New York State Attorney General’s office announced March 28 that it has expanded a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers, distributors and members of the Sackler family, whose company Purdue Pharma made and marketed OxyContin. The lawsuit, originally filed in Suffolk County, has now become the nation’s most extensive case to date to legally address the opioid crisis. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) applauded the move. “It is our hope that our lawsuit, and ones like it, will bear fruit that forever changes the way destructive—but profitable—drugs are marketed and sold across the nation,” he said. The lawsuit alleges that six national prescription opioid manufacturers, four prescription drug distributors and members of the Sackler family are largely responsible for creating the opioid epidemic through years of false and deceptive marketing that ignored their obligation to prevent unlawful diversion of the
addictive substance. The amended lawsuit includes Attorney General Letitia James’ findings from a multi-year, industry-wide investigation of opioid market participants, which alleges that manufacturers implemented a common “playbook” to mislead the public about the safety, efficacy, and risks of their prescription opioids. “Manufacturers pushed claims that opioids could improve quality of life and cognitive functioning, promoted false statements about the non-addictive nature of these drugs, masked signs of addiction by referring to them as “pseudoaddiction” and encouraged greater opioid use to treat it, and suggested that alternative pain relief methods were riskier than opioids, among other grossly misleading claims,” the attorney general’s office stated in its summary of the amended suit. The office claims that manufacturers used a vast network of sales representatives to push dangerous narratives and target susceptible doctors, flood publications with their deceptive advertisements, and offer consumer discount cards and other incentives
to them to request treatment with their product. The manufacturers named in the amended complaint include Purdue Pharma and its affiliates, members of the Sackler family (owners of Purdue) and trusts they control, Janssen Pharmaceuticals and its affiliates (including parent company Johnson & Johnson), Mallinckrodt LLC and its affiliates, Endo Health Solutions and its affiliates, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and its affiliates and Allergan Finance, LLC. The distributors named in the complaint are McKesson Corporation, Cardinal Health, Inc., Amerisource Bergen Drug Corporation and Rochester Drug Cooperative, Inc. “As the Sackler Family and the other defendants grew richer, New Yorkers’ health grew poorer and our state was left to foot the bill,” James stated. “The manufacturers and distributors of opioids are to blame for this crisis and it is past time they take responsibility.” The opioid epidemic has ravaged families and communities nationwide and across New York. Suffolk County has been particularly hard hit statewide. When the county originally filed
its lawsuit, legislators reported that the region suffered the highest number of heroin deaths statewide. Between 2009 and 2013, 418 people died of a heroin overdose. Many people turned to heroin when their prescriptions ran out. The opioid related death tolls have continued to rise. According to New York State Health Department data for 2017, opioid pain relievers, including illicitly produced fentanyl, caused 429 deaths in Suffolk County. Over six thousand people were admitted for opioid addiction, including heroin, into the counties Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services. “I applaud New York State Attorney General James for joining in our efforts to recoup untold amounts of public funds that were spent to assist those afflicted by this epidemic,” Bellone stated. “Suffolk County is taking a page out of Big Tobacco’s playbook to hold the Sackler family and others accountable for their role in connection with the opioid crisis. County Legislators Sarah Anker (D-Mt. Sinai), Kara Hahn (D-Port Jefferson) and William Spencer (D-Centerport) originally cosponsored the bill.

department’s Homicide Squad and the DA’s Homicide Bureau revealed evidence that Contreras allegedly ordered AbregoGomez’s murder after the victim was reportedly seen on social media flashing gang signs associated with the 18th Street gang, which is a rival gang of MS-13. “The motive here is one that we’ve seen numerous times, particularly by MS-13, where gang members use violence to retaliate against rival gang members,” Sini said. Contreras, who was being held in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in Virginia awaiting deportation proceedings, was brought back to Suffolk County on March 28 by the county Homicide Squad detectives to face prosecution on the indictment. He was arraigned on the indictment today by Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Philip Goglas and was remanded without bail. If convicted, Contreras faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The indictment also charges Anthony Gutierrez-Meza, 23, with Murder in the Second Degree for allegedly acting in concert with Contreras to commit the murder. Gutierrez-Meza’s last known address in New York was in Valley Stream. He is currently in police custody in Virginia and will be arraigned on the indictment at a later date.

What Long Islanders can do now to support clean energy initiatives
BY DONNA DEEDY DONNA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) agenda includes converting the state to 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2040. Many people are ready to join the initiative but are unsure what to do. Gordian Raacke is the executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island, a nonprofit group founded in 2003 that is committed to transitioning Long Islanders to 100 percent renewable sources of energy. His organization educates the public, works with local governments and works with community interest groups to bring about the shifts needed to enable widespread adoption of renewable energy. Raacke offers this advice to people eager to make a move toward clean energy: Is there a hierarchy of strategies that people can implement to make the switch from fossil fuels to renewable sources? People often ask me, and I always tell them that the best place to start is by stopping needless energy waste. There are lots of ways to get started, big and small; and if big is not feasible it is totally OK to start small. The important thing is to take the first step, and then the next ... When people are looking to go solar, it is useful to remember that energy efficiency improvements are the most cost-effective way to lower your energy bills. And making energy efficiency improvements first means that the size of the solar array can be smaller and therefore less costly. Where should homeowners start? The easiest way for a homeowner to get started in a comprehensive way is to get a free home energy audit through PSEG-LI’s program, www. psegliny.com/saveenergyandmoney/homeefficiency/homeassessments/homeenergyassessment. A specially trained, Building Performance Institute–accredited contractor will assess the energy efficiency of your home with state-of-theart diagnostic tools and produce a list of recommended improvements with expected costs and savings. The homeowner can then decide which

recommendations to follow and can also obtain rebates and financing for this. Super-simple things are, of course, just replacing conventional or compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs with more energy-efficient LED bulbs (their light quality has improved a lot over earlier versions, and they are quite inexpensive now). Adding low-flow adapters to kitchen, bath and shower can help reduce hot water heating costs. Replacing the thermostats

with internet-controlled smart thermostats can save money on both heating and cooling costs. And sealing cracks around windows and doors can often be done by DIY homeowners. When shopping for new appliances, it pays to look at the EnergyStar ratings and select models with
lower annual energy costs. Pool pumps are now much more energy efficient (called variable speed pool pumps) and save a lot of electricity during the summer. Some of these items are offered with attractive utility rebates. Is it a good time to go solar? When going solar, it is important to get several estimates from reputable and experienced local contractors. It is also important to fully understand the difference between owning and leasing a system. And, by the end of this year, the federal solar tax credit for residential rooftop solar arrays is decreasing (and will continue to decrease further). To be eligible to get the current 30 percent federal tax credit, a solar array has to be in service by Dec. 31, 2019. So now is a good time to get some solar estimates. Both Renewable Energy Long Island and the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College offer advice on finding reputable solar contractors. The Sustainability Institute, also a nonprofit, publishes on its website an evaluation on choosing between owning and leasing. Concerned Taxpayers Against LIPA rally to seek legislative support A Town of Huntington-based advocacy group, Concerned Taxpayers Against LIPA, organized a rally April 2 at the Long Island Power Authority Uniondale headquarters to speak out against LIPA’s tax lawsuit against the town. Roughly 100 of the group’s 2,700 members showed up for the protest. LIPA is seeking through the courts a 90 percent reduction in the $82 million in property taxes paid annually for National Grid’s Northport power plant. While court dates are still pending, LIPA spokesman Sid Nathan has stated in an email that the power authority is actively hoping to settle the case. A settlement, he estimates, would cost the average Northport resident $13 a year. But the group maintains opposition to settling with LIPA, saying the power authority is representing the interests of a foreign for-profit corporation. “This is a zero-sum game,” said Paul Darrigo, the group’s organizer. “It represents a transfer of the tax levy from a large corporation to Long Islanders already struggling with taxes and
the loss of the [state and local taxes, aka SALT] deduction. We are largely a middle-class community, and the deal that LIPA is seeking has no discernible benefit to Long Islanders, despite the political value that comes from being able to say electric bills will go down.” The Northport power plant’s 244-acre waterfront site, protesters say, is not overassessed. “Northport has hosted this highly valuable piece of New York State’s power puzzle for decades and agreed to do so based on a promise made to the community in good faith that it would be honored into the future,” Darrigo said. The group blames LIPA’s financial woes on the 1997 Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant bailout. LIPA’s long-term debt as of Dec. 31, 2018, is estimated to be $8.2 billion. Immediately following the rally, some protesters caravanned to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s (D) office in Hauppauge to seek his support. Bellone, they state, did not

make himself available for a meeting, despite repeated calls to his office over several days. “While we do not comment on pending litigation, county spokeswoman Marykate Guilfoyle said, “It is our sincere hope that LIPA and the Town of Huntington can reach a mutual agreement that is fair and beneficial to all parties.”

Your Turn: How we can defeat LIPA BY MICHAEL MARCANTONIO DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Friends, neighbors and allies: The following statement may initially shock you, but by the end of this post, I suspect, and sincerely hope, you’ll agree with it: LIPA does not want to win this lawsuit. Here’s why: The Northport Power Station is worth billions because it generates billions in revenue and is also essential to LIPA’s entire operation. How can we possibly know this? Let’s look at some basic facts about the plant: • National Grid bought KeySpan Energy, whose largest asset was the Northport power plant, for $7.3 billion in 2007. The purchase agreement, which is publicly available on the SEC’s website, lists Keyspan as having three primary assets: The E.F. Barrett Plant, the Far Rockaway Plant and the Northport Power Station. The E.F. Barrett Plant, at maximum capacity, can only produce up to 669.2 megawatts of power; the Far Rockaway Plant only 100 megawatts. The Northport Power Station produces at full capacity 1,600 megawatts of power — making it a plant that has over double the power-generating capacity (and therefore value) of the other two. Does LIPA really expect us to believe that the plant has lost 97.5 percent of its value since 2007? Please. • The Northport Power Station provides natural gas on Long Island and the Bronx from the Iroquois Pipeline — a 416-mile natural gas pipeline that stretches from Canada to the Northport Power Station. How much do you think that is worth, especially with the explosion of natural gas use over the last decade? • The Northport Power Station is one of the only two North American hubs of the FLAG Atlantic 1 cable. What is the FLAG Atlantic 1 cable, you may ask? It’s a 10,000-mile submarine fiber optic cable line that stretches across the Atlantic Ocean’s sea floor from Europe to Long Island, reportedly transmitting 99 percent of the internet data between our two continents. The FLAG Atlantic 1 cable connects at the Northport Power Station — the only place in the region with the energy capacity to process
and connect the data delivered into the domestic internet grid. Financial transactions between Wall Street and London, Brussels, Paris, Germany, etc., can be delivered via this cable. How much do you think Northport Power Station’s contract with the FLAG Atlantic 1 cable is worth? • Of Long Island’s two offshore oil terminal platforms, the Northport Power Station is the largest, consisting of an unloading platform, two mooring platforms and mooring buoys where petroleum is delivered. • The Northport Power Station consists of three 11-mile-long submarine electric cables crossing the Long Island Sound that carry up to 300 megawatts of electricity to New England. How much do you think that arrangement is worth? • And perhaps most importantly, LIPA cannot maintain the power grid on Long Island without the Northport Power Station. This is not my opinion; this is from the court documents, which state: “Northport Power Station is a vital component of the electric generation grid on Long Island. Long Island is within the New York Independent System Operator Zone K. Inside Zone K LIPA has to maintain an ongoing reserve capacity of 107% of peak demand. Northport Power Station is an integral part of LIPA’s ability to meet the ISO mandated reserve requirements — without it, LIPA would fall short of its reserve capacity requirements and Long Island would suffer power brown-outs and black-outs” (Source: Pre-Trial Memorandum, Index No. 068404/2014). You mean to tell me that LIPA thinks a plant so valuable that, without it, it could not provide power to its 1.1 million energy customers on Long Island, is worth a mere $200 million? LIPA knows this, and so does National Grid, which is why National Grid bought the plant for $7.3 billion in 2007 in the first place. The Northport Power Station is a gold mine, generating potentially billions in revenue every year — billions that are funneled overseas to a United Kingdom multinational instead of kept here on Long Island. And so, this brings me back to my original claim as to why LIPA and National Grid do not want to actually win the case: because if they win, that means the court will have declared
unequivocally that the Northport Power Station, a plant that was purchased (along with other minor assets) in 2007 by National Grid for $7.3 billion, is actually only worth $200 million. If that happens, then Huntington will be forced to initiate eminent domain proceedings and seize a multi-billion-dollar plant for a mere $200 million, per LIPA’s own valuation. If the judge sides with LIPA over Huntington and declares that the plant is worth only $200 million, LIPA’s hands are tied when Huntington then goes forward and takes the plant from National Grid for a mere $200 million. At that point, there’s not much it can say or do. It would be stuck with its own valuation of the plant that it produced in the tax certiorari case. But if LIPA doesn’t want to win the lawsuit, then why is it suing us? What does it want then? What LIPA wants is to settle. In sum, if we settle, LIPA wins everything it wants and takes our most effective counterpunch off the table. What this all means is: right now, in this moment, it is better to lose this lawsuit today than to settle this case. I know that sounds counterintuitive but hear me out: If we lose the lawsuit, we gain a favorable valuation for eminent domain proceedings that LIPA and National Grid will be unlikely to evade. You see, under eminent domain law, the town has the power to take whatever property it wants, for any public purpose, as long as it pays the property owner the “fair value” for that property. For properties considered “Specialty Assets” like the Northport power plant, both tax law and eminent domain law consider the proper method for determining “fair value” to be the “cost plus depreciation method.” Right now, LIPA’s lawyers are arguing in the tax certiorari case that (a) Northport power plant is a “Specialty Asset” and (b) New York law requires that specialty assets should be valued under the cost-plus depreciation method. Unwittingly, LIPA’s lawyers are doing our work for us in the eminent domain proceeding! (For the lawyers out there reading this, see, e.g., Matter of Suffolk Cty., 47 N.Y.2d 507, 392 N.E.2d 1236 (1979), handed down by the New York Court of Appeals). And so, when we take the plant, and LIPA then turns around

and argues that “actually” the plant is worth a lot more than $200 million, we can simply cite LIPA’s own expert opinions from its tax certiorari case as evidence of the value of the plant under the cost-plus depreciation method. Of course, LIPA could try to turn around and say, “We didn’t really mean it!” but it won’t work. Once we seize the plant, we hire PSE&G or some other firm (there are dozens) or a person to run the plant for the town. The only thing that changes is where the revenues of the plant go. Right now, they go overseas to National Grid in the UK. Once we take the plant, they go to Huntington. Huntington’s residents, in effect, become the plant’s shareholders. And shareholders get paid dividends: lower taxes, better schools, better infrastructure and much, much more. Stop worrying about the lawsuit. Worry about the settlement. Losing the lawsuit is also not going to end the lawsuit. Win or lose the suit in April, the suit will immediately be appealed, so the effects of the lawsuit are “stayed” (i.e., put on hold) until the appeal is concluded. And then when that appeal ends, the suit will likely be appealed again, up to the highest court in the state or even the federal courts. This will all take years, during which time, we start making moves to take the plant. LIPA is terrified of Huntington taking the plant, which is why we need to start seriously exploring this route now. What’s more, this option will effectively give us control over LIPA, since LIPA needs Northport Power Station to operate. This is why they’re fighting so hard to scare us into settling, and why they are so frustrated with our town for refusing to do so. Within 5 years, we could own a plant that would generate so much revenue for our community that we could potentially eliminate all of our property taxes and have the best funded schools, infrastructure and police in the state with enough money left over to start transitioning the plant to renewable energy resources to prepare for the future, among many other things. Or we can settle like Brookhaven. The choice is ours. Michael Marcantonio is a Northport resident. Accomplished students and compassionate professionals recognized at March board of education meeting
At Elwood Union Free School District’s March board of education meeting, two outstanding groups of students were recognized for their recent academic accomplishments, along with two outstanding Elwood Middle staff members who jumped into action, while showing such compassion, for a student in a recent moment of crisis. A group of Elwood-John H. Glenn research students were commended for receiving the Best Presenters award at the Northwell HospitalFeinstein Institute’s annual Medical Marvels Competition. The team, advised by Arnold Kamhi, included Sasha Jamal, Julia Mady-Aguiar, Devin Lee, Rithika Narayan, Brennan
Finnegan and Jake Haddad, and each student was presented with a certificate from the board for this accomplishment. John Glenn’s Mock Trial team, also known as Knight Court, was recognized by the board for making it to Suffolk County’s Elite Eight round of the New York State Mock Trial Tournament. Additionally, along with students being commended for their incessant efforts to honing their advocacy skills, team adviser Megan Geiser was honored for her dedication to the team and helping them reach the Elite Eight for the past four years in a row. Lastly, Elwood Middle School Assistant Principal Dawn Valle and nurse Lisa McNamara were

Exploring American Sign Language at John H. Glenn
Elwood-John H. Glenn’s American Sign Language program has been steadily growing through the years — starting with one small class and now boasting more than 90 students across three high school levels and one college level. Students enjoy having this language to explore and are vocal about the importance and necessity of having people who can interpret for hearing-impaired individuals. “People are often inclined to gravitate toward taking Spanish because that seems like a more practical route to take,” said Megan Hovanec, a level-two ASL student, “but that’s not necessarily the case. With the amount of deaf Americans in our country, ASL is something that everyone should have a
basic knowledge of.” Hovanec plans to double major in interpreting and nursing in college so she can use ASL in the medical field. The community of ASL students at John H. Glenn enjoy giving back to the deaf community each year by volunteering at the Fall Festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, participate in districtwide events like International Night, and put on some of their own events, such as ASL Idol. “Sometimes all it takes is someone setting an example of something they’re passionate about,” said level-four ASL student Victoria Didiego. “I used to practice signing with my cousin because she studied it in college, and now I want to pursue full time interpreting.”

Blue Devils lose to Mad Dogs, 10-9 BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Middle Country boys lacrosse team trailed by one goal against the visiting Huntington Blue Devils going into the fourth quarter, but the Mad Dogs managed to retie the game 9-9. With one minute left in regulation, Middle Country’s Kaleb Pullis answered the call when he blasted a shot that stretched the net for the game winner defeating the Blue Devils, 10-9, March 28. Topping the scoring charts for Huntington was Jack Krisch, who split the pipes four times. Liam Hassett scored twice and Pat Durand, Jordan McCoy and Dan Danziger each found the
back of the cage. State lawmakers plan major MTA overhaul For far too long, the Metropolitan Transit Authority has been a faceless organization, with Long Island Rail Road riders paying for overpriced tickets while receiving subpar service. For years, more than 300,000 daily LIRR riders have been subjected to late or canceled trains, misinformation, overcrowded trains cars and derailments, with no strategy on how to remedy the problems. A few years ago, the LIRR undertook major emergency repair and construction work, dubbed the “Summer of Hell,” for the wide-ranging train cancellations and modified schedules as a result. The real problem? For most commuters, BY JAMES it’s delayed trains, lack of accurate communication about schedule changes, and a standing-room-only rush hour commute. The LIRR does not have even one spare train car, so if a train car is taken out of service, is sent out for maintenance or has a problem, there is no replacement or spare car to use in its place. Stop and think about that for a second, for the 300,000 Long Islanders who ride the LIRR every day, the MTA has such poor long-term planning that they do not even
have one spare train car. The LIRR and MTA’s administrative bodies — and the budgets that pay for them — are massive, but the notion of keeping extra inventory for emergencies fails register on their radar. That must change. The new state Senate Majority, which includes six members from Long Island, are committed to changing the MTA’s status quo. And this is why we introduced the MTA RAIL Act — a five-point platform to overhaul the MTA and provide real accountability and reform. The RAIL Act will require the MTA to conduct an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s GAUGHRAN procurements to examine if there is fraud, negligence, anti-competitive conduct, bid rigging, wasteful spending or sufficient internal controls. It will also examine the MTA’s overuse of outside contractors, because far too many projects are being outsourced to overpriced contractors and not done by in-house workers. The MTA should be utilizing one of the best trained work forces in the nation — their rankand-file union members — many of whom have the expertise, skill set and depth needed
to complete tasks that the MTA far too often chooses to outsource to outside consultants. This audit will be unique in that it will be conducted wholly independent of the MTA’s administration. We cannot expect an agency whose leadership has allowed such waste and mismanagement to further police itself, too. Another key component of the MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the way the MTA analyzes itself. Current performance metrics do not provide adequate information about the system’s actual performance or delivery of services. Improved data collection and sharing on-system performance and service delivery could yield significant improvements with simple changes like modernizing definitions used by the MTA. The MTA RAIL Act will finally give riders a voting voice by reforming and modernizing the antiquated voting system that puts too much emphasis on administration, and not enough on the daily riders. For the first time, riders will have a voting member on the MTA board. The MTA board would no longer be able to ignore the concerns of 300,000-plus daily LIRR riders. In addition to giving riders a real voice on the MTA’s 20-member board, the MTA RAIL Act gives the member representing the paratransit ridership a voting voice, so that individuals with physical impairments — who are subjected to inaccessible train service
and long, difficult commutes — are fairly represented on the board. Every couple of years, the MTA issues a dire warning to legislators about its desperate need for a massive influx of capital funding. There are two serious problems with their cries for help. The first is that there is no real accountability as to where the funding goes and how it is spent. That’s what a forensic audit will address. The second is a real lack of long-term capital planning by MTA leadership. The MTA RAIL Act will require the MTA to set forth, every five years, a 20-year capital investment plan. This will ensure there is a long-term plan to address projected future needs and trends, and examine long-term capital investments. The MTA has spent a lot of time asking lawmakers for additional funds to, quite literally, keep the trains running. The MTA also recently voted to raise fares on the hardworking LIRR riders who already pay hundreds of dollars each month for their commute. The public deserves to know where that money is going and what the MTA is spending that money on. Every ... last ... penny. That’s why my Senate colleagues and I pushed for the passage of this bill. The New York State Senate passed April 1 legislation that will overhaul the Metropolitan Transit Authority and transform its operations. The legislation, included in the 2019-20 New York State budget, authorizes into law key changes to increase MTA transparency and reform its operations. This includes a comprehensive, independent forensic audit of MTA, improvements to long-term capital planning, and requires public reporting on MTA performance metrics. New York State Sen. James Gaughran (D-Northport) said that he aggressively lobbied for passage of these reforms and committed himself to their inclusion in the final state budget. “I am thrilled that this year’s budget will include a core component of the MTA Rail Act: a comprehensive, independent forensic audit of the MTA,” he said. “This, coupled with a $1 billion investment into the LIRR, are critical first steps toward making Long Island’s mass

transit finally work for riders.” The reforms were also supported by railroad watchdogs and public transit commuters, fed up by years of late trains, poor communication by the MTA and rising train fares. “The biggest complaint I hear is overcrowding as a result of cars taken out of
service,” said Larry Silverman, former chair of the LIRR Commuter Council. “Monies have already been allocated for the expansion projects such as East Side Access and Third Track Main Line, so I would expect that the railroad would use the funds to keep the system in a state of good repair.”
Larry Penner, former Federal Transit Administration director in the New York region, is familiar with MTA operations, capital projects and programs. The devil, he said, is in the missing details yet to be worked out concerning passage of congestion pricing and the MTA Rail Act. The promised MTA “forensic audit” in his view is a waste of time and money. “Another audit will not result in significant change,” Penner said. “How many internal MTA, MTA Office of the Inspector General, state comptroller, city controller, NYC Office of Management and Budget, Federal Transit Administration OIG and other audits have come and gone.” The best bang for the buck, he said, is for the Long Island Rail Road to further electrify rail service for five branches: Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay, Montauk, Ronkonkoma and the central branch which runs between Hicksville, Bethpage and Babylon. Investing in a one-seatride service to Penn Station, and eventually Grand Central, would benefit the most people.

Imagine a sad story behind a vanity license plate
I
appreciate the joy of vanity license plates. They are like small puzzles that allow me to ponder their meaning while I await two or three traffic lights so I can turn left. Sometimes they are like good movies or artwork, allowing readers to come up with their own interpretation. My wife and I will ask each other what the combination of letters and numbers mean, D. None offering various guesses as if we of the above were on a game BY DANIEL DUNAIEF show, trying to figure out whether the letters are a message or the celebration of a successful stock that made it possible for the
person to buy that lovely car. They can reveal a car owner’s passions, for skiing, golf or for a particular person. They can also suggest how someone got the car, where the person with the car came from or how many people are in a family. Recently, I came to a traffic light and read a license plate that suggested a sad story. In an inconspicuous maroon car that I would have otherwise overlooked, the license plate had a message of animosity. Wow, I thought. Who would advertise an identity linked to hatred? How sad that each time the person got in the car, the license plate reinforced his or her antipathy. What could have happened that made anger so much more important than any other message or than a random collection of letters and numbers? Then again, maybe it’s the internet’s fault. Traveling along the internet superhighway, people can’t resist sharing their disdain for everyone and everything. Maybe the anger that follows us
on roads and on the heavily trafficked internet world has converged, blending into one laser-like beam of focused enmity. Then again, that’s probably a sociological cop-out. More likely, the car owner, whom I will call Joe, has a life-defining story he’s sharing through this license plate. Joe may have loved someone deeply and for years. He made plans about where they’d live, how many kids they’d have, what they’d do on weekends and where they’d take this small joy mobile on vacations. One day, however, she arrived at a prearranged dinner at a diner. She looked different. Her hair was longer and had been straightened. Instead of her worn North Face jacket, she was wearing a designer coat. Her purse, which Joe noticed when she placed it delicately on the table as if it were made of glass, had also changed. “Hey,” Joe offered. “You look so different. What’s up?” “I am different,” she smiled behind lipstick
someone else had clearly applied. When she refused the bread she usually wolfed down, Joe became nervous. “What’s different?” “I won the lottery. I’m thinking of changing everything about my old life.” “How much did you win?” a suddenly excited Joe asked. “How much is irrelevant. I’ve decided to give you a parting gift. I’m going to buy you a new car.” Joe didn’t know what to say. A car wasn’t what he wanted or expected. Then again, he didn’t want to walk away empty handed. When it came time to pick out a license plate, Joe wanted just the right way to express his frustration over what could have been. He tried options the DMV denied. Finally, he came up with a message that encapsulated a road not taken for his life and his car. Joe regularly drives past the home of the former love of his life, hoping she notices him and the message on his license plate: EVEIH8U.
What fine restaurant dining means to me
A
friend mentioned an article he had seen that asked the question, “What’s the best restaurant if you’re over 50?” and proceeded to ask me the same question. Now he well knows that I am over 50, and he also knows I eat in restaurants, sometimes for business and occasionally as a social event. In fact, as we have gotten older, my friends and I seem to do less cooking each year and Between more splurging on you and me dinners out when BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF we get together. So it was a relevant question in more ways than one. I don’t know what the article he was referring to concluded, but
I can tell you what is important to me when I dine in a restaurant. First and most critical is the food. It is certainly not the ambience or even the picturesque location. Those last are pleasant enough, but the quality and taste of the meal are most vital. I like food that I would describe as, for lack of a better term, clean. That means the ingredients should be allowed to speak for themselves and should not be buried under cheese or slathered on top with butter. Both of those can make food taste good, but unless the dish particularly calls for those ingredients, they should not drown the main offering. I also like seasoning but again not with a heavy hand. To my mind, a heavily spiced meal knocks out my taste buds. But I know lots of people, even a couple of my sons, like their food “hot.” For me, it is fun to try and analyze what spice or combination of spices make the food so tasty. Sometimes I can tell; sometimes I have to beg the answer from the chef, and surprisingly the answer is usually forthcoming. And sometimes I bring along a dear

friend, who is herself a celebrated chef, to sleuth out the mystery. I don’t have a large capacity for food at one sitting, so I frequently bring home half the meal to eat the next day. That not only makes me feel economical but also not wasteful, and I especially like a meal that will still be tasty when it is reheated. Not all dishes are up to that challenge, but occasionally one, like chicken, will be even better after it has lolled around in its spices in my fridge for 24 hours. When I go out to a restaurant with other people, I need to hear them when they speak. I also do not care to shout while I am chewing. That means it has to be reasonably quiet wherever we are eating. And unless the experience is deliberately family style, which can be fun, I don’t care to be stuffed into a crowd of diners. A moderate distance between tables is nice. So is a comfortable chair. I try not to be interested in the conversation at the next table — although there have been a few exceptions to which I will

admit — and a little privacy is welcome. That also helps to keep the ambience low key. Ditto for the background music, if there is such. I am not looking to have my large intestine jitterbug during a meal. Finally, it is pleasant to have a waiter or waitress who is not conspicuously weighed down by the problems of the world. Although I well understand that being a server in a restaurant is one of the hardest jobs, because pleasing so many different people with so many individual tastes has to be challenging, I prefer not having to deal with someone cranky or impatient. It is helpful when servers introduce themselves by name because it facilitates getting their attention and nicely personalizes the service in both directions. And I feel the tip ought not be an automatic percentage. That’s just a minimum. Exceptional service should be acknowledged in the one way that is most meaningful. That person after all is earning his or her bread, even as we are eating ours.

What breast diagnostic and screening procedures does St. Catherine offer? A. We perform all forms of screening and diagnostic breast imaging at our Women’s Health and Outpatient Diagnostic Pavilion. These services include mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs and all forms of biopsy. We also offer 3D mammography, which provides better visualization of the breast.During standard 2D mammography, the radiologist may need to call the patient back in for a follow-up screening if the results are inconclusive or point to a possible malignancy. Because of the improved visualization of 3D mammography, we can reduce call back rates, which provides more convenience, lower cost and less anxiety for patients.
How often should women be screened for breast cancer? A. Early diagnosis is key to breast cancer survival, so the best thing patients can do is schedule a mammogram once a year as early as age 40. For those with family history or a higher risk of breast cancer, earlier screenings may be recommended. We also offer genetic testing and counseling for high-risk patients. We recommend these patients follow an alternating biannual mammogram and MRI schedule and to follow-up with breast exams twice a year. What treatment options are available for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer? A. An overwhelming majority of women with breast cancer will require surgery at some point— either before or after chemotherapy or radiation therapy. We offer the latest surgical techniques, including partial and bilateral mastectomies, as well as breast reconstruction using implants or autologous flap microsurgical procedures. These procedures use donor tissue from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen or thigh, to reconstruct the breast, which may be favorable or necessary in certain patients.
