PJ Village Looks to Deal with Reckless Bicyclists

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Village officials have moved to curb reckless biking around Port Jeff by impounding bikes of people they find breaking the code.

At the Nov. 4 board meeting, Port Jefferson officials amended the village code to allow Suffolk County police and code enforcement officers to impound bicycles from reckless riders, including juveniles.

“As an era of common sense is not really operating anymore regarding bicycles, we have heard and seen kids running in front of cars, playing games where they’re hooking onto cars — incredibly dangerous activities out there,” village attorney Brian Egan said. “Vehicles are taking incredibly dangerous maneuvers to avoid these bikes.”

The code’s language forbids persons from trick riding, which usually comes in the form of wheelies, weaving back and forth in traffic or hanging onto automobiles driving on the road. It also forbids people from riding distracted, such as while using a phone or camera, though using a GoPro camera or similar devices while biking is permissible, according to the village attorney.

Acting Chief of Code Enforcement Fred Leute Jr. could not be reached for comment.

Egan said at the Nov. 4 meeting that the law was being “narrowly tailored” to still allow bike riding in the village.

Port Jeff Station Man Charged in Fraud and Money Laundering Scheme

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is charging a Commack company, Aventura Technologies Inc., and seven current and former employees with allegedly selling Chinese-made electronic equipment with known cybersecurity vulnerabilities to the federal government and private customers, while falsely representing the equipment as made in the United States.

The individual defendants charged in the alleged scheme include Northport residents Jack Cabasso, Aventura’s managing director and de facto owner and operator, and his wife Frances Cabasso, purported owner and chief executive officer. The Cabassos were also charged with money laundering proceeds from the alleged schemes and fraud for falsely representing Frances Cabasso as chief executive of Aventura to gain access to government contracts set aside for women-owned small businesses. The government froze approximately $3 million in 12 financial accounts that contain proceeds from the alleged unlawful conduct and seized the Cabassos’ 70-foot luxury yacht Tranquilo, which was moored in the gated community where the Cabassos reside.

“As alleged, the defendants falsely claimed for years that their surveillance and security equipment was manufactured on Long Island, padding their pockets with money from lucrative contracts without regard for risk to the country’s national security posed by secretly peddling made-in-China electronics with known cyber vulnerabilities,” stated U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard Donoghue in a release.

In addition to Aventura and the Cabassos, the company’s senior executives Jonathan Lasker of Port Jefferson Station, Christine Lavonne Lazarus of Shirley and Eduard Matulik of North Massapequa were charged in the complaint, along with Wayne Marino of Rocky Point, a current employee, and Alan

Schwartz of Smithtown, a recently retired employee.

If convicted, the defendants each face up to 20 years imprisonment on each charge of the complaint, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. No trial dates have been set, according to John Marzulli in the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The attorney for Frances Cabasso was out of town. Jack Cabasso’s attorney did not respond before press time to messages left on his answering machine.

“With the arrests, the defendants’ brazen deceptions and fraud schemes have been exposed, and they will face serious consequences for slapping phony ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ labels on products that our armed forces and sensitive government facilities depend upon,” Donoghue said.

Case documents state that the company lied to its customers, including the U.S. military, for more than a decade. Aventura reportedly generated more than $88 million in sales revenue from November 2010 and the charged scheme has allegedly been ongoing since 2006.

“Greed is at the heart of this scheme, a reprehensible motive when the subjects in this case allegedly put into question the security of men and women who don uniforms each day to protect our nation,” stated FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney Jr. The money laundering scheme allegedly entailed siphoning illegal profits out of the company through a network of shell companies and intermediaries, including transferring hundreds of thousands, and in some cases, millions of dollars into an attorney escrow account belonging to an unnamed Long Islandbased law firm, where the funds were used to purchase homes, in some cases for relatives.

The FBI has established an email hotline for potential victims. Anyone with information regarding Aventura’s alleged crimes or anyone who believes they have been a victim can send an email to NY-AventuraVictims@fbi.gov.

Comsewogue HS Aims to Revamp Business Department

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM When Mike Mosca was formally introduced as the incoming principal of Comsewogue High School at this past January’s district board meeting, he expressed his desire to revamp the school’s business department, saying he was focused on getting his students to the next step of their lives, whether it be college or straight into their careers.

Working together with Comsewogue Superintendent Jennifer Quinn, fellow teachers and administrators, collectively they have already begun making changes to the business curriculum at the start of this school year.

In conjunction with this strategy, the high school has revitalized its School to Career Advisory Committee, which aims to help students with their career paths and become productive members of the community. The group will be made up of teachers, administrators, business leaders, local professionals, community members, students and other stakeholders.

“We think this is something we believe will get our students to the next level,” Mosca said.

“We have been reaching out to professionals and asking them, ‘What are you looking for in a candidate?’ and use that help and sculpt our students to be successful post school.”

Mosca said he hopes that the revamped curriculum and committee will help bridge the gap from school to the next stage of a student’s life.

“We want to make the business curriculum focused on career readiness and want to make sure they gain the skills needed for the 21st century and their careers,” he said.

The principal of the high school said it has already begun reaching out to community members, organizations, professionals, business leaders, among others, to see who would be interested in joining the committee.

As of now, the district has around 50 people who have pledged to join the committee.

Together they will provide input on how the business courses can be improved as well as connecting students with professionals in their preferred career path.

Mosca said they have plans on doing mock interview days with students, job shadowing opportunities, guest speakers to talk to students and set up possible internships.

Anthony Ketterer, business education teacher, said he believes this is a great opportunity and advantageous for students at the high school.

“We want our students to think about their careers and life after high school,” he said. “We want to bring students and professionals together … and continue the strong relationship between the community and the school.”

Port Jeff Memorial Park Updated with New Monuments for Veterans Day

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Local officials and veterans gathered at Port Jefferson Memorial Park for an unveiling ceremony of three new monuments to honor those who served in the nation’s most recent conflicts Nov. 10.

The ceremony and unveiling completes renovations for three of four memorial sites located in Port Jefferson, Setauket and Stony Brook identified last year for upgrades. The new memorials honor those who served during the Cold War, Lebanon peacekeeping, the Grenada and Panama invasions, the two Gulf wars, the Afghanistan War and the War on Terror.

The work was spearheaded by a war memorial fund committee formed last fall through a partnership between Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars members, and the Long Island State Veterans Home.

“Today is the unveiling of three new monuments that have been long overdue here — the previous three monuments only went up to the Vietnam War,” said Bill Wolf Sr., commander of the Port Jefferson Station American Legion Wilson Ritch Post 432. “We are dedicating three new monuments from the Cold War to our present-day wars we are fighting today.”

Hahn thanked the veterans present for the sacrifices they’ve made.

“I want to thank the veterans here today for their services — this great nation is only free because of all the things they have done,” she said. “We’ve been working for a year and half to update these memorials ... so when veterans come home, they can have the conflicts they

participated in reflected here.”

Dedication of the updated memorial in Port Jefferson was accompanied by the replacement of the site’s damaged existing stonework.

Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) secured funding from her district parks budget to make these updates and other related work in advance of the installation of the new monuments. The Town of Brookhaven owns and maintains the memorial site in Port Jefferson across the road from Village Hall.

Phase 1 of the project has already been completed by expanding the memorials in Stony Brook Village and on Setauket Village Green.

The final phase will comprise an update at Setauket Veterans Memorial Park near Se-Port Deli.

The approximate —Kara Hahn $35,000 cost for the memorials project is being paid largely through donations. Contributions are still being accepted for the phase 2 costs. As of Nov. 10, the project members have raised $29,000 since 2018.

Members of the committee will look to complete phase 3 of their project in time for next year’s Memorial Day. Wolf said the committee should have the funds by then to get the work done.

Robert DeMaria

Robert DeMaria, author, professor and longtime resident of Port Jefferson, died peacefully at his home Sept. 2, shortly before his 91st birthday.

DeMaria earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s and doctorate at Columbia University. He first taught at the University of Oregon, then at Hofstra University and later at Dowling College until he retired. DeMaria was academic dean at The New School for Social Research in New York, and worked as an editor at MacMillan

Publishers, but his first love was writing.

The bulk of his creative work consisted of 25 published novels, including his 1991 “The College Handbook of Creative Writing” which is on its fourth edition. DeMaria also wrote an opera libretto, an off-Broadway play, poetry and short fiction published in various magazines.

He lived on and off in the artist colony of Deia, Mallorca, for 50 years. He set up and directed an overseas program for American students and writers-in-residence at The Mediterranean Institute and, together with his wife Ellen Hope Meyer, published Mediterranean Review, a literary review of artists and writers.

His wife died in 1999.

In 1991, DeMaria started his own digital publishing company, The Vineyard Press, which has published more than 60 books.

“DeBob,” an affectionate name created by his students, was an affable man with a sense of humor and a keen wit. Family said he loved his family, his dogs, boating, social life, good food and wine, and living in Port Jefferson and Deia.

DeMaria is survived by three sons: Robert DeMaria Jr., Nikolas and Michael; one daughter, Amanda; four grandchildren, Alex, David, Tygre and Emma; and his longtime partner, Fran Zak.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Arthur; daughters, Catherine, Ann, Margaret and Ellen; six grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth and Jane; brother, Robert; along with many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, and brother, Barry.

Services were held at the St. James R.C. Church, July 6. Interment was at the St. James R.C. Churchyard Cemetery.

Mary Alice Serdock, of Stony Brook, died July 2. She was 86.

She was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Queens, and was the daughter of Marie and Charles Fox. Serdock was a retired real estate broker and member and active participant of the Lending Aids Society, Theatre Three, Rosary Altar Society, Three Village Meals on Wheels and Three Village Historical Society. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, watching television and gardening.

High Schoolers Learn Sustainability with State Fish

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students recently visited the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium to observe a centuries-old aquaculture technique — to sustain the populations of brook trout, the New York State fish.

A heritage strain of fertilized eggs was collected at the facility and safely transported back to a 55-gallon tank at the school, where students will care for this environmentally sensitive species.

“Similar to the North America river otter, brook trout are classified as a true indicator species that act as a barometer of environmental health,” science teacher Jonathan Maletta said. “Their presence or absence tells a story about

our ambient environmental conditions.

When water runs clean and clear, they survive and thrive.”

According to Maletta, as part of a conservation effort, AP students and Environmental Club members at the high school will plant trees in strategic areas, along local streams and rivers, to create a canopy in order to reduce stream temperatures and mitigate adverse anthropogenic impacts that run counter to the dynamic forces of nature.

“In this high-paced, tech world it is nice to change the style of learning every once in a while, to unravel the steadfast scientific methods that have stood the test of time,” Maletta said.

PJHS Girls Tennis Team Lauded for Successful Season Members of the Port Jefferson girls varsity tennis team were recently honored along with coach Dennis Christofor at the Suffolk County Tennis Coaches Association awards dinner for a successful season.

Senior Hana Ali received the Sportsmanship Award and freshman Nicolina Giannola earned All-County honors for her exceptional singles play. Sierra Welsch, Aamna Ali and Natalie McGuigan earned All-League honors for their excellent singles and doubles play throughout the season. New additions to the team Jasmine Adams and Isabelle Roberts (not pictured) helped to secure a third-place 7-3 League VI record.

Sherwood Emerson Lewis Sr, of Marion, Massachusetts, died peacefully in the presence of his family members Oct. 31 at Sippican nursing home in Marion.

He fell ill in 2010 with a progressive and debilitating illness. He was 77 years old.

Sherwood was born in Port Jefferson to loving parents, Howard Sr. and Ethel DuVal Lewis. While employed in the late 1970s at Long Island Lighting Company, Sherwood attained a class-A welder rating. He received a LILCO award for designing an exhaust ash bearing protector.

He leaves behind his brother Robert Lewis, a family historian in Setauket (and wife Barbara). Sherwood is predeceased by his parents, and siblings Pearl Lewis Hart, Ethel Barbara Lewis Lee, Hazel Lewis and Howard Lewis Jr. Sherwood is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie June Davis Lewis of Dennis Port, Massachusetts; and their children, Rolinda A. Lewis, Gwen M. Haddad, Arliena P. Feldmar (Peter R.), Nicole R. Lewis, Kim M. Lewis and Sherwood E. Lewis Jr. He is the loving granddad of 12 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Nov. 7 at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Wareham, Massachusetts. Services were followed by a funeral procession to Centre Cemetery in Wareham.

Sherwood’s most precious accomplishment was being a loving father. This warmhearted man of extraordinary talents will be greatly missed.

Comsewogue Students’ Mosaic Close to Completion

The Art Honor Society and students in the advanced studios and murals class are putting the finishing touches on a mosaic that spans the entire center of the room. Fully designed by students, it consists of intricately placed pieces of hand-cut glass that reflect in the light of surrounding windows, making the whole piece sparkle.

The project, which began construction three years ago, was the brainchild of Assistant Superintendent Joe Coniglione.

“It has been a labor of love,” he said The area on which the mosaic now sits was once a pit where students could sit and socialize.

Eventually, it was filled in with concrete and a mural was painted over it. However, over the years the floor aged and the concrete began to crack, prompting Coniglione to push for something sturdier.

“My thought process was rather than to paint it and have it crack again, we could have our amazingly talented student do a mosaic,” he said.

He brought his vision to Gina Melton, an art teacher at the high school, who ran with it.

“Both [Coniglione] and I are Italians so we appreciate mosaics,” she said jokingly. “However, mosaics are beautiful, and we figured if they could last through Pompeii, hopefully they will last through Comsewogue.”

Beginning in September, administrators and teachers began the first step in the business department revamp when it began offering a virtual enterprise business class to seniors The six-credit course offered through SUNY Farmingdale allows students to essentially run a virtual business, specifically a clothing business, which was chosen by the students.

Mosca said the class is made up of 10 students and will act as a liaison for the committee on how they can further improve the curriculum for future students.

The principal also mentioned that members of the committee donated cubicles, desks and other office materials to mimic a real-life business setting.

“They are getting real-world experience — they are our pioneers and they are going to be working closely with the committee,” Mosca said.

making sure they included the school’s warrior logo, and aspects of the surrounding area of Port Jefferson Station, including the signature cherry tree outside the school’s window. They also added a starry night sky, as homage to Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “The Starry Night,” which is a favorite among many students.

After the design was approved, students began to install the 2 million pieces, transitioning from glass to tile over time. They have to cut the pieces, lay them out and glue them down.

Melton admitted the project has been a learning curve.

“The first year the students were a little hesitant because it was so new,” she said. “545 square feet of space is a daunting task, but now that they’re seeing everything coming together,

they’re very proud of it. I can’t even tell you how blessed I am to have the kids I have.”

For students who built the project, the process has had its good and bad times.

“It’s certainly resulted in many cuts and scratches over the years,” Art Honor Society Vice President Alexa Bonacci said. She does not participate in any sports and said most people she knows work on it at least three days per week. “This is something so many people are attached to,” society secretary Maison Anwar said. “When you see all the different techniques throughout the piece it makes you feel like everybody has a piece of themselves.”

The project was delayed because of the floor crack and the group of students subsequently having to redo the backboard. The original design was thrown out over the summer, forcing students to have to design much of the project themselves. This has led the district to host what they call “mosaic workshops,” enabling students to work on the project for entire days at a time. “We made a lot of headway in those days,” Melton said.

Coniglione praised the impact of the program on students.

“You would be surprised if you sat in Gina’s classroom for a day and saw students who struggle elsewhere in school,” he said. “They excel in her class because she allows students to find their creativity, and finds something good in every person,” he said.

Melton struggled to hold back tears.

“All of us are here to unite and break course for Dara,” Dara’s father Shelly Cohen said. “We’re looking to make a difference and these people are coming out to help our daughter.”

Tickets were $40 for the three-hour event and the outcome was a huge success.

Although Dara couldn’t be in attendance, she video-called in and was grateful for the response given in her honor.

Known for her popular social media posts chronicling her journey, Dara’s goal has been to help other people struggling as well.

“She’s an amazing person,” Dara’s mother Karen Deangelis, said. “Dara has made an impact on other people and has a tremendous amount of support ... Hopefully we can help other people, too.”

Remembering Vets U.S. Should Pass New Trade Agreement Each and Every Day

Veterans Day events across Long Island have inspired children to sing, bands to play, politicians to speak and servicemen to march in parades.

Many Long Islanders came out to exhibit unwavering support for veterans on this national holiday. But with so many veterans facing hardships, such as food insecurities, joblessness, homelessness and health issues — some servicerelated — more needs to be done each and every day.

There are many ways our readers can help the men and women of the armed forces long after Veterans Day is over. Long Island organizations are always looking for help, year-round, whether it’s donating time, money, clothing or gently used items.

Here are a few groups, where you might lend a hand: • Long Island Cares Inc. — The Harry Chapin Food Bank: This Hauppauge-based center has been helping veterans, military personnel and their families since 2010.

According to the nonprofit, more than 1,200 veterans per month typically receive support from its regional food bank through many of their programs. Long Island Cares will provide 500 veterans with holiday meals this year. The food bank is able to do this in part thanks to an $11,000 donation expected from Steven Castleton, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army. Long Island Cares also offers the Veterans Mobile Outreach Unit, the VetsWork program and Military Appreciation Tuesdays where all Long Islanders can help by donating food items or money.

• United Veterans Beacon House: Headquartered in Bay Shore, this organization provides housing throughout Long Island for veterans. According to its website, on any given day more than 255 men, women and children throughout the tristate area have received services ranging from help with homelessness to treating PTSD, addiction and more. The organization can always use coats, gently used clothing and furniture.

• Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University: Located on SBU’s west campus, interested people can help out by assisting the home’s residents during their recreation programs and trips, or simply by sitting and talking with the men and women.

• Northport VA Medical Center: The VA presents opportunities where community members can volunteer or donate their time or money. A cash donation can be used by the VA to buy items for patients including hygiene products and refreshment supplies. The hospital also collects items such as magazines, coffee, and new or gently used clothing.

Some veterans are doing well, but sometimes they could use a little company. Many people at the senior centers and retirement homes would welcome a visit, so they can share a story, or have someone even record it for future generations.

Long Island has the highest concentration of vets in New York state. These men and women are our neighbors. Make some time to find a vet in your community.

While Washington, D.C., is hallmarked today by unprecedented divisiveness, with House Democrats trying to take down a sitting president, Congress has the opportunity to rise above politics, work together, and deliver a decisive win for the American worker by ending the North American Free Trade Agreement and passing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, in 2018, the state of New York alone exported $20.3 billion to Canada and Mexico, including top exports such as metal products, machinery, computer, electronic products and more. The ability to rebalance and modernize trade between these vital trading partners will mean freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in New York and all of North America.

In fact, according to the United States International Trade Commission, the ratification of USMCA would mean 176,000 new jobs and $68 billion in new economic growth. This boost is thanks to

the inclusion of key provisions that level the playing field for American workers.

USMCA makes new enforceable labor standards a core part of the agreement, improving wages and labor conditions all across North America.

Its innovative rules of origin will encourage more goods and material to be manufactured in the United States and ensure the benefits of USMCA are targeted at North American workers.

In modernizing trade in a 21st century economy, USMCA provides strong and effective protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights critical to driving innovation while supporting American jobs.

Negotiations on this trade deal with Mexico and Canada were completed over a year ago and has been given the green light by our neighbors to the north and south. Unfortunately, there’s only one major obstacle facing this important trade deal — Congress — but not in the way you might think.

In this polarizing time, you may be surprised to learn that USMCA has

wide bipartisan support — enough to pass Congress through both the House and Senate. However, in order to pass Congress, first there must be a vote. There are times when we have to uncomfortably confront and debate important issues where there is disagreement and that’s OK, but where we can find common ground, we should be more than eager to do so.

Unfortunately, House Democratic leadership has been dragging its feet, refusing to put USMCA on the House floor for a vote and smothering potential further economic growth.

Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed unprecedented economic growth all across our great nation. House leadership must immediately bring USMCA to a vote to ratify this vital trade deal, level the playing field for American companies and provide a well-deserved victory for the American worker in New York and across the country.

Trump’s Alternative Universe In his reply in the Oct. 17 Village Times Herald [“What Trump supporters believe in”] to William Schaefer’s Sept.

26 letter [“The mystery of Trump’s loyal base”], letter writer George Altemose, with his usual condescending false bonhomie, spends the first column telling us what Schaefer did not say and calling his analysis “gratuitous and erroneous.”

The next two columns reintroduce us to President Donald Trump’s alternative universe. Claiming Trump and Trumpists believe in the rule of law, he first cites one of Trump’s most egregious violations of U.S. law and (Senate-ratified) international treaty, followed since 1967 and reinforced by the 1997 Flores settlement and 2015 law, that asylum seekers, regardless of how they came to the U.S., were not criminals: Attorney General Jeff Sessions (R) reversed this policy in 2018, so that immigrants’ children could be kidnapped and scattered God knows where. Altemose

then irrelevantly and erroneously discusses the Second Amendment to the Constitution, clearly ignoring its leading clause and what James Madison and Alexander Hamilton thought about “well-regulated militias.”

Trump clearly despises the Constitution.

He calls the emoluments clause “phony,” systematically rejecting Congress’s constitutional oversight and subpoena power, actually claiming recently in federal court (so far unsuccessfully) that, as president, he could not be investigated or prosecuted (by anyone, I would add), even for shooting someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue. Trump routinely calls all who oppose him “liars,” “human scum” and “traitors,” including the diplomats who testified to his abuse of power and violation of election law in pressuring Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, not to mention his betrayal of the Kurds that allowed Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to carve

up northern Syria.

In the third column of his letter, Altemose states, “[Trumpists] recognize the great strides [sic] we have made in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.” This from a man who has, in this newspaper, first denied that warming and climate change were occurring, then that CO2 was accumulating, then falsely denying that industries were the major contributors to the undeniable, huge increase since about 1970. This while his hero was gutting every regulation limiting fossil-fuel-burning pollution, from coalfired power plants to car fuel efficiency, promoting oil drilling in the Arctic, etc.

Caught Between a Social Dog and a Smelly Place

ou know the face dogs make when they’re taking care of their business?

I’m not talking about number one. I’m talking about the big whopper: number two.

For many dogs, I imagine that is the equivalent of the human concentration face, as we ponder everything from what we should have for dinner, to the best route home in a traffic jam, to the best use of our D. None time on a Friday night when we’re of the above exhausted but

My dog must know that I’m watching him closely because every time he finds exactly the right spot to release the contents of his bowels, he turns his back to me. Before he enters his squatting position, he looks back over his shoulder to make sure no one or everyone is watching him. He’s easily distracted in the moment of separation from his solid waste.

I respect his wishes and give him his moment of privacy once he starts the process.

Now, of course, much as we might watch them as they relieve themselves, I know that they watch us closely, wondering why we’re so meticulous, or not, as the case may be, about scooping up everything they’ve dropped.

My dog still seems to think that he’s doing sufficient cleanup duties by kicking a few blades of grass in the general direction of his creation.

He starts tugging on the leash immediately after that, sending a nonverbal signal from his neck to my hand, as if to say, “I got this one, let’s move to that flower bed where Marshmallow left me a

secret scented note.”

As I bent down recently to clean up his mess, he saw one of his favorite couples. That’s not exactly a fair characterization, as almost any combination of two people would immediately rank among his favorites if one or both of them came over to him and rubbed his stomach while he turned over on his back and dangled his paws in the air, as if he were at a canine nail salon. The challenge for me, as he was pulling, tugging and twisting on the leash, was to do the impossible: Chat with his human friends, keep him from knocking one or both of them over with his enthusiasm and politely scoop up his poop.

I waited for a moment to retrieve my retriever’s droppings, hoping that he’d calm down enough to allow me to bend my knees and lift the boulders from the ground. No such luck, as he seemed to be playing twist-theleash-around-the-human-legs game.

One of the many sensory problems with

my dog’s poop is that the longer it remains in place, the more it seems to spread out and sink into the ground. Knowing this, I was eager to bag it and to move on during our walk.

Just as the couple finally disengaged from my dog and his leash, another dog and his owner appeared, causing my dog’s tail to wag so violently that it looked like those whirling propellers on an old airplane. While my dog darted and retreated from his much bigger and more mellow friend, I got farther away from his droppings. In the back of my mind, I wondered whether I could, just this once, leave his biodegradable droppings where they landed.

When the other dog and his owner took off, my dog and I returned to the expanding pile.

I’m convinced that my dog watched the entire pickup routine with rapt fascination, knowing he’d succeeded in extending the process into something considerably more challenging for the human scrunching his nose at the other end of the leash.

The Beauty and Pleasures of the Croatian and Montenegro Coasts

C

ontinuing our sailboat-and-diesel cruise down the Dalmatian Coast on the Adriatic, we next stopped in Split, the second largest city in Croatia. Again, located against the backdrop of steep limestone mountains, Split is particularly known for its beaches and Diocletian’s Palace. Built for the Roman emperor, Diocletian, at the turn of the fourth century, and built like a Roman military fortress, the palace was at one time the home of thousands of inhabitants and its 200 buildings are surrounded by white stone walls.

Today, the palace is a sprawling Romanesque destination spot for tourists, and it also offers bistros, hotels, shops and a cathedral, some of which are underground.

pires throughout the centuries, including that of Austria-Hungary and Venice. Its importance, because of its coastal location and proximity to both Europe and the East, was as a trading center. Now it is a picturesque stop on the Dalmatian Coast.

With the mountains along the shore getter ever steeper, we cruised on to Dubrovnik on the southern coast of Croatia. The Old Town is surrounded by massive walls, extended until the 17th century, and features fabulous examples of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture.

Paved with limestone and lined with shops and restaurants, the city is built along the shore and up the sides of the mountains, a natural magnet for photographers. There is even a cable car to ascend the undeveloped upper mountainsides.

We rode back down in one such car at sunset, marveling at the beauty of the city as the lights came on below us in the houses and shops, and on the many boats in the distant harbor.

Dubrovnik is particularly known for its wealth and its diplomacy. The first was much the result of the second. During the many centuries of warfare and strife among the surrounding empires, the rulers of Dubrovnik,

established along the doge and city council pattern of Venice, were able to avoid invasion.

They paid tribute to the sultan of the Ottoman Empire and to others throughout the years by using the wealth they accumulated from their favorable trading position along the coast and from the sale of their precious natural resource: salt.

Further evidence of their diplomatic skill extends even to the American Revolution. They were able to provide ships that carried pelts from Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York to Marseilles, France, because they had gained the status of safe passage from the colonists and were not fired upon during hostilities.

Slave trading was abolished in Dubrovnik, then part of the Republic of Ragusa, as early as 1418. The city, along with its neighbor to the north, Split, is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. And although Dubrovnik was heavily shelled in the early 1990s from Bosnia-Herzegovina, the city has been carefully rebuilt to authentically reflect its medieval and renaissance history and architecture.

reconstruction has replaced the demolished tops and roofs. Dubrovnik is the pearl of the Adriatic and the city that attracts the most visitors to Croatia.

Last along the coast is Montenegro, named by the Italian sailors as “black mountain” for the steepness and hence frequent cloud cover that blocked out the sun above the mountainsides. Montenegro is a republic and offers tourists some of the most rugged terrain in Europe.

There is much wild greenery and most of the areas have only one lane roads. We visited an olive oil farm while there, enjoying sight of the ancient methods of making olive oil compared now with computerized processes.

On the way, we stopped to overlook the Bay of Kotor, a strategically important site of great natural beauty. Though not a member of the European Union yet, it is the government’s goal to join by 2025. Nonetheless the country uses euros and looks to develop into an elite tourist destination. At this time, its economy is dependent on direct foreign investment, and the Chinese and Arabs are competing there for developmental control.
