Narcan now available for low cost at pharmacies

By Kyle Barr The opioid crisis on Long Island has left devastation in its wake, and as opioidrelated deaths rise every year, New York State Department of Health has created an additional, more affordable way to combat it. To deal with the rash of overdoses as a result of addiction, the state has made it easier for people with prescription insurance to afford Naloxone, a common overdose reversal medication.

On Aug. 7, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced starting Aug. 9 that people with prescription health insurance coverage would be able to receive Naloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, for a copay of up to $40. New York is the first state to offer the drug for such a low cost in pharmacies.

“The vast majority of folks who have health insurance with prescription coverage will be able to receive Naloxone through this program for free,” said Ben Rosen, a spokesperson for the state department of health.

Before the change, the average shelf cost of Narcan, which is administered nasally, was $125 without prescription with an average national copay of $10. People on Medicaid and Medicare paid between $1 and $3, Rosen said.

This action by the state comes at a critical time. More than 300 people from Suffolk County died from opioid-related overdoses in 2016, according to county medical examiner records. On Aug. 10, President Donald Trump (R) declared the opioid issue a national emergency, meaning that there is now more pressure on Congress to pass legislation to deal with the crisis, as well as a push to supply more funds to states, police departments and health services to help address the problem.

100 pharmacies in Suffolk County. This includes major pharmacies like CVS Health, Walgreens and Rite Aid, but also includes a few local pharmacies that already participate in the state AIDS Drug Assistance Program, Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage program and Medicaid, according to Kathy Febraio, the executive director of the Pharmacists Society of the

State of New York, a nonprofit pharmacists advocacy group.

The program is only available for people who either have Medicare, Medicaid or health insurance with prescription coverage.

Otherwise, officials said that those who lack insurance and need access can get it through a number of free Narcan training courses.

Town St. James family battling autism given golden gift

By Sara-Megan WalSh Sara@tBrneWSpaperS.coM A St. James family is looking ahead to brighter days raising their son with autism after receiving a generous donation.

The Cusumano family received an extensive 84-panel solar system donated by SUNation Solar Systems and its not-forprofit SUNation Cares, which will supply free electricity for life. The funds saved will be used to help their 14-year-old son Dylan attend weekly equine therapy sessions at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in Islandia.

“When we can all come together as a team it makes a tremendous difference in people’s lives, especially people like the Cusumanos who are most deserving to reap the benefits and tremendous rewards that were generously donated,” said Lisa Gatti, founder and executive director of Pal-O-Mine.

The solar panels donated to the family were the end result of positive community building by several local companies.

Gatti said she was introduced to Scott Maskin, CEO and co-founder of SUNation, a Ronkonkoma-based solar panel company, through Empire National Bank, where they are both customers. Maskin said as he learned firsthand about the nonprofit work done by Pal-O-Mine to benefit children with disabilities, he asked Gatti if there was a family he could step in to help. That’s when the Cusumanos were nominated.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity and I think we were stunned because we feel there are so many needy families on Long Island,” said Amy Cusumano, Dylan’s mother. “The gift of solar panels lessens our load or burden so the money we are using to pay an electric bill, we now get to decide if we can increase his horse time or do something else for the boys.”

Dylan, the oldest of the Cusumano’s five sons, started horseback riding at Pal-O-Mine at age 5 due to the therapeutic benefits.

Equine therapy provides children with disabilities with positive vestibular, or inner ear, input, can improve speech and language skills, help with walking and can increase fine and gross motor skills, according to Gatti. “[Dylan] didn’t speak when he came to Pal-O-Mine,” she said. “One of his first words was ‘walk.’ I remember Ms. Cusumano being shocked he began to speak while he was riding.”

Despite seeing improvement, Amy Cusumano said she was forced to discontinue her son’s horseback riding lessons for a few years when financial hardship struck. She said it was heartbreaking.

“When he’s on the horse, he’s so at peace, he’s so totally Dylan,” his mother said. “So when we can give him that half an hour a week where he can just enjoy himself and have some fun, it’s money well spent.”

Dylan’s individually tailored plan through Pal-O-Mine has him riding Ella, a 12-year-old palomino haflinger, once a week. His mother

said Dylan frequently requests to go see his horse and cares for her. Horseback riding is motivating to him, and gives Dylan a sense of empowerment and independence, according to Cusumano.

“Autism is not the primary thing we are thinking about,” she said. “Maybe we’re thinking about how amazing he is or that he can ride a horse.”

Town Long Islanders are lending a helping hand to Houston

by Desirée Keegan, alex PetrosKi anD Kevin reDDing Hurricane Harvey ripped through the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern coast of Texas as a Category 4 storm, dumping historic floodwaters on the region and leaving hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes, injured or worse.

About 1,700 miles away several efforts to raise money and accumulate food and supplies for Page a22 those affected sprung up across the North Shore this past week into the weekend. Business owners, nonprofits, citizens and even kids pitched in to try to help in the early stages of getting victims back on their feet.

Wading River

The New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing, based in Westhampton Beach, traveled to Texas to help with rescues.

The group rescued nearly 300 people by boat and helicopter as of Aug. 29, military officials said, though the number has grown substantially since then.

Wading River’s Ryan Dush, a 32-year-old staff sergeant, was one of about 140 members of the 106th Rescue Wing to help in Texas.

Dush’s rescues included an airlift of an extended family of nine, including a 1-monthold child. The family members, three of whom were adults, were inside of a partially submerged pickup truck. Dush led the group members to the roof, where he strapped them into harnesses that hoisted them 60 feet up to the helicopter.

According to Capt. Michael O’Hagan, the helicopter was already filled to capacity when the a male was spotted waving for help. It turned out to be the family of nine.

Dush can be seen in a video on the 106th Rescue Wing’s YouTube channel holding the infant as he was pulled back up to the helicopter.

It hit home for Dush, because he’s the father of a 1-year-old girl.

“It was definitely an emotional rescue, going after an infant that was that small,” Dush told CNN. “I rescued another infant today.

It’s an amazing feeling to come out and help people in their time of need.”

In multiple YouTube videos on the channel and elsewhere, family members can be seen smiling and waving to Dush, mouthing “thank

you” as they are dropped off at the George R. Brown Convention Center in West Houston, which is serving as a shelter.

“We are very well-acquainted with this type of a disaster, having lived through Hurricane Sandy only five years ago,” O’Hagan said. “We remember that in our time of need others came from around the nation to help us out, so we’re happy to do so. This is the very definition of what we do as the Air National Guard — these things we do so that others may live.”

Port Jefferson

In October it will be 40 years that Joseph Higgins has owned Tara Inn pub on Main Street in upper Port. When Higgins heard of the devastation in Houston and the surrounding region as a result of Hurricane Harvey, he said it resonated with him in a way that left him feeling like action was required. The pub owner decided to hold a benefit Sept. 4, Labor Day, to raise money for people affected by the massive storm. In addition to the sale of raffle tickets and Harvey relief T-shirts donated by Port Jefferson Sporting Goods, Higgins pledged to donate 100 percent of the bar’s food and beverage sales from the day to a group providing aid for victims in the region.

Tara Inn amassed more than $15,200 in sales and donations during the course of the day, which will be donated to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which was created to honor the memory of Siller, who was a firefighter killed in the line of duty Sept. 11, 2001. The organization is asking for donations to help Harvey victims on its website.

“Forty years ago I had eight kids, my wife and I didn’t have two nickels to rub together, and I said, ‘God, help me raise these kids,’ and he did,” the 86-year-old Higgins said during the event, while seated near the pub’s front door with a container for additional donations. “And I can’t thank God enough for all he has given me and that’s why we give back.

I’ve had a great life, and I like to give back.”

Bubba Davis, a Port Jefferson Village resident for 78 years, was among those in attendance for the fundraiser at Tara Inn. “This family here, they’ve always done that — they’re fantastic people,” Davis said.

In an effort dubbed “Help Us Help Texas,” volunteer firefighters collected hundreds of items — including cases of water, pet food, nonperishable foods, diapers and paper towels — from members of the community, who dropped the goods off to the firehouse on Mount Sinai-Coram Road Sept. 2 and 3.

As residents pulled into the parking lot with vehicles full of much-needed supplies for those suffering in the wake of the storm, members from junior firefighters to chiefs helped carry them in, while others got to work boxing them up to be delivered to shelters in Houston.

“It’s so encouraging that everybody can get together and do what needs to be done under these types of circumstances,” said safety officer Dan Desmond, who has been a volunteer with the Mount Sinai department for 30 years.

Desmond said he wasn’t surprised to see so many people stopping by to help.

“There’s nothing stronger than the bond that Long Islanders have,” he said. “Whether it’s for somebody in Alaska or down in Texas, if somebody needs help, Long Island’s going to come together.”

Adam Thomas, an 11-year volunteer who organized the event, said he immediately sprung into action because he has friends who serve as firemen near Houston.Through Facebook, emails, phone calls and word of mouth, Thomas promoted the donation drive.

With a direct contact on the scene in Houston, Thomas was also able to compile a specific list of supplies for residents to contribute.

Rather than clothing or cash, the most crucial supplies included batteries, flashlights, cleaning supplies, mops, hygiene products, masks, goggles and bug spray.

“My friends down there, they’ve been working all night, and sent me a text saying, ‘We need mosquito sprays’ because they’re getting slaughtered by them — they have fire ants all over the place too,” Thomas said.

As another car full of items pulled in, Thomas said the initiative felt wonderful.

“It’s not just me doing it, it’s everybody that’s helping,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

The lieutenant said the event was evi-

dence of social media being put to good use.

“I’m not the biggest fan of social media, but in instances like this, I think it’s when it really is tremendous,” Pobjecky said.

As one resident dropped off water, baby wipes, cat food and paper towels, she said of her donations: “It’s the least we can do, right?”

Middle Country

Every local legislator is also showing support for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The Suffolk County Legislature, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Lions Club, is holding an ongoing food and school supplies drive, which kicked off Sept. 6 at the Suffolk County Legislature building at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown. All donations will be sent to Houston.

“After Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of Long Island, there was an outpouring of supplies and donations from across the United States,” Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said. “As part of this great nation, we have to come together to support each other in times of need. It is imperative that we pool our resources to aid those affected by this hurricane during these difficult time.”

Donations can also be dropped off at Anker’s office, located at 620 Route 25A Suite B in Mount Sinai.

While county Legislator and Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) likes the idea of additional access to Narcan, he is skeptical about whether those who get it know how to properly administer it. “You don’t need a Ph.D. to know how to use it, but there is some training that would help people be more comfortable, such as how to properly use it in an emergency situation and how to store it so that it is accessible while making sure children can’t get their hands on it,” he said. “Unfortunately the epidemic is so widespread.

Sunshine State fugitive said though the business has not yet received many calls for Narcan, the state requires pharmacists to demonstrate how to use it.

“You have to counsel the patient and show them how to use it,” she said. “We were shown videos, we were given kits to practice on before we were certified to do it. I feel like it’s a good thing that they’re doing it.”

The county currently provides numerous Narcan training courses for locals, where they receive training and free supplies of the life-saving drug. County Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said that she will be co-hosting a free Narcan training course Oct. 5 at Rocky Point High School with support from the North Shore Youth Council.

“They absolutely need to be trained,” she said. “Narcan is almost a miracle drug — it brings people back from death. However, people need to know what they’re doing so that it is administered correctly.”

On Sept. 3, a 28-year-old man from Coram, who was a fugitive from justice from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in Florida related to his dealings with stolen property, was arrested at a business on Main Street in Port Jefferson, according to police.

At about 5 p.m. Sept. 2, a 31-year-old woman from East Patchogue possessed heroin and a hypodermic needle in her handbag while at the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road station, according to police. She also had an active warrant for her arrest issued by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, police said. When police tried to handcuff her, she struggled and twisted, resisting officers’ demands, police said. She was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.

Suspended in time

A 35-year-old woman from Port Jefferson Station was driving a 1999 Chevrolet on Route 25 near the intersection of Dawn Drive in Centereach at about 11 a.m. Aug. 30 when she was pulled over for a traffic stop, according to police. Police discovered she was driving with a license that was presently suspended and had been suspended on at least three prior occasions. She was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

At a shopping center on Portion Road in Farmingville, a 31-year-old man from Ronkonkoma driving a 2010 Honda collided with a parked 2010 Hyundai at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 20, causing property damage, and fled the scene, according to police. He was arrested Sept. 4 in Selden and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

A 27-year-old man from Port Jefferson stole Redbull energy drink cans from Target on Pond Path in Setauket at about 8:30 p.m.

June 16, according to police. He was arrested in Selden Sept. 4, and police discovered he also stole assorted tank tops from Victoria’s Secret in the Smith Haven Mall at about 12:30 p.m. May 17, and later fled the scene from the mall in a 2006 Mazda after colliding with a 2003 Subaru, police said. He was arrested Sept. 4 in Selden and charged with two counts of petit larceny and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

At about noon Sept. 2, a 19-year-old man from Shirley was involved in a car crash while driving a 2016 Jeep on Route 25 near the intersection of Middle Island Road in Shoreham, which resulted in an injury to the other driver, and fled the scene without exchanging information according to police. Police attempted to pull him over later, and he did not stop, police said.

He ultimately was apprehended on foot on Randall Road in Shoreham. Police discovered he had fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana in his possession, all packaged with the intent to sell, police said. He was arrested and charged with third- and seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance, leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.

At about 3:30 p.m. Sept. 5, a Ford Mustang collided with an ambulance on the southbound side of Nicolls Road at South Drive in Stony Brook, resulting in serious injuries for the driver of the Ford, according to Suffolk County Police Department Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.

The driver of the Ford was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The incident is currently under investigation and appears to be non-criminal, Meyers said.

NatioNal Zeldin talks Trump and more during exclusive interview

By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com From the podium at The Emporium in Patchogue Nov. 8, 2016 after his race against Anna Throne Holst (D-Southampton) was officially called and his near-20point victory was secured, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said he was looking forward to the opportunity to “make America great again.”

Zeldin has become synonymous with President Donald Trump (R) locally, and though he said during an exclusive interview with the Times Beacon Record News Media editorial board he still supports the president, just short of 10 months removed from his re-election, Zeldin also said he is not a “proxy” for Trump, or anyone else.

During the 90-minute interview, the congressman preached bipartisanship, addressed the future of health care, discussed Trump’s Twitter account and inflammatory speeches like the one he made in Arizona Aug. 22, criticized the president for his response to the Charlottesville, Virginia, protest and addressed the state of his support for Trump going forward.

“I don’t give anyone my proxy.”

Despite being a strong supporter of Trump during their parallel 2016 campaigns, Zeldin had a strong response when asked if the president had his unequivocal support.

“I don’t give anyone my proxy,” Zeldin said, though he did say he supports the president and wants him to be successful.

He added if he had to vote for Trump again today, he ultimately would. “It’s not 2020, but if you asked me Aug. 25 of 2017 if I was casting a vote right now and he was running unopposed, yeah. If he was running against someone else and there was a compelling reason to go some other direction, then you factor into it.”

Zeldin pushed back on the perception of a large group of his constituents who believe he is the local embodiment of Trump. He cited several examples in which he has been critical of the president, including when Trump made a Holocaust remembrance statement that made no reference to Jewish people, or when he voted in line with many House Democrats against a bill that would roll back internet privacy protections, which Trump ultimately signed into law.

The congressman also reiterated a statement he has made publicly in the past, that the meeting between Donald Trump Jr., other members of the Trump administration and people with ties to the Russian government alleging they had damaging material on Hillary Clinton in June 2016 should have never taken place.

“If you really wanted to ask yourself, is this guy just going to be or has he been some proxy or some stooge who is refusing to say where he disagrees, you would have to ignore like 20 different examples where it’s not even taking my word for it, this is stuff that I’ve said on national TV,” Zeldin said. He surmised the perception he is too tightly connected to Trump comes from people who can’t wait for the day Trump is no longer in office.

Zeldin pushed back on the idea that partisan gridlock, which has long characterized the country’s perception of Congress, is getting worse or is being amplified

by Trump. He said bills are being passed and bipartisan discussions are being had everyday by members of the House.

“People have this perception that when the House is in session and we’re all on the floor together that it’s an old school Aaron Burr duel taking place amongst all members all the time,” he said. “Where everyone’s basically literally trying to kill each other on the floor.”

Zeldin said he isn’t going to sugarcoat it, or try to make the discussions sound all rosy. He pointed to the over 50 bills passed since Trump has taken office as proof of Republicans and Democrats working together to get things done.

He said these topics tend to get overshadowed by what is broadcasted on TV news.

“People get very discouraged when you put on the news and you’re only coming in contact with bad news,” Zeldin said. “It’s almost like [it’s] not even newsworthy to talk about what got done that day. What’s newsworthy is what may be the biggest, most dramatic confrontation or battle that might be going on. That’s the news everyday.”

He attributed heated political rhetoric and the notion Congress is struggling to work together to the business model of the three major 24-hour cable news stations — CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. “The information they’re coming in contact with is deliberately targeting them to stir emotion, because that’s how they get traffic,” he said.

The congressman recalled several times when he was slated to do a cable news in-

terview on a particular topic, which the president would be happy to see gain coverage, only to be asked questions about the investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia during the campaign because of a Tweet he sent moments before the interview.

He admitted the president has the power to steer the conversation in the right direction.

“There is no person in the United States of America with more of an ability to drive the conversation,” he said. “I don’t know of the last time we had an individual in the United States of America with a bigger soapbox than the president of the United States.”

“He’s willing to sign 50,000 different versions of this bill.”

Common ground exists between Republicans and Democrats on the future of the federal health care law, according to Zeldin, though he said he’s skeptical of the Senate’s ability to reach a majority on a replacement of the Affordable Care Act. At no point during the 90-minute conversation did the congressman use the phrase “repeal and replace,” though he discussed,

at length, some of the issues with the individual market and what it would take to repair it in a way that works.

“Beyond partisanship there’s an ideological difference on the insurance piece, and what do you do with the ACA,” Zeldin said. “They just absolutely, genuinely to their core disagree on certain components of what direction [to go in].”

Zeldin was extremely critical of the process that led up to the ultimately failed Senate vote on health care and stressed the need to return to regular order.

The health care vote revealed three Republican senators as willing to oppose the president on major legislation. As a result of that vote and other circumstances in which Republican senators have spoken out against Trump, Zeldin encouraged the use of the president’s “bully pulpit,” like the way he spoke about Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) during his trip to Phoenix Aug. 22.

When asked if the president is doing enough to grow his base of support rather than just appealing to those he already has in his camp, Zeldin was also critical.

“There are opportunities for him to do more to broaden that coalition,” he said.

He also indicated the president is prepared to compromise on a health care bill.

“He’s willing to sign 50,000 different versions of this bill,” Zeldin said.

“There is no moral equivalency.”

The congressman was most critical of the president on his response to the events in Charlottesville. He repeatedly stated there is no moral equivalency between marchers on the side of the KKK and Nazism and those who attended the rally to oppose hate, a point that was contradictory to statements Trump made publicly on the subject. Zeldin said he did agree though with the president’s point that members of the “alt-right” were not the only one’s who arrived at the Virginia rally for the purpose of inciting violence.

“If you are a good person showing up to that march and you realize once you get there that by being associated at all with that march that you are associating yourself in any way, shape, or form with the KKK or Nazism, a good person, immediately, instinctively completely disengages,” Zeldin said.

By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com More than 100 years after his great-grandfather designed and oversaw the construction of Nikola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe laboratory in Shoreham, Sebastian White, a renowned physicist and St. James native, filled a local lecture hall to discuss all things surrounding the Serbian-American inventor.

White, whose famous ancestor Stanford White’s architectural achievements include Washington Square Arch, the original Madison Square Garden and what is now the Tesla Science Center, took time out of his busy schedule as a particle physicist for CERN — the European Organization for Nuclear Research — to engage a roomful of science lovers Aug. 27.

The presentation was in conjunction with the center’s summer-long Tesla exhibit in Stony Brook and ended with a screening of clips from “Tower to the People,” a documentary made by a local filmmaker about the laboratory.

The physicist, and chairman of the Tesla Science Center’s Science Advisory Board, examined the litany of Tesla influences in modern-day technology and the late-19th century culture that helped shape his genius.

“Today it’s very clear that Tesla is trending in much of the science that’s showing up, such as wireless transmission of energy, which is a new field, and the Tesla car, but I think we shouldn’t only remember him for what he did, but also the incredible time in America he became part of,” White told the 130 residents packed into the lecture hall on the top floor at The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Center. “I think the story of Tesla, who many of my colleagues don’t even know, is an important one as it tells us how we got to where we are.”

White explained how Tesla’s grand vision for wireless transmission of energy, which eventually culminated in a torn-down tower on the Shoreham site in 1917, remains a much-pursued concept.

“There’s a very lively industry happening today, mostly because people keep forgetting to charge their iPhones and they want to find a way to do it without needing cords,” he said.

Through a process called energy harvesting, industry scientists are actively working on ways to charge cellphones while they sit inside pockets by capturing energy just from the environment.

“It’s an enormous field now — new companies are very interested in it and a lot is happening,” White said, pointing out other examples of wireless power transmissions over the years.

“In 1964, on the Walter Cronkite TV show, a

guy named William C. Brown demonstrated a model of an electric helicopter powered by a microwave. The United States, Canada and Japan have experimented with airplanes powered by radio waves. I would say, probably, if Tesla were around today, he’d be more happy about all the things people are inventing with new techniques rather than always quoting him and saying, ‘Well, Tesla said this.’”

White said Tesla’s emergence as one of the most influential scientific minds of all time coincided with what he referred to as “an incredibly important time” in the late 1800s, a period referred to as the American Renaissance.

Among the prolific figures with whom Tesla interacted were writer Mark Twain, physicist Ernest Rutherford, American businessman John Jacob Astor IV, and, of course, Stanford White. The physicist said a huge year for Tesla was 1892, when he lectured and demonstrated his experiments at the Institution for Electrical Engineers at the Royal Institution in London.

Speaking on his great-grandfather and Tesla’s friendship, which proved itself through many projects prior to Wardenclyffe, White referred to one particular exchange.

“Stanford White [once] invited Tesla to join him for an outing with William Astor Chanler, an explorer,” he recounted. “Tesla said, ‘I’m busy in the lab.’ White kept pushing him and then wrote to him, ‘I’m so delighted that you decided to tear yourself away from your laboratory. I would sooner have you on board than the Emperor of Germany or the Queen of England.’”

David Madigan, a Tesla Science Center board member, said after the lecture that having White’s perspective on this near-and-dear subject was integral.

“It’s important having Dr. White give the talk, who’s a physicist himself and whose grandfather was Stanford White, who was intimately involved in Tesla’s advancement

of his many ideas both as an investor and also as an architect,” Madigan said. “It’s a good triangulation of today’s event, the Tesla exhibit, and Dr. White bringing in the scientific and family history.”

White said he has always felt a strong connection with his great-grandfather, who had a home in Smithtown, since he was young.

“He was part of our life for sure,” he said.

“We all felt very close to him. My son is an architect, my aunt and uncle were architects, my grandfather was an architect, and even continued in the same firm.”

East Setauket resident Michael Lubinsky said he was drawn to the lecture through a lifelong interest in Tesla.

“I always felt that Tesla was not appreciated that much in his time,” Lubinsky said, laughing that much of the lecture went over his head with its scientific terms.

Paul Scala, a software engineer living in Centereach, said he too gravitated to the event to explore more of Tesla’s story.

“I think [Dr. White] did a very nice job,” he said. “It’s very cool seeing that in the tech world they’re still trying to harness wireless energy.”

Service officer of the year Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) honored Suffolk County veterans service officer and Coram native William “Bill” Rodriguez for being awarded the 2017 Service Officer of the Year.

The annual award recognizes outstanding veterans service agency officers for their exemplary commitment to helping armed forces veterans gain access to various medical and social services. Rodriguez has been employed as a county veterans service officer for over 15 years, where he serves as a liaison to the New York State Department of Labor and the Department of Social Services.

“Officer Rodriguez has dedicated over 15 years in fighting for veterans to ensure they have the resources to enjoy the quality of life that they deserve,” Bellone said. “He is a proven leader and role model for other veteran service officers, and Suffolk County residents could not be more proud of him for receiving this recognition.”

In his role as the agency’s senior veterans service officer, Rodriguez is responsible for

reviewing medical records, filing disability claims and serving as a liaison with veterans’ doctors with claims to ensure full coverage, among many other responsibilities. Rodriguez was nominated for the quality of work reflected in the claims filed on behalf of local veterans and his proactive approach to help when claims are denied. Among other attributes highlighted in the recommendation for the award included his ability to lead and mentor junior service officers.

Rodriguez is an American Legion accredited service officer, a member of the AMVETS Post 48 Lake Ronkonkoma, American Legion Post 155, lifetime member of the Disabled Army Veterans Post 190 and the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association. He is a past member of the secretary of the Navy Retiree Council, Washington, D.C., and the Suffolk County Veterans Advisory Council for U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley). Rodriguez is a 14-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department Auxiliary Police unit and holds the rank of sergeant. He is also a past member of the Suffolk County Hispanic Advisory Board.

The event took place on the great lawn of the Davis Town Meeting House in Coram and included vendors, face painting, a reading by children’s author Cindy Somer and a Revolutionary War reenactment performed by the NY 3rd Regiment.

On Aug. 23, U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (RShirley) joined Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) to deliver meals to residents at Leisure Village in Ridge. The pair were warmly welcomed into the homes and assured the residents of their strong support for the Meals on Wheels program.

Meals on Wheels is a nationwide network of community-based, nonprofit programs dedicated to providing seniors in the community with the support that enables them to remain living independently in their own homes. Cowardly Congressman Lee Zeldin In the wake of Donald Trump’s disastrous news conference, I was moved to solicit Congressman Lee Zeldin’s opinion of our president’s ability to lead our country, and also to give him my views.

In a letter I urged the congressman to be the kind of hero he was in Iraq and stand up on the floor of Congress and denounce Trump.

Imagine my surprise when I received a lengthy reply from Zeldin in less than 24 hours.

However, my surprise quickly turned to dismay when I read his reply. Zeldin sent me four solid paragraphs of total politician speak: “let’s find common ground” ... “this is a time for unity” ... “initiatives” ... “we must all work together” ... and

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! Not one word about our president’s ability to lead our country. Not one! What was Zeldin thinking?

Was this supposed to satisfy me?

Well it didn’t.

Zeldin was a hero in Iraq, no question. As a congressman, he is a total coward.

Helping Houston while uniting the nation Across Long Island there’s been a rallying cry from Suffolk County government officials, fire departments, local businesses and residents for donations to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and surrounding areas. These outpourings of charitable efforts have helped repoint our society in the right direction after recent events, but it shouldn’t take a national disaster to do so. Two poignant anniversaries on the horizon remind of us of our shared values as Americans, which shouldn’t only arise in times of crisis.

It is not within our ability to control the actions of the Charlottesville protesters or national policies on immigration, but we have the personal power to decide how to respond.

In the wake of the election of President Donald Trump (R) last November, Long Island communities dealt with an increased wave of hate crimes and bullying, which included a hate note found on a Rocky Point student’s desk, and swastikas spray-painted on walls at Northport High School.

This summer, Charlottesville protesters’ messages rippled outward, creating divisions in our local communities between those of different skin colors, religions and sexual preferences. The day after, unity rallies were held in Huntington, Port Jefferson and Three Village areas in response.

Long Islanders have proven time and time again we are stronger united than divided. Next week, on the 16th anniversary of the attacks, we’ll remember how in the months following Sept. 11, 2001, our communities pulled together to give love and support to those families who lost loved ones, and we displayed American flags as patriotic signs of our joint front against terrorism. After Hurricane Sandy, which struck five years ago this fall, we saw residents gather food and make monetary donations to help those whose homes were damaged rebuild their lives.

The momentum of these powerful events can and should be carried forward, especially in the wake of Hurricane Irma now hitting Florida.

These seemingly small but positive actions build a loving and supportive community that we not only can be proud of, but also want to live in.

We encourage you to take a moment to pay it forward with an act of kindness. Reach out and contact one of the groups collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey victims to find out how you can help, attend a 9/11 memorial ceremony to remember those who gave their lives, thank a veteran for their service to our country or help a neighbor with a difficult chore.

My wife and I had a reservation at Ruvo restaurant on a recent Sunday at noon. We usually park in the small parking lot in back of the restaurant off Maple Place, which has handicapped parking. When we arrived at 11:45 a.m. on this particular Sunday, the parking lot was blocked off and we were denied access to the handicapped spot in the lot. We were told by some-

one sitting in a car in the lot that we had to use valet parking.

It appears that employees of the parking concession barricaded the small lot and were using it exclusively for valet parking. I guess they figured it was easier than driving up the hill to the high school.

We were so incensed by this “shakedown” that we called the restaurant, canceled our

reservation and drove to a restaurant in Mount Sinai.

My wife is on a walker and that particular handicapped spot gives her easier access to the restaurant.

I thought that the valet parking program was voluntary and not designed to cause hardship on handicapped seniors.

Votes speak louder than words In the story “Zeldin talks Trump and more during exclusive interview,” in the Aug. 31 edition of The Port Times Record, the congressman attempts to put some light between himself and President Donald Trump, but despite occasional disagreements, Zeldin has (according to the very reputable tabulation of FiveThirtyEight.

com) voted 95.1 percent of the time in line with Trump’s position. Among many measures supported by Trump, Zeldin voted for The American Health Care Act (May 4); voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Jan. 13); voted to dismantle financial regulations of the Dodd-Frank Act (June 8); voted to repeal a rule requiring energy

companies to reduce waste and emissions, delaying implementation of ozone standards (July 18); voted for the repeal of a Department of Education rule on school accountability (Feb. 7), and many others.

He may want to run away from his record but he can’t hide.

Keeping politics out of public pensions As a small business owner in New York, I don’t have much time to follow politics. I’m focused on doing the things I need to do to ensure that sales are strong and our employees are able to put food on their tables.

But a recent proposal making its way through the New York State Legislature has me concerned not only for the future of my business, but the state economy as a whole.

Earlier this year, state Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) submitted a piece of legislation dubbed the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act. Krueger’s proposal would force the state comptrol-

ler to remove all fossil fuel-related investments from the New York pension system.

Referred to as “divestment,” this legislation is a bad idea for several reasons — principally because it will reduce the value of the New York pension system, with taxpayers forced to make up the shortfall. Small business owners in New York have seen enough of politicians prioritizing politics over good economic policy, and the end result is nearly always a tax increase for the mom-and-pop companies that are the engine of the state’s economy.

I don’t mind paying my fair

share, but I trust that our elected officials will use those tax dollars wisely. Legislation like the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act breaches that trust by forcing the state to make less lucrative investments, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill for political posturing that will drive down the value of the pensions we promise to our state employees.

As a small business owner, I encourage the New York State Legislature to reject this legislation and keep politics out of public pensions.

H

ow difficult must it be to become someone else? Somehow, Abby Mueller, an actress who probably isn’t a household name, transforms into the legendary singer Carole King in the Broadway musical “Beautiful.”

It’s a risky proposition. Many of us already know songs like “So Far Away” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” which means we know what the song should sound like, even if we can’t sing it in tune.

And yet, Mueller, who is clearly the star of a show about anBy Daniel Dunaief other star, pulls it off incredibly well, giving us the energy, the soul, the innocence and the ambition of a remarkable talent.

tening to the show is a transformative experience. Music has that remarkable power, bringing us back to a car when we might have often heard “Up on the Roof” or sending us back in our minds to a dance party where we threw ourselves across the floor of a friend’s house as we invented our own steps to “The Loco-Motion,” where “everybody’s doing a brand new dance, now.”

Even though the dance isn’t so brand new anymore, it feels revived when we watch the high energy action on stage.

My wife and I snuck away before the end of the summer to see the musical, which left us humming and singing the songs through the next day.

The musical itself, like many other Broadway stories, is a collection of dialogue, a loose story and a compilation of rollicking music. The story line follows the musical career of King and her writing partner and husband Gerry Goffin, whom she married when she was 17 and pregnant. The audience feels as if it’s witnessing the birth of

these songs, as Goffin pairs his familiar lyrics to the music King wrote.

The first half of the show, which is considerably longer than the second, is like a collection of musical candy tossed to a hungry audience.

I snuck glances around the room at some of the other people fortunate enough to take a musical joyride and I saw that, like me, several of the guests, who were mostly in their late 40s and older, had smiles plastered on their faces.

The second act doesn’t contain as many songs and delves into the more challenging and sadder parts of King’s life, where she endures the hardship of her husband’s infidelities and the creative tension that sometimes won the battle over his creative talent.

King, as we know, lands on her feet, becoming the legendary composer, singer and songwriter who was inducted with Goffin into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 for their songwriting.

The energy on stage throughout the

show, with performances by a talented team reviving the style and moves of the Shirelles and the Drifters, rival the thrill of watching the cast of “Mamma Mia!” who belted out the familiar Abba songs.

The difference here, however, is that the script is not a plot written to tie together songs, but evolves as the backstory behind the early days of music that long ago circled the United States and the world.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” definitely lives up to the awards it has won, including the 2015 Grammy for best musical theater album and its two Tony Awards in 2014, which include a well-deserved honor for Mueller.

The only speed bump during this otherwise wonderful ride is the dramatic downshifting in the second act, where the drama, while no doubt true to life, slows the musical momentum.

Still, the conclusion and the experience are rewarding, allowing us to reconnect with the legendary singer’s past, and our own.

subjects spouses most often argue over: managing money, spending family time together or an in-law intruding on their lives. According to an article in The New York Times Science section, “Relationship Problems? Try Getting More Sleep” by Tara Parker-Pope, Sept.

4, the study revealed that some couples argue calmly, even constructively, while others were “hostile and negative.”

The difference? The hostile couples were likely not getting enough sleep, usually less than at least seven hours.

So before you give up on a relationship, consider the sleep factor. With enough sleep, you will still have disagreements, but the tone of the conflicts will probably be more patient.

The Ohio State study goes further.

It purports to measure how marital discord together with sleep deprivation can negatively affect a person’s health.

The way the university measured for this possible toxic effect was by taking blood samples from both members of the couple before and after an argument. The samples measured the level of inflammation in the body because inflammatory proteins have been linked with heart disease, cancer and

other health problems. The results showed that “marital discord is more toxic to your body when you haven’t gotten enough sleep.”

Interestingly, when one member of the couple got adequate sleep, it mitigated the negative tone of the conflict, even if the other member was sleep deprived. So that suggests “a half-a-loaf is better than none” conclusion.

The article goes on to reveal that some 25 percent of couples sleep in separate beds, presumably in order to get more undisturbed rest. “And when one relationship partner doesn’t sleep well, his or her partner is more likely to report poor health and well-being.”

In conclusion: “The lesson, say the study authors, is that before concluding a relationship is in trouble, couples who regularly experience conflict should take stock not only of the relationship and how they are managing conflict, but also of their sleep habits.” The study was published in the May edition of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, hardly most people’s bedtime reading but offering an article to better understand the universal need in a marriage for adequate sleep.

In addition to all the authoritative information above, I can offer another nugget in the advice for marrieds department. Mine is anecdotal, not academic. Disagreements don’t go well if one or both members of a couple are hungry. Hunger starts out as insidious rather than full blown, and so it is often hard to identify the mood change when in the midst of a difficult discussion or even in an idyllic setting. But hunger can forcibly affect one’s outlook and certainly one’s patience.

I found this to be particularly true with my husband. (I’m not making a gender specific allegation here, just sayin’.) We could be having a perfectly lovely time at the zoo or some other outing, and for no apparent reason, he would begin to get cranky. The level of his crankiness would rise as we continued to stroll. Fortunately I eventually figured it out and began to carry protein bars in my pocket. At the right moment, I would pull two out and offer him one. Within merely a couple of minutes, all was again right with the world.

Newfield swept by Smithtown West in rematch

By Bill landon Smithtown West had a score to settle, as the girls volleyball team opened the season on the road at Newfield, the team that knocked them out of the postseason last year. For the Bulls, redemption was sweet as the girls swept the Wolverines in three straight sets Sept. 5, 25-10, 25-22, 25-23.

“We know they’re a tough team, they’re scrappy defensively and they’re not going to give up,” said Smithtown West head coach Deron Brown. “We came out really strong in the first set — we put a big number on the board to start.”

Anchoring the outside hitting game for Smithtown West were senior Peri Allen from the right side and freshman Sally Tietjen from the left.

“Last year — they crushed us in three,” said Allen, who notched 16 digs and eight kills. “So to win today in three proved that we [are capable] of beating them, so it was a big win for us.”

For Tietjen, the scoring was almost reversed, recording 15 kills and eight digs for the formidable scoring duo up front.

The Bulls barreled through the Newfield in the first set, and despite being ahead 13-6 in the second set, Newfield slowly chipped away at the deficit. As the momentum shifted the Wolverines’ way, with the help of some Smithtown West miscues, Newfield rallied to close the gap to 22-19, forcing Smithtown West to call timeout. Out of the break, the Wolverines scored two unanswered points to trail by one before the

Bulls closed the door, 25-22.

Newfield head coach Christy Innes said she anticipated a tough match and said her team had to shake off the first set and focus on playing mistake free the rest of the way. “[Smithtown West] did very well today — they played a very aggressive game, but we expected that,” the coach said. “I was happy with how we picked ourselves up in the second game. We got aggressive and had good communication out on the court.”

The Wolverines once again got off to a slow start to open the third set, falling behind 5-0 before they could answer. Madison Wenzel set to her outside hitters — senior Naomi Ruffalo-Roman and junior Olivia Bond — as the three battled at the net to claw their way back, tying the set 14-14. It was a see-saw battle the rest of the way with Newfield taking its first lead of the day, edging ahead 15-14, but the Bulls rallied back too, to make it a new game at 18-18.

“In that third set I just wanted to make sure we kept pushing through,” Tietjen said.

“We fell behind a little bit and this happened to us last year, so we had to really fight through that game, and we pushed hard. We were so determined to beat them after last year, so we didn’t let up.”

The Wolverines scored, but the Bulls answered. An out-of-bounds serve gave the lead back to Newfield for 20-19 advantage, and both teams traded points before Smithtown West scored the final two to win.

Newfield is back on the court Sept. 7 when the team travels to Riverhead for a 4 p.m. match.

“They pulled together,” Innes said.

“They got aggressive, had good communi-

cation and they played well in the last two games. We’ll be back at practice tomorrow and work on the individual skills stuff for each girl and we’ll focus on cleaning up the technique.”

Smithtown West will host crosstown foe Smithtown East Sept. 7 at 5:45 p.m.

“Our lineup is not really set yet — we’re still trying different kids in different spots — but everybody responded well,” Brown said. “They went out on the court with energy and they stayed positive, even when the match got tight.”
