State Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson Station) announced the Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $3,000 scholarships for high school seniors entering college or current college students. “With the high expenses of college, students should take advantage of every opportunity to offset the costs,” LaValle said. “I am hopeful that students in my district apply for the awards. Nothing would make me more proud than to have our area residents be selected to receive one of the scholarships.” Eligibility is based upon the student’s grade point average (85 or higher), involvement in sports, involvement in the local community and individual financial need. The potential ramifications of the looming LIPA lawsuit specter may finally be coming into focus. Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant announced during a public hearing April 2 on the 2018-19 budget the village is “on the cusp of a settlement” with the Long Island Power Authority, which would end the legal battle being waged since 2010 regarding the assessed valuation and property tax bill the public utility has been paying on its Port Jefferson power plant. LIPA has argued the estimate is too high based on decreased energy demand, and the village accused LIPA of breaching its contract, which was supposed to run until 2028. The village and Port Jefferson School District receive substantial revenue from LIPA’s tax dollars and have had the prospect of lost revenue hanging over future financial planning. About half of the village’s revenue comes from LIPA’s tax bill. Port Jefferson is among other municipalities, like Northport, which host plants that have lawsuits against LIPA and believe the contract has been breached. Garant said the board came to the decision to write $107,000 into the upcoming budget to create a reserve fund to prepare in anticipation for a “glide path” agreement, in which the village’s LIPA revenue will be scaled down gradually over time. The figure was chosen to bring the total budget’s tax levy increase to exactly 2 percent, thus avoiding asking residents to pierce the cap. The 2018-19 adopted budget is $10,642,146, about $233,000 up from to the current year, with the largest driver of the increase being the money set aside to deal with LIPA. “The appropriations of reserves that we have accumulated over the last six to seven years aside, once we know what the glide path looks like, we will be putting our fund balance, monies that we’ve built, into that reserve account, which kind of locks it away so that future boards, if there should be future boards, can’t take that money and do
Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant something else with it,” Garant said. “It’ll preserve that money and entrust it to contributing toward the glide path.” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) announced during his State of the Town address April 3 it had reached a settlement with LIPA on its version of the assessment suit. Village Attorney Brian Egan said Brookhaven’s settlement would have no impact on Port Jeff’s discussions, and that negotiations were ongoing. “This year it’s basically another rollover budget like we’ve had in the past with very minimal changes,” village treasurer, Denise Mordente, said during the presentation. Other factors contributing to the budget increase included contractual raises for village employees, the increasing minimum wage, increased costs for medical benefits, and some additional funds for code enforcement that were used for installing security cameras and maintenance throughout the village, among a few others. The board also passed a resolution that would give it the option to pierce the tax levy increase cap — as it does every year — should it need to do so, though that is not in the village’s plans for the upcoming year. Port Jefferson School District offered a scathing statement in response to the news about Brookhaven’s settlement, saying it is “deeply troubled,” to hear of the settlement. “This decision will imminently place the School District in harm’s way,” the statement said.

Bids are being accepted, and will continue to be through April 16, for a project that village officials hope will stave off erosion at the Port Jefferson East Beach Area and Pavilion which is endangering a tennis court. Port Jeff has been trying to figure out how to deal with its shrinking beach and slumping bluff at least as far back as early 2016. The new plan of action is to build a wall — it’s yet to be determined whether it will be built out of steel or a revetment of rocks — at the base of the bluff. Overhead images of the beach from Google Earth show the shoreline between the Long Island Sound and a bluff that leads to the grounds of the Port Jefferson Country Club shrinking over the years. Officials are concerned about tennis court No. 4 at the country club, which has inched closer to the edge of the bluff as the beach has eroded. “The Village of Port Jefferson’s shoreline suffered significant structural damage, resulting from multiple state-of-emergency storm events,” said a Jan. 17, 2017, letter from GEI Consultants, a privately owned consulting firm contracted by Port Jeff, to the village regarding its concerns about erosion. After the East Coast was hit with four storms classified as nor’easters by the National Weather Service in March, a walkway and pavilion on the eastern end of the parking lot at the end of Village Beach Road was severely damaged, and many trees can be seen uprooted and horizontal at the bottom west of the road. “That whole area of East Beach is just a disaster,” Trustee Stan Loucks said during a
March board meeting after taking a look at the area. Trustee Bruce D’Abramo called it “scary” to see how badly the beach is eroding. In an article entitled “Forgotten North Shore vulnerable to sea level rise” published by TBR News Media in January, R. Lawrence Swanson, the interim dean and associate dean of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, said staving off erosion of bluffs is a complicated problem on the North Shore that will require more research from New York State. “What can be done in the way of resiliency to preserve the character of the North Shore and yet also protect individual properties on the Sound — both those on the cliffs and those on the barrier spits?” he wrote. “Is hardening the bluffs and beaches at great expense the answer? Do we let nature take its course? Do residents on the barrier beaches have rights to the sediment of eroding cliffs in much the same way that downstream California claims rights to Colorado River water? If hardening of bluffs is allowed, will there be enough sediment at the toe to maintain a beach to reduce wave run-up? New York State needs to examine this issue and develop guidance that works for all.” He warned that construction of sea walls can hinder the natural process of erosion from the base of North Shore bluffs, reducing the materials available to maintain barrier spits, or formations caused by the lateral movement of water along a shoreline, subjecting bluffs to “over washing.” “Beaches fronting the bluffs will disappear so that waves will be beating directly on the seawalls,” he said. “This is a regional issue that cannot be solved property by property or even on a town-by-town basis.”

A 19-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole food and cash from someone delivering Chinese food on Glenmere Lane in Coram at about 8 p.m. Feb. 10, according to police. At about 9:30 p.m. the same day, she allegedly stole cash and food from another Chinese food delivery person on Andover Drive in Port Jefferson Station, police said. She was arrested March 29 in Port Jeff Station and charged with two counts of second-degree robbery.
Laptop stolen
A laptop was stolen from an employee of a small business on Route 25A in Port Jefferson Station at about 9 a.m. March 29, according to police.

At about 2:45 a.m. April 1, a 24-year-old man from Port Jefferson was walking on Main Street in Port Jefferson near the intersection of Arden Place carrying a full pizza box when he allegedly took the full box and smashed it in another individual’s face, according to police. He then allegedly proceeded to punch the individual in the face on the ground, police said. The man then allegedly punched a telephone pole and tackled a second individual, punching him in the face numerous times while on the ground, police said. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Groceries stolen
A 74-year-old woman from Miller Place allegedly stole miscellaneous groceries from King Kullen on Nesconset Highway in Mount Sinai at about 2 p.m. April 2, according to police. She was arrested and charged with petit larceny.
Cash stolen from cars
At about 10 p.m. March 31, someone stole money from within a 2004 Mazda parked on Kool Place in Terryville, according to police. At about midnight, cash was stolen from within an unlocked 2017 Chevrolet also parked on Kool Place in Terryville, police said.
Shed break-in
The window of a shed in the yard of a home on Foxdale Lane in Setauket was broken at about 12:30 a.m. March 31, according to police.
Supermarket theft
A 33-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station allegedly stole groceries from Stop & Shop on Pond Path in South Setauket at about 2:30 p.m. March 30, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.
Makeup stolen
Cosmetics were stolen from Duane Reade on Stony Brook Road in Stony Brook at about 10 a.m. March 28, according to police.

Three power drills were stolen from Ace Hardware on Route 25A in Setauket at about 5 p.m. March 28, according to police.

A 24-year-old man from Ronkonkoma allegedly stole a Polaroid camera and tax software from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket March 26, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.
False report
While at Stony Brook University Hospital April 2 receiving treatment for a cut allegedly from a razor blade, a 29-year-old man from Farmingville allegedly reported he was robbed at gunpoint, with items being stolen from him and sustaining a cut from a razor blade, according to police. Police said they determined the report of the gunpoint robbery to be false. He was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident.
Open container
On March 29, a 49-year-old man from Ridge was in the parking lot of Jefferson Shopping Plaza on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station allegedly with an open container of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with breaking town ordinance on open alcohol containers.
Landscaping tools stolen
On March 29, a 41-year-old man from Mastic Beach allegedly stole various landscaping tools from a business on Middle Country Road in Selden, according to police. He was arrested and charged with petit larceny.
Drug bust
Between June 2016 and March 2018, a 21-year-old man from Middle Island allegedly was involved with multiple sales of cocaine, according to police. Police specifically alleged he sold heroin while on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station in January 2017 and crack cocaine on Hartsdale Lane in Coram in April 2017. Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) is nothing if not confident about the future of the town he oversees. Brookhaven Town’s leader delivered his annual State of the Town address at Town Hall April 3 in which he touted its financial footing while also looking toward the future. “The state of Brookhaven Town is good and getting better,” Romaine said. “Brookhaven Town, though not perfect, is still a town full of promise and hope. It is up to all of us who live here to help realize that promise.” Brookhaven has a structurally balanced budget for the current fiscal year that stays within the state mandated tax levy increase cap, in addition to maintaining its AAA bond rating from Standard & Poor’s financial services company. Romaine detailed a few cost-saving measures he said he’d like to accomplish going forward, including more sharing of services among other municipalities as a way to streamline government and save taxpayer money. “Sharing resources and services to reduce the size, scope and cost of government is one of the best ways to control and reduce expenses,” he said, adding the town remains in the running for a shared services grant from New York State that, if selected, would add $20 million to Brookhaven’s effort. “We must continue to closely monitor our capital and operating expenses. Our residents cannot pay more in taxes. Too many Long Islanders are leaving.” He said growing the local economy through additional jobs was another priority for him and the town going forward. Romaine said he still hopes Brookhaven will be selected as the second national headquarters for Amazon, which he said could bring in about 50,000 jobs to the town. He also praised the work of the Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency, an arm
of municipalities dedicated to funding projects that will stimulate job creation and economic growth. “The IDA closed on 20 projects that will result in $435 million of private investment and the creation of 4,050 permanent or [temporary] construction jobs,” the supervisor said. “In addition, the IDA has 13 approved projects that have or are about to close in 2018, with the potential for another $440 million of private investment into our town, creating or retaining another 1,000 jobs.” Romaine detailed several “green” initiatives already underway or on the horizon in 2018, noting the real threat to Brookhaven posed by climate change and sea level rise. “With the largest coastline of any town in New York state, the Town of Brookhaven knows full well that global climate change and sea level rise is real and poses significant challenges in the decades ahead,” he said. He said the town has adopted a practice of “strategic retreat” from commercial and residential development in low-lying areas to allow nature to reclaim wetlands. He called land use and zoning among the most important powers a town government possesses. He also pointed to the imminent closure of Brookhaven’s landfill as a wakeup call in need of attention in the coming years. He said the town is ready to work with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other towns to formulate a regional plan for solid waste disposal. The supervisor also made an impassioned call for updates to the Long Island Rail Road, including electrification of the Port Jefferson line east beyond the Huntington station, adding he co-authored a letter to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority asking for just that with Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci (R) and Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R). “It is time for a better transportation system, one based on 21st century innovation, not 19th century technology,” Romaine said.

President Donald Trump (R) signed the Adult Day Health Care Act into law this week, a bipartisan bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) that will expand access to health care for disabled veterans who need extra assistance and special attention in their daily lives, according to a press release from Zeldin’s office. “This is important legislation that provides a valuable and necessary service to our nation’s veterans,” Zeldin said in a statement. “By expanding access to Adult Day Health Care, we can ensure that all veterans receive the best and most efficient outpatient services that provide each veteran with the assistance and special attention they need, while still allowing them to maintain their independence.” The bill defines the program as a reimbursable treatment option through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Previously, the program was only accessible for disabled veterans at three state veterans homes in the country, leaving the expense of health care oftentimes directly shouldered by the veteran and his or her
family, according to the press release. One of the three homes was Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. The Adult Day Health Care Act provides comprehensive medical and personal care combined with engaging social activities for the physically or cognitively impaired, as well as an array of therapies and counseling. With the passage of the bill, now those who are 70 percent or more disabled as a result of their service are able to access the in-home day care at no cost at any of the 153 state veterans homes in the U.S. “I am grateful to Congressman Zeldin for having the foresight to introduce this bill on behalf of all severely service-connected veterans who reside in state veterans homes across the country,” Vietnam veteran and patient of the Stony Brook facility Al Anderson said in a statement. “The bottom line is that this legislation will allow me to return home to my family while still having the ability to receive essential services through the Adult Day Health Care program. I can keep my chronic conditions in check and still enjoy the comforts of my own home.” Fred Sganga, director of the Long Island State Veterans Home, also thanked Zeldin for his efforts in advancing the legislation. “This legislation helps to restore a veteran’s freedom to remain an active member of their community even after succumbing to the perils of military service,” he said. “Congressman Zeldin never forgets the sacrifice of brave women and men who donned the uniform to protect the freedoms we all enjoy today.” The Senate version of the bill was sponsored by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). “Our nation’s veterans and their dedicated families have sacrificed enough,” Zeldin said. “This bill will give veterans the care they have earned while providing families with the support and relief they need to help their veteran loved ones to lead a fulfilling life, while keeping families together and strong.”

Honoring a Holocaust survivor Students in Kayleen Everitt’s eighthgrade English classes at Port Jefferson Middle School took a unique route in using their intellectual skills to examine and understand world history. Before welcoming Werner Reich, a Holocaust survivor, as a guest speaker, they honored him with a poetic tribute of their own inspiring thoughts. After an introduction by student Kyle Johnson, who thanked Reich for sharing his firsthand account of the events of the Nazi Germany genocide, student Kasumi Layne-Stasik read German theologian Martin Niemöller’s well-known poem, “First they came …,” and explained that the students rephrased it in their own writings to correspond with issues of today
including among other topics gun violence, conservation and equality between men and women in hopes of inspiring change. Student Sofia Ulinski then introduced Ella Barrett, Jordyn Capone, Kate Carlson, Zoe Intardanado, Andrew Patterson and Abigail Rolfe who read their own poems before Reich shared his compelling story of survival and message of tolerance and acceptance. “They did an incredible job and were courageous and brave for sharing their creative work in front of the entire grade,” Everitt said. “I am most proud of their creativity, civic awareness and leadership.” Everitt is pictured, at left above, with her students.

During the visit, the supervisor presented a proclamation to the Rev. Demitrios Calogredes, protopresbyter from the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption in Port Jefferson. Greek Independence Day is celebrated annually

The Port Jefferson Board of Education recently recognized Jodi Cahill, the district’s director of special education, for earning her education doctorate degree. In honor of this achievement, the district presented her with a commemorative certificate at a recent board meeting. Cahill’s work of providing a meaningful and rewarding education for Port Jefferson School District students has been enhanced by her work in defending her doctoral dissertation, the district said. PJ chocolate shop donates 22-lb bunny to soup kitchen Easter was a little sweeter this year for guests of Welcome Friends Soup Kitchen thanks to a donation from a Port Jefferson chocolate shop. The soup kitchen in Port Jefferson serves a hot, fresh meal homemade by volunteers at several area churches free of charge for those in need on a daily basis. For patrons who stopped in to First Presbyterian Church on Main Street March 30 for dinner, a stunning visual awaited for dessert. Brian and Christine Viscount, owners of the Kilwins located on Main Street in Port Jeff, elected to take an offering from the company’s corporate headquarters to commemorate Easter. For the last two weeks the store has been displaying a 3-foot-tall, 22-lb milk chocolate Easter Bunny behind Plexiglas, which it donated to the soup kitchen for guests to take home on the Friday before Easter Sunday. “We knew we wanted to have the bunny in our store because it gives the store that ‘wow’ effect, but we wanted to do something special with it afterward,” Christine Viscount said. “We were trying to think of a charitable way to use the bunny, and we spoke with the mayor’s office actually and they gave us some ideas. When we heard about the soup kitchen we said what better
way for a lot of people to enjoy the chocolate — no one family needs 22 pounds. We thought this would be the perfect fit.” The solid chocolate bunny was displayed whole for guests to admire during dinner, then broken into pieces by the Viscounts before being bagged up and sent home with the guests as an Easter treat. It was made in the Kilwins kitchen in Petoskey, Michigan, using the company’s truffle chocolate and a giant bunny mold. “The guests were so pleased with the fun of having this huge bunny on site as they entered the dining room,” Marge Tumilowicz, president of Welcome Friends, said in an email after the meal. “Everyone was thrilled to take home the full gift bags. Welcome Friends thanks our new neighbors from Kilwins for their kindness, generosity and community spirit.” Lorraine Kutzing, a co-coordinator at the soup kitchen who was on hand helping volunteers March 30, said seeing the bunny and taking home the chocolate made the day special for guests. “For a lot of them, they probably won’t be getting a lot of chocolate for this holiday, so at least we’re able to give them a taste of something that’s really good,” she said. “It just means a lot that the community backs us the way they do to do something like this, to provide for those less fortunate, I think that’s wonderful.”

County hopes to complete controversial trail by 2020 BY KYLE BARR KYLE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM With the Rails to Trails bike path another step closer to completion, many residents are still shouting “not in my backyard.” At a meeting inside Shoreham-Wading River High School’s cafeteria March 27, locals repeated concerns about privacy and security for homes adjacent to the trail. “They say it’s going to be scenic, but where I’m from, you’re literally 6 feet from somebody’s fence — what’s scenic about that?” Rocky Point resident Mary Anne Gladysz said, pointing to the satellite maps that detailed the path the 10-mile Page A26 trail from Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Mount Sinai to Wading River Manor Road in Wading River would take. Her property would have only a few yards of buffer from the trail. “If I had trees behind my property I wouldn’t care that much, but I have little kids, I have a tiny dog that’s going to go nuts.” The current timeline of the trail 30 years in the making shows final design plans will be submitted to the New York State Department of Transportation May 1, and a final approval is expected to be received in October. The county would receive bids for construction in the fall with ground breaking expected to begin in spring 2019, ending in fall 2020. The total cost of construction is

estimated to be $8.8 million, $500,000 of which will come from Suffolk County, and the rest from federal funds, according to Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (DMount Sinai). “The vision in my mind is an ecotourism hub,” Anker said. “They can visit the Tesla museum, they can go into downtown Rocky Point, which really needs more passive traffic, they can stop in shops all the way into Mount Sinai.” The plan does not include building fences around properties that don’t already have them. Privacy was a major point of concern for Rocky Point resident Gary Savickas. “I have a 7-foot fence on my property, and with how high the trail will be, I will have people looking over my fence,” he said. “I would have to build a 30-foot fence if I wanted to keep eyes off my yard. I think we can spend that $8 million differently.” Anker said she hopes to procure additional funding through local civic organizations for fences and shrubbery to help with privacy issues and added she and her team hope to be able to meet the privacy needs of the community while the trail along the LIPAowned property, formerly an old railroad line, is being built. “A lot of folks have converged on the right-of-ways with structures, with fencing, with pools, and what we’re going to do is work around them,” she said. “We’re going to veer the trail as far around any of those structures as possible.”

Thee Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe president, Jane Alcorn, said she’s all for anything that will bring more attention to Nikola Tesla’s last standing laboratory. “We see it as another link to the site,” she said. “We hope that it will bring something positive to these communities.” The pitch inside the high school cafeteria grew as residents grouped in circles to discuss the pros and cons of the trail, and asked questions to representatives from both Suffolk County Department of Public Works and engineering company NV5. Rocky Point resident Bob Lacorte has biked through Rails to Trails paths in several other states, and said it’s normal for trails to cut close to people’s property. “I’m still for them,” he said. “It’s for people who want to safely ride their bikes. My property doesn’t back up to [where the trail will be located], but honestly, I don’t know how I’d feel if that was my property.” Many people, like Lacorte, enjoyed the idea of a safe space for kids to walk or bicycle. “You want people to feel safe with their kids, it’s going to be a safe place to encourage people to bicycle,” said Michael Vitti, president of advocacy group Concerned Long Island Mountain Bikers. “You want to get kids involved in a healthy outdoor activity, but you don’t want them to feel unsafe on the street. This will be a traffic-free space.” The double-laned, 10-foot-wide trail will be split in half by a yellow line. Features will include kiosks at trailheads, quarter-mile
markers and railing when the trail meets an incline. Where the path intersects with high-traffic roads, there will be flashing yellow signs to signal those using the trails to stop, and warnings on the street side for drivers to be wary, said Daniel Loscalzo, senior civil engineer for NV5. Rocky Point Fire Chief Mike Yacubich said all his original complaints about the trail had been addressed, specifically the road markers, which will help emergency personnel quickly locate someone in need of emergency assistance. “I like the positive things they’re saying it will bring to the community,” he said. “They have addressed some of our concerns as responders, we just need the community to be vigilant to make sure that nobody is hanging out there after dusk.” Members of the Suffolk County Police Department also spoke to residents about concerns of drugs, home invasions and the use of ATVs. Officers referenced the nearby Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail, using it as an example to show how little-tono incidents have occurred along that 11mile trail. “There haven’t been any spikes in burglaries or home invasions on the [Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail],” Community Oriented Police Officer Enforcement unit Sgt. Walter Langdon said. “With the right-of-ways people can already access the rear of these houses. With more people on the trail, there’s more people to call 911. In a way, it’s safer.”

Rails to Trails needs upkeep after completion
We were among those excited to hear the long-discussed 10-mile bike trail from Mount Sinai to Wading River Rails to Trails project finally seems to be getting off the ground. With work expected to begin in spring 2019, the LIPA-owned property will be put to great community use with countless benefits for both locals and visitors to the area. We have heard complaints from residents whose properties abut the trail, and we’ve also heard of issues at other comparable trails on Long Island. It is incumbent on the organizers of this project — Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai), engineering firm NV5 and the county’s Department of Public Works — to not only hear but also act on resident concerns all along the way. While we understand having a trail suddenly run through your backyard can be a disruptive new addition to a home with the potential to attract strangers, we would argue unused woods can also attract undesirable behaviors. This is not to say that steps shouldn’t be taken to buffer the trail from property lines. We are confident that an amicable compromise can be reached as long as residents’ concerns are truly taken into account. The popular Long Island Greenbelt Trail, which is overseen by the nonprofit Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, is regularly in need of volunteers to help maintain and clean up the massive trail. To its credit, the group has a tab on its website where hikers can submit reports about issues or problems along the trail. Something like this would be great when the Mount Sinai-to-Wading River project is complete. Building a bike trail for residents and tourists alike to enjoy and utilize is great in theory, but maintaining it and keeping it vibrant is another project entirely. We would even propose the newly created chambers of commerce in each of the hamlets through which the trail runs divide the 10 miles and host quarterly cleanups. We were also glad to hear mile markers will be included on the trail to make it easier for people in need of emergency assistance to let authorities know where on the trail they are located. We’d like to see something similar to what Cold Spring Harbor State Park implemented a few years ago to ensure safety for users of the trail. Suffolk County police officer James Garside helped develop and implement innovative GPS-enabled trail markers there, and since installation in 2017, a man who suffered a heart attack on the trail was saved thanks to the availability of his precise location. We also hope this new trail is like the Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail in one specific way. “From the 6th Precinct’s standpoint there haven’t been any spikes in burglaries or home invasions on the [Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail],” Community Oriented Police Enforcement unit Sgt. Walter Langdon said during a discussion about safety on the new trail. “With the right-of-ways, people can already access the rear of these houses. With more people on the trail, there’s more people to call 911. In a way, it’s safer.” Projects for public good are always great by us, but keeping a neighbor-friendly status will require attention and work.

Zeldin: Get your priorities straight On March 24, my husband and I went to Stony Brook University’s March For Our Lives where SBU students and parents walked with placards joining their brethren in hearts and minds who were marching in Washington, D.C. They, as many other people in cities across the country, were stating their views regarding the anti-gun movement. As I watched, I thought how nice it would be if our local Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) joined and assisted the enthusiastic youngsters in their quest. After all, he is supposed to be caring for his people, not their guns or their right to massacre others with them. There was also a march near Zeldin’s office in Patchogue, a thousand strong. Knowing Zeldin’s history on this issue, I
knew that he would not be marching, not wanting to explain why he is a pawn of the National Rifle Association and has been since 2015. He wasn’t there. For all we know, he might have been in the company of Trump in Mar-a-Lago. The congressman of ours, who is supposed to support and protect his constituents, was supporting the NRA with his silence. Not surprising, after all he accepted more money from the NRA than any other New York congressperson in the 2016 election cycle with Rep. John Katko (R-Camillus). Obviously, money and power are foremost in Zeldin’s mind and heart. He once told the Long Island Advance that he is his “own man and I make decisions based on my own beliefs.” As such, 2018 is the time for Zeldin to be
uprooted from his seat in Congress and from his plans of one day being president which, by his kowtowing to Trump, is probably his strategy. After all, he follows everything his leader decides. Additionally, he goes along with every NRA blueprint. Your time is up Congressman Zeldin, leave your constituents something better than what you foresee as power. Give them what you promised. Not a false sense of power but a true sense of goodness and helpfulness, not a shrewd schemer with a Machiavellian script but a man of political distinction. There is still time to be a true man who saves us from bullets and a false sense of priorities.

Wisdom, election don’t go together In response to the letter titled, “Trump is no fan of appeasement,” in the March 22 edition of The Village Times Herald, I must congratulate George Altemose on his jawdropping, unconditional loyalty to “chump” in the alternate universe that has been created through this administration. Honestly this letter read like political satire, dripping with head-smacking allegiance to a man who is single-handedly dismantling every aspect of our democratic government, as well as our foreign alliances across the globe. Apparently, though, “we are fortunate indeed that the American people had the wisdom to elect a president” ... I must cease my paraphrasing there in order to retain my dignity. Under no circumstances may
wisdom and “the election” of “chump” be relegated to the same occurrence. Without Russian collusion and an inept, outdated, unnecessary electoral system, the true winner would be in the White House today. Unfortunately, though, this election was trifled with and now we have a lunatic who is trying to deflect from the Mueller investigation by claiming that he and “little rocket man” are going to have a little meeting. And “chumpets” like Mr. Altemose believe that this “president” is protecting us from the big, bad world. Should we also commend “chump” for calling his buddy Putin to congratulate him on an election win based on murder and intimidation? Is the fact that our “president” made this call despite
warnings from his legal team and his Republican cronies not cause for concern? The actions of this White House inhabitant are unprecedented — and not in the good way his supporters believe — and are putting us in a very precarious situation that will simmer until it blows. Our only saving grace is that Mr. Mueller is in the final stretch toward liberation from this horrific administration and hopefully the damage will eventually be undone. With November in sight, those who continue to assuage “chump’s” maniacal behavior will be voted out, allowing for a path to resurrection of our democracy and a sense of sanity in Washington, D.C.

Encouraging praising, not judging Praising a brave Parkland student is the right thing to do, and I almost thought Elio Zappulla was coming around to reason in his letter, “Praising a brave Parkland student,” in the March 22 edition of The Village Times Herald. Until, that is, he wrote that he wanted us to attentively note that this brave student is of a minority group. What on earth does that have to do with his brave actions? “Sadly, Latinos, along with other groups, are often victims in our country of senseless prejudice,” he wrote.
Which, of course, Elio just had to mention. So clearly, only certain people have the ability to judge — yeah, I like that too, “judge” — from criteria derived “almost exclusively from what the individual has done, or said or written.” And judging by “race, religion, ethnic origin, etc.,” is “alas how un-American.” Sarcasm follows: I’m glad Elio pointed this out to us dumb, ignorant, stupid, un-American idiots. Who do you suppose he is referring to? Can you say basket of deplorables?
I am saddened to see that Elio feels he is better than those of us whom he’s so astutely categorized as the group with senseless prejudice — how ironic. He should stop acting like a 10-year-old kid. His comments are sometimes entertaining, but I’ve stopped being amused by them because I realize that he actually believes them. Just give it a rest.

Standing tall on the volleyball court
I
looked around the packed Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia this past weekend. Let’s face it, I and — more importantly — my genes, fell short. It’s not necessarily a character flaw, but it’s not exactly the kind of advantage I’d want to give my children. There I was, cheering on my vertically challenged daughter in a game where height matters. Despite her stature, she has developed a royal passion for volleyball. The perpetual smile By Daniel Dunaief that crosses her face when she steps across the lines makes it all worthwhile, despite the money, the effort, the expense, the endless attempts to get the stink out of her knee pads — and the driving through horrific traffic.

She couldn’t be happier than when she’s throwing her small body around the floor, trying to get to some giant’s smash that seemed only a moment earlier out of her reach. When you have children, you want them to find their way, to develop outlets that they find rewarding and to contribute to something bigger than they are. Sports, I know, doesn’t cure disease. And yet, somehow, it’s become part of the American way, with people flying, driving and caravanning from all over the country to play in competitive tournaments where, if they succeed, they can get enough points to make it to nationals. So, there we were, listening to whistle after whistle at this volleyball attention-deficit-disorder factory when it occurred to me how my genes did my daughter no great favors. Many of the fathers towered over me. If I lived in a land where the food were placed near the ceiling, I and my offspring would starve. My mother played volleyball when she was younger. She was tallish for
her generation. I played volleyball as well, although not nearly at the competitive level that has taken my daughter to places around the area, including Penn State. While my daughter is involved in numerous activities inside and outside school, it is volleyball that tops the list. When we go on vacation anywhere, the first thing she looks for is a place to play volleyball. As I watched her warm up for the third match of the day, I chatted with some of the parents from Virginia, Texas and Arizona that we met this past weekend. After some pleasantries about the event, the conversation inevitably turned toward the identity of our daughters. I could see the satisfaction they felt at pointing out their children from across the convention center floor. “My daughter is the one ducking her head down to walk under the exit sign over there.” “My daughter? She’s just a hair over 6 feet tall, but she’s still growing. How about you?” I’d smile sheepishly. “My daughter
is in the middle of her teammates over there.” “Where?” they’d ask politely. “She’s No. 9.” They’d squint into the group. Just then, my daughter would laugh her way to the outside of a circle of girls that looked like a group of gnats diving in and out of the center of a circle of joy. Then again, as I watched her throw herself across the floor, I thought about the match between her personality and the role she plays in this sport. Sure, it’d be easier for her to stand out if she were taller. But, given her need to defy expectations, she’d probably want to be a jockey if she were 6 feet tall. As the weekend came to a close, I asked her if she wished she could play volleyball every day. “Of course,” she said. “Can you imagine having a job one day that made you feel that way?” I asked. “Yeah,” she smiled, trying to imagine a job that fits her interests as well as volleyball.
tion. The actual procedure takes only about 30-45 minutes, but between the prep at the office and the recovery, it’s a two-to-four hour deal. The first time I had this test, I wanted to be awake to see the inside of the intestine, which is actually quite beautiful. It looks like a braid, as much more surface area can effectively fit into a small area. Tiny red and blue blood vessels crisscross the sides. Of course in order to see all this clearly, the intestine must first be totally cleaned out, which is probably the less pleasant part of the whole deal. Some fasting is involved, anything red, like a tomato, or a seed or nut that might block the view, is to be avoided, and in the last 12 hours before the test, a liquid laxative that spikes 64 ounces of Gatorade is ingested. I was advised to wear loose and comfortable clothing and to leave cash and jewelry at home. Upon arrival, I was given two of those infamous hospital gowns, one to face front and the other the rear. My clothes were secured in a locker, and after a thorough history was unhurriedly taken, the nurse placed an
intravenous (IV) line into my arm. After my first experience, I chose to be fully sedated this time. I was given the good news, that all was well, when I awoke. As a result of the sedation, however, I could not just get up and drive myself home but needed to be accompanied by a companion. In my case it was my son, who could steer me through the hallway and into the car, then drive me home. Shortly after I arrived back in the kitchen, I realized I was ravenous and began refilling my intestine. There is a mild bit of bloating after the test as a result of the air that was added, but that is not particularly uncomfortable and disappears within hours. I was advised not to drive a car, operate any machinery or power tools (unlikely), drink any alcoholic beverages or make any important decisions until the following day. There are other forms of the colonoscopy that are somewhat less invasive, but my understanding is that this variant is the most thorough and therefore the most desirable. As for the silver lining? I did appear to lose a couple of pounds, at least for now.

t was five years since I had a colonoscopy, so I made an appointment to repeat the procedure. It was not a date on the calendar I was looking forward to. I understand the importance of this test for me, so I did what I had to do. My dad died of intestinal cancer, as did several of his siblings, so the family warning is clear. Had this test been available at the time he was stricken, and his cancer discovered, I have little doubt that my dad, robust and By Leah S. stantial reductions in the colorectal cancer burden.” So what is a colonoscopy? I write to explain the test in the hopes of encouraging any readers who might be postponing and avoiding that appointment to take care of that little task once they turn 50. It is my understanding that in most cases, health insurance will cover the costs, which in itself is evidence of the importance of the test. And the experience is not so awful. In fact there is, so to speak, a silver lining, but more about that later. Here are the details. A flexible tube, called a colonoscope, with a video camera on the end that is connected to a large screen in the room, is inserted through the rectum and allows the gastroenterologist to examine the inside of the large intestine. The physician then searches for any abnormalities such as polyps, which can turn into cancer, and usually removes them. The scope rides on a cushion of air that is provided, kind of like a maglev train moves along smoothly without touching the ground through magnetic levita-

Port Jefferson’s girls lacrosse team was able to close the gap three times, but the Royals let the game slip away from them in a 16-3 loss to East Islip. As rain and wind amped up right at the start of the April 3 game, so did East Islip. The Redmen took advantage of the young Port Jeff team not being used to competing in the conditions, and found themselves up 2-0 just three minutes into the action. Port Jeff’s Holly D’Accordo took matters into her own hands by charging to the cage for a score that cut the deficit in half at the 19-minute mark, but East Islip got right back to it. The Redmen won the majority of the faceoffs and scored on nearly every possession. In two minutes East Islip scored two more goals, and once again the Royals broke the streak. This time, Kylie Johnston circled around the back of the cage and scored up high on the right side to bring the score to 4-2. Instead of giving their opponent another chance to re-extend the lead, Port Jeff made a move to tie. High school track grant Greater Long Island Running Club, of Plainview, will be awarding at least one $5,000 grant to a Long Island public high school track and field program this year. Selection of the winning high school(s) will be based on: the need of the school; the purpose for which the grant would be used; the benefit to the program and the studentathletes who are part of the program; and the benefit to the community of which the high school is a part. In 2016, the running club awarded a $5,000 grant to Brentwood High School to help reinstitute and revitalize the school’s cross country program, which had not been
offered since 2010 because of lack of funding. In 2017, to help Central Islip High School kids afford running shoes, the club brought the entire boys and girls teams into Sayville Running Company for shoes. “High school runners represent the future of our sport,” said Linda Ottaviano, the running club’s executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to help deserving high school programs, high school athletes and the communities that they are a part of.” Applications can be obtained by calling the running club office at 516-349-7646 or emailing info@glirc.org. Under Armour lacrosse tryouts If you want to rep your region at this year’s Under Armour Underclass tournament, tryout registration is now open. The 2018 tournament will again feature two divisions in each region — the Command Division and Highlight Division. Command will showcase players from the 2021 and 2022 high school graduation years, while the Highlight will feature the 2019 and 2020 players. Each division will compete within itself at the tryouts and main event. This year will see the addition of the CONNY (Connecticut & New York) region to the Underclass tryouts and tournament. Other regions represented include Baltimore, Long Island, the Midwest, Philadelphia, New England, New Jersey, South, Southwest, Upstate New York, Washington, D.C. and the West.
The regional teams will be selected via tryouts during the months of May and June. Each player must register for their geographic region and be judged by a panel of sources, including coaching experts from that region. Players will be chosen based on position and performance at that day’s tryout. Once selected, the Underclass teams will travel to Townson University in Baltimore, Maryland, and compete in the tournament June 28–July 1. Each team will battle in a pool play at the Under Armour All-AmericaLacrosse Weekend to be crowned the nation’s elite team. College coaches from DI, DII and DIII lacrosse programs will be invited to attend both the regional tryouts, as well as the games in Baltimore.
