think [the rain] helped in a way, because before I had to serve underhand ... and this is the first time in the tournament I got to serve overhand.”

Once the set resumed, Flores won the final two points to take the match.

“Jack stayed focused during the layoff,” Huntington’s head coach Jamie Fishlow

said. “We got him treatment on his shoulder and he did some light hitting. At that point in the match it was mostly mental, and he handled the pressure well. He has worked hard to get to this point and we look forward to the state tournament.”

Flores and Srivastava met in the Suffolk County Division I finals with Flores finishing first in that match, too. But the Blue Devil standout was pushed to the limit then and had to summon every bit of the toughness he’s known for. He was able to do just that and more in Section XI final.

“He’s probably my best player in my whole career,” said Fishlow, who’s been at the Huntington helm for 19 seasons.

Flores advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, which begins Thursday, May 31 and ends Saturday, June 2.

Tornadoes boys tennis sweeps Brentwood Harborfields faced No. 8 Westhampton in second round May 23

BY BILL LANDON Harborfields’ strength lies in its singles play.

The No. 9-seeded boys tennis team swept all four singles spots — all the Tornadoes would need in a best-of-seven series — and went on to blank visiting Brentwood 7-0 in the first round of the Suffolk County playoffs.

Harborfields junior Alex Rzehak, who earned All-State honors the last two years, led his team at first singles. He shut down Brentwood’s Armando Santana 6-0, 6-0.

“He’s our No. 1 player,” Harborfields head coach Bob Davis said of his state tournament alternate. “He plays the best kid on every other team in our division. In fact, the top four finishers in the county are all from our division. This is the second year in a row he’s the alternate. He’s a junior, so he’ll get another bite at the apple.”

Eighth-grader Chris Qi, at fourth singles, also shut out his Brentwood opponent.

“He wound up with a 9-3 record this year in our division — that’s not easy,” the coach said. “We have some kids who are serious about tennis, and [slowly but surely] we’re getting there.”

Other young Harborfields athletes shined during the match. Freshman Michael Singer nipped his challenger 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.

Michael made this year’s All-County team and won a round in the county singles tournament.

“We’re hoping for big things from him [moving forward,]” Davis said.

Rounding out singles action was junior Bobby Bellino, who won his match 6-0, 6-1.

“He could wind up being the best of all,” the coach said of his third singles player.

“He’s got amazing tools, he just has to work on his consistency.”

The second doubles pair of John Mulé and Luke Verdon competed in the only match that went to three sets. After falling 3-6 in the first, the seniors rallied back 6-3, 6-1 to claim a win in the second-to-last match of the afternoon.

“It was interesting,” Mulé said. “We really didn’t play much at all last week because of the weather. We may have underestimated our opponent at first, they’re pretty good.”

“It’ll be a lot of pressure on our doubles guys — they have to come up big and get those crucial points because if one of us in singles loses, we need a doubles team to pull through,” he said. “I’m just going to go in with a clear head and not think about the pressure that’s riding on the game … just go out and have fun, try to find my opponent’s weakness and use that to my advantage.”

The Huntington senior paced her way to a first-place finish in the Division II 3,000-meter run at the Suffolk County girls track and field division championships May 21 at Connetquot.

The Division I Lehigh University cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field team-comit crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 18.25 seconds, almost 11 seconds ahead of second place.

She contributed 10 points to Huntington’s total 14 over four events that were scored, which was good for a third-place tie in the school standings.

Junior Nephar Durand scored four points for her fourth-place finish in the discus (98-07).

Not part of scoring was senior Katie Seccafico’s strong showing in the pentathlon. She leapt 1.42 meters in the high jump (second), tossed 7.8 meters in the shot put (third) and ran the 100 hurdles in 20.17 (sixth). Sophomore Alicia Brooks came in ninth in the 100 dash and junior Hadley Clayton 15th in the 800 run.

Letters to the editor

While we wait for the federal government to do something about gun control, kids are dying in America’s schools.

For children and school staff members to be filled with fear and anxiety every day thinking they may get killed is unacceptable.

Fortunately, there are things that can be done on the local level, even in our homes, to make schools — places that should foster learning, not fear — safer in the short term.

Fox News recently reported nearly 40 deaths and various injuries resulted from school shootings since the beginning of 2017 in 15 elementary and secondary schools. CNN, which includes universities in its reports, said 22 learning institutions have been the site of shootings in 2018 alone, accounting for more than 30 deaths. Hitting closer to home, Suffolk County Police Department Capt. Kevin Williams spoke at a May 8 Smithtown Town Board meeting and said since the Parkland, Florida, shooting Feb. 14, the 4th Precinct has received a threat against Smithtown-area schools approximately once a day. He said that trend holds true across Suffolk County.

What do we do on the local level? We have covered a number of school board meetings where parents have been allowed to debate about what they feel are the best solutions to keep their children and staff members safe. While some of these board meetings have gone on for hours, due to resistance to ideas like armed guards and metal detectors, keeping our children safe is worth every hour spent at these meetings and every penny the district pays for new measures that will help keep kids out of harm’s way. We encourage parents to keep speaking up. As a result of responding to concerns, many school districts have added additional psychologists to their staffs, too, to allow for easier accessibility. New York State Legislature passed a package of bills in the wake of Parkland allotting more dollars to security and mental health services to districts that want them.

Another example of parents and school administration working together to find solutions occurred at the Shoreham-Wading River’s March 6 board of education meeting. Superintendent Gerard Poole outlined measures the school was taking after the shooting in Parkland. Among the plans was installing a Raptor Visitor Management System in all buildings, a web-based monitoring software designed to track visitors and electronically check them against public databases.

The same meeting also included a forum for students to express their concerns and give suggestions on how to better protect their schools.

A web-based app called “report it,” which many Long Island school districts are using, was also introduced earlier this month to help encourage students to speak up when they see or hear things that trouble them or make them uncomfortable.

School is not the only place where something can be done while we wait. If you own a gun, and keep it in your home, keep it locked up and keep the bullets secured in a separate location. Most of all, explain to your children and teens that a gun is not a toy. Too many news reports begin with a child getting a hold of a parent’s gun. If you are resistant to stricter gun control laws, we beg you to at least ensure you’ve taken all of the possible steps necessary to lock up your weapons.

There’s the issue of bullying, too. Antonios Pagourtzis, the father of Santa Fe shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis, claimed his son was bullied at the school. The best conversations about how to treat people can occur at home. Talk to your children about being kind to others and to speak up when they see someone being harassed. Most of all, set a good example.

As journalists, we plan to do our part by continuing to report on the conversations going on at local schools, whether they are happening at a board meeting or during a student-organized walkout.

When it comes to legislation, we have no choice but to wait — but we won’t idly sit by and neither should you.

It’s no secret that the Long Island Power Authority’s campaign to significantly reduce its current tax assessment on the Northport power plant has raised serious concerns among the taxpayers in the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District. As a lifelong resident of the Town of Huntington and longtime taxpayer in the Northport-East Northport school district, I want to assure you I share your concerns and will continue to fight to protect our schools and our community.

As our area’s voice in Albany, I have been very proactive in my response to the LIPA tax certiorari issue from the very beginning. Not only did I vote against LIPA legislation to form the Long Island PSEG because of its failure to adequately address the tax certiorari issue, but I was also one of the first advocates to call for the repowering of the Northport Power Station to its full capacity prior to any new power plant construction on Long Island.

Indeed, I have strongly urged LIPA to address the key issues related to the repowering and retrofitting of the Northport Power Station and to uphold the previous agreements it made with the Town of Huntington, as residents cannot and should not be burdened by the unfair tax increases that would arise from the proposed financial settlements. On top of the environmental and health costs families have already had to endure, we are all in agreement that any outcome that does not acknowledge LIPA’s responsibilities and fully take into account residents’ concerns remains unacceptable.

As we all know, this is an issue that has the potential to inflict a devastating blow on the local tax

In response to these ominous possibilities, I became a co-sponsor of Assembly bills A.7540 and A.294. These legislative proposals would provide additional financial assistance to school districts and local governments experiencing economic strain related to a tax challenge and/or court ruling against them. Additionally, in light of recent legislation introduced by state Sens. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) and Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) that would lengthen the time for the reduction of taxes paid

by LIPA on power plants to 15 years while expanding the use of an existing state power plant cessation mitigation fund, I am pleased to announce that I have introduced a companion bill (A.10496) in the state Assembly in tandem with Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove). Ultimately, what this all boils down to goes well beyond any new financial burdens citizens and municipalities will have to bear, but strikes at the very future and stability of our community, making it imperative that we fully prepare for any contingency that may arise from the judicial proceedings.

Furthermore, while LIPA has constructed several power lines beneath the Long Island Sound to provide electricity to residents, I believe this is an unnecessary step that would simply put us at the whim of other power companies operating throughout the region.

As such, I am a strong proponent of creating the necessary infrastructure to establish Long Island as a self-sustaining energy producer, and I believe upgrading and improving the massive and inefficient Northport plant has the potential to help lead us in that direction. In short, repowering the plant is a win-win for Long Islanders and the residents of Huntington, as this would end the tax certiorari issue while also eliminating the need for the construction of more power stations on Long Island.

I will continue to support any efforts which work in favor of the residents of Huntington, and I look forward to working with our local leaders in the town to avoid these financially devastating property tax hikes.

Notes from a 2017 interview with the late Tom Wolfe

H

ow often do you get to talk to someone whose legend loomed large over your childhood?

Last year, I had the privilege of interviewing author Tom Wolfe, who died last week at the age of 88. Wolfe wrote “The Right Stuff,” “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” and “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” among others. I spoke with Wolfe about astronaut Scott Kelly, who was so inspired by “The Right Stuff” that he directed a life he considered somewhat aimless toward

My conversation was rewarding and memorable, so I thought I’d share my interview with the legendary author.

DD: Kelly credits you with putting him on a path that led him to spend almost a year aboard the International Space Station. Is there a satisfaction that comes from that?

TW: Nothing else I’ve written has

had such a beautiful result. He told me he’d been floundering around trying to figure out what to do with his life. He hadn’t been doing well in school. Then he just got the idea of going into space and became an astronaut.

DD: Did you know he took “The Right Stuff” with him?

TW: He sent me from the space station a picture of the cover on his iPad. That was one of the greatest messages I ever got.

DD: Do you think Kelly’s mission increased the excitement about space?

TW: There’s been a general lack of a sense of heroism in much of the post-World War II era and there were people who responded to the space program in general in that fashion.

DD: How does the excitement now compare to the early days of the space program?

TW: John Glenn’s return created a lot of excitement. At that time, we seemed to be at war in space with the Russians. That was what kept the space program going. There was always this threat. It’s very hard to hit the Earth from space. You’ve got three speeds: the speed of what you fired the rocket with, then you’ve got the speed at the end of that opening shot and you’ve got the speed of hitting the

Earth, which is moving.

DD: How do you think people will react to Kelly’s mission?

TW: It remains to be seen whether it inspires young people the way the Mercury program did.

DD: What drove the space program until that point?

TW: Wernher van Braun [a German engineer who played a seminal role in advancing American rocket science] spoke in his last year.

The point of the space program was not to beat the Russians. It was to prepare for the day when the sun burns out and we have to leave Earth and go somewhere else. It’s hard to imagine everybody shipping off to another heavenly body.

DD: Getting back to Kelly, how difficult do you think Kelly’s mission was?

TW: Scott Kelly’s adventures were a test of the human body and the psyche. Being that removed from anybody you could talk to and see must be a terrible stress. That’s what he and others in the space station are chosen for.

DD: Do people like Kelly still need “the right stuff” to be astronauts?

TW: It’s the same except anyone coming into the program is more confident that these things can be done. For Mercury astronauts, these

things were totally new. The odds against you, the odds of death, were very high.

DD: What advice did you give to Kelly when he started writing his book?

TW: Begin at the beginning.

So many of the astronauts and other people who have memorable experiences will start with the adventure to get you interested.

Then, the second chapter, suddenly you’re saying, “Harold Bumberry was born in 1973,” and it makes you take a deep breath [and say], ‘OK, here it comes.” Whereas starting at the beginning always works.

DD: What do you think of the movies made about your books?

TW: I think they’re terrible. Three of my books were made into movies and I disliked them all. The reason being they didn’t do it like I did.

You can’t do a lot of things in a movie that you can in print. You’re better at presenting themes, better at dialogue. You can hear it, you can’t get inside a mind of a character the way you can in print. Movies don’t have time.

DD: What impact did Scott Kelly’s being inspired by your book have on you?

TW: It’s the best compliment I’ve ever gotten.

18. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named Ahmal. The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him Juan.

Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.”

19. A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large.

20. And finally, there was the person who sent 20 different puns to his friends with the hope that at least 10 of the puns would make them laugh.
