Huntington residents are being asked to search their cabinets and get rid of unused prescription drugs this Saturday.

Huntington Hospital is one of nine Northwell Health facilities that will be participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day April 28.

The hospital will put out receptacles where people can drop off unused or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is organized with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The health care provider collected more than 300 pounds of unused prescription drugs during a similar event held last October.

“It was so gratifying to see the large quantity of unneeded and expired drugs

brought to Northwell Health facilities last drug take back day in October,” said Peg Butler, Northwell Health’s assistant vice president of marketing and external relations. “We want to do everything we can to keep these drugs from falling into the wrong hands.”

Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experience with opiates or other drugs, according to the health care facility.

There were 2,726 deaths related to opioids in the state in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. Of those 2,726 deaths, more than 400 occurred on Long Island.

Steve Stern takes 10th Assembly seat in historic win First time in more than 30 years that voters choose a Democrat candidate as their representative Former Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (D-Dix Hills) said he knew his neighbors best and his confidence was backed up when the ballots were counted Tuesday night.

Stern became the first Democrat elected to represent the 10th Assembly District in New York State Assembly in more than 30 years by defeating Republican candidate Janet Smitelli, 5,748 to 3,969 votes, in the April 24 special election.

“I look forward to being a strong voice for Long Island,” he said “That’s exactly what’s needed in New York State Assembly.”

Stern received approximately 59 percent of the ballots cast, according to the unofficial results posted by Suffolk County Board of Elections. He ran on the Democrat, Working Families, Independence, Women’s Equality and Reform lines.

The newly elected assemblyman called it a “historic win” indicative of the larger political dialogue happening across the country.

“So many people in our community believe that the federal government is going in a dangerous direction,” Stern said. “If Washington is not going to address the issues and what’s going on, we have a responsibility to do it up in Albany.”

Steve Stern is the first Democrat to be elected to represent the 10th Assembly District in more than 30 years.

Stern will be sworn in April 30 to take over the seat vacated by Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R). The new state assemblyman thanked his campaign volunteers and said Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) had called to offer his congratulations.

The state’s 10th Assembly District has been represented by Republicans since the early 1980s. The longest-serving assemblyman was Huntington Station resident Jim

Conte (R) who held the office from 1988 until his death in October 2012. Lupinacci, who worked for Conte, then won the seat in a 2012 special election.

“I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to my opponent Steve Stern upon his victory,” Smitelli posted April 24 on Facebook.

“During this campaign we discussed the issues and got the community engaged. I wish him the best of luck.”

Stern previously said if elected he intended to continue local efforts but on a much larger scale, such as combating gang activity, which he has done by helping to get county funding for automatic license plate readers that target criminals. He’s also passionate about protecting the environment and the area’s water quality, having co-sponsored legislation identifying key areas of importance when it comes to developing sewer infrastructure. Stern said this legislation plays a key to downtown revitalization of Huntington Station. He said he’s a strong supporter of term limits and bipartisanship.

His first action upon being elected, in keeping with a personal tradition started during his days in county Legislature, Stern said, was driving around town starting to pull up his campaign signs.

How can I protect myself from getting a disease?

A. The medical term for this concept is “Primary Prevention”. It is the core goal of a patient’s annual wellness visit. At an annual wellness visit, we can screen for diseases that a patient is not even aware of because they are experiencing no discomfort and have no present complaints.

Annual wellness visits provide the potential of early intervention before a disease process causes unnecessary damage and can greatly increase and improve the success of available treatment options. Most importantly, annual wellness visits provide a setting for preventative medicine. The risk of many of the most serious diseases that commonly afflict people can largely be avoided by changes in behavior and habits.

How can I stop from my disease from getting worse?

A. If you are already diagnosed with a disease, and are experiencing symptoms, you may feel overwhelmed, but it is important not to lose sight of how powerful your response to any disease can be. Your primary care physician strives to improve your overall health and can help you along the way to minimize symptoms on your journey to recovery. Even serious ailments such as diabetically induced strokes can be greatly mitigated by taking proactive interventions years ahead of time, and working with your physician to fine tune your medication regimen. The primary care physician can often times recognize overlapping complaints and understand is the combination of symptoms, signaling a change in the disease progression and consequently prescribe appropriate remedial treatment.

This concept is referred to as “Secondary Prevention” and the lessening of the functional impact of any disease is referred to as “Tertiary Prevention”.

When can diet and exercise decrease the chances for getting a heart attack or stroke?

A. The potential for prevention starts in the months and years before a heart attack or stroke actually occurs.

Research has identified statistically reliable parameters that are indicative of increasing and decreasing dangerous health risks. For instance, lifestyle modifications aimed at improving your diet and increasing the amount of exercise you do has been shown to offer the greatest benefits when started as early as possible. Your primary care physician’s treatment protocol is informed by these lifestyle choices along with measuring blood pressure, conducting routine lipid profiling and standard physical examinations to evaluate personal risk factors.

How to minimize the side effects of medications?

A. All medications have the potential for side effects. Northport schools: LIPA needs to uphold its promise District to hold May 1 community forum to discuss status of lawsuit over power plant’s tax assessment Northport school officials are calling for Long Island Power Authority to uphold a decades-old promise over taxes on its power plant as a June trial date looms.

Superintendent Robert Banzer has called for LIPA to stand by a 1997 agreement made between the district, the utility company and former New York State Gov. George Pataki (R) in an April 16 letter to community residents. Banzer alleged the power company had agreed not to seek to lower the assessed tax value of the Northport power plant as long as local authorities did not abusively increase it over time.

“While it is a very complex issue that goes back to the 1990s, it boils down to one simple premise: LIPA made a promise to our school district and we are fighting hard to make sure they, and others, continue to fulfill their promise,” Banzer wrote in the letter.

In 2010, LIPA and National Grid filed a lawsuit against the district challenging the assessment of the power plant and demanding a 90 percent reduction in taxes, also seeking the difference in tax refunds retroactively.

“Obviously, a 90 percent reduction to the power plant’s assessment would be devastating to the school district, its residents and most importantly, our students,” Banzer wrote.

Northport power plant The district currently receives about 38 percent of its overall revenue from the taxes paid on the Northport power plant, or the equivalent of nearly $53 million per year.

The superintendent said the district has been involved in settlement discussions with LIPA “which at this point, has not yielded a reasonable resolution.” The utility company’s latest proposed settlement would be a 50 percent reduction in taxes over a nine-year period, according to the superintendent, which would increase the tax burden on district residents by millions

per year. Banzer said if this proposal took effect, the schools would be forced to “make additional modifications, including cutting programs and staff significantly.”

In his letter to residents the superintendent stated that the district remains open to negotiating a settlement with LIPA. He did not respond to requests for further interviews.

The two parties have limited time to reach an agreement as a state supreme court trial is slated to begin in June.

State senators John Flanagan (REast Northport) and Ken LaValle (R-Port

Jefferson) introduced legislation April 20 that could help mitigate any potential impact of the lawsuit on Northport taxpayers. The bill seeks to lengthen the time frame over which LIPA’s taxes would be gradually reduced from nine years to a proposed 15 years. In addition, it would grant the municipal governments and school districts who lose a tax assessment challenge to LIPA after April 1, 2018, access to the state’s electric generating facility cessation mitigation program. This way, town government and schools could create reserve funds to mitigate the burden on their taxpayers.

Other municipalities, villages and school districts have had better success in bargaining with the utility company to varying degrees. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) announced April 3 that the town government had reached a settlement with LIPA on its assessment lawsuit over the Port Jefferson power plant. Port Jefferson School District officials called this news “deeply troubling.”

“This decision will ... place the school district in harm’s way,” the district’s statement said.

A community forum will be held May 1 at 7 p.m. in Northport High School’s auditorium where district taxpayers can learn about the potential impacts of the LIPA lawsuit on their school taxes and their children’s education as it moves forward.

Trail dedicated in honor of Huntington WWII vet A secluded Kings Park trail was dedicated to honor a Huntington veteran, who is remembered as “humble” and yet “a trailblazer” by his family and friends.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation unveiled a plaque April 20 dedicating the walking path of the Kings Park Unique Area off Meadow Road to Sgt. Clarence Beavers. He was the last surviving original member of the first class of AfricanAmerican paratroopers from the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, known better as the Triple Nickles. He died Dec. 4, 2017.

“This is a long overdue honor to someone who obviously was a great American and a hometown hero here in Suffolk County,” said Peter Scully, the county’s deputy executive.

During World War II, Beavers and his fellow paratroopers worked jointly with the U.S. military and United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service on Operation Firefly in 1945. Their mission, as smokejumpers, was to respond to any threat or fires caused by the Japanese incendiary bomb attacks on the nation’s western forests.

In the summer of 1945, the Triple Nickle paratroopers responded to 36 fires and made more than 1,200 jumps, according to Deidra McGee, the U.S. Forest Services’ liaison for the Triple Nickles. McGee said the unit also led the way in the racial desegregation of the military starting in 1948.

“As people come and enjoy this beautiful trail, they can think of Sgt. Beavers and what he worked so hard to protect for all

of us, the beautiful forests of the United States, particularly the West Coast,” said state Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (RSt. James). “It’s an appropriate tribute.”

The Kings Park Unique Area is a 69-acre green space where residents can hike, bow hunt and go wildlife watching. The 0.3-mile trail dedicated to Beavers is handicapped accessible and features an interpretive kiosk that tells the story of the Triple Nickles. The site was chosen because it’s the closest stateowned woodlands to his home, according to DEC spokesman Bill Fonda.

“My father would be honored, very honored,” his daughter Charlotta Beavers said.

“It was very important to him that the 555th [battalion] and what they did be remembered.”

Lelena Beavers said she and her husband, Clarence, moved to Huntington in the late 1980s, after he finished his military service, to raise their five daughters and son. He continued to work for the federal government in the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense working as a computer systems analyst and programmer.

“Wherever he went, he would always get involved in the community,” his daughter Charlotta said.

The Rev. James Rea Jr., of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Huntington Station, recalled how Beavers played a pivotal role in helping the church after a fire approximately 25 years ago, when it was without a pastor.

“Clarence Beavers stepped up out of the ashes, not afraid of the fire or the smoke, and had the leadership that was necessary to have the church restored,” the pastor said.

Huntington officials host 5K Run to Save Lives

Huntington residents are being asked to lace-up their sneakers for a 5K race aimed at raising awareness that April is National Donate Life Month.

Town of Huntington council members Joan Cergol (D) and Mark Cuthbertson (D) are co-sponsoring the first 5K Run to Save Lives April 29 at Harborfields High School along with Simply Fit Health and Wellness gym, which has locations in Centerport and Huntington. The event aims to raise awareness for the importance of organ and tissue donation, an issue that hits close to home for Cuthbertson.

The councilman’s son Hunter said he was surprised when blood tests came back abnormal during his routine precollege physical in 2016. The younger Cuthbertson said further testing led him to be diagnosed with aplastic anemia, or bone marrow failure, an affliction causing his body to not produce enough blood cells.

“They said I could try to go back to school, but I would need a bone marrow transplant at some point,” he said.

Luckily for the councilman’s son, his younger brother was tested and wound up being a perfect match, despite just one-in-four odds. He underwent a week of chemotherapy before receiving his bone marrow transplant March 21, 2017.

“My treatment went really well,” the younger Cuthbertson said. “But it was really a perspective changing experience.”

He has since become a strong supporter

Representatives from LiveOnNY, a nonprofit association dedicated to recovering organs and tissues for transplants in the New York metropolitan region, and Be the Match, a 501(c)(3) organization that matches patients with marrow donors, will both be at the April 29 event to encourage people to sign up.

“I think everyone who has the time to get their cheek swabbed, which takes 15 seconds, should do it,” he said. “Even if you are not the match or don’t have the time to do it today, a couple years down the road you might be the match to save someone’s life.”

Cuthbertson is one of the two individuals

who will be recognized at the 5K race alongside Christian Siems, a 2012 Harborfields High School graduate. Siems said he considers himself one of the lucky ones. It was during one of the school’s annual blood drives that a nurse detected an issue with his heart.

“When she listened to my chest, she said, ‘You have a heart murmur,” but I hadn’t been diagnosed with a heart murmur; I got it checked out,” Siems said, indicating he later went for testing to St. Francis Hospital. “It was probably one of the scariest days of my life.”

Siems learned that his heart was starting to fail before age 21. He underwent surgery to have an internal defibrillator implanted and attempted to move forward with his plans to attend college.

But when Siems started feeling constantly tired, was pale, struggling to walk and even having difficulty talking, he was rushed to Huntington Hospital. Doctors had him airlifted via helicopter to cardiac specialists at Westchester Medical Center who informed him he would need a heart transplant.

“I was told I had to sit in the hospital and wait for a heart,” Siems said. “It could have been six months; it could have been a year.”

Doctors decided to risk performing an open-heart surgery to install an assistive device that would allow Siems to wait for his much-need transplant at home. He received a phone call after only six months that a donor was found. Siems celebrated the third anniversary of his successful heart transplant April 25.

“Nationally, 23 people die every day because they don’t receive an organ,” he said.

“In New York, if you get too far out [on the list] a lot of times a doctor will tell you to move to another state to get an organ faster.”

New York state also has the thirdlowest donor registration rate in the country, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, a section of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“There’s no general knowledge about organ donation out there,” Siems said. “A lot of people don’t know what it is, there’s a lot of myths and misconceptions.”

He encouraged local residents to come to the event and learn more about signing up to become an organ donor. Race registration costs $25 for adults and $10 for students. All proceeds will go to LiveOnNY. Register online at www.LivingSimplyFit.com/5k.

Huntington marks historic 1917 women’s suffrage rally

Huntington history buffs and town officials gathered downtown on Tuesday to commemorate a historic rally turned family feud that played a critical role in the women’s suffrage movement.

Huntington Town officials unveiled a new historic marker sign at the corner of Wall and Main streets April 24 that tells the tale of a 1913 women’s suffrage rally in what’s now Huntington village.

“Here we are now, 105 years later, and this controversial event for women’s rights is going to be commemorated for all to see,” Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) said.

“Signs like this show you what a progressive area Huntington was and continues to be, especially when it comes to civil rights.”

In July 1913, there was a clash in the fight for women’s voting rights in downtown Huntington. It was fueled by a family feud between a mother and daughter over a wagon and whether women should have the right to vote.

Activists Rosalie Jones and Edna Buckman Kearns staged a suffrage rally at the intersection of Wall and Main streets that was attended by more than 1,000 people. There was a wagon named the “Spirit of 1776” used by the women who were upset about taxation without representation. Mary Jones, Rosalie’s mother and a virulent anti-suffragist, stepped

There were less anti-suffragists compared to women suffragists in the early 20th century according to Antonia Petrash, president of the Long Island Woman Suffrage Association, but they were just as adamant and animated as

their counterparts.

“They were very vocal and active,” Petrash said. “They used the same tactics as the suffragists such as hosting conventions and calling politicians.”

Women in New York State would be given the right to vote in 1917, three years before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed.

“I think it’s so fantastic that we have

this monumental placement of the marker,” Jillian Guthman, Huntington’s receiver of taxes, said.

“But it does leave me in awe that in this wonderful country that we’re in, that just a short time ago, there was an issue of the right to vote for women.”

The sign was funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a Syracuse-based foundation that provides grants for historic signs. Petrash and Marguerite Kearns, a historian and granddaughter of Edna Buckman Kearns, helped secure the funding for the historical marker.

Town Historian Robert Hughes said that signs like these are part of an effort to give historical notoriety to minorities and other overlooked groups in Huntington.

“This is the 125th historical marker in the town of Huntington,” Hughes said. “In the early years they would always commemorate Colonial sites, but in more recent years we’ve tried to make a concerted effort to commemorate those unknown parts of our history, such as African American sites like the Jupiter Hammon House, and now with this marker for women’s suffrage.”

The wagon involved in the July 1913 parade was donated by Marguerite Kearns to The New York State Museum in Albany. It will be on display through May 13.

Steve Israel celebrates release of his second novel at Book Revue

A Huntington politician turned author is hoping his newest novel hits its mark.

Former U.S. Congressman Steve Israel (D) celebrated the release of his latest work of fiction “Big Guns” at Huntington’s Book Revue, located at 313 New York Ave., April 19 to a standing-room-only crowd.

The 320-page novel, released April 17 by publisher Simon & Schuster, is a political satire on national gun control issues that almost seems ripped from recent headlines.

“After Sandy Hook, I saw the president crying about all the first-graders who were murdered and I thought that now things are going to be different,” Israel said. “But nothing changed.”

The former politician said he was inspired after reading that the small town of Nelson, Georgia, passed an ordinance in 2013 that every single resident had to own and carry a gun — or pay a fine.

“That triggered the idea for the book,” he said.

“Big Guns” is the second novel written by Israel, following “The Global War on Morris,” which hit book stores in December 2014. Both novels are fictional political satires that make illusions and references to Long Island towns.

“I believe that satire is the most successful way of making a point,” he said. “I wanted to make my point without slapping people in the face, and satire is more believable when you use local references.”

Readers may be surprised to find Israel’s novel is also filled with local characters who are based on people he served with when he was a Huntington town councilman, from 1993 to 2001, and others he met while in Congress.

While serving in the U.S. Congress, the former politician said he and other Democratic congressmen had attempted to pass several bills on gun reform: universal background checks, “no fly, no buy” laws and laws that would outlaw bullets that can pierce a cop’s body armor. All were defeated.

Israel said one day in the Members-Only Elevator in the House, a colleague told him

that he couldn’t believe he had just voted against all these gun reform amendments.

But otherwise, he couldn’t go back to his district and face all his NRA supporters.

“That shows the intensity of gun voters,” Israel said. “They vote on guns and that’s all.

They don’t vote on other issues. And they will not forgive politicians who vote against guns.”

The former politician has been actively involved with the March for Our Lives Long Island movement, founded by 16-year-old Huntington resident Avalon Fenster. While she is still too young to vote, Fenster said she agrees that “young people are the change.”

Several students attended the event after having heard Israel speak at the March for Our Lives rally March 24, including Spencer James, a fourth-grader from Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School in Huntington.

“I want my future to be safe and happy,” Spencer said.

Israel said he feels there is hope now for real change in federal gun control policies.

“Our government has failed us on this issue, the adults have allowed this to happen,” he said. “But these young people today are not giving up. They will not forget. And so there will be change.”

In the feature story category, TBR News Media had two winners for its division among publications with similar circulation. Port Times Record Editor Alex Petroski won first place for his story on how a local political party boss helped President Donald Trump (R) win Long Island votes.

“Following the election, many wondered, ‘How did Trump win?’ judges wrote about Petroski’s piece titled “One on one with the man who helped Donald Trump win Suffolk County,” which profiled Suffolk County Republican Committee Chairman John Jay LaValle and details his relationship with the president. “This story answers that on a micro level with an in-depth interview of the man who helped Trump in Suffolk County. I think more papers would have been well served to seek out similar stories.”

story on a spooky local bar in Smithtown.

“A perfect pre-Halloween story about the haunted local watering hole,” NYPA judges said. “Plenty of examples of what some have seen, heard and felt, which is just what you’d want from a story about a haunted building.”

Petroski also won second place in Division 3 for his ongoing coverage on a boat ramp in Port Jefferson Village where two people had died and at least one other was severely injured, in the news series category. Times of Huntington Editor Sara-Megan Walsh took third place in the same category.

“Comprehensive, sustained coverage of a life-or-death infrastructure issue,” the judges wrote of Petroski’s five-piece submission that included three stories, a front page and an editorial on the topic. “Lede with compelling citizens rather than reports from bureaucrats or written statements. Narrative scene-setting ledes can make stories like this more important and compelling.”

Redding also roped in a second award, getting a third-place nod in feature photo Division 2 for a picture he took for The Village Beacon Record at the Hope Walk for Addiction at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai.

“There was tight competition for third place, but the emotion on the faces of the people in this photo put it a step above the rest,” the judges said of the women hugging and crying in the photo, who’d lost loved ones to battles with addiction.

“Nice photos and an insightful story on

the characters portraying a beloved classic,” judges said.

The Village Times Herald won first place for its classified advertising, as judges said it was “clean, precise, well-spaced and not crowded,” and Wendy Mercier claimed a first-place prize for best small space ad. TBR News Media’s Sharon Nicholson won second place for her design of a best large space ad.

The Village Times Herald ranked in the Top 5 in total advertising contest points with 50, good for fourth place. The first-place winner, Dan’s Papers, received 90.

Greenlawn paramedic, M. Kent Stillwagon, dies in line of duty Decorated rescue squad member recognized as member of year twice, 2017 Top EMT in Charge

The Greenlawn Fire Department is grieving the loss of one of its bravest while in the line of duty.

M. Kent Stillwagon, 52, a Greenlawn paramedic and a former rescue squad lieutenant, died April 17. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Stillwagon was on duty at his house, where he was found in cardiac arrest, after responding to numerous calls for help late April 16. His fellow volunteers of the Greenlawn Fire Department responded, attempted to resuscitate him and rushed him to Huntington Hospital. An extended effort to resuscitate him was made by the hospital’s staff, according to a statement issued by the Greenlawn Fire Department.

“Kent Stillwagon was one of the finest paramedics and volunteers this department has ever seen,” Michael Bellis, chief of Greenlawn Fire Department, said in the statement. “A truly selfless member, he was always willing to help in any capacity without hesitation. He continually applied his wealth of knowledge, teaching and shaping senior and junior members alike, including members of surrounding agencies where he worked part time as a paramedic. There

are so many people, myself included, who are better people, better volunteers and better EMS providers for having known and worked with Kent Stillwagon.”

Stillwagon became a member of the Greenlawn Fire Department in June 2004 as a volunteer firefighter. He then received his certification as a basic emergency responder technician from the state, before eventually becoming a certified paramedic.

Stillwagon left the fire department in July 2010 but would rejoin in April 2017.

He was recognized as Rescue Member of the Year twice, first in 2005 and again in 2009. Stillwagon received the Top EMT in Charge award in 2017 for answering 104 calls despite only being an active member for three-quarters of the year.

“All those [who] knew him, know that he was a very private and quiet person,” Bellis said in his eulogy of Stillwagon. “But when he went to work, helping to save a stranger, his focus was pinpoint. His direction was clear.”

The Greenlawn Fire Department has chosen to retire the radio identifier of “Medic 3” in honor of Stillwagon after giving him a traditional final dispatch call.

“We are forever grateful for your service to our department and this community and promise that your memory will never be forgotten,” said the dispatcher, ending

— Michael Bellis Stillwagon’s final call. “Rest easy brother, we’ve got it from here.”

Stillwagon is survived by his wife of 16 years, Terry Fichter-Stillwagon, as well as his beloved rescue dogs, Frankie and Zena. His funeral and firematic services were held at M.A. Connell Funeral Home in Huntington Station. A private cremation followed as per Stillwagon’s wishes.

M. Kent Stillwagon volunteered in the Greenlawn Fire Department from June 2004 to July 2010, before returning in April 2017.

Beekeepers, assemblymen work to save honeybees Representatives from local beekeepers club attribute worsening colony loss to pesticide use, decline in flower resources On an April afternoon, Maria Hoffman, beekeeper and chief of staff to state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), strolled unfazed through a swarm of darting honeybees. She never had any fear of them, not even as a child.

The thing that does bother her — that has her and other local beekeepers living in anxiety — is the threat of colony loss.

“I had nine hives going into the winter, I came out with three,” Hoffman, of Setauket, said. “It’s hard because you feel responsible for it. It’s my job to take care of them. But I know other beekeepers had similar losses.”

Colony loss has gotten worse over the last year. Long Island Beekeepers Club, an organization that boasts more than 300

members based mostly in Suffolk County, did an informal survey of 60 of their members with 243 hives between them. They estimated an approximate 50 percent colony loss from April 2017 to April 2018. This is compared to last year which estimated colony loss at approximately 30 percent.

“All of us are working extremely hard to keep our colonies alive on our own dime,” Smithtown beekeeper Moira Alexander said. “We are doing everything, everything to ensure our colonies success, and quite honestly we are losing that battle. We can feed them when there is a time of dearth.

We can work on their health issues, we can provide water sources, but the one thing we cannot do is control weather and climate.”

Beekeepers from the club met with Englebright and state Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-St. James) April 6 to discuss the many problems that are affecting bees and beekeepers. The club said there were several items the state could help with to curb this hive loss, including the need for more state bee inspectors, protecting and expanding areas of pollen-producing plants and limiting harmful pesticides.

Club members said that there has been a loss of forage of native pollinating plants being destroyed or replaced with nonflowering or non-pollinating plants.

“Right now, in most of my yards, I’m down to five colonies in a yard from 10,” said Donal Peterson, vice president of the Long Island Beekeepers Club. “A pound of honey takes about two million flower visits. If you are going to put them out in a place, you want them to be able to feed themselves, and then make you a bit of money. With this loss, they can’t do that.”

Beekeepers say flower resources are diminishing, and the number of lawns, or “green deserts,” as beekeeper Grace Mehl calls them, has only expanded.

According to a 2015 study conducted by NASA and several Colorado and Montana state universities, lawns take up more than

63,000 square miles of land in the United States. It is the largest single crop in the country.

“That gives you a perspective of how we are affecting our environment,” Mehl said.

The group proposed planting flowers and other pollen producing plants along major highways, and also putting the emphasis on pollen producing trees like linden trees in metropolitan areas.

Beekeepers also complained about the many pesticides and fungicides that affect both bees and other native pollinators, including neonicotinoids, an agricultural insecticide structurally resembling nicotine.

“Neonicotinoids — which mimic nicotine ... [are] known to be toxic to insects,” said Huntington beekeeper Rich Blohm.

“It’s a systemic pesticide — it has to be put on the plant and the insect has to walk on the plant.”

Club members said that New York State’s bee inspection services are severely limited on Long Island, which means top club members often take the role of inspecting

people’s hives for disease, virus or mismanagement onto themselves.

“We are proactive as a club about hive health and inspection, and handle all that through our club because of deep cuts to the state’s apiary inspection program,” Alexander said. “So, if there is a health issue with bees here, we immediately inform our membership and set up an inspection.”

Both Fitzpatrick and Englebright were open to the idea of crafting law to protect the bees during the meeting. Fitzpatrick said that beekeepers should spread the word to influence both local politicians and citizens.

“Your customers become a lobby force as well, they’ll need your support,” he said.

Englebright, chair of the Assembly’s environmental conservation committee, said he would work across party lines to allocate more money for bee inspections.

“I would like to mention to create a category in law, on state and local land, for pollinator sanctuaries,” the assemblyman said. “I think we should start on Long Island. I think we should do it here first.”

In a battle of undefeated teams, Northport worked for each possession, goal and turnover to take a 9-6 win over host Ward Melville April 24.

“It’s the best feeling knowing we came out strong and were able to finish against a really

great team,” said junior midfielder Olivia Carner, who scored a game-high four times and added an assist. Her final goal served as insurance, finding an empty net with 33 seconds left. “I was nervous, but I knew we had to be confident and work together.”

Northport junior goalkeeper Claire Morris made a stop with 7:18 remaining, and senior midfielder Nicole Orella scored the go-ahead goal off that possession for a 7-6 advantage in a game that saw five ties.

“We wanted to take care of the ball, make good decisions, and they were able to do that,” said Northport head coach Carol Rose. “They played as a team — they needed everybody.”

Rose said she was most impressed with senior attack Katherine Meyer, who scored twice. Her second goal, off a Danielle Pavinelli assist, gave Northport an 8-6 cushion with 2:03 left in the game.

“That’s the most she’s scored in a game, so she stepped up big for us,” the coach said.

“Everybody contributed in some way. The defense was relentless, they caused a lot of turnovers. The goalie played really well. I’m just so happy that they kept up the intensity throughout the entire game. They’re fighters, and they kept their composure.”

After the teams traded scores until the game was 4-all, senior midfielder Emerson Cabrera popped outside the zone and made an arc around to the front of the cage where she scored from the left side to give Northport its first two-goal lead, 6-4, with 20 minutes left in the second half. Once again Ward Melville raced back into contention, with seniors Kate Mulham and Shannon Brazier scoring on free position and diving shots, respectively, to make it a new game.

“Kate Mulham is a really fast girl and we all knew we needed to be on our toes with her,” said Northport junior defender Isabella Hubbard. “We paid attention to her a lot throughout the game. There was a lot of pressure on [the defense], but we knew what we had to do and how to get it done.”

Ward Melville head coach Kerri Kilkenny said she saw her team struggling to move the

ball, and that losing draws early on put the Patriots in a hole.

“Northport was shooting the ball — they took at least double the amount of shots that we did,” she said. “They were more disciplined today than we were. They were absolutely the better team, but we hung in there. It was a midseason battle, a test, and I told them to remember this feeling, because I can guarantee we’ll be seeing them again somewhere down the road.”

The win was Rose’s 400th during her 29 years at the helm. She has averaged more than 14 wins per season at Northport.

“It’s kind of surreal — that’s a lot of lax games,” she said. “It’s an honor to have had the privilege to coach these wonderful, talented players in Northport throughout my tenure. It would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work that these kids put in throughout the years. They wanted this win bad, more than me, and they were really excited. They’re taking care of business and they’re on a mission.”

Northport (9-0 overall, 8-0 in Division I) plays host to Sachem North April 27 for a 4 p.m. matchup. Ward Melville (8-1, 7-1) will travel to Sachem East for a 4:30 p.m. game April 27.

able in each school house of the district and the Board of Education office located at 158 Laurel Avenue, Northport, New York, commencing on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

A Real Property Tax Exemption Report prepared in accordance with Section 495 of the Real Property Tax Law will be annexed to any tentative/preliminary budget as well as the final adopted budget of which it will form a part; and shall be posted on the District bulletin board(s) maintained for public notices, as well as on the District’s website.

POLL WATCHING The following regulations will be in effect for the Annual Budget Vote and Election regarding poll watching: Poll watchers shall be required to identify themselves to the district clerk no less than seventy-two (72) hours prior to the Election at which time they will be provided with an identification tag indicating “poll watcher.” Such previously identified poll watchers shall sign in with the district clerk or her designee upon arrival at the polling place. One (1) poll watcher for each election district will be permitted per candidate or organization at any given time.

Poll watchers will not be permitted between the Board of Registration tables and the voting machines or behind the voting machines at any time during voting hours.

An area, with a full view of the polls, will be designated for poll watchers. Poll watchers will remain within the designated area and will not, under any circumstances, be permitted to wander about the polling place.

Following the recording of the vote by the district clerk and/or inspectors of election, poll watchers will be permitted time to view the voting machines prior to the locking of the machines. Poll watchers are not permitted behind the machines while the tally is being taken by the district clerk and/or inspectors.

Any questions regarding poll watchers are to be directed to the district clerk. All actions of poll watchers shall be unobtrusive and may in no manner interfere with the orderly conduct of the voting.

Redirecting energy toward overdoses RITA J. EGAN

Civic leaders hope to halt the construction of a canopy at a gas station in Setauket to maintain the area’s Main Street feel.

Planning to avoid battles A recurring battle along the North Shore that we’re noticing is the struggle communities go through to maintain historical characteristics while also satisfying modern business needs.

Where town or village codes may be lacking to maintain historical and/or architectural cohesion, community leaders are recognizing the importance of creating visioning plans. Our hope is that the want for sense of place is mixed with the needs of businesses in order to fill empty storefronts when crafting each plan in order to create a healthy mix.

Setting up guidelines to maintain its architectural heritage and cohesion is something Port Jefferson Village is paying attention to. At the end of last year, a draft resolution based on a meeting of the village’s architectural review committee was introduced. If passed, it would require new buildings in the village’s commercial districts to adhere to designs consistent with Port Jeff’s “Victorian, maritime heritage” and to avoid a “hodgepodge” of buildings. The policy is far from complete but standards are being discussed, and that’s a good start.

Constructing a visioning plan, with the assistance of residents and business owners, would be beneficial for revitalization in areas like Broadway in Rocky Point. Setauket and Stony Brook residents took a step in the right direction when community leaders, residents and business owners met in 2016 and 2017 to create the Route 25A Three Village Area Visioning Report. The report, approved by the Brookhaven Town Board and pending the adoption of a land-use study by the town’s planning department, creates guidelines for issues that affect the Three Village area including maintaining cohesive architecture.

It gave the Three Village Civic Association some backup when it opposed the owners of a Shell gas station in Setauket on Route 25A applying for variances to the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals. The company submitted proposed plans to construct a large canopy and a lighted electric sign at the gas station. The board closed an April 18 hearing without a decision and, according to town guidelines, has 62 days to make one. While the owners say most gas stations have canopies, residents at the hearing provided evidence to the contrary along Route 25A between St. James and Port Jefferson.

If the gas station doesn’t get its way with its plans, we doubt it will vacate the premises. But what about other cases when a business owner feels an addition would attract more customers? This is when a visioning plan created with history in mind, but also present business needs can have the most impact. During discussions, compromise may be the key.

Northport Village has been able to strike such an agreement. Last summer, the village board was approached about building a hotel at 225 Main St. — something unheard of before then. While residents criticized the proposed plans, the village approved a code modification to make way for the inn. Then the village’s architectural review board toured the 1950s building to determine firsthand if it had any historic value, before allowing the proposed plans to move forward. This two-step process allowed for a democratic proceeding, while protests may have otherwise left empty storefronts or rundown properties standing as eyesores, which is not the best option.

With some discussion, civic-minded folks with a respect for historical aspects can keep business districts from looking like an unattractive mixture of buildings. Taking in the concerns of business owners, can keep those buildings filled.

Anger, while a strong motivating force, can too often cloud thoughtful deliberation. When that emotion is consistently fueled by an energized, supportive media, crucial facts become ignored. The result is one’s ability to prioritize critical information and make good decisions based on solid evidence is compromised.

Sadly, that has become the case with the roiling debate over the Second Amendment. Lost in the noble call to stop killers with guns is data showing accidental drug overdoses are deadlier than gun homicides, especially in Suffolk County.

Analysis of FBI stats shows there were about 11,000 gun-related homicides in 2016. The semiautomatic AR-15 rifle was considered responsible for under 400 of those.

Meanwhile, in the same year, drug

overdoses took the lives of well over 64,000 Americans, many of them school age. The probability of dying from an overdose is nearly six times greater than being shot to death. For every one person murdered by someone using an AR-15 almost 185 die from drugs.

The percentages are far more dramatic here in Suffolk County.

According to then Police Commissioner Tim Sini, there were 34 homicides in 2016. State records show 13 of them were “firearm related.” During the same year 360 residents were lost to the drug epidemic. That ratio is almost 28 to 1.

It’s almost unimaginable that anyone reading this hasn’t been in some way touched by a friend, family member or neighbor whose been affected by this curse. How many of us have been brokenheart-

ed attending wakes and funerals of those suddenly, shockingly, inexplicably taken? Yet even as this deadly scourge has swallowed our area like no other in New York State, it’s disappointing local activists “marching for our lives” haven’t loudly proclaimed reducing accidental OD fatalities to be part of their life-saving mission. While it would be sensational to prevent the one person a month from being shot to death in Suffolk, it would save a whole lot more lives if we could reduce by half the one person a day killed by a drug overdose. Redirecting some of the aforementioned emotion and properly recalibrating priorities accordingly might be a worthy place to start.

Sheriff Toulon: Investing in crime prevention Each year, hundreds of thousands of people are released from jails and prisons throughout the United States. Nearly two thirds of these individuals will be rearrested within three years — perpetuating a cycle of crime and recidivism that impacts public safety, burdens taxpayers and creates generational instability.

This is not surprising given the data: 68 percent of inmates participating in a rehabilitation program at the county jail report they have a close family member that has been incarcerated, 92 percent admit to a drug problem and 63 percent have a mental health condition. Other common issues include homelessness, employment insecurity and learning deficits.

Fortunately, calls for criminal justice reforms have gained momentum throughout the nation, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are in agreement

on many proposals. If the goal of criminal justice reform is to reduce the number of individuals caught up in the cycle of crime, incarceration and recidivism, then there must be a corresponding investment in crime prevention, re-entry and reducing roadblocks to successful reintegration.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has taken the lead on these issues. His 2018 Criminal Justice Reform Package includes several crime prevention reforms directed toward at-risk youth that I believe would greatly improve public safety in Long Island communities.

The proposal includes expanded after-school programs, vocational training opportunities, gang prevention education and comprehensive case management services for immigrant youth, often targeted by gangs like MS-13.

As corrections professionals, we must also do our part to improve the way that inmates are

prepared to re-enter society after serving time in jail and prison.

Last month I announced that I would soon be implementing a systemwide discharge model at the county jail that would link sentenced inmates with service providers in their communities, provide more vocational and rehabilitative programs, as well as connections to faith-based organizations. I will also be implementing a special Young Adult Program to prevent future criminal involvement.

By addressing the known behaviors and circumstances that often underlie criminal behavior, and by investing more in crime prevention, we will go a long way toward shutting the proverbial revolving door of generational crime and incarceration.

Putin has no place in White House Invite Putin to the White House? Are you serious? Perhaps a visit to the International Court of Justice would be more appropriate, and it would be more in keeping with his political behavior.

The Russian dictator shoots or poisons his opposition and so what does our president do? He invites Putin to our White House.

He also congratulates him on his nondemocratic election.

Putin must have something on the Donald, sexual or economic, due to Trump’s desire to have a Trump Tower placed next to the Kremlin. The Donald denies any collusion with the Russians or having any help in his upset victory in the 2016 election. He asks [Jeff] Sessions, our attorney general, to protect him, and when he asked FBI head [Jim] Comey to give a break to his future national security adviser,

Comey refused and then he was fired. Our president doesn’t listen to his lawyers and advisers but seems to follow the views of Fox News. I wonder who will protect Americans, our present democracy and great nation against Donald Trump.

P.S. We do not have to make America great again or send troops to the Mexican border.

A brief encounter with an outraged motorist

T

he morning routine for all four of us was slightly off kilter. My daughter, who usually doesn’t have the energy to complain about starting her day, suggested that she really needed a day off. Sorry, but that wasn’t going to happen. Besides, she doesn’t generally want a day at home because she feels as if she would fall behind in her classes and would rather keep pace.

I dropped her off at school as she groaned something to the effect of, “Bye, have a good day, I hate this.”

down the stairs. It’s an expression we use that is exactly as it sounds. He throws his feet so heavily and loudly on the steps that the house shakes until he reaches the first floor, turns hard to his right twice and collapses into his chair.

My wife and I raced out of the house two minutes behind our usual departure time. Two minutes? How was I supposed to make it to a train that is only early when we’re late? It’s Murphy’s law of trains. Whatever can go wrong with the commute does go wrong and, often, in conjunction with other problems.

We came to the final light seconds before the train was scheduled to pull in.

We reached the traffic light just as it turned red, in that small window when all the lights are red at the same time.

Despite the line to my left waiting for a green light, I made a right on red and pulled into the intersection behind another car waiting to make the

immediate left into the train station.

Unfortunately, the cars on the other side of the street hadn’t left an opening for the frantic commuters to reach the station. When their light changed, the traffic immediately started moving, blocking us from making the turn.

My wife considered getting out, racing across the street and trotrunning through the parking lot.

The cars speeding by near her door made that impossible.

A car behind me honked, moved to our right and slowly passed. A woman in her 60s flipped us the bird.

Do we still do that? Do we still raise our middle finger to strangers? I do it to my computer when it’s frozen and to my phone when it’s not allowing me to respond to an email or text, or when it adds an error to one of my emails because it retyped a name into something potentially problematic.

But this woman, with her tight lips, curled and dyed hair, and menacing

eyes, slowly rolled past me, extending the curse finger just in front of her left shoulder. That raised digit was so stiff, long and rigid that it looked it could just as easily have been a weapon as a gesture.

I was stunned to react immediately.

Then a few responses ricocheted around my head as my wife raced out of the car: “Sorry? Right back at you, sweetheart.” ... “You know what you can do with that finger.”

It’s possible her day had, or was expected to have, much bigger problems than mine. I am sorry I upset her so much that she needed to express her outrage.

Or maybe I gave her a chance to be angry at something other than herself, her family, her boss or the people who work for her. Could I have done her a favor, providing a target for her anger?

I don’t know her story, but I do know that my day suddenly seemed less problematic.

United States, where education is viewed as the ladder to success, a traditional college education at a fine college has always been ranked at the top of the pyramid. Those schools are also the most expensive because they are mainly private. There are various scholarships to help, but for most without adequate resources those schools can be out of reach.

Then there are public universities, many of which are exemplary and much cheaper, particularly if you live in state. And three cheers for the two-year community colleges that can carry you halfway to a college degree with truly minimum expense. There are also work-study schools that may take longer to graduate from, but who is holding a stopwatch on your life?

Anyway, what you get out of college is directly proportional to what you put in. Like the computer expression, it’s garbage in, garbage out. So what is the bottom line here?

What can you expect to get out of a good, traditional college?

For starters, there is knowledge, knowledge about almost everything known to humans at the time you attend. It’s there for the asking,

assuming there is room for you to enroll in the classes of your choice.

And if you go on to college reasonably soon after you graduate from high school, you can focus on acquiring the knowledge of your choice without the responsibilities of a spouse, a car, a house, children, a dog and making a living. In college, you have a roof over your head, your meals are prepared and the lawn is mowed for you. The knowledge you choose to acquire may or may not turn out to be directly applicable to the work that you eventually do, but it will certainly contribute to your understanding of your world — scientifically, culturally, historically, economically, politically, and that will give you profound satisfaction. If your job depends on what you know rather than how much you can lift, knowledge will extend your work life, at the senior end when those whose bodies can no longer respond to physical tasks may face uncertain “golden years.”

Learning, of course, doesn’t depend on or stop with a college education. But appreciation for the value of knowledge grows as we age. Boy, how I wish I could live again those college years.

Now I would know why I was there.

To be or not to be all that you can be

t actually makes me cringe when I hear discussions questioning whether a college education is worth the expense. Yes, college loans carried by students after they graduate are astronomical and unprecedented.

The average student loan debt for the Class of 2016, for example, is $37,172, up 6 percent from the preceding year.

Americans owe, in total, more than $1.48 trillion in student loans spread out over 44 million borrowers, more than the $620 billion owed on credit cards, according to figures obtained from Student

By Leah S. Dunaief the Loan Hero website. Average monthly student loan repayment after graduation, for borrowers 20 to 30 years of age, is $351.

Those are, of course, mammoth numbers that are hard to conceive.

Between you and me

But how about this for comparison: Mortgage debt is $8.8 trillion. You can move out of a house, but you only have one head. And what you fill that head with can determine the quality of the rest of your life. Your house may contain your financial equity, but your knowledge base and critical thinking make up your life’s equity.

I know the stories about the college dropouts who become billionaires.

Good for them, they don’t have to worry about money. But that is part of the point I am trying to make.

Education is not only about money, about the job you will hold or the amount of toys you will own by the time you die. Education is partially about income, as statistics prove.

College grads earn more in the course of their lives than high school grads.

And while today’s auto mechanic, who goes to a vocational school and who is really a kind of computer engineer can earn as much, perhaps, as a doctor or lawyer, money is not the only value in life. Satisfaction, a key ingredient of happiness, is another.

So what do you get from a college education? Is it worth the price?
