Village Residents split on PJSD bond proposal during informational meeting

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Those who attended a meeting at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson school district Oct. 2 seeking clarity on how the public might be leaning regarding a $30 million bond proposal went home empty handed.

About 25 community members of the 100 or so attendees voiced their opinion on the district’s proposal, which administrators presented last month, for upgrades and improvements across the district during the meeting.

If the approximately two dozen speakers are a representative sampling of the community, taxpayers seem to be split down the middle two months out from a tentative referendum vote scheduled for Dec. 5.

The proposal has seemingly polarized the community, with those in favor providing student health and safety, as well as maximizing academic and athletic opportunities as evidence to support voting in favor of permitting the district to borrow the money.

“I just thought it would be interesting to get a different perspective on it, you know, like from a kid who’s actually in high school rather than someone who is not,” high school senior Billy Scannell said. “In the high school they offer over 20 [advanced placement] courses and a vast array of clubs, with an award-winning music program … the school has a lot to offer.

If you really look at it, it becomes clear why Earl L. Vandermeulen was named one of the

five Blue Ribbon Schools on Long Island. With AP courses and the classrooms, it’s growing because the school just gives you so many opportunities to learn new things and explore.

So you say the number of kids isn’t growing, but the opportunities are and so many kids just want to be a part of that.”

Those against, including the Port Jefferson Village mayor and board of trustees, have cited uncertainty surrounding a lawsuit, which includes the village and district, against the Long Island Power Authority, that could result in substantial losses in property tax revenue for both entities, as enough evidence to support a “no” vote. No expected resolution timetable exists regarding the lawsuit, which has been pending for several years. Others have said they’re not sure they agree with the district’s assessment that each of the 21 items on the bond wish list are at a stage of requiring immediate remedy. Others have said a district-produced enrollment study projecting the number of students in the district to remain flat over the next several years is a sign that expansion of facilities doesn’t make sense at the current time either.

“How do I authorize the community to spend $30 million before I know if the school district is secure,” said Ted Lucki, a Port Jeff resident, former school board trustee and former mayor of Belle Terre Village. “How do I vote for that? It’s irresponsible. I think timing is everything. There’s a gorilla in the room. What are we, naïve? How do we justify that? It’s inappropriate for me to vote for a bond when

District Superintendent Paul Casciano reiterated points he’s made throughout the process of presenting the bond to the public.

He said it’s difficult to know when the LIPA issue will be resolved, and in the meantime the buildings still need fixing. He also said the list has been pared down from the original $100 million incarnation from when the process began about three years ago to include only the things the district views as essential.

If passed, the $30 million project would feature a three-story addition to a wing of the high school, additional classrooms at the high school and elementary school, a turf football field at the high school, lights for the Scraggy Hill Road athletic fields, among many more improvements. The district’s total budget for the 2017-18 school year is about $43 million.

If passed, the bond would cost the average taxpayer between $400 and $1,000 annually during the 15-year life of the payment plan.

Deputy Superintendent Sean Leister plans to make available a property tax calculator in the coming weeks on the district website that would allow residents to see how the bond would impact their annual bill.

Casciano pledged to schedule more walkthroughs of the buildings and areas slated for upgrades prior to the vote and even left open the possibility to conduct a virtual building tour, which those unable to physically attend a walk-through could view at their own leisure.

The board of education is slated to solidify the proposal and vote on establishing Dec. 5 for the referendum during its next public meeting Oct. 10. A survey will remain accessible for members of the public to weigh in on the proposal on the district website until Oct. 9.

With Plank & Rank, a two-player tabletop game that combines the fun of a board game with the strategy of a card game, professional graphic artist Paul Partlow was one of five finalists in Hasbro’s 2016 Next Great Family Game challenge — a worldwide competition that aims to discover and develop the next Monopoly or Clue.

Partlow, 36, who currently lives in Miller Place, didn’t win that challenge but was soon contacted by a multimedia company called Golden Bell Studios, whose Long Island-based owners saw the board game through an Indiegogo campaign online. The company told him it was interested in helping with distribu-

Part of the tentative budget also includes a $40.2 million list of new capital projects to be funded by bonds and reserves over a four-year period beginning in 2018, including $18 million for road repairs, drainage, traffic safety and street lighting projects; $8 million to cap the town landfill; and $6 million for park and recreation facility upgrades and equipment, among others.

The town board will host a public hearing to allow the community to weigh in on the budget Nov. 9 at Town Hall.

Brookhaven Town plans to spend $294.1 million in the 2018 fiscal year, about a $12 million increase compared to 2017’s budget, though the town won’t need much help from the public to do so.

Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) presented his tentative operating budget for 2018 to the public during a meeting Sept. 28. Romaine referred to the plan as a “taxpayers’ budget.”

“My job is to bring in the most cost effective budget, and that’s what we think we’ve done here,” Romaine said, thanking the town’s finance department commissioner Tamara Wright and chief of operations Matt Miner for their work in presenting a balanced budget. He also lauded the town’s AAA bond rating as a valuable asset in putting together a spending plan.

“We have a structurally balanced budget for the last few years and we have wound up each of the last few years with a surplus, which kind of distinguishes us in terms of our fiscal soundness,” Romaine said.

The increase, when compared to the 2017 fiscal year, can be attributed in large part to the disbanding of the formerly incorporated Mastic Beach Village, which means some services provided to residents of the village will again become Brookhaven’s responsibility. In addition, health insurance costs for town employees are expected to increase by 10 percent in 2018, and contractually mandated raises will go up by about $1.7 million. The town’s debt requirements will be about 5 percent higher in 2018. Despite the increases, if passed, the spending plan would maintain all services provided to residents during 2017, though no new programs would be funded, according to Romaine. Less than $2 million in reserve funds were needed to balance the budget, compared to about $3.5 million in 2017.

A typical Brookhaven Town resident living outside of an incorporated village should expect to see an increase of about $11 in their town property taxes in 2018 from the town’s general funds, excluding special districts such as sewer and high-

Incidents and arrests Sept. 27–Oct. 1 Battling with police

A 50-year-old man from Port Jefferson was drinking alcohol from an open container while near the intersection of Main Street and Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson at about 4 p.m. Sept. 27 when he was approached by a village constable, according to police. When approached by the constable, the man grabbed her arm, swung her around and punched her, police said.

Two other bystanders attempted to subdue the accused man, who swung his elbows repeatedly, causing a laceration to the lower lip of one of the bystanders and hitting the shoulder and neck of the other, police said. Once he was arrested, police said he was screaming obscenities at the officers. He was arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree harassment, disorderly conduct and obstruction of governmental administration.

Little by little

At a home on North Ridge Road in Old Field between March 15 and Sept. 20, a 38-year-old woman from East Setauket stole jewelry, silverware and other personal items, according to police. She was arrested Sept. 28 in Selden and charged with third-degree grand larceny.

Snail mail

Someone stole a mailbox and post from in front of a home on Dogwood Road in Port Jefferson at about 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1, according to police.

Shattered glass

At about 3 a.m. Sept. 28, a 29-year-old woman from Wading River shattered the front and rear windshields of a 2000 Saturn parked outside of a home on Highview Drive in Selden, according to police. She was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

Return scheme

A 34-year-old woman from Nesconset found a cash register receipt for five boxes of baby formula in the parking lot of Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket at about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 28, entered the store, took five boxes of the same item off the shelf, placed them in a shopping cart and proceeded to customer service to return the items for cash, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Green beach

At about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 27, a 24-year-old woman from Stony Brook was seated in a parked 2007 Jeep with a “strong odor of marijuana” while at Cedar Town Beach on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai, according to police. She was given a field appearance ticket.

LIRR property stolen

A North Face backpack containing Long Island Rail Road access keys, security keys and train ignition keys was stolen from a Nissan parked outside of a home on Dorothy Street in Port Jefferson Station at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 1, according to police.

Pharmacy theft

Medicine was stolen from CVS Pharmacy on Route 25A in Setauket at about 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30, according to police.

Rite Aid robbery

At about 1 p.m. Sept. 30, a 31-year-old man from Coram entered Rite Aid on Old Town Road in Selden and demanded cash from an employee and displayed a gun, according to police. The man fled the scene without any money, police said. He was arrested Sept. 30 at about 9 p.m. in Selden and charged with first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree robbery.

Worth the squeeze?

According to Suffolk County Police Department Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers, Suffolk County Police 6th Squad detectives are investigating a robbery that occurred in Stony Brook Sept. 30 at about 7 p.m., in which a masked male entered Jamba Juice, located at 2460 Nesconset Highway, and demanded cash. He left with an unknown amount of money. The investigation is continuing, police said.

Pain in the neck

A credit card was stolen from a 2017 Honda parked outside of a chiropractic office on Middle Country Road in Selden at about 6 p.m. Sept. 27, according to police.

In it to win it

Someone stole assorted scratch off lottery tickets from Speedway gas station on Patchogue Road in Port Jefferson Station at about 4 a.m. Sept. 27, according to police.

Paddled off

A kayak was stolen from in front of the Brookhaven Town public safety building on Harbor Beach Road in Mount Sinai at about 8 a.m. Sept. 18, according to police.

A report was filed Sept. 29.

Running from Dunkin

At Dunkin Donuts on Route 25A in Mount Sinai Sept. 27 at about 12:30 a.m., someone used a block to break the front door and entered the establishment, opened the register, then fled without stealing anything, according to police.

Stony Brook man walks to help others sleep better

By Rita. J. Egan Rita@tbRnewspapeRs.com Step by step, a Stony Brook man is helping to provide a comfortable place to sleep for those in need.

On Sept. 25, 66-year-old Kenny Rogers embarked on a 277-mile walking trip dubbed Miles for Mattresses to raise funds for the Open Door Exchange — an outreach program of the Setauket Presbyterian Church created to collect furniture to distribute to those in need. Rogers said his goal is to raise $22,021 to purchase mattresses and box springs for the 177 people on the furniture bank’s waiting list for the items. The hope is that the walk will generate buzz and inspire donors to contribute to the cause. The organization has an agreement with Big Lots to purchase mattress and box spring sets for an average of $159.

Rogers’ 277-mile mission began at Wider Circle, which the Long Island furniture bank is modeled after, in Silver Spring, Maryland, and will end Oct. 14 at the Open Door Exchange in Port Jefferson Station. Rogers, who is retired from the Suffolk County Department of Social Services and volunteers with Open Door Exchange, said it feels good to be able to give to others. He said it was frustrating at his former job to help people find housing but then they were on their own when it came to furnishings.

The Rev. Kate Jones Calone, director of Open Door Exchange, said more than half a dozen congregants of Setauket Presbyterian Church, of which Rogers is a member, and volunteers from Wider Circle were on hand to cheer him on, and a handful of them walked the first couple of miles with him, while others stayed behind to help out at Wider Circle.

“We had a wonderful reception from Wider Circle,” Calone said.

Arlene Rogers, who accompanied her husband to Maryland, said she was proud of him.

“He has a very big generous heart,” she said. “He is very determined. When he says he’s going to do something, he does it. I back him wholeheartedly.”

Eli Koop, who turned 14 Sept. 25 and is an eighth-grader at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School, also traveled to Maryland to walk the first 14 miles with Rogers.

Rogers said he’ll mostly travel along US Route 1, and along the way he’ll stop at churches to eat and rest. Setauket Presbyterian’s pastor the Rev. Mary Speers, and Calone networked with churches along the route to coordinate the accommodations.

Rogers said he started preparing for the trip in January by walking two miles around his neighborhood and then he slowly increased the distance. Right before his 277-mile mission, he was walking the more than three-mile Setauket-Port Jefferson Station Greenway Trail both ways with a backpack three quarters filled with weights. Walking didn’t always come easy for Rogers. He said the first few years of his life he was unable to do so, and doctors thought he might have cerebral palsy.

However, when he was 4 years old, he said he just started walking one day.

Miles for Mattresses is the second walk he has organized to raise money for charity. In May 2016, Rogers traveled 50 miles on foot from his childhood neighborhood of Chelsea, Brooklyn, to Stony Brook to raise funds for the American Cancer Soci-

ety in honor of his best friend who died of lung cancer.

Speers said church members and others were supportive of his last walk and she knows his current one will be a success, too.

“The Setauket Presbyterian Church is very giving especially when it’s for a mission or to help people,” Speers said.

“They’ll open up their pockets for that. So, the church gave a lot, and lots of his friends

and just people in his world, his former coworkers, people like that really gave a lot, and he felt good doing it.”

The pastor said she was unable to join Rogers in Maryland due to recent hip surgery, so she is looking forward to joining him and others at the end of his trip, even if she needs a golf cart to do so.

“It should be a lot of fun,” Speers said. ”It would be like a victory lap.”

Rogers said while he’s looking forward to seeing everyone at the end of his walk, the end of such a mission leaves him with mixed feelings.

“When you’re done with it — you prepared for something like this — when it’s over, it’s a let down,” Rogers said. “I feel good that I did it, but now what do I do?

This is what I’ve been working for a certain amount of time.”

Calone said Setauket Presbyterian congregants are in awe of Rogers.

“It’s just so inspiring,” Calone said.

“Kenny is just this wonderfully positive and energetic and selfless and generous person who just thinks about really concrete ways that he can help people, and he’s done that his whole life.”

Deer overpopulation is an issue that needs attention

By Alfred J. CossAri Although highly valued for beauty and grace, Suffolk County’s white-tailed deer population exceeds socially and ecologically desirable levels, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

As a result of hunting restrictions, suburban sprawl and the elimination of primary predators (wolves and mountain lions), overpopulation in rural areas caused outstripping of the forest’s natural food supplies. This led to reliance on abundant food supplies in suburban areas. In Suffolk County, motor vehicles are their primary predators. Recognized suburban concerns include an increased incidence of tick-borne Lyme disease, the fear of vehicular accidents and destruction of landscape and agricultural plantings. No less important, however, are the ecological effects of outstripped indigenous plants.

This results in the loss of habitat for migrating birds and other wildlife and the possibility of soil erosion on cliffs and hillsides. The profound reduction in plant diversity may never recover, even after removing deer entirely. The high density of deer population also harms the deer by increasing competition for food and the transmission of diseases and parasites.

Other factors contributing to overpopulation include:

• Inapplicability of traditional hunting methods in suburban areas • Difficulties controlling the deer population at a realistic target level • Absence of an urgency for changes in local laws permitting deer reduction • Need for hunters to use liberalized reduction rules to help control local herds • Insufficient resident awareness of the significance and implications of overpopulation The Borrelia burgdorfori bacterium causes Lyme disease when passed to humans by a deer tick. It is transmitted to ticks from deer blood, their primary food source. Within 30 days of human bacterial inoculation, fever, headaches, tiredness and possible complications like arthritis, nerve paralysis and meningitis occur. Lyme was reported in 5,533 cases in Suffolk County from 2000 to 2015, but the true number is thought to be 55,330. Deer reduction can reduce infection by decreasing the number of infected ticks. Although rodents also carry Borrelia, they are not the tick’s primary source of blood and they do not retain the infection through the winter.

Female deer go into heat every 28 days between October and February and give birth to one to three fawns in the spring.

This produces a doubling of the population every two years. Suffolk’s regular deer hunting season opens the first Sunday in January and closes Jan. 31. Landowners, municipalities and hunters can request

disease can be carried by deer, and their population is getting out of hand. permits for taking an increased number of antlerless deer in season (Deer Management Assistance Program) or hunting deer outside the regular season (Bonus Deer

Damage Permit). Reduction can also be accomplished by capturing deer with drop nets, clover traps or tranquilizer darts for buck neutering or doe immunocontraceptive vaccinations.

On Staten Island, there is a DEC-approved program of buck capturing on designated public or private lands. They are brought to a park facility for a 15-minute vasectomy procedure and the application of an identifying ear tag. In Hastings on Hudson, the Humane Society and Tufts Veterinary School are participating in a reduction program using the PZP-22 (porcine zona pellucida) immunocontraceptive vaccine. High school students participate by obtaining landowners’ permission for property access around feeders and high-priority darting areas. During specified field seasons, the involved properties are marked with identifying flags, and villagers have a hotline for reporting deer sightings directly to the field team. In the first year, the team immobilizes the doe with a tranquilizer dart to insert a time-released vaccine and apply an ear tag. In March of the subsequent year, a dart is used to inject a long-lasting booster immunization without the need for tranquilization.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that communities must consider deer reduction for addressing the adverse health and ecosystem consequences of deer overpopulation.

Greenway Trail cleanup

The Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association will hold its annual fall cleanup of the Setauket-Port Jeff Station Greenway Trail, Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Any community members interested in assisting in the cleanup effort are encouraged to meet at either end of the trail or any spot along its roughly

3.5-mile path. The Port Jeff Station end of the trail is located behind 7-Eleven at 408 Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station. The Setauket end is located near the intersection of North Country Road and Limroy Lane in East Setauket.

“Thanks for supporting the trail and keeping it clean,” representatives from the civic association said in an email about the cleanup.

Remembering Bette Verin

By KAthryn KemPF Many Mount Sinai and Port Jefferson-area residents have fond memories of Bette Verin.

They may have known her as the office manager for dentists Jack Riggio or L. Ward Clarke, with whom she worked until their respective retirements; as the co-owner of Grammas’ Sweets, the iconic ice cream parlor and luncheonette on Main Street in Port Jefferson; or read her column “News of Mount Sinai” in The Port Jefferson Record.

Bette and her then-husband Art Kempf bought Grammas’ in 1974. A long-time resident of Mount Sinai and later, Sound Beach, Bette Verin was an active member of the community.

We are sad to report that Bette died Aug. 28 while vacationing in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

Most recently, she resided in Fort Myers, Florida, with her husband, Donald White, who survives her. Bette is also survived by three daughters, Kathryn Kempf of Montclair, New Jersey; Bobbi Kempf, of Rocky Point; and Norma Kempf Foti, of Annandale, Virginia; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; her brother, Howard “Bud” Vroom of Davenport, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her sister predeceased her.

Born in 1933, at home, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Bette trained as a nurse at Jersey City Medical Center. She and Art, with children Kathryn and Bobbi, moved to Mount Sinai in 1967. Norma Sue was born in 1968.

The family lived on Mount Sinai-Coram Road, across from Randall’s Farm, then a

working dairy farm. Bette chronicled what would soon become a vanishing rural lifestyle in her column for The Port Jefferson Record.

Bette was also was a substitute rural postal carrier in Mount Sinai, and an EMT with Port Jefferson ambulance squad. In the early 1970s, she was a cofounder of the Harbor View Nursery School in Port Jefferson.

Following her divorce, Bette married Ted Verin in 1977, and moved to Scott’s Beach in Sound Beach, where she eventually served as president of the Scott’s Beach Association. Bette was an LPN at Sunrise Assisted Living in East Setauket, which she retired from in 2011.

Bette was an active member of Mount Sinai Congregational Church for over two decades and had many leadership roles there. She led a senior pastor search committee, helped start the junior high program, led the Cherub Choir, served as a deacon and chaired both the Christian education committee and the board of trustees. Along with her late husband, Ted, she started a support group for separated and divorced individuals, sang in the choir and volunteered at the Invited Inn Soup Kitchen in Rocky Point. Upon Ted’s death, Bette helped to establish the memorial garden at the church.

Bette loved the beach, golf, bridge, book club, dancing and a party.

“She was a loving wife, fierce mother, a doting grandmother and a loyal friend,” said her daughter Kathryn Kempf. “Her wish is to be remembered for being fun, which she was … in spades.”

The Long Island Power Authority received notice of the resignation of Suzette Smookler, LIPA’s longest serving trustee, after 11 years of distinguished service. Smookler, of Port Jefferson, used a career in health care and education to be a vocal advocate for energy policy that protected the environment, advanced clean energy and focused on rate affordability, according to LIPA. “It was a privilege to serve on the LIPA board for over a decade,” she said in a press release.

“I was honored to succeed a long-time community advocate and former LIPA board member—the late Edna Gerrard — who believed, as I do, in putting the environment and ratepayers first. I am truly proud of the accomplishments LIPA and PSEG Long Island have made since Superstorm Sandy. We’ve improved our customer service, added a record number of renewables onto our grid, and grant-funded the largest storm hardening program in our history. I want to thank my fellow board members and LIPA CEO Tom Falcone who have shown nothing but respect for my opinions and ideas on Long Island’s energy future.”

Falcone commended Smookler for the job she did while on the board.

to the board and will miss her enthusiasm and passion to make the quality of life better for all of our 1.1 million customers,” he said.

Smookler is currently the director of clinical nutrition and education services at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She served on the Port Jefferson School District board of education from 1996 to 2002, including four years as president.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District has been named a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School, which was announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos Sept. 28.

As part of the U.S. Department of Education, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program represents the full diversity of American schools, recognizing those that exemplify excellence, turnaround stories and closing achievement gaps among student groups.

“This distinction is a result of the value our community places on education and our schools,” said Superintendent Paul Casciano. “Our tradition of excellence is sustained through the tireless efforts of our staff, teachers, administrators, parents and entire school community of the Port Jefferson School District.”

Annually, the school boasts numerous AP Scholars, National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students, who all dem-

onstrate exceptional college-level achievement through their performance on national qualifying exams, in addition to the many athletic, musical, civic and volunteer accomplishments of its students.

Ward Melville gets payback snapping boys golf streak

By Bill landon Two years ago, Port Jefferson’s boys golf team handed Ward Melville a loss that broke a 88-match win streak. The Patriots returned that favor at Port Jefferson Country Club Oct. 3, winning the round by a single stroke to snap the Royals’ undefeated streak this season.

Port Jefferson junior Shane DeVincenzo, a two-time All-County and All-State golfer, came in at one over par in the first wave. Although it wasn’t his best round, shooting a 34, he was pleased with his result.

“My personal best on this course for nine holes is a 32,” DeVincenzo said. “I think it takes confidence more than anything — you go into these matches saying you’re going to win and [that] helps you believe it. If you go into it thinking you might not win, it’s going to be a lot closer.”

The match was a lot closer than it was the first time the two teams met, and that didn’t surprise Port Jefferson head coach Chuck Ruoff.

“It was a competitive match — it came down to three strokes, and Shane shot an incredible round that carried us,” Ruoff said of the Suffolk County runner-up from last season.

“He’s unbelievable. For the remaining matches, if we go out and play the way we’re capable of, I think we’ll end up with the result we want.”

The Patriots may be a young team, with just one senior on the roster, but Ward Melville’s underclassmen were right behind the rest of the pack, like sophomore Palmer Van Tuyl, who shot a 41.

“I hit a bunch of good shots, but Shane DeVincenzo is a tremendous golfer,” Van Tuyl said. “He started off with a few mediumlength par putts, so I was down early. And toward the middle of the round I had a couple of ups and downs for par.”

Port Jeff junior Josh Gelfond, a two-time All-League player, struggled with his ball contact. He shot 40, edging his opponent by two strokes, but has done better than his plus four

performance on his home course.

“My best is a 34, so today I was pretty good around the greens and scrambling, but my ball striking wasn’t the best,” he said. “Normally around the greens is one of the strongest parts of my game, but I need to work on consistency with my iron play.”

Ward Melville head coach Bob Spira said the narrow win was especially gratifying for him after losing to the Royals earlier in the season.

“We practice chipping and putting — the short game is really important,” Spira said of his team’s many workouts at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, the Patriots’ home course.

“The kids golf a lot themselves [outside of the team], and that creates a lot of depth, [despite how] very young we are.”

Ward Melville junior Alexander Korkuc had his short game working for him, but after shooting a 44 left a few strokes out on the green. He looks to improve with four games left in the regular season.

“I thought my chipping and pitching was very good today, but I left a couple of putts short,” he said. “I just misread a couple of putts. As a team we just have to practice harder, work on our drills better and stay positive.”

Ruoff attributes a large part of his team’s success — the Royals went on a 6-0 run to start the season — to the association with Port Jefferson Country Club.

“They love being around the course; the facility provides a lot for them,” Ruoff said.

“They’re able to practice and play, get instruction basically whenever they want, so it’s a very strong relationship.”

Political harmony in dark times This just in: Republicans and Democrats are having a hard time getting along. Having a thorough understanding of that fact, a story that emerged from a Suffolk County Legislature meeting Oct. 3 caught our attention.

According to a spokeswoman from her office, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), the 5th district representative who we have covered since she took office in 2011, became ill during the meeting and was taken to the hospital. As of Oct. 4, the spokeswoman said she was feeling much better, and the trip to the hospital was taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Two days before, Hahn ran in the Soles for All Souls 5K Race and completed the run in 26 minutes, 17 seconds.

In any event, we wish her a speedy recovery and hope all is well going forward, and we are not alone in that sentiment.

Each year prior to local elections, TBR News Media hosts political candidates for debates to allow them ample time to lay out their platforms and constructively discuss important local issues. Democrats and Republicans sit down and discuss the most important aspects of everyday life for our neighbors. At the end of the discussion, our editorial board reaches a consensus on which candidate we would like to endorse. The issue comes out the Thursday before Election Day each year. This year will be no different.

Hahn and her opponent, Republican Edward Flood, are currently scheduled to make an appearance this Friday, Oct. 6. On the morning of Oct. 4, Flood called our main office, having also heard of what took place at the Legislature meeting, and offered to reschedule the debate should Hahn need more time to recover.

We have not decided whom we will endorse in this race — Hahn is an exemplary advocate for our community who has served as the majority leader in the Legislature and has headed up several committees — but we would like to take this opportunity to commend Flood for reaching across party lines to put a fellow human’s wellbeing above politics.

To our local politicians, keep up the good, bipartisan work, and continue to remain above the divisive political fray.

Resident voting ‘no’ on bond proposal Right now, I’d vote “no” on the school district’s proposed $30 million bond package. Some say timing is everything. If it is, the latest proposal from the Port Jefferson School District provides a classic example of bad timing. As described in the September 14 issue of The Port Times Record, [Port Jeff school district seeking $30M bond...], the district’s administration is recommending that residents take on a $30 million long term obligation before they can know much about their future resources and ability to pay off the bond should our current tax income from the power plant decline substantially. I wasn’t a fly

on the wall when this proposal was discussed but it’s tempting to wonder if someone suggested, “Now would be a good time to get this passed because if voters become convinced our income will take a big hit in the future, we’ll never get it passed.” I doubt many of us would take on a large multi-year personal obligation if we suspected a major reduction in our ability to pay was fairly likely.

Recommending a commitment of this magnitude without presenting a plan to pay it back should an important source of income dry up suggests a lack of planning, or perhaps a willingness to take advantage of voters

who have consistently approved administration proposals without asking the hard questions, or more faith in a benign future than I can muster. And then there are the inevitable overruns, unanticipated expenses and routine budget growth to contend with. Nobody knows if we will be able to comfortably repay the $30 million over the life of the bond. Given the information we have, I think it would be unwise to approve this proposal as presented although one or two individual needs that could be paid for in the foreseeable future might be acceptable.

Don’t vote for a constitutional convention I am writing to encourage every New Yorker to vote “no” this November to stop New York state from wasting millions of tax dollars on a constitutional convention that would, at best, reaffirm the status quo and could, at worst, take away our rights and protections.

The state Constitution guarantees the right to a free public education, to join a union, to protect our health, to care for the needy, to safe jobs, and to protect state lands and forests.

These rights — and many more — are at risk if a constitutional convention is convened.

Don’t trust everything you read. It is not going to be a “People’s Convention,” as some well-financed people would like you to believe. History has shown that the vast majority

of delegates would come from the same political apparatus we deal with in Albany right now.

Past constitutional conventions have been costly extensions of state legislative sessions, filled with political posturing, with the same politicians and special interest groups running the show.

Of the 186 delegates to the 1967 convention, 154 held public office. That means lawmakers elected as delegates could double their salaries and significantly fatten their pensions. And the overall cost is absurd. Estimates are that a convention could cost taxpayers between $50 million and $100 million.

If we believe changes are necessary, there is a less costly and more effective way to accomplish them than a convention.

Specifically, the New York State

Constitution can be amended through the state Legislature, as it has been more than 200 times, most recently in 2015 to create an independent commission on redistricting, and to allow the Legislature to save money by going paperless for proposed bills.

With all of the issues we’re facing — the possible loss of health care coverage for millions of New Yorkers, and keeping public education accessible and affordable — there are better ways to spend our hard-earned tax dollars than on an unnecessary convention.

I urge you to vote “no” on the Nov. 7 ballot referendum to hold a constitutional convention.

If it weren’t for you, we might be living with even more unimaginable tragedies.

For reasons most of us, fortunately, can only imagine at a distance, people are tormented by destructive urges.

When these moments arise, hopefully, a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor or someone in a position to recognize the signs can step in and offer support, while redirecting that person toward a

to school, we clap at the end of their concerts and we feed them their meals before sending them to bed for the night.

When I was in junior high school, I read books such as “Lord of the Flies” and “The Crucible,” which my teacher Mrs. Wickle suggested were an important way to look at the “dark side” of the heart.

At the time, I found the subjects depressing and unnecessary. Why, I thought, did I have to read about such violence or mass hysteria.

In the modern world, we are in the crosshairs of everything from overseas terrorists to storms and earthquakes and, yes, to people without an apparent ideology whose final act before they take their own lives is to commit mass murder.

We look at the faces of the victims and feel the loss of those we never met.

They look like our friends and neighbors, and we know their smiles, once filled with potential, will never again light up a room.

At the same time, hundreds of people lined up for hours to do what they could — give blood — to help save those in immediate need.

Clearly, a few people in our midst have headed toward the dark side of their hearts and minds, allowing the demons that plague their lives to release the unthinkable and unimaginable.

Maybe, in addition to the discussion about gun control, we ought to appreciate the legion of mental health professionals who dedicate themselves to helping those battling against destructive urges, whose thoughts wander into the wilderness of despair.

The toll their work often takes on some of these mental health helpers is enormous, as other people’s nightmares leap from the minds of their patients into their own subconscious. The flow of information travels both ways, putting psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers at risk.

These mental health workers often talk to others in their field to help them get through the difficulties of their jobs.

They listen, they encourage, they become involved and, ultimately, they can and so often do set people on better courses in their lives, helping them feel better and live better.

By the time you read this, perhaps we’ll have an idea of what triggered the madness from this latest gunman, and maybe it will have less to do with offthe-rails thinking than with an ideology that encourages mass violence.

If it wasn’t lone-wolf insanity, but, rather, someone following instructions, we ought to find the ones who encouraged these senseless and brutal murders.

Either way, we ought to dedicate more resources to battling with the burden of a broken brain. If, somehow, a mental health professional can redirect someone who might otherwise commit incomprehensible violence, that person not only has saved a life but may have turned a would-be murderer into another conscientious citizen lining up for hours to give blood instead of planning to spill it.

Music can soothe the soul in troubled times

n the last few weeks we have been subjected to a constant bombardment of tragic news. The horrific mass killings in Las Vegas is just the latest. We have lived through reports of the sequential hurricanes that have killed, maimed and destroyed lives and property in Texas, Florida, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. We have agonized for the men, women and children caught in the Mexican earthquakes.

We ran away from news of the carnage the other night and took refuge in art. The glorious embrace of Giacomo Puccini and his soaring arias of “La Bohème,” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, welcomed us.

Puccini, you may well know, is considered one of the two most famous Italian opera composers of the 19th century, the other being Giuseppe Verdi. What I didn’t know is that he was the offspring of a musical dynasty in Lucca that included his father and the fathers preceding them as far back as his great-great-grandfather. All of these ancestors studied music at Bologna, wrote music for the church and, aided by their genes and family connections, were distinguished in their time.

Puccini’s first opera, “Le Villi,” premiering in 1884, when he was 26, was well enough received, and his subsequent “Manon Lescaut” was a triumph.

His personal life, however, was as riveting as his librettos. He eloped with his married, former piano student at the risk of being shunned. They did eventually marry, after another husband killed her womanizing husband. By

coincidence, Puccini’s opera premiered the same week as Verdi’s last opera, “Falstaff,” and talk began of Puccini being the natural heir to Verdi. At least that was what George Bernard Shaw is reported to have said.

Puccini’s next three operas are among the most popular and most often produced: “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly.”

When “La Bohème” premiered in Turin in 1896, Arturo Toscanini conducted it, and it was immediately popular. The story is of four young artists, all starving and freezing as they work in a garret in Paris and experience the pleasures and pains of young love. The opera is at turns joyful with the energy of youth and tragic with the premature death from tuberculosis of Mimi, the seamstress, and Rodolfo’s love. As a young man in Milan, Puccini lived the life he wrote about, once sharing a single herring with three others, as portrayed in the opera.

Puccini almost died in a car accident before finishing “Madama Butterfly” but then went on to complete what is now one of the most loved operas in the world. “Tosca” followed; then

“La Fanciulla del West,” a plot set in America; “La Rondine;” and a threeact opera, including “Gianni Schicchi,” which contains my favorite aria, “O mio babbino caro.” “Turandot” was his final opera, finished after his death by his associates from his sketches, and offering the memorable, “Nessun dorma.”

Publicity about his personal life continued when his wife accused their maid of having an affair with Puccini, who was known to wander off the reservation. The maid then committed suicide, and an autopsy revealed that she had died a virgin. Puccini’s wife was accused of slander, found guilty and sentenced to five months in jail; but a payment by Puccini spared her that experience.

Ultimately 11 of Puccini’s operas are among the 200 most performed operas in the world, and the abovementioned three are in the top 10. Only Verdi and Mozart have had more operas performed. By his death in 1924, Puccini had earned $4 million from his works.

I hope this excursion in art has helped you, as it did me, to escape at least briefly from the omnipresent bad news.
