New scholarship program makes college affordable

Egan Rita@tBRnEwspapERs.com Attending college will become a bit more manageable for many New Yorkers — especially for those in the middle class — after the state legislature passed the 2018 state budget, which page a26 included the Excelsior Scholarship, making New York home to the nation’s first accessible college program. The scholarship program, one that received full support from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), will provide free college tuition to students who qualify.

“With this budget, New York has the nation’s first accessible college program,” Cuomo said in a statement. “It’s a different model. Today, college is what high school was — it should always be an option even if you can’t afford it. The Excelsior Scholarship will make college accessible to thousands of working and middle class students and shows the difference that government can make. There is no child who will go to sleep tonight and say, I have great dreams, but I don’t believe I’ll be able to get a college education because parents can’t afford it. With this program, every child will have the opportunity that education provides.”

According to the state’s website, there are potentially 940,000 middle-class families and individuals who can benefit from the program in New York. On Long Island,

it is estimated there are 112,890 families with college-age students and 55.6 percent may be eligible.

To qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship, a student must be enrolled in a CUNY or SUNY two- or four-year college full-time, which is 30 credits or more, and complete their education within the allotted time.

There is also a household federal adjusted gross income limit starting at $100,000 in the fall of 2017. In 2018 the limit will increase to $110,000 and will reach $125,00 in 2019.

The scholarship only covers tuition, and students are still required to pay room and board and any additional fees that the institution charges. Also, students who receive a need-based Pell Grant or New York Tuition Assistance Program grant must use these funds before receiving any money from the Excelsior Scholarship.

In Suffolk County, those who attend Stony Brook University or Suffolk County Community College may be able to take advantage of the new scholarship. Tuition for Stony Brook University costs $6,470 a year, while SCCC is $4,770. For those who live on campus at Stony Brook, the cost for rooming there can be approximately $8,090; however, costs can vary depending on housing options.

Like most scholarships, students will need to maintain a satisfactory grade point average; however, unlike other scholarships, after graduating from college, the student must sign a contract with the New

Local officials, businesses condemn certain tax reforms

By Victoria Espinoza victoria@tbrnewspapers.com Government officials and community organizations alike are concerned with possible tax reforms they say could cost Long Island residents millions.

While President Donald Trump (R) has not released any formal proposal yet for tax reform, organizations like the Long Island Association, a nonprofit group focused on business and civic affairs, are reacting to both Trump’s and his administration’s rhetoric during and since the 2016 election.

The LIA sent Trump a letter in December outlining some of their fears with possible tax reform in the coming year, specifically the possibility of eliminating deductions for real property taxes, mortgage interest, state in-

come tax and reducing charitable donation deductions.

“We are concerned about some of the comments your Secretary of Treasury nominee Steven Mnuchin made about limiting the ability to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes on federal tax returns,” the letter from the organization said. “Speaker Paul Ryan has also expressed support for scaling back or eliminating the deduction for state and local income and property taxes.”

Matt Cohen, vice president of government affairs and communications for the LIA, said eliminating deductions could be a “disaster,” for Long Island. He referenced various news articles including one in The Hill, which reported the administration is taking a “serious look,” at capping deductions including ones for charitable donations.

“If these proposals are given more structure and mo-

mentum it would be devastating for Long Island,” he said in a phone interview.

The LIA Research Institute did a study on the effects eliminating the deductions might have and said it could cost Long Islander’s $4.4 billion. In a 2013 report, they found Long Island sends the federal government $23.1 billion more than it receives back in programs and services from the government, so taxpayers in all brackets would be impacted by these cuts to deductions. The study said the middle class would be hit especially hard with tax increases, anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 annually, and $3 billion would be taken away from the regional economy.

“No matter who you are, if you’re deducting mortgage interest on your returns you’re going to get hurt by this,” Cohen said. “In an area with high costs and high taxes, this could even drag down the real estate market.”

Cohen is not the only one who is concerned.

Suffolk County legislators and Executive Steve Bellone (D) echoed the sentiments.

“For Suffolk County residents, who already pay a steep price in property taxes, this type of tax reform will be a blow to homeowners and will have a negative ripple effect on our economy as a whole,” Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (DCenterport) said at an event earlier this month. “With potential increases as high as $4,000, this reform will cut off many Suffolk County residents from the American dream by discouraging home ownership, and will cripple current homeowners’ ability to make ends meet.”

Bellone said the elimination of these deductions is not welcome to Suffolk County.

“Any attempt by Washington to eviscerate these critical financial incentives under the guise of tax reform is a nonstarter and should be dead on arrival,” he said.

“Instead of making it more costly to own a home on Long Island, the federal government should do more to lower taxes for hardworking homeowners and not the other way around.”

Elected officials were not the only voices speaking up.

Robert J. Ansell, board member of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce also spoke at the April 5 press event.

“Two-thirds of the country’s gross domestic product is consumer spending,” Ansell said. “The elimination of the mortgage interest, state income tax, and real property tax deductions not only puts a significant damper on incentivizing home ownership, but will also mean that families will have less disposable income to spend in their communities on local businesses.”

Cohen said it’s important to get out early with this issue, even though no formal or concrete decisions have been made yet.

“It’s a new administration, a new theme with new policies — we just want to get out ahead of this and show where we stand,” he said

Family honors patriarch in NYC Fight for Air Climb

Egan Rita@tbRnewspapeRs.com When James Riordan, 82, died in 2016 after battling lung cancer, many would think his greatest contribution to the world was his involvement with the Apollo 13 space mission. But to his relatives, it was his sense of family and kindness that touched others most.

Inheriting his sense of generosity, the former Stony Brook resident’s family participated in the American Lung Association Fight for Air Climb April 1 for the second straight time, raising $1,512 for the cause in his memory. This year’s event included 600 participants climbing the 55 flights of stairs at One Penn Plaza, a New York City skyscraper, the equivalent of 1,210 steps.

Granddaughter Jessica Frisina, of Rocky Point, organized Team Apollo in honor of her fond memories of the aerospace engineer with the Northrop Grumman Corporation.

“He was completely humble,” she said.

“He was so willing to help anybody and everybody. He just wanted to lend a helping hand to anyone that was willing to take it — just a generous and kind person. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body.”

Riordan, who lived in Stony Brook with his wife Ruth since 1964, was an integral member of the Apollo 13 mission. Due to his work helping to direct the team on the construction of the Lunar Excursion Module and its safe return, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Richard Nixon in 1970 along with his fellow members of the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team.

His son Bob Riordan, Frisina’s stepfather, said while growing up he and his siblings didn’t realize just how important their father’s job was. It wasn’t until they were going through their father’s books, or hearing from friends who worked at Grumman, that they realized just how much he had accomplished.

He said they were amazed that their father was in the control room during the Apollo 13 mission and treasure the book “Race to the Moon,” where James Riordan is pictured in a control room with astronaut Neil Armstrong.

“We can’t believe we had a father who did this for a living,” Bob Riordan said.

The son said he isn’t surprised his father didn’t talk much about his work though, because of his modesty.

“He never cared about keeping up with the Joneses,” he said. “All he ever cared

James Riordan suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the early stages of emphysema, and about a year before his passing, he was diagnosed with stage 0 lung cancer. His son said his father smoked for decades, starting as a teenager.

Riordan said the former engineer was always in great shape and would go to the gym on a regular basis and kept active with volunteer opportunities such as tutoring children in math or visiting patients at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was in his late 70s when he started noticing shortness of breath.

Frisina said she got the idea to start the Fight for Air Climb team after her grandfather’s death. In his will, her grandfather left money for a big party with family and friends, similar to one they threw him as his health began deteriorating.

“I just knew he was so content,” Bob Riordan said recalling the party. “He sat there looking at all the kids and the grandkids, and I knew he was so proud of us all.

And that was what his life was all about — to have his children be successful and safe, and grandchildren, too.”

When Frisina realized it was going to be difficult to get everyone together once again for a party, she thought the climb would be a great way to get everyone together.

Riordan said he wasn’t surprise when his stepdaughter started up the team.

“I was so proud of her for doing that, but that’s the kind of person Jessica is,” he said.

Frisina said while the Riordans are her stepfamily, she considers them family all the same. Riordan said his father and stepdaughter hit it off as soon as they met when she was 7 years old.

“They took a liking to each other the first day they met,” Riordan said. “I always felt kind of emotional when those two were together. He was the type of man that any children who came into his life just took to him — that’s just the type of guy he was.”

While joining the Fight for Air Climb was a last-minute decision in 2016, with only a few relatives being able to come out and cheer them on, this year she said almost a dozen family members came out to show support for her, Riordan, her stepbrother Matt Riordan and her aunt Kathy Bern, who traveled from North Carolina.

Frisina said she looks forward to participating in the event again next year and

knows participation from the family will only continue to grow.

Her uncle Jim Riordan was on hand this year to show support. He said Frisina always had a great appreciation for his father.

“She is by every definition a grandchild in this family,” he said.

Bob Riordan said he was in better shape for this year’s event after finding out how difficult the climb was last year.

“The first time I did it, I thought I was going to join my father,” Riordan joked.

Frisina said climbing the 55 flights of stairs is supposed to simulate how it feels to have a lung ailment, and once you pass flight 10, it becomes more and more difficult to breathe.

“It initially feels amazing to complete something like that,” Frisina said. “But in reality, it makes you think as you’re doing it. [My grandfather] had to deal with this every day — feeling like this and overcoming walking and not being able to breathe.

It makes you put yourself in somebody else’s shoes who’s dealing with it.”

Brookhaven Town host discussion on crime, addiction

By Kevin reDDing kevin@tbrnewspapers.com Drug addiction on the North Shore and across Suffolk County is a complicated problem, so the police department and the community are coming together to come up with strategies to combat it.

One of the reasons Salvatore Pitti, a retired New York City police officer, left the Big Apple to live on Long Island he said in part was to escape drug-related crime. But in recent years, he has seen what he called an alarming uptick in heroin and opioid-related overdoses and deaths in the suburbs — so he decided to do something about it.

“We need to put the fear of God into our kids about this problem,” Pitti said April 11 during a Crime Awareness Committee meeting at Brookhaven Town Hall. “I’ve had the misfortune, in my career, to scoop three or four children off the street, dead. I don’t want to see that.”

Pitti, vice president of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association and leader of a local neighborhood watch group designed to eliminate local criminal activity, co-sponsored the event along with Brookhaven Town.

Joined by several guest speakers including Supervisor Ed Romaine (R), Councilwoman Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson) and Suffolk County Police Department Commissioner Tim Sini, Pitti spoke with local organization leaders and residents about how they can help make their communities safer.

Sini, who became commissioner last

year, has already rolled out several initiatives through the SCPD to address the issues of illegal drug sales, abuse and overdoses as well as prevention and recovery in his short time leading the department.

Many of them rely on police department collaboration with the public.

“I can’t tell you the number of times that information from people in this room or from folks like you have helped us solve crimes,” Sini said, highlighting such programs as the NARC hotline, a partnership with Suffolk County Crime Stoppers, where callers can give crime tips anonymously and receive cash rewards for those that lead to arrests.

Another initiative, Sini said, is the Long Island Heroin Task Force, which targets drug dealers causing overdoses and the areas that have the biggest spikes in overdoses through data collected in the department. Programs are also being implemented in local schools that teach about the consequences of taking drugs, offer prevention and recovery steps, and even train parents and teens on how to administer Narcan, the nasal spray used to reverse heroin overdoses.

“We need to get people off drugs and into treatment for recovery,” Sini said.

“Please think of ways the SCPD can partner with you to promote drug prevention in your community.”

Cartright said she understands the importance of a partnership with local law enforcement.

“I grew up in Queens, in an urban community where there was a lot of crime, and

“This is not a problem we can solve alone.”

Pitti said he started the Crime Awareness Committee three years ago to shine a spotlight on a local marijuana dealer in his neighborhood. Due to his effort and a collaboration with neighbors and the police, the dealer was ultimately pushed off the block.

Even though the group has grown, he said he wants more community involvement.

“When I first started this, I received a civic email list but, unfortunately, it was

antiquated and outdated,” he said. “We’re working together on it, to try and fix it and put more emails in. That, to me, is the first problem. If we can’t call each other, how can we help each other?”

He handed out a packet to attendees of the meeting outlining ways to identify dangerous people in the community. The packet gives details on how to check if houses in a neighborhood have rental permits; report town code violations; deter underage drinking at parties and neighborhood gatherings; and a detailed physical description form to fill out upon witnessing suspicious activity.

Mount Sinai doctor drowns after fall off boat in Long Island Sound

Milford Fire Rescue received a 911 call from a woman saying her husband, Richard Melucci, 43, had fallen overboard as they were boating on the Sound near Mil-

ford, Connecticut at about 6 p.m. Melucci’s wife, Maryann, was below the deck when she heard the splash, police said.

Police say Melucci, a 1991 Ward Melville graduate, was not wearing a life jacket when he fell into the water, so his wife attempted to throw a life ring out several times without success, according to Captain Keith Williams of the Connecticut State Police Department.

Milford’s dive team and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene and rescued Melucci from the water about 55 minutes later, authorities said. Melucci and his wife were taken to Milford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An avid boater, Melucci worked at Long Island Anesthesia Physicians in Rocky Point and was affiliated with John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was on his new 25-foot vessel, which was taken to Milford Landing, where authorities are conducting a full investigation.

Honoring local heroes

On April 8, Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) attended the Selden Fire Department’s annual installation dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

At the event, the councilman honored the 2016 Members of the Year, members with year-of-service milestones, and the incoming and outgoing officers. Each was presented with a certificate of appreciation for their service to the community. A special proclamation was presented to firefighter Fred Korte, for his time of service beginning in 1949.

“All my thanks go to the members of the Selden Fire Department for their dedicated service to the community,” LaValle said.

Tearing down an eyesore

“They put their lives on the line every day to save lives and protect the property of their neighbors. I especially want to thank Fred Korte for 68 years of service.”

On April 11, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) were at the demolition of 35 Hetty’s Path in Centereach.

“People in this neighborhood work hard to maintain their homes and it’s a shame when eyesores like this negatively impact property values and their quality of life,” LaValle said.

“Thanks to the assistance of the town’s law department, this eyesore has been demolished. I will continue to do everything I can to rid the

community of these zombie houses.”

The house, which has been vacant for more than 10 years, was a source of numerous resident complaints and town building code violations. It was demolished by the town in accordance with Chapter 73 of the town code, which provides a fast track to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The county reimburses the town and then they collect the money from the property owner.

A lesson in sugar, short and sweet (part one: the players) Your turn

BY chris zenYuh I have had the privilege of teaching high school science (biology, chemistry and physics) for the last thirty years. For the last ten years, I’ve had the additional privilege and responsibility of developing and teaching an elective we simply call “Food Science.” It’s not your usual health class dietary guidelines, nor does it rehash the familiar mantras of counting calories and exercising to balance intake.

Instead, we study the cultural, historical, scientific, political and economic contexts of our food system and how that system impacts our environments, both external and internal.

This in turn enables students to make much more informed decisions about what they want to put in their bodies.

When it comes to sugars, confusion is the name of the game. There are dozens of ingredients that mark the presence of sugars

in our food: maltodextrin, dextrose, invert sugar, cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup and starch, to name a few. Regardless of what the food industry calls them, your body sees basically three end products of their digestion: glucose, fructose and galactose. Which ones you eat, and how much, will dictate both their value and their danger to you.

You may have heard of three additional sugars — lactose, sucrose and maltose. Lactose is a combination of one glucose and one galactose. Also known as “milk sugar,” lactose is the nemesis of lactose-intolerant individuals who lack sufficient quantities of the enzyme that can digest it. Instead, bacteria that reside in their intestines get to process it, making painful amounts of gas as a by-product. Galactose can be converted to glucose in your body, but most individuals do not consume enough dairy to make this a source of concern.

Maltose is another type of sugar. It is a pairing of two glucose units and is the namesake for maltodextrin, etc. Consuming foods with maltose adds glucose to your diet — worth keeping track of as part of your total glucose consumption.

However, the most likely source of sugars in your diet is either sucrose or high fructose corn syrup. Sucrose, known also as table sugar, can be derived from sugar cane (cane sugar) or sugar beets (sugar.) Like lactose and maltose, sucrose is a paired structure, made of one glucose subunit and one fructose subunit.

Regardless of the marketing efforts by the Sugar Association and the Corn Refiners Association to make you believe one is better for you than the other, they end up, metabolically, in a virtual tie. Debating which to consume is a distraction from the consequences of consuming too much of either, or both.

The consumption of sugar (the term is legally owned by the Sugar Association as the sole name for sucrose) used to be limited by the relative expense and difficulty in obtaining it from its tropical source. Now the record levels of corn production in America have made it relatively cheap to produce and distribute sugar’s nearly identical-tasting competitor, high fructose corn syrup. You can find it in soda for sure, but also in pickles, peanut butter, ketchup and pretty much anywhere

sugar might be used for additional appeal to consumers.

This has paved the way for the combined consumption of these sweeteners to reach more than 150 pounds per year per person in America. This far surpasses the 60 pounds per year considered by some experts to be the maximum amount that can be metabolized without ill consequences including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver, cataracts, personality and cognitive dysfunction, some cancers and (by the way) obesity.

Tying glucose and fructose consumption to the metabolic consequences noted above requires further discussion. And now, you are properly prepared for those lessons. As we say in Food Science class, “Chow!”

Mad Dogs maintain No. 2 spot in Division I standings

First, Middle Country’s girls’ lacrosse team outscored Riverhead 16-9 in an April 15 win.

Senior midfielders Ava Barry, Amanda Game 1 Masullo and Jamie Ortega tallied three goals each in a shutout first half of Riverhead.

“We’ve practiced really hard and we Game 2 had a couple of tough games this week, but we just play every team like they’re the best,” said Barry, who is Boston College-bound in September, after the first win. “We always have to play like that.”

That’s because after a 16-2 2016 season, and with the top lacrosse recruit in the nation, according to Inside Lacrosse, in Ortega, Middle Country plays with a target on its back.

But both teams were 4-1 in Division I heading into the contest. Riverhead had difficulty clearing the ball, and Ortega said her team had to capitalize on her opponent’s missteps.

“You can never take anyone lightly,” said Ortega, who will play for the University of North Carolina in the fall. “Even though they lost to teams that we beat that doesn’t mean anything. Anyone can win on any given day, and we knew they were a good team, so we had to play up to par.”

After a Riverhead goal eliminated the shutout, Ortega found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the day. On a leaping cut in front of the cage, sophomore Sophie Alois

redirected a feed and fired a shot at the cage that was her hat trick goal.

“We sort of let them come back and we held em off at the end,” said Alois, who has committed to the University of Michigan.

“They played better than I expected but we adapted to that well.”

Middle Country head coach Lindsay Dolson worked in her bench players the rest of the way, as Riverhead slowly chipped away at the deficit.

“Riverhead, they’re a little bit young with a similar record, so we had to play fast on offense moving it around — keeping the ball hot — not stopping and settling,” she said.

Senior Amy Hofer’s goal put her team ahead by 10, which triggered a running clock, but Riverhead slowed it back to normal after six unanswered goals helped the Blue Waves to a 16-7 margin.

Middle Country goalkeeper Emily Walsh got busy between the pipes and made seven saves to help preserve the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Indelicato added two saves.

Still, Walsh noticed a need for improvement.

“I’m working on getting better and building my confidence,” the senior said. “I’m working on my low shots because I struggled with that in our last game.”

Ortega also finished with four assists, Masullo had three and Alois and Barry had one apiece. Hofer finished the morning with two goals, and junior Jordyn Juvelier found the net once and had two assists.

Then, the Mad Dogs made short work of Connetquot April 18.

Ortega and Masullo both had five goals and three assists to lead Middle Country, now 6-1 in Suffolk I.

“We’ve learned to not predict what we think they’ll be like so we always come out hard,” said Masullo, who is headed to Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus after graduation. “We don’t underestimate any team.”

Barry had two goals and three assists, Alois and Hofer each finished with a hat trick

and five other players scored goals in the win.

“If we play the way we’re capable of we’re the stronger team,” Dolson said.

Middle Country travels to longtime foe West Islip April 20 for a 4 p.m. matchup.

The Lions have eliminated the Mad Dogs in each of the last three seasons.

Stony Brook University students may benefit from the Excelsior Scholarship program.

Free ride or helping hand Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has announced that the Excelsior Scholarship program is included in the 2018 State Budget, providing residents who meet certain criteria free tuition at state colleges. But on closer look, this program doesn’t wipe away all costs of getting a higher education.

While the scholarship program provides free tuition, there are many costs it doesn’t cover, like additional fees, room and board, and textbooks, which combined can be as prohibitive a cost as tuition. In other words, it won’t be the free ride many might think it is when they hear “free tuition.”

Recipients must also meet several requirements, including attending a CUNY or SUNY school full time, completing degree requirements in two or four years and having a household income of less than $100,000 this year and less than $125,000 by 2019.

After college, students will be required to remain working in the state for as many years as they receive the funds. And while in school, students must maintain satisfactory grades to keep their tuition free.

Even if the scholarship covered all college costs, is an experience such as educating oneself ever free? Education is always an investment of valuable time and energy, and depending on the courses one takes, that investment of time and energy can be an enormous one.

While movies about fraternity or sorority members partying or running wild on campus may make for hilarious stories, in real life the majority of students can be found in lecture halls or in their dorm rooms studying for the next big exam.

Being forced to “rough it” is not a prerequisite for success in college or for appreciation of a high quality education.

The Excelsior Scholarship program will create more opportunities to provide students with the tools they need to achieve their future goals, no matter what he or she or their family’s financial situation may be. The cost of college has become a heavy burden on many of today’s families, and for many careers an education beyond high school is required.

Excelsior indicates something of superior quality. Let’s give our future students, no matter what their financial situation may be, the opportunity to afford an education of superior quality by lightening their load, even if it’s only a little lighter.

Last year, I was blessed with the opportunity to save a life, and what made it even more special was that it was the life of a friend I’ve known since we were teenagers. My story is not unique, but it’s one that I like to share with people to help increase awareness of the need for organ donors. All one has to do in order to understand is look at the numbers: • 25 million Americans have kidney disease.

• 475,000 Americans are on dialysis.

• More than 100,000 people are waiting list for a kidney transplant.

• There has been a 20 percent increase of people on the kidney transplant waiting list since 2005.

• Each year 5,000 people in the U.S. die waiting for a transplant.

My own experience as a kidney donor and the reality of these numbers are what led me to participate in the Rogosin Institute’s Organ Donation and Access to Transplantation Roundtable event.

As a councilwoman in the Town of Brookhaven, a large municipality of 500,000 residents located in central Long Island, I spend much of my time helping to improve the quality of life for people in the community. Each day, I meet with people to talk about a whole range of issues from potholes and barking dogs to land re-zoning, downtown revitalization and protecting the environment. Hardly life and death situations, but important nonetheless. So, when my husband John and I planned to meet my longtime friend, Tom D’Antonio and his wife Cheryl at the Huntington Lighthouse Festival in September 2015, I certainly was not expecting to begin a life-altering journey that continues to this day.

I have been very familiar with his nearly lifelong struggle to control type 1 diabetes while living dayto-day with kidney disease. Even when he’s been faced with what appeared to be insurmountable odds, his spirit, optimism and determination have been inspiring. So much so that when he told me about his search for a kidney donor, I made a commitment right then and there to “share the spare” with my friend.

Gratefully, my husband John and my children provided their unwavering support for this very important, personal decision. Fast forward to April 2016 and I am recovering at New York PresbyterianWeil Cornell Hospital, thankful that the transplant went off without a hitch. I was most happy to know that Tom was also recovering well after the surgery.

More than eight months later, Tom and I are in good health, and

we’re both back to work. He with his new kidney and me with a new appreciation of the challenges that face thousands of people in need of a healthy kidney before time runs out. By “sharing the spare,” I was able to save my friend’s life, and I thank the doctors and staff at the Rogosin Institute for being there for Tom and me. Their personal and community approach to research and care has improved the quality of life for patients and their families for more than 60 years, and now I am proud to be part of the Rogosin Institute family.

Protect your private browsing history In the 21st century, it is so important that we are able to maintain our privacy on the internet. Since the founding of our nation, we have valued personal privacy as an essential right, and in the modern age, the internet should be included under the same protections. What I do on the web is my own business, and the thought that my information may be bought and sold is horrifying. In case you had not heard, the House of Representatives recently voted on S.J. Resolution 34, which would roll back privacy protections on the internet. Thankfully, our representative, Lee Zeldin, voted against this legislation.

This resolution would overturn a Federal Communications Commission rule which requires a consumer’s consent before an internet provider sells that person’s data. Essentially, a corporation like Verizon or Optimum may have the power to sell your history without you knowing and without your permission. This is a breach of privacy.

Worse still is how the FCC might be banned from creating similar protections in the years going forward. The right to privacy is a constitutionally guaranteed right, and this resolution violates it in every way, shape, and form.

I’d like to thank Congressman

Zeldin for going against party lines and voting no. I’ve always believed in people over party, and this shows that Lee Zeldin actually takes time to review legislation and make an informed decision before voting, unlike so many other lawmakers who simply do as they’re told by party leaders.

We need more legislators like him who recognize bad laws when they see them and will do what is right for our country. Shame on every representative who voted for this awful resolution. Let’s just hope no one sells your browsing history.

ave you seen it? In the pace at which we live our lives, it’s possible you missed it. I was at the drugstore recently and I saw it on the side of a box. It took a moment to process. How often does a product surprise you?

It had the potential to be a “you got your chocolate in my peanut butter” moment. When I was younger, my older brother, or No. 1 son as he’s been described on these pages for decades, used to

choke down even the ones that were spectacular failures because he didn’t want to waste food, and because who knew at what point a displeasing food might become an acquired taste? After all, how many people remember their first sip of beer? Did it tickle their taste buds or did they want to find water or a soda to wash it down?

So, back at the drugstore, I scratched my unshaven chin — I was buying razors to remedy that problem — when the image on the side of a box diverted my attention from important thoughts: How much longer would this take? Would I meet my deadlines?

Was I supposed to wash some missioncritical clothing last night for some must-win game today?

As I looked at that image, I could imagine the moment Igor came up with the idea. There he was at a barbecue. With his acquired-taste beer a few inches from his left hip, he surveyed the food on his overloaded plate. He had a thick cheeseburger on

a sesame seed bun, half sour pickles, an enormous mound of sauteed onions and mushrooms, coleslaw, and several Pringles sitting next to his burger. Igor works for Pringles and he won’t attend any picnic without bringing his favorite curved chip. The burger was on its way to his mouth when he realized he was missing something. He stood up to kiss his sister-in-law, maneuvered around his nephew who was bouncing a pink ball against the steps, and he and his burger arrived safely at the condiment table. On Igor’s way back to his beer, the pink ball rolled underfoot, causing him to turn his ankle and mix up the contents of the plate.

He hobbled to his spot and surveyed the damage to his food. His ankle could wait. Igor, like my brother, pressed on. He sighed at his precious Pringles. They were broken into tiny pieces, which was no fault of the distinctive packaging, and they looked like they’d been through a battle. They were covered in ketchup. Did he dare

Igor found the small part of a chip not smothered in ketchup and brought it to his mouth. Aware that every eye was on him, he nodded slowly, as if the taste was something extraordinary.

“Well,” his brother said, trying to be helpful, “why not, right? We put ketchup on French fries, which are also made from potatoes, right?”

Was it a weakness or a strength on Igor’s part that made him insist this was an inevitable combination that would become a must-have item for July Fourth barbecues? I suppose it’s up to us to decide whether ketchup-flavored potato chips are the next peanut butter cup.

If they are, maybe Pringles can edit a Seinfeld clip where George Costanza double-dips his chip into a bowl of ketchup?
