Autism awareness group gives smiles Melonie smiled as she watched her son Justin-Joseph, or J.J. for short, land several backflips on the trampolines at West Hills Day Camp in Huntington last Saturday, Aug. 27. The activities at Suffolk Aspergers/Autism Support and Information’s first annual Family Fun Day — zip lines, face painting, sand art and a water slide, in addition to the trampoline park — were the perfect outlet for J.J.’s vast supply of energy.

J.J. is on the autism spectrum — Melonie, who declined to give her last name, is, too.

“People look at us differently,” she said. “For me, it’s important for J.J. not to have that painful experience.”

SASI, a not-for-profit support group that provides special needs families with helpful resources, provides that sense of community Melonie wants for J.J. Founded in the living room of co-founder Stephanie Mendelson on Dec. 4 of last year, SASI has grown from 12 parents to over 700 families throughout Suffolk County and across the rest of Long Island in eight months.

Co-founder Priscilla Arena said Family Fun Day was meant to be an event for children on the autism spectrum to have carefree fun, and a way for families to bond. “[I’m excited] for our kids to make friends — to see them smile,” she said, tearing up.

“Here, they’re part of one community. They are the popular kids in SASI.” Mendelson and Arena, both from Mount

&

Sinai, have children on the autism spectrum.

They found there was a lack of resources on Long Island for families and formed SASI as a support group to fill that void.

“Parents found themselves lost, confused, hopeless, alienated, isolated and alone,” Arena said. “SASI created an environment where they could come together and share their stories and experiences.”

To its members, SASI provides information about available resources, advocacy, financial and emotional support. On the last Friday of every month, the group hosts speakers at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson — so far, families have heard from a representative from Parent to Parent, a state planning attorney, a Medicaid broker and a parent advocate for education.

The group’s first speaker, special education advocate Danielle Brooks, was at Family Fun Day giving free advice to families. She said SASI is a special organization because it built a caring network for families in a short period of time. The event, she said, was a great opportunity for children to have fun in a safe environment.

SASI also hosts a birthday party club for its member’s children, who range in ages from kids just shy of 3 years old to adults in their late 20s. Arena said children on the autism spectrum have difficulty making friends, so sometimes there are not many others to invite to a child’s birthday party. The group is also working on a lending library, which will help members borrow books donated to the

organization; a job skills program; life coach program; and blue pages resource handbook, which would help parents find services they need across the island.

Legislator Sarah Anker (D-Mount Sinai) said she is “thrilled and excited” that Arena and Mendelson founded SASI. Instead of complaining about a lack of resources, she said, the SASI co-founders work hard to address issues.

“I’m really supportive and beyond happy that Priscilla has taken this concern and made it into a centerpiece to gather around — creating this organization so people have a place to go for information and resources,” Anker said.

“I think SASI will be able to address problems and advocate with a stronger, louder voice.”

The group has also gained the attention of U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley), who is sponsoring a bill to ensure that Americans with disabilities have access to necessary health care equipment.

“In Congress, one of my top priorities is ensuring that all Americans with disabilities have the resources they need to live independently and happily,” Zeldin wrote in a statement. “I thank the Suffolk Aspergers/Autism Support and Information group for their work in our community to help children and adults with disabilities.”

Family Fun Day was held at West Hills Day Camp in Huntington, a facility famous for its autism-friendly Gersh Academy. The facility donated the space for the event, which Anker said had about 800 attendees.

The event was just the first of many more to come, Arena said. “We’re new, but we’re just getting started.”

For Melonie, Family Fun Day was the perfect way to spend time with her son.

“It’s everything to see smiles on all the kids faces,” Melonie said. “They don’t get this a lot.”

Veterans kayak across the Sound for a cause

By Colm Ashe There are more convenient ways to travel from Connecticut to Port Jefferson than across the Long Island Sound on a kayak, but taking the easy way was not an option for two Army veterans.

Chris Levi and Frank Lombardi kayaked from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Port Jefferson Aug. 27 to raise money and awareness for veterans suffering from mental health issues.

The 22-mile trip took more than six hours to complete. “It was a long day,” Lombardi said with a laugh.

The distance between Bridgeport and Port Jefferson is less than 22 miles, but the pair traveled the extra mileage because of the number’s significance. According to 22Kill, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about veteran suicide and post traumatic stress disorder, 22 veterans commit suicide every day on average. Many of these suicides are directly related to PTSD-induced stress and depression, according to the organization’s website.

Lombardi said he was horrified by the statistic and is motivated to change it. “If we can give hope to just one veteran and prevent them from taking their own lives, we will consider the trip a huge success,” he said.

22Kill, along with four other regional and national nonprofit organizations collaborated to make the event happen.

Among the team of organizations was the War Writers Campaign, a publishing company on a mission to get veteran stories published.

“We called John [Tortorella, owner of the Tortorella Group] asking for a $500 donation,” Lombardi said. “He heard what we were doing and gave us $1,000.”

Time Capital donated another $1,000 and sponsored a kayak for the event. Alex Rohman, a partner of Time Capital, is an active supporter of the War Writers Campaign. He also recruited Levi and Lombardi for the kayak trip.

“I called Chris and Frank to see if they would be interested in supporting the trip and they immediately agreed,” Rohman said.

“Within one day, they wanted to do more to not only support the War Writers Campaign,

but wanted to expand the level of awareness to other organizations as well.”

Levi and Lombardi then reached out to other local businesses and organizations to further the cause. Angela’s House, W.B. Mason, Terranova Landscaping, the IGHL Foundation and the Ann Liguori Foundation contributed the remaining donations to the War Writers Campaign.

“Both Chris and Frank represent unconditional support for all veterans and have dedicated their lives to help those who are less fortunate,” Rohman said. “They are true American heroes whose strength and perseverance can provide hope for the many veterans who need support to pick themselves up and show the world that they can do amazing things.”

Beyond the War Writers Campaign and the event, Levi and Lombardi are both deeply involved in their own philanthropic pursuits.

Lombardi is an executive for Independent Group Home Living Program, a group that provides alternatives for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. He also serves on the National Advisory Board of World T.E.A.M Sports, an organization striving to bring together disabled and able-bodied citizens to participate in sports like mountain climbing, white-water rafting, bicycling and kayaking.

Levi is a frequent participant in World T.E.A.M. events. As a disabled veteran himself, Levi has overcome adversity in a big way.

In 2008, he was leading a convoy in Iraq when his Humvee was hit with rockets and IEDs. Levi lost both legs and took significant damage to his right hand and arm. He spent many years in numerous hospitals, but after countless surgeries and a difficult rehabilitation process, his spirit prevailed.

Since then, Levi has strived to become an inspiration in the lives of those who are suffering as an activist and an example. Levi’s goal during the 22-mile paddle across the Long Island Sound, was clear. He said he wanted to “show our fellow veterans that there is hope out there and with the right support, they can truly ‘Climb to Glory.’” This is also the motto of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division in which both Levi and Lombardi served.

Lombardi believes the 10th Mountain Division’s motto represents “hope for all veterans who are suffering that they can climb out of the darkness and rise to achieve great things.”

North Shore natives in need of a total knee replacement can now get a revolutionary surgery right in their own backyard. In July, John T. Mather Memorial Hospital became one of the first in the United States to conduct a robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery.

Laurie Mullens, a patient at the hospital, hopes she is on her way to being pain-free, following a groundbreaking surgery she received at John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson in late July. She said she has dealt with painful arthritis in her knees for more than a decade.

The 63-year-old Farmingdale resident thought she tried everything to alleviate her knee pain. Mullens was frustrated, as the pain was not allowing her to walk properly. She lived with what she described as severe and sharp pains in her knees, and when treatments failed to reduce her pain, Mullens opted to have knee replacement surgery.

On March 17, Mullens had her first knee replacement surgery at Mather. While recovery time after the surgery usually takes six months to a year, after four months she said she wasn’t feeling positive about her improvement. When the pain continued, she went back to Mather.

Dr. Brian McGinley, who graduated from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, did something different with Mullens. Instead of performing the surgery with only human hands, he opted to have a robot assist in the operation.

While the hospital has used robot assistance in partial replacement procedures for about a year, no one had used one for a total knee replacement yet.

“It’s robotic-assisted surgery, so the robot is controlled by a computer,” McGinley said in a phone interview. “I control the data put in the computer, and I set the parameters of which I want to cut the ends of the bone. The robot allows me to match those parameters by one millimeter of my plan because it is so specific. When I’m cutting the surface of the bone, it turns off if I go more than one millimeter outside where I set it on the computer.”

McGinley opted to use the robot for the entire surgery, as opposed to the partial usage that is common at Mather.

“They didn’t really tell me anything other than it was there to assist them in doing the surgery,” Mullens said. “It’s just assisting him, so I didn’t have to worry it wasn’t done by a surgeon.”

The surgery featured the Navio Surgical System, which utilizes hand-held robotics. When done with the system, the procedure is meant to produce precise results for knee replacements.

“We’ve been working on this project for two years, and we’ve been using computer-assisted surgery at Mather for many years,” McGinley said. “Now, we have the next-step technology to have surgery that’s robot-assisted. It’s completely safe because we’re still in control, performing the function with the assistance of the robot. There are no real major errors that can be placed in the system. If the power fails, we still have our traditional instruments that we can use.”

According to Blue Belt Technologies, creators of the Navio Surgical System, the robotic devices have led to reports of improved accuracy and repeatability of implant placement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 757,000 knee replacement surgeries in the United States in 2011.

While the end goal is to make the surgery quicker, Mullens’ surgery took 15 minutes longer than Dr. McGinley would have liked.

“It’s a little slower right now because we’re still trying to figure out the methodology during the procedure,” McGinley said. “I’m expecting to get that time down in the operating room.”

Since her July 20 surgery, Mullens said she has experienced aches and pains similar to the aftermath of her first operation.

“It’s to be expected because I had both knees done,” she said. “It’s very swollen and it’s an uncomfortable recovery.

That’s the way it goes. But I’m recovering very quickly — as quickly as to be expected.”

The technology is currently being studied to see what can be improved in order to make it more efficient and eventually more widely used. According to McGinley, the doctors who are using the robot are coming together to see if it is a valid treatment option for patients.

by ryAn deVito A certain manufactured meritocracy exists in the United States. Success has become indelibly connected to elite college education in the minds of parents and students. Consequently, a student’s potential is dictated by his or her triumphs in the college arena. The logic goes like this: the higher an institution is ranked by U.S. News & World Report, the better a student is and the better their life will be.

College ranking systems are psychological demons. Thousands of data points tell a story that, year after year, paints a skewed picture of higher education. These ranking systems use algorithms to transform a host of statistics about one school into a single score. Students often use this score to make college decisions.

The existing ranking systems are silly, though. They attempt to compare completely disparate institutions on one inflexible scale.

As a result, The Ohio State University can be compared to Pepperdine University. The former is an enormous public university in the middle of a large city; the latter is a small private Christian college perched above the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by mountains. Essentially opposites, U.S. News & World Report tells us that these schools are the same.

Ohio State and Pepperdine scored the same in the rankings algorithm. But these institutions are impossible to compare. Ohio State dominates downtown Columbus with nearly 60,000 students and another 20,000 staff members — all spread across dozens of various colleges, schools and departments.

How could you possibly reduce the complexity that is The Ohio State University down to one solitary number?

College ranking systems fail to take into account the intangibles that make a college great. Academic reputation — among leadership at peer institutions — and faculty resources are the two variables given the greatest weight in the U.S. News ranking algorithm.

The weight on these variables creates an obvious skew toward the well-endowed private universities that consistently grace the top of the rankings list. Rankings drive reputation and funding, and so a glass ceiling forms that keeps lower-ranked schools from every establishing their brands. But these variables tell us nothing about the ability of the institution and its faculty to inform and inspire students.

It’s the intangibles that enable success in students — regardless of whether they attend a top-ranked institution or not.

aged in their learning are better off. So the ability of professors to get their students excited about learning is much more important than how much research funding they have.

The extent to which professors care about their students as people and are willing to act as mentors has a major bearing on the student’s potential for engagement. These are the intangibles that college rankings system could never take into account.

Of course, top-ranked institutions can offer these intangibles. My point, though, is that you can be engaged and encouraged anywhere. There are obvious flaws in the college ranking systems that we all too often rely on when making college decisions. A great college experience is not limited to the top of any ranking’s list. Success after college is not dictated by the ranking of the college you attend.

Rather than depending on any murky ranking system, search for the college that has the greatest potential to inform, inspire and challenge you personally. Your success after college depends most on your ability to find that engaging environment. Four years of engaged learning are more valuable than any ranking on its own. And it’s the engaged student, not necessarily the elite student, who has the potential to achieve the greatest success after graduation.

At about 7 p.m. Aug. 25, a 28-year-old man from Ridge had multiple bags of heroin with the intention of selling them on Tyler Avenue in Miller Place, police said. He was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. A 33-year-old man from Shirley and a 28-year-old man from Miller Place were arrested at the same time and place, and each were charged with loitering with the intention of using a controlled substance.

A 45-year-old man from Selden took a white iPhone 6 belonging to another person from Kelli’s Grille & Wing House on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset at about 2 p.m. July 10, police said. He was arrested in Selden Aug. 28 and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.

Aug. 25, police stopped a 22-year-old man from Rocky Point driving a 2008 Cadillac for a traffic violation, according to police. During the stop, police said they found marijuana in the center console of the car. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Three tires on a 2008 Honda were punctured at about 9 p.m. Aug. 25 while the car was parked outside of a home on Bicycle Path in Terryville, according to police.

On Aug. 25 at about 10:30 a.m., an iPhone 6 was stolen from Ideal Food Basket Supermarket on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station, police said.

Ocean’s Four

A 24-year-old man from Amityville, a 28-year-old woman from Bay Shore, a 23-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, both from North Amityville, worked together to steal assorted clothing from Marshalls on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook at about 7 p.m. Aug. 26, police said.

All four were arrested and charged with petit larceny. The 23-year-old man from North Amityville had a metal magnet that allowed him to unlawfully remove security tags from the items so they wouldn’t set off alarms when they exited, according to police. He was also charged with possession of an anti-security item.

Someone broke through the front glass window of Fusion MMA & Kickboxing in Port Jefferson Station and stole cash from a vending machine at about 10 p.m. Aug. 24, police said.

A backpack containing cash, toiletries and cigarettes was stolen from a man sleeping on the sidewalk of Prospect Street in Port Jefferson at about 2 a.m. Aug. 24, according to police.

A Donald Trump campaign flag was stolen from a vehicle parked outside of Panera Bread in Port Jefferson Station at about 3 p.m. Aug. 22, police said.

A tablet and a backpack were stolen from Rite Aid Pharmacy on Jefferson Boulevard in Port Jefferson Station at about 2 p.m.

A 48-year-old woman from Stony Brook accidentally drove a Toyota Corolla into the water off of a boat ramp located on Route 25A near Barnum Avenue in Port Jefferson at about 1:30 a.m. Aug. 29, police said. No injuries were reported.

Veteran group comforts North Shore with comedy

Under Project9line, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that helps veterans reintegrate back into civilian life and helps those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, founder Patrick Donohue came up with the idea and had veteran comedians come in and teach a class to other veterans on how to perform and write his or her own material.

In March of 2015, the Veterans Comedy Assault Team performed for the first time at the Sayville VFW Post 433. According to Rago, despite it being a snowy evening, they had to turn people away because of how packed the venue was. That’s when the group realized that they had something special.

“I thought it was going to be one and done, but we had so much fun doing it and got such a big response that we realized we had a good product that we could keep going with,” Rago said.

The group performed a few more shows and held another training class this January before performing at the Centereach VFW Post 4927 — a bigger venue was needed due to another sold-out show.

One of the comedians, “Tugboat” Manny Erias, who performs his own stand-up act three nights a week, helped the team get into the Broadway Comedy Club in New York City.

“I kept saying, ‘We’re a block and a half away from the Ed Sullivan Theater,’” Rago joked excitedly. “Soon. One day.”

The group also performed at Comix Mohegan Sun, a comedy club on the grounds of the casino in Connecticut, and most recently held a benefit show at the Moose Lodge in Mount Sinai after Rago was approached by a veteran and recent divorcee with three children, who was on the verge of becoming homeless.

“I moved here from Florida and went through a divorce,” said the mother, who asked to remain anonymous. “I used all my savings. I tried to do the best I could. It became difficult.”

She reached out to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program under the

United States Department of Veterans Affairs and was turned away because she exhausted all of her resources. She said the VA told her because she wasn’t homeless yet, there was nothing else they could do for her, and that even if she was to become homeless, assistance was not guaranteed.

That’s when she called Rago’s office at the Suffolk County United Veterans Association for Mental Health and Wellness, where he is an outreach coordinator. When he heard about her situation, falling behind three months on her rent, he thought holding a comedy show to benefit her was the perfect solution.

So Rago made a call to Ron Romanska, who used to work at the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency as an officer and is now involved in the Coalition of Veterans Organizations and a memthe Moose Lodge.

During the comedy show Aug. 27, which more than 100 people attended, the Veterans Comedy Assault Team raised nearly $2,500.

The Moose Lodge chipped in $500 and the owner also handed Rago a personal check for $100, on top of the raffle prizes being donated from different stores and businesses.

It’s also therapy for those involved, like Erias, a retired U.S. Navy Reservist who suffers from anxiety and depression, and goes to the Association of Mental Health and Wellness camps for help coping with his condition.

“We donate our time, money, energy and resources into this and it’s a great success,” he said. “There’s nothing better than helping someone else out by being able to do what we love. It’s the best feeling in the world. And you do it without looking for a return. I’m broke … I’m going for disability, my mother just passed away and I have so many things working against me to keep me down, but I go up there, and for me, it’s a coping skill. I make people laugh, and forget about life for a while.”

Meals on Wheels delivers food and friendship to North Shore

By Wenhao Ma Every Tuesday, 63-year-old retired teacher Diane Melidosian drives to St. Charles Hospital at 11 a.m. The Stony Brook native pulls up to the back entrance, where she loads six trays containing hot food and six bags of cold meals into her trunk.

The staff at the Port Jefferson hospital prepares these meals, which Melidosian delivers to her Three Village Meals on Wheels clients in Port Jefferson, most of whom are in their 80s and 90s.

As she places the meals on their tables, she chats with clients to see how they’re doing. Volunteers for the nonprofit make deliveries Monday through Friday.

Three Village Meals on Wheels was created 34 years ago by Mary Ada Niatas and Anna Mae Jenkins, who prepared and delivered hot meals to handicapped and elderly parishioners of the St. James Roman Catholic Church in Setauket.

The two felt a need to create a meal delivery program because none existed in the area at that time.

The area was not eligible under existing guidelines for public funds, said Melidosian, who serves as secretary on the organization’s board, but with the help of community leaders and Huntington Meals on Wheels, Niatis and Jenkins got the

On Aug. 22, 1983, Three Village Meals on Wheels made its first delivery of 26 meals, via four routes, to 13 clients in the Three Village area. Today, the organization delivers 144 meals, via nine routes, to as many as 72 clients in northern Brookhaven Town, and is growing.

Ninety percent of Meals on Wheels’ clients are more than 70 years old and 10 percent are over 90. Most of them live alone and are unable to shop or prepare their

own food.

The cost for each client’s daily meals is $6.50 — $32.50 for the week. If the organization’s Client Services Committee determines that it’s needed, the fee may be reduced or waived.

Prior to accepting a new client, the organization sends a volunteer nurse to collect information and evaluate his or her needs. Special diets recommended by the client’s physician are implemented, and meals are planned and overseen by dieticians at the organiza-

Melidosian first got involved with the organization about 15 years ago, filling in when a volunteer was not available. “Being a substitute is nice, but real relationships form when you have the same route week after week, as I now have,” Melidosian said. That’s what she likes most about her volunteer work.

“Delivering the meals is important, but for some clients, a volunteer is the only outside contact they may have each day,” Melidosian said. “We also assess if there are any specific concerns and pass this information to the office. When necessary, the family is contacted.”

One relatively new client is 83 years old, she said. He was always able to shop for himself, but when he was released from the hospital six months ago, on oxygen therapy, he could no longer hop in his car and go and get food.

“He, like all my clients, is grateful for this service,” Melidosian said. Another client, Mary Jane Lewis, will be turning 99 in September. “[The meals] are very, very good,” she said, adding that the vegetables are fresh and the meat is tender.

One client, who requested anonymity, thinks the organization is a lifesaver. “My daughter said they’re doing God’s work.”

Protecting those who protect us Assimilating back into everyday life is one of the hardest jobs that we ask of those in the military. Returning home to a normal routine can’t be comfortable for anyone who just spent years in a combat situation, having to kill — or assisting those who are wounded. Unfortunately, incidents like the one at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where a veteran took his own life in the hospital parking lot, are not uncommon.

Thankfully, events designed to gather as many veterans in the same place in an overwhelmingly positive setting are also becoming the norm. Army veterans Frank Lombardi and Chris Levy paddled kayaks from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson Aug. 27 — a 22-mile trek — in the name of raising awareness for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder. On the same day, the Veterans Comedy Assault Team hosted a night of stand-up comedy performances to benefit a veteran and her family who needed some extra assistance.

That comedy team is the brain child of a 501(c)3 nonprofit called Project 9 Line, which is an organization dedicated to reintegrating veterans back to civilian life and helping those suffering from PTSD. Depression and suicide among veterans is a significant societal problem. Events like the two this weekend serve a major purpose, though they cannot be the only plan of attack. It is the responsibility of all citizens of this country to keep an eye on their neighbor, friend or relative to make sure they don’t feel like they’re alone.

Military operations are always carried out by teams. Better treatment of veterans returning home should be a team effort among those they protect.

A look at the ever-changing political climate Although I missed celebrating his birthday this July 5, I’ve certainly had Phineas Taylor Barnum on my mind. This Connecticut congressman and mayor of Bridgeport, owner of the famous Barnum American Museum, impresario and businessman, accomplished author and philanthropist, and, of course, in the later part of his life, founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus stands large in American popular culture.

A widely quoted cultural icon of the 19th century, Barnum observed life and the American public. His widely cited, “You can fool some of the people all of the time: you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can never fool all of the people all of the time,” spoke to the limits of the general public’s gullibility.

And most poignantly, his canon “Nobody ever went broke from underestimating the American people” has found its 21st century spokespeople in the two candidates for the presidency of the United States.

As a young man, P.T. em-

braced the Democratic Party and later in life became an ardent Lincoln Republican, and a vocal supporter of the 13th Amendment. Our two candidates have undergone “political evolutions” as well; one, once a self-proclaimed social activist, now a centrist, hawkish Democrat, and the other, a financier of liberal candidates, and now the nominee of the Republican Party, endorsed by the Tea Party.

As a follower of Universalism, which considers all mankind in the state of spiritual formation and betterment, Barnum might have taken heart in the very imperfect nature of our two leading presidential candidates.

These chameleons struggle to remake themselves but somehow never really shed their original skins.

One claims transparency, but really seeks invisibility. The other asserts that whatever the press thinks it hears him say, they hear him incorrectly. Both claim to be victims of conspiracies, yet denounce one another as conspirators. One rewrites history, the other

trips over his ignorance of it. Untrustworthy and dishonest appear most frequently connected to their names. Both are debunkers of fact and purveyors of the unsubstantiated and the mythical.

With a whisk of their hands, red faced or scowling, shrill or bombastic, they turn reality on its ear! Questionable foreign sources of loans and DOJ lawsuits that decried housing discrimination vanish before our eyes.

FBI investigations that don’t exonerate, but fail to bring charges, suddenly declare innocence! A foundation intermingles the State Department with millionaire contributors of questionable motives and alliances, all declared above board!

If we were under the big top, we’d be entertained by these two “oddities.” But there’s no smell of freshly cut field grass, cotton candy or roasted peanuts here. Sadly, we’re not at the circus, rather witnessing the prestidigitation of this American tragedy.

e are a step or two ahead of the dogs from that famous Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov, who discovered that his canines salivated when he entered the room, even if he wasn’t about to feed them.

We can and do anticipate all kinds of things, counting down the days until our wedding, the start of school, a winter vacation, a new dog’s arrival, the day we retire, the start or end of another sports season.

we didn’t miss a dentist appointment, renew a registration for a car or pay a bill that’s coming due.

These bigger events — birthdays, surprise parties, New Year’s celebrations — are like larger waves on the ocean. We ride the regular waves up and down, but the bigger waves can give us a higher high, a lower low and take us further, generally, than every other wave.

What do we do to get ready for these big moments? If we’re anticipating a reunion, we might lose weight because we want to look as fit and trim as we did 25 years ago when we graduated from high school. We might make 100 calls to make sure that all the small details about the place settings for the wedding are exactly right, that everyone’s name is spelled correctly and that no one is sitting with an ex-husband she can’t stand.

We’re often aware of the date of these bigger occasions months or even years before they arrive. A manda-

tory retirement at the age of 60, for example, could be on the calendar for 15 years or more, as both a liberating experience and a journey into the unknown.

The training for these experiences starts early, when our parents describe how our birthday is coming next month, next week or even tomorrow.

Sometimes, the anticipation is so great that sleep the night before is almost impossible, as our minds have already jumped ahead in time, putting us at the front of the room where we have to make a speech or torturing us with a range of what-if problems, as in, “What if my pants rip?” or “What if I forget what to say after slide three?” or “What if I don’t like anyone in my class this year?”

When we’re young, we read books that we know will end. We could tell that the ending was coming because we had only a few pages left before the characters we loved would leave us for the evening, until the next

book, or until the next time we read about Horton and the Whos, those brave little folks he would not want to lose.

Our anticipation can magnify any of our senses, turning that orange leaf into a harbinger of a pumpkin carving competition; converting the sound of the shower into the calming splash of the ocean as it gently laps along the shore; or recasting the scent of freshly cut grass into the exultant shouts of parents and teammates amid a walkoff hit at the end of a tightly contested baseball game.

Surely, there are countdowns some of us dread, like the start of the new school year — I didn’t say it, I just wrote it, so I didn’t violate my promise to a few kids I know. While there are responsibilities to honor, burdens to bear and hurdles to jump, there are also joys and bigger moments, like a dance, a birthday celebration or a Thanksgiving with family, that all keep the carousel turning.

Untold stories of unheralded women spies

hose of us along the North Shore and particularly in Setauket, who routinely live with tales of the local spies, might be especially interested in the life of Doris Sharrar Bohrer. One of the few female spies for the Allies during World War II, she died earlier this month at the age of 93 and was not publicly recognized for her extraordinary work until this century.

A posting in Egypt followed, where she would make 3-D balsawood relief maps from the aerial photos that helped prepare the Allied troops for the invasions of Sicily and then of the rest of Italy. Soon she was moved to Bari on Italy’s Adriatic coast, advising where to drop and to pick up OSS agents from behind enemy lines.

In examining aerial photos, she was able to see closed cattle cars with passengers heading east, and her group located the Nazi concentration camps. However, she told The Washington Post in 2011, “we were too late” in finding the concentration camps. “We kept wondering where the trains were going.”

During the war, she packed a Browning pistol in a shoulder holster but was denied the right to carry a hand grenade as a female Yugoslav partisan co-worker could do. In fact, some of her male counterparts were condescending and even outright hostile to women intelligence agents, calling them “the girls.” These included her superior officer who denied her the grenade. So she had an engineer friend fashion a dummy

grenade that she carried into the mess hall where some of the other agents were having lunch. When her superior officer reached across to grab it away, she picked it up and smashed it against the table.

The boys scattered “out the windows,” she told Ann Curry of NBC News many years later. “They just disappeared. And I sat there and ate my salad.”

After the war, Bohrer was assigned to Germany, where she spied on the Soviet Union. She interviewed German scientists who had been detained by the Soviets in order to find out for the CIA as much as possible about the state of Soviet science. This was during the lengthy Cold War. Bohrer retired from the CIA in 1979 as deputy chief of counterintelligence, training U.S. officers on tactics of foreign espionage operatives.

In effect, she spied on the spies. She married Charles Bohrer after World War II and after retirement became a residential real-estate sales agent in the 1980s and ’90s in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Virginia. She also bred and raised poodles, some of which won ribbons and prizes. Her

husband retired as director of the CIA medical office.

In 2013 two high-ranking CIA women directors thanked Bohrer and Betty McIntosh, another CIA operative, at the Langley, Virginia, headquarters for their service.

Bohrer’s work had remained secret until The Washington Post discovered in 2011 that she and McIntosh, the author of two books, lived at the same retirement home in northern Virginia; McIntosh had carried out propaganda work in China. Both women had not known each other during the war but had become good friends. Bohrer, whose husband died in 2007 after they were married 61 years, is survived by her son and his two grandchildren. McIntosh died in 2015 at age 100.

Bohrer had wanted to learn to fly to defend the U.S. after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. She never did take up aviation but found looking at aerial photographs “an interesting way to look at the world. It was almost as good as flying,” she told The Washington Post. Like the Setauket spies, Bohrer and McIntosh went unheralded for many years but their stories are now told to the world at large.
