NATIONAL Religious leaders from array of faiths denounce ‘family separations’

Normally various religious leaders getting together at the same place and time sounds like the lead-in to a joke, but an event at North Shore Jewish Center in Port Jefferson Station June 24 was far from a laughing matter.

United States immigration policy, specifically the recently instituted “zero tolerance” policy by President Donald Trump (R) and his administration, which has resulted in the detention of several thousand of people and the separation of families attempting to cross the border together, was the topic of discussion during an interfaith vigil of prayer and unity at the synagogue Sunday.

Rabbi Aaron Benson of NSJC, the Rev. Richard Visconti of Caroline Church of Brookhaven in East Setauket, the Rev. Chuck Van Houten of Stony Brook Community Church, Irma Solis of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, Yousuf Sayed of the Islamic Association of Long Island, Rabbi Steven Moss of B’nai Israel Reform Temple and the Rev. Kate Jones Calone of Setauket Presbyterian Church were among the speakers collectively denouncing the policy at the event.

“The goal is to inspire our community to advocate for national border and

immigration policies guided by a basic sense of human dignity and worth for all people involved,” a press release announcing the event said. “America should be a country leading the world in compassion and human rights. In this moment, where our country falls short of that, the religious community continues to lead with morals and hopes that our followers will stand together for these families.”

Moss, who also serves as chairperson for the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, said the leaders of the represented faiths — Christianity, Judaism and Islam — were brought to the event through the foundations of religious traditions.

“We must stand firm, together — stand tall against these laws and rules, orders and directives that fail to protect the poor, the needy, the homeless, the immigrant — both legal and illegal — and their children from being mistreated, demonized, dehumanized and brutalized,” Moss said. “A government that fails to protect all people is not a government at all.”

Calone, in addressing the dozens gathered at NSJC, likened what she described as the rising tensions brought about by the political “otherization” of migrants seeking refuge at American borders, to sitting in a tub of water gradually getting hotter, adding it’s finally reached a boiling point.

“This is, appropriately, a confession, because if it takes the horror of

ued to rise every time the nation is silently complicit with the demonization of certain religions, with limits or bans on certain people from certain places or with violence against people not in power. “How awful,” we say — a response I’ve said, heard, felt many times over the past weeks to stories that seem like bad dreams trickling out slowly at first and then printed in line after line, video segment after video segment. It seemed unbelievable at first, reports that read like bad dreams — desperate mothers and fathers; transports in the middle of the night; cages; warehoused, crying children.”

Benson and the leaders, many of whom are members of the Three Village Clergy Council, indicated on a pamphlet handed out at the event that there are ways to help, directing those in attendance to the websites www.familiesbelong.org and www.hias.org/ take-action, among others. He said the group is also planning on holding future events.

Trump signed an executive order last week designed to end family separations, as national attention to the story reached critical mass, though as of press time around 500 of 2,300 separated parents and children detained apart at the U.S.—Mexico border have since been reunited. The policy has been both denounced by members of the Trump administration as a holdover Obamaera procedure and publicly cited as a new strategy intentionally instituted to deter illegal immigration.

At the conclusion of the 2018 school year at Earl L. Vandermeulen and Comsewogue high schools, four graduates stood at the top of their respective classes.

These extraordinarily talented students include valedictorian Ibuki Iwasaki and salutatorian Eli Doyle from Port Jeff and valedictorian Luke Begley and salutatorian Charles Clark from Comsewogue.

At Earl L. Vandermeulen, Iwasaki finished the year at the top of the class with a 101.4 cumulative grade point average. Iwasaki was president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Mathletes team, for which she competed in more than 20 competitions, and won the All-County Ibuki Iwasaki title for the 201718 school year.

“I am self-motivated,” she said of her academic drive. “My mother trusts me to seek out challenges.”

She attributed her success to her natural curiosity.

“I like to learn and try out new things whenever I can,” she said.

Iwasaki was also a member of the Science Olympiad team, where she was a first-place and third-place winner in various competitions. The team travels to universities near and far to compete against other high schools in a sports-style science tournament sponsored by organizations like NASA, Lockheed Martin and the United States Air Force. Iwasaki had also been a player on the varsity tennis team since eighth grade and was undefeated individually in the league this year. She is a National Merit Scholarship recipient, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and had earned a perfect score for three years at Level IV NYSSMA on the violin. Iwasaki will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall but said she has not declared an official major.

“I want to take advantage of all the opportunities MIT has to offer,” she said.

Eli Doyle finished high school with a 100.9 GPA. Doyle said he is grateful to the high school faculty for allowing him to achieve greatness.

“I appreciate Eli Doyle the opportunity my school has given me to achieve what I have achieved,” he said.

In addition to being an exemplary

student, Doyle excelled on the field as well as the stage, having played tennis since ninth grade, earning honors from the Suffolk County Junior Tennis League, and working as part of the stage crew for school plays, musicals and concerts. He also volunteered at Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community in South Setauket and spent his time with the residents, earning him the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Like Iwasaki, he was also a member of the Science Olympiad squad, finishing in first place in both optics and astronomy competitions. He was a member and officer of the Student Organization for all four years of his high school career and had the opportunity to participate in the Simmons Summer Research program at Stony Brook University where he studied ferroelectric fluid, which is a type of magnetic fluid that can be used in many applications from computer hard drives to rocket Luke Begley fuel. Doyle will be attending Brown University this fall where he will study engineering physics.

At Comsewogue, Luke Begley was named valedictorian, finishing with a 101.5 GPA. Begley is a music-minded scholar as well as a scholar-athlete. He was a member of the NYSSMA All-State Orchestra on the double bass and played midfield on the Comsewogue varsity soccer team. He attributed his academic success to his parents and his teachers.

“They always motivated me and created an environment where I could succeed, and my teachers always knew how to keep me interested and engaged,” he said.

Begley was also the president of the French National Charles Clark Honor Society, captain of the Academic Quiz Bowl team and an AP Scholar with Distinction during his junior year. He credited his drive to succeed to his close friends.

“We keep a good balance of competition and cooperation where we compete to be the best academically but still help each other when it is necessary,” he said.

Begley will be attending Princeton University this fall where he will be double majoring in physics and music.

Comsewogue salutatorian Charles Clark had a 101.3 GPA to wrap up his senior year.

He could not be reached for comment.

Months of hard work by volunteers from the Port Jefferson community finally came to fruition June 25. Earl L. Vandermeulen’s annual senior prom, featuring a secret theme selected by the Senior Prom Committee — made up of parents and others who donate their time to pulling together the event — and arrivals to a red carpet in out-of-the-ordinary rides, went off Monday night in front of hundreds from the school and surrounding community.

This year, the high school entrance, firstfloor hallways, bathrooms and gymnasium were decorated in a Neverland theme, an ode to the Disney classic “Peter Pan.” Parents of members of the senior class meet throughout the school year to vote and settle on a theme, plan the theme’s implementation, and then spend the frantic weekend between graduation Friday night and prom Monday night constructing the decorations.

“There’s a lot of people, like myself, whose kids graduated quite a while ago, who showed up and worked during the week at night or on the weekend,”

said John Poulianos, a member of the committee who has been pitching in to help with the event since 1999. “I think people just feel it’s such a worthwhile event that they’re willing to give their time. It is so unique.”

Though the event was the by-product of hard work by dozens of individuals, community members were sure to recognize the efforts of Port Jeff graduate Jon Famularo on social media.

“Your dedication makes it possible to accomplish more and deliver rich and theatrical looks for the prom,” Paul Braille wrote on Facebook.

Remembering one of Port Gershon emerges from field of Jeff’s shining stars

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Port Jefferson is a tight-knit community with a small-town feel, which is probably at the top of the list of reasons why people love it. A by-product of that fact is that when a community member is lost, the impact reverberates quickly and intensely. When the person is also widely beloved, the reverberations can feel seismic.

That’s what Port Jefferson Village is going through right now with the loss of Jill NeesRussell. The village’s longtime public relations representative and general Swiss Army knife died June 18. She left behind her husband Fred and kids Henry and Lily.

Jill was as kind and generous of a person as I’ve ever met. Two years ago this week, I was promoted at TBR News Media to the editor of The Port Times Record. My predecessor, Elana Glowatz, had covered Port Jeff for nearly a decade, establishing relationships and getting a feel for the ins and outs of the community to a degree that left me feeling overwhelmed and intimidated to say the least. How could I possibly maintain the connections she’d taken painstaking hours, days, weeks and years to craft — let alone forming new ones on top of that?

I wasn’t on the job for more than a day or two before I was alerted that I had a call from Jill.

She reached out to introduce herself and invite me to join her for breakfast and coffee that week at Local’s Café. Somehow she must have sensed my head spinning a few miles down Route 25A at our Setauket office, and was immediately looking to offer a helping hand. She sat with me for more than an hour sharing names, contacts, future programs and events — and even insisted that I try the avocado toast she had ordered. I returned to work from that meeting with a fresh outlook on my new position. I felt like a skydiver who

had just been gifted a parachute. Throughout the time that our career paths intersected, I always knew I could count on her for support, be it photos from an event I wasn’t able to attend or suggestions for who might be best suited to answer my questions.

Jill’s time in Port Jeff was so far-reaching that there are likely people who never met her that were still impacted by her talents and dedication. She was one of the driving forces behind so many of the most popular events the village has to offer, putting in hours of work to make the Charles Dickens Festival and Heritage Weekend seminal occasions.

Testimonials about her impact on people who did know her have flooded social media in the days since her passing.

“We here in the Village of Port Jefferson were so very lucky to have worked with her, loved her and spent these last 10 years with her,” Mayor Margot Garant wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post. “Jill loved life and her family so much. She was the epitome of beauty, inside and out, loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her and she touched us all with her grace, her smile, her spirit and her optimism and pure joy for life. I will miss her more than words can ever express and I know I speak for so, so many when I say we were so truly blessed to love her and have her call Port Jefferson her home.”

Many took to a Facebook group comprised of village residents past and present to also bid Jill farewell.

“Jill Nees-Russell loved our village and bled purple,” Brenda Eimers Batter wrote.

“She will absolutely be missed.”

“It’s people like her that make our village the beautiful community it is and the community it will always be,” Steven Muñoz said.

“She will never be forgotten. Her passion and love for Port Jeff will live on forever.”

Rest in peace Jill, and thank you for your unwavering kindness. The way you treated people should be an example to all.

The stage is finally set for what will likely be a fierce campaign leading up to the November midterm elections.

Perry Gershon, a largely self-funded firsttime candidate for political office, who spent years as a commercial mortgage lender and a small business owner, defeated four other Democrats aiming to take down incumbent 1st District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) June 26.

More than 20,300 1st District voters turned out to vote in the primary, which was open to only those registered as members of the party, as per New York State law.

Gershon secured 7,226 votes, beating former Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning, his closest competitor, by about 1,000 votes.

Vivian Viloria-Fisher, another former legislator, finished third with 3,314 votes. In 2016, about 12,600 registered Democrats went to the polls on primary day to choose between Anna Throne-Holst and Dave Calone.

“The voters showed that we’re tired of what’s going on in Washington,” Gershon said to a room full of supporters and volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Setauket when it became clear his lead would hold up. He thanked his family and those who worked to help him win the nomination, as well as the other four candidates, who he said ran a clean race with an eye on unifying postprimary all along.

“Our elected leaders are not responsive to what people are looking for. People want a new breed, and that’s what I stand for.”

Zeldin, who has been quiet about his potential challengers, wasted no time getting the campaign started on Twitter once Gershon became the presumed victor.

“Park Ave Perry may have bought himself

the Democratic Party nomination in NY-1, but our Congressional seat is not for sale,” the incumbent wrote. “NY-1 isn’t electing a far left, Pelosi-loving, NYC Democrat who registered in our district very recently just to run for Congress.”

In an interview after his win, Gershon said he intends to make his campaign about health care, the environment and creating high-wage jobs in the 1st District.

“I’m really excited, I feel like people believed in me and I’m so happy for it,” he said.

Many of those believers were people who readily admitted they’d never gotten much involved in politics in the past.

“I’ve seen a lot of people, like at my school, very few people who cared about politics beforehand but after the March for Our Lives, after the result of the Never Again movement, and even after what’s happening at the border right now, far more young people are getting involved,” said Scott Egnor, a Ward Melville High School student who helped organize the youth-led local gun control protests in March.

He cited Gershon’s desire to ban assault-style weapons and strengthen background checks as the driving force behind his motivation to volunteer for his campaign. “Even at the office, he still wears his March for Our Lives hat, and I think that spoke to me a lot.”

Browning said in an interview from her watch party in Patchogue she’s not sure what her next move might be in politics, but vowed to support Gershon’s efforts to flip the seat in November.

“It’s about taking out Lee Zeldin, and we all need to regroup and support [Gershon],” she said.

All five candidates told TBR News Media in May they intended to support the primary winner.

A Port Jefferson Station native is making a name for himself in the physics world.

A Connetquot High School graduate in 2010 and Port Jeff Station resident, Rostislav Grynko was recently honored by Binghamton University for his extensive research in the field of physics. He was recognized as a “model graduate” and received the school’s Graduate Student Excellence in Research Award while pursuing his doctorate in physics.

The requirements to qualify for the award are rigorous. Nominees are chosen by a committee within the graduate school and are required to submit a nomination packet. This packet includes a résumé, letters of recommendation from faculty members who have directed the student’s research, as well as from other graduate students who have witnessed presentations and/or seminars directed by the student and can attest to their quality and effectiveness. Nominees must also submit published articles they have written, and winners are chosen from a consolidated list of nominees presented to the graduate council. Grynko was described by the school as “friendly, hard-working, enthusiastic and mature” in a press release.

The physicist is currently working on several projects including time-resolved harmonic generation, laser filamentation, laser micromachining and optical tomography using fibers with researchers at Binghamton and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“I was really happy — it’s good for our group to have our work get out there and it was an honor,” Grynko said of receiving the recognition. He said his research could be used for an array of applications, ranging from the biomedical field, treating cancer using high-intensity lasers, to optical computing.

Assistant Professor and doctoral adviser Bonggu Shim, spoke highly of Grynko.

“I am so proud of Ross,” he said. “He is a graduate student of diligence, intelligence and integrity whom every graduate adviser likes. He is an excellent researcher as well as a great leader who superbly guides the junior graduate and undergraduate students in my group.”

There are many specific applications within the realm of his research, but Grynko said he is passionate about some specific aspects.

“Merging the applied, practical side of things with fundamental physics,” he said is his main interest. “Recently this has come in the form of fabricating photonic circuits on flexible substrates which will allow us to make things like wearable, flexible photonic devices.”

Similar to a smart watch, wearable photonic devices would be able to detect things such as heart rate and blood pressure without a bulky watch to take on and off, and may well be an important method for health monitoring in the near future.

Grynko is described as a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic, which he said he acquired from his mother.

“It’s my mom — she is just an extremely hard worker; she brought up my sister and I as a single mother and she is just an inspiration to me everyday,” he said.

Grynko’s mom, Nataliya Olivieri, said she was extremely proud to find out her son had won the Graduate Excellence Award.

“I am so proud of him, he works very, very hard,” she said.

She said her son had always been interested in science, even as a child.

Grynko has also worked in collaboration with researchers at Columbia University and has seven publications. His presentation skills have been recognized with an award for Best Student Presenter at the 2017 Advances in Semiconductor Packaging Symposium.

Typical Work Activities (Include, but are not limited to) Take minutes at meetings, as well as type and post them; record and maintain ledgers, accurately post and reconcile accounting figures; Receive, disburse, and deposit monies for purchase orders; oversee and maintain the payroll and payroll withholding taxes; make reports to federal, state and local authorities regarding insurance, pension, disability rosters and injuries; issue reports on bank balances, and itemize receipts and withdrawals to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare monthly and annual reports of receipts and disbursements of District monies to be furnished to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare for, oversee, and administrate the annual Fire District Elections, Seminars, and the Installation dinner; and act as a liaison with the Fire District actuary and auditor.

Full Performance knowledge, skills, and abilities Good knowledge of Fire Department routines, functions, terminology of equipment and procedure; Good knowledge of English, spelling, and arithmetic; Good knowledge of ledger posting and bookkeeping practices, as well as recording and filing; Skill in speed writing or shorthand, and typing at a reasonable rate of speed; Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Board of Fire Commissioners, volunteer fire personnel, employees, and the general public; Ability to compose routine letters and memoranda; Should be proficient in using computers, utilizing Email, using word processing programs, and spread sheets; Must be proficient (after training) in utilizing the Fire District accounting software.

The Fire District Secretary-Treasurer answers to and is under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners, who are 5 elected public officials. The Board of Fire Commissioners appoints this position annually. An annual performance report will be provided.

This job is part time. Typical hours are Monday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Friday 9am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1pm and 1-2 evening meetings a month.

We need to keep 2018 graduates on LI

In the May 31 article in The Port Times Record entitled “Preserving local history amid revitalization project,” Jack Smith, the president of the Cumsewogue Historical Society, called to our attention that two historic buildings, located on the south side of the railroad tracks and on the east side of 25A in Port Jefferson Station, are threatened with demolition.

These two buildings, the 1908 E. H. Rogers Feed Mill and the 1922 brick Costigan building remain as tangible links to the region’s history, representing, as Jack Smith indicated, an “integral component of our agricultural community.” While most, if not all the region’s farms have disappeared in favor of suburbia, these two buildings can and should remain as symbols of our agrarian heritage.

Hundreds of Long Island students have accepted their high school diplomas this week. We’ve sent them off into the world armed with the best advice and pearls of wisdom we have to offer. In doing so, we can’t help but hope this isn’t goodbye.

The Class of 2018 students are each pursuing his or her own version of the American Dream. What defines that dream can vary greatly — whether it’s studying medicine at Stony Brook University, learning a trade or joining the military. The question we have to ask is this: When these students are envisioning their futures, how many picture himself or herself staying on Long Island?

While parents and teachers are taking pride — and deserved pats on the back — in getting this year’s seniors through their first 12 years of schooling, it doesn’t stop there. The older generation and its leadership must continue to take action to transform Long Island into an attractive and affordable place for young adults to live.

“We spend a lot of money educating our kids here,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) acknowledged in his 2018 State of the County address. “Too many of them have left for other parts of the country, where they are helping to power their regional economies. We have to stop that.”

For the first time in two decades, there is a glimmer of hope that the brain drain trend is starting to slow. The population of people between ages 20 and 34 living in Nassau and Suffolk counties has increased by 7.6 percent from 2010 to 2015 — for the first time since 1990 — according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 Population Estimates, as stated in a June 2017 report by the Long Island Association. LIA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies, programs and projects that benefit Long Island and support economic development and infrastructure investments.

However, there’s still 100,000 fewer residents in the 20 to 34 age group on Long Island than in 1990. So, there’s still a ways to go in attracting and keeping bright, young professionals on Long Island.

To this end, Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) proposed legislation June 22 that would instruct Suffolk’s Department of Economic Development and Planning to create a pilot program to address the issues causing millennials to leave for less expensive areas. While there are few specific details available on this proposal, Gregory has pointed to other municipalities creating programs that help young adults with student debt purchase homes while still paying down their loans.

This is but one step in the right direction. As the Class of 2018 disperses, their parents’ work shifts from helping with science projects and math homework to advocating for local change that will improve the quality of life young adults can expect on Long Island. Better entry-level job opportunities that offer competitive salaries without requiring travel into the city are needed, and more affordable housing and assistance to put the down payment on a house to help start a family are also important.

Take a few days to rejoice and celebrate with the graduating Class of 2018, but there is much work to be done creating a brighter, more youthful future for Long Island.

While the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson supports the revitalization effort, we believe that these two vital buildings can and should be integrated into this plan by being repurposed to ensure a continued connection to our wonderful history.

It has been shown that older buildings can be repurposed and remain a part of the community; as examples, the beautiful 1907 Port Jefferson First National Bank building and the 1917 Bayles Shipyard Building, which now serves as the community center, both originally threatened with demolition, remain as everyday reminders of our ship building past. Such buildings are often unique to the area and their preservation can instill a sense of pride into

the community.

We encourage the developer to consider ways to incorporate these two buildings into his redevelopment plan so that the end result is both one of a kind and a representation of his commitment to the community’s history. Old buildings should not be ignored as their architectural elements can be replicated but cannot be replaced.

The Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson fully supports the Cumsewogue Historical Society’s efforts, led by its president, regarding these two buildings and urges the developer to do the same.

Marvel at letters from progressives Recently I watched the latest riot, this one in Portland, Oregon. The Soros-backed anarchist group Antifa decided to attack an American prayer group downtown, but this time, for the first time, the clueless, masked baby SS mob, armed with projectiles and pepper spray took a beating. Must-see TV at its finest.

This is the Obama legacy. A legacy of racial division, antiChristian/Jewish street warfare right out of the Alinsky playbook. During the eight years of Obama’s administration, the unbridled war on our police was the most violent since the Capone/Dillinger days. Most entertaining are the letters from the aforementioned demographic who can’t resist calling the president “chump” or ruminating over what the president is “doing” to our country. Compared to who? A nasty unhinged commie from Vermont or a self-enriching, pathological liar named Hillary, who’s gone unindicted longer than Gotti and Capone combined. Unemployment is the lowest in 40 years, and I’m feeling good for the first time in 20 years. Anyone who votes along party lines alone, is a dimwit.

Oh, Trump said the “p” word 90 years ago? Whoopdidoo.

Show me a man who hasn’t said that word, and I’ll show you Liberace. There is now true hope. The massive damage done

Seriously, this is one huge country and we haven’t even discussed the last two states to join the union.

Alaska is a gem, with vistas stretching as far as the eye can see, as shimmering spawning salmon make streams and rivers glow orange, while bears nibble here and there as cars and buses pass them along the sides of the highways.

Hawaii reminded everyone this year that it’s a volcanic archipelago. It’s a magnificent and lush combination of majestic mountains, bamboo forests and striking cliffs.

So, what would this great country of ours want for its birthday?

Well, maybe it would want us, even for a day, to all get along. We are all Americans, we have all heard the stories about the forefathers who fought for this country, who defied the British, and who wanted what was best for them and, all these years later, us.

Maybe it would want us to tidy up.

After all, who doesn’t want to look

good on their birthday, right? We could clean up our yards, clean up our neighbor’s yard, remove trash from the area around the school, a place so many enthusiastic children recently abandoned for the start of the summer.

Maybe we should take a moment to think about how we are helping ourselves, or others, reach the American Dream. We all want life to be better, but maybe we can encourage others to strive for, and reach, a dream that anyone from anywhere could reach greatness. We are not like Europeans of past centuries, who limited opportunities for success by class, gender or ancestry.

The home of the free and the land of the brave is all about allowing anyone from any walk of life to reach their potential and, more importantly, to decide their potential.

America is about celebrating youth. We are a young country, filled with hope for the future, unbridled optimism and joy.

Regardless of what politicians in Washington say, we are also a country that likes to laugh, even at ourselves.

We have a great sense of humor. Need a laugh? Watch “Bridesmaids” or “Groundhog Day” — or if in the mood for something older, “Animal House.”

We pull apart and then we come together. We speak with different accents, depending on where we come from or what part of the world our ancestors originally inhabited.

When we come together, we are unstoppable, finding our best selves from the roles we play in companies, on teams, or in close-knit families that stand ready, willing and able to support each other through any challenge.

Sure, we can hang the flag, eat a hot dog, have a barbecue and sing a few American songs to celebrate our country.

But, hey, maybe we can also look for the best in each other and in ourselves as we again give hope to the notion that a rising tide of optimism, of cooperation, of compassion lifts all boats.

And by the time the movie was over, I believe there was an enriched sense of community among those in the room.

As much as we want to know where we came from, we also enjoy a sense of belonging to a community. One viewer from farther away came up to me at the end and said he wished for that pride in his city. That particularly pleased me because we as publishers of the hometown paper have always sought to strengthen those ties. Strong communities can be a powerful force for good. They also want to get the latest local news by reading the local papers, which is not so bad for us.

Making a film was a new experience.

My eldest grandson, Benji, the director of “One Life to Give,” aspires to be a professional filmmaker as his career progresses, and as we saw he has already acquired many filmmaking skills in college, where he is now a senior. He also brought to us for this venture a remarkable hardworking and talented crew of young professionals in front of and behind the camera. Thanks to our local connections, which included local historical societies and carefully preserved sites, we were able to put together an authentic venue for the

shoot. The weather was wondrously cooperative, and actors and historic re-enactors of considerable skill joined the team. Local restaurants, costume outfitters, dry cleaners, scenery designers, makeup and special effects people and SBU, among others, made in-kind contributions. Muskets and cannons were procured and brought to the filming site, often among hilarious circumstances. One rule became obvious: No day would go exactly as planned.

A number of generous local businesses helped us meet costs by agreeing to be sponsors, and for their help they received credits before and after the film. Their names will be seen near and far as a number of groups have asked to show the film.

My major contribution was offering my house for the 15 young people and their equipment throughout the shoot. I can tell you there was not a clear view of floor or rug during those 16 days. It was great fun with high excitement but on their next film, the shooting of which starts in two weeks’ time for release next year, they will definitely stay in a hotel.

unday was a magical night. After a full year of work, we offered you, our readers and viewers, the initial screening of “One Life to Give.”

Our first full-length film, the story is set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War more than 200 years ago, and is about Nathan Hale, Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington and the events leading up to the founding of the Culper Spy Ring.

The location for this screening was the 1,000seat Staller Center off Nicholls Road within Stony Brook University, and to my amazement and delight, we filled the

and digital media, especially competing as we were with graduation day at the local high school.

It’s also a lot more. In these chaotic and divided times, I believe we yearn to understand our common origin as a nation and the history that we share.

History after all is glue that holds us together and, to the surprise of many students who hate social studies in school, is also the series of fascinating stories about people, personalities and events that help define who we are today. And since our film is focused on local people and events, we share a pride of place. Our area has been dubbed the “cradle of history” because of its brutal occupation by the British, the activities of the spy ring and the military skirmishes during the war. Long Island, in fact, endured the longest occupation of any part of the colonies because its farms and forests, livestock and fish made up the unwilling breadbasket for the major British garrison in New York City.

So viewers came to see the history and the authentic local scenes and events, and the familiar faces of many residents as they served as extras on screen. Also some were simply curious.
