Man crashes into house

Suffolk County Police and the Huntington Fire Department responded to a car crash last Saturday night, Feb. 20, just after 9:10 p.m.

A male driver crashed a white Jeep Cherokee into a residence on Creek Road in Huntington, according to police, who said the crash has been deemed noncriminal.

The driver was transported to

Huntington Hospital, according to authorities, and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Chief Jesse Cukro led the charge with the Huntington Fire Department, who responded with a fire engine and a heavy rescue truck. The Huntington Building Department also responded to assess the structural damage of the house.

Edward McGuire first joined the Centerport Fire Department in 1976.

C’port FD loses ex-captain Ex-Captain Edward McGuire of the Centerport Fire Department died on Feb. 2 at the age of 78.

McGuire first joined the department in 1976, serving first as lieutenant and then captain. He also served as an EMT and member of the Centerport Rescue Squad.

He was elected as fire commissioner in 1995 and served for five years.

The ex-captain grew up in Queens and worked summers as a lifeguard at Jones Beach. He also served in the U.S. Army at a Nike missile site in New Jersey.

After his tour ended, he attended Cooper Union, a prestigious college in New York City.

McGuire taught classes at a BOCES school but was an electrician by trade and started McGuire Electric in Centerport, which his son Edward McGuire now operates.

McGuire loved the outdoors, including activities like fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores; his children, Edward, Joseph, Judy and Christopher; and his seven grandchildren.

Ethics Board gets two new members By alEx pEtroski

The Huntington Town Board of Ethics & Financial Disclosure added its final two members last week, bringing the committee back to its full size after a few years of vacant seats.

Sam Miller and Sheryl Randazzo, who are both Huntington residents, joined the Ethics Board at a Feb. 10 town board meeting, and said they are eager to contribute.

“I view it as community service,” Randazzo said in a phone interview.“I’ve been involved professionally with matters of ethics my entire adult life. I’m looking forward to it.”

Randazzo is a practicing attorney with offices in Huntington and Manhattan. She is a former president of the Suffolk County Bar Association.

Miller, on the other hand, is the vice chair of the Huntington Arts Council. He also has about 30 years of experience in public service positions related to human rights, housing and community development, including a stint on the board of commissioners of the Huntington Housing Authority.

“It’s humbling,” Miller said in a phone interview, about serving on the Ethics Board.

“I love the town and citizens dearly.”

and Heller resigned after writing a letter to the board saying he spends most of his time in Florida. Edward William Billia filled one of the vacancies in 2015, but a third opened up when Dean Howard Glickstein resigned. The board hasn’t had five members since 2014.

Throughout the last year, the community has voiced concerns about aspects of the Ethics Board, including how often they meet and their level of transparency with

the public. Changes were made as a result of those criticisms, increasing meetings to four times a year rather than once annually and comprehensively updating the code of conduct for town employees.

“I welcome these two distinguished Huntington residents to the Ethics Board and thank them for their willingness to serve,” Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) said in a press release. “I look forward to their efforts

in implementing the provisions of the Town’s new ethics code.”

Randazzo believes her career path has given her a perfect foundation to serve on the Ethics Board.

“Before law school, issues pertaining to ethics have always been something that I’ve focused on,” she said. “I think the fit is that it has been at the forefront of my professional career.”

Randazzo also said she does not have any specific agenda in mind heading into her new position, and she will take the issues and challenges as they come.

According to Miller, his past professional experiences should provide him with a helpful viewpoint, despite being brand new to the job.

“I’m going in, as Clyde Frazier always says, a neophyte,” Miller said laughing, giving a nod to the colorful New York Knicks television announcer.

But Miller finds his new role to be an important one.

“I think that one of the things that we’re always looking for in a civil society is civility,” he said. “Our abilities to settle differences and to bring commonalities to people would help to resolve a lot of issues.”

Cox also said that the money from this bond does not expire and can be carried into the next school year. So if Harborfields does not use its full amount immediately, it does not lose the surplus.

Going forward, Cox said this plan

Motorcyclist rides for vets, to honor son

For one man, riding isn’t just a way of life — it’s a way to honor his son.

Bruce Blanco, president of the American Legion Riders Chapter 1244, first got involved with the American Legion in 2010, after his son, Michael Edward Blanco, a lance corporal in the United States Marines, passed away on Feb. 15, 2010.

“I am living in the eyes of my son,” Blanco said in a phone interview. “He is my hero.”

Blanco, a Commack resident, said that whenever his son was on leave he would lend a hand to local organizations like the American Legion, so Blanco “took over the things he would do,” once his son passed.

The American Legion Riders started in 1993, when American Legion members decided they wanted to create an environment where members could come together to share their love of motorcycles. Blanco described the American Legion Riders as “riding billboards for veterans,” that help bring attention to and raise money for veteran events.

Blanco, who has been president for the

past year, said that through the organization he has been able to spend time with veterans, play bingo or share a meal, stood in as family for burial services when a veteran had no other family left, and raised money to provide veterans and their families with meals for the holidays. According to Blanco, in the last year alone, the riders were present at more than 100 military funerals. They also participate in local celebrations like the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parades in Huntington and King’s Park, and organize welcome homes from the airport.

According to Blanco, his chapter only has 24 members, but provide at least 150 different missions each year for veterans.

They are one of only three rider posts in Suffolk County, and he said they are the most active chapter in New York State.

One of his fondest memories with the riders thus far, was fulfilling a wish of a veteran in his early 90s, who had always wanted to ride a motorcycle.

“We had all of his family and friends out to see him,” he said. “It was just a really nice day.”

Blanco said he thinks the organization is so important because it reminds veterans that they are not alone.

“We show vets love and give them the support they deserve,” he said. “When you have veterans who think they’re alone and then we can be there for them, that makes my day.”

He said he has seen some American Legion posts lose support and membership in the past few years. Some were even forced to close their doors.

“I never want to see this disappear,” he said. “The riders are trying to bring attention to what the American Legion does, and help to try and make it grow.”

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund recently honored Blanco for the $1,000 donation he and the riders fundraised for in 2015.

Keeping the state’s drinking water clean and safe is a subject anyone can get behind, and New York lawmakers across both major parties did just that.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo introduced a series of aggressive water quality initiatives last week in the company of elected officials representing the North Shore in an attempt to better protect public health and the environment. His proposals received great praise from both Democrats and Republicans as a common-sense way to keep New York’s water clean.

“Every New Yorker has a fundamental right to clean and safe drinking water,” Cuomo said. “Water is a priceless resource that requires the highest levels of protection, and I am proud to continue this administration’s legacy of standing up for the environment. We are taking aggressive and proactive steps to ensure clean and healthy communities throughout the state — both for current residents and for generations to come.”

Joining Cuomo at a Stony Brook University discussion on the state’s newest water initiatives were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D), state Sen. John Flanagan (REast Northport), state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) and more. At that discussion, Cuomo pitched his statewide water quality rapid response team, which he said would work to identify and develop plans to address critical drinking water contamination concerns as well as groundwater and surface water contamination problems.

“It’s imperative that we all work together at the local, state and federal levels to protect the public health,” Bellone said. “The actions that Governor Cuomo has announced today are demonstrating unequivocally that New York is taking proactive measures to not just meet that standard, but to really raise the bar on the protection of water quality.”

Cuomo said the rapid response team would be working to develop a comprehensive action plan to immediately address water quality issues raised by municipalities and concerned citizens, taking on matters ranging from currently regulated contaminants like lead, to emerging contaminants, like perfluorooctanoic acid. It was a plan that his fellow lawmakers said was easy to get behind.

“We are blessed in New York State and on Long Island to have the availability of high-quality drinking water, but we also have a responsibility to protect it,” Flanagan said.

“At the end of the day, nothing is more important to New Yorkers and their families than the air they breathe and the water they drink.”

The team will also review and incorporate the best available science and may include new review standards for currently unregulated contaminants, enhanced testing and oversight of drinking water systems, including private wells, and state-of-the-art drinking water treatment options.

“Creating an agenda to safeguard the quality of Long Island’s water source is great news — not only for the health of New Yorkers — but for the environment as well,” Englebright said. “Governor Cuomo’s work to ensure that every New Yorker has access to safe, clean drinking water is a testament to his commitment to statewide public health. The implementation of a water quality rapid response team is a proactive way to protect the environment from harmful water contamination and keep New Yorkers’ drinking water clean and safe.”

The discussion over drinking water came in the weeks following a horrific drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan, where officials have been scrambling to combat unsafe and potentially life-threatening water contaminations.

The governor also proposed regulations to be imposed on mulch-processing facilities to safeguard natural resources.

Cuomo said the Department of Environmental Conservation would propose for public comment draft regulations for mulch facilities to increase oversight and provide enhanced safeguards. The proposed regulations would require facilities to establish water runoff management plans to protect groundwater and place restrictions on pile size and storage to reduce the risk of fires, odor and dust.

Plane crashes into harbor

Police are combing through the region where Port Jefferson Harbor and Setauket Harbor meet, near Poquott, after a small plane crashed there late Saturday night, authorities said.

The small plane, which police said was a Piper PA-28 carrying four people, went down shortly after 11 p.m. near the vicinity of 108 Van Brunt Manor Rd., Poquott Mayor Dee Parrish said. An extensive response from emergency personnel followed, during which three people were recovered from the water — but one remained missing, and that search was ongoing through the beginning of

this week, officials reported.

Police said on Sunday that a student pilot, 25-year-old Bronx resident Austricio Ramirez, was flying the plane when engine problems arose and turned the controls over to his instructor, 36-yearold Queens resident Nelson Gomez, who landed the plane in the harbor.

All the passengers in the four-seater plane were able to exit into the water, after which Ramirez, Nelson and passenger Wady Perez, a 25-year-old from Queens, were rescued by police.

But Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said the search and rescue operation remained in effect for one missing person, who was identified

A 44-year-old man from Kings Park was arrested on Feb. 19 at 7:15 a.m. on Larkfield Road in East Northport after police said he called a woman and harassed her on Dec. 22. He was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment.

Police said a 28-year-old man from Springfield Gardens was using fake identification to open a new credit card on Feb. 19 at Saks Fifth Avenue in Huntington. According to police, he had a fake driver’s license and credit card, which he used to apply for a Saks Fifth Avenue credit card and then buy $3,500 worth of merchandise. He was charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

OBITUARIES Margaret Petrone Margaret Petrone, 97, passed away on Jan. 30 in Setauket.

She was born Margaret Elizabeth Howell Pittman in Holland, Va., on Dec. 26, 1918. Her parents were Wilmer Pittman and Erma Riedel.

She graduated from James Madison University in 1939 and worked as a schoolteacher in Tappahannock, Va. She met and married Jerry Petrone of Huntington Station in 1941. Together they had four sons: Robert Michael, John, Jeffrey and Richard.

Her son Jeffrey died as an infant.

Petrone assembled airplanes during World War II. She was also a musician who played the piano. She was also a fitness enthusiast and insisted on drinking eight glasses of water a day.

In the early 1960s, she returned to teaching at Jefferson Elementary School in Huntington and retired in 1985. Her husband Jerry passed away in 1996.

Despite living in New York for 70 years, Petrone never lost her proper Virginia accent or genteel southern disposition.

She is survived by her three sons and two grandsons, Ian Ericksen and Justin

Petrone, as well as six great-grandchildren, Liam, Madeleine, Emma Ericksen, Marta, Anna and Maria. A third grandchild, Jennifer, predeceased her.

Petrone was laid to rest on Feb. 4 at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Huntington.

Richard Capobianco Richard K. “Dick” Capobianco passed away on Feb. 20, from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was 78.

His wife Sidnee and sons, Christopher and Andy, in addition to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive him.

He was the third of 17 children, born in 1937 to Fred and Wilena Capobianco of Glen Cove. He was an avid boater and skier, a member of the Northport Yacht Club and an active member of the East Northport Rotary Club.

Dick was part of a family that is well established in the floor-covering industry on Long Island. His grandfather Antonio founded Glen Floors in 1932. Antonio’s son Peter founded Cappy’s Carpets in Port Jefferson in 1946 and son Fred continued at Glen Floors. Eventually, a number of Fred’s children became active in the business and still are. Peter Jr. operates Cappy’s Carpets today.

The momentum shifted Islip’s way as the Buccaneers surged ahead 43-34 with 4:51 left in regulation. Back in action, junior Christiana de Borja banked her second trey of the game to help her team draw with six points, but her defensive pressure was muted, as her next foul would be her last. Juniors Grace Zagaja and Kate Tardo also fouled out. De Borja finished with a team-high 11 points, while senior Angela Deren and junior Falyn Dwyer added eight points apiece, and sophomore Erin Tucker followed close behind them with seven.

After graduating from Glen Cove High School in 1955, Dick served in the U.S. Navy and returned to start a career in floor-covering sales at the Hicksville Glen Floors store. One of the other salesmen, Fred Hughes, introduced Dick to his daughter, Sidnee.

The two fell in love and were married in 1958. Fred Hughes left Glen Floors in 1959 and started his own business, Fred’s Carpet in East Northport.

In 1971, he retired and sold the business to Dick and Sid. Eventually, their sons, Christopher and Andy, became active in the business and Andy and his wife Marianne operate the store today. Christopher left the company in 1992, staying in the industry in architectural sales, technical support and journalism.

Arrangements were entrusted to Brueggemann Funeral Home in East Northport. A funeral service was held at Union United Methodist Church in East Northport and interment followed at Locust Valley Cemetery.

The No. 3-seeded Half Hollow Hills West boys’ basketball team took advantage of No. 2 Northport’s early foul trouble, which left star senior center Lukas Jarrett benched for most of the first half with two personal fouls.

By the time he returned to the Stony Brook University court for the

second half of the Suffolk County Class AA semifinal matchup, the Tigers’ 31-20 deficit only continued to grow. Northport had finished the season undefeated in League II, at 14-0, and only suffered one loss this season, a 70-48 defeat at Baldwin.

The Tigers’ 72-47 loss on Sunday evening proved to be a similar-looking one, with the Colts coming up with big blocks and an array of 3-pointers to stifle Northport.

Serving those who served us

People who come home after serving our country overseas should not have to cope with mental illnesses stemming from their experiences, but the sad reality is that most veterans have seen or dealt with traumatic things. That means we have to do everything we can for those who return home with post-traumatic stress disorder.

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), an Iraq war veteran, is on the right track in addressing this. When he was in the state legislature, he established a peer program in which veterans could help one another battle mental issues, and now he is working to take that initiative to the national level.

Part of the reason this program is important is that it addresses the stigma surrounding mental illness. The shame people feel deters the average citizen from getting help, but think of how those feelings must be compounded in people who carry the weight of a reputation as one of our country’s bravest and strongest. And even without the fear of appearing weak, veterans have experienced many things others cannot truly understand if they have not served in the military. They need and deserve the support of people who have been in their shoes — people who know what they are going through. Mental illness is often woefully misunderstood as it is, so we must mitigate that as much as possible.

Ultimately, we would prefer more resources for military psychiatrists to better identify and treat issues with active servicemen, so they leave their PTSD or other mental or emotional problems overseas, but we will gladly support a national veterans’ peer program to assist those we have so far failed to help.

Reports of 150,000 penguin deaths are greatly exaggerated

ecent headlines, displayed prominently on news sites around the world, were alarming, such as: “150,000 Adélie penguins killed by iceberg.” The stories suggested our flightless blackand-white friends were cut off by a Rhode Island-sized iceberg from their food supply. It was too late to save the “Happy Feet” characters. But the reality was anything but black and white.

“These headlines, while eye-popping, are not necessarily true,” said Heather Lynch, an assistant professor in the Stony Brook University Department of Ecology and Evolution. The stories came from a recent study, published in Antarctic Science. Lynch did not participate in the study, but is involved in monitoring penguin populations from satellites. “This idea that [these] penguins have perished doesn’t reflect the biology in hand,” she said. It will take “many years” before scientists are able to sort out the effect of this iceberg on penguin survivorship.

That’s because penguins can take a year or two off from breeding during unfavorable environmental conditions, which means that penguins displaced from breeding by an iceberg aren’t likely dead.

The scientists in the original study were linking the change in the breeding penguin population at Cape Denison — the site of a research station for

famous Australian geologist and explorer Douglas Mawson about a century earlier — with the number of nesting pairs recorded after the arrival of iceberg B09B in 2010.

“There was some concern that there were dead chicks or frozen eggs at the site,” Lynch said.

“We need to be cautious about interpreting that as evidence of some kind of catastrophic mortality event. There’s extremely high chick mortality rate under normal circumstances. That is the cycle of life.”

Reports about penguins losing habitat, breeding grounds or access to food typically lead to the kind of questions that were central to the “Happy Feet” story: What role do humans have in the process and what action, if any, is necessary to save the birds?

Kerry-Jayne Wilson, the lead author on the study and the chairperson of the West Coast Penguin Trust in New Zealand, offered some perspective.

“We did not suggest adult penguins had died,” she said

in response to an email request for comment. “Some media outlet started” this rumor.

She said she believes most of the missing penguins are probably “out at sea, having assessed conditions as unsuitable for breeding.”

The authors sent out a clarifying press release in response to the stories: “It is unlikely many, if any, adult penguins have died as a result of this stranding event. This iceberg stranding event only affects Adélie penguins in the Commonwealth Bay area; the millions of Adélie penguins breeding around the rest of Antarctica are not affected.”

So, where did the story go wrong? For starters, a press release announcing the study used the headline: “Giant iceberg decimates Adélie penguin colonies.” The statement suggests that breeding has declined in the area, without indicating that 150,000 of Mr. Popper’s pals perished.

Elizabeth Bass, director emerita of the center, suggested scientists needed to know their audience when sharing their research. “Be crystal clear about your findings,” she advised. In all the courses the center teaches, the message is to stress characterizing the work in a way that’s “not going to be misunderstood.”

Lynch is concerned that these type of stories, taken out of context, make it more difficult to share well-grounded science from future studies with policymakers.

“At some point, people stop listening and that’s what concerns me,” she said. “Real science whispers, it doesn’t shout.”

ast Friday, exactly 53 years ago to the day, a book was published that started by asking the question, “Is this all?” The book, written by Smith College graduate Betty Friedan, is called “The Feminine Mystique” and it is generally considered to have launched a revolution that

changed society in America and around the world.

Friedan based the book on a survey she did of her classmates at their 15th reunion in 1957, at which she asked her telling question. At that time women were assumed to be content with their lives if they had a husband, a home and children.

The answers she received proved otherwise. For this sample of women, that was resoundingly not enough, and from those answers and her own experience she began to advocate that women be educated not to get a husband but to be an individual.

To women today, this thesis seems obvious, but at the time of her book, Friedan’s message was greeted with astonishment.

She was overturning the role of women in society that had existed for pretty much all of recorded history.

Hardly, for I had recently graduated from a college whose president had repeatedly delivered that same message. When more women began to work and the idea of wives earning salaries became more acceptable, the two-paycheck families became the norm.

This in turn brought forth all sorts of new issues: latchkey children, gender equality in the workplace, redefinition of roles within marriage, glass ceilings, higher divorce rates, balancing work and family for women and men, the child care industry. All are familiar themes to us now.

In a way, my life and those of my contemporaries span the dramatic changes Friedan’s book and McIntosh spoke of, for we are living examples of those truths.

Harborfields struggled to find the rim in the first period, but down by two points with time expiring, junior forward Alex Merhige swished a buzzer-beating field goal to tie the game at 11-11.

Both teams traded points until deadlocked at 17-17 with just over four minutes left in the half. By the time the teams made their way to the locker room, East Hampton pulled ahead 23-19.

The scoreboard remained frozen for most of the third quarter, as both teams struggled to find the net. Harborfields held its opponent to just three points, a trifecta by Kyle McKee, who would make his presence known in the final quarter.

Harborfields senior guard Robert Pecorelli sparked a rally late in the period, netting eight points to put his team out front 29-26.

In a miscue, East Hampton inbounded the ball to a teammate who was standing out of bounds, which turned the ball over to the Tornadoes with just over four minutes remaining.

With his team leading by one point, Harborfields senior guard Malcolm Wynter hit a big 3-pointer, his second of the night, to help his team edge ahead 37-33. Pecorelli followed with a trey of his own that pushed the advantage to 40-36.

Wynter said he wasn’t surprised by East Hampton’s range and shooting prowess.

The No. 1-seeded Class A Tornadoes extended their winning streak to 19 games Tuesday, with a 63-48 Small School champion playoff win over No. 1-ranked Southampton, the Class B champion, at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus.

But first, on Friday night, Harborfields had to beat No. 2 East Hampton. After the Tornadoes led by 10 points, the Bonackers rallied back and, with a big 3-pointer, tied the game at 42-42 with a minute left in regulation at Suffolk County Community College’s Selden campus. Despite the scare, the Tornadoes were able to squeak out a 45-42 victory for the Suffolk County Class A title.

“I thought, ‘Why did I sign up for this job because it’s getting me gray and bald?’” Harborfields head coach John Tampori asked himself after the game was tied in the final minute. “But I have a lot of confidence in my guys, because they’ve been in games like this before.

We pushed up, we pressed to speed up the tempo of the game so we could get some easy shots, but these guys with their effort were amazing. Even when they couldn’t shoot the ball, they still found a way to score enough points.”

East Hampton’s McKee struck with another trey to make it a one-point game, but Merhige answered with a field goal that helped his team stay out front 42-39 with just over a minute left. “We’re all seniors and we stayed calm,” Pecorelli said. “We’ve been in that position before and we had a hard nonleague schedule especially when we played Elmont. So we stayed relaxed ran the offense that our coach puts in and knew we’d be fine. Hard work pays off, and our defense played really well tonight.”

With the clock winding down to seven seconds, Harborfields senior guard Alex Bloom, off a feed from Wynter, swished a 3-point shot to retake the lead, which would hold up at the buzzer.

Pecorelli notched up 13 points, with Merhige adding 11 and Wynter 10.

Then, on Tuesday, Harborfields defeated Southampton to win the Small School champion title.

Wynter scored a game-high 19 points, Bloom was close behind with 15 and Pecorelli tacked on 10. Morgan was close behind with nine points.

Harborfields travels to Stony Brook University on Friday to take on No. 3 Half Hollow Hills West, the Class AA champion, for the Section XI champion title at 8 p.m.
