During American Stroke Month, May, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourage Long Island residents to join together to end the leading cause of death in New York.

Despite striking more than seven million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable.

According to the American Stroke Association,80percentofstrokesarepreventable.

Prevention is key. High blood pressure is the most common controllable cause of stroke. If you have it, you need to check it and keep it under control to help prevent a stroke. If you’ve had a stroke, you should ask your doctor for guidance on preventing a second one.

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefined high blood pressure as 130/80 mmHg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke.

Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access lifesaving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, teaches the acronym FAST to help people recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs: • F: face drooping — does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

• A: arm weakness — is one arm weak

American Stroke Association has tips for prevention during American Stroke Month. or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

• S: speech difficulty — is speech slurred, are they unable to speak or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly?

• T: time to call 911 — if the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately.

Port Jeff pediatrician, BOE candidate involved in billing suit

A request for comment sent to Kronberg’s defense attorney Christopher Fenlon was not returned, nor was a request sent to district Superintendent Paul Casciano.

According to Jay Worona, deputy executive director and general counsel of the New York State School Boards Association, an organization that provides support for school boards in the state, the settlement will have no impact on Kronberg’s bid for Port Jeff’s board. Worona said anyone qualified to vote is eligible to run for a board of education position in New York, with a felony conviction being the only disqualifier, adding that it will be up to the voters to decide.

“Providers serving Medicaid beneficiaries must be properly credentialed and thoroughly vetted to ensure that proper care is provided and to preserve the integrity of the Medicaid program, which serves our neediest citizens,” U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said in a statement. “Today’s settlement reflectsthisoffice’scommitmenttosafeguarding taxpayer programs like Medicaid by vigorously investigating allegations of fraud in False Claims Act cases.”

As part of the settlement, New York’s Medicaid program will receive $450,000 of the $750,000 payment, according to a press release on the matter from the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D).

A Port Jefferson School District Board of Education candidate, with his pediatrics practice partners, has made a settlement to resolve a legal issue pertaining to his day job.

The practice with several Long Island locations, including one in Port Jefferson, and its current and former partner physicians agreed to pay $750,000 to settle claims of improper Medicaid billing practices, according to an April 25 announcement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. One of the partners of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the practice named in the press release, is Dr. Jason Kronberg, a Port Jefferson resident running for one of the school district’s three board of education seats up for election May 15. The practice operates as a limited liability partnership under the name Freed, Kleinberg, Nussbaum, Festa & Kronberg M.D. The legal action was brought about by a whistleblower, and the case was pursued under the federal False Claims Act and the New York State False Claims Act jointly by federal and state investigators.

According to the release, the practice billed the Medicaid program, which provides health coverage to millions of Americans including eligible low-income adults, children, people with disabilities and others and is jointly funded by state and federal governments, for services provided by physicians who were not en-

rolled in the program. Between July 2004 and December 2010, the practice and its partners employed a number of physicians who were not enrolled in the Medicaid program yet still provided care to Medicaid patients, the government’s investigation revealed. The defendants sought reimbursement from Medicaid for services provided by non-Medicaid enrolled physicians and did so by misrepresenting the identities of the individuals actually providing the treatment, the release said.

“The settlement related to billing practices from over eight years ago, a period when, for the most part, I was just an employee of the practice,” Kronberg said in an email, adding that the settlement shouldn’t interfere with his school board candidacy. “The practice corrected the problem on our own in 2011, and we have had no issues since that point.

Given the extraordinarily complex nature of Medicaid billing rules, settlements like this are quite common — the government enters into thousands of them every year. We cooperated fully with the government investigation of this matter and we resolved the case with the government amicably.”

According to the complaint by the whistleblower’s attorneys accessed after Kronberg’s initial statement, he was a partner “at all relevant times herein.”

“I was a partner starting July 2009,” Kronberg said. “The complaint was 2005 to 2010. The statement said ‘for the most part’ — which is accurate.”

“I was asked to become a member of the school board to serve as a rational and non-biased voice in what has become a contentious environment,” he said in a personal statement. “I believe I will bring to the board a fiscally conservative yet socially liberal viewpoint.”

Senior community coming to Port Jefferson Station

Developer to get financial assistance from Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency

What is currently an open field on North Bicycle Path in Port Jefferson Station will soon be home for some.

A new 244-unit residential rental complex for senior citizens proposed for 27 acres of vacant land on the west side of North Bicycle Path, north of Comsewogue High School, has been greenlighted. The Brookhaven Town Industrial Development Agency announced in an April 26 press release it had approved an application for economic incentives with Benjamin Development Co., operating as The Vistas of Port Jefferson LLC, which will also be the name of the new community. The IDA is tasked with selecting projects that “promote the economic welfare and prosperity of the Town of Brookhaven by assisting in the acquisition, construction, reconstruction and equipping of commercial and industrial facilities.”

As part of the financial assistance agreement between the agency and developer, The Vistas of Port Jefferson will make payments in lieu of property taxes for 13 years, starting with a $52,000 installment in year one, jumping to about $90,000 in year four, and concluding with a $1,516,043 payment in the final year of the agreement. In total, the company will pay about $8 million in lieu of higher town property taxes during the 13-year agreement. The total cost of the project is expected to be about $65 million.

Lisa Mulligan, chief executive officer of the IDA, declined to comment on the agreement in a phone interview beyond what the agency offered in a press release, though she said the ball is in the court of attorneys on both sides to officially close the deal, which she said she fully expects to take place.

A request for comment to Benjamin Development Co. was not returned.

“As a result of IDA assistance for the development of this project, hundreds of new construction jobs will be added to the region,” the company’s application to the IDA stated.

“The project development will also benefit local/regional firms through purchases from suppliers, subcontractors, etc. Finally, the October report said the project will create new full-time jobs and 245-plus new residents that will assist in the stimulation of the local economy through daily household spending.”

The project is expected to create more than 400 new construction jobs as well as 24 new permanent positions, according to the IDA press release. The Vistas of Port Jefferson will offer 64 two-bedroom townhouses, 36 onebedroom units, 144 two-bedroom apartments with a clubhouse and a sewage-pumping facility. Construction is expected to take about two years. The facility is billed as a community for tenants age 55 and up.

Fifteen percent of the units will be designated as affordable housing, available to prospective tenants earning less than 80 percent of the area’s median income, which was about $90,000 per household from 2012 to 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station) said in an emailed statement through Carolyn Fellrath, legislative secretary, the town IDA is a separate entity from the board and does not seek input from councilmembers in making decisions.

“This proposed project has generated concern in the community,” Cartright said.

“The rezoning of this parcel in 2010 predates my tenure. However, based on the community concerns raised to my office, I am not sure the decision to rezone this parcel to [a] Planned Retirement Community would be granted if this application were before this town board today.”

Incidents and arrests April 24–30 Stolen property

A 54-year-old man from Port Jefferson allegedly stole a laptop, a Stag Arms brand assault rifle and a bag of coins from a home on Earle Street in Central Islip between April 15 and April 20, according to police. He was arrested April 25 in Port Jefferson and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Shoplifting

At Staples on Nesconset Highway in Terryville March 7 at about 12:30 p.m., a 46-year-old man from Selden allegedly stole headphones, a modem and a router, according to police. He was arrested April 29 in Selden and charged with petit larceny.

Shots fired

On April 28 at about 4 a.m., a 43-year-old man from Selden allegedly fired multiple rounds into the air from a Beretta handgun outside of the rear of his home with other people in the home and in a “densely populated residential area,” according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and prohibited use of a weapon.

Crime spree

A 34-year-old man from Selden was driving a 2005 Ford on South Bicycle Path near the intersection of Manhasset Avenue in Selden at about 8:30 p.m. April 28 when he was allegedly involved in a crash with three parked cars, fled from police in his vehicle, then on foot, and was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and a drug, according to police. He was arrested and charged with first-degree operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Possession of assault rifle

At Budget Buy & Sell on East Main Street in Patchogue June 6, 2017, at about 2 p.m., a 22-year-old man from Mount Sinai allegedly possessed an assault rifle, according to police. He was arrested April 25 in Selden and charged with thirddegree criminal possession of an assault rifle.

Missing cash

On April 25, a 58-year-old man from West Islip allegedly withdrew cash from his account at Teachers Federal Credit Union on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge and used the cash, despite being told by the bank it was placed in his account mistakenly and being asked to rectify the situation, according to police. He was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.

Stealing from Lowe’s

A 58-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole a Bluetooth speaker and rechargeable lithium battery from Lowe’s Home Improvement on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook April 30 at about noon, according to police.

Phone stolen

An iPhone 7 was stolen from Marshalls on Route 25A in Miller Place April 29 at about 5:30 p.m., according to police.

Dunkin’ break-in

The drive through window of Dunkin’ Donuts on Nesconset Highway in Setauket was broken with a rock at about 5 a.m.

April 29 and cash was stolen from within, according to police.

Stolen pocketbook

At Panera Bread on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station April 29 at about 12:30 p.m., a customer left a pocketbook containing a wallet with cash and credit cards on a table while she went to use the restroom, and it was stolen while she was gone, according to police.

Car damaged

At CVS Pharmacy on Route 25A in Setauket April 29 at about 2:30 p.m., someone approached a 2010 Toyota and struck the side with an unknown object then fled, according to police.

Cash missing

At Maeder Landscape & Snow Plow on West Parsons Court in Setauket April 24 at about 8 a.m., an employee of the business saw two other workers in her 2004 Dodge and later discovered cash was missing, according to police.

Bar fight

Two people were involved in a fight at The Bench on North Country Road in Stony Brook April 27 at about 2:30 a.m., with a suspect punching a victim in the face, who then had to be transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries, according to police.

Art supplies stolen

At Michael’s on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook April 27 at about 5:30 p.m., someone stole a set of fine art paints, according to police.

Walmart shoplifting

Two tote bags and 50 containers of baby formula were stolen from Walmart on Nesconset Highway in Setauket April 27 at about 11 am., according to police.

Essential tips for safe paddleboating this summer

BY HERB HERMAN There is something special about being in a paddleboat quietly gliding along in the water without disturbing wildlife and taking the opportunity to think about nature.

Additionally, paddling represents a great opportunity to exercise the arms and the upper body. However, all of this growth in paddle sports has a dark side. Unlike with power boats, the number of paddlecraft fatalities has gone up. In 2015, 29 percent of boating deaths were paddle craft related. In 2016, fatalities climbed even higher. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Strategic Plan for 2018 focuses efforts on addressing the problem by extending information to the paddlecraft community.

Additionally, the USCG has generated a paddlecraft vessel safety check, which is administered by a USCG approved vessel examiner, such as Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel.

The problem with paddleboat safety starts at the retailer from which the craft are purchased. In sales of power and sailboats, a safety package is commonly included with a new boat purchase, and there are, more likely than not, state boating regulations requiring boaters to take state sanctioned courses. This is certainly true of New York State. This has led to more knowledgeable boaters on the water.

In the case of paddleboating, craft can be purchased online or at big box stores where little or no concern is given to handling and safety on the water.

“Safety equipment offered for sale may be generic rather than specific to location, and the sales personnel may or may not be knowledgeable about local needs,” said Don Goff, the national commodore’s senior adviser for paddlecraft. “Many retailers do not have safety equipment specific to paddlers, including distress flags, floatable marine radios, personal locator beacons and deck lines.”

Paddlecraft boating is especially dangerous in a crowded mooring field, where all sorts of craft are maneuvering, and the paddle boater can be surprised by a power boat leaving or seeking a mooring. This problem can also occur in areas that are popular for anchoring.

Channels used by ferries can present special challenges for paddlers, due to the limitations in maneuverability of large craft. It should

be remembered by paddlers and small boat operators generally that sailboats underway have limitations in their ability to maneuver and this can lead to collisions. Small fishing boats are frequently overloaded and positioned in the vicinity of harbor entrances and channels, where there is considerable boating traffic. Dangers exist for such boats to be overwhelmed by passing power boats. Of course, all small craft are particularly vulnerable to changeable weather conditions, and just as any boater should, one must exercise extreme caution if bad weather conditions develop.

To alleviate many problems faced in small craft, users should at least wear personal flotation devices and have a sound-producing device, such as a whistle. Among other requirements, each paddler 13 years of age or older must have a USCG-approved Type I, II, III, or appropriate Type V personal flotation device. It doesn’t have to be worn, although that’s certainly the wisest plan and one that is strongly recommended. A child 12 years old or younger must wear a USCG-approved personal flotation device. The jacket must be in “serviceable condition,” without rips, tears or deterioration that will diminish its performance. A Type V jacket can be used as long as it’s USCG-approved and applicable for the activity. Belt pouch-type inflatable personal flotation devices, must be worn on the person to meet the life jacket regulation.

Those on the water after sunset need to have a flashlight, or similar lighting device, to warn other boaters. As the operator of a vessel, you need to follow the navigation rules.

Boaters are also required to report any boating accident or injury to the local reporting authority, either the USCG or other agency that has been delegated that authority.

Above all, when you’re on the water in any kind of craft, be alert and exercise awareness of your environment. Boating can be a highly pleasurable activity when common sense is adhered to.

State Legislature to vote on ban of plastic bags

Environmental advocacy group’s survey shows a decrease in plastic bag use after 5-cent fee Though there are still people in Suffolk County who regularly kick themselves for forgetting to bring their bags into stores, a newly released survey says the law that enforces a 5-cent per bag fee has so far been effective.

“And this is only in three months since the law passed,” Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, said to the Suffolk County Legislature Health Committee April 19. “This is a great success. Public behavior is changing.”

In November and December of last year, her environmental advocacy group conducted a study that showed 70 percent of 20,000 Suffolk County shoppers surveyed left a store with a plastic, nonreusable bag in tow. Only 6 percent of customers surveyed used a reusable bag.

After a new survey of 6,000 people this month in 20 grocery stores throughout the county, just 30 percent of those surveyed purchased plastic bags and 43 percent were now carrying reusable ones; 21 percent of people shopping in those grocery stores decided not to take a bag.

“As we celebrate Earth Day it’s great to have news that the bag fee is effective, said Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport). “I know that there were concerns with adopting the bag law, but to see real, tangible results in such a short period of time, I think it’s very exciting.”

Ocean plastics have become a concern to a number of environmental scientists and advocacy groups, and Esposito said the next goal is to see if there’s a way to reduce the use of other sources, like straws and utensils.

“Plastic is becoming a real threat to the environment,” she said.

Rebecca Grella, a research scientist and teacher at Brentwood schools, surveyed Flax Pond Marine Laboratory in Old Field last October and said the amount of plasticsfound in the pond’s water was troubling.

“At Flax Pond in 1 square meter [were] 17 grams of microplastics, which are plastics under 5 millimeters [large],” Grella said. “In the entire shoreline of Flax Pond — over a

mile of shoreline — we extrapolated there is about 400 pounds of plastic.”

The microplastics are from larger pieces that have eroded along the sea floor until they are smaller in size. They are often ingested by sea life, which not only endangers aquatic creatures but any creature which eats them, including people.

Spencer said that while a total ban on bags would have been more efficient, there was no way to get it passed by the Legislature.

“I think in order to get to this point after years of negotiation, the nickel offered a successful compromise,” Spencer said. “I think the law has worked so well because people don’t want their nickels going to the store.”

“By charging people 5 cents there seems to be a lot of people getting angry and agitated,” Grella said.

Despite successes, Esposito admitted there is a chance to eventually see an increase in purchased bags as people get used to the law.

“We do get concerned about people getting used to the nickel and just paying it,” she said.

“Rhat’s why we keep up public education.”

Citizens Campaign for the Environment is planning a survey in November and December to gather a much larger sample size, surveying more than just grocery stores.

At the state level, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced a bill to ban single-use plastic bags across the state April 23, which would begin in January 2019 if passed. The threepage bill, introduced by the governor a day after Earth Day, comes a little more than a year after he blocked a 5-cent surcharge that New York City had sought to place on plastic bags.

Cuomo described the measure as an effort to counteract the “blight of plastic bags” that is taking “a devastating toll on our streets, our water and our natural resources,” he said in a statement.

Seeking re-election for a third term in the fall, Cuomo then quoted an adage: “We did not inherit the Earth, we are merely borrowing it from our children.”

If the bill were to pass, New York would join California, which approved a statewide ban of plastic bags in 2016. Hawaii has a de facto ban on plastic bags; all of its counties have instituted bans.

But the measure faces an uncertain path in the Legislature, where leaders of the Assembly and the Senate had opposed the city’s bill. The measure would very likely face a stiffer challenge in the Republicanmajority Senate.

Under Cuomo’s proposal, a variety of bags would be exempt from the ban, including those that contain raw meat, fish or poultry; bags sold in bulk; those used in bulk packages of fruit and dried goods; those used for deli products; newspaper bags; trash, food storage and garment bags; and takeout food bags. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation would also be allowed to exempt certain bags through regulations.

The news comes after advocates from across the state gathered the same day in Albany to hold Cuomo accountable for meeting his climate and clean energy commitments.

“Today, New Yorkers delivered a message to Governor Cuomo: Walk the talk on climate action; follow through on your words, because lasting change only happens through action and putting goals into law,” said Peter Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates of New York. “New York has a remarkable opportunity to be an international leader on climate if, and only if, we embrace a future powered by renewables. The people of the state will continue to remind Governor Cuomo of this opportunity until he takes advantage of it.”

Behind the sticks of Richie Lacalandra and Chris Wolfe, Comsewogue powered past Half Hollow Hills West 13-7 April 27 despite a third-quarter scare.

The pair combined for eight goals and five assists, with Wolfe helping the Warriors regain the advantage by scoring his hat trick and fourth scores on feeds from junior T.J. Heyder (one goal, three assists) after Hills West tallied three unanswered goals to close the gap 7-6 in the third.

Lacalandra received an assist from Heyder and a pass from senior Sean Power in the fourth for his third and fourth goals of the game. “[When they closed within two] we had to tighten up our defense — the offense was stalling a little bit so we had to work the ball around and attack the short [stick offensive players],” said Wolfe, a junior.

“We knew they were missing one of their better defenders too, so we had to attack the weaker poles and try to get men open when we drew double [coverage].”

The Warriors’ defense had shut the door on the Colts before the flurry, holding them to three goals in the first half.

“They were everything we thought they would be — they have great shooters, great plays,” Heller said. “We watched film, saw the passing lanes, we kept our sticks up, knocked down a lot of passes and as a team

our performance was outstanding.”

Lacalandra (four goals, four assists) said a well-timed break in the action helped his team regain its composure.

“When they closed [within] two goals coach called timeout and told us we have to pick up the intensity; they’re getting close,” the senior said. “Our offense picked it up — we began to click and we put in

three or four right away.”

Power and Heyder scored goals in the final minutes. Junior Sean Kennedy finished with two goals and two assists.

With the win the Warriors improve to 8-2 in Division II behind No. 2 Mount Sinai and undefeated Islip.

With four games left in the regular season, Stony Brook University-bound Lacalandra said his team’s strategy to prepare for the postseason is simple.

“We want to win out,” he said. “We want the top seed, so if we can win out we’ll be in good shape.”

Mitchell, although pleased with his team’s performance on the night, said his Warriors will have their hands full, and it’ll take a total team effort as the temperature begins to rise. Comsewogue hosted BayportBlue Point (7-3) May 2, but results were not available by press time. The Warriors travel to Eastport-South Manor (5-5) May 5 for a 6:30 p.m. matchup. Comsewogue will close out the season with a home game against Sayville, May 9, and an away game at Mount Sinai, May 11.

“Richie Lacalandra is very dangerous, so they paid a lot of attention to him, but so long as our other guys — Sean Power, Anthony Passarella, Chris Wolfe and Nick Donnelly — are producing, we’re a little more well-rounded,” the coach said. “We have four games left and they’re all against very strong opponents, so we’ll need to stay in shape, stay focused, eliminate mistakes.

It’s going to get hotter, so we’ve got to play more people, so the guys who haven’t been getting the runs, we’re going to need ‘em, so they’ve got to be ready.”

Royal grappler Joey Collins named inspirational wrestler Port Jefferson senior Joey Collins was named the Rohan Murphy Inspirational Wrestler of the Year at the Suffolk County Coaches Association awards ceremony April 18.

“Salute,” Murphy wrote on Twitter with the announcement. The award is presented to Suffolk County wrestlers that battle through adversity during high school.

“I love being a part of a team,” said Collins, a four-year varsity player who was diagnosed with Down syndrome, earlier this year. “It’s exciting. I work hard and do something for me that betters myself.”

Although head coach Mike Maletta said at first having Collins on the team presented a set of unique challenges, he and the wrestlers warmed up to their fellow Royal.

“The first year it was a handful,” he said.

“I tried to think of how I was going to work with guys that were focused on winning state titles, but by his second year he got better at being in practice. He was able to stay on task longer, and I treated him like every other kid.

We try to raise expectations and he wrestled some good matches. Joey goes out there and he wrestles hard no matter what.”

Collins was honored earlier this year by the Port Jefferson board of education, along

Maletta and Jesse Meaney were recognized as League Coaches of the Year. Miceli was recognized for being a 126-pound state finalist, finishing the

2017-18 season with a 38-3 record.

Joey Collins said he enjoyed the bonds made between teammates, something he said he learned from Maletta.

“He taught me how to become a better wrestler,” Collins said. “He taught me how to train and how to work hard. I love to cheer my team on. I love getting involved with the sport. I love being a wrestler.”

Miller Place parents and students at a board of education meeting on school security earlier this year.

School budget votes count As we sit crunching numbers for 2018-19 proposed school budgets, we can’t help but wonder how many parents and taxpayers are paying attention. We already know the answer — not enough.

School taxes make up more than 60 percent of the average homeowner’s property taxes in Suffolk County, according to a 2017 analysis done by ATTOM Data Solutions, a real-estate information firm. Despite this fact, voter turnout for school budgets remains dreadfully low year after year.

In May 2017, the ballots cast by a mere 412 people determined how Port Jefferson School District would spend its more than $43 million to educate about 1,000 enrolled students. Now, its taxpayers face coming to terms with a settlement of Long Island Power Authority’s lawsuit over the tax assessment of the power plant and what it might mean for their wallets.

To cast an educated vote May 15 on your district’s proposed 201819 school budget is a test of every Long Island taxpayer. There’s a little more than a week left, so start studying.

Ever since the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting Feb. 14, this year has been marked by tense debates between students, parents and school administrators over school safety. On March 14, Rocky Point High School students participated in the National School Walkout despite knowing they would face in-school suspension. These students brought their dissention to the board of education trustees. Elections for these vital positions are held annually during the budget vote.

Unfortunately, only 909 people in Rocky Point voted in 2017 on who would be determining if the students’ punishment was fair.

The most direct way to make changes in a school district’s policy is to vote and become involved. The elected trustees on a board of education participate in the lowest form of government, smaller than the town or county government, but that shouldn’t reflect on the importance of the job. By running and winning a seat on the board, one can propose changes to a school district’s security measures or educational policies.

This civic involvement is vital to bringing about change.

Yet all too often board of education races have little to no contest.

The board of education trustee races tend to have even fewer ballots cast than the annual budget.

If Long Islanders want to be a force of change behind the factors creating high property taxes and have a say on poignant issues like school security, get out and vote. Ask questions of your board of education candidates to find out where they stand. Attend budget presentations to see exactly how your tax dollars are being spent. The polls will be open Tuesday, May 15. Take five minutes while dropping off or picking up your child from school to cast your ballot. It can make a difference in their education, and then you too can say you’ve done your homework.

Vote Zamek, Biedenkapp and Kronberg I am writing to respectfully urge my fellow Port Jefferson and Belle Terre neighbors to join me in electing Tracy Zamek, Ryan Biedenkapp and Dr. Jason Kronberg to the Port Jefferson School District board of education.

I had the pleasure of attending our district’s meetthe-candidates night. From the onset, it was evident Zamek, Biedenkapp and Kronberg have been and continue to be deeply focused on the betterment and positive direction of our schools and village.

Many of the residents I spoke with that evening were extremely impressed by their

longtime, active experience in the areas of volunteer service and shared community initiatives. From helping to raise funds for educational grants to assisting special needs children organizations, it was exceedingly clear to all in attendance that Zamek, Biedenkapp and Kronberg are devoted parents who have spent countless hours dedicating their personal time supporting others. Moreover, their responses to a myriad of instructional and school finance questions were intelligent, realistic and responsible.

Throughout the evening, Zamek, Biedenkapp and Kronberg consistently echoed

their collective commitment to the education, safety and celebration of our children. Each of them confidently conveyed a collaborative leadership tone and promise that gives our school district and community its best chance to address the very real challenges ahead.

An inspiring blend of dedicated service coupled with a wellrespected balance of pragmatism and integrity — that is what makes Zamek, Biedenkapp and Kronberg the clear choices for Port Jefferson school board.

Why I’m voting for Biedenkapp for BOE I am writing today to strongly endorse Ryan Biedenkapp as a future member of the Port Jefferson School District board of education. Biedenkapp is running this year to help facilitate the fiscal well-being of our school district as well as represent the many voices of our community members. I am a 20-year veteran teacher in a nearby school district, but more importantly I am a lifelong resident of Port Jefferson.

I attended Port Jeff schools from prekindergarten through graduation and am a proud alumna of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

Biedenkapp is a highly educated, insightful man. His background in the field of occupational therapy provides him with the knowledge base necessary to address specialized services that students may require. Biedenkapp has spent the last 18 years in

medical sales and holds a master’s degree in business administration from Northwest Christian University. He has three children in our school district who are very different and vary in needs. His eldest is a high school honor student who is active in sports and has varied outside interests.

His twin boys excel in the middle school in both academics and sports. Biedenkapp is an amazing father to his three children, one of whom is on the autism spectrum.

He has been a proponent of autism awareness and raised thousands of dollars for the cause. He has assisted in creating programs and curriculum aimed at helping students understand the unique gifts their peers with autism bring to our community. Biedenkapp’s involvement with children and curriculum are exemplary. In this time of uncertainty within our district, there are many issues that

are very important to us all as parents, taxpayers and community members. I do not believe there is a more qualified candidate for our school board. We are in need of members who are not only fiscally responsible but who are educated in finance as well. I believe Biedenkapp’s education and experience in the workforce truly speaks for itself. He has a deep understanding of a variety of educational and business programs.

Please join me in support of Ryan Biedenkapp as our future board member. His skill set, education, life and work experience will prove to be invaluable assets as our school community navigates these challenging times. He can and will help make a difference for our community.

For example, Zamek has always found the time to be

present and heard from whenever there is an opportunity to interact with state education leaders or our legislative representatives. Top 10 speech mistakes to avoid

his is the season for speeches.

We’re about to enter the graduation and wedding time of year, when principals, best men, maids of honor and valedictorians stand in front of a group of people and share their thoughts during these momentous occasions.

For those about to grab the microphone, I’d like to offer my top 10 list of things not to do in a speech — in reverse order.

10. Don’t make inside jokes that no one, outside of your best friend

By Daniel Dunaief and maybe your sibling, understands. Looking at your friend after you’ve made a joke that no one gets and pointing back and forth between this other person and you only endangers that friendship.

9. Don’t make a speech without practicing. Find someone who can be helpful and not someone who thinks you shouldn’t change anything you do, ever. That honest person might prevent you from saying, “The groom is so lucky. He gets to sleep with Karen — I always wanted to sleep with Karen. I can’t wait to hear about it.”

8. Don’t correct yourself on small details, such as, “Remember when we had that school snowball fight in second grade? No, wait it was first grade, right? No, no, it was second grade. I was right the first time.”

Most people won’t care about those details. They’d rather you got it wrong than hear you go play a one person game of memory ping-pong.

7. Don’t forget to thank everyone you should thank. You can acknowledge your friends for helping you get through those tough years, the writers of your favorite movies for giving you a chance to laugh, and the woman at the supermarket for encouraging you to submit an application that got

you into a summer program. Never forget to thank your parents, any relatives who are in attendance and the teachers who somehow managed to educate you despite your insistence that their subject was irrelevant.

6. Don’t imagine that alcohol makes you a better singer. It doesn’t.

Besides, there’s always an enormous collection of cellphones at any wedding. You can’t erase that horrible rendition of “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” Ever. Strangers will come up to you and screech at you.

5. Don’t quote someone else extensively. Winston Churchill was a tremendous speechmaker, JFK said some memorable things, too, as did Martin Luther King Jr. Audiences can read and have no desire to hear you butcher an extensive collection of words someone else delivered.

4. Don’t try to sell something.

You’re there to support the graduate, the bride and groom and numerous families. This isn’t the time to suggest that people moved by your speech can pick up tissues at your store

because you sell the softest tissues in town.

3. Don’t talk about how difficult it is for you to give a speech. Chances are the audience supports you anyway, so there is no need to tell them, over and over again. If you aren’t particularly good at public speaking, they’ll notice.

2. Don’t look down at your poorly written notes during the entire speech. If you look up once in a while, you won’t sound like you’re muttering anecdotes and advice in your sleep.

1. Don’t give a long speech. The most important part of any speech is to keep it short. Sure, you might be funny and have some words of wisdom that people will remember.

And, yes, you might recall an anecdote that sheds light on the people in your class. People want to eat dessert, go to a party, or throw their ridiculous square hats with tassels into the air for the annual picture of stupid hats in the air. A good rule of thumb for speeches: When in doubt, leave it out.

The invisible hand of China behind the current Korean dance

or those of us who remember the savage Korean War (195053) and the various attempts at a peace treaty over the years, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un’s pirouette from warmonger to statesman is astonishing. All of us remember the test missiles that were fired from North Korea, some over Japan, into the sea as recently as last year.

We also remember the bellicose rhetoric about being able to

What happened?

First there was President Donald Trump’s equally bellicose rhetoric, some of it personally aimed at North Korea’s leader, referred to as “Little Rocket Man.” Trump was severely

criticized at the time for sounding like a schoolyard bully rather than a diplomatic leader. The world watched in horror, wondering if we were on the edge of nuclear war.

All the while North Korea’s ongoing tests were apparently successful.

Probably the most concerned was South Korea’s new leader, Moon Jae-in.

Next came the Winter Olympics serendipitously and President Moon’s invitation to the North Koreans to participate under one flag. This too was unprecedented. Kim accepted and perhaps more tellingly sent his sister as his representative. She seems to be one family member he trusts. We all witnessed the diplomatic success at the Olympics.

In retrospect, something seems to have changed after that. Was it a new perspective for the two Koreas as a result of the games? Or did it have some connection to the subsequent visit Kim made to China in the middle of one night? I believe that was Kim’s first trip out of his country, and of course it is significant that he chose to visit Premier Xi Jinping. Was Kim invited or did he

request the meeting? What advice was he given by the powerful Chinese leader, who seems to have established a rapport with Trump? What will the Chinese, with their long-term view, want to happen now?

At this point, Kim has been counseled, Moon has been galvanized and the tenor of the Korean debate begins to shift. Kim invites Trump to meet with him, and over the objections of our diplomats, Trump immediately accepts. There is no doubt that Trump is partially responsible for this shift.

The two Korean leaders then enter into a diplomatic choreography with lots of positive dialogue that plays well for the people of both Koreas, and the rest of the world for that matter, who want peace. In war, it is humankind that suffers terribly, and the people can only hope and pray for their leaders to keep the peace.

So what does North Korea want, as far as we can tell? Certainly Kim wants to stay in power as the No. 1 priority. So far his most visible achievement is his development of nuclear missiles. He also professes to want an improved economy. In fact,

The South wants to eliminate the threat of nuclear war and confrontation. And perhaps it wishes to invest in the economic recovery of the North, where there will be money to be made. The Chinese would like to see the United States leave the Korean Peninsula. I would be keenly interested in what else China expert Henry Kissinger thinks the Chinese want. Undoubtedly the South would also like to see us go if peace is somehow assured. There are some 30,000 American troops still stationed in South Korea.

And what would we like? We would first like the removal of nuclear weapons from North Korea and finally a formal peace treaty ending the 65-year conflict.

Those goals have seemed irreconcilable until now but perhaps what we will get is a prolonged peace.
