Community committee selected projects

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Comsewogue School District is going to ask taxpayers for a little more when they head to the polls in May. The board of education approved a resolution with a unanimous vote at its March 5 meeting to officially add a referendum on a $32 million spending plan recommended by the district’s Facilities Committee in February. The list of slated upgrades and improvements is more than 100 items long and addresses areas in each of Comsewogue’s six buildings. If passed, the money would go toward improving health and safety, infrastructure, academics, arts and athletics.

“The proposed facility improvements preserve the integrity of the school buildings, address repairs, improve instructional resources for all and upgrade athletic facilities,” district administration said in a statement.

The list of areas in need of improvement was the byproduct of several meetings and discussions by the committee, a group of 21 professionals from across the Comsewogue community including members of the board, administrators, architects, engineers, former teachers and civic association members. The group was assembled in early January and had been tasked with presenting recommendations to the board.

“I just want to say thank you to the Facilities Committee that spent a lot of time going through our buildings,” board

president John Swenning said during the meeting. “This bond was brought to us from the community members. They found what they felt needs to be addressed and they came and presented it to the board. We’re going to accept it just as the committee has submitted it to us.”

Some of the projects include required upgrades to achieve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; repairing parking lots and sidewalks; adding security vestibules at all of the district buildings; fixes to exterior and interior building infrastructure; improving athletic fields and facilities; and kitchen upgrades. If approved by voters, the bond would have a 15-year life with about $3 million in interest. Some of the higher-priced projects included in the committee’s recommendation are: a new roof with solar panels at Terryville Road Elementary School; interior work at John F. Kennedy Middle School, including some classroom and hallway renovations; and upgrades to the high school concession stand building. If passed, the average taxpayer would see an increase of about $120 annually to their school tax bill, based on conservative state aid estimates, which won’t be known until the spring.

“We’ve really touched everywhere that your child could be, from safety in the parking lots and curbs, to every elementary classroom getting a face-lift,” said Stephanie Jaklitsch, a former teacher in the district who also has children attending Comsewogue schools. Jaklitsch is a member of the Facilities Committee and was among the contingent who presented recommendations to the board Feb. 12.

“Our students are going to see changes all the way through their education.”

The bond vote will be held at the same place and time as the annual operating budget vote and school board trustee elections. Polls will be open at Comsewogue High School May 15 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The district has suggested it will hold informational meetings going forward to get the community up to speed on the contents of the bond.

The gun control debate in the United States has been fully underway seemingly for decades. Following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Feb. 14 that left 17 people dead, the debate has taken on a different tone, and thanks to the activism of survivors, many of whom are high school students, the conversation hasn’t yet retreated to the back burner even a few news cycles removed from the shooting. In fact, the MSD students have ensured their cause will be garnering attention through at least April 20.

Two nationwide student walkouts have been planned and are being promoted on social media.

On March 14, the group Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators and parents to walk out of schools for 17 minutes, in honor of the 17 Parkland victims, beginning at 10 a.m. The purpose of the protest, according to a website promoting it, is to shine a light on Congress’ “inaction to do more than Tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods.” The walkout is being promoted on social media using the hashtag #ENOUGH. On April 20, a similar protest is being

planned to coincide with the anniversary of the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. The organizers of this event, simply called National School Walkout, are also calling for those in school buildings to stand up and exit at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes of silence, followed by an “open mic” session in which students will be encouraged to voice opinions. The organizers of this walkout envision a day-long event concluding at the end of the school day.

“We’re protesting the violence in schools and the lack of change that has occurred to stop that,” the website created for the event says. “This issue needs constant attention if we hope to change anything, so multiple events on multiple days is a productive way to help fight for our cause, a safer country.”

Local school districts and students are addressing if or how the marches might play out here, with logistics and safety being of the utmost concern for administrators.

In Port Jefferson School District, administration is taking a hands-on approach in handling a potential protest.

Superintendent Paul Casciano said the district’s principals are working with students and teachers to finalize plans.

“We want students who choose to be involved to have a focus for their efforts so the day and time will be meaningful,” he said. He added that when plans are established the district will make them public to ensure parents are informed about what might take place.

Ben Zaltsman, student body president at Port Jefferson High School, shared details about plans for protest, which will take on a tone meant to honor victims rather than a political message. He said initially students expressed a desire to walk out among themselves, but that administration found out and was concerned about safety hazards associated with leaving the building.

Instead of a walkout, the district and student government got together to formulate a plan to commemorate the day and participate in the national movement.

Zaltsman, who’s heading to Rice University in the fall, said he and the rest of the high school’s student government met with administration and agreed on a 17-minute ceremony in the auditorium March 14.

“The April one seems like it’s more political — this is to honor and remember Parkland victims,” Zaltsman said of the two rallies. He said he’s not sure how many students might participate in the voluntary demonstration, which will take place during fourth period, but he expects it will be many.

He also said it’s possible students will decide to walkout on their own anyway, but that he hadn’t heard of anyone planning to do so.

“My mom said she knew I was already participating and I have a younger brother who is expected to participate too,” Zaltsman said when asked if he’d discussed walking out with his parents. “Something like this is not disruptive. I don’t think it’s political.”

Comsewogue School District Deputy Superintendent Jennifer Quinn said in an email students were working on organizing a demonstration, though the district did not provide specifics in time for print.

Parents in the district have strong opinions on the idea of their kids participating in a political protest during school hours in a discussion on a Facebook page comprised of Comsewogue community members.

“Instead of walking out and protesting, walk into the cafeteria and talk to kids you normally wouldn’t,” poster Caitlin Mae, a district employee, said while expressing skepticism that a walkout would accomplish much. “Befriend those who don’t

have friends. Scold those students who encourage bullying.”

Jessica Glass, the mother of a junior at the high school, said she had discussed the possibility of walking out with her daughter.

“She feels very strongly about reform and is interested in all the aspects of how to bring it about,” she said. “Is gun reform the answer? Is mental health awareness the answer? Is more teacher/parent awareness of students the answer? Is a walk out the best idea? She doesn’t have the answer, but she feels that students in a movement would bring awareness to an issue on a higher level than the awareness is now. That’s what’s important to her, raising awareness in many ways for change.”

Several others said they viewed students walking out of school at a set date and time as a security concern in and of itself.

“We are all worried about security, I don’t think a walkout is such a good idea,” Edward Garboski said. “By doing so we are allowing our kids to become perfect targets.

I would hope our parents see the same thing I see. My kids will not walk out of school.”

Others applauded the idea of students being politically and civically engaged.

“I would be proud of my kids if they had strong views and chose to express themselves in this way,” Rachel Begley said.

“They don’t have a vote, so this is one way of making themselves seen and heard.”

While the federal government deals with the political gridlock long associated with gun control, New York is working on action to at least improve safety in the short term, though not to address gun laws.

“Every New Yorker and every American is outraged by the senseless violence that is occurring in schools throughout the country,” state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (R-East Northport) said in a statement Feb. 28. The state Senate approved a series of bills March 5 that include more funding for security cameras, armed police officers or security personnel for districts that want it, panic buttons, active shooter drills, better emergency response plans, hardening of school doors and more. A package of gun control measures proposed

by Senate Democrats was rejected.

Winter Storm Riley knocks out power, causes flooding in Port Jeff

As the calendar creeps into March, the North Shore of Long Island is not quite experiencing spring weather just yet. The entire East Coast of the United States was battered by Winter Storm Riley, which arrived during the morning hours March 2, with a combination of high winds, rapid rainfall and sheer duration causing severe flooding and power outages locally in addition to several casualties elsewhere.

The nor’easter, or a storm along the East Coast of North America with winds over the coastal area blowing from the northeast, according to the National Weather Service, left more than 128,000 PSEG Long Island customers without power over the weekend.

As of 8:30 p.m. March 4, the utility said more than 99 percent of its affected customers had power restored.

“Nor’easters are always a challenge and something that is a concern for us here, particularly when it comes to issues like power outages, flooding and coastal erosion,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) said during the afternoon March 2 while providing an update to residents about the storm. “This storm in particular is a challenge

for a couple of reasons. You are combining here high winds and a significant amount of rainfall. When you have those two things happening at the same time you are creating an environment for power outages, downed power lines, downed trees blocking roadways.

Those are all the things we are monitoring, watching out for.”

Bellone said he had been in touch with the office of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), and the state had offered to provide Suffolk with any additional equipment or personnel it required to effectively deal with Riley.

Much of Suffolk County experienced between 2.5 and 4 inches of rainfall during the storm, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts in Suffolk reached as high as 78 mph in Middle Island, 51 mph in East Northport and 43 mph in Miller Place.

Port Jefferson Village, or Drowned Meadow as it was originally called in past centuries, endured substantial flooding. One Facebook poster joked Main Street in Port Jeff resembled Venice, Italy.

“We have flooding downtown folks and are now at high tide,” the village posted on its official Facebook page at about 11 a.m.

March 2, adding several village streets had to be closed due to flooding. “We will keep you posted. Stay safe!”

Incidents and arrests Feb. 28–March 4 Cannabis oil possession

A 21-year-old man from Centereach driving a 2013 Chevrolet allegedly possessed concentrated cannabis oil, which police discovered during a traffic stop on Dawn Drive in Centereach at about 11:30 p.m. Feb. 28, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Wallet stolen at party

A complainant said he was at a party Feb. 28 at about 10:30 p.m. at a home on West Meadow Lane in Stony Brook where his wallet containing cash and a driver’s license was stolen, according to police.

Hit-and-run

On Jan. 20 at about 1 p.m., a 43-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station driving a 2103 Honda in the parking lot of Port Jeff Bowl on Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station allegedly collided with a parked, unoccupied 2016 Toyota and left the scene without exchanging contact or insurance information, according to police. He was arrested March 1 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Robbery at Kohl’s

A 36-year-old undomiciled man allegedly stole a drone and clothing from Kohl’s on Nesconset Highway in Setauket March 3 at about 8 p.m., according to police.

Police said he was confronted by an employee in the parking lot, and the man allegedly threatened the employee with a large knife. He was arrested March 3 and charged with first-degree robbery and resisting arrest.

Stolen snow blower

A snow blower was stolen from outside of a home on Stewart Circle North in Centereach March 4 at about 2 a.m., according to police.

Fence damaged

The fence around a home on Starfire Drive in Centereach was damaged at about 10 p.m. March 2, according to police.

Tattoo shop break-in

At Irish Jay Tattoo on Route 25A in Miller Place March 3 at about 1 a.m., an unknown person removed the top portion of an exterior window and attempted to enter the building, according to police.

Police said an alarm went off and the suspect fled without gaining entry.

Cable clipped

An iPad was stolen from BJ’s Wholesale Club on Nesconset Highway in Setauket Feb. 19 at about 10 p.m., according to police. A police report was filed March 2.

Unlicensed driving

At about 10 a.m. March 4, a 34-year-old man from Coram was driving a 2007 Nissan on Middle Country Road in Selden allegedly without a valid driver’s license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

POLICE East Setauket man critical after motorcycle crash

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Suffolk County police 4th Squad detectives are investigating a crash that critically injured a motorcyclist in St. James March 5 at approximately 11:30 p.m.

Steven Perrone was operating a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Route 25A, just west of Acorn Road, when the

motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a guardrail.

Perrone, 34, of East Setauket was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is in critical condition. The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-854-8452.

Correction A March 1 police blotter item, entitled “Assault in Port Jeff,” contained incorrect information about the location of the incident. The person left Schafer’s and was allegedly assaulted near Chandler Square. We regret the error.

Winter golf fundraiser

In an effort to give back to the local community, Port Jefferson School District school board president Kathleen Brennan and district administrators recently teamed up to participate in the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson’s Winter Golf Fundraiser.

The cold weekend activity in early February was an opportunity for them to collaborate with other Rotary members through

purposeful action. The proceeds from the event not only encouraged civic engagement but were a way to help benefit local charities.

During its mid-February meeting, the Port Jefferson board of education made a special recognition to members of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School for their collective efforts in having the building named a Reward School by the New York State Education Department, an honor that it has achieved consecutively since the 2012-13 academic year.

During the meeting, board vice president Mark Doyle congratulated the administration, staff and students of the high school for their commitment to educational excellence and outstanding student performance.

“It’s very satisfying to be recognized,” Doyle said. “This follows our Blue Ribbon recognition, which is well-deserved.”

The Blue Ribbon School honor was bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education in September.

The school was one of only 155 schools

across New York state to receive the Reward School recognition this year. The high school annually boasts numerous Advanced Placement Scholars, and National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students, in addition to many athletic, musical, civic and volunteer accomplishments of its students.

The two Port Jefferson School District academically talented students took the qualifying test as juniors and are now among approximately 15,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction. In the next several months, approximately half of those students will be selected to receive a Merit Scholarship award, which is based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.

Both Iwasaki and Than are accomplished and well-rounded students, according to the district. Their finalist designation exemplifies the district’s high level of student achievement and academically rigorous program for all students.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.

Kinetic art project

Fifth-graders in Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District learned about the interconnection of science and art during a recent kinetic art project in the after-school Art Club supervised by Richard Anderson and Meghan Hallock.

After figuring out what materials to use for their sculpture, how to balance it and how it would transform when it moved, each

of the students used their imaginations and some skills for their constructions.

Joined by Karen Levitov, director and curator for the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts, and Stony Brook University art students, the fifth-graders wrote art words and science words and learned their relationship as they each created a piece of artwork that depended on movement for its effect.

Lawmakers, environmental advocates, scientists skewer offshore drilling plan

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM If it wasn’t clear following six hours of Valentine’s Day testimony, the usual suspects were at it once again delivering a unified message against the possibility of offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of the Interior were at Brookhaven Town Hall March 2 to hear public comments from lawmakers across the political spectrum demand the proposed federal plan to expand natural gas and oil drilling along coastal waters be scrapped. The Feb. 14 hearing, which did not feature participation by the Interior, was held in the Suffolk County Legislature building in Hauppauge, an alternative to the federal bureau’s original plan for a single public hearing in Albany that took place the next day.

Long Island lawmakers vehemently pushed back on the single upstate hearing, demanding at least one downstate hearing due to the impact such a plan might have locally.

Though the Interior Department didn’t hear the first batch of testimony on Long Island in February, Assemblyman and Committee on Environmental Conservation Chairman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) said a transcript of the entire meeting would be submitted as written public comment on the proposal. Neither of the two local hearings featured a single speaker in favor of proceeding with offshore drilling off the coast of Long Island.

First District U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) played a vital role in securing the March 2 hearing in his home district, calling the initial one-Albany-hearing plan “unacceptable.”

Zeldin and others reiterated the fact that there currently is no evidence to suggest the resources that would be drilled for exist off the coast of Long Island, in addition to the hazardous impact the plan would have on marine life. The congressman stopped short of joining lawmakers to his political left in calling for investment in renewable sources of energy as opposed to more drilling for oil and gas, though he has voted for such legislation in the past.

“Drilling in the ocean for gas or oil is foolhardy,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said during his remarks. “We should be looking at alternative energy. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue — it’s a

Mount Sinai troop honors first Eagle Scout Within Boy Scout Troop 1776, adults and Scouts alike have always turned to Mount Sinai High School senior James Snider to lead the way. Whether it’s making sure his fellow Scouts have their tents set up and food prepared before monthly camping trips or energizing the troop with a rousing speech in meetings, the 17-year-old, who started as a Cub Scout in first grade, has served as an exemplary take-charge member.

“He’s always been very mature and served as a great teacher,” troop Scoutmaster Greg Muroff said. “His peers naturally gravitate toward him and he has the respect of everybody in the group.”

So it makes sense that Snider recently became the first member of Troop 1776, which formed in 2013, to earn the coveted Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank a Scout can receive, which has been achieved by a small percentage of Scouts since 1912, according to the National Eagle Scout Associations. To become Eagle Scout, not only did he have to earn 21 merit badges — Snider collected a total of 33, including a bronze and gold Eagle palm — but also complete a year-long community service project. After the death of two members of Port Jefferson Emergency Medical Services on Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Mount Sinai in 2016, Snider committed himself to creating a memorial garden and sitting area on the department’s property. Between September 2016 and October 2017, when the garden was made official during a dedication cer-

emony, he installed a stepping stone path, tables, chairs and rose bushes, and built two wooden benches around a small tree on a stretch of empty open space through a donation provided by one of his troop leaders.

“It feels really good, and was definitely worth the time,” Snider said of his project’s impact. “I’m glad I made it to the end of the journey without giving up. I hope to be the example for future troop members.”

His mother, Kim Snider, a Suffolk County correction officer, said her son has already done that.

“A fire has been ignited by James — he’s definitely motivated others through this,” she said. “He’s probably the most determined human being I can possibly imagine.

He always wants to do what’s right for the community and prides himself in leadership. He’s a very quiet boy, but has the ability to change an atmosphere. That’s just him — he naturally has good in his heart.”

Matthew Callen, a Mount Sinai junior and Snider’s scouting peer since fourth grade, said he is among those inspired.

“I really think it has impacted everybody in the troop,” said Callen, of his friend being named the first Eagle Scout from the troop.

“Seeing him achieve Eagle opened my eyes to something I really wanted and gave me a lot of initiative to get focused and achieve this rank myself.”

Brian Callen, the Scout’s father, who is a committee chair member within Troop 1776, said when the idea came up to found the group, designed as a boy-led program that started with 20 members, it was decided to make Snider the second senior pa-

Tracey Farrell, a Rocky Point resident and the president of nonprofits North Shore Drug Awareness and On Kevin’s Wings, knows firsthand the devastation these

opioids cause. Her son, Kevin, died of an overdose in 2012 and her daughter Breanna is currently three years in recovery.

Farrell said because there are so many different chemical makeups of fentanyl, “too often this ties the hands of our law enforcement” to enact stricter penalties.

“My son was one of 83 who passed in Suffolk County in 2012 when fentanyl wasn’t really on the radar, but five years later, that number is over 500 with a very large percentage of those deaths being caused by fentanyl,” she said. “We must take any and all steps possible to get the sale of this drug to impose the maximum sentences and potentially save lives.”

Sal Vetro, a pharmacist at Echo Pharmacy in Miller Place, said this would be a major step in the right direction toward saving lives.

“I think Cuomo’s on the right track,” Vetro said. “We’re trying to fight this epidemic and the people who need fentanyl should have fentanyl, but if it’s being used illegally, sold illegally or causing damage illegally, those people should certainly be punished. We have to stop ignoring the problem, and this is a start.”

Students deserve to be heard

There is no denying the Florida school shooting has reignited a national discussion on appropriate firearm regulations and mental health issues. Amid the uproar, students are organizing in attempt to make their voices heard — and we firmly believe they deserve to be at the forefront of this conversation.

The Women’s March Youth EMPOWER has put out the call for students, teachers, school administrators and parents to participate in a national school walkout Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m. The event calls for students to walk outside of their school building for 17 minutes, one minute for each of victims killed in Parkland, in a unified effort to show students demand action from Congress in passing federal gun regulations.

Commack resident Paul Guttenberg, whose niece Jaime was killed in the Parkland shooting, voiced support for the student walkout.

“It keeps the issue of how high school students feel about gun violence in the news, and will also send the message that our children’s voices do count,” he said. “And the tone-deaf GOP politicians in Congress will be forced to listen to how they feel.”

The reaction of Long Island’s school districts to the walkout wildly varies and, in some cases, is disappointing. We applaud Ward Melville High School Principal Alan Baum for sitting down with student organizers in his district to discuss plans and ensure safety.

If the point of education is to prepare our children for life, and to become civic-minded adults, Baum’s action should serve as an example for other districts.

Brenden Cusack, principal at Huntington High School, has used the walkout as an opportunity to arrange a March 13 forum where students, teachers and the community can engage in respectful dialogue on mass shootings.

It is disappointing that other districts like Rocky Point have issued warnings that administrative action will be taken in response to any student participating in the walkout. The event is an effort to cry out for attention, where the district’s planned moment of silence is just that, silence, and a letter-writing campaign is too easily ignored. This decision by school administrators strangles students’ voices, making someone think twice before expressing an opinion.

Worse are those school officials who have decided to bury their heads in the sand and not publicly address the walkout. Elwood and Harborfields have not yet issued public statements regarding how their districts will handle the event. This leaves both students and parents with numerous unanswered questions. With a little less than a week until walkout day, we strongly encourage school officials to reconsider an open and honest dialogue.

The first step to solving a problem starts with discussion of the issues.

Students have every right to be heard, for it’s their safety at risk.

Superintendents appeal for leadership The murder of 17 students and teachers in the corridors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, by a gunman armed with an AR-15 assault rifle is one more episode in a series of violent acts targeting our nation’s youth. Now, Parkland joins Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech and dozens of other educational settings as the name of a crime scene, not a school. Our heartbreak increases as the list gets longer and longer.

The Parkland tragedy reminds us an American school shooting has taken place, on average, once per week in 2018, and that is only through February.

Addressing this national epidemic demands bold action. Our national response must evolve to be more than just messages of “thoughts and prayers” and hand-wringing about our inability to stop this. The students in Florida want this to be the tipping point; they want this to be the “last mass shooting.” This siren must get our attention.

And this issue should be the one to galvanize our elected officials in Washington, D.C., state capitals and local communities.

By rejecting mass shootings as a “new normal,” the federal government has the chance to seize the grief and the anger of this overwhelming moment and act now. The nation is ready.

New York State passed sensible guns laws in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook massacre in neighboring Connecticut.

This bipartisan measure includes many provisions that our national leaders can use as a model. Assault weapons,

background checks, ammunition sales, mental health screenings and more, it’s all in there.

It wasn’t perfect when it was passed, but through a series of amendments, it’s been improved.

We’re certain that critics can identify several concerns about the law, but there are none that can’t be resolved. Take New York State’s SAFE Act and use it as a template for federal action.

The aftermath of a school shooting has become all too predictable. We need a multifaceted solution that addresses all of the issues that the Parkland students are now so eloquently articulating as a result of witnessing the horrific shooting and losing classmates and teachers to gun violence. It is the only way to make significant progress toward addressing this complex matter.

We have a state law in place that can be used to initiate the essential national conversation, the SAFE Act, so why not use it?

We understand that what we’ve done in New York may be a hard sell elsewhere, but all kids deserve this kind of protection.

We do know that nothing will improve if we do nothing, and that is not an option.

We need such changes to be able to assure students, parents and staff that our schools are safe places. Ensuring that our students receive the highestquality programs and services in a safe, secure environment is the goal of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association. It is a goal that is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.

A recent survey of school superintendents statewide indicates

that more than half of respondents have rising concerns about the needs of our students in nonacademic areas, including health, safety and mental health.

Our members partner with county, town and village police departments, as well as many other non-law-enforcement organizations, understanding that these needs cannot be met without robust cooperation.

Only this type of cooperation will enable us to fully address these problems.

To make progress, we need strong national leadership. We need our leaders to break the patterns that have resulted in inaction time and time again. We need them to be brave and do what we have elected them to do — lead.

We must demand decency and collaboration by all involved. With civility, the availability of adequate resources and exhaustive planning, we can be successful.

This work demands collaboration, compromise, discussion and mutual understanding. To this end, the superintendents association stands ready to help in this effort in any way necessary.

As Americans, we must be capable of more than one thought and one nonnegotiable action plan to address this problem. In doing so, we can meet today’s challenges and achieve our goal of providing a safe, secure environment for all students. Our humanity demands it.

Preparing for retirement More than half of New Yorkers who work in the private sector have no way to save for retirement at work — including 55.9 percent right here in the 4th Assembly District. I want to thank my representative, Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), for co-sponsoring a bill to help change that.

The Secure Choice Retirement Savings Act would establish a state-facilitated retirement savings program that would

be voluntary for employers but would allow companies to offer their employees a savings option if they don’t already. It’s voluntary for employees, too, and requires no contributions from the company or the state.

AARP supports this idea because it’s a win-win-win: employers could offer a valuable benefit; employees are 15 times likelier to save if they can do so on the job; and taxpayers would have less need to fund services

for people who lack sufficient retirement savings.

Now Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has proposed Secure Choice as part of his state budget.

With more than half of all state legislators — in both houses and from both major political parties — sponsoring Secure Choice and with the governor’s budget proposal, it is time to help workers start saving for their future.

A face at war with itself

I

f parts of the body could talk, I wonder what they’d say. To that end, I imagined the following dialogue among mostly facial features.

Teeth: Hey, look at me. Something’s changed. You’re going to like it.

Ears: What? You’re talking again?

Seriously. Can’t you give it a rest, just for a few moments? Here’s a news flash: You don’t have to eat crunchy food all the time. How about eating something soft once in a while?

Teeth: Crunchy food tastes good.

Tongue: Yes, but the ears have

Nose: No, but she smells a lot better than we do. Our armpits leave something to be desired at the end of the day. It’s amazing we’re still married.

Armpit: You wouldn’t smell so great either if you got damp every time the stress level started to rise. Besides, with all that running, nose, I’d think you’d be in better shape.

Nose: Is that supposed to be funny?

Armpit: I’m sorry. I know it’s not your fault. Maybe my stress would be lower if the eyes didn’t spend so much time reading about politics.

Teeth: Wait, guys. Come on, I want to tell you something. You’re going to like it.

Ears: Oh, please. Are you going to tell us that you have a few more thoughts you’d like to share about a way to smile so we look better in selfies? Forget it. Haven’t you heard?

Your daughter said you’re incapable of taking a good selfie. She’s probably right. Selfie’s were made for people much younger than we are. They’re a tool to even out the generational power struggle.

Cheeks: We’re as young as we feel, right?

Eyes: Have you looked in the mirror lately? Cheeks, you’re showing our age.

Cheeks: Wait, what’s wrong with me?

Eyes: Nothing’s wrong. It’s just that gravity seems to have caught up with you.

Chin: Gravity, that’s funny.

Eyes: You haven’t looked in the mirror either, have you chin?

Chin: Why? Eyes: Are you trying to clone yourself?

Nose: Ignore them, cheeks and chin. They’re just jealous.

Eyes: Jealous? What? Let’s just say that the new hairs coming out of you, my little nose friend, aren’t winning admirers.

Nose: Hairs? Where?

Ears: Can we keep it down? I’m trying to enjoy the few moments of silence before the phone rings or someone else has to share thoughts about a better way to do something.

Eyes: We noticed the extra hairs growing on you, too, ears.

Ears: You’re in a bad mood today,

eyes. What’s wrong?

Eyes: Nothing.

Teeth: No, you can tell us.

Eyes: I need to wear close glasses for the computer and distance glasses for driving. I hate having two pairs and it takes me a minute to adjust.

Nose: Tell me about it. The computer glasses are pinching me.

Ears: Yeah, and they’re irritating me, too.

Teeth: Come on. I have something to say.

Ears; Of course you do. That’s all you do. Blah, blah, blah. Would it hurt you to listen?

Teeth: I am part of the mouth, you know. That’s what I do.

Ears: Yes, but silence can be good for all of us, you know?

Eyes: OK, tell us this important news that you’re so eager to share.

Teeth: After all these years, my teeth are straight. See? My smile isn’t crooked anymore.

Eyes: Let me see.

Teeth: Aah. Eyes: Hmm, they are straighter.

What do you know? Now, what can you do about your breath?

also occurred to us that no one has had to get up early to walk the dog on the weekends. We haven’t had to go out in the wind and rain, or the cold and dark for that last walk of the night. There were no elaborate plans that needed to be made for dog care when we left for vacation or a weekend away from home. We didn’t need to dash to the vet for an emerging “hot spot” or note the time on the calendar for a rabies shot. There has not been any sudden despoiling on the most treasured rug in the house.

And we have not had to deal with the frantic teething that puts clothing and window sills at risk as a new puppy settles in.

We have thought briefly of different possibilities. We have a friend who has a golden retriever puppy named Chewy with almost identical coloring and inquisitiveness as Teddy, and we have offered our services as sometime babysitters. So far we have done so once. After loving up the pup, the rest was just work and it wasn’t the same.

Substitute dogs are like substitute

teachers: Happy to have them come and happy to see them go.

It has been 45 years since I have been without a dog in the house, and there is a void that won’t go away. One of my sons and daughters-in-law are thinking of getting a dog. If so, they would come often to visit and bring the dog. Would that replace what is missing? I have my doubts. That would just mean more work without the primary connection.

So profound is that connection that the latest trend in employee benefits for large corporations is “pawternity leave.” That means a couple of days paid time off for an employee to bond with a new four-legged family member or to mourn the death of a beloved pet. Some companies are even encouraging their staffers to bring their pets with them to the office when at work.

So, will we get another dog? There have been four dogs sequentially in my life already, and there is certainly room for more. I just don’t know if l can bear the loss of yet another. As my mother used to say, “We’ll see.”

Will we get yet another dog?

eople sometimes ask me if I am going to get another dog. Even people I don’t really know have stopped me in the supermarket or the post office to ask. They know about my dog, Teddy, since I have written about him, described his antics and, at the end, the pain of losing him.

Those who ask probably have pets of their own, and they understand the deep relationship we humans have with our

By Leah S. Dunaief animals. They also know what is coming for them because beloved pets die. We are lucky if they keep us company on our journey through life for a decade and a half. And we mourn them as we would mourn the death of any beloved family member.

Between you and me

Initially we wouldn’t consider replacing him. Every night, when we arrived home and opened the front door there was no four-legged furry bundle fishtailing with joy to welcome us.

The house was just dark and empty.

We needed time to grieve. “Just get another dog,” said those who didn’t understand that dogs are not like widgets, one replaceable with another.

So we went through the spring and didn’t see him sniffing at the crocuses and daffodils as if in wonder at how they had gotten there. After all, they hadn’t been there yesterday. In summer, he wasn’t here to dash across the sand and fling himself into the water for an instant cool-down. As the fall came and the beach grass turned russet and gold, he did not run happily along the beach with us, perfectly camouflaged by nature’s backdrop.

And this winter, with the first snow, he was not here to roll ecstatically on his back and make snow angels on the front lawn.

It’s coming up on a year now since we have been without a dog. It has

Jaime Glas made a memory to last a lifetime last week.

The Comsewogue School District teacher and Hauppauge resident took her family to the Harlem Wizards basketball game against faculty at Smithtown West High School March 1 expecting to enjoy it from the bleachers, but the Wizards had other ideas. Wizard Big J plucked Glas from the crowd to meet him on the dance floor, and after immediate terror, turned lemons into lemonade as she showed him her moves.

“I was mortified,” said Glas, laughing.

“As a teacher, that’s what we do every day — we just kind of roll with it.”

The famed basketball team brought its tricks, hoops and alley oops to Smithtown West to dazzle a 600-plus crowd while raising money for the Distributive Education Clubs of America club.

“They put on a great show,” said DECA club advisor Cindy Wood, a business teacher at West. “The kids and the parents are great and we get everyone from all different schools right here in our district. We usually don’t get that, so it’s a really nice way to bring everyone together.”

Wood was one of many educators to excel out on the court as the Bulls battled against Rocket, Big J, The Artist, Jet and La Fiesta. Tom Vulin, who usually fights from the sidelines as head coach of Smithtown East’s girls basketball team, showed his 3-point prowess to earn him a “shooter” shout out from play-by-play announcer D.J. Swiv every time the ball touched his hands.

Behind Vulin and Wood was Accompsett Elementary School teacher Ed Vinas, who was brought out on the court for a different reason after receiving an email from event organizer Denise Massimo.

“When my daughter found out about it, she talked me into coming out tonight, so it’s become a family affair,” Vinas said.

“I’ve seen them a couple of times and they put on a good show.”

On March 3, senior Gabby Griffin and her Section XI relay team placed third in the intersectional relay at the state championship at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, finishing in 10 minutes, 34.71 seconds. She completed her first leg of the race in 3:06.082.

The same day, at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, sophomore swimmer Jake Vecchio took fifth place in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 51.15. His points helped Section XI finish the meet on top with 764.5 overall points.

Warriors battle at states

Twins honored by Port Jeff board of education Port Jefferson seniors and twin brothers Jack and Joey Collins were recognized by the board of education for their contributions to the district’s athletic program.

The brothers were praised for each of their individual commitments to their teams, character, leadership and ability to overcome challenges that stand in the way of success.

Jack, the school’s quarterback was named All-County and third team All-State; set school records in completions (143), passing yards (2261, second in Suffolk County) and touchdown passes (18); and was the first Port Jefferson football player to be named the Most Valuable Player in Suffolk County Division IV. He is looking at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute

of Technology or Case Western Reserve University to continue his football career.

Joey’s most recent wrestling highlight was at the annual Bob Armstrong Memorial Cup, where he pinned a Riverhead opponent.

“Jack and Joey have changed the way many of their peers, teammates and teachers view the world,” Turner said. “Their character, commitment and dedication to Port Jeff athletics and their community is without equal.”

Head wrestling coach Mike Maletta said Joey Collins lights up the wrestling room when he enters.

“He has been a member of PJ Nation for four years now, and has inspired each and every athlete on our team,” Maletta said. “He has dared to wrestle and pursue success.”
