Voters pass Comsewogue and Port Jeff school district budgets Unopposed board of education races go to incumbents, one newcomer in Port Jefferson

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Compared to Election Day in November, the May version for school district budget votes and board of education candidates in the Port Jefferson area was seriously lacking in drama.

Board of education races came to a close in the Port Jefferson and Comsewogue school districts May 16 with little suspense, as two candidates ran for two open seats in each district. Both districts’ budgets were also passed, with 82 percent of Port Jeff voters and 79 percent in Comsewogue giving their stamp of approval to the 2017-18 spending plans.

A second proposition on the ballot in Port Jeff was also overwhelmingly passed by the community, allowing the district to release $456,000 from a capital reserve fund Adam DeWitt to be used on renovations and infrastructure-related improvement projects.

of education, administration, students and staff, I extend my appreciation to the Port Jefferson community for their continued support of our district,” Superintendent Paul Casciano said in an emailed statement.

“Through the approval of our school budget, our district will continue to offer our students a high quality educational program.

Additionally, the support of Proposition 2 allows the district to replace portions of the high school and middle school roof, continuing our investment in district facilities.”

Port Jeff’s 2017-18 budget will be nearly $43 million, a roughly 3.5 percent increase over last year. Almost $36 million of revenue will come from property taxes. The budget was passed with 338 “yes” to 74 “no” votes.

Adam DeWitt will begin his third term on the Port Jeff board of education after receiving 357 votes. He and newcomer Dave Keegan, with 356 votes, each ran unopposed for two seats.

“I am very grateful to the Port Jefferson community for giving me the opportunity to join the Board of Education,” Keegan said in an email. “I am excited to begin my tenure and to contribute to helping keep the Port Jefferson School District among the best public school systems in the country.”

DeWitt said in a phone interview he was thrilled with the support the community showed for the upcoming year’s

spending plan.

“I couldn’t be prouder to continue to serve on the board for another three years,” he added.

Comsewogue

Voters in Comsewogue passed the district’s approximately $90 million budget by a 789 to 208 margin.

The district’s tax levy will be 2.8 percent higher than for the current year.

Ali Gordon, who ran unopposed, will begin her third term James sanchez on Comsewogue’s board of education beginning in July after receiving 882 votes.

The Town of Brookhaven will save $7.15 million during the next decade through a major bond refinancing.

The 11-year bonds, which were originally issued in 2008 and 2010 to finance town-wide improvements to parks, landfills, roads, town facilities, and historic/open space preservation, were sold at an interest rate of 1.65 percent, replacing the original bonds with rates of more than 4 percent.

The new bonds were sold during the lowest interest rate environment since November 2016, with the 10-year Treasury Bond peaking at 2.6 percent during the last several months and hitting a low of 2.18 percent on the day of the bond sale.

“Brookhaven’s AAA credit rating and conservative fiscal management poli-

cies have allowed us to once again take advantage of historically low interest rates,” said supervisor Ed Romaine (R.) In addition to refinancing the bonds, the town paid down $2.7 million of the outstanding principal. Paying down the debt on the old bonds resulted in interest cost savings to support future budgets.

“Unlike many other municipalities that are struggling fiscally, Brookhaven’s finances are getting stronger,” said Jane Bonner, councilwoman (C-Rocky Point) and the Town Board liaison to the finance department. “I look forward to working ... in the year ahead to build on the success we have achieved.”

Brookhaven had nine investors bid competitively on the new money bond sale. The strong investor confidence and interest puts the town in a unique position to achieve high interest cost savings for the taxpayers.

Port Jefferson hospital a model for “green” initiatives

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com A Port Jefferson-area hospital is setting trends in reducing its environmental impact. A number of new initiatives at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital have turned the facility into an energy efficiency machine, but the hospital’s director of engineering, design and construction said they’re not done trying to improve.

“I would say Mather is one of the most progressive hospitals on the Island in terms of green energy renewable technology and reducing carbon footprint,” Brian Hassan, PSEG Long Island lead account manager for health care, said in a phone interview. He added if other hospitals followed Mather’s lead it would be beneficial to reducing substantial carbon footprint that can be left by facilities that consume large amounts of energy. The glowing assessment can be attributed in large part to the efforts of Kevin Koubek, the engineering director at Mather who is constantly working to improve the hospital’s efficiency.

“I think we’ve shown we’re trying to do everything physically and humanly possible to reduce our demand on the grid,” Koubek said in an interview. Between air conditioning and heating, heavy-duty medical equipment, elevators, kitchen equipment, lighting, gift shops, coffee shops and various waiting rooms, the amount of power required to run a hospital is obviously substantial. Koubek

said the hospital is always looking for ways to reduce energy requirements.

“Trying to offset some of this electrical demand is huge, and that’s one of the reasons we have tried to identify where we can minimize our loads,” he said.

Mather is the first Long Island hospital to install a thermal ice storage system to help with cooling the hospital during warmer months. It was installed and became operational earlier in 2017. The system serves to shift a portion of the hospital’s peak electrical load from daytime to nighttime, when electricity is more plentiful, less expensive and generated more efficiently by creating ice using larger air conditioning equipment during off-peak hours, then storing ice in 24 tanks that are used with pumps to generate cool air during the day.

“The day-to-day benefits would be that we’re not turning on this large machine, we’re pulling off the electric grid,” Koubek said.

In the past, before the hospital focused on energy efficiency initiatives, Koubek said much like homes in the summertime, the hospital’s cooling systems had a hard time meeting demand.

“We have to recognize [we] do have patients that for whatever reason, they’re here,” he said. “Their comfort is paramount.”

The chiller was approximately $2 million, though the hospital is expecting a rebate check from PSEG Long Island to cover half the cost.

A 50-kilowatt photovoltaic ground-mounted solar panel was installed in the rear of the parking lot in 2011, and Koubek said the hospital has considered adding more. “[Hospital administration] would love to do that, it’s just very expensive,” he said.

Koubek added the hospital is also in the process of replacing about 300 standard lighting fixtures of the roughly 3,000 at Mather with LED ones. Standard fixtures require about 180 watts of power while LEDs require about 30 watts.

“That’s the one thing that is sort of flying under the radar, but is making a huge impact on us is the fact that we’re on a track to

replace every lighting fixture in the hospital and go to 100 percent LED,” Koubek said.

The hospital is also using lower cost hydropower, or electricity created by utilizing moving water, to reduce its energy costs by $2.5 million through the ReCharge NY award from the New York Power Authority. ReCharge NY is a program designed to retain and create jobs through allocations of low-cost power, half of which is made up of hydropower.

Koubek seemed to embrace the idea that Mather is setting trends for other hospitals in increased efficiency.

“I’d have to say we’re probably one of the leading hospitals on the Island, if not in the state,” he said.

Inside the apartments being built on West Broadway

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Entering Port Jefferson Village via West Broadway looks a lot different these days.

The three-story structure being built on the south side of West Broadway, as drivers turn the corner and head down the hill into the village at what’s known as the community’s western entrance, is sprouting up rapidly and residents are taking notice.

Longtime members of the community have expressed concerns about the substantial size of the apartment complex, dubbed The Shipyard by TRITEC Development Group, the real estate developer responsible for the homes. Others have voiced worries about the impact new residents in the area will have on traffic, the possibility of disturbing the historic feel of the village and breaking with traditional architecture in Port Jeff, and the mindset of people who rent instead of own property —that they are less likely to be conscientious neighbors.

The 112-unit complex of one- and twobedroom luxury apartments is being constructed on the former site of the Heritage Inn motel, and is expected to be completed

by January 2018. TRITEC Vice President Robert Kent and director of marketing Chris Kelly opened the doors to the construction site during an interview May 12 to shed some light on what the community should expect from their new neighbors.

A common theme of letters to the editor submitted by community members was the building seems to exceed the 35-foot maximum established in the village’s code. One letter referred to the structure as “an unnatural behemoth in the middle of a small historic village.”

“Much of [Port Jefferson’s] architecture is historically authentic,” resident Karleen Erhardt wrote. “The natural beauty of its harbor and surrounding hills make it one of the loveliest spots on the North Shore of Long Island. It is no wonder that visitors come here year-round to escape the blur of boxy, vinyl-sided suburbia that now characterizes much of Long Island. The Shipyard has done irreparable damage to the character of Port Jefferson Village. All that we residents can do now is wait for the inevitable traffic congestion in and around our town that can only make life here worse.”

According to Kelly, the height adheres to village code because the currently exposed ground level will be covered with both dirt and eventually a sloped lawn up to the first floor level.

“The reason the code is written like that is because it’s Port Jeff — there’s hills,” Kent said. He added the process of getting plans for the project approved took about two years worth of back and forth with the village building and planning departments, as well as informational sessions for concerned community members. He also addressed claims the building won’t fit with the historic feel of the village. “We took dozens of photographs from homes in Belle Terre, to Danford’s [Hotel & Marina], we looked up historical buildings from the turn of the century, the old train station — we had our architects study all of that to pick a design

The ceiling of the leasing office lobby on the ground floor will be fitted with a grid modeled after century-old plans detailing construction of a 95-foot wooden deck barge, which Kelly said they found in the village’s historical archives.

“There’s a lot of things that take all of the history of this village and we’ve tried to incorporate it into what we’ve done,” Kelly said.

Kent said that transparency has been a key component of TRITEC’s plans throughout the process.

“When we say we’re going to do something we do it,” he said. “When we show you a picture of what we’re going to do that’s what you get. That’s what it looks like when we’re done. The way we do that is by thinking it out, being open and candid up front.”

In another attempt to address community concerns, the complex will only allow for those entering via the West Broadway entrance to make right turns in and right turns out of the property. A separate entrance exists on Barnum Avenue on the building’s southern side, which required the construction of a bridge to go over Mill Creek for entrance into the building’s parking garage.

Kent said TRITEC has spared no expense in the hopes of creating a luxury living option for those wishing to rent in the village. To do that, the company secured financial assistance from the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency.

“To improve economic conditions in their respective areas, IDAs generally attempt to attract, retain and expand businesses within their jurisdictions through the provision of financial incentives to private entities,” an explanation of the role of the agencies from the New York State comptroller’s office said. “IDAs are legally empowered to buy, sell or lease property and to provide tax exempt financing for approved projects.”

As a result, Port Jefferson Village will lose out on property tax revenue, except in the form of payments in lieu of taxes, or PILOTs,

that TRITEC will be required to pay for 15 years, as part of the agreement. To receive IDA financial assistance, the private company must also provide yearly proof of jobs created and retained as a result of the project.

Kent said the project will result in the creation of three to five permanent, fulltime jobs within the building, in addition to the dozens of construction jobs already created, which Kent added could ramp up to more than 100 as the project progresses.

The vice president said the village should expect to see increased patronage of village businesses and restaurants, and a similar project in Patchogue resulted in millions of dollars worth of investment from other private entities looking to capitalize on a revitalized area. An economist hired by the village who studied the possible impact of the various construction projects in Port Jeff reiterated the same point during a presentation to the board in February.

Molly Mason, a village resident for 30 years, said in a phone interview she believes that the tax revenue the village will miss out on pales in comparison to the benefits suggested by TRITEC. She said she voiced concerns about the company pursuing IDA financial assistance during public

hearings years ago.

“I think it’s a real disaster for the village that they were able to get this financial assistance,” she said. “It’s like we’re giving away the store.”

She also said she is worried about the impact on village infrastructure that the additional residences could mean, in addition to the possibility that renters with children would be sending kids to the district without contributing property tax dollars.

Some of the perks and amenities for those living in the new apartments will include various views of the water thanks to an abundance of windows throughout the units and a rooftop deck; dog washing and bike repair stations on the ground floor; full-sized washers and dryers in every unit; a fitness center with weights, machines and cardio equipment; charging stations for electric cars in the parking garage; a plaza area with barbecues, a fountain, fire pits and plenty of landscaping; and an indoor common area that features televisions, areas to do work, and couches, among many other perks.

Occupied home burglarized in Port Jefferson

By AlEx PETRoSKi alex@tbrnewspapers.com Three men entered a home, assaulted the homeowner and stole money and a pickup truck at about midnight May 15 at a home on Sheep Pasture Road in Port Jefferson, according to Suffolk County Police Department Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.

“Detectives have credible informa-

tion that this location was targeted and not a random act,” Meyers said in an emailed statement through a police spokesperson. “Patrols will be stepped up in the area as part of the investigation.”

The homeowner was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and the investigation by 6th Squad detectives is ongoing.

Victorian-era horse track named landmark

By KEvin REDDinG kevin@tbrnewspapers.com What was once an abandoned and forgotten horse racing track in a stretch of woods in Terryville is now a Brookhavendesignated historic landmark.

The town board voted unanimously during its May 11 meeting to recognize the Gentlemen’s Driving Park, the last Victorian-era harness racing track on Long Island, as an historic landmark and by doing so, solidified the hard work of the local residents and elected officials who helped to make it happen.

The half-mile track, before it became hidden among trees, was a popular gathering place for bettors in the late 19th century to watch men race around the loop behind horses in carts. It was part of a circuit of tracks in the Northeast — others sat in Smithtown, Setauket and Riverhead — and is the last remaining one.

“I urge you to recognize it,” Barbara Russell, Brookhaven town historian, said before the board made their decision.

Russell played a huge part in providing historical context to the site when Jack Smith, president and founder of the Cumsewogue Historical Society, initially kicked off the project more than a year ago.

She made all resources of her office available to the historical society, including original photographs of the track donated by the historic Davis family and firsthand accounts of these races through old letters.

Smith discovered the faint outline of the horse track from a satellite image on Google Earth upon hearing of its existence off Canal Road, and eventually went to the site with his wife Pam, to examine it more closely. To his delight, he ended up finding pieces of Long Island history scattered throughout the 11-acre site, including a broken pair of Victorian-era field glasses close to where the finish line of the track would’ve been as well as a race day ticket from 1892.

Smith then reached out to former Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld and other

council members about acquiring the site, clearing the overgrown path and restoring it. Rosenfeld, Smith said, saw the value in preserving the site and laid the groundwork to make the project possible.

The Gentlemen’s Driving Park officially opened to the public in October.

“The landmark status recognizes the importance of preserving this colorful and almost forgotten part of Brookhaven Town’s history,” Smith said in a phone interview.

“The driving park is now a collective symbol of the many large driving parks that once dotted the Long Island landscape ...

Long Island being the birthplace of horse racing in America. I’m happy the society as a whole was able to play an integral part in getting this important part of our history preserved.”

Smith said Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) picked up where Rosenfeld left off when she was first elected.

“She took it through some difficult negotiations and brought the whole thing to fruition,” he noted. “Her diligence and hard work, tremendous optimism and skill in bringing everything together have culminated in the preservation … .”

Cartright expressed her excitement about the designation in an emailed statement. She described the endeavor as a three-step process — first the town’s acquisition of the park in 2014, then the reopening in 2016, and finally receiving the landmark designation last week.

“During each of these steps, and for several years prior to my taking office, Jack Smith has been at the forefront of the Gentlemen’s Driving Park project,” she said.

“The activism, research and unwavering support of Jack and the Historical Society has been an inspiration. The historic landmark status draws additional attention to Gentlemen’s Driving Park and is an honor the rich history of the location and all those who helped preserve it certainly deserve.”

Smith said the town plans to build a Victorian-style gate as an entranceway to the track.

Police BloTTer Incidents and arrests May 9 – May 15 Screwed

A 23-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station used a screwdriver to damage the door frame of an apartment on Barraud Drive in Port Jefferson Station at about 1:30 p.m.

May 15, according to police. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

Punching while playing pool

At JMF Billiard on Main Street in Port Jefferson Station May 9, a 23-year-old man from Bay Shore got into a fight with another man, punched him in the face and stole cash, a phone and jewelry from the man, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery.

A bite out of crime

On April 27 at about 9:30 p.m., a 19-yearold man from Centereach was involved in an altercation with another man on Tree Road in Centereach, according to police.

He bit the other man and damaged his 2017 Hyundai, police said. He was arrested May 13 and charged with criminal mischief and third-degree assault.

A 55-year-old man from Selden, who had previously been banned from all Starbucks locations because of a prior incident, entered a Starbucks on Middle Country Road in Selden at about 9 p.m. May 11, according to police. He was arrested and charged with trespassing.

Hit and run

On March 12 at about 9 p.m., a 34-yearold woman from Riverhead driving a 2013 Toyota on Mooney Pond Road in Farmingville struck a parked, unoccupied 2013 Honda and fled the scene without exchanging contact information, according to police. She was arrested May 10 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

At about 4 a.m. May 13, a 21-year-old man from Hampton Bays was driving a 2007 Nissan erratically on Route 347 in Stony

Brook when he was pulled over for failing to maintain his lane, according to police.

During the stop police discovered he was driving under the influence of alcohol, and he fought off officers and pulled away his hands while being arrested, police said.

He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

At about 6:30 p.m. May 12, a resident of a home on Christian Avenue in Setauket came home and saw someone fleeing the property with a television and laptop in his hands, according to police. When the burglar saw the resident he dropped the items and fled, police said.

John was born in 1927 in Brooklyn, where he graduated from St. Francis Preparatory High School. John received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New York University.

In 1968, John relocated to Port Jefferson where he worked at Stony Brook University for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife Madeline Mullane; four sons, John, Hugh, Michael and Tom; two daughters, Mary Flynn, and Beth MacPhail; three daughters-inlaw, Mary Beth Swindell-Mullane, Cath-

erine McCarthy and Karen Mullane; two sons-in-law, Ken Flynn and Ian MacPhail; and 17 grandchildren. His sister, Patricia Connors, and her husband, Joseph Connors, as well as his parents, Michael and Florence Mullane, predeceased him.

The family celebrated Catholic funeral rites at St. Matthew Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his ashes were entombed at the columbarium on the church property.

Several Royals athletic stars over the last few years alone started on varsity teams when they were in seventh grade. Seniors Courtney Lewis and Corinne Scannell started playing varsity basketball at that age, and senior Jillian Colucci started on the soccer team the same year. All three were members of the basketball team that reached the state finals in 2017, and Scannell and Colucci won back-to-back state championships as members of the soccer team the past two seasons.

“I don’t think they should openly ban seventh-graders — in Courtney’s case it worked out fine,” Lewis’ father Todd said. “It’s not really fair.

It’s like saying no one can go into the NBA if they’re too young, even if they’re ready for it.”

Casciano argued the successful cases are few and far between.

“There wasn’t one instance that caused us to make this change, but you only hear about Jillian Colucci or Courtney Lewis because it worked out well,” he said. “You don’t hear about the other ones that didn’t work out well.”

Lewis admitted he was concerned about whether his daughter was physically, socially and psychologically ready, also noting the bus rides, but said all of the older girls were good kids.

“It went better than I thought it would,” he said. “There was nothing that popped up that I know of in junior high or high school that shows anything went wrong with it.”

Courtney Lewis played travel basketball for a few years, and her father, playing basketball himself, said he saw his daughter was talented and ultimately asked for her to get called up. He said he thought it ultimately worked to her advantage.

“She may not have become the player she ended up becoming,” Todd Lewis said of his daughter, who averaged 14 points per game in seventh grade and led the team in scoring. She was also named AllLeague and Rookie of the Year. “I think playing in junior high would have been a waste of her time and a complete waste of her talent. Playing on varsity gave her confidence and she held her own.”

Keith Buehler, a middle school guidence couselor, head coach of the boys’ basketball team and asssistant on the football team, said he understands the reason for the change, but thinks it could hurt, too.

“I feel that the student-athlete should be able to play whatever level they are capable of playing, so I do not have a problem with seventhgraders playing varsity sports if they can physically handle it,” he said

“Nothing reinforces the integrity of a historic district like open space,” Reuter said. “In so many cases, I sort of have this joke about preventing the future — we’re protecting the past, we’re preventing the future. In this case, it’s really quite apt, except the future is our environmental health, and this is a huge triumph.”

Shopping crawl in PJ Village puts smiles on merchants’ faces

BY KEVIN REDDING KEVIN@TBRNEWSPAPERS.COM This past Saturday, May 13, a total of 19 businesses throughout the Port Jefferson Village, north of the Long Island Railroad tracks, participated in the second annual “Port Jefferson On Sale!” shopping crawl. Coinciding with Mother’s Day weekend, this year’s crawl was part of an ongoing initiative by the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce to help boost traffic for local retailers.

Participating stores, including The Amazing Olive, Sea Creations, Knitting Cove & Yarn Shop, Max & Millie, Pindar Wine, Crazy Fish Bar & Grill and Yogo Delish, offered 10 and 20 percent off sales and free items for customers.

The crawl started with a free cup of coffee at Starbucks and anybody who made three purchases at three different businesses in the village could bring their receipts to Tommy’s Place for a free drink. A “Spring Thing Raffle” offered $200 worth of local merchants’ gift certificates.

Although Saturday’s heavy rain kept many shoppers at home, chamber director of operations Barbara Ransome said it’s an initiative worth continuing.

“It’s one of those events you have to keep doing to gain momentum,” she said. “We want to get people out there and familiar with the stores. We’re actively involved to help promote the [businesses] because that’s important...we’re really working hard, I was out on Saturday with my umbrella handing out cards and going into businesses.”

Mary Joy Pipe, the owner of East End Shirt Company, offered customers who spent $75 at her store a free $20 hoodie.

“The chamber asked for our input as retailers as to what would help us,” Pipe said. “It encourages people to walk the village and experience new stores that maybe they’ve never gone into before. Being a retailer, you’ve got to keep trying and trying.”

Lyme disease awareness, prevention and treatment Your turn

There are so many features of our local environment to enjoy on Long Island, between the Pine Barrens, nature trails or the significant number of state parks and beaches scattered throughout our area.

However, as a natural reality of our enjoyment of these treasures, we also have to contend with tick-borne illness, incidents of which skyrocket during the summer months. The most common tick-borne infection in the United States is Lyme disease, which affects tens of thousands of Americans every year. Here in New York, in 2015, we had the third highest rate of Lyme disease contraction. As someone who has personally contractBY Lee ZeLdin ed this disease, I can tell you that it is a very serious matter that requires our attention.

We must do more to advance prevention and recovery efforts for Lyme disease, which can be fatal if left untreated.

May is Lyme disease awareness month, and as members of a community that has an above-average rate of contraction, we must each do our part to educate and minimize incidents of occurrence. Early indicators of Lyme disease include flulike symptoms, such as fever, muscle aches and fatigue, as well as rashes, which oftentimes may look like a bull’s-eye.

The key to prevention is tick check and removal, especially if you are out enjoying the summer in fields or tall grass.

Should you or a member of your family suspect that you may have contracted the disease, it is so important that medical assistance be sought as soon as possible.

I have been honored to be part of the effort to combat Lyme disease as your representative. In the last Congress, I co-sponsored and helped pass the 21st Century Cures Act. This new law accelerates the process for scientific advancement, gives researchers access to necessary resources and helps deliver lifesaving or life-improving cures and treatments to Americans suffering from a disease.

This critical piece of legislation provides $4.8 billion in new funding for the National Institutes of Health, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which conducts essential medical and public health research on illnesses such as Lyme. I was also a co-sponsor of the TickBorne Disease Research and Accountability and Transparency Act, which passed to further advance research on Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.

In addition, the recently enacted budget provides a $2 billion increase for National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which focuses its efforts on diseases like Lyme. This funding will allow researchers to continue their work in finding new cures and treatments for the most prevalent diseases affecting Americans. The budget also increases funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by $22 million. CDC conducts annual research on the effects of this disease, as well as preventative measures.

Locally, state Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) approved a package of bills that strengthen the state’s efforts to combat Lyme and tick-borne diseases. LaValle, a member of the Senate’s Task Force on Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases, helped secure $400,000 in the state budget for research, education and prevention efforts Long Island is home to one of the most beautiful and unique environments throughout the nation, and with this distinction comes the responsibility of ensuring our residents remain protected. This month, we must stay vigilant and prepare ourselves to deal with the spread of Lyme disease. We must all join together as a community to overcome this challenge.

Similarities between two past wartime presidents

It was at this moment 72 years ago that General Dwight Eisenhower flashed the victory sign to the free people of the world to signal the end of World War II against the Nazis in Europe. During the war, he was often criticized by other American generals as being too “pro-British,” or by the English as not having enough experience to run the war effort. But it was Eisenhower who was credited for seeing the big picture of the war effort to put aside the military differences of the British and Americans to achieve victory.

Some 152 years ago, General Ulysses S. Grant proudly watched his army completely defeat the Confederacy. Almost a year after President Abraham Lincoln made him the commanding general of all Union armies, he was at the cusp of a monumental victory. Grant was often criticized as a “butcher” who accepted extreme losses under his command, but he wrote a letter to Robert E. Lee expressing the need for his army to surrender. Grant told his adversary that all was lost and that peace must be restored to the divided nation. At Appomattox Court House, Grant offered Lee generous terms to prevent any further loss of life, to the surprise of the enemy. When northern artillery guns opened fire to celebrate the victory, Grant ordered them to stop because the Confederates were countrymen of the Union.

There are many similarities between Eisenhower and Grant. Both men were born in the Midwest — Eisenhower was from Kansas and Grant from Ohio. They both utilized West Point to leave a small town. Eisenhower was an outstanding football and baseball player. Grant was a superior horseman, who made one of the highest jumps ever recorded at the academy. They were both well-liked by their peers, as Eisenhower flashed a well-known grin and it was said at West Point, if you had a problem, Grant was seen as the fairest cadet to find a solution.

By the start of their respective wars, both men had not reached their professional goals. Grant earlier resigned his commission and he was later forced to work at his family store as a clerk in Galena, Illinois amid speculation about issues with alcohol. His first job for the Civil War was mustering soldiers into service for the Illinois government. Eisenhower always believed that he was cursed for not serving in France during World War I and he expected to retire as a colonel. But their senior officers and government officials found that these men could be counted on to carry out their military responsibilities.

These two officers were different politically than their commanders in chief. Grant voted as a Democrat before the war, but he openly wept at Lincoln’s funeral. Eisenhower was a Republican who did not support the New Deal. Perhaps due to the immense expectations that were placed on them, Eisenhower smoked five packs of cigarettes a day and Grant was believed to puff on thousands of cigars from 1861 to 1865.

Both men were known for their calm demeanors. During the Wilderness Campaign in 1864, Grant told his officers to stop thinking about the exploits of Lee and for them to create plans to hurt the southerners. At the height of Hitler’s failed attempt to overcome the Allies during the Battle of the Bulge, Eisenhower reorganized his armies and told his commanding generals that he expected to see only positive faces. He understood that the enemy had come out of their fortifications and they were now in the open where they could be destroyed.

At the end of the war, Grant was concerned that Lee would move his army into the Appalachian Mountains where his men would conduct guerilla operations. Eisenhower had no interest in attacking Berlin. He refused to take a city that would have to be partially given back to the Soviet Union. Instead, he pushed his army southeast towards Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the Alps. Like Grant, he did not want any German forces prolonging the war in the mountains. Eisenhower and Grant were both from regular backgrounds. They evolved into two epic military figures in American history, and they were only interested in successfully carrying out their duties for the nation.

Thumbs up for green zones We’re optimistic about the future of our local environment, especially when we discover elected officials are doing their part to create a greener Long Island.

Times Beacon Record was impressed to hear that at a May 9 meeting, the Huntington Town board members approved a resolution to explore the benefits of replacing gas-fueled landscaping equipment with battery-operated units at Heckscher Park and Huntington Town Hall. If the changes are implemented, the locations would be considered green zones, which means the areas are maintained with zero-emission lawn care equipment.

With assessments by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer showing that outdoor air pollution is carcinogenic to humans, any decrease in emissions in our air is a step in the right direction.

We also praise the Huntington residents who for months have been vocal about the town going green. Many cited gas-fueled equipment can contribute to hearing loss and asthma, and using the battery-operated equivalents in addition to decreasing emissions would also reduce noise.

The town will seek advice by retaining an American Green Zone Alliance study on Huntington’s existing landscaping practices, and after their findings, AGZA will recommend the appropriate equipment and provide instruction in use, care and maintenance for town employees.

We feel the partnership with a leader in a nationwide effort to help communities address noise and air pollution issues demonstrates the priority the town has given to protecting our environment.

We hope the prospect of green zones in Huntington will inspire other towns to follow suit. Residents also should be motivated by the program to use or request landscapers to use cordless electrical and manual equipment in place of gas-fueled units.

Every bit of change can help improve our environment, and with summer just around the corner, there’s no time like the present to start living greener.

The memories coloring can bring back My name is Marie Marchese.

I’m 77 years old, and I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to enter the adult coloring contest.

When I told my husband Frank, who is 79 years old, “I’m going to enter a coloring contest,” he said, “Why not.” He laughed and said, “You always like to color.”

Frank knew me when I was

four, and he was six years old.

We lived in the same project in Brooklyn. Frank used to watch me sit on a green bench my father made, and after school, I would color every day. My mother entered me in a Roy Rogers coloring contest, and I won a complete outfit — pants, jacket and cowboy hat.

As I got older, a lot has

changed but this contest brought back a beautiful memory. We will be married 59 years. We had a wonderful life and three children (one girl, two boys) and eight grandchildren.

Community member: re-elect village incumbents It is election time; the candidates are getting their petitions signed. The present Port Jefferson Village board members up for re-election this year, Mayor Margot Garant, Deputy Mayor Lawrence LaPointe and Trustee Stan Loucks, have shown a remarkable ability to tackle problems and come up with considered reasonable conclusions while keeping the public involved.

Their long-range planning efforts are starting to pay off especially in the uptown area. They remain persistent keeping after

our interests in serious matters seemingly beyond our control such as the repowering effort.

The obtaining of grant money (over $700,000 as stated in the Feb. 2 edition of the Port Times Record) cannot be understated in its impact to our village and our ability to get things done.

Under the direction of our experienced and dedicated Mayor Margot Garant we are living within our budgetary limits.

The 2016-17 budget allows for a bit of surplus, a portion of which will go to improving our infrastructure in 2017-18. This

large village obligation deserves all the attention it can gather.

The sidewalks downtown are a wonderful improvement. There are many significant improvements in our village over the last four years. Port Jefferson is a beautiful, vibrant and growing village, “truly a destination for a day or a lifetime.”

Let’s re-elect Mayor Margot Garant, Trustee and Deputy Mayor Lawrence LaPointe and Trustee Stan Loucks this June and keep the good work going!

T

he best way to get to know your kids, especially if they are teenagers, is to drive them and their friends, teammates and classmates. If your daughter texts you from school and asks, “Hey, Mom and/or Dad, can one of you drive three of my friends around?” don’t hesitate.

The answer, of course, can’t be what you might think. You can’t say, “Yes! Of course, that’d be great.”

You’ve got to play cool,

one whose clothing you washed for the 10th time this week and whose teeth are straightening because you brought her to the orthodontist for yet another visit. However, the rewards from just a tad more effort more than tip the scales in favor of the few extra miles.

The key to making this supersecret spy mission work is not to let them use their phones, to take routes where cell reception is poor or, somehow, to encourage conversation.

If they’re all sitting in the back seat, texting other people or showing each other pictures on one of the social networks, then the effort, time and assault on your nose aren’t worth it.

Seriously, anyone who has driven a group of teenagers around after a two-hour practice should keep a container of something that smells more tolerable nearby. When it’s too cold to stick my head out the window or when the smell becomes overwhelming, I have become a shallow mouth breather. But, again, if the conversation goes in the right direction, it’s worth it.

Put four or five or seven, if you can fit them, kids in a car, and you might get some high entertainment.

If you’re quiet enough, you might learn a few things about school or your kids.

“So, Sheila is so ridiculous,” Allison recently declared to my daughter. “She only talks about herself and her feelings. Have you ever noticed that? She turns every conversation into a story about herself. I mean, the other day, she was telling me about her brother, and her story about her brother isn’t nearly as interesting as my story.”

At that point, Allison then talked about her brother and herself for the next five minutes.

Tempted as I was to ask about the story Sheila told about her brother, so I could compare the stream of stories about Sheila’s brother to Allison’s, I knew better.

The boys also enter the realm of the car social laboratory experiment after a game or practice.

“Hey, what’d you think about the movie in French?”

Wait, they watched a movie in French? Again, you can’t ask any questions or everyone retreats to their phones or remembers that the car isn’t driving itself. You have to be inconspicuous or you will be relegated to the penalty box of listening to one-word answers from your suddenly sullen sports star.

“You did well in that presentation in English?”

A presentation? English? Quiet!

Quiet! You have to breathe normally and act like you’re giving all of your attention to the road.

Once the car empties and it’s just your son or daughter, you can ask specific questions. You might want to mix up some of the details, just so it doesn’t seem like you were listening carefully.

“So, you had a presentation in history?”

“No, Dad, that was in English,” your son will correct. Then he may share details that otherwise would never have made it past a stringent teenage filter.

Yet here is another story, closer to home and less violent, of insensitivity to customers. I was riding the Long Island Rail Road home from Penn Station on a weekday afternoon, expecting the usual change at Huntington for Port Jefferson, when an announcement over the public address system advised us that the connecting train was arriving across the tracks on the south side of the station. We were told to use the stairs to cross over if we wanted to continue east.

It seemed a bit of an inconvenience until we walked down the platform to the stairway and found the entrance blocked. Turning around to find the next closest stairway over the tracks, I saw that some of the passengers behind me were using walkers or canes. As they saw the locked gate to the stairs, they became frantic. The next crossover was a half block down the platform.

Did you ever witness people with walkers and canes trying to run?

The sight is pathetic. And the rest of us didn’t look too graceful, huffing and puffing our way to try and catch

the waiting train.

The stairs were steep to the top of the overpass, and the passages on the south side leading back down to the platform and to the parking lot were confusing. We ran by an elevator, and some of us pressed the button, but it took what seemed like forever to arrive.

Once inside, we were confronted with different buttons that were labeled, each with an ambiguous letter. We pushed the wrong button and wound up on the ground floor.

Breathless at this point, we rushed back up the stairs to the platform just in time to see the train pulling away. Those with the walkers and canes, as well as those of us too slow to navigate in time, perhaps a dozen in total, were left to wait the hour and a half until the next train.

The moans were loud.

There is, of course, pressure on the engineers and conductors to keep to a schedule. A regular report grades the on-time performance of the LIRR, and there is much disgruntlement when the trains are habitually late. So there was reason for the train to pull away before all the passengers had crossed

the tracks. But where was the caring?

Some of the passengers were lame.

Some were old. Some were just out of shape for a sudden dash up, around and down the granite stairways. It would have taken perhaps another two minutes for the rest of the group to reach the train.

Where was the respect for the paying customer?

Perhaps this sort of disregard is inevitable in a monopolistic situation. There is no other train line to use. There aren’t that many different airlines left in our country after the assorted mergers. Or is it something else, something having to do with our society as a whole? Yes, in many ways we have become more tolerant over the past century, more accepting of differences. We have also become more relaxed, less formal in our dealings with each other — and not in a negative way. But there are some aspects of previous generations that are sadly scarce. I could name a few: politeness, honor, civility, patience, respect. We rush around a lot, but I’m not sure we always get where we want to be. And if we don’t rush, we get left behind.

No respect on public transportation
