The former CEO of Lawrence Aviation in Port Jefferson, Gerald Cohen, has been ordered to pay $48 million in cleanup costs for the toxic underground plume caused by materials leached into the ground from the now-defunct airplane parts manufacturer.

The U.S. Attorney’s office announced the charges April 15 after a district court judge in Central Islip ruled Lawrence Aviation Industries, Inc, a former defense contractor that was based on Sheep Pasture Road, and its longtime owner and CEO, Gerald Cohen, were liable for environmental cleanup costs.

“This case and the significant monetary penalties imposed by the court should serve as a warning to would-be polluters, including individuals, that this office and the [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] will use every tool at their disposal to protect Long Island’s groundwater and to ensure that those responsible for contamination will foot the bill for cleanup costs,” said Richard Donoghue, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

The U.S. Attorney’s office detailed Cohen’s wrongdoing based on the court’s 37page memorandum. In the early 1980s, after the Suffolk County Department of Health issued a series of recommendations for LAI to come into compliance with various pollution control laws, LAI used a front-end loader to crush 55-gallon drums containing hazardous substances, among more than 1,600 of such drums identified on the property, resulting in a massive discharge of waste directly onto the ground. Samples taken from those drums revealed impermissibly high levels of trichloroethylene, among other pollutants. Nearly two decades later, in 1999, testing performed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation revealed contamination of groundwater and surface water at the site.

In a statement to the U.S. Attorney’s office, the regional EPA administrator said he was pleased with the court’s decision.

“This judgment provides for the reimbursement of money spent on cleanup work and imposes penalties that act as a deterrent,” said EPA regional administrator Pete Lopez. “Our active engagement and work at this site will continue over the long term.”

Various creditors have asserted claims against LAI and Cohen properties based on their respective liens. Those claims remain pending before the court. The 126-acre property was named a Superfund site in 2000 and was expected to take 20 years to complete the cleanup.

The EPA’s cleanup of the site, now into its 19th year, has included a remedial investigation into the nature and scope of the contamination, various hazardous waste removal and stabilization activities, and the implementation and maintenance of two groundwater treatment systems designed to capture and treat contaminated groundwater, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. The EPA’s activities at the LAI site have resulted in a decrease in the size of the groundwater TCE plume and the removal of more than 18,000 tons of soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, among other hazardous substances, including asbestos-containing materials.

In 2008, Cohen and LAI pleaded guilty to violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, for storing hazardous wastes at the LAI facility without a permit issued by the EPA or New York State. Cohen was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of one year and a day, and supervised release of 36 months. He and LAI were ordered to pay restitution to the EPA of $105,816.

Port Jeff and Belle Terre plan for controlled hunt/deer culling

It’s a sentiment shared by several federal employees working in multiple environmental departments. At a presentation held in the Port Jefferson Village Center April 11, Thomas Rawinski, who works for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, said deer eat the saplings that would create new trees. They eat the bushes and flowers that would bring insects to the forests. And since they have no natural predators on Long Island, they multiply at an alarming rate.

“If your land is healthy, you can sit back and rest on your laurels,” Rawinski said. “If it’s not, like every damn forest on Long Island, then somebody has work to do, including me.”

Crowded into the Port Jefferson Village Center, residents of both the Village of Port Jefferson and Village of Belle Terre spoke about their own experiences with deer, but it all begs the question: What are the local villages going to do?

The villages of Belle Terre and Port Jefferson have been working out the details on some sort of organized deer hunt, either a coordinated hunt or deer culling, one that could likely happen at the Port Jefferson golf course.

“It’s either going to be a controlled hunt or it’s going to be a cull,” Port Jeff Mayor Margot Garant said. “I don’t know which way we’re going to go but we’re going to figure it out.”

Talks have been ongoing since January, where both Garant and Belle Terre Mayor Bob Sandak have expressed their intent to split the cost of a deer culling, which would likely be performed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This would involve a specialized team of hunters using thermal imaging and silenced rifles to kill deer from elevated positions at night.

The cost could be expensive, with some estimates as high as $1,000 per deer.

Thomas DeSisto, a wildlife specialist with the USDA said the operation is mandated to charge for their services, as they get all their funding through cooperative service agreements. While the cost hasn’t deterred the mayors from finding a solution, DeSisto said there are issues with performing a culling on Long Island due to regulation by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

In 2017, new legislation has restricted hunting to the point that DeSisto said fundamentally restricts the culling process. In Suffolk County, hunting is restricted to bows, or to muzzle-loaded rifles during the January hunting season. In addition, hunters are not allowed to keep loaded firearms within vehicles, use of bait is not allowed within 300 feet of a roadway, and hunters are not allowed to discharge firearms from the road.

“We’ve seen about 50 percent decrease in efficiency in our upstate program, and on Long

Island we’ve seen a 75 percent decrease in efficiency,” he said. “I can tell you the level of deer damage on the east end is the worst I’ve seen in New York.”

In January, Belle Terre changed its village code to allow hunting within the premises, saying they had received an opinion by the state attorney general who said that no municipality other than New York State could regulate hunting.

While some village members shared fears of hunting going on so close to their homes, and shared a general distaste for killing animals, Sandak said so far, the change in code, and the facilitating of hunters, has been a success. He estimates since the village allowed hunting approximately 100 deer have been killed.

“Five years ago, if you were in your car and you saw a deer, you took out your phone and took a picture of it, because it was an oddity,” Sandak said. “Now, it’s unbelievable.”

The New York State DEC allows residents to apply for Deer Damage Permits, which allow property owners to hunt or allow hunters outside of the normal season. The Belle Terre mayor said to his knowledge there are three residents in Belle Terre with DDPs. Port Jefferson currently has code on the books that says discharging any kind of firearm, bow or crossbow is strictly prohibited. Garant said village officials are still looking at changing the code so it will allow hunting, conforming to what the state attorney general has said. However, she added the village could not and would not go after residents who break the code and allow hunting on their own property.

Sue Booth Binczik, wildlife biologist with the New York Department of Wildlife Conservation, spoke to those who attended the meeting, echoing Rawinski by saying deer lead to reduced diversity, more invasive plants and fewer canopy and trees.

Deer are perhaps the most efficient devastators of the local ecology. For one, they have prolific breeding patterns. Binczik said does can start to breed at 1 year old and can give birth to two fawns per year in May and June.

While deer are naturally prey animals, Long Island shows a distinct lack of natural predators to cull their numbers. An average deer can live to be 20, and while vehicles and hunters may start to pick off the occasional deer, stags can mate with any number of females, ever increasing the population. The only things left to kill the deer are recreational hunters, starvation, but especially moving vehicles.

“Under ideal conditions the deer populations can double every two to three years,” she said.

“The reason they have this high reproductive rate is because they’re a prey species.”

State DEC regulations require that hunters only use a bow and arrow and only during the hunting season, barring a DDP permit. Hunters must also shoot 150 feet away from any structures with a bow, and of course they are

not allowed to trespass onto other residents’ property without permission.

Binczik said there are means to get a community involved by completing a “controlled hunt,” which would require each individual homeowner to give permission for the village to hunt on their property. Those participating community members would come together to decide on a set of rules for any hunters participating, including the qualifications of the hunters and the times the hunters would be allowed out.

“There have been communities in upstate New York that have been running for controlled hunts for decades, and they have been very happy with it,” she said.

Despite all these efforts, Rawinski remains skeptical. He said it comes from years of seeing the damage that deer have caused to the local wildlife. People, he said, have to wake up to it.

While by the roadside it may seem the forests are blooming with green, but it’s a symptom of what he called the “great green lie,” that while it may seem the forests are lush, on the ground, there’s not much left.

“It’s hard to come by solutions, especially in this suburban situation,” he said. “Humans have a can-do attitude, but I have to tell you, we’re up against our match. I don’t hate deer. I hate what people have let them do to the ecosystem.”

Local businesses react to new county plastics ban

Come January next year, Suffolk residents will likely be slurping down their iced coffees using paper straws, instead of the usual plastic.

As Suffolk lawmakers passed bills aimed at reducing plastic and polystyrene waste in the county April 9, food business owners will need to begin the process of adjusting to the new restrictions on plastic straws and polystyrene, more commonly known as Styrofoam, food service products.

As per the new bill, food establishments would be required to provide straws and stirrers by request only, and they would have to be biodegradable — not plastic. For customers with a disability or medical condition, plastic straws will be made available by request.

“The scale of the worldwide single-use plastics problem has become an ever-increasing threat to our environment and everything that relies on it, including human health,” said Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket). “The plastics crisis is more urgent than people realize.”

doesn’t use plastic straws and stirrers, and only uses paper goods, while Soul Brew in St. James said they switched over to paper goods at the end of last summer.

Constantinos Drepaniotis, co-owner of the Setauket Village Diner, said he and others have advocated for the environment and said the bans are quite a big step in right direction.

Drepaniotis’ diner hasn’t used Styrofoam food service products for close to two years and has begun reaching out to vendors for plastic straw alternatives. He has considered distributing reusable straws to his customers as well.

While the price of these alternatives has concerned business owners, the restaurant owner said it is business’ responsibility to be proactive and help in this environmental cause. The owner said he will not let the cost affect the business and it will adapt.

The Styrofoam bill would bar businesses from using items such as cups, trays and containers that are made from polystyrene, as well as ban retail stores from selling those products. It will require businesses in the county to use biodegradable products, though the bill would exempt items used to store uncooked eggs, raw meat, seafood and poultry.

Changes would take effect Jan. 1, 2020.

An employee from Tiger Lily Café in Port Jefferson said she dislikes plastic straws and hopes the new ban will potentially get people to bring their own reusable straws, mentioning that it is very expensive right now to purchase biodegradable alternatives, like paper straws.

While acknowledging the ban would be good for the environment, she said the cost is something a lot of entrepreneurs will have to deal with. The employee also hopes as the demands for these paper goods increase eventually the prices will go down and manufacturers will make it more cost effective.

Other businesses have been using alternatives to polystyrene containers. Setauket Pita House said it doesn’t use Styrofoam food containers and currently uses aluminum foil containers.

Officials also passed a third bill that would prohibit the sale of single-use plastic cups, utensils and beverage straws from county beaches and parks.

Last month, the Legislature approved a companion bill that would replace existing water fountains with new ones designed to allow bottle filling at county facilities and county-owned parks that have water dispensers.

The bills will now go to the county executive’s office to be signed into law.

John’s Crazy Socks founders speak at Port Jeff Village to call March 21 Crazy Sock Day

BY DAVID LUCES DLUCES@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COMA While a nice pair of socks draws the eyes down to the feet, John and Mark Cronin of John’s Crazy Socks ask that one look up, at the whole person and see what an individual can do, no matter the limits As part of their ongoing speaking tour, John and Mark Cronin of the Huntington-based John’s Crazy Socks, spoke to members of the Port Jefferson School District Special Education PTA and students April 8 about their inspiring story and the continuing strength of individuals with differing disabilities.

The Huntington father-son duo’s story began back in 2016 when John Cronin, a 22-year-old entrepreneur with Down syndrome, was trying to figure what he wanted to do after he graduated from Huntington High School.

Mark Cronin, John’s father, said together they looked at job programs and a college, but the younger Cronin didn’t see a lot of choices he liked.

Around that same time, the business the father worked for shut down overnight, leaving him suddenly unemployed.

That’s when the son came up with the idea of going into business with this dad. “[He’s] a natural entrepreneur — I don’t see something I want to do, so I’ll create it,” the

father said.

The 22-year-old entrepreneur went through a few ideas for a business until he ultimately went with crazy socks, stating that he didn’t like the selection he found at stores.

The duo opened John’s Crazy Socks Dec. 9, 2017, and initially were only expecting a few orders. Instead, they were flooded with requests, and people enjoyed the in-person deliveries and the personal card they received with their orders.

“We learned people wanted to buy socks, and buy them from John,” the elder Cronin said.

From there, the company has grown to offering more than 2,300 different styles of socks, and the duo now sells internationally. Last year, they shipped over 144,000 orders, accumulated over $5.5 million in revenue and have raised $280,000 for the company’s charity partners.

The father said their goal is to inspire, show the strengths of people with differing disabilities and their abilities.

“We are showing the brighter side of what people can do,” he said.

Currently the business has 23 employees who have some type of disability, and according to Mark Cronin, every person working for them earns their place through hard work.

“There is no charity here, everyone earns a job,” he added.

Over the years, the pair have advocated for jobs for individuals with disabilities. They have

gone to Washington, D.C., and Capitol Hill with a special message. “People are ready and willing to work, let’s make that possible.”

The father and son were in Detroit speaking to the National Down Syndrome Society recently, and earlier last month they went on a tour of Canada with the state department.

Karen Sullivan, president of the Port Jeff SEPTA, was glad the duo was able to come after planning this event for about a year.

“We really wanted to bring him into the village and show our students what is possible,” she said. “They are employing people with disabilities. It is important for Port Jeff SEPTA, these men and women need jobs after high school and what are they going to do.”

The duo was also presented with a proclamation from the Village of Port Jeff.

Village trustee Stan Louks presented the Cronins with the proclamation stating that every March 21 in the village will be known as Crazy Sock Day. While he added they did not have anything specific planned for the date, they are working out some kind of celebration that could help bring the community together.

“A great deal has to go to Karen Sullivan,” the trustee said. “SEPTA was not in the village and [it was] inactive — Karen really brought it back to life.”

Sullivan said this is the organization’s oneyear anniversary, and for close to 17 years Port Jeff didn’t have a special education PTA. “It’s very exciting to collaborate with the school district and the village,” she said “Mayor [Margot] Garant has been with us every step of the way.”

Holes vandalized at Port Jefferson golf course

The morning of Monday, April 8, Brian Macmillan, the golf course superintendent at the Port Jefferson Country Club, walked out onto the green of the village golf course and smelled something like gasoline. Five of the greens at the course had been hit with the substance.

The five holes, namely numbers 8,12,13,14 and 17, had been vandalized with a substance suspected to be gasoline of some type. The unknown perpetrators had released the substance in random patterns at each of the greens near the holes. Macmillan said he suspected the perpetrators did not do it by accident since each site of vandalism was specifically the greens instead of the grasses between. He added he had no notion why a person would commit the act, but suspected it was an intentional act to hurt the country club.

“This was pretty intentional and aggressive,” the golf club superintendent said. “Ninety-eight percent of the people in the club wouldn’t have

anything to do with their motive.”

Suffolk County police was contacted that morning, and Macmillan said they arrived very soon after they had been called. While police have been in contact with the country club asking questions, the superintendent said they have not received any updates on the ongoing investigation.

While the holes were sectioned off for the

day when the club learned of the vandalism, they have since become playable again.

Port Jefferson village trustee Stan Loucks, the liaison to the country club, said each hole had taken excessive damage. The village has since contacted seven different golf course renovation and construction companies to find a person to schedule repairs. Currently the cost to the village is unknown, and they hope it will be

covered under insurance for the course.

Loucks said April 15 the village had contracted out to East Northport-based Delea Sod Farms to handle the repairs, which would start April 22 and should take two to three days.

Macmillan said the substance permeated through the ground a foot and a half down. Repairs will require removing the damaged grass as well as the impacted soil below it. He added the country club has a nursery green used to replace portions of the holes that are damaged through heat stress and disease, though he said he had not expected to use it for a situation such as this.

Loucks added the village will likely use extra sod from holes 14 and 17. The impacted holes will be unusable during repair but will become playable again afterward, with the affected areas sectioned off during play.

The country club has been running with a new owner for just over a year. After a 15-year partnership with Port Jefferson village, Lombardi’s on the Sound handed ownership of the club over to Danfords in March 2018.

Police arrest Coram man for allegedly possessing child porn Suffolk County police arrested a Coram man April 12 for allegedly possessing child pornography.

Following an investigation, Suffolk County Computer Crimes Section detectives arrested David B. Korzeniowski at his home in Coram at approximately 4 p.m. for allegedly possessing child pornography on his computer.

Korzeniowski, 62, was charged with possessing a sexual performance by a child and promoting a sexual performance by a child, both being felonies. He was held overnight at the 6th Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip April 13. He is next set to appear in court April 18.

Korzeniowski was arrested in 2005 for the same crime, and his name appears on the New York State sex offenders listing.

Woman killed in traffic incident in Port Jefferson Station

in Port Jefferson Station April 13, according to police.

Suffolk County police said Jacob Cindone, 30, of Miller Place, was driving a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound on Nesconset Highway, near William Street, when his vehicle struck a woman who was walking in the road at 5:25 a.m.

The pedestrian, Katlin Catalano, 27, who

police said was undomiciled, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Cindone was not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the 6th Precinct police squad at 631-854-8652.

Suffolk County police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred in an East Setauket Subway April 15.

Police said a man with a gun entered Subway, located at 18 Woods Corner Road, and demanded cash from an employee at around 7:15 p.m. The employee complied, and the man fled the scene. There were no injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information on the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-220-TIPS (8477).

New York budget measures aim to address opioid crisis on LI Advocates say new budget has wins for people in recovery

BY MAUREEN ROSSI DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With the opioid epidemic still endemic throughout Suffolk County and beyond, New York State senators are hoping the new state budget will mean more help for those in the throes of addiction.

Measures woven into and passed in the state budget include increasing access for those suffering with substance use disorder to access 28-day inpatient and outpatient programs without prior insurance authorization. They also include money for a recovery high school start -up and no prior authorization for medicationassisted treatment.

“These are critical reform measures,” said New York State Sen. Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood). In addition, she touted another reform, which will require emergency rooms to enact screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment for all overdose patients before they are released. For the first time, emergency room doctors will also initiate medically-

assisted treatment to overdose patients prior to their release, utilizing drugs like buprenorphine that alleviate the craving for opioids including heroin.

The Island’s Democrats were joined by stakeholders to celebrate critical initiatives passed in this year’s state budget to combat Long Island’s pernicious opioid epidemic.

Those stakeholders include parents of those lost to the epidemic, those in recovery and those in the prevention and addiction field, including the CEO of Family & Children’s Association Jeffrey Reynolds, of Smithtown.

Nolan was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Nolan (nee Gallagher). He is survived by his seven children, Liam (Cheri), Maureen (Robert), Mark (Kris), Monica, Barbara (George), Andrew (Allison) and Richard Jr.; his eleven grandchildren, Alexandra Butera (Greg), Daniel, Emma, Taylore, Eli (Allison), Nick, Tim, Rob, Katie, Matthew and Ryan; and his two great-grandchildren, Sean Patrick and Henry Francis Butera.

The family hosted a viewing April 15 and 16 at Bryant Funeral Home in East Setauket.

A funeral Mass at Infant Jesus R.C. Church was celebrated April 17 with a burial following at Calverton National Cemetery with military honors.

Richard T. “Dick” Nolan, of Port Jefferson, died April 13. He was 87.

Nolan was born April 25, 1932 and was raised in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and was a graduate of St. Francis Preparatory School in 1949, of St. Francis College in 1955 and St. John’s University School of Law in 1958. Interrupting his college years, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an aviation engineer and later earned a commission in the active reserve as a second lieutenant. In law school, Nolan served as student editor of the St. Thomas More Institute, and later became publisher of the St. John’s Law Review and the Catholic Lawyer.

Nolan was a parishioner of Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson since 1968, where he had also served as trustee, parish council president, mass team captain, lector and member of the St. Joseph of Arimathea Society. Nolan and his wife of 55 years, Barbara, were the recipients of the Saint Agnes Medal of Service from the Diocese of Rockville Centre in 2013. His wife received the award posthumously.

Widely touted as the “Dean” of fire district attorneys, he served as counsel to the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York from 1987 to 1992. He was also counsel to the Suffolk County and

again,” Kaplan said. “We are done with halfmeasures — we will do everything we can to help people get into long-term recovery.”

One such measure included and passed in the budget was the funding of another THRIVE center for Nassau in Hempstead. The doors are scheduled to open next month.

Kaminsky met with some Long Island parents who lost loved ones to the epidemic prior to the budget process. Figures released by the addiction experts on Long Island put that figure at 3,400 since 2010.

“When a parent tells you the story of how they found their child (dead), you want to make sure another parent doesn’t experience that,” said Kaminsky.

When it came to budget negotiations that lasted around the clock, the state senator said they would not take no for an answer.

Suffolk County has long been a powerhouse when it comes to shining a light on the opioid epidemic and taking legislative measures to address it. Packages of historic bills have been pushed through statewide by Suffolk County advocates. The county is one of the state’s hardest hit counties and they were the first county in the country to file a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the makers of the drug OxyContin.

Reynolds addressed the senators on behalf of the sixty-plus advocates present. “ ‘Thank you’ seems insufficient. You promised on campaign trails you would do good for Long Island. Thank you so much for your efforts,” he stated.

However, Reynolds promised that he and the Long Island advocacy movement will always ask the senators to do more.

BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Comsewogue’s girls softball team stayed within striking distance through six innings of play, trailing West Islip by one run through the first five. But the Lions’ bats came alive in the top of the 7th, scoring four unanswered runs to put the game away 8-2. The Warriors scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first but struggled offensively the rest of the way in a League III matchup at home April 16.

The loss drops the Warriors to 2-5 in the league and 2-6

Reform school taxes

The thrust of Brooke Ellison’s column in the March 28 edition of The Port Times Record regarding the release of the Mueller report could have come straight from the mouths of Democratic U.S. Reps. Adam Schiff and Jerrold Nadler.

Unlike Independent Counsel Ken Starr, who was answerable to Congress, Mueller is a special counsel appointed by and answerable to the U.S. attorney general.

Suffolk County homeowners pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation, with a typical bill estimated at $8,926.

In New York City, the average property tax bill is $4,822 and across the United States it’s $3,018. Those are New York State’s numbers. It’s clear to everyone that the property tax burden has become unbearable on Long Island. It’s driving people away, impacting family budgets, and for homes that bear above average taxes, home values are plummeting.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said during an April 11 budget presentation at Stony Brook University that he recognizes the problem. He’s made it law that schools and communities in the state must limit budget increases to 2 percent. It will help … to a degree.

He and other states have joined hands to lobby the president and congressional leaders to reinstate the state and local tax reduction write-off for federal income taxes. A bipartisan bill was introduced this week by U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) to reinstate the deduction. If it passes, that will also help … to a degree.

But these measures are merely band-aid solutions to a larger, chronic problem: income inequality. The tax burden has shifted from corporations and the wealthy to middle and lower classes.

If state leaders want to help Long Island residents make ends meet, major changes need to take place, mainly in the way primary education is funded. Property taxes are largely used to fund local school districts. Local control is good, but the disparities from one community to the next indicate the problem.

A simple Google search shows that in Southampton, for example, a six-bedroom home, built in 2006 that sits on 1.73 acres, is on the market for $2.6 million, with taxes totaling $6,458. In Kings Park, a two-bedroom home, built in 1960, situated on 0.13 of an acre, lists for $265,000, but incurs more property taxes: $7,056.

New York needs a better system.

In his budget speech, Cuomo got it right when he said if you don’t have it, you can’t pay for it. But governor has curiously not stepped in to help the Town of Huntington, which is facing legal proceedings with LIPA and National Grid. LIPA and National Grid want to reduce the tax burden on the Northport power plant by 90%. LIPA is a state entity created in 1997, when the state bailed out LILCO and its failed Shoreham nuclear project. Since then, LIPA has been reimbursing National Grid for its power plant’s property taxes. This case most dramatically impacts the Northport-East Northport School District and the 35,000 residents who live there.

A Boston Globe article from 2014 reports that National Grid’s CEO saw a 50% salary increase from $5 million to $7.8 that year. That was just four years after LIPA and National Grid filed its tax certiorari case against the Town of Huntington..

Long Island taxpayers need major reform to alleviate and more equitably distribute the property tax burden.

Public isn’t legally entitled to Mueller report are entitled to matters contained therein that are classified/relate to an ongoing investigation or grand jury testimony.

That is the law, and to overcome the law would require a judge’s order directing the release of such material and specifying to whom it could be released.

Moreover, either a prosecutor (such as Mueller) has enough evidence to indict or he or she doesn’t. If you can’t indict, you cannot take the insufficient evidence

and use it for political purposes, which Ellison’s column seems to endorse. Here, Mueller failed to find sufficient evidence to indict and therefore did not indict!

Furthermore, the media reporting of this whole episode has further undermined the credibility of the media and maybe even tarnished the Pulitzer Prize.

PJ village should rethink its parking plans I was unable to appear in person for the planning board public hearing on March 14 as I was out of town. However, I have some concerns about the proposed parking on Barnum Avenue and was able to review the plans a few weeks ago.

Since returning home, I have also read the newspaper’s coverage of the hearing.

While parking will continue to be a volatile issue in our village, I find it unnecessary to scour open areas for possible redevelopment to accommodate cars and more cars. The village is not obligated to provide parking for new and existing uses, but instead should require that applications for uses or expanded uses meet the code for parking on site, or be denied. In past years,

many retail and restaurant applications have not done so. Therefore, instead of enforcing this aspect of the code, the village feels that it must make up for this “negligence,” whether it be with “payment in lieu of …” or taking monies from the Parking Committee’s original focus of redesigning and landscaping existing lots, such as Trader’s Cove, the Gap lot, Meadow lot, Baker’s Alley and the village resident lot on Arden Place.

Several of these lots have already been redesigned in the past 10 years, allowing for more available spaces.

In my opinion, spending $300,000 on a new 44-space lot is excessive. The original intent to provide parking on the property the village purchased makes sense. Leave

it at that and allow first come, first served to park there. Why would we eliminate the 30-plus diagonal parking spaces on Caroline Avenue? It’s just a short walk to village shops and ideal for all day parking for employees, sports played on the field and activities in the village. Let’s better utilize the areas that we already have and go forward with updating remaining village lots, such as the Gap lot and village lot on Arden Place.

The Joe Erland Park, with its attractive sign facing Barnum Avenue on a naturally wooded area, is meaningful.

Please let this remain as the entrance to the playing fields named in his memory.

A goodbye to primary supporters and LI Dear friends and followers of the Elaine DiMasi 2018 Congressional campaign in New York: With excitement and also sadness, I would like to let you know that I am leaving our Long Island community for a new job in California.

Specifically, I will be joining the leadership team for a $358M upgrade project at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. After more than 20 years as a scientist and project leader in the national laboratory system, I am delighted to be joining terrific people and ready to return to the work I know best.

Yet, this means saying farewell to so many of the wonderful connections I’ve made in our community here and to the chance of public service in elected office.

My political mission in the future will be to help other scientists do an even

better job of running for office than my team and I were able to do. The voice and perspective of a trained scientist can do a world of good as part of a diverse legislative body.

At the same time, a scientist often works at state and federal institutions, prohibiting a campaign. Scientists often do not hold jobs suitable for part-time hours or for repeated lengthy work stops. These obstacles can be overcome. And I have quite a few things to say about how our strategy should differ from the advice offered to candidates from other walks of life.

To begin this mission, my team is preparing a video based on a talk invited by the Graduate Student Women in Science and Engineering at Stony Brook University last November. This video will be posted soon at www. elainedimasi.com. The website will

The equivalent of a literary eye roll

W

hen we want to use a pronoun to refer to a deity, we use a capital letter out of respect, so that even if we’re writing about His will, we use the capital “H” in the middle of a sentence. For some, of course, the capital letter could also represent a female deity, as in, I thought I would get the job, but, apparently, She had other plans for D. None me.

But what about all the people we can’t

stand, whose ideas are ruining our day or, gasp, our country?

We have long used symbols or faux letters, like an asterisk (*) to take the place of a letter or words we all know, so that we might write, “What the **** was he thinking when he cut me off for a parking spot at the supermarket?”

Nowadays, though, I think the politics of personal animus requires more than a few letter abbreviation or a casual dismissal. We need the equivalent of a literary eye roll, which can show a level of antipathy and disrespect befitting the lack of humanity, the utter depravity or the absolute inanity that defines someone’s actions or words that make us grind our teeth or snarl in frustration.

How about a super lower-case first letter of a pronoun, to make it clear that we don’t just disagree with someone, but we find that person so frustrating, evil, despicable, irritating and/ or ridiculous that the person doesn’t merit a customary human pronoun? Perhaps we need a

symbol that does the graffiti equivalent of writing that person’s name and spray painting an “X” or a thumbs-down sign over it.

Instead of referring to the person people either love, hate or love to hate, as he or him, we could use a diminutive placeholder for the personal pronoun, like *e seems poised to start another war to satisfy his ego, or *is idea so completely lacked substance that it’s hard to argue with *im when *e hasn’t read any intelligence reports.

On the other side, we might see a nemesis as unworthy of a typical pronoun, arguing that *he is preventing this great country from marching forward or *er ideas seem rooted in the word “no.”

But, of course, this doesn’t have to be limited to the power elite in Washington, D.C. It can refer to anyone, allowing us to alter the personal pronoun in a way that underscores our distaste for the idea, the person, or *is or *er actions.

Let’s say we’re watching a Little League game and a mother, father, grandparent or just random fan comes by and heckles an umpire.

That seems so utterly absurd that, in the retelling, we might want to point out how *is words set the wrong example, or *he made me throw up in my mouth.

When we’re tapping out a text message to our friends, we might share our disgust that *he had the nerve to ask me if *er choice to date my best friend was OK. We might realize that this person seemed eager to train *er dog to use my lawn as a bathroom or that *e was telling me how to live my life when *e apparently has no idea how to live *is.

These super lower-case pronouns can allow us to vent in code to our family and friends.

We might suggest that *e is driving me crazy.

If *e actually read the email or text, *e might have no idea that the subject of this diminutive pronoun is, in fact, *im.

‘The British are coming! The British are coming!’ Not really.

Listen, my children, and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, On the eighteenth of April in Seventy-Five: Hardly a man is now alive Who remembers that famous day and year.

So begins Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” about the famous midnight gallop that happened 244 years ago. The poem was first published in The Atlantic Monthly on January 1861, and I dutifully learned the first lines as a young student. As a result, every April Between 18 I think of Paul you and me Revere.

Who, exactly

I know that he was a talented silversmith because I have seen some of his work, starting with teapots and

engravings, at antique shows. I also assumed that Revere was an ardent colonialist, hanging out with the likes of Samuel Adams and John Hancock, to whom he rode through the night in Concord to warn them of imminent capture by the British troops. That was about it until I did a little research, and here is what I found.

Revere was born in Boston on either Dec. 21, 1734, or Jan. 1, 1735, depending on different calendar conversions. That still makes him 40 years old that famous night. His father was Apollos Rivoire, a French Huguenot immigrant who had come on his own at the age of 13 to the New World and eventually married Deborah Hitchborn, the Boston-born daughter of an artisan and wharf-owning family (whose last name was also spelled Hichborn and Hitchbourn). Revere, the third of 12 children, attended school from age 7 through 13 and then learned the silversmithing trade. He was married twice, having been widowed in 1773 and remarried that same year, which means he was little more than a newlywed the night of the ride.

In addition to his work with silver, Revere did some dentistry to augment his income. He participated in the Boston Tea Party, during

which Bostonians threw tea into Boston Harbor from the holds of ships anchored there to protest against parliamentary taxation without representation.

The colonists were increasingly angered by severe taxes imposed on them by their mother country to help repay the considerable debt Britain had incurred from fighting the French and Indian War. Revere, as a rider for Boston’s Committee on Safety, had devised a system of signals with lanterns to communicate the whereabouts of the British soldiers. Hence that night, the message was, “One, if by land, two, if by sea.” In a sense, Revere was Boston’s first media man.

With others, he was aware that the British troops might shortly be on the move because on April 16, 1775, he rode out to Concord, Massachusetts, to urge the patriots there to move their military stores to a different location.

On the night of April 18, Dr. Joseph Warren told Revere and William Dawes that the king’s troops were about to embark in boats from Boston to go to Cambridge, and from there to Lexington and Concord by road that night. Revere borrowed a swift mare named Brown Beauty,

and waited on the far bank of the Charles River for the signal from the steeple of the Old North Church. Revere and Dawes made the ride from different locations should one of them be blocked from leaving Boston.

Revere, however, had the benefit of a distinguished publicist, Longfellow, who honored him accordingly. Also left out of the story was Dr. Samuel Prescott, who rode on to Concord after Revere was captured by a British patrol in Lexington. Revere soon escaped, while Dawes lost his horse and had to walk back to Lexington. But Prescott made it through to carry the warning.

Revere and the others surely did not yell, “The British are coming!” despite tales to the contrary. They were, in the final analysis, all British. They probably said, “The redcoats are coming!” and they surely didn’t yell since British troops were stationed throughout the countryside. Such is the mystique of history.

But “that famous day and year,” we know from ensuing battles, is true and to be celebrated this day.
