Port Jeff Village is making strides to increase available parking as summer months approach.

The rate for metered parking spots was recently raised to $1 per hour Friday through Sunday from 50 cents per hour, but the lower rate will remain during the week, according to Deputy Mayor Larry LaPointe, who reported on the subject during a June 4 public meeting.

LaPointe said the meters took in about $11,000 in revenue this past weekend.

“It’s clear that the raising of the revenue to a dollar did not result in any significant reduction in the use of the meters,” LaPointe said.

Several attendees spoke in support of Tomaszewski and asked the board to reconsider accepting the letter.

“I moved here about 50 years ago, and the reason we did was because this was a personal village,” resident Naomi Solo said. “It was a special village, and I think the person that really epitomizes this, besides yourself, was Wally. The loss of Wally is devastating.”

The chief was known for being on call for residents, be it to address noise complaints in the middle of the night or assist the Suffolk County Police Department in certain cases.

“I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a replacement that’s equivalent to him,” resident Marge McCuen said.

Deputy Code Chief Fred Leute will serve as the acting chief, according to Garant.

In addition, a plot of village-owned land on Barnum Avenue behind The Shipyard apartment complex, which was purchased for the purpose of creating resident parking, won’t be paved just yet, but will be covered in gravel and made temporarily available in the near future, according to LaPointe. The village is also looking to acquire an adjacent parcel owned by the apartment complex’s developer, which would allow the village lot to accommodate about 47 total spots when complete, according to LaPointe.

“This will be the first real increase in parking inventory during my time on the board,” he said. “I’m very excited to see it happen.”

A Port Jefferson Village fixture for more than 35 years is saying goodbye to his role in the community.

Code Enforcement Chief Wally Tomaszewski is retiring, according to an announcement by Mayor Margot Garant during a public Village Board meeting June 4.

“Chief Tomaszewski came in and he signed a retirement letter today with us,” Garant said. “He is going to be retiring, receiving his compensation for the month of June, and we will be searching for a new chief of the bureau.

There’s a lot of change in the department in terms of technology, things that have to happen — and chief, we wish him well. We want to recognize him and retire him in this community for the public service he has provided for us for 35 years. And we mean that sincerely.”

Garant made the announcement when asked by a resident what was going on, as rumors had begun swirling on social media over the weekend about Tomaszewski’s job status and the story behind the departure.

Tomaszewski did not respond to a request for comment.

Community members packed Village Hall for the June meeting to discuss a host of issues, but the larger than normal turnout was likely largely a reflection on rumors about the chief.

Legislator highlights county parks every day in May Suffolk residents may not realize it, but the county has enough parkland to explore for an entire 31-day month and then some.

Making sure her constituents are fully aware of their outdoor options right in their own backyard has become a mission for Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket).

She has been the chair of the Parks & Recreation Committee in Suffolk County since 2016, and upon getting started, said she was excited to start talking about parks. But Hahn didn’t realize how big of a job building awareness was going to be.

“Even in our neighborhood, there were people who had never been to Avalon [Park], people who had never been to the Greenway Trail,” she said. “I couldn’t believe that people didn’t know these things existed.”

In 2017 she kicked off her A Park a Day in May challenge, an initiative designed to get people out and about, visiting one of Suffolk’s dozens of parks to take a selfie and share on social media with the hashtag #APADIM. Hahn said even as the county’s parks chair, in researching and preparing for the now-annual challenge, she encounters green spaces she wasn’t aware of.

“When I became parks chair I said to all of my colleagues, ‘I want to tour all of the parks,’ thinking it was going to be so easy,”

She said she and her family realized a couple of summers back, after taking a family trip to Cape Cod, they were traveling to enjoy experiences that were similar to what could be done back home.

“There’s so much here,” she said. “What we have here — there is no comparison anywhere else.”

Hahn admitted it would be impossible for her as a legislator to visit 31 different parks on 31 consecutive days, so the selfie’s she posts on a given day in May are sometimes taken previously and involve months of planning. She said getting out and visiting parks also affords her the opportunity to speak with constituents and gauge needs at certain parks, like monitoring ticks and funding for more benches.

In addition to her May initiative, Hahn also spearheaded a parks passport program last summer, which encourages kids to explore county parks and keep track of where they’ve been in a green, replica passport.

Drugs and fake identification

A 32-year-old man from Middle Island allegedly stole six graphing calculators from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket May 18 at about 7:30 p.m., according to police. He was arrested June 2 in Port Jefferson Station and charged with petit larceny.

At about 1:30 p.m. June 1, a 36-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole baby formula from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket, according to police. She also allegedly took baby formula from the same location at about 7:30 p.m. May 18, police said.

She was arrested June 2 in Port Jefferson Station and charged with petit larceny.

Unlawful stun gun possession

During a traffic stop in front of a business on Jayne Boulevard in Port Jefferson Station June 2 at about 9 p.m., a 21-yearold man from Selden allegedly possessed an electronic stun gun and an electric cigarette cartridge containing concentrated cannabis, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Fight night

Outside of a business on West Broadway in Port Jefferson Station June 3 at about 4 a.m., a 20-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly engaged in multiple fights with multiple individuals, according to police. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Drug possession

A 28-year-old man from West Islip allegedly possessed Xanax without a valid prescription while on Maiden Lane in Port Jefferson June 1 at about 11 a.m., according to police.

Parked car damaged

Someone damaged the right rear tire and ripped out the valve system on a 2002 Jeep parked on Jones Street in Setauket June 2 at about 6 p.m., according to police.

At about 11 p.m. June 2, a 30-year-old undomiciled man allegedly entered an unlocked door and was found in the kitchen of a home on Tallmadge Trail in Miller Place, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seconddegree trespassing.

At a home on Greendale Lane in Centereach May 31 at about 7:30 p.m., a 29-year-old man from Centereach allegedly possessed crack cocaine, according to police. He was arrested and searched at the 4th Precinct, where he also allegedly was found in possession of heroin, and identified himself with a fake name, according to police. He was charged with two counts of seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance and false personation.

Stealing groceries

A 45-year-old man from Setauket allegedly stole miscellaneous groceries from Stop & Shop on Pond Path in South Setauket June 3, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.

Staples theft

At Staples on Nesconset Highway in Terryville June 4 at about 3 p.m., someone took a printer ink cartridge from the shelf and exited without paying, according to police.

Aired out

Assorted cans of aerosol dust cleaners were stolen from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket June 4 at about 8 p.m., according to police.

Injured in Port Jeff

At about 3 a.m. June 3, a victim was found laying in the road on Main Street in Port Jefferson with a facial injury allegedly sustained in a fight with an unknown man, according to police. He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of his injuries, police said.

Declining enrollment creates challenges for school districts

A shadow hangs above the heads of Long Island’s school districts: The specter of declining enrollment.

“From last year, not a whole lot has changed, enrollment is still declining,” Barbara Graziano, the manager of the Office of School Planning and Research for Western Suffolk BOCES said. “What a lot of districts are seeing is there is a significant displacement between their graduating classes being larger than the following year’s kindergarten classes.”

School enrollment across Suffolk County has been in decline for nearly a decade. In last year’s annual report on enrollment, WesternSuffolkBOCES,aregionaleducational service agency, said there was a 9.1 percent overall decline in enrollment in townships from Huntington in the west to Smithtown in the east from 2010 to 2016.

Between the 2006-07 and 2016-17 school years, Long Island saw a 6.2 percent decline in enrollment, according to Robert Lowry, the deputy director for advocacy, research and communications at the New York State Council of School Superintendents. Statewide enrollment declined by 4.2 percent in the same period.

Nearly every school district on Suffolk County’s North Shore has seen at least some decline, and the trend can have tangible effects on a district’s long- and short-term planning.

“The declining enrollment may push a district toward reconsidering staffing and whether it’s necessary to close a school,” Lowry said.

Smithtown Central School District in the 2012-13 school year had 10,317 students enrolled in the district, and four years later the number dropped more than a thousand to 9,241 in 2016-17.

The declining enrollment was cited in 2012, with guidance from the district’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Instruction and Housing, as the rationale behind the district closing Nesconset Elementary School, and again in 2017 when the district closed Brook Branch Elementary School.

“Over the last few years, the board of education and administration have been proactive regarding the district’s declining enrollment,” Smithtown Superintendent James Grossane said in an email. “The district will continue to monitor its enrollment trends to plan for the future.”

Experts cite factors like declining birthrate, aging population and changes in local immigration patterns as potentially having an impact on local enrollment.

The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention published a report in May indicating the national birthrate in 2017 hit a 30-year low with 60.2 births per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44. The national birthrate has been in general decline since the 1960s, but this most recent report is low even compared to 10 years ago when the birthrate was closer to 70 births per 1,000 women.

Suffolk County’s population is also skewing older. Census data from the American Community Survey showed from 2010 to 2016 there was an estimated 28,288 less school-aged children between the ages of 5 and 19 living in the county.

School closings are probably the most severe action districts tend to take to mitigate the effect of declining enrollment, but it is not the only option. The Three Village Central School District has seen enrollment drop by about 900 students during the last decade. In its recently passed budget the district said it was making several staffing changes, including consolidating the roles of certain staff members. The district cited declining enrollment along with staff retirements and attrition for the changes, but also promised to add a new high school guidance counselor and an additional district psychologist to give more attention to individual student’s mental health.

“While our district, like so many others in our area, have recently been experiencing a decline in enrollment, particularly at the elementary level, we have taken this opportunity to create efficiencies using current staff in order to lower class size and support a number of new initiatives, programmatic enhancements and student support services,” Three Village Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said in an email.

Kings Park Superintendent Timothy Eagen said lower enrollment allows for smaller class sizes and for more attention to the mental health of individual students.

“Our students today need a little bit more mental health support than students yesterday,” Eagen said. “Obviously we don’t need as many elementary sections, but we haven’t necessarily decreased our total staffing amount because we’ve been increasing our mental health supports.”

Even with those potential benefits, many districts are still trying to work out the long-term implications of lower enrollment. Al Marlin, a spokesperson for the New York State School Boards Association said enrollment has a large effect on how much state aid a school can procure.

“Declining enrollment affects school districts in several ways — perhaps most importantly through the impact on state aid because New York’s school-aid

Shoreham-Wading River school district conducted an enrollment study in 2015 that was updated for the 2017-18 school year. The study predicted the district will recede to 1,650 enrolled students by 2025, compared to 2,170 as of May. Along with a declining birthrate and an aging population, the district pointed to low housing turnover from 2008 to 2016 for part of the declining enrollment.

“It is difficult to predict the exact number but it is fair to say that the enrollment decline in the district will be continuing in the near future,” SWR superintendent Gerard Poole said in an email.

Superintendents from SWR and Rocky Point school district both said they do not have any plans to close schools, but there is a possibility lower enrollment could affect the districts’ ability to apply for grants.

A few districts are breaking the trend.

Huntington Union Free School District has actually seen an increase in school

enrollment from 2012 to 2017, but Superintendent James Polansky said in the most recent years that increase has started to level off. Polansky did not want to speculate as to why enrollment in Huntington was not decreasing like other districts, but Graziano said it might be because the district is more diverse and attracts more immigration than nearby districts.

“Every district is different, they have to look at their own schools and communities to see how they deal with enrollment,” Polansky said.

Every year Western Suffolk BOCES releases a report that looks at schools’ current enrollment and compares it to previous years. Graziano, who is working on this year’s report, most likely to be released sometime this month, said the agency expects a continuing decline in school enrollment at least for the next several years. Though eventually, she said, the declining enrollment should level off as entering kindergarten class sizes stabilize. However, there is no telling when that might be.

“Birthrates do not seem to be increasing, it doesn’t look like, as of right now, that’s going to turn around any time soon,” Graziano said. “But of course, we don’t have a crystal ball.”

“We need to be able to appeal to the blue-collar voters, and I believe that’s something I can do,” she said. “Having a husband who’s in law enforcement, who’s an Army veteran — we hear Lee Zeldin talk about ‘vote for the vet, vote for the William Floyd graduate,’ and I live in his base, and I can tell you I know that I can take votes from his base. And having two kids in the military, I can take a lot of that away from him.”

Zeldin is a U.S. Army Reserve veteran.

Perry Gershon identified a different way that he can pull from Zeldin’s support.

The candidate said he made a living in commercial mortgage lending for 25 years and owned a small business — a sports bar in New York City — touting the fact he is a political outsider hoping to shake things up.

“What that background means is that when I talk about the economy and jobs I have a little extra credibility, because I’ve been involved in creating jobs before,” Gershon said.

The five candidates running in the Democratic primary for New York’s 1st Congressional District debate at the TBR News Media office in Setauket June 1.

Elaine DiMasi provides perhaps the most unique qualifications of the bunch.

“There aren’t too many districts that can add a professional scientist to that problem-solving team that is congress,” said DiMasi, a physicist at Brookhaven National Lab. “There’s 435 professionals there — many lawyers, many legislators, many more people with business degrees than with backgrounds like mine, and it’s badly needed right now.”

David Pechefsky said he offers a blend of foreign and domestic policy experience despite never holding elected office, which is uncommon for most first-time candidates.

He has worked as an adviser to governments abroad, in addition to his time as a staffer for the New York City Council.

“We’re going to need that to go toe-to-toe with Zeldin,” he said. “He talks a lot about foreign policy. Our national lawmaking body [is] going to have to vote on a whole host of issues pertaining to foreign policy, and I also feel deeply that the Democratic Party needs to challenge the narrative on foreign policy. We cannot afford to continue to have military interventions.”

served as a delegate at three Democratic National Conventions in the past. That, her experience as a Suffolk County legislator and living in the district for nearly five decades helps her to understand the needs of 1st District Democrats, she said.

“This is who I am, this is who I’ve always been,” she said. “I have a footprint that goes throughout the district and I’ve done good work throughout this district.

I’m well-known.”

Viloria-Fisher and Pechefsky said they possess empathy and compassion, respectively, which they said they feel Zeldin lacks. DiMasi said she’s dexterous, or quick-witted, capable of thinking on her feet in the midst of say, a scrutinized debate.

Gershon said during his years in business he thought he’d earned a reputation as a person with high integrity, capable of getting along with people from all walks of life.

Browning said she’s approachable, often having to remind people to call her “Kate,” as opposed to Legislator or Mrs. Browning.

The winner of the primary will be campaigning for a seat Zeldin won by almost 20 points in 2016, within a county Trump won by seven points, marking the first time a Republican presidential candidate secured Suffolk County since 1992.

Viloria-Fisher said she partnered with Republicans to pass various pieces of bipartisan legislation while representing the county. Pechefsky said he thinks his message — his willingness to advocate for working people — cuts across political lines. DiMasi said she thought her approach to campaigning — sticking to just the facts — would earn her respect with Republicans. Gershon said he believes many people who voted for Trump in the past could be convinced to vote Democratic because he thinks many regret doing so, with an opportunity to score points because of the Republican tax plan, which did particular damage to Long Island property owners. Zeldin was one of few Republicans in Congress who did not vote for the bill.

The candidates identified many of the same issues — gun control legislation,

immigration reform, health care options, lack of high-paying jobs, high cost of living in the district — as the most important to the voters they’ve spoken to, while also citing what they said they viewed as Zeldin’s misguided positions on these issues.

Browning named taxes and water quality as among the biggest concerns facing the district in the near future. “[Zeldin will] come to the Island and say, ‘I have a great environmental record, I’m opposed to the offshore drilling, I’m all about clean water,’ however, he’s voting for bills that are polluting the waters in Virginia,” she said.

Pechefsky identified availability of affordable housing, for people from all income brackets, as something desperately needed.

“Brookhaven is losing population except for Patchogue, and seniors can’t afford to stay here either,” he said. “When you say we’re trying to figure out interventions that can make for healthier communities, healthier neighborhoods — housing is one you could tackle directly. I worked a lot on housing policy in the city.”

Viloria-Fisher also noted the importance of creating reasons — be it high-paying jobs or vibrant downtowns — for young graduates to remain local and plant roots.

She also referenced Zeldin’s position on guns, and campaign donations he has received from the National Rifle Association, as counter to the values of voters she said she’s spoken to.

“He calls it Second Amendment support, I just call it gun violence support,” she said. “Nobody needs to carry around an assault weapon.”

DiMasi said she’s been trying to get through to those with a distaste for politics, recalling a conversation with an African-American as she was campaigning door-to-door.

“The fact is, I believe that federal law is the place to decrease discrimination,” she said. “Laws create personal biases, much more so than the other way around, and that’s from research. We have to understand just how deeply disenfranchised people have become.”

Port Jeff Scout brings ‘Big Chair’ to harborfront to complete Eagle project

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Like the Iron Throne in Westeros, Port Jefferson Village now has a roughly 8-foottall by 6-foot-wide seat that will make any visitors at Harborfront Park feel like royalty. James Marci, 16, a Port Jefferson High School student and member of Boy Scout Troop 454, was tasked in approaching his Eagle Scout Service Project with demonstrating leadership of others while completing something to benefit his community. After months of work, planning and coordination, the harborside park now features what Marci is calling #PJBigChair.

Marci said he wanted to build a landmark for Port Jeff, something that would attract both tourists and locals to visit and take photos on and share on social media using the hashtag, which is actually painted on the massive blue seat in white lettering. He said he got the idea from visiting Cape Cod and heard from others who had visited Vermont and seen something similar in public spaces. The big chair — made out of Douglas fir wood donated by Riverhead Building Supply — was dropped off at the park June 2 and will be officially permanently installed on the gravel path overlooking the harbor behind the Long Island Explorium and near The Landmark Sculpture June 8. Interested sitters won’t need exact coordinates to locate it though.

“It’s something that brings people together, and even the finished product will bring people together through pictures, that’s something I like to advocate for,” Marci said. “All of the connections you have to make it’s truly a matter of coordination, because that’s what it says for the requirement, you have to plan and execute, and it’s more of the planning than the execu-

tion that makes it a great project. If everything runs smoothly that’s what makes it a spectacle to see, just everything came together. Someone who’s going to come from Connecticut or the middle of the Island is going to see this and is going to wonder how it got here. It’s a story.”

Marci’s mom, Christine Napolitano, said she and her son love the area and have fostered a nice relationship with Village Mayor Margot Garant over the years. She said her son interviewed Garant as a firstgrader and wrote her a letter as part of a community project.

“To see him use tools was kind of fun for me, because he now knows how to use a lot of things I don’t know how to use,” Napolitano said, adding Marci’s dad is not part of their lives. “Letting him be in charge of something was very hard because moms always do everything, but he did it all by himself and I’m very proud of him.”

Marci said the primer and stain for the wood were donated by Benjamin Moore in Port Jefferson Station, and a couple of the employees who helped him out were former Scouts. He said his uncle — Napolitano’s brother — and Village Trustee Stan Loucks and the rest of the board helped him in coordinating and completing the project. He also thanked the family of Bethanie Rizzo, Troop 454 committee chair, who allowed him to store the chair in her garage while it was being completed and assisted in transporting it to the park.

“The work that it takes to become an Eagle Scout is just remarkable,” Trustee Bruce D’Abramo said. “I think that the Boy Scouts of America are really training some leaders of tomorrow and it’s not easy to get through all of the steps. I’m just so proud of this boy, and I wish him well.”

Students honored for physical education leadership

Richard Melucci were chosen by physical education teachers for demonstrating strong leadership and character traits in physical education as well as a commitment to academics.

“These students exemplify the core leadership values of our school and athletic community,” athletic director Danielle Turner said. “This honor recognizes their collective commitment to physical education and serving as role models for their peers.”

Sharing essential lacrosse skills The Port Jefferson high school boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams held a youth clinic to help train athletes in a variety of skill-based drills and specialized training for field positions. More than 75 students in grades K-6 attended the weekend event held at Scraggy Fields alongside their coaches and parents.

“The event was highly rewarding, not just for the athletes involved, but also the varsity athletes who helped run the event,” boys

lacrosse head coach Taylor Forstell said.

Boys varsity lacrosse captains Connor Kaminska, Thomas Mark and Billy Scannell echoed their coach’s message. Being the first generation of youth lacrosse members in Port Jefferson, they did not have the older kids to look up to for advice. Now as varsity players, the trio finds it fulfilling to give back to the youth programs and to have a positive impact on the growth of the lacrosse programs in Port Jefferson.

Five students from the Port Jefferson School District were named elementary and middle school Suffolk Zone Award honorees by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. They were honored at a ceremony at Bay Shore High School.

The Comsewogue senior sprinted her way to a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 1.03.94 seconds at the Suffolk County track and field individual championship/state qualifier

June 2 and 3 at Comsewogue High School.

Griffin was also part of Comsewogue’s 4×400 relay and placed third in 3:57.53.

Sabrina Donoghue, Brianna Quartararo and Annalise Russo rounded out the relay, which set a new school record, breaking its own record of 4:02.34 by almost five seconds.

Comsewogue junior Travis Colon came in third in the 110 hurdles (15.06) and fourth in the 400 hurdles (56.40).

The Centerport Fire District is seeking applicants for the position of District Secretary-Treasurer.

A Fire District Secretary-Treasurer has custody of all the records and books for the Fire District. They will attend and record minutes of regular and special district meetings, and receive and answer all correspondence.

The Fire District Secretary – Treasurer also has the responsibility for the receipt, disbursement and recording of all monies belonging to the Fire District and performs related work as required. They may also perform additional duties as the Board of Fire Commissioners may determine necessary and request.

Typical Work Activities (Include, but are not limited to) Take minutes at meetings, as well as type and post them; record and maintain ledgers, accurately post and reconcile accounting figures; Receive, disburse, and deposit monies for purchase orders; oversee and maintain the payroll and payroll withholding taxes; make reports to federal, state and local authorities regarding insurance, pension, disability rosters and injuries; issue reports on bank balances, and itemize receipts and withdrawals to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare monthly and annual reports of receipts and disbursements of District monies to be furnished to the Board of Fire Commissioners; prepare for, oversee, and administrate the annual Fire District Elections, Seminars, and the Installation dinner; and act as a liaison with the Fire District actuary and auditor.

Full Performance knowledge, skills, and abilities Good knowledge of Fire Department routines, functions, terminology of equipment and procedure; Good knowledge of English, spelling, and arithmetic; Good knowledge of ledger posting and bookkeeping practices, as well as recording and filing; Skill in speed writing or shorthand, and typing at a reasonable rate of speed; Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with the Board of Fire Commissioners, volunteer fire personnel, employees, and the general public; Ability to compose routine letters and memoranda; Should be proficient in using computers, utilizing Email, using word processing programs, and spread sheets; Must be proficient (after training) in utilizing the Fire District accounting software.

The Fire District Secretary-Treasurer answers to and is under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners, who are 5 elected public officials. The Board of Fire Commissioners appoints this position annually. An annual performance report will be provided.

This job is part time. Typical hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 1pm and 1-2 evening meetings a month.

Letters to the editor

Last week we had the five Democrats vying for a spot on the ballot to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District against U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) at TBR News Media’s Setauket office for a debatestyle discussion. Traditionally, this is an exercise we do every fall for each of the various races for local political offices. We write about the discussions and endorse a candidate, and we do not traditionally do this for primaries. However, this particular race at this particular time in national politics felt like an important moment to fully embrace. We are witnessing a presidential administration that both sides can at least agree on calling, if nothing else, virtually unprecedented.

This is noteworthy here and now because the district is represented by a congressman who is taking an enormous political risk by routinely doubling and tripling down on even the most unprecedented behaviors and policies that have been displayed and put forth by President Donald Trump (R). A byproduct of being a chief congressional defender of this president is that a political campaign through a long hot summer with a Democrat stockpiled with endless juicy campaign content like: “Trump and Zeldin wanted to take your health care away and let Paul Ryan raise your taxes,” awaits.

Full disclosure: We have not yet had Zeldin at our office for an extended, far-ranging discussion, as we do periodically, in 2018. A memorable quote from his last visit was, “I’m no one’s proxy.”

We intend to invite the congressman in for a discussion again in the near future, ahead of a one-on-one debate with the primary winner this fall. In the meantime, his two Twitter accounts should be examined — @RepLeeZeldin and @LeeZeldin — and conclusions drawn. For a congressman who has been roundly criticized for declining to hold what his critics would define as the proper number of in-person, no-holdsbarred town halls, his statements on Twitter can sometimes be the best we’ve got.

What he chooses to discuss on Twitter, and how it is received, has become of interest to us. A calculation Zeldin is likely to be making currently, if retweets and likes are to be believed is rabble-rousing about Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Russia and general identity politics sells.

While our organization is not endorsing a primary candidate, we will offer a few thoughts that registered NY-1 Democrats should know come June 26. They will have their choice of five, clear-headed, issue-driven candidates who are decidedly left of Hillary Clinton (D) and a few strides to the right of Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) on the political spectrum, but not much. They each offer unique and interesting political challenges for Zeldin, especially should he choose to embrace Trumpism and identity politics as his campaign motif.

Kate Browning lives two miles from the incumbent on the South Shore, and insisted she knows what it takes to make a dent in Zeldin’s base, in addition to touting her experience in the Suffolk County Legislature.

Elaine DiMasi is a scientist from Brookhaven National Lab, who we imagine would be difficult to debate on a topic like, say, “clean coal.”

Perry Gershon can ironically sell a similar background to Trump: a political outsider from the private sector — commercial lending and a small business owner — running on change, with the most money of any of the candidates, which largely comes from his own pocket.

David Pechefsky boasts legitimate domestic policy experience as a longtime New York City Council staffer, though he has not personally held political office. He also possesses a legitimate foreign policy background, having served as an adviser to foreign governments.

Vivian Viloria-Fisher has a solid blend of track record, depth of experience, name recognition from her years in the county Legislature and laser focus on the few issues we could easily see being the deciding factors come November: health care (especially regarding reproductive/ women’s health care rights), gun control and immigration.

We would like to comment on the article “Perspectives: Preserving local history amid revitalization project,” which appeared in the May 31 edition of The Port Times Record. The Port Jefferson Station Commercial Hub Study of March 2014 that we did with Lee Koppelman specifically recommends the preservation of the E.H. Rogers Feed and Grain and the adjacent Rogers buildings among others. We incorporated images of the past and the possible transformation of the present structures. Political dealings with Bannon a mark against Zeldin It is a great irony that Congressman Lee Zeldin touts Jewish-American Heritage Month.

The irony is that Zeldin, against the pleading of Jews and nonJews in his district who begged him not to have Steve Bannon as a keynote speaker at his fundraiser, had him anyway. Bannon has been cited by the Anti-Defamation

League as a panderer to antiSemites and racists.

Zeldin also supports an agenda that is diametrically opposed to Jewish values.

This apparent attempt on the part of Zeldin to win the support of Jews in his district is cynical at best and hypocritical at worst.

Month is important in that it points out the contributions and participation of Jews in America, Zeldin in not the one to celebrate it.

In favor of ranking students After I read the first two paragraphs of Leah Dunaief’s May 31 column in Times Beacon Record Newspapers, “Dumbing down America as graduation approaches,” I had to check the byline and the picture to see if my name and photo were there.

My sentiments exactly.

I grew up in NYC, and went to a high school where you had to pass a test to get in. I was not even close to being valedictorian or salutatorian, but I didn’t care.

Just having that school as something I could use on a résumé, or to get into a good college, was enough for me. The people who wanted to be competitive with one another were, and those of us who chose not to be were not.

For me, my competition was to be the best that I could be. The key was to do the best that I could do.

During the administration of

New York City Mayor David Dinkins, there was a strong movement to do away with specialized high schools, since they were thought to be elitist, and that not getting in would affect a kid’s self-esteem.

This was the start of the dumbing down process (remember the movement to outcome-based education) in a “progressive” city. Thank goodness that movement was squelched.

As Leah points out, the “participation trophy” society, and one where people get recognized for just showing up, really means that if everyone is special, then no one is. What incentive is there for a mediocre student to try to improve, if everyone gets a diploma, and excellence is not recognized?

tournament and he is made to feel like a loser because he doesn’t get a trophy. GET OVER IT. In life, there are winners and losers, and many successful business people, athletes, etc., will tell you that it was their failures that drove them to ultimately succeed. The way that many millennials reacted to the 2016 election is indicative. Some colleges and law schools had to have “safe rooms,” places with LEGOs, petting animals and PlayDoh, psychologists on campus, etc., because the students could not deal with the fact that their candidate lost. They never had to deal with failure before. They had no idea how to handle it.

They were told by their parents and educators that they were the best. That whatever they did was good enough. POOR BABIES!

Starting my own collaborative counterculture

’m starting a new movement. I’m going to call it CCDD, for CounterCulture Dan Dunaief.

Hey, look, if other people can put their names on buildings, airlines and bills that become laws, why can’t I, right?

My movement is all about trying to get away from a world in which large groups of people line up on either side of an issue, without much consensus or common ground in between.

So, I’m going to establish my own rules for CCDD. For starters, I’m not going to hurry to do anything. I’m going to smile when the person in front of me doesn’t hit the gas as soon as the light turns green. I’m going to let people go ahead of me.

Let’s not get ridiculous about this, right? I mean, if I’m waiting for a sandwich and I’m starving, I’m not going to let everyone go, but, I’m just saying, I’m going to take my foot off the accelerator and stop acting as if I have to race to every event.

OK, I’m also going to stop acting as if I know everything. Everyone is supposed to know everything, or at least fake it. Besides, if we don’t know something, we can check on the internet, which is the greatest source of information and misinformation ever invented. I’m going to say, “I don’t know,” and try to reason through what I recall from my education, from my reading and

from people around me before asking Siri, Alexa or any other computer created voice for help. I can and will try to figure it out on my own.

I’m not going to read anything shorter than the length of a tweet message. No offense to Twitter, but the president of the galaxy vents his extreme frustration with people inside and outside his cabinet regularly through this system, so strike while the iron is hot, right?

Except that I don’t want to read short ideas, short sentences or shorthand. I want to read a full, detailed thought and idea.

I’m going to care more than I ever have about grammar and spelling. I’m going to encourage others to care about the difference between counsel (advice) and council (a collection of people) because words matter.

I will look carefully at nature whenever I have the chance. I plan to consider the importance of the

journey, even as I head toward a destination. The ends will not justify the means, even if it’s easier to cut corners and to take small liberties along the way.

I will believe in facts. This one might be the hardest to live by because, after all, what is a fact today? How do we know, for sure, that something is true? I will research information and will make my own informed decision.

In CCDD, I’m going to listen to people who speak to me, and ignore those who shout to get my attention. If what you say is important and relevant, the value should speak for itself.

Finally, I’m going to celebrate my differences with other people.

I’m not going to assume someone passionate about a belief different from my own is wrong. I am going to try to listen attentively, so that I can meet them somewhere closer to that barbell line. If they can change me, maybe I can change them?

It was to be a milestone high school reunion this past weekend, a classmate was coming from Denver to stay with me, and we would attend the reunion together. I have known her since seventh grade, and for whatever reasons apparent only to middle school kids, we had nicknamed each other then “Salmon” and “Clambroth.”

besides us remember that? More than 50 women out of the original 225 in our all-girls school were coming into New York City or already there, and it promised to be a grand gathering.

My friend was already flying east Thursday morning when I climbed out of the shower and fell on my back in the bathroom. The pain was sharp and immediate. In an instant the much-anticipated weekend evaporated before my eyes. Never mind the weekend. I was going to be lucky if the bones on the left side of my body — my shoulder, elbow, forearm, ribs and hip — weren’t broken. None of the surfaces in the bathroom are forgiving, and I had cracked against the wall of the tub.

The vision of walking into reunion was replaced by my coming home from the hospital in a body cast.

I realized I was screaming as I lay on the ceramic floor and had been for a number of seconds to no avail. There was no one else home.

I screamed some more, just because I could, then began the miles-long

crawl to my bedroom. For some unaccountable reason, I thought I would feel much better if I could get into my bed. Silly me, I couldn’t even stand. Nor could I stop shaking.

I was able to pull the phone off the table, however, and I called a dear friend who fortunately was home and had rescued me before. Together we drove to the hospital.

That was only a 10-minute trip, but I felt every pebble and bump in the road. The hospital personnel were wonderful. They wheeled me into the emergency room, and after some inevitable paperwork but not much of a wait, I was helped onto a bed between two curtains and my date of birth corroborated several times with the paper bracelets on my wrist. An empathetic physician’s assistant greeted me and asked what had happened. Then came the X-rays.

Of course they were going to X-ray the places that hurt, and I tried not to scream during the many rearrangements of my body. The process seemed to go on forever although I had no idea of time, and then it was

over. I joined my angelic friend between the two curtains and squirmed in bed, searching for a pain-free position as we waited for the results.

The PA came with good news and bad news. My shoulder, elbow, arm and hip were badly bruised but not broken. In fact they were already turning colors of the rainbow amid the swelling. But my back, the area of greatest pain, had what seemed like a new compression fracture. I had endured that trauma before, and the PA couldn’t be sure it was a new or old injury. And there wasn’t much the PA could do except recommend a painkiller, preferably Tylenol, and send me home.

Imagine the reaction of my Denver friend when she completed the 2,000 mile trip to my house, only to find me laid out in my living room and still shaking. She did go the different events of reunion weekend, and through her descriptions and the texts and emails from those gathered, I was able vicariously to enjoy hearing what they talked about. I think before the next milestone reunion, I won’t shower.
