Local students show reverence in 2nd annual Joe’s Day of Service Giving back and paying it forward. That is what Comsewogue High School teacher Andrew Harris wants his students to get out of the second annual Joe’s Day of Service. Students and staff participated in this year’s event on May 29 and throughout the day engaged in acts of kindness throughout the community.

Harris said the idea of a full day of community service projects came about last year, when students in his classes made pitches on how the student body could spend the day.

Two students, Julia Ratkiewicz and Rachel Plunkett, proposed the idea of visiting Calverton National Cemetery, where members of the United States armed forces are laid to rest, to spend the day cleaning gravestones and straightening flags.

Harris immediately took to the idea, and for the second straight year nearly 200 Comsewogue High School students journeyed to Calverton cemetery.

Joe’s Day of Service was named after Superintendent Joe Rella, who Harris said showcased a belief that students and community members can improve their lives and the lives of others by working together.

“I wanted the students to know that what they do can impact and benefit so many people,” he said. “Also, I think it’s important to get involved and step up to the plate.”

While the high school students were at Calverton, other Comsewogue kids throughout the district were doing their part. Middle schoolers participated in a beach clean-up at Cedar Beach, elementary school kids at Norwood Elementary School sang songs to senior citizens and others painted rocks as part of the Kindness Rocks Project, an initiative which calls on people to paint inspiring messages on rocks and leave them in places where they will be found by someone in need of an emotional boost.

Students and staff honored Dashan Briggs, a member of the National Air Guard 106th from Port Jefferson Station, who died last year in a

helicopter crash in Iraq, along with several members of his unit. The high school chorus serenaded Briggs’ wife Rebecca Briggs and his children, Ava and Jayden, who will be attending district schools next year. Comsewogue student Ava Pearl presented the family with a portrait she painted of the late Briggs, which will be placed in the district schools.

“We wanted them to feel part of our family,” Harris said.

The students joined the Briggs family and others at the Calverton National Cemetery to visit Dashan’s gravesite. Once there, they gave the family flowers and painted socks with encouraging messages. Also, this year, students straightened and put flags on gravesites throughout the cemetery. Students took the time to escort family members of veterans as well, who were coming from around the New York metro area, to visit the graves of their fallen family member.

“It is so nice to see how many kids were able to come out and help,” John Quartararo, a senior at Comsewogue High School, said. “For them to give up a day of school to come out and do this just shows how much a community that Comsewogue really is.”

For the high schooler, to be able to honor Dashan Briggs’ memory in front of his wife and children meant a lot to him personally.

“I lost my father when I was younger, and just knowing that we are making an impact and showing that we are always there for them means a lot,” he said. “The motto for us has always been to help someone out — ‘once a warrior, always a warrior’ and I feel like that resonated on this whole day.”

Along with the cemetery visit, teachers and students participated in a track walk to fundraise for a fellow student battling leukemia and whose family is having financial distress due to the treatment costs.

Harris praised the students for what they did on this day.

“I just want you guys to know that you have made a huge impact to the community and the Briggs family. You should be proud of yourselves,” he said.

Port Jeff trustee candidates address village issues

Meehan currently works as the elementary school principal where he has been for eight years. He is a commissioner of the Port Jefferson Fire Department and boasts about his lifetime of living in Port Jefferson and being involved in local projects and programs for more than 50 years, from working in businesses uptown to caddying at the golf course to working emergency medical with the fire department.

He said that experience in the multitude of village life, from the country club to the school to the beaches, gives him an edge in helping to run a village with many different facets.

“I’ve seen everything, and I don’t hesitate to get my hands on issues,” he said.

Veteran of local politics John Jay LaValle, the head of the Residents First Party which includes newcomer trustee candidates Tracy Stapleton and Tom Meehan, is facing off against multiterm Mayor Margot Garant and the Unity Party, featuring newcomer Kathianne Snaden and incumbent trustee Stan Loucks.

The four trustee candidates stopped in at the TBR News Media offices to share what their plans for the village would be if elected.

Bringing business to Port Jefferson

Perhaps the most controversial point of the current village board race is the need to build business within Port Jeff. Residents First Party candidates said there is a need for the village to streamline the process of setting up a business within the village and a need to not hamstring those businesses with permitting or high rents.

“There has to be a way to streamline these projects,” Stapleton said. “They have had to jump through so many hoops.”

She added she feels the village needs to be beautified and made more cohesive with flowers and painting.

Snaden said that as many stores have closed their doors, more have moved in to take their place. She cites new restaurants like Prohibition Kitchen, which worked with the village

government to change code allowing them to work around the previous parking requirements of their small bar space. Though the Gap downtown has closed its doors, she said the current village administration is already working with the landlord to aid in finding a new tenant.

“Everybody wants a successful downtown — without a downtown you don’t have a village,” she said. “I am all for helping those small businesses out if code changes need to be made and updated.”

Meehan was concerned with the experience of some businesses like Ruvo East, which he said has told the Residents First Party candidates they have had a terrible time with permitting by the village government.

Loucks said there is a difference between how successful a business is if they own the property versus if they rent, with renters getting the short end of the stick. He said the Gap was paying $37,000 a month for the space. He added there is need for more apartments in the village to add foot traffic.

“Rents are really beyond the market,” he said. “Business needs people, and apartments bring in people.”

While rents are beyond the scope of the village to be directly involved, he said the trustees can get the Business Improvement District to set up some kind of rent control.

Both Meehan and Stapleton said much of the loss of business has to deal with parking issues.

Stapleton said one of the largest inhibiting factors to bringing more foot traffic into the village is parking enforcement, which she said is much too strict and inconsiderate, with officers “waiting” to write tickets on cars.

“I hear people saying they will never go to Port Jeff again, and I think a lot of that is the overenforcement of the parking tickets and the way they’re given,” Stapleton said. “I don’t feel residents and visitors are made to feel welcome. I think code enforcement needs a course in civility.”

On any given day, a large percentage of spots in the village are taken up by employees of the local shops. Meehan said the village can work with the school district and St. Charles Hospital in helping to mitigate parking issues with their lots. He said some of the larger businesses like Danfords Hotel, Marina and Spa can start to require that employees park in further lots if they take the Port Jefferson Jitney over to their workplace.

“There is such limited parking, and we’re not expanding it any place,” said Meehan.

Loucks countered Meehan and Stapleton, saying much of what they suggested has been tried unsuccessfully as employees just prefer to park closer and valet parking died off.

Snaden, a member of the parking committee, said it’s difficult to get businesses to make their employees use the jitney. She said the board can incentivize the Business Improvement District to come together again and find ways to incentivize parking in outer village lots, adding that she believes the committee has already done good work with managed parking and the new parking mobile app the village has instituted.

She said she would also like to see code enforcement have ambassador training where they

could talk to visitors about the best stores to eat at or the best lots in which to park.

“Purchasing the lot at Barnum, that’s going to add another 40 plus spaces, but you have to remember we’re in a bowl,” Snaden said. “You can’t add parking lots on hills — we have what we have.”

Snaden worked as a paralegal for over 20 years, then became a stay-at-home mom before running a freelance photography business from her home in Port Jeff.

She ran last year for trustee when she lost by only two votes and said she has since become extremely active in the village to where she now sits on the parking committee, public safety committee and she regularly attends village meetings.

She said she brings a fresh set of eyes and the perspective of the young families.

“I can make that connection between the school district and the village board,” the freelance photographer said. “A lot of families don’t have the time to attend meetings or don’t believe their voice will be heard.”

Parking issues

All candidates agreed there are major issues with parking in Port Jeff, for both residents and visitors to downtown, though several disagreed on how it could be amended with a lack of available space for new lots.

Loucks has been a member of the board of trustees for four years where he says he works full time, having since retired from athletics director position at a Long Island school district. He is the current liaison for the country club and the parks department.

He said he brings to the table more than 20 years of experience of the country club and the recreation department, citing dozens of new programs he brought to the club that have become popular. Otherwise he says he is one of the hardest workers currently on the village board.

“I’m a tireless worker,” Loucks said. “Nobody works more hours than I do.”

Stapleton is an attorney who currently works from home part time specializing in buying business licensing and house closing. She said she could offer a new, fresh perspective to the village board.

She said she has a reputation of bringing people together to solve problems, where if she herself doesn’t have the particular answer that she will ask other experts to become involved. Otherwise she said she works relentlessly at a problem until it is solved.

“I’m diligent, I keep working hard until we get the job done,” she said.

What needs to be accomplished with uptown Port Jefferson

“When I was a kid, uptown was more happening, and downtown was more of a depressed area,” said Meehan. “What kind of area doesn’t have a pizza place, a bagel store, a Starbucks?”

The elementary principal said one of the problems is safety uptown, and he suggested code enforcement or Suffolk County Police should be around for every train arrival.

Snaden said there is a problem of filling up the blighted buildings uptown since the owners of those buildings are awaiting some large business to come in and are unwilling to rent out to small tenants. Though in the meantime, she said the Uptown Funk project, headed by the current village administration, has already done well to attract businesses like new proposed apartments in that uptown area.

“Emptiness is a sign that things are moving along,” she said. “We are well on our way to getting that place cleaned up.”

Stapleton said she fears a glut of apartments uptown without signs of new small businesses moving in. Though these apartment projects are still in the planning process, she has not yet heard of new businesses coming in underneath the apartments.

Loucks said the village is close to finally obtaining a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which will allow them to go out to bid on constructing a new retaining wall to stop erosion of the beach and the surrounding country club.

“You can’t speed up DEC — they’re very difficult to deal with,” Loucks said. “All that sand needs to be brought back to us if we can.”

Meehan, who saw the beach come into village hands many decades ago and who personally worked on the beach for several years, said its loss has been distressing. Much of it comes down to the west jetty in Mount Sinai, which is still months from starting repairs by the Town of Brookhaven.

Snaden said work has been done about the East Beach erosion, though without a permit any construction would be illegal.

“I’ve been to those meetings — they’ve been working their butts off with the DEC but without those permits they can’t touch it,” she said.

Village officials have said much of the sand on East Beach has been lost through that jetty, but town officials have made no promises the village will get its sand back once the jetty is repaired and the harbor inlet dredged.

Stapleton asked if it made sense to complete the project without the jetty being done first.

“You need to get somebody to work with Brookhaven,” she said.

Flooding in Port Jeff

Meehan said he was the senior fire department official at the firehouse last September when the structure started to flood. He saw the water rising out of the gutters “like a geyser.”

“We allowed a lot of development up at the top of Liberty without a big sump up there,” Meehan said. “In my walks around town I see the catch basins are filled.”

Stapleton said she would ask for sugges-

tions from other companies who specialize in flood mitigation.

The village has asked an engineering firm to study flood mitigation in Port Jefferson.

Snaden said dredging has already been done on Mill Creek, but Loucks added that if the tide is up, the drains that go into the harbor no longer work.

“I think we can study the flooding issues in Port Jeff forever,” he said. “We’re in a bowl, there’s really not much you can do when the water comes down like [last September.] It wasn’t a storm surge that flooded the village.”

Snaden said the fire department can help more to warn businesses of incoming floods, but Meehan said they don’t have the authority to issue any kind of evacuation.

Port Jefferson residents can vote on candidates for trustee and mayor June 18 at the Village Center from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Comsewogue library helps to clean up Brookhaven town

For the first time, Comsewogue Public Library participated in helping to clean up Brookhaven town.

As part of the 12th Annual Great Brookhaven Cleanup, staff and patrons from the li-

brary started early May 17, on the northern section of Terryville Road, cleaning up garbage along the wooded areas. They collected over eight large bags of garbage, two hub caps and a lot of plastic and glass bottles.

Port Jefferson plays host to Memorial Day tribute

BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Members and compatriots of the American Legion Wilson Ritch Post 432 in Port Jefferson Station hosted their annual Memorial Day commemoration at Veterans Memorial Park right in front of Port Jefferson Harbor.

After a presentation of the colors and the wreath laying, veterans lowered the flags at half-mast. The group moved onto the Three Village area, where they participated in the

unveiling of newly rejuvenated veterans memorials in Stony Brook Village and the Setauket Village Green. The work is being done with the efforts of Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) and several local veteran groups and has been funded through outside donations. This first phase of the project was completed by Memorial Day, and the second phase is expected to revitalize the Setauket Veterans Memorial Park and the Port Jefferson Veterans Memorial Park by Veterans Day this fall.

Two women head up Port Jefferson’s Class of 2019 Two young women, Annalisa Welinder and Ava Schully, have, respectively, attained the title of valedictorian and salutatorian for the Port Jefferson Class of 2019.

Welinder has an impressive and diversified high school résumé, including taking eight honors and 12 Advanced Placement courses and one college-level class. She is an Advanced Placement Scholar, a Presidential Scholars Program nominee and a National Latin Exam four-time gold medalist. She serves as president of the Latin Club, is a member of Mathletes and member of the school’s Academic Team.

Welinder is also a member of both the track team and tennis team.

A violinist, Welinder is a member of the prestigious National Youth Orchestra, where she served as a concertmaster in 2017, with which she traveled to numerous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall. She and her brother have run a summer music camp — Sound Strings Long Island — for all age levels and she is a frequent award winner for various violin competitions. Welinder is also interested in creative writing endeavors.

Asked for some words of wisdom to share with future graduates of the school, Welinder had an uncomplicated response. “Everything seems easier and more doable if you enjoy it,” she said.

Welinder is excited to enter the freshman class at Stanford University in September.

Schully, as salutatorian, commended her family, peers and teachers who have helped her succeed in school and other aspects of her life.

Schully’s list of achievements is comprehensive and includes taking 10 AP courses, four honors courses and two college-

level courses. She was on the school’s soccer team in ninth grade and has run on both the school’s track team and cross-country team.

She is a member of the Peer Leadership, Interact, Drama and Latin clubs as well as a member of Tri-M Honor Society and Sources of Strength.

Schully took a service trip to Peru to help build a clean water system for local people, attended a six-week intensive study of classical music at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, took part in the Philadelphia International Music Festival and recently performed on cello in the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern music conference in Pittsburgh.

Her extracurricular activities include being a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York and Stony Brook University Young Artists Program. She has received numerous school awards and is active in the local community.

Schully’s plans after high school include exploring how music can promote community partnerships and cross-cultural relations. She has committed to Brown University where she plans to create her own major that focuses on a mixture of topics including ethnomusicology, human development, international relations, education and nonprofit organizations in an interdisciplinary context.

“Challenge yourself in classes you’re actually interested in and take part in extracurricular activities that you love,” she said. “Don’t worry about doing what you think a college admissions office might want to do and just pursue your passions. The rest will follow.”

“It means everything that he was there — he knew,” Bob Short, a Selden resident said of Cliff Lesmeister, a Port Jefferson Station resident and New York City firefighter. The man had rushed to his aid after he crashed his car and stopped on a lawn in Selden and went into cardiac arrest Feb. 25.

Four months later, Short and Lesmeister reunited for the first time since the incident at Stony Brook University Hospital May 28. The 28-year veteran of the FDNY and Olivia Hoerner, an EMT from the Selden fire department, were presented with the Stony Brook University Heart Institute’s HeartSaver Community Award.

Lesmeister was off-duty and was parked on the other side of the road taking a phone call when he witnessed Short’s car crash. He and a bystander ran across a street, called 911, broke the car window to rescue Bob and started performing CPR. In a short time, the Selden EMS/

fire department responded, and Bob was taken to the Heart Institute. After 15 days of treatment, which included a protected percutaneous coronary intervention procedure, Short was released March 12.

When asked if he remembered anything from that day. Short said he doesn’t remember a thing and when he regained consciousness his wife told him he had suffered a heart attack.

“Something was wrong — I had to act, and I was just happy I was there,” the FDNY firefighter stationed in Astoria said.

Short stated he didn’t know what he could say to the firefighter and said he didn’t know if he’s supposed to be here or not supposed to be here after all that has happened.

“You are supposed to be here,” Lesmeister reassured him.

Recipients of the HeartSaver Community Award are recognized for delivering exemplary cardiac care to the community at large by the Heart Institute’s Chest Pain Center and Door-toBalloon Committee.

Obituary

Shirley Weiner

Shirley Weiner, a resident of Port Jefferson for 44 years, passed away May 13 and was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery May 16. She was 87.

Weiner was born in Brooklyn in 1931 and lived in many different places before settling in Port Jefferson, including Brazil and the Azores Islands in Portugal where her husband served as a diplomat.

After raising four children, she went back to school to earn her master’s degree in social work at Stony Brook University. She worked

as a social worker at Stony Brook University Hospital for 16 years before retiring. In her retirement, Weiner was able to develop her passion for watercolor painting and had several local shows of her artwork. She was also an avid reader and active member of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library book club.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Weiner; her sons Robert, Daniel and Alex; her daughter Joan; their spouses; and 11 grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed.

Mattituck showed why it’s the top seed in the division, keeping the Royals at bay to take the Suffolk title 14-10.

Port Jeff junior Aidan Kaminska topped the scoring charts for the Royals, netting four goals. Sophomore Gage Jampol along with sophomore teammate Daniel Koban each

scored twice, and senior Jonathan Moshe and junior Colton VanOverberghe both stretched the net. Freshman keeper Peter Murphy had eight saves on the day. The Royals conclude their season at 8-7 in the division, 10-7 overall.

The applicant must demonstrate an understanding and experience in facilities management and the ability to manage an allocated budget of $880,000 annually; Directs a staff of 4 Kennel Attendants and 4 Animal Control Officers in the routine maintenance and wellbeing of the Shelter clients and operations; Maintains an established and aggressive Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) program throughout the 55 square miles of Town of Smithtown’s jurisdiction; works with the Town’s Public Information Officer, community and volunteer groups to publicize the Adoption Center via social media, fairs and other suitable public venues; Maintains standard operating procedures and submits reports on all phases of Animal Shelter operations to the appropriate regulatory agencies and the Town Board; establishes and sustains effective working relationships with the general public, surrounding municipal shelters, and bona fide not for profit rescue groups.

Minimum requirements: Veterinarian Technician license, with four (4) years of paid experience in the care and handling of animals in an institutional setting, two (2) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or Associates Degree in Animal Care or related field, and experience as described above; or Graduation from HS with six (6) years of experience as described above; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary: $85,000/yr. with generous and comprehensive benefits package.

Open the freezer Despite the hours we work to consistently get this paper into your hands and the local news to your eyes and your ears, we cannot be everywhere at once. Our budgets are ever-more limited, and our attention is pulled to all parts of our coverage areas.

News outlets having to cut staff and resources means there are gaps of information. We do our best, and we hope you agree it is well worth the buck you paid for it, but perfect coverage is impossible in this day and age.

Something will move in to fill the gap — it’s the nature of these things. Surprisingly, that hole has been filled with something that was once used for college kids to learn who was dating whom, that being Facebook.

It’s amazing how much information is parsed and spread through individual Facebook pages, along with both private and public groups. You have community pages, moms pages, VFWs, even small municipalities like fire departments and villages all using their pages to get messages out. For us journalists, Facebook has become a tool to gather stories, sources and even occasionally to conduct interviews.

But for residents, Facebook is a razor-barbed rose. Disturbingly, to professional journalists who do their absolute best to get to the heart of the truth, the opposite is regularly proliferated through these same Facebook pages. Rumors fly across social media faster than any one person could hope to actually investigate each post.

At meetings, we often hear officials complain about the rumors spread online, though we journalists condemn any elected official who should ever truly complain about a community becoming engaged, looking at the overall low polling numbers across the spectrum. However, this activism on the community’s side is not helped with false facts.

Taking journalism classes in college, students are often first made to take a media literacy course, which helps students identify false information when it’s presented to them. One phrase, which became a tagline at the media literacy course at Stony Brook University, was “open the freezer,” relating to a media report back to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans back in 2005. One broadcast claimed the bodies of those who died during that traumatic storm and its aftermath had been stacked in a walk-in freezer as they were waiting for transport. However, the news report was false, there were no bodies in the freezer. The problem? The reporter never bothered to open the freezer and see for themself.

Don’t take what is on Facebook for truth automatically, as each one of us can be a little journalistic even without a degree.

Try researching online, try calling the people referenced in these stories. Don’t take any information presented for you at its face value. Skepticism is healthy for the eager news junkie.

Never let what you read on Facebook be the end to a story. Be sure to take a peek inside that proverbial freezer.

The race is on for Port Jefferson mayor There’s a mayoral race going on in Port Jefferson. We can see in this race the two very different approaches to political power and to community that are also vying at the national level. Neither approach is perfect, so whichever approach one favors, it will pay to understand the appeal, and limitations, of both. In a way, the names of the two parties fighting it out in Port Jeff say it all.

John Jay LaValle, of the Residents First Party, is challenging the incumbent mayor, Margot Garant, of the Unity Party.

The name Unity Party suggests bringing diverse constituencies together to achieve strength — a thriving village with a vibrant downtown. Yet, true unity is a tricky thing, for it must find a way to include those who were not first and foremost for

“unity” over more narrow interests. Here is one of the dilemmas faced nationally by the Democratic Party, whose vision of “inclusion” too seldom includes the 63 million citizens who voted for Trump — 46 percent of those who voted and 27 percent of all eligible voters.

The name Residents First Party suggests a local government that prioritizes the locals over various other interests.

Nationally, this was the appeal made by Trump’s “America First” campaign — a promise to prioritize the individual American over globalized business interests and treaty obligations. The premise in both cases is that “others” are taking advantage of “us” — be it out-of-towners taking advantage of Port Jefferson or Europeans and Chinese taking advantage of the

U.S. The risk, of course, is isolating our town — or our country — from important sources of strength and prosperity.

In one month, if we can avoid anything so uninspiring as a tie, we will find out what this single village chooses. That, in turn, may be a window into how we Americans can understand each other better. As long as we all live in our respective Port Jeffs — and as long as we all live in America — that will matter.

Loucks and Garant do well for PJ village As the president of the Country Club Advisory Committee the past four years and a member of that committee for a number of years prior, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Trustee Stan Loucks and Mayor Margot Garant. Although Stan has been a close personal friend for many years, I feel I can speak about him objectively.

Stan is truly a unique, honorable and dedicated individual. He takes the responsibilities of a trustee extremely seriously and gives his time unselfishly. He is the

type of person who is sorely needed today at all levels of government. I have personally seen Stan perform a physical task at the country club all day and then attend a three-hour meeting that night. His love for our village and the country club is unquestionable.

Mayor Margot Garant never ceases to amaze me. She is totally immersed in the success of every aspect of Port Jefferson village. I have been a Port Jeff resident since 1978 with varying levels of involvement in

village affairs and have never seen a mayor who gives so freely of their time and cares so deeply about the needs of each and every resident. Importantly in government, she is a person who identifies the problem, comes up with a solution and “gets thing done.”

We have been lucky to have these two individuals who team so well together, working for us. I hope that will continue for many more years.

Managing the uneasy marriage between determination and doubt

W

e generally don’t have to look too far to find difficult marriages. But what about the unions that reside

inside us?

Determination and doubt travel together when we’re making a decision, when we’re confronting the naysayers and when we’re preparing for the next steps in our lives.

Sure, I could take the harder assignment, prove something to D. None myself or my boss, of the above venture into the unknown in my

BY DANIEL DUNAIEF area of expertise, or I could stick with what I know, take jobs that will be manageable and remain in my comfort zone.

Determination is often considered the more admirable member of this marriage. Such fortitude pushes us to set new expectations and to venture into arenas where the risks we take could cause physical or emotional bruises.

We see determination when we look at the faces of people running up a hill, returning home late from work, or practicing their musical instruments until they develop rings on their lips or red welts on their necks.

When we’re seeking inspiration, we read about or consider the determination of others, who overcome financial, emotional or logistical limitations and exceed everyone’s expectations but their own. Determination is akin to an offroad vehicle that we maneuver into untrodden or difficult terrain, hoping our suspension and alignment can handle the sudden and unexpected contours of a landscape better suited for pictures or studies of nature than for travel.

While it has a bad reputation, doubt, like the blue girl Sadness from the movie “Inside Out,” also has its place. Doubt can, of course, make the determined part of ourselves even more steadfast,

as we seek to prove to ourselves and everyone else that we can and will accomplish anything.

Doubt is the rain that can make the sunshine that much sweeter.

Doubt also can spring from reason and understanding, as in, “I doubt climbing to the top of that tree, when I haven’t maneuvered to the top of a tree in years, is a good idea.”

Yes, doubt can and does save us, not just from embarrassment but from injuries, discomfort or dead ends.

Reflexively ignoring doubt as an unwelcome voice whispering in our ear carries risks that may be unnecessary, such as ignoring a “Beware of the Dog” sign before jogging through a stranger’s yard.

So, how do we deal with this married couple?

Do we let determination rule the day most of the time, while we periodically give doubt the chance to share concerns about obstacles and consequences?

The answer depends on the circumstance.

What is the downside to acknowledging, understanding and appreciating the origin and

potential benefit of a doubt?

This doubt shouldn’t need to hide behind the punch bowl, sit in the dark with the coats in a back bedroom, or wait in the car while determination gets to run wild, pushing our limits.

We should consider doubt — whether we or someone else expresses it — in the open, allowing ourselves to ponder and plan for the difficulties ahead, giving ourselves a chance to make informed decisions and to see a few steps into the maze of our future.

Our doubt may help us find a better course of action, redirecting and refocusing a determination that enables us to persevere over the course of a future filled with potential but riddled with uncertainty.

If our determination makes a better case than our doubt, at least we’ve benefited from the marriage that lives in us. Indeed, at its finest, determination should not only understand and appreciate doubt, but this tenacity should also use concerns and objections as motivation, giving determination the opportunity to win over the concerns doubt expresses.

From sudden choices, deep roots grow

ncredible as it seems to me, it was exactly 50 years ago that we started packing for our move to the North Shore of Long Island. We were on an Air Force base in Texas at the time and had originally not planned to come here. It was 1969, the Vietnam War (a part of our everyday life in the military) was raging, both Kennedys and Martin Luther King had been assassinated, the country was being ripped apart by riots, and until that moment we had intended to settle permanently in San Diego. My husband, who loved warmer weather, Between had researched the you and me climate throughout

tour of duty ended, we should live on the southern California coast.

So we were taking our two sons, the third still in utero, to settle on the other side of the country from the city in which we were both born. But our families were still in New York.

And when the time came for us to declare our intentions to the movers, we couldn’t go through with the decision. In those chaotic times, family seemed the most important element of our lives.

My parents were our children’s only grandparents, my husband’s parents having both passed away some years earlier. Our children were my parents’ only grandchildren, and they all adored each other.

To everyone’s surprise we changed our plans at the last minute and wound up in Stony Brook, attracted by the coming medical center, which my husband felt would enrich his ophthalmology practice. The rest is history, our history interacting with our hometown, and after half a century I will say that the community never disappointed.

our third son was born and where I was cared for like royalty. After a nomadic year of renting, we found a beautiful piece of property in the middle of the woods and borrowed to the hilt so that we could build a modest ranch house there.

My husband started his solo practice—that’s what physicians did in those days—in a small medical building in Port Jefferson, and after six months we could afford linoleum to cover the subflooring in the kitchen. A year later we were able to pave the driveway. We regarded those as personal high water marks.

Meanwhile we loved, loved, loved the beaches, the creeks and the rivers within easy drive. We swam, collected all manner of shells and identified them for our children, we rode tire tubes into the harbor as the tide swept us out of the creek and we rented kayaks to paddle on the Nissequogue River. Our big expenditure was a Sailfish that we kept on the rack at the beach, and we sailed across Stony Brook Harbor to the Smithtown beach.

Clark Library and the Civic Association. People welcomed us, we found friends—or rather our children found friends and we then became friends with the parents—and we enjoyed the social and cultural scenes thoroughly.

Our children were educated in the local school district well enough to continue in life and thrive. We thank the many teachers, administrators, counselors and other personnel who every day delivered that fine effort.

My husband’s practice grew, and so did our children, so that shortly after the youngest started first grade I was able to realize my dream: starting a hometown newspaper to serve these villages. Again, our work was welcomed and our lives blossomed. I am thrilled every time I meet new residents and visitors to our area. Those contacts are invariably enriching, and we take our mission to provide impartial information and protect the community to be a noble pursuit.

Over the years, I have been lucky enough to be joined by highly committed colleagues.

After 50 years, we can look back and know that we made the right choice.
