Donald A. Roth

Donald A. Roth of Venice, Florida, formerly of East Setauket, died June 14.

He was born Feb. 7, 1940, to Arthur and Genevieve Roth in Rockville Centre. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Patricia (Trish). He was the loving father to Virginia (Judd) Petrone, Arthur T. Roth II (Julie) and Jonathan Roth; stepfather to Nicole Thomas and Robert (Julie) Hamilton; beloved grandfather — “Poppy” — to Kristin (Mike) Haendler, Alex and Megan Hayes, Katie and Thomas Roth, Victoria, Christiana, Patricia and Mackenzie Thomas, and Emma and Lilly Hamilton; dear brother of Carol (Jay) Madigan; and uncle to J. P. and Mary Madigan.

He was a graduate of La Salle Military Academy and C. W. Post. He had a career in banking for 60 years. Don gave his time to many organizations over the years. He was chairman of the Smithtown Hunt for a number of years. He was director of the Suffolk County Girl Scouts, director of Nissequogue Golf Club and member of the Elks in Venice, to name a few.

He was a wonderful and loving friend and will be missed by many. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church June 22. Interment followed at the Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Frank F. Belsito, 85, a longtime community resident, died July 3.

He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Brooklyn, the son of Margaret and Vincenzo Belsito.

Frank Belsito was the beloved companion of Doris Brennan; brother of Louise Pastorelli; uncle to Zina and Sharif Fayache, Victor and Janice Pastorelli; and stepfather and stepgrandfather to Michelle, Kenneth, Patrick, Kevin, Sean, Kyle, Meghan and Kelsey Brennan.

He was the commander of American Legion Pearl Harbor Post 1941; a past New York State commander of Catholic War Veterans; chairman and founder of the annual Calverton National Cemetery Memorial Day flag placement program; chairman of Purple Heart Monument at Calverton for those lost or injured at Pearl Harbor; chairman of the Korean War Monument placed at Suffolk County Memorial Park in Hauppauge; and an overall tireless volunteer for his fellow veterans.

Belsito was afforded full military honors at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Donations made to Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or The Long Island State Veterans Home in his memory would be appreciated

Maureen Collette Grzymala

Maureen Collette Grzymala, 86, a longtime community resident, died July 10. She was born Feb. 2, 1932, in New York City to Alice and Thomas Flanagan.

Maureen was a retired quality control inspector for Texas Instruments. She was a great mother who enjoyed cooking, crocheting and old westerns. She

was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Susan (Anthony) and Allison (Jeff); her son Christopher (Joanne); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, along with many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward and son Edward.

Services were held at Bryant Funeral Home, July 17. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Contributions made to the American Cancer Society in her memory would be appreciated.

Jean M. Bubnis

Jean M. Bubnis, 89, of East Setauket, died April 11.

She was born July 1, 1928, in Port Jefferson Station, the daughter of Edythe and Henry House.

Jean was a retired head cook for the Three Village school district. She enjoyed Bingo, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, cards and going to the casino.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Elaine; sister, Marjorie, along with other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and son Joseph.

Services were held at St. James R.C. Church, April 17. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. Contributions made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in her memory would be appreciated.

Josephine P. Panzarella

Josephine P. Panzarella, 99, of Setauket, died April 30.

She was born March 19, 1919, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Mary and Louis Seminara.

Josephine was a homemaker and a very special lady who raised seven children with her late husband, Dr. Joseph Panzarella, whom she cared for and supported throughout his career. She enjoyed so many activities, especially reading. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for more than seven years; was president of the Doctor’s Wives at Mary Immaculate Hospital; treasurer of the Garden Club; past president of the Rosary Society of St. James R.C. Church; and a member of the Home Extensions/ Homemakers group of Setauket.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jeanine Sanfilippo, Jennifer Villacci and Judy Panzarella; sons, Joseph and James Panzarella; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Maass and Margaret Albora; and many other family and friends..

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (1984); daughter, Jacueline Safrath; son, Jeffrey Panzarella; sister, Catherine Gregory; and brothers, Santo and Salvatore.

Services were held at St. James R.C. Church, May 5. Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of East Setauket. sustainability type programing and I think this was something that we thought was perfect.”

Rotunno’s project was built from common cedar wood and includes a laddered portion where kids can keep and monitor their plants as they grow, as well as a station to plant seeds, equipped with soil and gardening tools. She credited a family friend and contractor for helping with the design and lending his shop and tools for the cause.

“I love it here so much, and as my Gold Award project was approaching I thought it would be the perfect place to dedicate my Gold project to,” Rotunno said of the Explorium. She reflected on providing a new program for kids now in the position she used to be in, visiting the museum to enjoy activities it had to offer. “It’s awesome, just the feeling — since I’m going off to college in a year,

the fact I can leave something they can use forever — it’s just a good feeling I can give back.”

Carol Van Duyn, the museum’s manager who has been there for 13 years, reflected on the fullcircle nature of Rotunno’s time at the Explorium.

“Many of the children that came to join and participate in the interactive exhibits continued and then they became volunteers, and then came to us to ask us if they could do something to leave their mark, and we were thrilled,” she said. “She [Rotunno] kept redesigning and reconfiguring, coming back to remeasure before she made her final cut. So, this was a work in progress for a number of months.”

Rotunno’s mom, Jennifer, who also served as Girl Scout Troop 2988 leader since her daughter was in kindergarten, shared her feelings about

Port Jefferson’s most inquisitive young explorers will have a new, sustainably minded activity to learn from thanks to the efforts of one of their own.

Girl Scouts looking to achieve their Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, are tasked with identifying an issue in their community, conducting research, pitching a project and shepherding it to completion in a leadership role in the hopes of achieving some greater good for the community. Girl Scout Devin Rotunno, a Port Jeff resident heading into her senior year at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, decided to achieve her Gold Award by building a station where kids can plant locally native vegetation at the Long Island Explorium, a Port Jeff museum located at 101 E. Broadway dedicated to fostering an environment of learning and discovery for visitors of all ages, where Rotunno has volunteered for years.

She dropped off and set up the project with help from her parents Aug. 10.

“When I started here early last year in 2017, we felt the programing here has always been about STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics], and we wanted children, guests and visitors not only to know STEM for the knowledge of STEM, but really the civic component of it, like, ‘What’s the big deal about learning about science, technology, engineering and math?’” said Angeline Judex, executive director of the Explorium. “The civic component is obviously our interaction and our relationship with the world and our environment surrounding us. I’ve been trying to infuse some sort of

witnessing the culmination of the long process for her Scout daughter.

“It’s awesome, I’m very proud,” she said. “I’m proud that she’s been a Girl Scout all these years.

It’s not common for a girl to make it to this age and to this award. It’s a really special thing. She’s loved coming down here and volunteering.”

BY ANTHONY PETRIELLO A miracle occurred in the early morning hours Aug. 9 as first responders helped deliver a baby girl at a Port Jefferson Station home. Sixth Precinct officers Jon-Erik Negron, Brian Cann and Karl Allison responded to a 911 call on Lisa Lane. Upon arrival, they found a full-term expectant mother, Keri Fort, in active labor and in need of assistance.

“The Suffolk County PD was the first to get to my house and got us all calmed down — it was kind of a crazy scene as you might imagine,” Fort said in a Facebook message.

“They were a perfectly well-oiled machine with little talking to each other. They all knew what to do without a word, concentrating on me and telling me what to do next. My mother dialed 911 at 2:20 a.m. and sweet little Stella was born at 2:44 a.m.”

Driving on drugs

A 20-year-old man from Bellport was driving a 2004 Acura on and near Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station Aug. 9 at about 11 p.m., allegedly in the wrong direction on a one-way road, according to police. During a traffic stop it was determined he was allegedly driving under the influence of a drug, police said. He also allegedly had marijuana in his possession, police said. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A 39-year-old man from Mount Sinai was driving a 2004 Mazda on Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station near the intersection of Railroad Avenue at about 7 p.m. Aug. 10 and was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. He was allegedly driving knowing his license had been suspended or revoked on at least 10 different occasions, police said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

“It was a collaborative effort,” Cann said.

Working together, officers and paramedics were able to deliver the baby girl, named Stella Blue Fort, in the residence and transfer the mother and baby girl to the St. Charles Hospital Labor and Delivery unit by ambulance in good health. Fort and her daughter have since been released from the hospital and returned home.

This is not the first time Negron has had to spring into action to help bring a baby into the world while on duty. Last August, Negron helped save a newborn in Mount Sinai after a mother gave birth unexpectedly at home, and the baby’s umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. In June, Negron was named the baby’s godfather by the parents.

At about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 12, a 29-year-old man from Plymouth, Massachusetts, allegedly possessed a loaded firearm in his vehicle outside of a business on Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

In a parking lot in the rear of businesses on Main Street in Port Jefferson Aug. 11 at about 10 p.m., while seated in the driver’s seat of a 2008 Nissan allegedly held a switchblade in public view while yelling obscenities and making threatening remarks to unidentified people during a dispute, according to police. He was arrested and charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct.

At Rite Aid in Jefferson Plaza Shopping Center on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, someone stole a pocketbook at about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11, according to police.

Feral cat population in need of attention across Suffolk Along a right-of-way in Mount Sinai, the exact location volunteers preferred not to publicize, a number of cats stalk through the cover of tall grass on silent paws. Upon hearing human sounds, they scatter deeper into the weeds.

“Babies, babies, momma’s here,” Miller Place resident Rita Miszuk called to the wild felines as she refilled water and food trays. She said she didn’t want to give away too many specifics of the location out of fear more cats will be dropped there and left in need of care.

Miszuk is the president of Volunteers for Animal Welfare Inc., a nonprofit that aids feral cat colonies across Long Island. Her group tries to infiltrate cat communities, taking the animals to places where they can be vaccinated, spayed and neutered, often on the organization’s own dime.

Miszuk said she sometimes spends thousands of dollars to humanely control the number of wild cats roaming free.

“There were 50 here, but we’ve gotten them down to 11 — they’re all healthy and they’re all taken care of,” Miszuk said. “This is what typical rescuers do.”

They’re not her cats, in fact they’re nobody’s cats. They’re considered “feral,” but that word belies the terrorized nature of these animals left in the wild. They’re shy, they’re alone, and there are more and more every year.

Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chief Roy Gross estimated, using the organization’s own metrics, approximately 322,000 cats live in Suffolk County, including both feral and domesticated cats. For every four people in the county, there is approximately one cat.

The number of rescue groups, along with the amount of trap, neuter and release programs that attempt to capture these animals, care for them and sterilize them before releasing them back into their original environment, has gone up of late. Still, Gross said the problem only continues to grow as cats continue to breed and people leave unneutered cats in homes as they move away.

“The population is out of control,” Gross said. “[Rescue groups] put a dent in them, but there are just so many cats out there.”

One female cat can give birth to three litters in a year with an average litter of five. Multiply that by their offspring and one cat can become 225 in a year. Erica Kutzing, vice president of Sound Beach-based Strong Island Animal Rescue League, suggested the problem is exacerbated by the warming climate. Where cats used to become pregnant only in the summer months, she said she is now seeing pregnant cats give birth as early as March or February as they get pregnant later in the year.

“A lot of people like to say, ‘It’s not my cat,’” Kutzing said. “It’s fine that it’s not your cat, it’s not

Beyond acts of violence, many residents either don’t know what to do or don’t feel it’s their concern. If people do not interact with these community cats by either taking them to a TNR program or by feeding them, then either the cats numbers grow exponentially or they will start to die.

“Without these people who take care of the cat colonies, we would have cats starving to death,” Kutzing said. “There would just be cat bodies littered everywhere.”

Many groups and shelters like Strong Island or Little Shelter offer local residents opportunities to use their cages to trap the animals so they can later be spayed and neutered. Kutzing said if the cost prohibits a resident from acting on a cat population, they should try and get their neighbors involved and make it a community fund. After all, the community cat problem is a community issue.

“If everyone gets involved, this problem will be drastically cut,” she said.

Miszuk said while her group does what it can, she needs local businesses, residents and especially local government to step in and help, otherwise the problem will only get worse.

“This problem has been swept under the carpet,” Miszuk said. “We need support to say that we are legitimate first responders.”

Opioid symposium posits ethical questions on crisis Stony Brook University hosts opioid forum featuring health care community

The opioid crisis has reached its tendrils out to touch every person in the U.S., and the doctors who prescribe those opioids for pain relief see the ethical dilemma; whether they should treat their patients’ pain or not out of concerns of misuse.

At an opioid ethics symposium hosted at Stony Brook University Aug. 3, Dr. Kevin Zacharoff, an expert in pain medicine and a sitting member of the Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said a number of doctors no longer prescribe opioids for pain management because of how quickly the repercussions of misuse will come down on them.

“All the regulatory agencies are coming down and tightening the screws of people in primary care, and people in primary care are saying ‘I wash my hands of it,’” Zacharoff said. “This is all falling on the shoulders of health care providers — when people dying from heroin and fentanyl has overtaken pain medication.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that nationally 116 people a day died from opioid-related drug overdoses in 2016.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released in 2016 said that the rate of death from drug overdoses has increased 137 percent and a 200 percent increase in the rate of opioid overdose deaths from 2000 to 2014.

CDC data shows that regulations on prescription opioids restrained the rise of overdose deaths involving legal drugs, but since 2011 there has been a spike in the number of deaths caused by illicit drugs such as heroin and other painkillers including fentanyl. Zacharoff said he fears that these regulations on opioid prescribing pushes stable patients who could have been using opioids to treat long-term pain into using illicit drugs.

“Prescription drug monitoring programs have made a positive impact, but they have also had a negative impact on health care providers, because it takes a lot of time and energy,” Zacharoff said.

“Should we sacrifice our care for patients for the sake of people using the substances illicitly?”

For the past several years federal agencies, as well as state governments, have started to restrict the number of opioids available for pharmacies as well as scrutinizing how doctors prescribe that medication. A large number of federal agencies, such as the CDC, the FDA, the Drug Enforcement Administration, just to name a few, are involved in opioid research and regulations. This is on top of state prescription drug monitoring programs, which make doctors fill out forms on patients, saying whether they informed them of the dangers of the drugs and whether they asked if there was a person in the house with a history of addiction.

Democrats should embrace Tax cuts, regulation rollbacks new leadership for the future fueling resurgent economy

BY PERRY GERSHON It’s time for transformation within the Democratic Party. Our party represents a big tent. We welcome Blue Dog conservatives and liberal progressives equally. The focus on issues that worked for Democrat Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania is not the same as what worked for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York City. Most of all, I’m focusing on getting Democrats in better touch with issues that matter to Long Islanders.

It’s a fact that the wings of the Democratic Party coexist successfully and have for decades. We are a party committed to affordable health care for all Americans, without penalty for pre-existing conditions. We want to see reductions in prescription drug prices. We are committed to fighting income inequality, to protecting Social Security and Medicare.

We want fair and comprehensive immigration reform with secure and enforceable borders.

We want to see America strong and vibrant, with stable relationships with our allies. We are

By Perry fully committed to growing the American middle class. We believe good-paying jobs and strong unions are the keys to a robust American economy. Equal pay for equal work must be cemented into law.

But as Republicans have taken over elected governance in Washington — the presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives — it is time for us Democrats to transition to new leadership as we prepare to retake partial control in 2018. Let’s not permit the other side to run against Democrats of the past; we are running for a better tomorrow. When we take back the House this November, there must be new party leadership at the helm. It is time for the next generation

of Democrats in leadership to stand up for all of us. The election is not about Democratic leaders of the past. It is time for us to move forward. Nationally, the 2018 elections are about a vision for a new future, and when the Democrats win we must offer a new face of party leadership.

The election for a Democratic speaker of the House will come only after the Democrats have achieved victory in a sufficient number of individual House races in November. I entered the race for Congress because I believe in the American values shared by my fellow Long Islanders.

In New York’s 1st Congressional District, we must reduce health care costs and create fairer taxation, while making sure Lee Zeldin cannot allow the import of concealed weapons into New York that would be illegal in our state. Zeldin voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a calamitous act that would have driven up health care costs for our most needy.

That’s what voters care about.

I am running for a future with better-paying jobs, a stronger Gershon infrastructure that makes Long Island more competitive for employers, and a 21st-century economy where our young people want to remain in Suffolk County because there are good opportunities for them. Zeldin opposes a woman’s right to make choices about her own body, while I understand the need to protect Roe v.

Wade and to fight for equal pay for equal work.

The next Democratic House speaker will represent all of these values, and the time to select that new leader will come in January.

Our economy is strong and growing stronger with an economic environment spurring considerable job growth and desperately needed opportunities for American workers. Millions of new jobs have now been created since the last presidential election.

The resurgence of our nation’s economy has brought those who had previously given up on finding work off the benches and back into the workforce with Latino unemployment falling to a record low of 4.6 percent and labor-force participation at an all-time high for women, African-Americans and individuals without a college degree. Fewer Americans are relying on government programs and more are securing financial independence, finding the good-paying, high-quality jobs they need to support themselves and secure a brighter future for their family. With the reduction of unemployment and underemployment, the Department of Agriculture has reported that the number of SNAP nutrition assistance participants has deBy Lee creased by two million people since 2016, a testament to more Americans achieving financial independence.

Through the reduction of corporate taxes and the elimination of harmful, job-killing red tape and regulations, confidence and investment are soaring to new heights with companies that were previously fleeing the United States returning with good-paying manufacturing jobs that have boosted GDP to higher than expected numbers.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I have worked to strike down executive branch regulations that unnecessarily harm consumers, small banks and the economy through the utilization of the Congressional Review Act,

which allows Congress to vote down federal agency regulations that are causing damage both intentionally and unintentionally. Coupled with the executive branch’s executive orders, we are witnessing record low unemployment rates and businesses investing in their employees and our nation’s economy, bringing consumer confidence to hover near an 18-year high.

In fact, our economy is doing so well that right now there are more available jobs than people available to fill the positions. Now, more than ever, we need workers who have the skills to succeed in a 21st-century economy. It is critical we ensure access to career and technical education so all Americans who wish to work can thrive in a high-skill marketplace. During my time in Congress, I secured passage of important legislation like the STEM Education Act, which provides federal funding towards STEM programs in our schools, and I remain committed to forwarding programs that better prepare students for the 21st-century workplace.

No matter how much progress is ever made, there will Zeldin always be important work still to do. One great area for further improvement is with America’s role in the global economy where opportunities to sell American goods are limitless and trade imbalances must be better addressed. Renegotiating NAFTA, pursuing advantageous bilateral trade deals and effectively pushing back on highly problematic Chinese policies are all critical with this effort. Increasing GDP, boosting trade surpluses and exporting American goods all while creating good-paying American jobs help to strengthen our economy and security.

The Town of Brookhaven is looking to beef up its cyber security.

At the Aug. 2 Brookhaven Town board meeting councilmembers voted unanimously to apply for a $50,000 grant under the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Cyber Security Grant Program. If the town attains the grant, Brookhaven will use town funds under specified cyber security initiatives and seek reimbursement through the grant.

The grant will make $500,000 available for any county, town or village in the state at a maximum of $50,000 per entity. Other municipalities in Suffolk County such as the Town of Smithtown are applying for the grant.

According to the state grant application, the money can be used for a number of items, including hiring a cyber security consultant, software packages for items such as firewalls and encryption, new equipment such as servers or hardware used against cyber threats, and for staff training involving cyber security awareness.

Jack Krieger, communications director for Brookhaven Town, said the town does not comment on current or future cyber security measures when asked what the money might be used for.

In June 2017, the Town of Brookhaven’s website, among 76 other municipalities, was successfully hacked by what was described as a “pro-ISIS group.” ISIS is referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the group that took over parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014 and is now being pushed back by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces and the Syrian army.

The group, Team System DZ, created a static webpage using the Town of Brookhaven servers, but it did not affect the official Brookhaven website. A link was set up through town servers to a static, look-alike webpage.

Deputy Town Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville) said at the time they did not see any information extracted from the servers. The town’s website was taken down temporarily but was restored within a few days.

Much emphasis has been put on cyber security by government officials of late, as it was revealed that Russia had made efforts to hack into Democratic National Convention servers during the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, taking information which was later released via several outlets including WikiLeaks, an international whistleblower organization. U.S. intelligence officials have warned that Russia is already attempting to influence the 2018 midterm elections through multiple electronic means including phishing scams that target people’s passwords and by setting up fake accounts on social media, according to Bloomberg News recently.

Meanwhile, the Suffolk County Board of Elections is also keeping tight-lipped about cyber security measures as Long Island and the rest of the country heads toward a heated midterm election taking place Nov. 6.

“The board generally doesn’t comment on its security measures because we understand that doing so could aid nefarious individuals in their attempts to exploit our voting processes,” said Republican board of elections commissioner, Nick LaLota, when asked about the board’s preparedness to ward off security threats.

Racers build then row their way around PJ Harbor

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Not even a downpour could stop the participants of the eighth annual Sikaflex Quick & Dirty Boat Build Competition Aug. 12 from testing both their ingenuity and skill in racing a craft they built.

Six teams were given five hours Saturday, Aug. 11, to construct their own small craft out of plywood and caulk, even including their own oars. Those boats were painted early Sunday before they were taken out into Port Jefferson Harbor alongside Harborfront Park to be raced against each other. Though for many who participated, a large part of the competition was to see if their boat could actually float.

“We didn’t even float in last year’s competi-

tion, so this year was a redemption,” said Queens resident Kelsey Pagan, who along with her partner Dominic Ware, won third place with their boat the Crooked Angler.

Winners of the previous year’s competition, Matthew Debeau and Ken Callirgos, from Port Jefferson, got second place with their spaceship-themed boat named Apollo 1379. Brooklyn residents Keanne Petrie and Jocelyn Cabral won this year in their boat School of Fish.

Petrie is a five-year contestant, and this was the first time she won. It was a day of victories for Petrie, as she also was picked in a raffle drawing for a brand-new Sassafras 16 Chesapeake Light Craft Canoe.

“This is really amazing,” Petrie said. She thought about it, and laughed. “Now I just need to figure out how to bring this back to Brooklyn.”

On Aug. 3, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) and several dozen local families and friends gathered at Percy Raynor Park in Centereach for the globally celebrated event, The Big Latch On 2018. This year, Aug. 1-7 was World Breastfeeding Week and profile-raising events went on near and far. Cartright partnered with Stony Brook Women Infants and Children for the third annual event. In a resolution sponsored by Cartright July 12, the town board voted unanimously to classify The Big Latch On as “A program for the public good” with the Town of Brookhaven as a co-sponsor.

“Embracing this intrinsic human practice publicly will hopefully dispel prejudices about women breastfeeding whenever and wherever they need,” Cartright said. “Breastfeeding is a universal solution, improving the well-being of women and children. I am pleased to have been able to take action in the Town of Brookhaven for The Big Latch On.”

Patrons of C’est Cheese in Port Jefferson won’t be “grasping at straws” any longer. In an effort to be more environmentally conscious, its owner has pledged to ditch single-use plastic straws in favor of biodegradable paper ones. The eatery is the latest to join the Strawless Suffolk initiative sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation’s Eastern Long Island Chapter, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and the Single Use Plastic Reduction Task Force she created earlier this year.

Strawless Suffolk organizers hope to convince 100 restaurants in seaside downtowns like Bellport, Greenport, Huntington, Northport, Patchogue and Port Jefferson Village, which rely upon pristine waterfronts, to take a pledge to stop

using plastic straws. Restaurants that agree to take the pledge will be provided with a decal to identify the establishments as a Strawless Suffolk participating restaurant. Editorial

Attacks on the free press must stop

Below is an editorial written by Judy Patrick, the New York Press Association’s vice president for editorial development.

We’ve been complacent.

We thought everybody knew how important a free press was to our world and that all this talk about us being the enemy of the people would be dismissed for the silliness that it is.

But the reckless attacks have continued, instigated and encouraged by our president.

When the leader of the free world works to erode the public’s trust in the media, the potential for damage is enormous, both here and abroad. We once set an example of free and open government for the world to follow. Now those who seek to suppress the free flow of information are doing so with impunity.

The time has come for us to stand up to the bullying. The role journalism plays in our free society is too crucial to allow this degradation to continue.

We aren’t the enemy of the people. We are the people. We aren’t fake news. We are your news and we struggle night and day to get the facts right.

On bitter cold January nights, we’re the people’s eyes and ears at town, village and school board meetings. We tell the stories of our communities, from the fun of a county fair to the despair a family faces when a loved one is killed.

We are always by your side. We shop the same stores, attend the same churches and hike the same trails. We struggle with day care and worry about paying for retirement.

In our work as journalists, our first loyalty is to you. Our work is guided by a set of principles that demand objectivity, independence, open-mindedness and the pursuit of the truth. We make mistakes, we know. There’s nothing we hate more than errors but we acknowledge them, correct them and learn from them.

Our work is a labor of love because we love our country and believe we are playing a vital role in our democracy. Self-governance demands that our citizens need to be well-informed and that’s what we’re here to do. We go beyond the government-issued press release or briefing and ask tough questions. We hold people in power accountable for their actions. Some think we’re rude to question and challenge. We know it’s our obligation.

People have been criticizing the press for generations. We are not perfect. But we’re striving every day to be a better version of ourselves than we were the day before.

That’s why we welcome criticism. But unwarranted attacks that undermine your trust in us cannot stand. The problem has become so serious that newspapers across the nation are speaking out against these attacks in one voice this week on their editorial pages.

As women’s rights pioneer and investigative journalist Ida B. Wells wrote in 1892: “The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press.”

The power of a neatly folded handkerchief I am writing in response to Publisher Leah Dunaief’s “Between you and me” column in the Aug. 9 editions of TBR News Media newspapers.

My father always carried a handkerchief, neatly folded, ironed by my mother. On more than one occasion he reminded me that a gentleman always carried one. While tissues or sleeves may indeed be the modern substitute, to this day I carry a handkerchief, neatly folded, ironed by my wife. I do so for sanitary reasons as well as to honor my

father’s memory.

Your confession of unintentional “pilfering” the officer’s handkerchief brought to mind a family story that always elicited laughter. My father was employed

by Newsday as its classified advertising department manager. Many, if not all, of his immediate co-workers were women operators whose job it was to take advertising copy over the telephone.

From time to time my father had to call one of the women into his office to convey the bad news that she was being

fired. When that message elicited tears, dad offered the distraught ex-employee his neatly folded handkerchief, ironed by my mother. Inevitably, the fired operator left the building with dad’s handkerchief clutched in her hand or tucked in her handbag.

If nothing else, the voluminous turnover of handkerchiefs always provided the family with ideas for holiday and birthday gifts. Thanks for the memory.

Trump’s trade policies are hurting America On Tuesday, July 24, President Donald Trump announced plans to provide $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers harmed by his trade policies. Just so we all are clear, this means that the president started a trade war which hurt farmers because of retaliatory tariffs on soybeans and pork, and in response the president offers the farmers welfare which is paid for with money he’s borrowing from the countries (e.g., China) he started the trade war with.

So instead of profiting from the sale of American food to China, Trump’s trade policy has the U.S. paying money (interest) to China while U.S. farmers become dependent on our government.

The criticism of the president’s trade policy is not only coming from the political

left. Members of his own party have said on the record: • “If tariffs punish farmers, the answer is not welfare for farmers — the answer is remove the tariffs,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.); • “This trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House’s ‘plan’ is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches. America’s farmers don’t want to be paid to lose — they want to win by feeding the world,” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.).

Trump responded to these critiques by saying “be a little patient.”

It would be easier to be patient if the president’s Republican policies of tax cuts for the wealthy and increased spending were working to greatly expand the

economy and pay down the debt. In 2017 Trump pledged to eliminate the national debt over a period of eight years.

But here we are a year and a half into his presidency, and the national debt surpassed $21 trillion for the first-time ever.

So far, a year and a half in, Republicans have managed to increase our debt and our deficit, with no gains in real wages for working Americans. Color me unimpressed by Trump, Zeldin and the Republican leadership in Congress.

So forgive me, Mr. President, if I have trouble being patient when you spend $12 billion on welfare to farmers who are harmed by your policies, and continue to raise the national debt.

Zeldin campaigns at taxpayers’ expense On Aug. 11, I received in the mail a campaign flyer from U.S. Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley). It would require more space than is available to debunk every one of the misleading claims it makes. But my attention was particularly drawn to the fine print on the reverse, “This mailing was prepared, published, and mailed at taxpayer expense.”

Since I am neither a registered Republican nor on Zeldin’s contact list, I presume this campaign flyer was sent to the household of every registered voter in our district. So how many households is that: 100,000? Or 200,000? Or 300,000? And exactly how much of the taxpayers’ money is being used to mail this campaign ad out,

never mind in its preparation and printing?

There’s one particularly absurd claim made by this campaign flyer: That Zeldin has held hundreds of meetings and public forums for constituents to ask questions.

The truth is that he has refused to hold a single traditional town hall meeting during this session of Congress.

The one supposed public town hall he did hold was tightly controlled. Questions had to be submitted in advance, they were screened, they were read out (sometimes in modified form) by a local GOP politician, not by the constituent asking the question, and no follow-up questions were allowed.

The so-called telephone town halls, which Zeldin uses to replace real town halls, are

nothing more than tightly controlled conference calls in which he takes screened questions and again permits no follow-up or dialogue.

Why is Zeldin so afraid to explain his record and his views to his constituents in an open, public, unscreened forum? Is he afraid they might force him to answer some tough questions about his record?

Is that prospect so frightening? And why is he instead using his constituents’ tax money to print and mail campaign propaganda designed to mislead them about his record?

A satirical page from a beleaguered attorney general’s diary

ith great power comes great criticism. The following is a hypothetical diary entry from beleaguered Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who faces routine presidential ire: I don’t know how much longer I can take this.

It’s not fair. Yes, I know my boss is angry, defensive and frustrated, but D. None he’s always pickof the above ing on me, calling

The other day, he called me “scared stiff” and “missing in action.”

Gosh, that doesn’t sound nice, now, does it?

What’s worse? He didn’t say it to my face: He wrote it on Twitter, where the whole world can see his feelings.

I’ve been turning the other cheek all this time, but I’m running out of cheeks. What can I do?

Maybe I’ll develop a new hobby. I’ll practice that “lock her up” chant that tickles me so.

I won’t do it in public. When I’m alone in my soundproof shower, I can say it quietly. I can get a small doll and look down on it, terrifying it the way my boss tries to intimidate me.

I was confirmed as attorney general by a 52-47 vote in the Senate. Now, I know it’s not quite as stunning and exciting as that electoral college win by the guy who keeps insulting me, but it’s still pretty cool and it was a close vote. You don’t hear me telling everyone about the 52 votes I got, the way my boss repeats, all these months later, that he got 304 electoral college votes.

I’m working hard, even though I recused myself from that Russia investigation. I’m just not sure how much more of these harsh insults I can take.

I could resign. I could ride away from this situation into something much more fun and less stressful, like zip lining over an alligator pit. I’m just kidding, of course. There are no alligator pit zip lines but there are some people I’d like to see trying that. “Lock her up, lock her up!” Wait, I got distracted.

I’m serving my country, but it just doesn’t seem rewarding. So, today, I did an internet search, “What to do if your boss is out to get you,” and I found an article in TopResume, a professional résumé service.

It said I should evaluate the situation and see if I’m doing enough. Well, yeah, I am, so check on me, right? Or, maybe, check plus.

Then, it said I should understand my boss’s issues and communication style, and it linked to another article that suggested ways to neutralize

a Machiavellian boss. It said I should present my ideas in a way that allows him to take credit.

So far, I’m not sure I’ve done that. Then it says I should give him credit but, again, I don’t know what he wants credit for?

My boss also seems like a seagull at times, diving in, depositing steaming piles of advice and then taking off, leaving the rest of us to clean up his mess. Now, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but this sounds a bit like my boss.

I’m also supposed to create a written record so I can go to human resources. I’m not sure what HR office I could approach these days. I’ll say one thing for Twitter: It sure does allow me to keep track of all the things he’s said about me.

Oh, and it also suggested I see the situation as a learning opportunity, helping me be a better boss. I guess if I were ever in his shoes, I wouldn’t need to criticize people publicly.

That’s it for now, diary. Until tomorrow, that is, when he attacks me again.

A reader responds with a tale of mercy from California Dear Leah, My wife and I enjoy your weekly opinion pieces, and we especially enjoyed your column about a police encounter (“Techniques for avoiding traffic tickets,” Aug. 9). It rekindled the memory of our encounter, 55 years ago, with the California Highway Patrol.

BY CHUCK DARLING n January 1963, while employed by the Gyrodyne helicopter company in St. James, I was “volunteered“ by the owner, Peter Papadakos, to lead a team of engineers and electronic technicians to assist the U.S. Navy fleet in Coronado, California, installing our drone helicopters on Navy ships.

This assignment was to last six months, so Nancy and I packed up the four kids, (ages 5, 4, 3 and 1), and the dog, locked up the house and flew to San Diego. After we had settled in for a month, Nancy’s folks decided that they could use some time away from the brutal win-

ter weather in Illinois, so they drove to San Diego to warm up and to see their grandbabies.

Whilst there they volunteered to stay with the rug rats for a long weekend, so we could have a respite from parenting. This was a godsend for Nance, for, other than the occasional movie, she hadn’t had a break from the kids for more than five years. She immediately contacted some friends that we knew from the University of Illinois who had settled in Southern California, and set up a long weekend in Las Vegas. Nancy’s folks had driven their 1958, fin-tailed Cadillac from Illinois, and since it had air conditioning, they thought it would be more comfortable for us to drive in it through the desert to Vegas than in the used Volkswagen Beetle which I had bought in San Diego.

We gratefully accepted their offer.

On a Friday morning in February, we kissed the kids goodbye, and headed east for Las Vegas. Driving the Caddy was like flying a plane — it was quiet, comfortable and fast. It was very

easy to let the speed creep up, as the road was flat and very few cars were evident, especially when compared with traffic on Long Island. As I noticed the speedometer at 80, I also noticed in the rear-view mirror, a California Highway Patrol car approaching with his bubble light flashing. Oh, no! I pulled over and the smartly dressed officer approached and said, “You were going a little fast there.”

I told him that we were headed for Vegas for a long weekend, the first time for the two of us to be away from kids together, and we were giddy to get to the palaces of pleasure in Vegas. He asked to see my driver’s license, and I handed over my New York license. He said, “Why a New York license?”

I told him I was on a temporary work assignment in San Diego, and hadn’t bothered to change it for a California permit. He said, “But you are driving a car with Illinois plates.” I said it was my father-inlaw’s car. He was visiting us from Illinois and the old folks were sitting with the kids back in Chula Vista while we were in Vegas. He asked to see the

car’s registration, and I told him that I had forgotten to get it from Nancy’s dad before we left. He had this incredulous, bewildered look on his face and just stared at me for the longest time — it seemed like an hour. Finally, he said, “I’m going to have to let you go with a warning.” I almost wet my pants with joy. But, since the CHP wasn’t known for its benevolence, I asked him, “Why?” He said, “Because a judge would lock you up forever if I wrote you up. You’re driving 80 miles an hour on a California highway; you have a New York driver’s license; you’re driving a car with Illinois plates on it — and you don’t possess the car’s registration. You would never get out of jail. Somehow, someway, I believe everything you’ve told me, but I’m not sure a judge would. Just get out of here, just leave.”

As I watched him walking back to his patrol car, he was quietly shaking his head as though he had seen everything now.
