Lifelong H’ton resident, councilwoman wants to lead community

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Huntington Town Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) is determined to serve her community no matter what. After the lifelong Huntington resident was diagnosed with breast cancer in Jan. 2016 — the beginning of her second year on the board — she spent the better part of nine months in and out of the doctor’s office, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries. Yet she didn’t miss a single board meeting.

“I came in with my hat, I was bald, but I was there because the residents elected me to do a job — I’m efficient,” Edwards, who is now cancer-free, said with a smile.

That efficiency, along with a list of initiatives to better her community, has put the restless 55-year-old on track for town supervisor.

On Monday, May 1, Edwards sat down for an interview, at Panera Bread on Main Street in Huntington, to discuss her achievements so far on the town board, her upbringing, and campaign for supervisor.

Born in Huntington Hospital and raised by a narcotics detective, her father, and a civil activist, her mother, Edwards married her high school sweetheart at 17. She and her husband live in Dix Hills and have three

children, and two grandchildren.

Edwards was elected to the town board in 2014, after serving 10 years on the Elwood board of education. She previously served on the board of directors of the Long Island Association and worked for 37 years at Verizon, starting as an operator and climbing the ladder to regional president of network operations.

As councilwoman, Edwards worked alongside fellow councilwoman Susan Berland (D) to expand affordable housing legislation for millennials and first-time home buyers to more easily live downtown and has been a strong advocate for youthoriented programs that tackle drug awareness, encouraging the town’s partnerships with its school districts and churches to confront Long Island’s heroin and opioid epidemic.

She led the rewriting of the town’s ethics code to make it more transparent for residents. “The residents are our customers and the more I can do to bring government to the people the better it is for a more open government,” she said. She and the board are currently working on a resolution to modify registrations for bow hunting, which has long been a safety concern among residents in Asharoken and Eaton’s Neck.

She also spearheaded the creation of the Huntington Opportunity Resource Center, a program that offers assistance with resume preparation, job searches, exploration of career options and access to job training for unemployed and underemployed residents, many of whom are veterans.

“Tracey has always made the veterans

Asharoken incumbents look to serve another term

By Victoria Espinoza Victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Village of Asharoken government is looking to stay the course, as two incumbents on the village board are running for another term to serve their community.

Deputy Mayor Mary (Pam) Pierce and Trustee Ian Jablonski announced this week they will be running for re-election in the Asharoken village election June 20, seeking a fourth and third term, respectively.

Both are members of the Asharoken Integrity Party.

Pierce, a 32-year Asharoken resident, is a retired business executive and owner and has served as deputy mayor for five years. She was the coordinator on the Village Response for the ASDRP beach project and oversaw the repair of the Sound-side groins at both the eastern and western ends and the National Grid sand placement in the fall of last year.

“We’ve been doing a lot and it’s been very rewarding serving the community,” Pierce said in a phone interview. “This is a great little community, and it’s great to get as many projects done as we can for the future of our village.”

Jablonski, a 16-year Asharoken resident, is a director in the information technology department of Northwell Health.

He managed the widening of the shoulder on Asharoken Avenue across from the seawall, the repair of a retaining wall north-

west of that area and has kept the board apprised of deer, tick and hunting information during his tenure. In the past two

years residents have been divided on how to handle the overpopulation of deer in the area, and the resolution of allowing bow hunting for deer.

During the last five years, the pair said the Asharoken administration has concentrated on four main areas: taxes, infrastructure, grant funding and intermunicipal cooperation/planning.

In each of the last five years the village has remained below the New York Statemandated 2 percent tax levy increase cap.

The recently adopted 2017-2018 budget has a 0 percent increase for the second year in a row. The five-year average tax change is the lowest it has been since 2002, at 1.4 percent. In addition, the New York State comptroller has conducted financial stress tests for local governments in the last four years, and Asharoken received the best evaluation possible for all three tests.

Another project that the pair was proud to have played a role in accomplishing was the construction of the new village hall, which was achieved entirely through resident donations. The current administration has also worked on repaving and repairing streets, repairing parts of the seawall and other parts of the beach. The village has also added four part-time police officers

Group claims Congressman Suozzi not keeping promise H’ton resident critical of U.S representative’s stance on single-payer health care

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com The congressman from New York’s 3rd Congressional District who is only months into his first term is already being accused of breaking a promise by a group of his constituents who have supported him in the past.

As far as the Long Island Activists are concerned, U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) has not fulfilled his promise to support a single-payer health care system for New York residents.

The Huntington-based group is disappointed Suozzi has not moved to be a cosponsor for H.R.676, otherwise known as the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act. The bill would provide coverage for primary care and prevention, dietary and nutritional therapies, prescription drugs, emergency care, long-term care, mental health services, dental services, vision care and more. It was drafted and introduced to the House by U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) Jan. 24, and currently has 108 co-sponsors, including several other congressional Democrats from New York.

In January the Long Island Activists traveled to Suozzi’s office in Huntington to ask him to sign a single-payer pledge, which acknowledged health care is a human right and a single-payer system is “the only way to ensure that every single person in the United States has access to quality and affordable health insurance.”

The pledge also included a vow to personally sponsor a single-payer bill in Congress, as soon as the Democratic party retakes a majority in the House of Representatives.

Although the Democratic party remains the minority in the House, the organization still believes Suozzi has broken that contract by not supporting the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act. “On numerous occasions you have claimed support for the concept of a singlepayer system,” Ron Widelec, a member of the group said in an open letter to Suozzi.

Trump’s tax reform would create 10 percent, 25 percent and 35 percent tax brackets to categorize all Americans, maintain mortgage interest and charitable tax deductions, and eliminate the 3.8 percent tax instituted by former President Barack Obama (D) on

Police work to catch trio connected to multiple crimes in Huntington Station

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Suffolk County Police and Nassau County Police arrested three people May 1 in connection with knifepoint robberies that have occurred in both counties since February.

Police said a man armed with a knife entered Carvel, located on New York Avenue in Huntington Station, and demanded money last night at approximately 9:40 p.m. The employee complied. The man and two other people who assisted him were arrested outside the store by Nassau County Police Robbery Squad and Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit who were conducting a joint investigation. Shane Cashmore, 30, Paul Drab, 26, of Levittown, and Julianna Pantaleone, 31, of Levittown, were arrested and charged with first-degree robbery for the Carvel incident.

Cashmore has been identified as the knifepoint robber in 17 additional robberies in Suffolk and Nassau counties. He has been charged in Suffolk County with firstdegree robberies for the following crimes: •The Barn, located on Hawkins Ave., Lake Ronkonkoma, April 30

Huntington man killed working under vehicle

Timoteo Apazaari was under a box truck making repairs on the exhaust sys-

tem when the vehicle rolled and struck him in the parking lot of Baker’s Antiques and Collectibles, located on Sunrise Highway, at approximately 2:10 p.m.

Apazaari, 51, of Huntington, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

In the AutoZone parking lot on New York Avenue in Huntington Station April 9, a 52-year-old woman from Huntington Station struck a parked and unoccupied 2012 Honda Civic with her 2006 Nissan Murano and fled at around 10:10 a.m., police said. She was arrested May 1 and charged with leaving the scene of an accident when property damage results.

On April 23 at around 2 p.m., a 49-yearold man from Melville stole an Apple iPhone 6 from a Best Buy on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station, according to police. He was arrested May 1 and charged with petit larceny.

A 37-year-old woman from Huntington was pulled over May 1 at around 10:30 p.m. for recklessly driving an unregistered 2001 Toyota sedan north on West Hills Road in Huntington, police said. She was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while impaired.

Stealing some dough

Police said a 25-year-old man from Brentwood stole cash from Bertucci’s Italian Restaurant on Walt Whitman Road in Melville April 14 at around 6:45 p.m. He was arrested April 30 and charged with petit larceny.

Dangerous detour

At around 3:50 a.m. April 29, a 23-yearold woman from West Babylon was speeding while driving a 2016 Jeep north on New York Avenue, near East Carver Street, in Huntington, according to police.

She crossed over double yellow lines into traffic going south, police said. She was arrested and charged with first-offense driving while impaired.

North Shore rally opposing Trump climate policies draws crowd

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Under sunny skies on a warm spring day, hundreds gathered at the corner of Nesconset Highway and Patchogue Road in Port Jefferson Station April 29 to make their voices heard in opposition of policies and promises from President Donald Trump (R) that reversed environmental protections.

On March 28, Trump signed an executive order to rescind actions taken by the Democratic Obama administration that sought to establish a climate action plan and reduce methane emissions. It also established a review to determine if the Clean Power Plan, another Obama administration policy designed to reduced carbon pollution from power plants, should remain in place. Trump’s budget blueprint for the 2017-18 fiscal year released in March included significant cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, and he has also publicly stated his intention to consider withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, a United Nations convention on climate change.

He has said the goal in rolling back measures designed to protect the environment is to relieve the financial burden the measures create for American businesses.

The North Country Peace Group and Long Island Rising, two activist groups which have been quick to break out the poster board and markers to congregate and send a message to Trump and politicians who support his policies, organized a sister march of the People’s Climate March in Washington, D.C. The Port Jefferson Station march saw several hundred protesters, armed with signs and singing chants, line the streets to voice their opinions.

“I knew that the people’s climate march was happening and I wanted us to have a local event for Long Island, for Suffolk County,” Rosemary Maffei, a member of both activist groups and an organizer of the Port Jeff Sta-

tion march said in an interview during the event. “The reasons being, of course, I believe in climate change. I believe it’s happening and unfortunately we have someone in the White House right now who doesn’t believe in it. I think it’s important for us to come out in numbers and to show our representatives that this is an important topic for us, and that we want them to represent us and how we want them to vote.”

A press release advertising the event also stated the two groups’ intentions.

“The rally will be an event for our community to come together and voice our concerns about the policies this administration is enacting which will have devastating effects on our planet,” the statement said. “We rally for our planet because if we don’t stop the insanity who will?”

Other residents from the North Shore shed light on their reasons for attending.

“We protect ourselves in all sorts of ways for the future, and here we are allowing the future of our children and grandchildren to be so jeopardized,” John Robinson from Setauket said.

A Port Jefferson resident shared Robinson’s concerns.

“He’s undoing incredibly important legislation that was designed to save the environment,” Merle Neidell said of the president.

The New York State Assembly passed a package of bills April 24 ahead of Earth Day including a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) to establish a constitutional right to clean air, clean water and a healthful environment. Another bill requires crude oil storage facilities to demonstrate financial security to meet responsibilities associated with a possible spill or disaster.

“This is the kind of environmental leadership New Yorkers want to see more of,” Peter Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates of New York said in a statement.

Suffolk makes grants available to upgrade outdated septic systems

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com For a few hundred dollars annually, Suffolk County residents now have the option to take a step to improve the quality of Long Island waters.

County Executive Steve Bellone (D) urged homeowners at a town hall meeting at Port Jefferson Village Center April 27 to get on board with a new grant and loan program that will help make the installation of stateof-the-art, nitrogen-reducing septic systems more affordable.

Bellone said the new systems, which would replace the 360,000 outdated and environmentally harmful septic tanks and leaching systems installed in a majority of homes across the county, are the next step in a years-long initiative to reclaim Long Island’s water.

“Water quality is everything to us here — it’s our quality of life, our heritage, our economy, tourism economy, our recreation and what we drink,” Bellone told a roomful of residents in Port Jefferson. “We need to retrofit those homes to protect our environment and reverse decades of water quality

If elected supervisor, Edwards said she wants to complete revitalization efforts started in Huntington Station, which includes the construction of veteran’s housing, art space, stores, sidewalks and a parking garage, while working with law enforcement to stamp out crime.

“Huntington Station is the entrance into the village and we need to make sure there is a look and feel all the way down on New York Avenue,” she said. “I saw what Huntington Station used to be with businesses along New York Avenue that were thriving. Unfortunately, that turned into parking lots. Paved parking lots for commuter parking is not what our community is all about.”

She said she also wants to continue to hold the line on taxes under the town’s cap, building on the foundation of financial stability laid by current Supervisor Frank Petrone (D).

Moving forward, she hopes to expand the town’s environmental initiatives, focusing specifically on solar and sustainability. She’s a lead sponsor on the county’s Focused Clean Water resolution that bans formaldehyde in marine water tanks.

“She voted not in line with her party but in line with what’s right for the community and the wishes of our civic association,” Taff said. “[In doing so], she showed great concern for the environment and what will become a very high traffic area, and protection of park land.

We admire her for that.”

Edwards graduated from ElwoodJohn Glenn High School in 1978 at just 16, doubling up on the essential courses and eliminating the rest so she could more quickly begin her career — she initially had her heart set on joining the police force but her father steered her away from that idea. She quickly got a job at New York Telephone, which later became Verizon, and felt at home.

But she said she feels most at home helping the people of Huntington.

“When people call me and say ‘I hate to bother you with this...’ I’m very quick to tell them, ‘listen, I work for you... when you’re calling me, don’t apologize.

That’s what I’m supposed to be doing, working on your behalf,’” she said. “This town is important to me and I want to make sure I do everything I can for it.”

ministered by the nonprofit Community Development Corporation of Long Island, offer homeowners low-cost financing for up to $10,000.

To cover the $17, 850 total cost of installation, eligible homeowners would be given an $11,000 grant — $10,000 for the installation of the individual alternative on-site wastewater treatment systems and $1,000 for a pressurized shallow drain field. Homeowners would pay the balance with a 15-year, fixed 3 percent loan.

The program primarily targets singlefamily, owner-occupied residences served by a septic system or cesspool. It excludes employees of the county, including elected officials or officeholders.

Charlie McAteer, a retired Port Jefferson Station resident and a member of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association, said his home’s septic system is among the 360,000 that are a few decades old now. He said he and his wife showed up to the town hall meeting to gain more information on the grant program.

“We want to investigate it a bit more — see if it’s viable and economically feasible,” McAteer said. “We just have to do some

numbers-crunching and see if it makes sense in our particular parcel and then see if we would qualify.”

Ed Bram, from Port Jefferson, expressed concerns the county isn’t reaching out to the right group of people, as many in the room were already environmentally aware.

“We all think it’s a wonderful idea...so it’s sort of like preaching to the choir,” Bram said. “The general public out there has a different nature of thinking. I think the county is trying their best at doing something for the environment but going about it the wrong way.”

It’s a legitimate concern, Scully responded.

“There’s an education piece to this that people need to come to grips with,” Scully said. “It’s important for people to speak up.”

The County Executive hopes the project can get underway July 1, with 400 homeowners to be selected to receive funding in the first two years of the program.

Local leaders have voiced concern since last month about the possibility of homeowners losing deductions.

“I think it would have a disproportionate impact on Long Islanders,” Suffolk County Leg. William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said in a phone interview.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t pass. It threatens the American dream.”

The Long Island Association Research Institute did a study on the effects eliminating deductions might have and said it could cost Long Islander’s $4.4 billion. In a 2013 report, it found Long Island sends the federal government $23.1 billion more than it receives back in programs and services from the government, so taxpayers in all brackets would be impacted by cuts to deductions. The study said the middle class would be hit especially hard with tax increases, anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 annually, and $3 billion would be taken away from the regional economy.

“If these proposals are given more structure and momentum it would be devastating for Long Island,” Matt Cohen, vice president of government affairs and communications for the LIA said in a phone interview.

Pierce and Jablonksi said in a joint statement they’ve enjoyed the collaborative efforts that make Asharoken so successful.

“It has been very rewarding working with the wonderful team we have-our fellow trustees and the mayor, the village employees and the many volunteers and residents who give so much to our beautiful village,” they said. “While much has been accomplished in the past five years, there are still important challenges and issues ahead. Willett coaches both fighters and had great faith in them before they met their opponents in the ring. He met Misa a couple of years ago in the world of mixed martial arts.

“He transitioned very well because he has an open mind,” the coach said. “I always tell everyone I gave him a map, and he followed it to the ‘t.’ So, it’s why he’s at where he is now.

It’s kind of unheard of for someone who was in mixed martial arts to go into open class, because open class is semi-pro.”

On the night of April 21 Calvin was unanimously declared the 152-pound open title champion in the welterweight division. The next day Misa lost his match in the 178-pound open title bout. Calvin said making it to the finals, for a new boxer like Misa, is a great achievement in itself.

Cooper was extremely proud of Calvin after the fight, and said the boxer dominated his opponent, Michael Hughes, a 2012 Golden Gloves champion, with his in-and-out movements and speed and power in the three, three-minute rounds.

“He did all the things we’ve been working on, and it really seemed in that final fight that a lot of things came together,” Cooper said.

“He put it all together. He was in and out, he was moving. It was fantastic.”

He was excited to see his business partner and teammate win after years of hard work.

For amateur boxers, making it to the finals of the Daily News Golden Gloves tournament is a huge achievement. Recently fighters from Port Jefferson Station’s Royals Boxing Gym had their chance for glory in the ring, and one of them brought home the gold.

Two days before the fights the energy was high and the excitement was palpable at the gym as co-owner Michael Calvin of Setauket was balancing work and training to compete in the welterweight finals of the tournament at Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom April 21. Golden Gloves finalist and Stony Brook resident Michael Misa was also at the gym that night. He was sparring in preparation for his light heavyweight match that was held at the Aviator Sports and Event Center in Brooklyn April 22.

Calvin, 26, a Ward Melville graduate, made it to the semifinals in 2013 but had to bow out due to an injury. He was looking forward to fighting in the finals this year.

“It’s a surreal feeling,” Calvin said. “I guess it will sink in more when the experience is over. Right now, I am so immersed in the circumstances.”

Misa, 26, was also excited and said he was preparing to face his competitor Matt Klingerman with his trainer Adam Willett.

“It’s always a challenge, the finals,” Misa said. “I know my opponent. He has really good cardio. He always comes forward. We’re just working on using range and everything we worked on in the gym.”

Misa, who just started boxing last year, said this would actually be his third fight in the tournament, as opposed to his fourth like others in the Golden Gloves, because his opponent didn’t show up for the semifinal fight.

“It was kind of bittersweet,” he said. “You know it’s nice to get into the finals but I really wanted to earn my way into the finals. We worked really hard on it.”

Calvin said the two were training at least 20 hours a week in the lead-up to the tournament. Hard work is nothing new to them.

Besides running Royals Boxing Gym with his partner, Calvin is a personal trainer at Remedy Gym in Setauket and works with Giant Step Services, which educates and assists adults with developmental disabilities.

Calvin said he has been involved with boxing since he discovered it at the age of 16 when he saw children competing outside of the Boys & Girls Club of Suffolk County. He said working with boxers seven days a week, in addition to training keeps, him in top form.

“My biggest weapon is this constant reinforcement of my fundamentals — it has gotten me exponentially better,” he said.

Misa, who grew up in Mount Sinai and is a liberal arts student at Suffolk County Community College, said years ago he became involved in jiujitsu and mixed martial arts at a competitive level. It was after a four-year stint in the Navy that he first tried his hand at boxing, even though he always followed it as a kid. He said he believes his training in the martial arts helps him when it comes to boxing. Misa also played hockey growing up but he said he prefers competing on his own like he does in boxing.

“It’s an individual sport so it’s more on you,” Misa said. “Obviously you have your coaches and teammates that are pushing you in the gym, but at the end of the day, it’s only you and the other guy in the ring.”

Besides physical dedication, the sport takes a strong mental attitude.

“It takes a lot of mental preparation,” Calvin said. “I stay pretty calm. I never really get nervous. I’m not nervous until the walk to the ring, and that walk to the ring is the most heart-wrenching thing. It’s terrifying. Everything in you is telling you to turn around and walk away because you know there’s a 100 percent chance you’re going to get hit, but all your training and everything and your ego tells you to keep trucking forward.”

As for punches, Calvin said when he’s fighting, he doesn’t register them coming.

“When you’re in the ring everything happens so fast,” he said. “It’s all reactive. You don’t have time to process anything in the ring at all.

You have to react … all a result of training.”

Before the match, Thomas Cooper, coowner of Royals who also trains Calvin, was optimistic about the fight and said that the boxer is a “special talent in the sport” and felt he was the top fighter in the competition.

“He has speed and power and that’s an excellent combination to have in boxing,” Cooper said. “He has fast feet, fast hands. He always listens to what you have to tell him.

Congressman Lee Zeldin votes the party line

County and town taking steps to monitor water quality Last week Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) was in Port Jefferson, for the first of three scheduled town hall meetings to inform residents about a proposed septic improvement program.

If passed, the program would allow 400 Suffolk County homeowners the opportunity to receive grants and low-cost loans for the replacement of wastewater treatment systems in their homes. The systems cost between $14,500 and $17,500 in total, and monies made available by the program would cover up to $11,000.

Nitrogen from outdated septic systems and cesspools has been wreaking havoc on Long Island’s waters for years. It has done damage to both the quality of our waters and the inhabitants. We commend the county executive for bringing forward this plan, which would help improve our environment.

In addition, Brookhaven’s Town Board passed an amendment last week to their 2016 nitrogen protection zone law, which allows the board to adjust the former limit of 19 milligrams of nitrogen per liter of water from septic systems or cesspools immediately upon the release of new technology that makes lower standards possible.

Our editorial staff is thrilled to see two municipalities taking the initiative to proactively monitor the quality of our waters in the hopes of reversing some disturbing recent trends. We hope the legislature will approve Bellone’s program, and when the time comes, we encourage homeowners to apply for the grants. The second informational town hall will be held May 8 at the Huntington Public Library’s main branch at 7 p.m., and the third will be at the Middle Country Library’s Centereach branch May 12 at 7:30 p.m.

A letter appears in The Times of Smithtown, praising U.S. Rep. Zeldin for going against party lines in one recent vote. In the same edition, an editorial praises the town halls Zeldin finally held on April 23 as a “great step.”

Before we hire the brass band and break out the champagne, a few facts are in order. I have been tracking Zeldin’s votes in Congress and the vote on SJ Res 34 was his one and only vote in this session of Congress against the party line. As another article in the same edition points out, FiveThirtyEight gives Zeldin a 96 percent score on how often he votes in line with Trump.

Zeldin voted along party lines for HR 5, a bill hamstringing federal rulemaking, called

by Consumers Union a “dangerous proposal” which “would do severe damage to protections consumers depend on for health, safety, and honest treatment.” He voted along party lines in favor

of HR 78 handcuffing the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a gift to Wall Street. He voted the party line for HJ Res 69, which allows the killing in Alaska national wildlife refuges of hibernating bear cubs and wolf pups in their dens. He voted the party line for HJ Res 83, which repeals the OSHA rule requiring employers to maintain accurate records of serious work-related injuries and illnesses. He voted the party line in favor of HR 985, another gift to Wall Street, making it virtually impossible to bring class action lawsuits, overturning centuries of settled American law. This bill was opposed by the AFL-CIO and Consumers Union. I could give many more examples of Zeldin voting the party line on measures that do nothing to improve life for Long Islanders.

As for the town hall meetings, certainly showing up to face his constituents after months of resistance is better

than continued stonewalling.

However, the main event at Riverhead was not a true giveand-take. Constituents were not allowed to ask questions directly.

Instead they had to submit questions in advance, which were then chosen and paraphrased (not read) to Zeldin by a local GOP official. No follow-ups were allowed, permitting Zeldin to wander off-topic and give rehearsed, generalized responses.

One swallow does not a summer make, nor does a single vote in Congress make Zeldin an independent. He remains very much a straight party man. If he was so independent, why would he vote the party line in favor of measures allowing cruelty to animals in Alaska or dumping toxic waste into streams in West Virginia?

How can these measures possibly help Long Islanders?

School district warns parents about Netflix show The support staff at Port Jefferson School District would like to make you aware of the recent release of the Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why” based on a 2007 young adult novel. The content of this series raises serious concerns, portrays traumatic matters and romanticizes suicide. While this is a TV drama and not real life, the subject matters are in fact relevant and real to our youth. The series graphically depicts a suicide death and numerous difficult topics such as bullying, rape, drunk driving, drug use, alcoholism, sexual assault and the consequences of being a bystander. The scenes throughout each episode may be extremely difficult for the teenage mind to watch and process in an appropriate manner without the support of a trusted adult.

We do not recommend that vulnerable youth, especially those who have experienced a degree of suicidal ideation, view this series. The content can be triggering and may lead impressionable viewers to idealize the choices made by characters in the story. The main character places blame on others for her suicide. Suicide is never the fault of survivors and there are resources and support groups for suicide loss survivors. It is

recommended that if your child has viewed or is planning to view this series, engaging them in thoughtful discussions would assist in helping them to process the intense issues. This also allows the message to be reinforced that suicide is not a solution to problems and that there are resources available.

Please find out if your child has read the book, or watched or heard of the series. If they have, see some suggestions below for engaging them in thoughtful conversations.

Remind your child that there is no problem too great to be handled. Have an open and honest conversation about emotional issues and suicide. Talking about these issues with your child does not put them at an increased risk; rather it assures them of your love and support.

It is important to express to your child that there is no single cause

of suicide. Suicide is not a common response to life’s challenges. Most individuals struggling with some of the matters addressed in the book/ series do seek support by reaching out and talking to a friend, family member, counselor, etc. Suicide affects everyone and everyone can do something to help.

The character in the series was experiencing untreated mental health concerns. It is important to note that there are many treatment options available.

Remind your child that there is always someone who will listen.

If your child hears, sees or feels anything in this regard, ask them to reach out to someone.

If you yourself are concerned about someone, don’t hesitate to ask them about it or tell someone who can help.

OpiniOn Cursing our self-inflicted wounds

T

here’s a part of us that wants to shed the limitations of civilization. What difference do all those arbitrary lines in society make anyway?

Say, for example, we’re standing in a grocery store and the line isn’t moving quickly enough. Then again, what line could possibly move at a speed we’d find acceptable? We look at our phones to distract us.

The phone doesn’t offer much relief, as our boss has sent us an instant message that reads, “If

you don’t bring those cupcakes back within three minutes, you will be on cupcake duty for the next six months.”

It’s our fault. We saw that lane six was probably longer than lane seven, but we picked six because we saw a headline in a magazine about Julia Roberts and we wanted to read the other headlines in a magazine that was out of stock in lane seven.

Lane six is at a complete stop as the cashier waits for the override.

“Come on!” we want to scream.

“We gotta deliver these cupcakes before we lose our job!”

But we don’t scream any curse words, despite an impulse that is working its way up our spinal column. Another urge hits us. We want to jump on the conveyor belt and dance to “Cotton Eye Joe,” while kicking away the other groceries.

But we don’t do that, either.

We hold back because everyone has a camera, and we don’t want to be the supermarket dancer on YouTube forever.

We consider convincing ourselves that our venting might become a way to contribute to society. Maybe other people waiting in line somewhere can laugh at us, as we act out their frustration fantasies.

But, no, we’d have a hard time going to PTA meetings or running for office if our opponent could show we didn’t have the temperament to be a leader.

We keep our composure. It’s just cupcakes, right? Then again, we still have to do our work and this means we’ll be home later than we wanted and we won’t get a parking spot near the gym tonight, which means we might have to walk an extra quarter of a mile before we run 6 miles. It’s so unfair!

Curses are echoing around our brain. We grind our teeth, tap our feet, shake our head slowly and blow our bangs off our overheated and thickly lined forehead.

We hear the words, “Come on, come on, come on,” in our head, but no one else seems to care about our agony. Oh, great, now we have to

go to the bathroom, which will be difficult because as soon as we get back to the office we are serving the cupcakes at the party.

Don’t think about the need for the toilet. Oh, right, sure, that’s worked so well in the past. Why hadn’t we thought about that around, say, tax season? Sure, if you don’t think about it, taxes will just go away.

Then the curse words slipped out. We shouted them. We look around, wondering if we’ve damaged our reputation. This can be the smallest town on the planet. No one is holding a cellphone in our direction. No one seems to be waiting for us to do it again. Everyone does, however, take a step back from us.

We breathe a sigh of relief until it hits us: Two rows away is an overheated mother with three children holding onto her shopping cart. One of them — he looks like he’s about 6 years old — is staring at us without blinking. Maybe crossing that line was a mistake, as shame has replaced anger.

And why? Because the nature of shopping has changed.

Catalogs presaged the change many years ago. Busy residents could scan catalogs from different stores, pick out the items they needed or thought they needed, call a store’s 800 number and receive delivery a few days later. It wasn’t necessary to bestir oneself from the living room sofa and go out to see the product. If, when it arrived, it didn’t fit or wasn’t the right color, we could send it back, often postage paid. I used to joke that they should put a try-on room in the post office.

Then came the internet, and more specifically, Amazon. No longer do we have the inconvenience of searching through multiple catalogues. We can now indicate what we want and select from among many manufacturers the precise item we seek. Further, that item may appear at our door within 24 hours, or even the same afternoon for a slightly higher fee. Amazon has become the entire world’s bazaar.

Sometimes people venture out to a

store to get a three-dimensional look at the desired goods. Yet often they then retreat to their cellphones and order the same item for less money over the internet. E-commerce is king.

This sea change in shopping has been happening gradually but now is moving at an accelerating pace. At least that is what a recent article, “Is American Retail at a Historic Tipping Point?”

by Michael Corkery, in The New York Times tells us: “Between 2010 and 2014, e-commerce grew by an average of $30 billion annually. Over the past three years, average annual growth has increased to $40 billion.” The Times article continues, “This transformation is hollowing out suburban shopping malls, bankrupting longtime brands and leading to staggering job losses.” It has also shaken the money tree of daily and weekly newspapers, as evidenced by the fewer number of pages and hence news stories that newspapers can afford to publish. But we papers are only collateral damage.

“More workers in general merchandise stores have been laid off since October, about 89,000 Americans.

That is more than all of the people employed in the United States coal

industry, which President Trump championed during the campaign as a prime example of the workers who have been left behind in the economic recovery,” according to The Times.

One out of 10 people works in retail, and the consequences of their being unemployed are as upending for society as the loss of jobs for manufacturing workers has been.

We are talking about the disappearing middle class here, folks. The small-store owners and their workers are losing their livelihoods. Shopping malls, with the exception of a luxurious few, are emptying out, and their sales staffs are being laid off. The great irony of Amazon now experimenting with brick-and-mortar stores will hardly replace the thousands of workers cut loose, and robots largely operate their fulfillment centers in huge warehouses.

There is a brilliant little business book by Spencer Johnson called, “Who Moved My Cheese?” which summarizes the current condition in first-grader detail. Retail life as we knew it, in this case the old cheese, is elsewhere. To survive in business now requires innovation, retraining and finding the location of new cheese.

Choppy waters in retail sea change

here was confirmation for what I have been saying over the past couple of years. Shopping has changed. Now I have never been a particularly astute shopper. When I need something, I go into the closest appropriate store and buy the item. The only time I enjoy shopping, for the most part, is when I am on vacation and feel I have the leisure to browse. That way I learn about the place I am visiting and also perhaps see unusual products that may tempt me.
