Three men arrested in stabbing of Huntington teen Suffolk district attorney alleges defendants, current high school students, are known MS-13 gang members

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Three men arrested for allegedly stabbing a Huntington High School student last week are known MS-13 gang members who entered the country illegally and are students of Huntington High School, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini (D).

Ramon Arevalo Lopez, 19; Oscar Canales Molina, 17; and Nobeli Montes Zuniga, 20, were arrested by Suffolk County police Jan. 9 shortly after a 16-year-old male was stabbed during a large fight behind a Burger King, located on New York Avenue in Huntington Station. Each of the defendants is charged with one count of second-degree assault, a class D felony.

“While it is not clear what the groups were fighting about, one thing is clear: Everyone arrested are confirmed members of MS13,” Geraldine Hart, Suffolk County police commissioner said. “This incident is a reminder of the gang’s violent ways.”

Suffolk County police officers responded to a 911 call of a large fight involving approximately 15 high school-aged students in the rear parking lot of the Burger King at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Sini said a group of Huntington High School students went to the fastfood restaurant after school let out when they saw six Hispanic males staring at them in a “menacing way.”

The teens reportedly felt uncomfortable and left the store but were followed by the group of men that included the defendants.

The group allegedly charged and attacked the students while wielding bats and knives, according to Sini, stabbing one teen through the back and injuring a second individual.

The 16-year-old victim, whose identity was not released by police, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was treated for non-lifethreatening injuries.

Witnesses reported allegedly seeing the three defendants flee the scene in a black 2007 Toyota Scion with a large rear spoiler. Officers Guido, Indelicato and Rodriguez located a matching vehicle nearby at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to Hart, that contained Arevalo Lopez, Canales Molina and Montes Zuniga.

according to police. Sini said Arevalo Lopez made an admission to the arresting officers that he stabbed the teen, while Canales Molina and Montes Zuniga both allegedly admitted to police they were involved in the fight. Canales Molina had two knives on him at the time of his arrest, including a small one covered in blood found concealed in his boot, according the district attorney.

Each of the three defendants have been previously confirmed as MS-13 members by Suffolk County Police Department, according to Sini, and had records in the county’s gang database.

“What we know about MS-13 is that they use violence to — in their minds — ensure that they — Tim Sini are given respect,” he said. “Certainly, this type of incident fits within the modus operandi of MS13, which is essentially random and seemingly senseless acts of violence.”

Arevalo Lopez’s attorney, Jason Bassett of Hauppauge, strongly refuted all charges and the district attorney’s allegations that his client is or has been involved in gang activity.

He “ is not a MS-13 gang member,” Bassett said. “Just because he’s been a ‘confirmed’ member in an ill-conceived Suffolk County Police Department database isn’t proof of anything. He is innocent of the charges that have been leveled against him.”

Donation drives launched to aid federal employees

As the federal government shutdown drags into the fourth week, Huntington area boaters and elected officials have come together to help provide relief to furloughed federal employees and their families.

The Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs, which represents more than 20 boat and watercraft organizations, announced Jan. 10 a gift card donation drive to help the U.S. Coast Guard personnel who safeguard the waters of the Long Island Sound.

“Year-round the brave and dedicated men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard stand ready to respond to any emergency,” said Jackie Martin, executive officer of the boat council. “They continue to report to work even though they are not getting paid. They still have bills to pay and many have families to feed.”

Martin said the idea for a gift card drive came from her husband who previously served in the U.S. Navy.

She said he knew the Coast Guard personnel operating out of Eatons Neck and Hartford, Connecticut, are considered part of the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and, as a result, have not received a paycheck since the shutdown began Dec. 22.

“He remembered how tough it was to live from paycheck to paycheck,” she said. “When you have a young family and are trying to live paycheck to paycheck it’s difficult.”

Coast Guard staff has cut back on all nonessential services but must be available to respond to emergency situations. Some of its members travel from as far away as Jersey City to do four-day shifts at the base.

“There are people out there boating even in this weather,” Martin said.

“There’s commercial fisherman and clammers out on our waterways.”

In addition to gift cards, the boating council will accept monetary donations to purchase gift cards to be distributed among the Coast Guard by their respective commanders based on need.

Huntington’s boaters are not the only ones to have launched a donation drive in efforts to help out federal employees in need. New York State Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport) made one of his first acts of office Jan. 10 to announce a food and supplies drive alongside state Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, which has been shuttered by the government shutdown.

of time,” Gaughran said. “Federal workers on Long Island are now expected to choose between feeding their families or paying their mortgage.”

Gaughran and Lavine are working to set up a network of supermarket, business and offices to serve as collection sites for donations to go to federal employees. Items being collected include food, personal care items, common household supplies, pet food and gift cards. He stressed that due to state laws the elected officials and their offices cannot accept cash donations on behalf of federal workers.

Pachter, chief executive officer of Hauppauge-based Long Island Cares food bank, who stressed that winter is often the most difficult season with the agency already helping approximately 450 families. Resources are quickly becoming stretched thin.

Northport man launches campaign for Huntington town council

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A Northport millennial brazenly kicked off 2019 by kicking off his campaign to become a councilman in the Town of Huntington.

Michael Bento, 30, announced his intention to run for a seat on Huntington town board Jan. 3 while standing underneath the towers of the Northport power plant.

“I’m running as someone who grew up out here and now lives here with my wife and am hoping to raise a family here” Bento said. “I would like a Huntington that is not plagued by flooding, high taxes, corruption and has an infrastructure that can handle our cars.”

Bento said he spent his summers growing up at his grandparent’s house in Asharoken. He’s building a career working as a consultant for investment banking operations and corporate giving compliance.

A registered Democrat, the new candidate

said he’s been inspired watching the 2016 and 2018 election cycles where a larger number of young candidates ran for office. Bento said he has worked with the party on six campaigns in 2018, including canvassing for newly elected state Sen. Jim Gaughran (D-Northport).

“I’m running a people-centric campaign,” he said. “I am running to represent those people who have not been listened to by this or prior administrations.”

Bento said he plans to focus his campaign on his plan for bold, progressive infrastructural upgrades across the Town of Huntington to address widespread environmental issues.

Key to this proposal includes improving the area’s coastal resiliency plans, starting with rebuilding Asharoken’s seawall, improving bulkheads, replenishing dunes and creating a system of townwide stormwater drains to deal with roadway runoff, something he said can serve as a precursor for a future sewer system.

He wants to spotlight the issue of affordable

housing along with the need to be responsible in future development of Huntington.

“We should not have giant, looming buildings in downtown Huntington where roads and the parking infrastructure is already strained to the maximum,” Bento said. “We need to be responsible about this. Part of the reason people want to live and grow up in Huntington is its historic architecture and charm.”

The new candidate said he genuinely appreciates the town’s history. In 2017, Bento received his master’s degree in history with a focus on public policy from Queens College.

He’s suggested a shift away from apartment complexes toward tax incentives to purchasing property for low-income families.

Yet, the candidate said he recognizes there are political challenges in the months ahead.

The first being gaining enough name recognition to get on the ballot, as he could potentially face a primary opponent. He’s launched a Facebook page titled Michael P. Bento for

If elected, Bento said he will pledge to be a full-time councilman with no outside income or side jobs. He also plans to decline accepting any corporate donations.

“My job is to the people of Huntington, to the voters and that is one of the biggest things I can offer,” he said.

Huntington opens lottery for second affordable Harborfields home

More than 800 first-time homeowners will have a second chance at landing a contract to purchase an affordable home in Greenlawn.

After a successful housing lottery for Harborfield Estates last September, the Town of Huntington has begun accepting applications Jan. 15 from those interested in purchasing a second single-family home in the development.

First-time home buyers can file paperwork through Feb. 15 to place their names in the housing lottery for the four-bedroom, 2½-bathroom house priced at $350,125. The Greenlawn housing complex is a collection of 47 single-family homes on half-acre plots ordinarily starting at $800,000 each, according to the development’s website. A lottery will be held March 5 to choose at random an individual or family who will be offered the opportunity to purchase the property.

“Once again, a very lucky individual or family will have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful new home at an affordable price,” Leah Jefferson, director of the Huntington Community Development Agency, oversees the town’s Affordable Housing Program said in a press release. “Homeownership is the American dream, and the Community Development

Agency is looking forward to assisting someone with making that dream a reality.”

Lauren Lembo, Huntington’s spokeswoman, said the town had approximately 100 people who immediately signed up when the application process opened at midnight Jan. 15. The town received more than 800 applications for the first lottery house last summer.

“All of the people who signed up for the first lottery in September were notified, as they would have to sign up again for this one,

Lembo said. “We also notified past applicants and with the new income requirements, more people qualify.”

In order to qualify, those interested must be first-time homebuyers whom U.S. Housing and Urban Development defines as a person who has never owned a home, has not owned a home in the last three years or is a displaced homemaker. The purchaser must also provide documentation that their total income — including the salary of all adults age 18 and

older, overtime, bonuses, pensions, Social Security, tips, etc. — does not exceed 80 percent of the area’s average median income of $98,050 for a single individual, increasing to $140,500 for a family of four, in accordance with federal guidelines set by HUD. Lembo said all applicants must be able to secure a mortgage on their own. In addition to mortgage payments, the town has estimated potential owners will pay $9,700 annually in real estate taxes and $460 in homeowner association fees, which will be billed twice a year.

The two-story house constructed by developer Island Estate Homes will be a little more than 2,800 square feet and move-in ready by the fall 2019, according to Lembo. Priority will be given to applicants who are current residents or employed by a business located in the Town of Huntington, and nonresidents who can show they have relatives living in the Town of Huntington. Applicants who do not meet the criteria are welcome to enter the town’s affordable housing lottery as second priority.

Lembo said they have a computer set up in the CDA office at Town Hall and staff to assist if someone has trouble filling out the online application.

Suffolk County Police have arrested a man for allegedly using stolen credit cards.

Second Squad detectives, along with 5th and 6th Squad detectives, have been investigating more than a dozen cases of credit cards stolen from vehicles, several of which were located in gym parking lots. Some of the stolen credit cards were allegedly used to purchase gift cards, Apple watches and other items, police said.

An investigation by detectives from the 2nd, 5th and 6th squads identified the suspect as Stanley Roney, 37, of Brooklyn, who was arrested and charged with eight counts of grand larceny, 16 counts of criminal possession of stolen property and 10 counts of identity theft.

Residents alarmed by Commack Courtesy Inn fire drill

Bright orange flames and heavy smoke billowing up from a shuttered Commack motel on Saturday morning alarmed motorists and nearby residents who were unaware it was part of a preplanned fire training drill.

Commack Fire Department burned down the former Courtesy Inn, located at 1126 Jericho Turnpike, Jan. 12 with the property owner’s permission as the culmination of a two-week long intensive training exercise, Commissioner Pat Fazio said. The site needed to be cleared to make way for an approved 94-apartment complex for seniors age 55 and older. The location is being developed by TDG Commack, LLC. Residents dialed 911 and called local officials in a panic over the blaze, saying they were not given any notification.

“The community is incensed over it as they weren’t informed and there was a huge amount of smoke blowing over their houses,” Mark Stevens, of East Northport, said. “It was a huge fire and a huge mess.”

Stevens, who took photos of the blaze from a distance, said the distraction of the flames, along with heavy smoke, caused traffic to back

The fire department did not publish any notification to residents, according to the commissioner, because the event was well planned and controlled.

“It was a controlled burn at all times,” Fazio said. “No one was ever in danger. There was no danger to anyone’s home.”

The commissioner said fire department officials spoke with the property owners after the motel closed in November 2018 about razing the blighted building for training purposes. The property and vacated building, which he said has been blighted by drug issues and overdoses, offered its firefighters a unique learning experience.

“Training like this is priceless,” Fazio said.

“Often with fire education, we don’t get a lot of working fires.”

He said the fire department utilized each of the 50 hotel rooms to set up a wide variety of different training scenarios. Over two weeks, volunteers learned forced entry training on locked doors to get into a fire, how to safely breech walls to get to a fire or trapped individual, and observe how fires reacted in different environments.

During the week prior to the fire, Fazio said various state and federal agencies utilized the structure as well to train their personnel.

Nonprofits, food pantries work together to help WIC clients

Suffolk County officials are working to partner with food pantries and nonprofits to help ensure low-income women and children keep access to basic food and health care in the months ahead as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children undergoes a major change in the months ahead.

The county offices of the WIC program are closed Jan.14 for a week to upgrade to a debit card-based system, making the transition away from paper checks to electronic benefit transfer cards in accordance with New York State law.

The facilities will reopen Jan. 22 in limited capacity only to allow time for employee training and EBT card distribution to clients.

Suffolk officials expect the WIC program to be back up and running in April, but many are concerned that its recipients should have ready access to food and health care during the transition.

making sure babies and children in their youngest years are well fed and never face nutritional insecurities,” Rebecca Sanin, president and CEO of Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, said during a Jan. 10 press conference.

The council, Hauppauge-based Long Island Cares and Island Harvest of Bethpage have compiled a listing of food pantries in close proximity to WIC offices for families in need during the closure at www.hwcli.com/wic-closings.

WIC provides more than food for lowincome families, it also offers basic health care for children under age 5 including height,

weight, blood tests and iron levels. The program provides women and children with access to nutritional counseling, breastfeeding support and peer counseling.

“WIC sites are not only providers, they also serve as powerful community centers,” Sanin said. “Food security leads to lower infant mortality rates and safer pregnancies.”

Paule Pachter, president and CEO of nonprofit Long Island Cares, said he recognizes there are challenges ahead.

“When you are trying to provide food for mothers and babies, you are talking about some

of the most expensive food on the market,” Patcher said. “Formula, baby food, diapers, specialized food — this stuff is not readily available at the local food pantries.”

Many individuals rely on LI Cares and Island Harvest for these products.

“If the public doesn’t provide the food to the pantries, we don’t have them,” he said. “We’ve been preparing for this day for quite some time.”

As part of the preparations for the months ahead, LI Cares has made sure that mothers can have access to these vital products at their satellite locations in Freeport, Lindenhurst and Huntington Station.

The Hauppauge nonprofit also created mobile outreach units to go into the community to make residents aware of the ongoing closure and changes to the EBT system. They will be visiting Centereach, Bay Shore, Bohemia, Brentwood, Patchogue, Riverhead and Southampton.

Sanin said WIC agencies have worked very hard to get in contact with clients to pick up their checks in advance.

In addition, part of the new system will include the launch of a new smartphone app, WIC2Go, that will let clients track their benefits, find vendors and items.

“The new system will be much easier for clients,” Sanin said.

BY BILL LANDON The Harborfields varsity boys basketball team took an early lead and never looked back besting Rocky Point, 65-45, at the Tornadoes’ home court Jan. 10.

Harborfields senior forward Mike McDermott had the hot hand for the Tornadoes, netting seven field goals and a pair of free throws to lead his team in scoring with 16 points. Senior forward Joey Mitchell followed with a field goal, a pair of treys and 5 points from the line for 13 points while senior guard Jordan

Robinson banked 10 points.

What are the components of preventive wellness physical exam?

A. During an annual preventive wellness exam, your physician will take a full inventory of your current health and review your medical history to ensure no alarming changes have occurred. Detailed medical history, including your lifestyle, personal and social activities, as well as family history is discussed at the exam, which can help further identify necessary screenings. In addition, your weight, blood pressure and complete physical exam is assessed. Your age is also a determining factor for further screenings, such as cancer screenings and vaccinations.

The annual preventative wellness exam is essential to keeping you healthy.

Is annual preventive wellness exam covered by insurance?

A. Yes, almost all insurance carriers will cover your annual preventive wellness exam. In fact, most insurance carriers will cover at least one wellness or preventive exam per year.

Check with your insurance provider to identify their policies regarding the wellness and preventive exam, as all policies are not the same.

Do I get any follow-up after the preventive wellness exam to review test results?

A. Yes, in most cases your physician will suggests a one-two week follow-up visit in the office after the exam to address any new medical findings. In the event of a new finding, your physician will coordinate your individual care plan.

When should I come for an annual exam?

A. Children and adults, should schedule a preventive wellness exam once per year, whether you feel sickly or healthy. As a primary care physician, I encourage patients to always make and keep their annual scheduled wellness exams, because they are extremely important to an individual’s wellbeing.

Editorial

Dear newspaper editor One of the best parts of our job is providing an outlet for readers to express their beliefs and passions on the Letters to the Editor page. Knowing what is on the minds of community members is always valuable to us and to the rest of our readers.

This is a platform for releasing passions.

That’s why we’re hoping a few readers who called us last week will take pen to paper — or fingers to keyboard — and write us a letter. After the Jan. 10 editorial criticizing the extended government shutdown over a proposed wall on the U.S. and Mexican border, we received a few calls from readers who were unhappy with our opinion. Some went as far as to say they would no longer read our papers. Even though they want to end their relationships with us, we appreciate their calls. We wish they would have taken the time to write a Letter to the Editor, because that’s one of the purposes of the page — for a reader to let the newspaper staff and readers know that they don’t agree with an editorial or even an article.

We encourage and appreciate letters from all our readers no matter where they stand, even when it comes to politics. Also, we would love to see more letters from those who voted for and support President Donald Trump (R) as well as those who don’t. We want readers to tell us what they like and don’t like about the president — we appreciate hearing from all sides. We think our readers do too.

Speaking of Trump and national issues, many have asked why they don’t see more letters about local topics. When we receive them, we gladly publish them. We would love to hear more about what our readership thinks of political decisions on the town and village levels as well as our local elected officials.

These letters to the editor can create much-needed conversations, but a few readers have commented there’s too much back and forth between some individuals in some of our papers. We always do our best to give people an equal opportunity to respond to each other, but some of that back and forth would stop if we received more letters about a wider variety of topics.

Letters to the editor Honesty, unity key to solving Huntington’s issues

I am writing to express my concern following the Jan. 9 stabbing of a 16-yearold Huntington High School student, an incident also involving injury to others, by three young men Suffolk County police say are likely MS-13 gang members.

Following the incident, I reached out to town colleagues as well as those in Suffolk County, the SCPD 2nd Precinct, the Suffolk County district attorney, among other partner agencies, to discuss the matter and explore ways in which we can enhance safety for residents and youth. I am also looking at other avenues to increase security in the Huntington Station area.

Further, I have closely followed a separate incident that recently came to light following a news account detailing the 2017 deportation of a Huntington High School student for involvement in MS-13.

This article called into question the role of school personnel and the school resource officer (SRO) in that deportation. To many, the article’s portrayal of the SRO assigned to Huntington High School strained credulity as this police officer has been, for the last 15 years, widely known and respected as an asset, trusted professional and friend in Huntington’s school communities.

These two incidents are separate and serious school district/law enforcement matters, with details still evolving and quite naturally, have become subjects of great concern marked by fierce community discussion and debate.

At the Jan. 8 SCPD 2nd Precinct meeting, community members expressed concerns with regard to the school/police partnership process and policy, especially that related to student information sharing between

county police and outside law enforcement agencies. 2nd Precinct Inspector Bill Scrima assured attendees that the news account of the Huntington High School student deportation that ignited widespread questions was not the “full story” but could not disclose further details.

In the very serious business of law enforcement there is inherently going to be information the public cannot know, information that could compromise an ongoing investigation or the safety of one or more persons. The monthly 2nd Precinct meetings are of great benefit in providing answers to day-to-day questions and, in general, keeping the community updated about ongoing matters and new trends.

With regard to any intergovernmental public partnership, such as that between a school district and police department, the community, and most especially the school parents who are directly impacted by such a partnership, have a right to know the basic rules of engagement. The Huntington board of education has publicly committed to formalizing its relationship with SCPD by way of an agreement that will outline procedures and guidelines involved with police presence in a school environment. I believe this action could go a long way in addressing the many questions recently posed about the SRO program.

With greater transparency of public partnerships, along with continuing open and honest dialogue, I believe we, as a community, can begin to repair a fault line that has occurred, in part from incomplete, or even unknown, information.

Sometimes we need to look back to remind ourselves that many of our present

challenges are not always new, and to recall lessons learned from the past.

For example, in 2002, the Town of Huntington was named an “All-America City” (even though we are not a “city”) by the National Civic League. We earned that prestigious designation in a nationwide competition among 40 municipalities because of the manner in which our town and its community and government partners, among them, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, Family Service League and TRI-Community & Youth Agency, demonstrated the effective ways in which they came together to resolve problems ranging from affordable housing to gang violence.

In a June 23, 2002, New York Times article titled “Huntington Named ‘AllAmerica City’” former town Supervisor Frank Petrone was quoted: “Huntington’s award shows that it accepts challenges …

We solve problems. We don’t sweep them under the rug.”

As a Huntington High School alumna, lifelong resident of the Huntington Union Free School District and member of the Huntington Town Board, I pledge to continue extending myself to aid my alma mater and other school districts in the town, residents, my colleagues at all levels of government and our community partners, focusing my time and attention to acknowledging and helping to solve problems, facilitating open and honest dialogue and seeking as many resources as are available to affect positive change.

Swearing-in ceremony an example for all The swearing-in ceremony for newly elected state Sen. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) Jan. 12 was a remarkable event here on Long Island. At the most basic level, I was touched by the amount of support for Monica and her accomplishments. She represents a true American success story — coming to this country at age 3 from El Salvador, growing up in a local community to become a school teacher and then its county legislator.

This is a remarkable story in and of itself, but now Monica is moving up to represent her larger community as a state senator. Best of all, she is doing things for all the right reasons, to help her fellow community members share in the success of this nation and, like all immigrants before her, help to make this nation a success as well.

In our world of seemingly broken government, another significant aspect of the event stands out, even if only relevant for the short two-hour period of the ceremony. The outpouring of support for Monica not only filled the Brentwood High School auditorium, it was a true bipartisan cross section of society. Yes, Democrats like U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo were there as the keynote speakers to laud the absolute success story on display. But there, too, were stalwart Long Island Republicans like U.S. Congressman Peter King and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, among many others. Long Island’s elected leaders attended to cheer the achievements of one of our own, regardless of tribe or partisan politics. For many it may have gone under the radar, but the “D” and “R” in people’s

affiliation took a two-hour break.

At least for those few hours on Saturday morning, Long Island political society functioned in a healthy manner. Why can’t our gang in Washington, D.C., get it together as well and open the government so people are not suffering unnecessarily? Let us hope that what was accomplished here can be accomplished in our nation’s capital, and all our elected officials can return to working together for the benefit of the many, not the benefit of the few. Let Monica’s ceremony be a symbol for all of us of what we should be — a nation that celebrates in the accomplishments of all its citizens.

An unwelcome gray hair announces advancing age

F

rom birth, hair has been a signal. I had hair when I was born, which probably doesn’t come as too much of a surprise to people who have known me for years.

When I was young, my haircutter used to imagine becoming wealthy by figuring out what made my hair grow so rapidly.

For those without hair, this isn’t a boast; it’s a part of a genetic heriD. None tage that cuts both of the above ways. My hair,

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF as it turns out, is also thick and fast growing on my eyebrows or, as people have preferred to say, eyebrow. The space between my

eyebrows is just as eager to grow hair as the area just above my eyes.

In college, I tried to grow my hair longer to see how I’d look with shoulder-length hair. That was a failed experiment as my hair grew out instead of down, turning it into a heavy tangle of thick hair.

When I met my wife, I convinced her that I couldn’t disconnect the hair between my eyebrows, or I would be like Sampson and loose my strength. Amused as she was by the story, she let it slide. The afternoon of our wedding, she was stunned to see me with two eyebrows. She wanted to know what had happened and, more importantly, how I was still standing?

I told her that I went for a professional shave so that my usual facial shadow wouldn’t appear during the wedding. While I had my eyes closed, the barber removed the hair above my nose with a quick wrist flick.

Fortunately, my wife didn’t ask for ongoing

removal of that hair when it returned.

As I’ve gotten older, hair has emerged from unwelcome places, making appearances from my ears and nose. Who needs hair there — and how could Charles Darwin possibly explain the presence of such unwelcome hair? Does the ear hair announce my advancing age and lower social value?

That brings us to today. As I was maneuvering through the usual deep thoughts, resolutions and promises for the start of the new year, an errant and unwanted fellow emerged from my nose. He was clearly long enough to attract attention, but what was especially surprising about “Jedediah” wasn’t just that he was long or that he seemed to rappel out of my nose. It was his color that offered such an unwelcome but realistic signal — Jedediah was gray.

Ugh! Who wants or needs a gray nose hair, not only offering the world a clue that my hair growth was out of control, but that I’m also

so much older that even my nose hairs have started to show signs of aging? Do people dye their nose hairs?

Should I pluck him, trim him or wear him with pride, hoping that he distracts people from the progressively bushier pile of hair pouring out of my ears?

Wouldn’t a rugged individualist defy convention and wear the years and the hair growth with pride, despite the lack of magazine covers with contemporary studs like Hugh Jackman with hair coming out of their noses? If Hugh made gray nose hair fashionable, would I feel less self-conscious about Jedediah?

Poor Jedediah, who worked so hard to emerge from the nose cave, suffered the same fate as the errant hairs that grew out of my ears.

He reluctantly left the warm comfort of my nose and was discarded into the trash.

While hair may tell a story about each person, Jedidiah will no longer be sharing mine, except for readers of this column.

The longer we live there, the harder it is to leave.

When my elder brother died, leaving the co-op empty that my parents had bought and lived in for many years, I started slowly to have alterations made inside the apartment. The bathroom and kitchen needed to be brought up to date, appliances modernized, floors improved. My cousin watched with some amusement. “You are making a temple to your parents’ memory,” she offered. Not really, I thought to myself. I was investing for a far more pragmatic reason. I had hopes of one day renting it out for some supplemental income. But when I thought about her wry comment, I had to admit there was an element of truth in it. Our family had lived there happily for such a long time. I was even born there. It wasn’t just an apartment. It was the physical container for some of my happiest times.

And it was comforting, somehow, that it was still there, even if we no longer were.

I remember when I was still in elementary school, just down the block, that one of my young classmates came to school one day to wish us goodbye. With tears in her eyes, she explained that her family was moving to someplace called Ohio for her father’s job, and she would be leaving us. “Don’t worry,” soothed the teacher, “you’ll go to a nice school there and make new friends. You’ll grow from the experience. And you can always come back to visit.” She nodded her head obediently, but I remember thinking then how sad it must be to leave one’s home and all associated with it to start over. Leaving a home means interrupting the momentum of one’s life. I wondered if my father would ever move us all elsewhere and comforted myself with the thought that he seemed pretty anchored where he was, which meant I would continue to live near my school.

A house is just an inanimate thing, bought and sold. But when it is a home, it can be the soul of the people who once lived there.

For starters, it’s four walls and a roof, maybe even a basement, but maybe not, in which we

shelter ourselves, our families and our stuff. It is also a place where we invite friends and neighbors to drop in for a drink, a chat or even an elegant dinner party. Some of those guests may even stay over from time to time, so a house is a hospitality center in which we connect with those we enjoy and perhaps love.

A house is a physical location where we can be found. When people ask our names, they may immediately follow up with a second question: “Where do you live?” So to some extent, where we live helps define us. But a house is more, so much more. It is a home where those closest to us reside, perhaps where our children grow up, where we planned, and from which we traveled to and from work to become the people we are today.

Home is where we want to go immediately when we are not feeling well. It’s where we can get a soothing cup of tea or our regular sustenance at mealtimes. Home is a place where we rest, watch television, read the newspaper, use the computer, play video games, call our friends,
