The Town of Huntington will hold a public hearing May 17 at 7 p.m. at Elwood Middle School’s auditorium on developer Villadom Corp.’s request to build a mixed-used mall on Jericho Turnpike. It will be the first public hearing to be held in a location other than Huntington Town Hall.

Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R), during his 2017 campaign for town office, had proposed rotating where town board meetings are held in an attempt to increase accessibility to residents. He said he felt the strong com-

munity interest in Villadom Corp.’s proposal provided a good opportunity to try relocating.

“The middle school auditorium has more seating,” the supervisor said. “I am sure it will be a long hearing of several hours of comments.”

An online petition started against the proposed Villadom mall has gathered more than 4,000 signatures since mid-April. Residents have voiced concerns at the May 1 town board meeting about the potential environmental impact of the development’s stormwater runoff on drinking water as well as potentially increased traffic on Jericho Turnpike and Old Country and Deer Park roads.

Recognizing signs of a stroke During American Stroke Month, May, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourage Long Island residents to join together to end the leading cause of death in New York.

Despite striking more than seven million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable.

According to the American Stroke Association, 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

Prevention is key. High blood pressure is the most common controllable cause of stroke. If you have it, you need to check it and keep it under control to help prevent a stroke. If you’ve had a stroke, you should ask your doctor for guidance on preventing a second one.

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefined high blood pressure as 130/80 mmHg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke.

Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access lifesaving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, teaches the acronym FAST to help people recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs: • F: face drooping — does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

• A: arm weakness — is one arm weak

American Stroke Association has tips for prevention during American Stroke Month. or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

• S: speech difficulty — is speech slurred, are they unable to speak or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

• T: time to call 911 — if the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Cook suggests eminent domain to take Northport plant

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Town of Huntington officials are moving toward making a power play against Long Island Power Authority and National Grid to take over control of the Northport power plant.

Councilman Gene Cook (R) has called for town residents to participate in a letterwriting campaign asking Huntington’s elected officials to consider utilizing eminent domain to take control of Northport power plant.

His proposal comes days after LIPA allegedly submitted documents to Suffwolk County Supreme Court for its pending lawsuit against the town, in which it disputes the tax value of the plant, claiming the structure only has a fair market value of $193 million, according to Cook.

“Their estimate is so far out of wack on it, they are almost like giving us the plant,” the councilman said. “If they want to give it to us, I want to take it.”

Cook said he thinks the Northport facility is one of the biggest power plants in the Northeast, which will become more valuable with future improvements. He estimated the power station could produce $5 billion in

revenue per year for the town if it took over operation of the facility. He suggested the name “Huntington Power Service Company.”

“We want to serve our residents, not be an authority over them like LIPA has done,” Cook said. “They have taken LI Power Authority as ‘we have authority over everyone.’”

The councilman drafted a resolution he said he plans to present at the May 17 town board meeting for Huntington to hold a public hearing. If approved, a hearing will be held June 5 at 2 p.m. for residents to voice their thoughts and concerns on the acquisition of the plant from National Grid, which is the owner of the power station.

“The basis of this acquisition will be for the purpose of delivery to the public of electrical power in a safe and cost-efficient manner,” reads the draft resolution.

Under New York State law, the town must publish its findings and determinations on the proposed acquisition from the public hearing within 90 days. The Town of Huntington is due in court to face LIPA less than a week later June 11.

“We are looking at every facet of possibility here when looking at the LIPA situation because it’s a very serious situation,” Supervisor

Chad Lupinacci (R) said. “Any possibility that comes up we will review with our attorney — we will review it with experts to see if it’s feasible.”

Even if the town initiated the process of obtaining the power plan via eminent domain, it would not resolve the town’s lawsuit with LIPA. In addition to seeking a 90 percent reduction of taxes on the power plant, LIPA is asking for the town to reimburse it for alleged overpayment of taxes each year since it filed the claim in 2010 — totaling more than $500 million.

“Let’s save the consulting and legal expenses of evaluating this idea, which would be fiscally disastrous to the town, its taxpayers and wouldn’t resolve the pending tax certiorari litigation,” LIPA spokesman Sid Nathan said in a statement.

LIPA disputes that the Town of Huntington could turn a profit operating the station, claiming Northport power plant is operated at a loss. The power company said its contract with National Grid requires it to pay all costs to run the plant — including $80 million in annual property taxes leveraged by the Town of Huntington — which exceeds its revenue.

control of the plant, all beneficial tax revenue would cease, leaving residents to pay more for their government services.

“We hope the town will join with other local communities on Long Island that are working with LIPA to reach a fair settlement offer that puts an unsustainable property tax situation at the Northport plant back on a sustainable path,” Nathan said.

The Town of Brookhaven and Village of Port Jefferson both announced they had reached settlements over the tax assessed value of the Port Jeff plant with LIPA in early April.

If the lawsuit is decided in LIPA’s favor, the utility company estimates that Town of Huntington residents would see their taxes increase by $62 a month, with Northport-East Northport school district residents responsible for an additional $210 to $220 per month.

Lupinacci has said the town remains open to bargaining with LIPA, while Cook said the only negotiation he is for is LIPA agreeing to withdraw its lawsuit.

“I will fight to the death on this one,” Cook said. “Either they want to be good neighbors or they don’t. If they don’t, they can hit the road.”

Northridge opening hailed as start of Huntington Station’s renaissance

Town of Huntington officials hope the completion of the first concrete project in Huntington Station’s revitalization plan will pave the way for future success.

Town officials and more than 50 Huntington Station community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Northridge apartments May 7 with a ribbon cutting and tours of the building.

“The wonderful excitement in the air here is testament to how we all feel when we see this building,” said Councilwoman Joan Cergol (D). “It’s standout gorgeous, and it has really set the bar in Huntington Station for more mixed-use development to follow.”

The Northridge apartment building, located at the intersection of Northridge Street and New York Avenue, is one of the first steps in the town’s Huntington Station revitalization project that is being overseen by master developer Renaissance Downtowns, a nationally renowned development group based out of Plainview. Construction of the mixed-use building began in January 2017 by Huntington-based Blue & Gold Holdings contractors. It consists of 6,500-squarefeet of retail space on the ground level, with a total of 16 one-bedroom apartments on the second and third floors.

“This building takes the traditional mixedused look of the old Huntington Station and

Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) shared how his grandfather once owned a butcher shop on New York Avenue and how his mother was raised in an apartment above the shop.

“We know Huntington Station is a great place to raise a family with two great school districts,” Lupinacci said. “We want to make sure we continue to invest in the area through

businesses and allow more people to live in the area too.”

May’s Gourmet Delicatessen of Huntington is the first and only commercial tenant to be confirmed moving into the Northridge building. It will serve as a second location, according to owner May Ramos, who is expanding her business after eight years. While Ramos admitted to having concerns about adequate customer parking, the close proximity to the Huntington Long Island Rail Road Station makes her confident her shop will succeed.

“I’m a believer,” she said. “I’m taking it

the same way I took the challenge of my first location. I said, ‘It’s not a location, it’s a destination.’ If people want to get to you, they are going to find a way.”

Ramos will be able to begin setting up shop this summer. She said she hopes to have the Huntington Station deli open for customers before the upcoming holiday season.

Deborah D’Ambrosio, a leasing agent with Signature Premier Properties, offered tours of the apartments to those interested May 7 as approximately 20 percent have been rented within the first week. The cost of one-bedroom apartments start at $2,350 up to $2,475 per month. Each unit has an identical layout, according to D’Ambrosio, with the exception of some second-floor units which have a slightly larger bedroom due to the building’s configuration. All rentals come with one assigned parking spot and buzz-in entry, with first-floor apartments being handicapped accessible.

“As someone who lives in Huntington, who grew up in Huntington, this was a particular moment of pride for our family to build this,” said Grant Havasy, managing partner of Blue & Gold Holdings. “The revitalization has begun. The renaissance has begun, and so it shall continue, and we are happy to set the high watermark.”

The next project slated to begin as part of Huntington Station’s revitalization program is the construction of Gateway Plaza, located just north on New York Avenue of the Northridge building.

Proposed changes to Gateway Plaza raise alarm

A proposed change of plans for a $22 million Huntington Station revitalization project is being met with resistance by community residents.

Huntington Station revitalization master developer Renaissance Downtowns and developer G2G Development submitted a request April 24 seeking to change the composition of apartments that will make up the Gateway Plaza building to be constructed on the corner of Olive Street and New York Avenue.

The original plans for the 61,000-squarefoot building called for a mix of 33 one-bedroom apartments and 33 studio apartments in a mixed-used building over restaurant, retail and office space.

Now, the developer seeks to create 11 twobedroom apartments, increase it to 45 onebedroom units and construct only 10 studios.

“The preapproved square footage was redistributed into a new mix based on voiced community requests for two bedrooms, market research and feedback to Northridge realtors on what local residents are searching for,” reads a statement on Source the Station, Renaissance Downtown’s online portal on the revitalization projects for Huntington Station residents.

Renaissance Downtowns and Huntington Town officials celebrated the grand opening of Northridge apartments, the first concrete project of Huntington Station revitalization, earlier this week. The mixed-use building has 16 one-bedroom apartments for rent on the

second and third floors.

“When we started leasing [Northridge], the agent got a lot of inquiries from people looking for two-bedroom apartments,” said Ryan Porter, Co-CEO and president of Renaissance Downtowns.

Deborah D’Ambrosio, a Signature Premier Properties agent who is leasing Northridge’s apartments, said Monday at Northridge’s grand opening she had not personally gotten requests for any two-bedroom units, but that her company had marketed the property for one-bedroom only.

Huntington Station resident Matt Harris said he objected to the request to construct two-bedroom units, pointing out that the change is anticipated to bring seven schoolaged children into the school district.

“The people of Huntington Station have been lied to for 48 years,” Harris said.

“Developer after developer after developer has lied to us and now Renaissance is doing it.”

Porter admitted as public awareness of the requested apartment development has risen, he’s heard out several concerns raised by other community members.

The proposed changes were only received by the town’s Department of Planning and Environment after the board approved transferring of the town-owned parcel at 1000 New York Avenue to the developer 4-1 at its April 10 meeting, according to town spokeswoman Lauren Lembo. Councilman Ed Smyth (R) had been the sole objector to the land transfer calling it a “betrayal of public trust.”

“I voted into [Gateway Plaza] for the studio apartments,” said Councilman Eugene

Cook (R). “I’m asking the town attorney to look into this and see what’s happening. That to me, is entirely uncalled for.”

Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said the town attorney’s office is currently reviewing the developer’s request and market demand is one factor that can be taken into consideration. The town attorney may consult a real

estate expert if it is deemed necessary, according to Lupinacci.

Renaissance Downtowns expects to close on the land sale of 1000-1026 New York Ave. properties needed to construct Gateway Plaza this month, according to Porter, with a hope of starting demolition of the existing structures this summer.

Suffolk County police and Huntington Fire Department volunteers responded to reports of a vehicle careening into the side of JoS. A. Bank clothing store, on the corner of Main Street and Stewart Avenue, May 5, at about 4 p.m, according to fire department spokesman Steve Silverman. Police said an elderly woman driving a 1999 Subaru, traveling westbound on Main Street, had attempted to make a right turn onto Stewart Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle.

The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported via Huntington Community First Aid Squad to Huntington Hospital for treatment, according to Silverman. Six individuals inside the store at the time of the accident escaped uninjured.

Town of Huntington Building Department was notified of the crash and sent to check the building for structural damage.

Tom Laurice, manager for the Huntington JoS. A. Bank location, said the store was closed May 6 and remained closed as of 1 p.m. May 7, as the building’s structural integrity still needed to be evaluated by a Huntington Town building inspector. Laurice said he hopes to reopen for business following whatever repairs are deemed necessary this week.

Northport taxpayers will be casting their ballots three times as they head to the polls on the school district’s $166.8 million proposed 2018-19 budget and two propositions.

Northport-East Northport board of education has proposed a $166,810,381 budget for the upcoming 2018-19 school year, representing a 2.15 percent increase, or $3.5 million more than the current year. In addition, it is asking residents to vote on two propositions regarding capital reserves and improvements to the district’s buildings and facilities.

“I think that not only were we able to maintain our instruction programs and our extracurricular and cocurricular programs,” Superintendent Robert Banzer said. “We were able to move some other initiatives forward. There’s been a lot of talk this year about making sure we are addressing the needs of our students.”

Under the proposed budget, Banzer said the district would be able to initiate a new

Huntington school district taxpayers will be asked to vote three times when they head to the polls May 15.

Huntington’s board of education has put forth a proposed $129,812,991 budget for the 2018-19 school year. The board members also elected to put two additional measures asking for the release of reserve funds to tackle various capital projects and repairs needed in the district’s eight buildings.

“I do believe the budget we are discussing this evening does not short change any educational programs,” Superintendent James Polansky said. “We’ve been very responsible in terms of how we put our budget together and taking into account the taxpayer burden the way we do.”

Polansky said the district has set aside funds to continue to increase and expand its education programs. Huntington High School will have a computer science course added as well as a virtual enterprise course, a new business elective which simulates an entrepreneurial business for students to run.

The proposed budget also includes funds to redesign the math curriculum for the midlevel grades and augmenting the elementary school and social studies programs.

If approved, the adopted 2018-19 spending plan would represent a budget-to-budget increase of 2.85 percent, or approximately $3.6 million more than the current year.

The primary costs driving up the budget include the district’s approximately $800,000 increase in contributions to the state’s Teachers’ Retirement System, health care insurance for faculty and staff and rising transportation costs.

If approved by voters, the average Huntington homeowner will see their annual school taxes increase by an estimated $213.69, or approximately $17.81 a month.

This is based on the average home having an assessed value of $3,430, in which an assessed value is a dollar value placed on the property by the Town of Huntington solely for the purposes of calculating taxes based on comparable home sales and other factors.

Proposition 2 Proposition 2 will ask Huntington residents to approve the release of about $7 million from the district’s capital reserves fund for critical infrastructure repairs. The list of projects includes the replacement of the roofs at three elementary schools, Flower Hill, Jefferson and Southdown at $1.5 million each; tile replacement in 17 bathrooms at Jefferson and Nathaniel Woodhull School; security vestibules at Flower Hill and Washington primary schools; and replacing two of Woodhull’s boilers. If approved by voters, Proposition 2 will have no impact on the tax levy or tax rate.

Proposition 3 Under Proposition 3, the district seeks to create a new building improvement fund.

The superintendent said making a new fund is necessary in order to transfer money from the district’s existing repair reserve, which can primarily be used in emergencies, to a newly named capital reserve that will be used for turf field replacement. If Proposition 3 is approved, it will also have no impact on the tax levy or tax rate.

Huntington High School alternative high school program for students struggling with the traditional model and expand the district’s co-teaching model across all grade levels. If approved, the district will move forward with its one-to-one Chromebook initiative by providing personal laptops with Google applications to students entering ninth grade as well as purchasing a new piano for its music department. The district hopes to purchase new athletic equipment for studentathletes including lacrosse helmets, treadmills, ellipticals and additional automated external defibrillators.

If approved by voters, the average Northport homeowner will see their annual school taxes increase by an estimated $159 per year.

This is based on the average home having an assessed value of $3,800, in which an assessed value is a dollar value placed on the property by the Town of Huntington solely for the purposes of calculating taxes based on comparable home sales and other factors.

Proposition 2 Proposition 2 will ask residents to approve the release of $900,000 from the district’s capital reserve funds for infrastructure upgrades and repair. The list of district -wide projects includes fencing and gate

replacement, door replacements, window replacement and heating and air conditioning unit upgrades and enhancements.

Proposition 3 Under Proposition 3, the district seeks to establish a new Capital Reserve III Fund.

The board says that the fund is necessary for several critical infrastructural improvements including roof replacements of its buildings, window replacement, bathroom replacement, masonry and concrete work, floor replacement, wall replacement, classroom renovations, library and multimedia center renovations and gym reconstruction among other projects. The district has put forth that a maximum of $20 million will be placed into this fund along with any investment income the account earns for a term of 10 years. If approved by voters, the district would move no more than $1 million from the remaining 2017-18 budget into the fund to get it started and invest no more than $2 million in each of the following school years.

The polls will be open May 15 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Dickinson Avenue Elementary, Fifth Avenue Elementary and the district’s William J. Brosnan Building.

Harborfields school district

Harborfields school district taxpayers will have the opportunity to cast their vote on the district’s $86 million proposed 2018-19 budget May 15.

Harborfields board of education has put forth a proposed $86,086,696 budget for the 2018-19 school year, an increase of nearly $2 million over the current year. It represents a tax levy increase of 2.19 percent, well within the state-mandated tax cap.

“After much discussion and input from community residents, the proposed budget provides funding for additional security enhancements throughout the district, including four new security guard positions,” said Superintendent Francesco Ianni.

The superintendent said the district will also reorganize its pupil personnel services department to include a chairperson of special

education, allowing the school psychologist more time for child-focused responsibilities.

The proposed spending plan features funding to restructure Harborfields High School’s science research program to allow the teacher to have dedicated time set aside to support students in their individual pursuit of science inquiry. Other enhancements contained in the proposed budget include a new literacy curriculum; additional resources for science classes districtwide; and new educational classes in engineering, computer science and business entrepreneurship.

If approved by voters, the average Harborfields school district resident will see their annual school taxes increase by an estimated $222.80 per year. This is based on the average home having an assessed value of $4,000, in which an assessed value is a dollar value placed on the property by the Town of Huntington solely for the purposes of calculating taxes based on comparable home sales and other factors.

The polls will be open May 15 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Oldfield Middle School.

Elwood school district

Elwood voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots on the district’s $61.6 million proposed 2018-19 budget and one additional proposition.

Elwood board of education has put forth a proposed $61,606,082 budget for the 201819 school year, an increase of nearly $1.3 million over the current year. It represents a tax levy increase of 2.71 percent well under the state-mandated tax cap.

“While the board could have proposed a tax cap-compliant budget that carried a higher tax levy increase, they wanted to remain mindful of the cost impact on residents,” Superintendent Kenneth Bossert said. “The proposed spending plan provides for a number of security and academic enhancements for students, while remaining below the allowable cap.”

The superintendent said the district will focus on strengthening its security by creating a new director or head of security position.

The additional security guards hired during the 2017-18 year will continue into next year.

Focusing on aspects of student mental health,

Bossert said the district is looking to add an additional high school guidance counselor to its staff as well as a districtwide psychologist.

The district is looking to make a transition to a nine-period day for students and support more team instruction teaching for seventh and eighth-graders. There are also funds set aside to allow for the expansion of the school’s one-to-one Chromebook initiative, a personal laptop loaded with Google applications, to its incoming 10th-grade students.

Proposition 2 In addition to the proposed budget, residents will be asked to vote on Proposition 2 under which the district seeks permission to create a capital reserve fund for future improvement projects that were not included in the bond approved earlier this year. If approved, the district would be allowed to set aside a maximum of $500,000 a year, not to exceed a total of $5 million over a 10-year period to help pay for capital projects. If Proposition 2 is approved, there will be no additional tax impact on homeowners.

Blue Devils girls track and field team celebrates seniors Eight were honored by the Huntington girls’ spring track and field team during a 77.5-70.5 win over visiting Copiague on senior day May 2.

Nicole Abbondandelo, Nicole Arenth, Charlotte Brosoff, Niamh Condon, Alexandra McKenzie, Mardnie Mentor, Nicole Muszynski and Katie Seccafico were all recognized for their efforts and contributions to the program.

“Being on Huntington track has meant more to me than I could ever have imagined,” Abbondandelo said. “I have been lucky enough to be trained by dedicated coaches who

have taught me what mental and physical toughness really is. The memories I have will always be with me and have set me up for a great future at Lehigh University.”

McKenzie captured the pole vault crown by clearing 9 feet. Abbondandelo, Condon, Hadley Clayton and Keily Rivas streaked to victory in the 4×800-meter relay in a time of 10 minutes, 27 seconds.

“After five years of being part of the track program it has definitely helped me grow as a person and an athlete,” McKenzie said. “Even though I will be continuing to pole vault and run at Ithaca College, the memories and teammates that I’ve made will be missed. This track team will always be a part of me. We have accomplished so much and have grown

together. I can’t commend everyone enough for motivating and pushing me through each season. They are all amazing people.”

Huntington has enjoyed much success in recent years, including winning league and county track and field championships.

“Being part of the track team has been a highlight of my time at Huntington,” Arenth said. “Not only has it been enjoyable to compete in races, but it’s also been amazing to have such a fun and supportive team and coaches.”

The Blue Devils are coached by Mark Jackson and Eddie Santos. Several of this year’s seniors will be joining recent alums on current college tracks.

“Seeing new and old faces is something that I looked forward to at the start of the season and is something that I’m going to miss,” Mentor said. “As the years went on it was nice to know my performances gradually had a greater impact on the team.”

Colorful posters commemorating the careers of the seniors were affixed to the Blue Devil stadium grandstand façade. The posters included photos of the seniors and heartfelt messages from underclassmen on the squad.

“Throughout my years of track I have made countless memories and created longlasting friendships,” Condon said. “I would have never thought of competing for the track team until a past teammate encouraged me to join. I wish the best of luck to all of the underclassmen in the future.”

Letters to the editor

With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, our editorial staff wanted to take a moment to reflect and give thanks for the powerful mothers and grandmothers who have shaped our lives.

As a pediatrician, I feel compelled to speak out against the proposed cuts to SNAP in the farm bill, H.R.2, which is currently up for a vote in the House.

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

It is the most effective domestic U.S. hunger safety net program and nearly half of its recipients are children. Over one million children in New York state receive benefits from SNAP. Cuts to SNAP will adversely affect children in the nearly 22,000 households with children that participate in the program right

Mother knows best

Rita J. Egan: Both my mother and I often find ourselves feeling as if we’re turning into my grandmother, and many times have uttered the words, “Grandma was right about that.” After my parents separated, I moved in with my maternal grandparents, so it’s no surprise my grandmother had as much of an influence on me as she did on my mother. It’s been said it takes a village to raise a child, and I agree. I am the person I am today thanks to not only my mother but my grandmother, my Aunt Eileen, friends’ mothers and so many who took me under their wings. So on Mother’s Day I say thank you not only to my mom but to all the women who made a difference in my life.

Desirée Keegan: I don’t know where to begin, and it’s hard to find the words to say, but “Thank You” are very small ones for the sacrifices my mother has made every single day.

Her kind support throughout the years, sharing in my triumphs and tears, has never gone unnoticed.

I love the way she stops to listen, even if she doesn’t have the time. Or how she loves to make me laugh with her old jokes or terrible singing, especially when she knows I’m down. Watching a single mother be so selfless is envious, and even if I could be just a piece of what she is, I’d consider myself a success.

Alex Petroski: When I was about 22 I irresponsibly made a huge mistake that cost me a job on my previous career path. The mistake was a result of laziness and immaturity, and I also knew I was comfortable at my retail job, making enough money to feed myself and do things with friends. When I told my mom about the mistake, it was in the context of being comfortable with staying at my retail job anyway, so no big deal. She didn’t take it nearly as lightly as I did. She challenged me to do something that would make her and my dad proud, and that conversation has been the guiding principle of my work life ever since. I can’t speak for her as far as if I’ve succeeded or not yet, but it will never be for a lack of effort. Thanks for knowing when to push me, Mom. Sara-Megan Walsh: It’s said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. This is the second Mother’s Day since my mom moved south to Florida. While I’m not great at making regular phone calls, I miss being able to drop by the house on a Friday night to say hello and ask for your advice while hopefully snagging a free slice of pizza. You provide encouragement when I’m running ragged and gently push me to keep going. I love the homemade sweaters, but they aren’t a substitute for your hugs.

Kyle Barr: Dear Mom, the way I know you love me is because you always worry.

You worry about what I’m going to eat when I get home. You worry about if I’m getting enough sleep, if I take the time to be with friends, if my friends are treating me right, about what I want to do with my life. You worry if I am home too much, you worry if I’m gone too much. You worry about my student loans. You worry about my bank account.

Worry runs like grains of sugar around your mouth and down your cheeks. It’s real, solid, sweet. I see it sparkling in your eyes when you look at me. Distilled, worry becomes pure empathy.

At the beginning you gave me life and made it a part of yours. To worry is to make another person more important than yourself. You made me and in doing so made me a part of you.

I couldn’t properly explain how much I love you. Perhaps you can see it when I worry.

I worry that you don’t think enough about yourself. I worry that I would hurt you if I ever left home. I worry that you worry a little too much. At least please know that I love you because I worry.

SNAP important to children’s health here on Long Island.

SNAP delivers critical support to vulnerable families to ensure that they can put food on the table. Children who live in households that are food insecure are likely to be sick more often, recover from illness more slowly and be hospitalized more frequently. Lack of adequate healthy food can impair a child’s ability to perform well in school and can lead to higher levels of behavioral and emotional problems from preschool to adolescence.

SNAP is reauthorized under

the farm bill, legislation that renews federal agriculture, trade and nutrition programs.

At present, SNAP benefits are not enough to provide funding with the resources to obtain an adequate healthy diet, and they should not be cut further.

No child should have to struggle with hunger and food insecurity in our country. SNAP serves as a critical support for the health and well-being of children, and its funding should not be cut in the farm bill.

Addressing gang violence Dear Director James McHenry, On April 12, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement presented the Fiscal Year 2019 president’s budget request. The testimony included a commitment to open 75 new immigration courtrooms in 2018 to reduce the backlog of pending immigration cases.

As [director of] the Executive Office for Immigration Review, [which] identifies locations for new immigration courts, we respectfully request you place at least one of these new locations on Long Island. According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, Suffolk and Nassau counties rank in the top 10 among all counties in the nation for pending cases before immigration courts, with 23,178 cases as of Dec. 31, 2017.

Suffolk and Nassau counties have absorbed a significant number of unaccompanied alien children with 1,219 being relocated in Nassau County and 1,472 going to sponsors in Suffolk County in 2017.

Pending cases contribute to associated gang violence on Long Island as gang members target youth like UACs. While serving as Suffolk County’s police commissioner, now Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini stated in his testimony to the Committee on Homeland Security, “of a sampling of 143 active gang members, 89 entered the United States illegally and currently do not have legal status (39 of whom are UACs), 48 are of unknown immigration status, and 17 have legal status (temporary or otherwise).” An adequate

expansion of EOIR resources to Long Island would assist local law enforcement’s relationship with ICE to implement enacted immigration laws.

The backlog in immigration courts is a result of years of policy failures under prior administrations. Effective immigration judge teams are necessary to carry out the U.S. Department of Justice’s statutory responsibility to prosecute administrative immigration cases. Suffolk and Nassau counties could efficiently use these resources to address the backlog as well as prioritize incoming cases related to gang violence.

America in the midst of a crisis All structure of acceptable language and behavior within our traditional society is now in transition from logical common sense. Our nation is being directed contrary to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We are presently in great danger by following a progressive path that is leading our nation away from our Constitutional freedoms. To counter this sedition, we must immediately return to the glory of our past. In less than 20 years social and moral standards have changed. Political parties are in chaos, causing a state of utter confusion and disorder endangering our republic.

With this chaotic condition our educational structure is a disaster. Change is altering past values of teaching in reading, writing, English and math.

Many elementary students cannot identify their first president.

Social engineering is in conflict with parents’ moral standards and their authority. Our school values were once recognized far above other nations. This has become the water drip torture of change. There is much to be desired in our left wing professors who are brainwashing our siblings in the philosophy of Karl Marx. Siblings now feel free to destroy school property

given their behavior as freedom of expression. Action required: immediate suspension and parent notification without a financial refund. In retrospect, let us once again return to quality education that gave much to the glory of our nation and our freedoms. On moral values, we are now entering medical procedures that leave doubt in ethical surgery. The ability to alter preordained identity is not choice. It is a mandate of deity.

Red Sox, Yankees fans feel October excitement in May

I

t’s only May and, despite the warm weather, it feels a bit like October around here, at least, if you talk to fans of the Yankees and Red Sox. The two best teams in baseball, as of earlier this week, were preparing o go head-to-head in a three-game series that seemed to have more on the line than a typical series between the heated rivals at this point in spring.

The Red Sox had that incredibly hot start, winning 17 of their first 19 games, tearing up the league anyone who

By Daniel Dunaief and dared to try to compete with them. The Yankees, meanwhile, started slowly, sputtering to a .500 record.

And then the Yankees seemed to have gotten as hot as the weather, scoring runs in the clutch, pitching with confidence and bringing in rookies like Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, who play more like seasoned veterans.

On a recent evening, my wife and I made a quick stop to the grocery store. As we were walking out, a friend saw me in my Yankees sweatshirt. The friend asked if the team pulled out a win, even though they were losing 4-0 in the eighth inning.

As my wife waited patiently, I recounted nearly every at bat that led to another improbable Yankees comeback. A man who worked at the supermarket came over to listen, put up his hand to high-five me and said he had a feeling they might come back.

While the team measures the success of the season by the ability to win the World Series, the fans, particularly during a season with so much early promise, can bask in the excitement of individual games or series.

The first season, as the incredibly long 162 games from March through October is called, can include numerous highlights that allow fans to appreciate the journey, as well as the destination.

Nothing is a given in a game or a season. We attend or watch any game knowing that the walk-off home run the rookie hit could just as easily have been an inning ending double play.

Ultimately, the most important part of the season is the recognition that it is a game. You can see that when the players mob each other at the plate or smile through their interviews with the sideline reporters after a tight contest.

Year after year, all these teams with all their fans hope the season ends with a victory parade. They want to be able to say, “I was there.”

Ultimately, in life, that’s what we’re hoping for. Moments to cheer for friends and family, to celebrate victories and to enjoy these contests.

Indeed, the winners often look back on the moments when nothing came easily, when their team, their family or their opportunity seemed to be so elusive. These are occasions when nothing that seems to go right turns into those where everything goes according to plan. They don’t happen because you’ve got the right fortune cookie, put on the right socks or asked for some deity to help your team beat another team full of equally worthy opponents, whose fans utter the same prayers.

They happen because of the hard work and dedication. They also often happen because people are taking great pride in doing their jobs and being a part of a team.

Right now, it feels like these two blood rivals are well-matched, facing off in a May series that can bring the energy of October. And, hey, if you’re looking to connect with someone, put on a Yankees or Red Sox sweatshirt and head to the supermarket.

And since my office was only some five minutes from the house and three minutes from their school, I felt I could get to them quickly if they needed me. I was able to look in on them in the course of each day. In fact, I had more trouble convincing my mother than my children that it was acceptable to work both inside and outside the home. I just could never understand how all three unfailingly picked friends who lived on the farthest ends of the school district and had to be driven back and forth. That and the constant car pooling for games and music lessons made me grateful that I had learned to drive — not a typical skill among my urban classmates when I was growing up.

I weathered their teenage years as best I could, sometimes marveling that only my children could make me scream (and my mother). At the same time, my husband and I vicariously enjoyed the children’s various successes: academic, musical and athletic. They were

blossoming into young adults and we were regularly irritated by them and immensely proud of them.

As the children reached their later teenage years, the family dynamic shifted. My husband was terminally ill, and the children were forced to deal with death. My mother and my father had both passed on by then, and the boys had been deeply touched by their loss, but the death of a parent at a far younger age than expected for either their father or themselves struck me as a cruel trick. Somehow we had not lived up to our part of the parenting contract.

I guess that was when my children started to become my friends. It probably would have happened around that age anyway, but we became allies in the face of adversity. And then life’s wonderful joys unfurled. ... They graduated, got jobs, found their loved ones and eventually made me a grandmother.

That’s a club one can’t apply to oneself, but having arrived there, I can endlessly sing its praises.

Bottom line: How ultimately satisfying it is for me to be a mom.

rom the time I was a young girl, I wanted to be a mother.

The urge to hold and to love a baby, my baby, was a conscious one. I also had professional ambitions, so in those days, before women expected to be able to do it all, there was a bit of a conflict in my head. Curiously, while I don’t remember telling anyone about my maternal urges, I did mention it on my first date to the man I eventually married. He told me that he too

When I did have my first child, I was quietly terrified. I was the caboose child in my parents’ families, meaning that my parents were older, and everyone in my generation was already born before I came on the scene. There were no babies for me

to practice on, I had never given a baby a bottle nor changed a diaper, and I was afraid I was inadvertently going to do some terrible harm to a helpless infant. It wasn’t until the baby’s one-month checkup, when the pediatrician exalted about how his development — size and weight — were “off the charts,” that I began to relax and believe the baby would survive my ignorance.

After that the parenting urge was so fulfilling that we did it twice more in record time. Judging from my friends’ tales of their children, we had it easy with three boys. They were exceedingly energetic but never moody, didn’t hold a grudge for more than three minutes, weren’t particular about what clothes they wore and could be entertained with a generous supply of miniature trucks on rainy, “indoor” days or any ball game on “outside” days. Baseball on our dead end street was their favorite, and I became a pretty good pitcher, if I do say so myself.

They didn’t much like it when I started the first newspaper and was away from the house a great deal.
