TOWN Frankie’s Freezer provides pops to soothe cancer patients

For the young cancer patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, one of the worst side effects from chemotherapy, beyond the pain and the nausea, is mouth sores.

The best way to soothe the pain, according o 12-year-old cancer survivor Delaney Unger, is with ice pops.

“When I had mouth sores, I had to tell my dad right away, because I knew they would get worse if I didn’t treat them right,” Delaney said. “Sometimes using other stuff would make [the pain] worse, so I would usually eat ice pops.”

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital announced Thursday it would be taking part in the nonprofit American Childhood Cancer Organization’s Take a Pop, Share a Smile campaign that donates a lifetime supply of freezer pops to hospitals for its cancer patients. The hospital will receive a total of 2,000 ice pops to start, and the ACCO will keep the freezer consistently stocked every year.

To hold the new bounty of ice pops is a new freezer named Frankie’s Freezer, which was dedicated in memory of Francis “Frankie” Antonawich, a 25-year-old who died in February from Hodgkin lymphoma before he could realize his dream of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse.

“I think he would have been thrilled about this, because he really loved kids,” Antonawich’s mother and assistant director of nursing at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lynn Antonawich, said. “He not only felt that he could help a child, but also the parents of those children who would feel helpless.”

His father, Frank Antonawich, told an audience of Girl Scouts and families at a press conference May 3, trying to hold back tears, that the disease never stopped his son.

“Frank was a very active young man — it never stopped him going to work, going to the gym — he even continued to volunteer as a wrestling coach at his alma mater, St. John the Baptist Parish,” he said.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital pediatric nurse specialist Lisa Rendina, who had worked with the family before and during Frankie Antonawich’s treatment, decided she wanted to get involved and contacted the ACCO, which donated the freezer too.

“As a mother, my heart broke for Lynn, and I wanted to do something to honor Frankie,” she said. “We just wanted to

Rendina is the leader of Girl Scout Troop 105. Her troop, along with other members from Girl Scouts Service Unit 45 from Centereach, attended the unveiling. Scouts wrote inspirational phrases all over the freezer like “No one fights alone” and “The one who falls and gets up is so much stronger than the one who never fell.”

The event also honored three cancer survivors from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, including Delaney, 12-year-old Erin Ersoy and 10-year-old Aubri Krauss, all of whom are Girl Scouts from Centereach.

The parents of the three girls agreed that ice pops were one of the simplest ways to deal with the mouth sores, while also aiding in hydration and nutrition.

“I remember what happened with my daughter and mouth sores, it was terrible,”

said Delaney’s father Berk Unger of his daughter who finished her final treatment last August. “Ice pops were the only thing that helped.”

Lynn Antonawich said her son was in such severe pain following a stem cell transplant that he couldn’t eat.

“They were thinking of tube feeding him,” she said. “And he was a 24-year-old man. I couldn’t imagine what the pain must be like for a kid.”

Those who work in the children’s hospital said one of the most important things young patients need is to feel like their lived are as normal as possible.

“Anything helps,” Lynn Antonawich said.

“From donations of gifts, such as iPads and game systems, they are able to take part in a more normal life like they would at home.”

Recognizing signs of a stroke During American Stroke Month, May, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourage Long Island residents to join together to end the leading cause of death in New York.

Despite striking more than seven million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable.

According to the American Stroke Association,80percentofstrokesarepreventable.

Prevention is key. High blood pressure is the most common controllable cause of stroke. If you have it, you need to check it and keep it under control to help prevent a stroke. If you’ve had a stroke, you should ask your doctor for guidance on preventing a second one.

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefined high blood pressure as 130/80 mmHg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke.

Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access lifesaving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, teaches the acronym FAST to help people recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs: • F: face drooping — does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

• A: arm weakness — is one arm weak

Incidents and arrests May 1–7 Crime crackdown

On May 3, a 41-year-old man from Selden was arrested in connection with several alleged crimes, according to police. At about 9 p.m. April 29, he allegedly kicked in a garage window at Pep Boys on Middle Country Road in Lake Grove and stole equipment from within, according to police. On April 16 he allegedly broke into a work trailer on New Moriches Road in Lake Grove and stole tools, police said. He allegedly stole assorted property from a home on Waverly Avenue in Holtsville March 30, according to police. On April 5, police said he allegedly presented a check as payment knowing it was forged at TD Bank on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson. He also allegedly presented a forged check at Frank & Ross Payroll Services in Centereach April 6, police said. Police said he allegedly stole two jackhammers, a Honda engine, a WiFi transmitter and a digital thermometer from a home on Grant Street in Port Jefferson Station April 24. At the time of his arrest, police said he was also allegedly in possession of testosterone and prescription pills without a prescription. He was arrested in Selden and charged with second- and third-degree burglary, fourthdegree grand larceny, two counts of seconddegree possession of a forged instrument, three counts of petit larceny and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

At about 10:30 p.m. May 6, an electric razor was stolen from Target on Pond Path in South Setauket, according to police. At the same time and location, assorted food items and a men’s watch were also reported stolen as a separate incident, police said.

Fraudulent car purchase

A 44-year-old man from the Bronx allegedly purchased a 2016 Toyota from Huntington Toyota on East Jericho Turnpike Nov. 17, 2017, using someone else’s name, address, social security number and other identifying information necessary to obtain a loan and complete the purchase, according to police. He was arrested May 7 at the 6th Precinct in Selden and charged with second-degree grand larceny, first-degree identity theft, second-degree forgery and third-degree possession of personal identification.

Unlicensed driver

A 42-year-old man from Centereach was driving a 2001 Ford on Tree Road in Centereach May 6 at about 4 p.m. when during a traffic stop, police discovered he was allegedly knowingly driving with a suspended license, according to police. He was arrested and charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Mirror damage

The driver’s side mirror of a 2017 Toyota parked in the street in front of a home on Woodhull Avenue in Port Jefferson Station was damaged at 3 a.m. May 4, police said.

Motorcycle damaged

A 2004 Honda motorcycle parked in the driveway of a home on William Street in Port Jefferson Station was damaged at about 6 p.m. May 1, according to police.

Car stolen

On May 6 at about 9:30 p.m., a 2009 Toyota was stolen from the driveway of a home on Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Coram, according to police.

At a home on Hawthorne Road in Rocky Point May 6, a 70-year-old man from Rocky Point allegedly broke a headlight on a 2014 Dodge, according to police. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

A customer at Portside Bar & Grill on Main Street in Port Jefferson left a cellphone behind at about 3 a.m. May 4, and when they returned to retrieve it, it was gone, according to police.

Landscaping equipment was stolen from within an open garage at a home on Richmond Boulevard in Centereach May 4 at about 5 p.m., according to police.

On May 7 at about 11:30 a.m., a thatcher was stolen from the yard of a home on Clinton Avenue in Terryville, police said.

Residents call for transparency in future park plans IRENE RABINOWIRZ

A group of regulars say they’re not salivating over a new Selden Dog Park water fountain.

To try and meet residents’ wants with a $10,000 PetSafe Bark for Your Park grant, Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) had the town parks department receive bids for installing water lines for irrigation and water stations at the Selden dog park, which was opened in 2014. But parkgoers are saying they’re not happy with the work that was done, citing safety hazards, inconvenience and poor planning.

They took their issues to a May 4 town board meeting to voice specific concerns.

“I feel like you’re not listening to the people [who] actually go to the park every day,” Farmingville resident Vincent D’Erario said to LaValle. “Why would we put a copper pipe on a 2-by-4 with two little brackets for water? And we were supposed to be given two faucets. How are we supposed to drink? I wouldn’t want my mother bending down to get a drink of water from that faucet and share it with the dogs.”

The current spigot for dogs to drink out of is approximately 1 1/2 feet high.

No other faucet was installed for people to drink from. Coram resident Jordan Kantrowitz, who said he has Asperger’s, a high-functioning form of autism, said he wasn’t going to visit the park again because he feared if his dog were to get into a fight with a more aggressive one near the fountain that his pup could get hurt on the spigot.

“It looks like it was contracted off Craig’s List,” he said. “Do you want injured animals and distraught owners on your conscience?”

South Setauket resident Tania Williams, who has been going to the park since October, said she felt that it has only been after each complaint that the town tries to correct what visitors view as problems with the way

Residents cited examples from wrong-sized doors being put on the entrance, to gates being so high that small dogs could get under and escape, to the water pipes being moved to a more suitable location away from the large and small dog dividers, after installation.

“I don’t think it’s a very transparent process,” Williams said. “This park still needs a lot. We don’t know what’s going on, and I feel we all need to be on the same page.”

Irene Rabinowitz, who also spoke during the meeting, recalled being a part of the planning process when the dog park idea originated in 2008. She said residents were asked what they were looking for, and that those ideas haven’t come to fruition. The 25-year local said she and her frequent park visitors hoped to see a fountain comparable to the Middle Island Dog Park, and said she feels what they received was a cheap knockoff.

“We want something comparable at minimum,” Rabinowitz said. “I’m getting old —

I have [health] issues and I wanted to just have something I can enjoy. Middle Island Dog Park was put together on taxpayer money and didn’t take four years [like this park] to develop.”

When LaValle stepped into office in 2014 he said he met with representatives from Long Island Dog Owners Group, which Rabinowitz was a board member of for five years, and hosted a community forum to gather input, saying that from those meetings the park location was moved further down Boyle Road and restructured with areas for large and small dogs.

“I’ve heard residents say it’s not efficient enough, it’s not enough,” LaValle said. “As we’ve shown across the history of this dog park, it is an ever-evolving park. We have made a commitment to make it a better place every year, not only using taxpayer money, but going out and getting grants, working with community organizations, because all of our parks are important.”

Since it was constructed in July 2014,

LaValle has worked with Boy Scouts who constructed benches and bulletin boards for the park, Shop Rite paid for a bench to honor a local police guide dog and Middle Country Public Library added the Free Little Library, a tiny schoolhouse-looking structure that acts as a free-book exchange program. He said overseeing 20 of the town’s nearly 200 parks with a $50,000 budget poses its fair share of challenges, but detailed improvements in 2017 to try and prove his case. According to the councilman, reflectors were added on trees along the roadway, a “dog park ahead” sign was placed near the entrance, since the park is set back in the woods, trees were cleared on Boyle Road because it was difficult for drivers to see traffic as they entered and exited, and availability of waste pickup supply bags were increased. For the second consecutive year the town is waiving the $25 fee to use town dog parks.

“Every year there’s something new, something taken care of,” LaValle said. “I’ve shown this town will make a commitment to improve that park every year and we will continue to.”

Although drains with a gravel overlay were added to alleviate residents’ concerns over stagnant water, or the chance of dogs urinating in the pools and drinking from it, many still say that the mostly dirt park leaves a lot to be desired.

“These improvements all sound nice on paper, but physically, they aren’t doing ... any good,” D’Erario said.

“I’ve been going to the dog park since the opening and we were happy, thrilled and excited to have this place,” Janet Spano told the board. “I’m there almost every day.

I have a whole social life and made some really good friends [at] this park. When you’re young and you have children, you go to the playground, and when you’re older, you go to the dog park with your dogs. We’ve been disappointed over and over. You don’t get anything right the first time.”

Beekeepers, assemblymen work to save honeybees Representatives from local beekeepers club attribute worsening colony loss to pesticide use, decline in flower resources On an April afternoon, beekeeper Maria Hoffman strolled unfazed through a swarm of darting honeybees. She never had any fear of them, not even as a child.

The thing that does bother her — that has her and other local beekeepers living in anxiety — is the threat of colony loss.

“I had nine hives going into the winter, I came out with three,” said the Setauket resident, who is also chief of staff to state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket).

“It’s hard because you feel responsible for it.

It’s my job to take care of them. But I know other beekeepers had similar losses.”

Colony loss has gotten worse over the last year. Long Island Beekeepers Club, an organization that boasts more than 300 members based mostly in Suffolk County, did an informal survey of 60 of their members with 243 hives between them. They estimated an approximate 50 percent colony loss from April 2017 to April 2018. This is compared to last year which estimated colony loss at approximately 30 percent.

“All of us are working extremely hard to keep our colonies alive on our own dime,” Smithtown beekeeper Moira Alexander said.

“We are doing everything, everything to ensure our colonies success, and quite honestly we are losing that battle. We can feed them when there is a time of dearth.

We can work on their health issues, we can provide water sources, but the one thing we cannot do is control weather and climate.”

Beekeepers from the club met with Englebright and state Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick (R-St. James) April 6 to discuss the many problems that are affecting bees and beekeepers. The club said there were several items the state could help with to curb this hive loss, including the need for more state bee inspectors, protecting and expanding areas of pollen-producing plants and limiting harmful pesticides.

Club members said there has been a loss of forage of native pollinating plants being destroyed or replaced with nonflowering or non-pollinating plants.

“Right now, in most of my yards, I’m down to five colonies in a yard from 10,” said Donal Peterson, vice president of the Long Island Beekeepers Club. “A pound of honey takes about two million flower visits. If you are going to put them out in a place, you want them to be able to feed themselves, and then make you a bit of money. With this loss, they can’t do that.”

Beekeepers say flower resources are diminishing, and the number of lawns, or “green deserts,” as beekeeper Grace Mehl calls them, has only expanded.

According to a 2015 study conducted by NASA and several Colorado and Montana state universities, lawns take up more than 63,000 square miles of land in the United States. It is the largest single crop in the country.

“That gives you a perspective of how we are affecting our environment,” Mehl said.

The group proposed planting flowers and other pollen producing plants along major highways, and also putting the emphasis on pollen producing trees like linden trees in metropolitan areas.

Essential tips for safe paddleboating this summer There is something special about being in a paddleboat quietly gliding along in the water without disturbing wildlife and taking the opportunity to think about nature.

Additionally, paddling represents a great opportunity to exercise the arms and the upper body. However, all of this growth in paddle sports has a dark side. Unlike with power boats, the number of paddlecraft fatalities has gone up. In 2015, 29 percent of boating deaths were paddle craft related. In 2016, fatalities climbed even higher. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Strategic Plan for 2018 focuses efforts on addressing the problem by extending information to the paddlecraft community.

Additionally, the USCG has generated a paddlecraft vessel safety check, which is administered by a USCG approved vessel examiner, such as Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel.

The problem with paddleboat safety starts at the retailer from which the craft are purchased. In sales of power and sailboats, a safety package is commonly included with a new boat purchase, and there are, more likely than not, state boating regulations requiring boaters to take state sanctioned courses. This is certainly true of New York State. This has led to more knowledgeable boaters on the water.

In the case of paddleboating, craft can be purchased online or at big box stores where little or no concern is given to handling and safety on the water.

“Safety equipment offered for sale may be generic rather than specific to location, and the sales personnel may or may not be

knowledgeable about local needs,” said Don Goff, the national commodore’s senior adviser for paddlecraft. “Many retailers do not have safety equipment specific to paddlers, including distress flags, floatable marine radios, personal locator beacons and deck lines.”

Paddlecraft boating is especially dangerous in a crowded mooring field, where all sorts of craft are maneuvering, and the paddle boater can be surprised by a power boat leaving or seeking a mooring. This problem can also occur in areas that are popular for anchoring.

Channels used by ferries can present special challenges for paddlers, due to the limitations in maneuverability of large craft. It should be remembered by paddlers and small boat operators generally that sailboats underway have limitations in their ability to maneuver and this can lead to collisions. Small fishing boats are frequently overloaded and positioned in the vicinity of harbor entrances and channels, where there is considerable boating traffic. Dangers exist for such boats to be overwhelmed by passing power boats. Of course, all small craft are particularly vulnerable to changeable weather conditions, and just as any boater should, one must exercise extreme caution if bad weather conditions develop.

To alleviate many problems faced in small craft, users should at least wear personal flotation devices and have a sound-producing device, such as a whistle. Among other requirements, each paddler 13 years of age or older must have a USCG-approved Type I, II, III, or appropriate Type V personal flotation device. It doesn’t have to be worn, although that’s certainly the wisest plan and one that

The jacket must be in “serviceable condition,” without rips, tears or deterioration that will diminish its performance. A Type V jacket can be used as long as it’s USCG-approved and applicable for the activity. Belt pouch-type inflatable personal flotation devices, must be worn on the person to meet the life jacket regulation.

Those on the water after sunset need to have a flashlight, or similar lighting device, to warn other boaters. As the operator of a vessel, you need to follow the navigation rules.

Boaters are also required to report any boat-

ing accident or injury to the local reporting authority, either the USCG or other agency that has been delegated that authority.

Above all, when you’re on the water in any kind of craft, be alert and exercise awareness of your environment. Boating can be a highly pleasurable activity when common sense is adhered to.

Mother knows best With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, our editorial staff wanted to take a moment to reflect and give thanks for the powerful mothers and grandmothers who have shaped our lives.

Rita J. Egan: Both my mother and I often find ourselves feeling as if we’re turning into my grandmother, and many times have uttered the words, “Grandma was right about that.” After my parents separated, I moved in with my maternal grandparents, so it’s no surprise my grandmother had as much of an influence on me as she did on my mother. It’s been said it takes a village to raise a child, and I agree. I am the person I am today thanks to not only my mother but my grandmother, my Aunt Eileen, friends’ mothers and so many who took me under their wings. So on Mother’s Day I say thank you not only to my mom but to all the women who made a difference in my life.

Desirée Keegan: I don’t know where to begin, and it’s hard to find the words to say, but “Thank You” are very small ones for the sacrifices my mother has made every single day.

Her kind support throughout the years, sharing in my triumphs and tears, has never gone unnoticed.

I love the way she stops to listen, even if she doesn’t have the time. Or how she loves to make me laugh with her old jokes or terrible singing, especially when she knows I’m down. Watching a single mother be so selfless is envious, and even if I could be just a piece of what she is, I’d consider myself a success.

Alex Petroski: When I was about 22 I irresponsibly made a huge mistake that cost me a job on my previous career path. The mistake was a result of laziness and immaturity, and I also knew I was comfortable at my retail job, making enough money to feed myself and do things with friends. When I told my mom about the mistake, it was in the context of being comfortable with staying at my retail job anyway, so no big deal. She didn’t take it nearly as lightly as I did. She challenged me to do something that would make her and my dad proud, and that conversation has been the guiding principle of my work life ever since. I can’t speak for her as far as if I’ve succeeded or not yet, but it will never be for a lack of effort. Thanks for knowing when to push me, Mom. Sara-Megan Walsh: It’s said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. This is the second Mother’s Day since my mom, Carol, moved south to Florida.

While I’m not great at making regular phone calls, I miss being able to drop by the house on a Friday night to say hello and ask for your advice while hopefully snagging a free slice of pizza. You provide encouragement when I’m running ragged and gently push me to keep going. I love the homemade sweaters, but they aren’t a substitute for your hugs.

Kyle Barr: Dear Mom, the way I know you love me is because you always worry.

You worry about what I’m going to eat when I get home. You worry about if I’m getting enough sleep, if I take the time to be with friends, if my friends are treating me right, about what I want to do with my life. You worry if I am home too much, you worry if I’m gone too much. You worry about my student loans. You worry about my bank account.

Worry runs like grains of sugar around your mouth and down your cheeks. It’s real, solid, sweet. I see it sparkling in your eyes when you look at me. Distilled, worry becomes pure empathy.

At the beginning you gave me life and made it a part of yours. To worry is to make another person more important than yourself. You made me and in doing so made me a part of you.

I couldn’t properly explain how much I love you. Perhaps you can see it when I worry.

I worry that you don’t think enough about yourself. I worry that I would hurt you if I ever left home. I worry that you worry a little too much. At least please know that I love you because I worry.

Letters to the editor

Response: Drawing our attention away from guns Jim Soviero’s letter on the opioid tragedy, “Redirecting energy toward overdoses” in The Times of Middle Country May 3 edition is filled with non sequiturs and a few glaring omissions. What is his point?

Is it to suggest that Jeff Sessions’ justice department reverse its new punitive approach to drug, particularly marijuana, users, and return to Obama’s more lenient policy? No. To show mercy to those jailed during the crack cocaine epidemic, let alone those jailed for marijuana possession? Never.

To demand further prosecution of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma, which knowingly flooded our nation with OxyContin — the alternative to crystal meth and the real start of the opioid crisis — far in excess of legitimate medical needs? No. Purdue was fined $600 million in 2006 for criminally marketing OxyContin “with the intent to defraud or mislead,” a drop in the bucket of the $13 billion fortune it extracted from

the crime. So? Drug abuse is driven by despair: economic uncertainty, poverty and the family crises these provoke. And it costs about $500 billion a year. Does Soviero propose any government plan to ameliorate, let alone solve, these social problems? Of course not.

Democrats Elizabeth Warren and Elijah Cummings’ bill provides for treatment, support and research.

Soviero’s only goal here is to draw attention away from gun control by minimizing the effects of gun violence and incidentally, accusing the March for Our Lives protesters, whose success clearly disturbs him, of moral turpitude in not switching their campaign to opioids.

Soviero first notes that overdose fatalities exceed gun homicides.

And AR-15s account for only 400 of them. Tell that to the parents of teenagers in Parkland, or the parents of 20 six-year-olds in Newtown, Connecticut. So, what?

Lung cancer kills 150,000 annually, but we hear no criticism of tobacco companies. Soviero also does not mention gun suicides, about 22,000 annually: If there’s a gun handy, people will use it.

Soviero makes no mention of gun trafficking at all: How illegal guns from lax “red” states kill in Chicago and New York, as Attorney General Eric Schneiderman found.

In short, Soviero is a fervent supporter of the second half of the Second Amendment and an equally fervent opponent of the first half, which reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State.” We know this from his earlier letters opposing New York’s Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act regulating handgun magazine size and prohibiting assault rifles. Let him continue this advocacy but spare us the crocodile tears about opioid abuse.

Reduce court case backlog, address gang violence Dear Director James McHenry, On April 12, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement presented the Fiscal Year 2019 president’s budget request. The testimony included a commitment to open 75 new immigration courtrooms in 2018 to reduce the backlog of pending immigration cases.

As [director of] the Executive Office for Immigration Review, [which] identifies locations for new immigration courts, we respectfully request you place at least one of these new locations on Long Island. According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, Suffolk and Nassau counties rank in the top 10 among all counties in the nation for pending cases before immigration courts, with 23,178 cases as of Dec. 31, 2017.

Suffolk and Nassau counties have absorbed a significant number of unaccompanied alien children with 1,219 being relocated in Nassau County and 1,472 going to sponsors in Suffolk County in 2017.

Pending cases contribute to associated gang violence on Long Island as gang members target youth like UACs. While serving as Suffolk County’s police commissioner, now Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini stated in his testimony to the Committee on Homeland Security, “of a sampling of 143 active gang members, 89 entered the United States illegally and currently do not have legal status (39 of whom are UACs), 48 are of unknown immigration status, and 17 have legal status (temporary or otherwise).” An adequate

expansion of EOIR resources to Long Island would assist local law enforcement’s relationship with ICE to implement enacted immigration laws.

The backlog in immigration courts is a result of years of policy failures under prior administrations. Effective immigration judge teams are necessary to carry out the U.S. Department of Justice’s statutory responsibility to prosecute administrative immigration cases. Suffolk and Nassau counties could efficiently use these resources to address the backlog as well as prioritize incoming cases related to gang violence.

Personal attacks are unproductive It is useful and permissible for our fellow townspeople to write letters to this fine newspaper so that various ideas, especially those involving political issues, can be openly discussed. However, I have come to believe that we should strictly avoid personal attacks on our neighboring citizens. Such attacks are usually pointless and unproductive, and they create unnecessary tensions.

In recent years I have tried to

avoid regarding our newspaper as a boxing ring, as I sometimes regrettably did in the past. I now believe that personal attacks on our neighboring villagers should be avoided.

On the other hand, it is perfectly acceptable to discuss publicly what politicians say, do or undo. We need to praise or criticize their words or deeds, since officeholders’ utterances and actions invariably result in

beneficial or disastrous consequences for the public. Politicians must never be ignored; they must be openly lauded or corrected because what they do or say or plan affects everyone, positively or negatively. Consequently, their statements, scribblings and ideas must be openly analyzed, debated and subjected to the judgment of the American people.

Red Sox, Yankees fans feel October excitement in May

I

t’s only May and, despite the warm weather, it feels a bit like October around here, at least, if you talk to fans of the Yankees and Red Sox. The two best teams in baseball, as of earlier this week, were preparing o go head-to-head in a three-game series that seemed to have more on the line than a typical series between the heated rivals at this point in spring.

The Red Sox had that incredibly hot start, winning 17 of their first 19 games, tearing up the league anyone who

By Daniel Dunaief and dared to try to compete with them. The Yankees, meanwhile, started slowly, sputtering to a .500 record.

And then the Yankees seemed to have gotten as hot as the weather, scoring runs in the clutch, pitching with confidence and bringing in rookies like Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, who play more like seasoned veterans.

On a recent evening, my wife and I made a quick stop to the grocery store. As we were walking out, a friend saw me in my Yankees sweatshirt. The friend asked if the team pulled out a win, even though they were losing 4-0 in the eighth inning.

As my wife waited patiently, I recounted nearly every at bat that led to another improbable Yankees comeback. A man who worked at the supermarket came over to listen, put up his hand to high-five me and said he had a feeling they might come back.

While the team measures the success of the season by the ability to win the World Series, the fans, particularly during a season with so much early promise, can bask in the excitement of individual games or series.

The first season, as the incredibly long 162 games from March through October is called, can include numerous highlights that allow fans to appreciate the journey, as well as the destination.

Nothing is a given in a game or a season. We attend or watch any game knowing that the walk-off home run the rookie hit could just as easily have been an inning ending double play.

Ultimately, the most important part of the season is the recognition that it is a game. You can see that when the players mob each other at the plate or smile through their interviews with the sideline reporters after a tight contest.

Year after year, all these teams with all their fans hope the season ends with a victory parade. They want to be able to say, “I was there.”

Ultimately, in life, that’s what we’re hoping for. Moments to cheer for friends and family, to celebrate victories and to enjoy these contests.

Indeed, the winners often look back on the moments when nothing came easily, when their team, their family or their opportunity seemed to be so elusive. These are occasions when nothing that seems to go right turns into those where everything goes according to plan. They don’t happen because you’ve got the right fortune cookie, put on the right socks or asked for some deity to help your team beat another team full of equally worthy opponents, whose fans utter the same prayers.

They happen because of the hard work and dedication. They also often happen because people are taking great pride in doing their jobs and being a part of a team.

Right now, it feels like these two blood rivals are well-matched, facing off in a May series that can bring the energy of October. And, hey, if you’re looking to connect with someone, put on a Yankees or Red Sox sweatshirt and head to the supermarket.

by that point and they came to accept the new arrangement, even were infrequently pleased with my new occupation. And since my office was only some five minutes from the house and three minutes from their school, I felt I could get to them quickly if they needed me. I was able to look in on them in the course of each day. In fact, I had more trouble convincing my mother than my children that it was acceptable to work both inside and outside the home. I just could never understand how all three unfailingly picked friends who lived on the farthest ends of the school district and had to be driven back and forth. That and the constant car pooling for games and music lessons made me grateful that I had learned to drive — not a typical skill among my urban classmates when I was growing up.

I weathered their teenage years as best I could, sometimes marveling that only my children could make me scream (and my mother). At the same time, my husband and I vicariously enjoyed the children’s various successes: academic, musical and athletic. They were

blossoming into young adults and we were regularly irritated by them and immensely proud of them.

As the children reached their later teenage years, the family dynamic shifted. My husband was terminally ill, and the children were forced to deal with death. My mother and my father had both passed on by then, and the boys had been deeply touched by their loss, but the death of a parent at a far younger age than expected for either their father or themselves struck me as a cruel trick. Somehow we had not lived up to our part of the parenting contract.

I guess that was when my children started to become my friends. It probably would have happened around that age anyway, but we became allies in the face of adversity. And then life’s wonderful joys unfurled. ... They graduated, got jobs, found their loved ones and eventually made me a grandmother.

That’s a club one can’t apply to oneself, but having arrived there, I can endlessly sing its praises.

Bottom line: How ultimately satisfying it is for me to be a mom.

rom the time I was a young girl, I wanted to be a mother.

The urge to hold and to love a baby, my baby, was a conscious one. I also had professional ambitions, so in those days, before women expected to be able to do it all, there was a bit of a conflict in my head. Curiously, while I don’t remember telling anyone about my maternal urges, I did mention it on my first date to the man I eventually married. He told me that he too

When I did have my first child, I was quietly terrified. I was the caboose child in my parents’ families, meaning that my parents were older, and everyone in my generation was already born before I came on the scene. There were no babies for me

to practice on, I had never given a baby a bottle nor changed a diaper, and I was afraid I was inadvertently going to do some terrible harm to a helpless infant. It wasn’t until the baby’s one-month checkup, when the pediatrician exalted about how his development — size and weight — were “off the charts,” that I began to relax and believe the baby would survive my ignorance.

After that the parenting urge was so fulfilling that we did it twice more in record time. Judging from my friends’ tales of their children, we had it easy with three boys. They were exceedingly energetic but never moody, didn’t hold a grudge for more than three minutes, weren’t particular about what clothes they wore and could be entertained with a generous supply of miniature trucks on rainy, “indoor” days or any ball game on “outside” days. Baseball on our dead end street was their favorite, and I became a pretty good pitcher, if I do say so myself.

They didn’t much like it when I started the first newspaper and was away from the house a great deal.
