Community packs PJS/TCA meeting to share anger with gov’t officials

A viral video of a lewd act in public and rumors about a large-scale new development project are probably why most attended the meeting, but emotions set the tone.

Anger, passion, fear and compassion flowed like a river during a nearly three-hour meeting of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association at the Comsewogue Public Library May 22. It was the civic’s scheduled meeting for May, but the regular members acknowledged this was an out-ofthe-ordinary community gathering.

Earlier this month, a cellphone video of two people, believed to be homeless, having sex at a Suffolk County bus stop in Port Jefferson Station spread not only across the community, but the country. As a result of that incident, and in an effort to ascertain the facts about an announcement made by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) office May 10 that he was allocating about $8 million in funding for a large-scale affordable housing apartment complex for the homeless in Port Jeff Station, the civic association invited leaders from across local government to attend and field resident questions and concerns.

“This is how it starts,” civic association President Edward Garboski said at one point during the meeting, as tensions rose among the approximately 200 people who crammed into The Richard Lusak Community Room at the library. “None of these people are going

to give you a solution to this problem tonight.

Most of the people in this room have never been to a civic meeting. This is how it starts.

We invited all these people here. They’re going to hear us speak. We continue to fight — together.”

The discussion began with Suffolk County Department of Social Services Commissioner John O’Neill answering questions for about an hour. O’Neill was pressed with questions about the concentration of shelters for the homeless in the Port Jefferson Station area, oversight of the locations and curfew rules, and how the locations are selected. He said it was against the law to publicize the location of homeless shelters, though he said if he were legally allowed he would compile a list by zip code. He said the shelters in most cases are privately owned, and if they are compliant with state and federal regulations, they are approved with no consideration taken regarding volume of like facilities in the area. O’Neill also said checks are done regularly at all county shelters to ensure they are in compliance with regulations.

“The argument with the homeless is they need help, we know this,” PJS/TCA Vice President Sal Pitti said. “Everybody here in one way, shape or form has collected food, done something for a homeless individual. I think our biggest issue is the lack of supervision at these locations.”

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Suffolk County Police Department 6th Precinct Inspector Patrick Reilly also attended the meeting and fielded questions from the attendees.

“I live in Port Jefferson Station as well, so I’m not coming from another community saying ‘Oh, it’s not that bad,’” Cartright said.

“I love where I live, but there are issues and we need to deal with them. It’s a complex issue and it doesn’t happen overnight. We are committed — I can say that for each of us that are sitting here today — to trying to make a difference and coming up with solutions.”

One suggestion that emerged from the meeting is the necessity for a 24-hour hotline

to contact the county DSS when issues occur in the community. Currently the hotline only operates during business hours. Reilly said he believes a viable answer to reduce crime in the area, especially in the vicinity of Jefferson Shopping Plaza, would be the installation of more police surveillance cameras. Residents were also repeatedly urged to call the police when observing illegal activities, and to stay engaged with civic association efforts to foster a strength-in-numbers approach.

Many of the elected officials said they plan to be back at the association’s next meeting July 24 to unveil plans for revitalization in the area near the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road station.

Valet parking back for ‘18

To try to alleviate one of the village’s longest standing criticisms, the Port Jefferson Business Improvement District is taking another shot at a valet parking program to make finding a spot easier while patronizing downtown stores and restaurants on the weekends. The program was first instituted in July 2017 on an experimental basis, with cars dropped off in the Meadow parking lot, located south of Roessner Lane, west of Main Street and east of Barnum Avenue, adjacent to Rocketship Park. The increased traffic entering and exiting the parking lot and obstruction of spaces used for visitors of the nearby restaurants were among the complaints resulting from last year’s program that were tweaked for 2018.

“Last year’s location was less than optimal, in that cars were being staged on a very busy entrance to our busiest parking lot,” said Kevin Wood, parking administrator for the village, who will receive regular reports from BID representatives on the execution of the program throughout the summer. “The village has a responsibility to look at all ways and solutions to bring optimal parking options to its visitors and residents and reduce ‘parking anxiety.’”

This year, the drop-off point will be the parking lot behind Village Hall on West Broadway. The building has separate driveways for entering and exiting.

“The location at Village Hall is a very natural setting for staging cars with an entrance and an exit and a semi-circle flow,” he said.

The program will still cost users $7 but will only be offered from 5 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Last year

A quiet toy breed might be better utilized in a hospital setting where it can be placed on a bed, while larger sporting breeds might do well in a residential program for teenage boys, according to Burch.

“In a funeral home, a dog would be needed that can provide comfort while remaining under control in this quiet setting where people are upset and in emotional pain,” she said.

Moloney said he saw the success funeral homes throughout the country have had when employing therapy dogs and that a friend in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, used a grief therapy dog with triumphant results, so Moloney thought he’d try to do the same on Long Island.

Kota is certified through Sublime K9 Dog Training, a Wantagh-based organization that among other things, provides dog obedience training and therapy dog services.

“He’s been certified and has passed the test, an obedience test, and needs to be calmer in crowds and he’s passed all of those requirements,” Moloney said. “Kota gets groomed on a regular basis so he’s clean and he’s very well maintained and he has all of his shots. We keep him up to date of course.”

Anne Moyer, associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University, said while more conventional forms of therapy generally involve interaction with a skilled professional, there is evidence suggesting animal interaction can be beneficial.

Peter Moloney, owner of the funeral homes and Kota’s personal handler, gives the grieving man a treat for Kota, which the docile dog gladly accepts before gently resting his head in the man’s lap.

“The man came into the funeral home with his family and his daughter and he was brokenhearted at the loss of his wife,” Moloney said. “Kota provided him with a sense of comfort and he was very appreciative.”

The owner explained the thought process behind having Kota on-hand in the

right situations.

“Pets are known to reduce stress and anxiety and take people to another dimension in the grief process,” he said.

Moloney’s daughter, Erin, rescued the dog while she was studying at the University of Arkansas, and when Kota was introduced to the family one Thanksgiving Erin’s father knew that Kota would be a perfect candidate as a therapy dog.

Aptly nicknamed “Kota the Comfort Dog,” the young canine travels with Moloney wherever he is needed and has made appearances with his owner across all seven family run funeral homes located throughout Suffolk County, including in Port Jefferson Station.

“He’s a wonderful companion and he’s provided tremendous comfort to families that have encountered him that have a fondness for pets,” Moloney said. “He’s not for everybody, and I would never introduce him to a family without at least having some type of conversation surrounding pets and animals. We would not want to invade someone’s privacy [who] perhaps was afraid.”

While Kota is currently the only certified therapy dog to be used for support in funeral homes on Long Island, according to Moloney, dogs like him have long since been used for similar purposes.

Therapy dogs have been implemented for those in need of comfort as far back as the 1700s, primarily for those people suffering from mental health problems, said Mary Burch, American Kennel Club spokesperson and director of the Canine Good Citizen program, which is used as a prerequisite for many groups that use therapy dogs.

“In the 1970s there were several large organizations that registered therapy dogs and currently, there are hundreds of organizations across the country that register therapy animals,” Burch said.

The AKC spokesperson said facilities tend to contact therapy dog organizations that have “tested dogs and determined where they

Kota has been visiting Moloney Family Funeral Homes where he has provided comfort since February and will typically work with families for 20 minutes at a time. Moloney said he is confident his dog will become a fixture at his funeral homes for the foreseeable future.

“Some people have aversions to pets so you know we’re very careful with our approach in introducing him to families,” Moloney said. “But he loves to be petted and he’s very obedient. So, with those characteristics, I felt that he was a very good candidate to assist families within our funeral homes in providing comfort.”

Incidents and arrests May 15–20 Weed arrest

A 54-year-old man from Sound Beach was driving a 2002 Ford near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Eaton Drive in Port Jefferson Station May 18 when, during a traffic stop, police discovered he allegedly had more than 25 grams of marijuana in the vehicle, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fifthdegree criminal possession of marijuana.

Obstructing a ticket writer

While on Main Street in Port Jefferson May 20 at about midnight, a 21-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly shoved a village code enforcement officer who was writing a ticket for another person in an effort to help the person avoid the ticket, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree obstruction of governmental administration.

Driving with suspended license

At about 1:30 a.m. May 16, a 27-year-old man from Patchogue was driving a 2018 Jeep on Nicolls Road in Centereach when during a traffic stop, police discovered he was allegedly driving with a suspended license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Scheme to defraud

Between December 2017 and January 2018, a 40-year-old undomiciled man allegedly engaged in a systemic, ongoing effort to rent apartments that did not belong to him in Terryville to three different women, according to police. He was arrested May 18 in Selden and charged with three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree scheme to defraud.

Illegal possession of shotgun

A 51-year-old man from St. James allegedly possessed and sold a 12-gauge shotgun while at Suffolk Sportsman on East Main Street in Smithtown May 16 despite having been previously convicted of a felony, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Counterfeit $50s

On Nov. 28, 2017, a 44-year-old man from Mastic allegedly knowingly sold counterfeit $50 bills while on Horseblock Road in Medford, according to police. He was arrested May 16 in Selden and charged with two counts of first-degree forgery.

Disturbing a service

At St. Anthony’s Church on Route 25A in Rocky Point May 16 at about 5 p.m., a 36-year-old man allegedly entered and disrupted a service being conducted by yelling, using foul language and making threats to patrons attending while standing on the alter, according to police.

He also had marijuana in his possession, police said. He was arrested and charged with disrupting a religious service, thirddegree criminal trespassing and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Broken window

The window of a 2000 Jeep parked outside of a home on Seville Lane in Stony Brook May 19 at about 11:30 p.m., according to police.

Vehicle damaged

The hood of a 2011 Ford parked on Stony Road in Stony Brook was damaged at about 6:30 p.m. May 20, according to police.

Shoplifting

Clothing and cosmetics were stolen from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket May 18 at about 12:30 p.m., according to police.

Missing purse

A customer at McDonald’s on Route 25A in Miller Place left a purse on the table when she went to use the bathroom at about 1:15 p.m. May 17, and returned to see it was missing, according to police.

Electronics stolen

Electronics were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket May 16 at about 10:30 a.m., according to police.

Car break-ins

An agreement between the BID and Port Jefferson School District remains in place, in which the valet company, Advanced Parking Service, will take 75 percent of profits, leaving the remaining 25 percent to be split evenly between the village and school district. The BID supplied an upfront investment to get the program going for 2018. BID President Tom Schafer said the organization determined it would need about

120 cars to use the service daily to cover the cost of five employees for the company, and anything more than 120 would result in the program turning a profit.

Schafer said he and the BID’s members were glad to hear the program would be given another opportunity with a full season and with what all stakeholders view as a more practical staging area.

Port Jeff’s board of trustees approved the use of the Village Hall lot during a meeting May 21. Multiple meetings took place between the end of the program last year and its ultimate renewal between representatives of the BID, Wood and village elected officials to work out some of the issues that arose in 2017.

“I wouldn’t be doing this if not for the fact that we have Kevin Wood as our parking administrator,” Mayor Margot Garant said during a May 7 board meeting.

Schafer also touted Wood’s involvement as an asset this time around.

“Everyone’s ecstatic,” Schafer said of the BID members. “Kevin Wood has been a great help. He understands that there’s just too many cars.”

The village has also approved hiring two parking ambassadors for this summer, who will be tasked with occupying lots to help parkers use meters, the village’s parking specific mobile phone application and to direct them to available spaces.

The continuation of the project will ultimately be determined by the village, which included a provision in its resolution to terminate the program “at any time or for any reason.”

Valet parking will be available in Port Jeff from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

New garden at St. Charles dedicated to those lost to opioids They say it’s becoming impossible to walk through a crowd and not find at least one person who hasn’t been affected by the opioid crisis. On May 18 a group of more than 50 people, nearly all of whom have lost loved ones, or at least experienced the strain of a loved one having gone through the throws of addiction, gathered at St. Charles Hospital for the unveiling of a new Remembrance and Reflection Garden just outside the Infant Jesus Chapel on hospital grounds.

The idea started with Port Jefferson resident Marcia Saddlemire, whose daughter Nicole passed away as a result of opioid addiction in 2015. She said she didn’t want to leave the memory of her daughter as just an opioid addict.

“I was getting angry watching the news, when they say so many died from overdose in Suffolk County this year, I said, ‘Dammit, she’s not a statistic, she’s a person, she has a name and a life,’” Saddlemire said. “All the mothers agree with this, [their children] don’t want to grow up to be addicts. This is not what they wanted from their lives, they had dreams, they had goals.”

Saddlemire said she didn’t have the connections or know-how to create such a project, so she managed to get in contact with three women — Janet D’Agostino, Maryann Natale and Linda Nuszen — all of whom belong to multiple anti-opioid organizations

Linda Nuszen, Maryann Natale and Janet D’Agostino, parents who have lost children to opioid addiction, during an event dedicating a new garden at St. Charles Hospital May 18. and support groups. They gathered together to plan and create the new garden.

“We want it to be public — we don’t want to hide it,” said Natale, whose son Anthony died of an overdose. “We want them to know it’s an epidemic. This garden also helps those families who are going through such [a] time with an addict.”

St. Charles Hospital was chosen as the location for the garden because of its existing programs fighting opioid addiction, according to the mothers. The hospital has 40 beds that are allotted for chemical dependency rehabilitation, 10 for supervised

detoxification for adults and four for detoxification of adolescents age 12 to 18. Jim O’Connor, the executive vice president of St. Charles Hospital, said the administration expects to receive another 10 beds for detoxification services. He said he also expects to develop an outpatient center at the hospital for addicts who need ongoing, comprehensive care in the next several years.

“We are honored that these families have chosen St. Charles Hospital as the site for this very special garden, as St. Charles is committed to hosting hospital programs which combat Suffolk County’s current ad-

diction crisis,” O’Connor said.

Nearly all work for the project was donated by local businesses. The garden includes stones engraved with the names of victims of opioid addiction and quotes from their families. Ron Dennison and his son Alan from Bohemia-based Long Island Waterjet donated their time to create a heart sign featured in the garden. The sign features large words like “forgiveness” and “understanding” along with small words like “pain” and “fear,” to show positive emotions overcoming the negative.

Dennison’s daughter, Sarah, went through the St. Charles rehab program when she became addicted to opioids. She is out of the program now, and she has a daughter named Serenity.

“When your kids are addicted, you deny it, you deny it, you deny it,” the elder Dennison said as he fought to speak through tears. “And then one day you wake up you say, ‘What is going on here?’”

Nuszen and her family founded Look Up for Adam, a foundation dedicated to her son who died from an overdose in 2015.

Her organization helps to raise awareness.

“So many people don’t know how to show up for our loved ones,” she said. “So many people don’t know how to be themselves, or how to be here for each other. So now ... we can come here and have a place where we’re not isolated — so they [can] come here and know they’re not alone, that there are people who care about them.”

Racing for charity

Ryan Clifford of the Greater Long Island Running Club Racing Team was all by himself for most of the race and scored his second consecutive win in the 15K Run for the Port Jeff Brewing Company May 20, with a 54-minute, 54-second finishing time that brought him to the Brewing Company finish line nearly three full minutes in front of his nearest competition. Clifford’s time this year was nearly two minutes slower than his 2017 winning time.

Smithtown Running Company member Leonora Petrina blazed through the course in 57:48, breaking the women’s course record set by Heather Williams in 2016. She battled Stony Brook’s Mauricio Tejara throughout the race before she pulled away to beat him by 20 seconds.

The first local finishers were Kiernan Kelly

of Port Jefferson, who came in fourth place overall with a finishing time of 1:00:56, August Oetting of Port Jefferson, who finished in 11th place overall in 1:05:59, and Allison Backer of Wading River, who was the third woman to cross the finish line, with a time of 1:08:42.

Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (DSetauket) was also a determined finisher, reaching the finish line in 1:42:37 There were a total of 704 registrants; 564 of them made it to the finish line before the cutoff.

All the returns aren’t in yet, but the event organizers hope to have been able to raise as much $5,000 or more for the two charitable beneficiaries — the Port Jefferson Royal Education Foundation and the Port Jefferson Fire Department Training Center.

Port Jefferson resident Dr. Maria Arlinda Dias completed a near impossible feat for the fourth time while on the Port Jefferson Country Club golf course May 15. On the 143-yard 16th hole, she found the bottom of the cup on her tee shot using a five wood, scoring her fourth career ace, and second at PJCC. She said she was playing with a group of women for the first time and was flattered at how genuinely excited her companions for the day were at her impressive feat.

“I can’t tell you how happy I am that I joined this group,” Dias said.

Students decided on presenting their work to teachers and parents in a Writers Celebration. The class turned their school library into a gallery by pairing their research projects and poems with handmade illustrations that they hung around their media center. Visitors could even purchase the student art. They raised more than $50 and donated it to the World Wildlife Fund.

“It was an amazing learning experience and we got to work together, which led to us having better facts than if we just researched alone,” said fourth-grader Anjali Sooknanan. Dunn said she couldn’t be prouder of her students.

Mather Hospital Chairman Kenneth Jacoppi has received a Distinguished Trustee Award from the United Hospital Fund.

The award, which recognizes extraordinary leadership and service to hospitals, nursing homes, home care and rehabilitation organizations throughout the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Orange counties, New Jersey and Connecticut, was presented at a UHF luncheon in Manhattan April 30. Jacoppi was one of 26 trustees from New York metropolitan-area hospitals and health care organizations who were honored at the event.

“I am honored to be recognized by the United Hospital Fund for this prestigious award,” Jacoppi said. “Having served on Mather’s board of directors for more than 40 years and as chairman since 2006, it has been my privilege to help the hospital grow and evolve into the quality health care delivery system it is today, enabling it to serve the health care needs of our local communities.

After two months of research and hard work, Mrs. Dunn’s fourth-grade class gave presentations to an audience of teachers, administrators and parents at a Writers Celebration at Terryville Road Elementary School. Dunn implemented project-based learning to teach her students how to formulate questions to drive their research.

In conjunction with their research, Dunn had also been reading “The One and Only Ivan,” a book inspired by a true story about a gorilla being raised in a shopping mall.

After many lively class discussions about the characters in the book, the class decided to study the rights of endangered animals. They studied various animals and learned about their physical features, habitats and diets. The students went even further with their studies and worked together to examine the threats these animals

Warriors come up short in first round of playoffs

BY BILL LANDON Comsewogue team almost called it comeback. The girls lacrosse team trimmed a four-goal deficit to one in the final minutes of a first-round Class B playoff game against visiting East Islip May 18, and despite winning possession on the final draw with 20 seconds left, the Warriors failed to find the net, falling 9-8.

“We have awesome players with amazing speed — our seniors Hannah [Dorney] and Brianna [Blatter] stepped up, they played a hell of a game,” Comsewogue head coach Jacqueline Wilkom said. “We had to win that draw and push it down toward the net at the end, but unfortunately the game didn’t end in our favor.”

Dorney, a University of Notre Damebound senior, won possession and Comsewogue called time-out with 20 seconds on the clock. With time for one last shot, the Warriors turned the ball over and the Redmen recovered and let the clock run down.

“We’re very young — we have five middleschoolers and only four seniors,” Dorney

said. “We had two key players out for most of the year, so for awhile we were a little lost.” The senior, who came into the game second among Suffolk County scorers with 85 points, four behind Northport’s Olivia Carner, found the net four times and assisted on a goal in her final Comsewogue lacrosse game. She finished the first half with a hat trick, scoring twice on penalty shots and once off an assist from junior attack Julia Fernandes. Her third goal closed the gap to one, 4-3, and even with No. 5-seeded East Islip countering with two goals in just over a minute’s time, No. 4 Comsewogue came back to keep the deficit the same, with the Warriors down 6-5 at the halftime break.

After the Redmen tallied two more scores to start the second, a Comsewogue penalty put the Warriors at even more of a disadvantage, as East Islip capitalized on the opportunity to go up 9-5. Sophomore Olivia Fantigrossi scored her second goal, freshman Nelida Watson assisted Fernandes’ second and Dorney scored on another penalty shot for the last goal with 29 seconds left.

“We pump each other up from the sidelines, and our bonding in practice is what helped us get this far,” Dorney said. “We’re a family.”

Comsewogue boys lacrosse competes in Class B semis

BY DESIRÉE KEEGAN DESIREE@BRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Comsewogue boys lacrosse team competed in the Class B semifinals at home against No. 3 East Islip May 23.

Led by senior Richie Lacalandra — 62 points on 24 goals and 38 assists so far this season heading into the game — the No. 2 Warriors were looking to get over the semifinal hump after falling in that round the last two seasons.

Prior to the game, Comsewogue stood at 10-5 overall and 10-4 in Division II. If the Warriors win, they will face the winner of the No. 1 Harborfields v No. 5 Rocky Point game in the finals May 30 at Islip High School at 4:30 p.m.

Comsewogue outscored Harborfields 8-3 during the regular season April 11.

Local action while waiting for legislation

While we wait for the federal government to do something about gun control, kids are dying in America’s schools.

For children and school staff members to be filled with fear and anxiety every day thinking they may get killed is unacceptable.

Fortunately, there are things that can be done on the local level, even in our homes, to make schools — places that should foster learning, not fear — safer in the short term.

Fox News recently reported nearly 40 deaths and various injuries resulted from school shootings since the beginning of 2017 in 15 elementary and secondary schools. CNN, which includes universities in its reports, said 22 learning institutions have been the site of shootings in 2018 alone, accounting for more than 30 deaths. Hitting closer to home, Suffolk County Police Department Capt. Kevin Williams spoke at a May 8 Smithtown Town Board meeting and said since the Parkland, Florida, shooting Feb. 14, the 4th Precinct has received a threat against Smithtown-area schools approximately once a day. He said that trend holds true across Suffolk County.

What do we do on the local level? We have covered a number of school board meetings where parents have been allowed to debate about what they feel are the best solutions to keep their children and staff members safe. While some of these board meetings have gone on for hours, due to resistance to ideas like armed guards and metal detectors, keeping our children safe is worth every hour spent at these meetings and every penny the district pays for new measures that will help keep kids out of harm’s way. We encourage parents to keep speaking up. As a result of responding to concerns, many school districts have added additional psychologists to their staffs, too, to allow for easier accessibility. New York State Legislature passed a package of bills in the wake of Parkland allotting more dollars to security and mental health services to districts that want them.

Another example of parents and school administration working together to find solutions occurred at the Shoreham-Wading River’s March 6 board of education meeting. Superintendent Gerard Poole outlined measures the school was taking after the shooting in Parkland. Among the plans was installing a Raptor Visitor Management System in all buildings, a web-based monitoring software designed to track visitors and electronically check them against public databases.

The same meeting also included a forum for students to express their concerns and give suggestions on how to better protect their schools.

A web-based app called “report it,” which many Long Island school districts are using, was also introduced earlier this month to help encourage students to speak up when they see or hear things that trouble them or make them uncomfortable.

School is not the only place where something can be done while we wait. If you own a gun, and keep it in your home, keep it locked up and keep the bullets secured in a separate location. Most of all, explain to your children and teens that a gun is not a toy. Too many news reports begin with a child getting a hold of a parent’s gun. If you are resistant to stricter gun control laws, we beg you to at least ensure you’ve taken all of the possible steps necessary to lock up your weapons.

There’s the issue of bullying, too. Antonios Pagourtzis, the father of Santa Fe shooter Dimitrios Pagourtzis, claimed his son was bullied at the school. The best conversations about how to treat people can occur at home. Talk to your children about being kind to others and to speak up when they see someone being harassed. Most of all, set a good example.

As journalists, we plan to do our part by continuing to report on the conversations going on at local schools, whether they are happening at a board meeting or during a student-organized walkout.

When it comes to legislation, we have no choice but to wait — but we won’t idly sit by and neither should you.

Zeldin on Jewish-American history In December 2005, a resolution recognizing May as Jewish-American Heritage Month passed the House and then the Senate three months later. In a unified front, President George W. Bush reaffirmed this month-long celebration with a presidential proclamation in April 2006. There are few things in our nation’s capital that are agreed upon unanimously, but there is no question when it comes to the contributions of the Jewish people to the fabric of American life.

The history of the Jewish people spans thousands of years, marked by adversity, triumph and a unique Jewish identity that has outlived the Roman Empire, transcended the Middle Ages and prevailed in the face of genocide.

They have made some of the greatest contributions to science, medicine and literature, forever changing our entire way of life while maintaining a community that is uniquely their own.

The scientific advancements pioneered by the Jewish people have revolutionized everything we know about our world from how we view it to its very existence. At just 26 years of age, Albert Einstein, a German-born Jew who continued his work in New Jersey, published four groundbreaking papers that laid the foundation of modern physics and spurred the development of his theory of relativity. Einstein’s reputation for academic achievement is so renown that, today, the name Einstein is synonymous with genius.

Einstein’s academic accomplishments pioneering modern physics are unparalleled, but

Einstein is far from the only Jewish-American who has had a profound effect on even the most commonplace aspects of American life. In 1829, Levi Strauss was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Germany. At the age of 18, Strauss traveled to the United States where he would invent and patent the quintessential American garment — the blue jean — and found the world-renowned denim company Levi’s.

In his success, Levi Strauss went on to become one of San Francisco’s biggest philanthropists, giving to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home, Eureka Benevolent Society and Hebrew Board of Relief.

Levi Strauss’ success, generosity and passion for giving back to his community is representative of the Jewish people as a whole. Throughout hundreds of years, Jewish-Americans have worked to make our nation a better place for their fellow Americans, advocating for women’s rights,

marching alongside the leaders of the civil rights movement, serving in every branch of the military and working at every level of government.

The passion, spirit and character of the Jewish people is something I have aspired to foster in our community and our nation’s capital. In the same way Jewish-American History Month was founded, the importance of passing on the traditions of the Jewish people to the next generation should be agreed upon unanimously.

Founded in its rich culture and history, the JewishAmerican community has shaped the soul of our country, their ideals sewn into the very fabric of American life. Through their actions and willingness to stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellow Americans, they have truly made our nation and our entire world a better place for mankind.

Notes from a 2017 interview with the late Tom Wolfe

H

ow often do you get to talk to someone whose legend loomed large over your childhood?

Last year, I had the privilege of interviewing author Tom Wolfe, who died last week at the age of 88. Wolfe wrote “The Right Stuff,” “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” and “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,” among others. I spoke with Wolfe about astronaut Scott Kelly, who was so inspired by “The Right Stuff” that he directed a life he considered somewhat aimless toward

My conversation was rewarding and memorable, so I thought I’d share my interview with the legendary author.

DD: Kelly credits you with putting him on a path that led him to spend almost a year aboard the International Space Station. Is there a satisfaction that comes from that?

TW: Nothing else I’ve written has

had such a beautiful result. He told me he’d been floundering around trying to figure out what to do with his life. He hadn’t been doing well in school. Then he just got the idea of going into space and became an astronaut.

DD: Did you know he took “The Right Stuff” with him?

TW: He sent me from the space station a picture of the cover on his iPad. That was one of the greatest messages I ever got.

DD: Do you think Kelly’s mission increased the excitement about space?

TW: There’s been a general lack of a sense of heroism in much of the post-World War II era and there were people who responded to the space program in general in that fashion.

DD: How does the excitement now compare to the early days of the space program?

TW: John Glenn’s return created a lot of excitement. At that time, we seemed to be at war in space with the Russians. That was what kept the space program going. There was always this threat. It’s very hard to hit the Earth from space. You’ve got three speeds: the speed of what you fired the rocket with, then you’ve got the speed at the end of that opening shot and you’ve got the speed of hitting the

Earth, which is moving.

DD: How do you think people will react to Kelly’s mission?

TW: It remains to be seen whether it inspires young people the way the Mercury program did.

DD: What drove the space program until that point?

TW: Wernher van Braun [a German engineer who played a seminal role in advancing American rocket science] spoke in his last year.

The point of the space program was not to beat the Russians. It was to prepare for the day when the sun burns out and we have to leave Earth and go somewhere else. It’s hard to imagine everybody shipping off to another heavenly body.

DD: Getting back to Kelly, how difficult do you think Kelly’s mission was?

TW: Scott Kelly’s adventures were a test of the human body and the psyche. Being that removed from anybody you could talk to and see must be a terrible stress. That’s what he and others in the space station are chosen for.

DD: Do people like Kelly still need “the right stuff” to be astronauts?

TW: It’s the same except anyone coming into the program is more confident that these things can be done. For Mercury astronauts, these

things were totally new. The odds against you, the odds of death, were very high.

DD: What advice did you give to Kelly when he started writing his book?

TW: Begin at the beginning.

So many of the astronauts and other people who have memorable experiences will start with the adventure to get you interested.

Then, the second chapter, suddenly you’re saying, “Harold Bumberry was born in 1973,” and it makes you take a deep breath [and say], ‘OK, here it comes.” Whereas starting at the beginning always works.

DD: What do you think of the movies made about your books?

TW: I think they’re terrible. Three of my books were made into movies and I disliked them all. The reason being they didn’t do it like I did.

You can’t do a lot of things in a movie that you can in print. You’re better at presenting themes, better at dialogue. You can hear it, you can’t get inside a mind of a character the way you can in print. Movies don’t have time.

DD: What impact did Scott Kelly’s being inspired by your book have on you?

TW: It’s the best compliment I’ve ever gotten.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as

they moved off. “Because I can’t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer,” he explained to them.

18. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt, and is named Ahmal. The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him Juan.

Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins. If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.”

19. A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The call went out that there was a small medium at large.

20. And finally, there was the person who sent 20 different puns to his friends with the hope that at least 10 of the puns would make them laugh.
