Blood Center declares blood emergency in New York

By Victoria Espinoza Victoria@tBrnEwspapErs.com There is officially a blood emergency in the New York metropolitan region.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) announced this week the New York Blood Center declared the significantly low levels emergent and urged residents to donate.

“There are hundreds, if not thousands of people waiting for a life-saving blood transfusion that could be the difference between life and death,” Bellone said in a statement. “I encourage all New Yorkers to give the gift of life by visiting a local blood donation center and help someone in need.”

The county executive highlighted multiple summer blood drives, with six to be held across Suffolk County so that residents can attend a convenient location in or near their community.

Andrea Cefarelli, executive director of NYBC said it’s imperative that residents tell friends and family about local blood drives to help get more donors at the door.

“By spreading the word or even hosting

your own blood drive, inviting friends, family, and community organizations, you may save lives in your community,” she said in a statement. “We are in dire need of O negative blood with a reserve that is currently below a two day supply, and that is just too low.”

Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) urged his constituents to donate.

“Having blood on our hospital shelves in advance is key to saving lives as it takes 48 hours for donated blood to reach those who need it,” he said. “In response to the critical shortage we’re experiencing, I am hosting a blood drive with Long Island Blood Services Thursday, July 20 from 1 to 7 p.m., at the Centerport Fire Department. Please join our efforts to replenish the supply by donating at an upcoming drive or at a local donation center.”

Other blood drives in the Huntington area include the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington Saturday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Cactus Salon in Dix Hills Friday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Brookhaven Town web servers hacked by pro-ISIS group

by Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com A pro-ISIS group successfully hacked the Brookhaven Town web servers for at least three hours Sunday, June 25.

Brookhaven was one of 76 municipalities affected by the hack, Page A26 according to Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville). The anti-American group created a page with hateful propaganda against the USA and the president of the United States.

Panico and Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) addressed the incident during a press conference at Town Hall June 26. The group, called Team System DZ created a link using the Brookhaven Town servers to a static, look-alike webpage at the address http:// www.brookhavenny.gov/index.html, and posted it on the group’s Facebook page with the message “Government sites continue to be fondled,” in Arabic, according to Google Translate. The standard www.brookhavenny. gov website was not impacted and the propaganda page was not visible anywhere on the site, though “out of an abundance of caution,” the town server has been quarantined and the town webpage was taken down.

The website was restored as of Tuesday afternoon. The propaganda page has been taken down and currently lists an error message.

“You will be held accountable Trump, you and all your people for every drop of blood flowing in Muslim countries,” the message read in part.

Panico said he was alerted about the issue after a town employee notified the town’s information technology department about the breach after reading a New York Post story published at about 1:30 p.m. with information about the Facebook post by the group.

Panico was asked if it was concerning the town was alerted by media reports rather than its own security defenses.

“It was a Sunday, and I don’t know anyone in our IT department that checks ISISrelated Facebook pages,” he said. “We’re pretty thorough here at the town, but I don’t

know that our IT department combs the pages of those people who hate America.”

Romaine said officials from a Suffolk County cybercrimes unit were speaking with the town’s IT director while the press conference was going on, and the FBI with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would assist in investigating the breach.

Romaine added U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) offered full assistance of federal investigative personnel to get to the bottom of the incident, and the supervisor had also been in contact with the office of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) Monday.

“It’s disconcerting and we don’t write it off as a prank,” Romaine said during the press conference. “We take threats like

this, cyber threats, seriously.”

Panico said no information was extracted from the website or servers, and possible actions to prevent future breaches are part of the investigation. He also said it is unclear how long the servers were infiltrated by the hackers. Panico disputed claims the message was posted on the town website’s home page. Romaine said this was the first time the town had suffered a breach like this.

“None of our records that we know of were breached,” Panico said, adding that the town’s financial information is stored on the cloud off-site on different servers.

Zeldin addressed the hack in an emailed statement through spokeswoman Jennifer DiSiena.

“I will continue to do anything in my power to improve cyber security and protect against other threats facing our nation at home and abroad,” he said.

Marisa Kaufman, a spokeswoman from Schumer’s office, said in an email they have been in contact with Brookhaven about the issue and are looking into the matter. Schumer sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly urging him to launch an immediate investigation into the incident.

“The possibility that these breaches were done by an ISIS or terror-affiliated organization is especially troublesome; citizens deserve to feel like their everyday critical infrastructure, especially their local government’s website, is safe and usable,” the letter said.

Top students at PJ, Comsewogue look forward to new challenges

BY JILL WEBB At the top of their respective classes at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Comsewogue High School are five talented and smart 2017 graduates.

Chiara Rabeno has earned her place as Port Jeff high school’s valedictorian. She will graduate as an AP Scholar with Honor with eight AP credits and has received a National Merit Scholar letter of commendation along with earning a gold award on the National Latin Exam three years consecutively.

In addition to her commitment to academics, Rabeno was an active participant in athletics during her high school career.

She played softball and field hockey, earning an All-Conference distinction two years in a row.

Rabeno was president of National Honor Society, and balanced the rest of her time as a member of the Interact Club, Environmental Club, Science Olympiad, and a participant in the STEM program.

The valedictorian attributes her success to having supportive family and friends who encourage her, along with finding time to focus on things she enjoys.

“Ultimately by doing what you love to do, I think that you’ll end up doing well in everything else,” Rabeno said in an interview.

In the fall, Rabeno will study biology at Boston College, on the pre-med track to become a doctor.

Like Rabeno, salutatorian Xinyi Hong has received a gold award for three straight years on the National Latin Exam. She has a lengthy list of academic achievements, including being a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and earning the American Chemical Society Award.

Hong’s parents emigrated from China, and Hong herself was born in Germany.

Her family came to the United States when she was six years old, moving to Port Jefferson when she was in fifth grade.

Hong served as co-captain of the Science Olympiad team, treasurer of the Environmental Club, and sits first chair viola in the school’s orchestra.

She said one of her proudest accomplishments is overcoming shyness as a way to contribute to her own personal growth.

“I would be scared to say hi to people,” Hong said in an interview. “That’s something I’ve definitely had to work towards as opposed to something that came easily to me.”

When she attends Duke University in the fall, Hong said she will pursue a science-related field.

During graduation June 23, Rabeno and

Hong broke with tradition somewhat, delivering their valedictorian and salutatorian addresses together on stage. They shared the stage and spoke in tandem about the gifts the other possesses. The address touched on the honesty of Hong and the sentimentality of Rabeno, delivering the ultimate message of needing balance in order to achieve their full potential.

At Comsewogue High School, Marissa Kaye Lehner has been named the class of 2017 valedictorian.

A Nation Merit Scholar, Lehner took nine advanced placement classes during her time at Comsewogue. She was a part of several national honor societies, including music, English, math, science, social studies, and Spanish.

Outside the classroom, Lehner was co-captain of the tennis team, winning a doubles match during the Section XI conference championships. She was a part of the academics club, math team, Bringing Unity Through Youth club, robotics and Girl Scouts.

Lehner said a key trait in her development as a student and person is she isn’t afraid to ask for help, and frequently encourages others to “rely on the people you have around you.”

Attending the University of New Haven this fall, Lehner will major in national security, working towards a career as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. government.

Two students had matching grade point averages for second place in Comsewogue’s senior class and will share the salutatorian position — Lauren Ehrhard and Lucas Szeto.

Along with taking seven AP classes throughout high school, Ehrhard has been involved with athletics, including softball, and Athletes Helping Athletes, a club de-

signed to teach elementary school students what it means to be a good athlete.

She was a member of Task Club, a community service organization called BUTY, chamber orchestra, and pep band.

One of her favorite experiences was being the director for a Night For Jason, an annual talent show that raises money for Friends of Karen, an organization supporting families with children suffering from cancer.

The biggest force driving her academically is having “really big dreams ahead of me,” Ehrhard said. “I know that the only way to reach that is to get good grades and be the person I know I can be.”

Ehrhard will be studying criminal justice at the University of New Haven, where she will join the ROTC program in preparation for joining the Air Force post-college.

Like his co-salutatorian, Szeto took seven AP classes. Szeto said school has always been something that has come easy to him, though that didn’t stop him from putting in his full effort.

Szeto is also proud of his musical achievements — he plays the upright bass.

He participated in two different music festivals, the Long Island String Festival and the Suffolk County Music Educators Association festival, and contributed to the Bay Area Summer Orchestra.

Lisa Szeto, his mother, recalled as a child Szeto told her he wanted to start playing video games. She told him she didn’t have time to teach him how, so Szeto took it upon himself to learn how to read so he could play.

“If he wants to learn something he will learn it with gusto,” his mother said of the memory. “If he doesn’t he will get through it.”

After graduation, Szeto will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology and majoring in computer science.

Port Jefferson Village residents took to the polls June 20 with few options, as incumbent Mayor Margot Garant; incumbent trustees Larry LaPointe and Stanley Loucks; and judge John F. Reilly each ran without opposition. Garant received 427 votes, LaPointe 410, Loucks 394 and Reilly 371. No write-in candidate for any of the four seats received more than 10 votes according to Village Clerk Bob Juliano.

Garant will begin her fifth term in office while LaPointe embarks on his fourth and Loucks his second. Terms last for two years.

A 35-year-old man from Rocky Point and a 27-year-old woman from Mastic Beach were at a known drug location near the intersection of Route 112 and Hallock Avenue in Port Jefferson Station at about 9 p.m. June 21 for the purpose of purchasing and using heroin, according to police. They were arrested and each charged with loitering unlawful use of a control substance.

Pole crashing

Near the intersection of Granny Road and Route 112 in Coram at about 3 a.m. June 25, a 37-year-old man from Farmingville driving a 2015 Dodge collided with a utility pole on the shoulder of the road and fled the scene of the accident on foot. He was arrested at about 4 p.m. in Selden and charged with leaving he scene of an accident with property damage.

At Selden Plaza on Middle Country Road in Selden at about 2 p.m. June 8, a 40-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station knocked another woman to the ground, dragged her, causing injuries, and stole her pocket book, according to police.

She was arrested June 23 in Selden and charged with second-degree robbery. She was also charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

A 23-year-old man from Ridge driving a 2004 Chevrolet on Route 112 in Medford June 13 at about 3 p.m. was involved in a crash with a 2015 Hyundai and fled the scene without exchanging contact information, according to police. He was arrested June 22 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Bicyclist crossing Route 347 in East Setauket hit by two cars by alex petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com A South Setauket resident was seriously injured after he was hit by two cars while riding a bike across Nesconset Highway near Walmart in East Setauket just before 11 a.m. June 26, according to Suffolk County Police.

Stefan Kochaniwsky was riding a bicycle across Route 347 from the south side to the north side in front of 3990 Route 347

when he was struck by an eastbound 2004 Ford Mustang. Kochaniwsky was then also struck by an eastbound 2005 Jeep Liberty.

Kochaniwsky, 18, of South Setauket, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford, Kevin Nelson, 22, of Port Jefferson Station, and the driver of the Jeep, Cassandra Benitez, 23, of Shirley, were not injured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing.

At the Centereach Mall May 17 at about 5:30 p.m., a 34-year-old woman from Farmingville punched another woman in the face, causing a broken tooth, according to police. The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of her injuries. The woman was arrested June 20 in Selden and charged with assault.

While driving a 2000 Ford on Middle Country Road in Lake Grove June 23 at about 3:30 p.m., a 22-year-old woman from Holbrook rear-ended a 2012 Honda causing damage, according to police. The driver fled the scene without exchanging contact information, police said. She was arrested June 26 in South Setauket and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

A 42-year-old man from East Shoreham fired two rifles into the air numerous times while at his home on Randall Road June 23, according to police. He was arrested and charged with illegal discharge of a firearm.

In need of a change

At a home on Gaul Road in Setauket-East Setauket, someone stole change from an unlocked 2002 Infiniti at about 3:30 a.m.

Someone kicked the rear driver’s side door causing damage to a 2016 Honda parked outside of a home on Ivy League Lane in Stony Brook at about midnight June 21, according to police.

A 22-year-old undomiciled man threw rocks through the front glass door and windows of a home on Oakland Avenue in Port Jefferson at about 8:30 a.m. June 25, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief.

A credit card and jewelry were stolen from a safe in a home on Vidoni Drive in Mount Sinai at about 7 p.m. June 18, according to police. A police report was filed June 25.

Off-roading

A 2017 Yamaha all-terrain vehicle was stolen from the shed of a home on Jeanne Avenue in Port Jefferson Station Feb. 1 at about 11 a.m., according to police. A police report was filed June 25.

Slashed

A 23-year-old man from Far Rockaway slashed another man with a razor knife at Station Deli and Grocery on Main Street in Port Jefferson at about 8:30 a.m. June 24, according to police. The victim required stitches. The suspect was arrested and charged with assault.

Pipe thief

Copper pipe was stolen from a vacant home on Erie Street in Terryville at about 9 p.m. June 22, according to police.

Pizza party

At Rubino’s restaurant on Echo Avenue in Miller Place, someone stole a credit card and a debit card from a 2003 Toyota at about 3:30 p.m. June 23, according to police.

by Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Parents of seniors at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson have been prepping for the big reveal of their 2017 prom theme for months. Monday night, prom-goers pulled up to the high school dressed to the nines; riding in outrageous cars, trucks, trollies, military vehicles and

more; and strolled the red carpet through droves of family and friends into the gymnasium which was decked out in a Disney motif.

Every year parents of graduating seniors volunteer their time and money, and spend months brainstorming, painting and constructing decorations for the annual June celebration. Theme is kept a secret until the prom actually begins.

Obituaries Anne J. Brown

Anne J. Brown, 96, of Stony Brook, died May 9.

She was born Dec. 11, 1920, in West Hampton Beach and was the daughter of Harry and Mary Bandrowski.

Anne was a retired R.N. who loved to play cards, travel, garden and spend time with friends and her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sidonie and Jean; sons, Charles and William; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; along with many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Sidney, son Thomas, two sisters and one brother.

Services were held at St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church in Sound Beach May 11 and interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Reginald Burton

Reginald A. Burton, 82, of Stony Brook, died May 21.

He was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Brooklyn and was the son of Arthur and Mable Burton.

Reginald was a retired salesman for Richardson Furniture, and he was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Jill, son Craig, four grandchildren, brother Robert, along with other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline and sister Stella.

Services were held at Caroline Church May 25 and interment followed at Caroline Churchyard Cemetery.

Dr. Roger Dee

Dr. Roger Dee, 83, of Setauket died June 10 after a long battle with cancer.

Dr. Dee was born Feb. 24, 1934, in Newport, South Wales, UK. A son of a blacksmith, he was the first member of his family to attend college, graduating from Pembroke College, Oxford University, with a medical degree in 1959.

After a successful career in the UK, including a fellowship at the Royal College

of Surgeons of England, Dr. Dee decided upon a career in orthopaedics. He pursued a research interest in the structure and function of the hip joint and earned a doctorate from London University for his thesis. Further work led to his development of the first prosthetic replacement elbow to be used with acrylic cement fixation.

While lecturing in the United States, he was invited to relocate and establish a new Department of Orthopaedics at Stony Brook University. In 1976, he became the founding chairman, a position he held until 1994.

During his tenure, the various clinical programs of orthopaedics included hand, spine and total joint surgeries as well as sports medicine. The Orthopaedic Residency was accredited under his supervision.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Uta, as well as his son Dr. Christian Dee and daughter Elke Higgins and seven grandchildren.

Eugene Free

Eugene Free of Port Jefferson, known on the radio as Gene Michaels, died June 21 at the age of 60 following a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Friends and colleagues remember Gene as a gifted broadcaster and cherished boss, co-worker and family man with a big heart of gold. On Long Island, Gene will best be remembered for his days on the air and as vice president of programming and marketing at WALK FM 97.5 where he impressively delivered number one ratings throughout the 1990s. More recently Gene had been a reporter and anchor for 1010 WINS. Gene began his career in northeastern Pennsylvania where he grew up with his family of six brothers and sisters in Carbondale. After successfully programming WEJL and WGBI-FM there, he moved to Westchester County, New York, in 1987 to be the program director of WFAS-FM and that’s where he met his future wife, the former Stephanie Gandert. They married in 1989, and daughter Samantha Grace arrived in 1991.

Gene shared his passion for radio with the next generation as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University and Five Towns College where he was director of radio station WFTU. Gene also worked at Shadow/Metro Traffic, Sirius Satellite Radio, Wall Street Journal Network, Fox News Headlines, Merlin Media and Connoisseur Media.

A 1978 graduate from the University of Scranton, Gene considered entering the priesthood while studying at St. Pius X Seminary.

Services were held at Caroline Church of Brookhaven on May 15 and interment followed at the Caroline Churchyard Cemetery.

She was born Jan. 5, 1938, in the Bronx and was the daughter of Vito and Lina Giannini. Marilyn was an office clerk for the Three Village Sanitation.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Dawn Liska.

Mary Lou (Clark) Stein, beloved spouse of the late Francis Stein, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 11.

Born in New Jersey Dec. 3, 1926, she spent the rest of her life as a resident of Port Jefferson. Mary Lou was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, and a member of both the Port Jefferson Garden Club and the Historical Society. She had worked at the Port Jefferson Free Library, at Port Jefferson High School and as a central files supervisor for Stone and Webster Engineering in Shoreham.

She is survived by daughters Linda Sue Shropshire of Miller Place, Joy Domino of Southold, Linda Stankaitis-Trefilio of Palm Coast, Florida, June (Woodard) Kelly of Port Jefferson and son Lee Kurovics of Port Jefferson Station. She was adored by sonsin-law Kenneth Shropshire and Michael Domino; daughter-in-law Patricia Kurovics; and cherished by 14 grandchildren and 27 great- grandchildren; and dear friends too numerous to mention.

Letters to the editor

In appreciation of our local firefighters I am writing on behalf of my family and the residents of Ada Lane in East Setauket to praise the volunteer firefighters of Setauket, Port Jefferson, Terryville and Stony Brook for a job well done.

June 19, I was awoken by the sounds of diesel engines idling in front of my house. To my astonishment and concern, our neighbor’s barn was on fire. Given that it was 4:30 a.m. and most of us on the street were not yet awake to start our week, these brave men and women were already on the scene fighting this dangerous

Fear not and carry on While the week started off with panic in Brookhaven Town, at the Times Beacon Record News Media office, we quickly got back to business.

The scene here Monday morning was probably similar to what occurred at many offices in Brookhaven and beyond. There were various conversations about the hacking of the town’s web server by a pro-ISIS group, and a common thread in the majority of the discussions was that no one could believe a terrorist group, or anyone supportive of them, would know the town even existed. Of course a few of us admitted to being a bit nervous, but we went on reporting, advertising reps continued to sell and our receptionist still answered the phone.

It’s what most Americans have done since Sept. 11, 2001. We are more aware than ever that terrorists exist, and our country is not immune to their threats. But we stay vigilant, we report suspicious activity and continue to go about our day.

Brookhaven was just one of 76 municipalities across the United States affected by the hack. No information was extracted from the servers, according to town officials, so it would seem the hack was nothing more than an attempt to strike fear into residents. The hack now seems symbolic more so than substantive.

Yes, attacks, whether physical or viral, are unsettling, but we as Americans can’t live in fear. If we gave into that fear, we wouldn’t have wonderful events like the graduation ceremonies featured in our six newspapers — ceremonies that are filled with young adults who grew up well aware of terrorist attacks and wars, but who still dream big about the future.

Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico (R-Manorville) said part of future investigations will be researching how to prevent breaches, which we obviously commend and hope is accomplished.

If a hacking of a town’s website was an attempt to scare us, it didn’t work.

We are very grateful for the quick response to protect our families. Given that there were many trees in close proximity to the barn and adjacent homes, without the firefighters’ quick response to this fire it could have easily been much worse. These brave volunteers were there for us in the wee hours of the morning, giving of their time before they began their respective jobs.

It goes without saying that our community is that much stronger

because of residents like these, sacrificing time away from their families to protect us.

To quote an Irish taoiseach, Seán Lemass, in a phrase also used by President John F. Kennedy, “A rising tide lifts all boats.”

Our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who answered the call and for their indefatigable efforts to protect our neighborhood.

Residents need to lend a hand in water quality As we enter into the summer months and enjoy the waterways that we’re blessed to have here in Suffolk County, the quality of our water comes to the forefront of our awareness. Year after year we are faced with the consequences of nitrogen pollution in our waterways that come in the form of various strains of harmful and toxic algae such as brown tide and red tide. As a result, our salt marshes that serve as fish habitat are depleted, oxygen levels are suppressed causing fish kills, shellfish populations are reduced and our beaches close to protect public health. Reversing these trends and cleaning up our waters is a top priority of mine and my colleagues in Suffolk County.

We have made tremendous progress but have a lot of work ahead

of us that will require multiple stakeholders working together on all fronts.

In 2013, I worked closely with Northport Village Trustees to help identify funding for the upgrades to their failing sewage treatment plant. The upgrades resulted in a massive reduction in the plant’s nitrogen discharge, which has produced tangible outcomes including the absence of red tide in the Northport Harbor and the reopening of Centerport Beach to bathers after being closed for 7 years. Sewers for our downtown centers are part of the solution, but we also have to address the major contributor to nitrogen pollution caused by the 360,000 homes in Suffolk County utilizing cesspools for their wastewater. Toward that effort, the Suf-

folk County Legislature has laid the groundwork with the recent unanimous approval of a $10 million grant program to assist homeowners in paying for the innovative systems. Beginning July 1, applications for homeowners will be available electronically.

OpiniOn ‘Tis the season for wallowing in nostalgia

W

aves of nostalgia can hit at any time. They tend to wash ashore more frequently in between graduations with their “look back, look forward” speeches and weddings. During these transition phases, we recall the days gone by, whether we’re suddenly comparing a memory from a few years to a decade or more earlier.

We watch our children stretch out surprisingly long arms to take

We listen to their confident voices as they share detailed, measured and elaborate opinions about politics, sports, social issues or music. At the same time, we replay the high voices in our heads when they shared thoughts that weren’t so complex, as in “Jimmy Neutron is the best.”

When my wife and I walk around town, we frequently stop outside Tball baseball games, where we soak in the figurative nostalgia bathtub.

The exhausted coach encourages Johnny to “run, run, run!” Once the boy reaches first base, a small smile fills a round face that will get longer and leaner in the days ahead, until he reaches the stage where he rolls his eyes when people around him speak of sports because he and his razor stubble have tuned into the world of guitars and rock bands.

For some high school graduates,

home has become a launchpad, where the NASA countdown to lift off for college will thrust them to a new location.

And then there are the brides and grooms, whose parents may recall their own weddings even as they smile at the way their children are planning to have people on stilts passing out hors d’oeuvres.

The reason no one else thought of it, we think, is because it seems impractical, even though we don’t say that because we don’t want to rain on our children’s parade.

The parents of the bride and groom may remember the people who surrounded them at their wedding, from family members to important friends.

Parents may have spent extra time searching through alumni directories or online listings to find the addresses of some of those important friends they haven’t seen in decades to invite them to another can’t-miss wedding.

Parents may stare at their children and recall the long journey from the cooties and a fear fascination with love and romance, to this moment when their child plans to travel the rest of his or her life with this marital partner.

What good does nostalgia do? It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, while overlaying memories with current experiences. While we’re dancing to music we heard years ago, maybe at our own weddings or on an early date with a future spouse, we may close our eyes and reconnect with the younger version of ourselves. We remember who we were and who we wanted to be. We may laugh, realizing how far we have to go, or boost our resolve as we observe the changes in ourselves and others around us that encourage us to believe that anything, improbable or difficult though it may seem, is still possible.

Our Independence Day values conquer all

s we are filming “One Life to Give,” the Battle of Long Island, which took place at the beginning of our Revolutionary War in 1776, and the dramatic story of Nathan Hale, ISIS has come knocking on Brookhaven’s door in 2017.

What? You may say, ISIS from the faraway lands of Syria and Afghanistan, those violently troubled, wartorn places in the Middle East reaching out to our serene little township?

So it seems.

By Leah S. Dunaief official town site. This page, from a group called Team System Dz, conveyed some unpleasant pro-ISIS thoughts through Facebook and, according to Brookhaven, not directly from the town website.

Why are we on the group’s radar?

Who knows? But they have been sending messages like the one we received here throughout the country to 76 municipalities all told, according to town Councilman Dan Panico. Along with these assaults, similar messages were found on several Ohio government websites, including that of Gov. John Kasich. This particular group has hacked into many government websites around the world in recent years, according to a story in Newsday.

As we know, these terrorist groups are looking to spread fear, and the internet enables them to reach across the globe even as their physically occupied territory shrinks from allied military efforts to defeat them.

Homeland Security officials are actively investigating the event, but for us the timing is particularly meaningful. Here we are, filming the story of the birth of our nation, some 240 years ago, and realizing most meaningfully the values and freedoms under which we live.

Those we hail as Patriots gave their lives and fortunes, in some cases, so that these inalienable rights of our society might come down through the centuries to us. We don’t live in fear of being gassed or dismembered

Approaching July Fourth, we are profoundly grateful for our nation, warts and all.

As we covered the story of the town’s hacked website, we needed to decide how to run the article in our papers. We briefly considered putting the ISIS event on the front page, then immediately chose instead to lead with one of the values that make us who we are: our educational system.

As you can see, we have given prominence to graduations. We are the hometown papers and we prize our students and their accomplishments.

We wouldn’t dream of destroying schools and slaughtering teachers.

Our educational system makes democracy possible, and that is what totalitarian regimes fear. Our residents know how to read and write and, we sincerely hope, tell propaganda from real news.

Brian Morrell, Ben Brown scooped up in MLB draft

By Desirée Keegan Desiree@tbrnewspapers.com It has been quite a month for ShorehamWading River senior Brian Morrell.

After the right-handed pitcher helped lead his team to a Suffolk County title to close out May, he performed in the Blue Chip Grand Slam Challenge, leading Suffolk County to that win, too. Last week, he became the second player ever to receive the Yastrzemski Award twice in the distinction’s 50-year history. The honor is awarded to the top player in Suffolk County, which Morrell also became just the fourth junior to receive.

To top it off, now he’s also a Major League Baseball draftee.

The small-town star was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 35th round, with the 1,043rd pick, just after 5 p.m. June 14.

Morrell batted .500 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs this season, and had a 10-1 pitching record with 93 strikeouts in 67 1-3 innings. The senior set numerous school records, including hits in a season (44), career home runs (27) and career wins (29). Morrell threw six no-hitters in his varsity career, including three this season.

“Brian works his tail off, and he does the right thing,” Shoreham-Wading River’s head coach Kevin Willi said. “The first couple times the scouts were out, the guys were a little awestruck, but Brian has always been team first.”

Morrell had one of his biggest showings in a no-hitter against Bayport-Blue Point

April 27. At least five scouts were in the stands to see him nail down 15 strikeouts with three walks while tossing the seven scoreless frames. He topped out at 95 mph on the radar gun. A scout who came from Massachusetts and got caught in traffic, according to Willi, only caught the last inning, though he still got to see Morrell comfortably throwing each pitch at 92 mph late in the game.

“It was good for the scouts to be there and see some of his best stuff,” Willi said. “[Being drafted had] been on his mind all season, but he never let it reflect on his performance or how he treated anyone else. He didn’t try to throw 100 mph and not care if he wins the game — he never had that attitude. He always did what he needed to do to win the game. He was never selfish. He never tried to impress. He just wanted to win.”

An hour after Morrell went, 2014 Shoreham-Wading River graduate Tyler Osik was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 40th and final round. Tyler’s father Keith played seven seasons for the Pirates from 1996 through 2002. Tyler Osik played infielder and catcher, most recently for Chipola College in Florida.

This is the second time that two Shoreham-Wading River graduates have been selected in the same draft. The first time, coincidentally, was in 1990 when Osik’s father was drafted to the Pirates and Julio Vega to the San Francisco Giants.

Along with the Phillies, other teams that scouted Morrell closest included the

Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.

The 6-foot, 1-inch pitcher is committed to attend the University of Notre Dame, and was hoping to hear his name called in earlier rounds, according to Willi, but with the way the draft is set up with signing bonuses, especially in regards to college commits with big scholarships, it can be unpredictable when a player will be picked.

Players drafted have until July 15 to sign a contact. If Morrell opts not to sign and attend school instead, he will be eligible to be drafted again in three years.

It’s also the second straight year a Shoreham player was drafted. Mike O’Reilly, a 2012 graduate and former Yastrzemski winner, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and is currently pitching for the Peoria Chiefs in Class A. The Phillies also drafted Hauppauge’s Nick Fanti, another Yastrzemski award winner, in 2015.

Ben Brown of Ward Melville was also selected by the Phillies Wednesday. The 6-foot, 6-inch right-handed pitcher was taken in the 33rd round.

“When I found out, it was such a relief,” Brown said. “I jumped up really high and I gave my mom a big hug. It’s such an incredible blessing.”

Brown amassed a 15-3 record over his career as a Patriot, and tied for second on the school’s all-time wins list. He went 7-0 during the regular season in his sophomore year, and after a loss in the playoffs, went 3-0 to start his junior year.

He hadn’t given up a single run, but then an unexpected challenge put his

resolve to the test.

Brown’s appendix burst, and he needed emergency surgery. He lost 20 pounds during his setback.

“It was a long road for him and he had to work hard,” Ward Melville head coach Lou Petrucci said. “Everybody roots for Ben. He’s just a good kid and he’s done a good job.”

Other Suffolk County players to be taken in this year’s draft include Mount Sinai’s Michael Donadio, a senior outfielder at St. John’s University, who was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 30th round, and Commack’s Jesse Berardi, a St. John’s junior, was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round with the 312th overall pick.

St. John’s appeared in the NCAA regional this year. Donadio posted a .374/.473/.547 with 24 extra-base hits, including four home runs and 38 RBIs starting in all 55 games this season. Berardi posted a .356/.456/.462 slash line and earned firstteam All-Big East Conference honors. Three years ago, the 5-foot, 10-inch, 185-pound shortstop was taken out of high school in the 40th round by the Phillies.

Petrucci is already dreaming up Ward Melville-graduates Steven Matz or Anthony Kay versus Brown scenarios.

“They’re making baseball relevant — it’s nice to see Long Island baseball get the recognition it deserves,” Petrucci said. “To see these kids pursue their dreams and have their dreams unfold right before our very eyes, that’s what you want to see. We all work to see kids realize their dreams, and Ben Brown was the next in line.”
