Welcome to the 19th annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival!

F

or the past 18 years, as fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Hailed as one of Long Island’s top ten events, the festival begins on Friday, December 5, progressing through Saturday, December 6 and ending on Sunday, December 7.

Produced by the Greater Port JeffersonNorthern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the Northeast, and, indeed, from around the globe, will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. We all look forward to the cherished traditions and new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. This year the festival’s festivities are brought to you by the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation (owner/operators of the Graceful Rose Restaurant in Port Jefferson).

Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life

as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities.

Dickens made his first trip to the United States and Canada in 1842, a journey that included a popular reading tour, and meetings with Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant and President John Tyler. His second U.S. reading tour in 1867 and 1868

included American notables Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Dickens’ American publisher, James Thomas Fields.

This year features the incredible Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center.

Stroll around the second floor to witness a collection of spectacular offerings deftly decorated by the participants. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear, created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, returns and should be on every person’s “must see” list — this magical presentation is not to be missed. Also returning is the Artisan Square, offering a glimpse of how handcrafted works happened during Victorian England, featuring artisans ranging from a blacksmith to a weaver in a completely decked out, heated tent.

The Village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ Street Characters and alive with a host of musical presentations sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons. Mantled with the opening ceremony, a horse and carriage ride at Dickens Alley located on East Main Street, the spectacular Festival of Trees, and ending with the solemn Passing of the Lantern of Life and the delightful Grand Finale Puppet Parade, a splendid time is guaranteed for all. The kit contains a fingerprint card, a physical description, a video, computer disk, or DVD of the child, a dental imprint, and a DNA sample. The Traintastic Model Train Exhibit This year we are presenting a wonderful, decked-out-for-Christmas model train exhibit located in the Harbor Square Mall off Main Street in Port Jefferson. The gated food court will be host to the layout that will also feature a Toysfor-Tots toy-raising event.

The Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at the different model train courses This is a family favorite and this year it

Lanternlight House tour This is the 19th year for the Charles Dickens Festival and house tour.

The Greater Port Jeffeson Chamber of Commerce will once again sponsor this popular event. In keeping with the tradition with this walking tour, all the homes have been built in the 1800’s and have historical significance.

The tour will concentrate on the east side of Main Street at the south end of Port Jefferson Village. All of this year’s homes are new to the tour. This is a real accomplishment because of the many years the house tour has been in existence; encouraging and getting news homes is challenging. Our homeowners have painstakingly preserved original moldings and have kept the historic integrity of their homes, creating a sense of the past.

A new feature this year will be an opportunity for ticket holders to choose just the walking tour for the ticketed cost of $25 or for $45, they will be entitled to attend a “Seasonal Cheer Gathering” at the new Old Fields Restaurant. Those ticket holders are welcomed to join in a

pre-house tour get-together for an hour of libations and savories from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Passed hors d’oeuvres, wines and craft beers will be served in the cozy atmosphere of the Peter Tunney Room. A limited amount of tickets are available for sale. All tickets will go on sale the second week in November.

As always, this very walkable house tour starts at 4:30 and ends at 8:30 p.m. Village roads will be closed for easy accessibility, so ticket holders can walk freely to all the homes. There will be a shuttle bus to transport those attendees who may need a break from walking. Tickets are non-refundable and payment can be made with all major credit cards, checks, or cash. Tickets may be purchased at the Chamber office at 118 West Broadway between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Phone orders are welcomed. Calling all gingerbread house enthusiasts and architects! Time to start your ovens! Suffolk Lodge No. 60 Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons will be hosting its 4th Annual Gingerbread House Contest during the 19th annual Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival from Dec. 5 to 7. Every year thousands of people attend this wonderful festival to see the transformation of Port Jefferson Village into a town out of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

All Gingerbread House Contest submissions will be on display downstairs in the historic Port Jefferson Masonic Temple throughout the entire Dickens Festival weekend.

Entries will be judged for their creativity, execution and originality by a panel of judges that includes celebrated local

artists and chefs. There will be fabulous prizes awarded for adult, teen and children’s categories, including a seven-night vacation at a luxurious resort in Antigua for the adult category 1st prize winner!

Dickens Festival Honoree: Jeffrey Sanzel

he Village of Port Jefferson’s Charles Dickens Festival has been a top-ten event on Long Island for the past 19 years. For each Festival, the Village of Port Jefferson chooses an honoree who has contributed not only to the Dickens event, but also to the community at large.

This year, we are very pleased to be honoring Theatre Three and its Artistic Director, Jeffrey Sanzel. Theatre Three, with its annual presentation of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” was part of the inspiration behind the creation of the original Dickens Festival and has participated every year.

We are truly a lucky community to have a respected live theatre right here in Port Jefferson. We thank Theatre Three and Jeffrey Sanzel for enriching our lives with superb performances and tireless community involvement.

Located in the heart of Port Jefferson, the theatre is celebrating its forty-fifth season of bringing the very best of live theatre to the Long Island community. For the past thirty-five seasons, Theatre Three has occupied Athena Hall, a one hundred and sixty year-old historic building on Main Street.

Each year, Theatre Three presents a Mainstage season of six productions, along with a summer concert series.

The Second Stage presents on-going events, including small plays, world premiere one-acts, staged readings,

improv and cabaret performances.

The in-house children’s theatre presents original musicals, while the touring children’s theatre offers original programs dealing with child-at-risk or educational issues. Theatre Three’s Dramatic Academy offers three semesters each year (Fall, Winter-Spring and Summer), with classes for ages six through adult.

Their Musical Theatre Factory presents two all-student productions each summer.

Theatre Three’s Artistic Director, Jeffrey Sanzel, has been with the company since 1989. During that time, he has directed over 200 productions, ranging from musicals (“Les Misérables,” “Next to Normal,” “The Boy from Oz”) to dramas (“The Diary of Anne Frank,” “The Laramie Project,” “Master Class), to comedies (“Play Dates”) and dozens of original children’s theatre musicals.

He is the author of “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust” and the co-author of two bullying projects — “Class Dismissed and Stand Up! Stand Out!” As an actor, he has been seen in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “I Am My Own Wife,” and, most notably, “A Christmas Carol,” in which he has played Scrooge over 1,100 times.

For promoting the performing arts and enriching the lives of our community, we are proud to have Theatre Three and Jeffrey Sanzel as this year’s 19th Annual Charles Dickens Festival honoree.

A HOLIDAy TRADITION New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841, when Queen Victoria married Germanborn Prince Albert. From that time, the decorating of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoity toity to the hoy polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition, having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled ‘round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree…

Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome.

f Charles Dickens Festival f “East side, west side, all around the town…” is the opening phrase of the song, “Sidewalks of New York,” written in 1894 during the waning years of Queen Victoria’s reign. While we won’t be playing “Ring Around the Rosie” or bemoaning the sorry state of the London Bridge that was, reputably, falling down, we do have a fantastic lineup of events from the east side to the west side of the Village of Port Jefferson for the 19th Annual Charles Dickens Festival.

When standing by the blinking light facing the water at the intersection of Main, East Broadway and West Broadway, traveling up East Broadway on Friday evening, December 5, will bring you to the fabulous Festival of Trees Celebration at the Port Jefferson Village Center. However, while gazing across the harbor, if the words, “Go west, young man,” popularized by American author Horace Greeley in 1865, come to mind, you will find our very own Charles Dickens’ “West Side Story” in full swing on Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, with three magical events. Please read below to help choose your direction wisely!

The Fabulous Festival of Trees opening night celebration: Come one, come all on Friday evening, December 5, from 7 to 11 p.m., to join our Festival of Trees Opening Night Celebration at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision expertly crafted and garnished … and not to be missed. The Rinx will welcome ice skaters with a special offer — bring in a non-perishable food item that will be donated to a food pantry and receive a discount on the skating fee.

Also presented will be a spectacular ice skating demonstration featuring actors in “Frozen®” and other character costumes. Finally, do you want to build a snowman? artisan square: The Artisan Square, sponsored by the Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation, will feature five artisans who will demonstrate how crafts were made during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing.

Led by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high quality, handmade workmanship. Our Dickens Festival artisans utilize 19th century tools and educate festival attendees in the creative process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they will engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life.

Santa’s Workshop PuRE JOy – FAMILy FuN!

andles f licker in the windows, beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Step back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the historical Drowned Meadow House.

Amongst the giant nutcrackers and Christmas presents, twinkling snowflakes appear high above this year’s elaborate confection display of candy nutcrackers embellished with elaborate confection candy turrets. The tour continues, as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom.

This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace. Anticipating “the night before Christmas,” she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is all

aglow as she looks out upon Winterscape. Oh my, how exciting! Santa and his reindeer appear through the glittering snowflakes. On the ground, snow has fallen, blanketing a magical, revolving confection carousel created with giant sugar trees and candy canes. Beyond, tucked in a forest of Alpine trees, you will come upon the confection replica of the historical Gamecock Cottage embellished with glistening sugar trees.

Departing Winterscape, visitors are greeted by Santa and his elves awaiting the arrival of one and all. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the magic of this memorable visit to Santa’s Workshop. Departing the Workshop, families will receive yummy chocolate chip cookies, compliments of Panera Bread.

The festivities begin on December 6 at 10 a.m. across the street at the Graceful Rose Restaurant

when Santa arrives, shares gifts with the children, and presents a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” before departing for Santa’s Workshop at noon.

‘BARNABy SAVES CHRISTMAS’ Theatre Three will present “Barnaby Saves Christmas,” now in its 11th year, during the Dickens Festival on Saturday Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. Come join Santa, Barnaby, Franklynne and all of their friends for a wonderful holiday treat. As our littlest elf and his reindeer friend set off on their journey to save Christmas, they meet some new friends along the way and learn the true meaning of Christmas, Hanukah, and the holiday season.

The Festival will begin in the late afternoon of Friday, Dec. 6 with the beloved tradition of the Lantern Dedication. Lanterns throughout the Village have been dedicated to honor the memories of dear neighbors and friends, and new lanterns will be the gathering place for family and friends.

Housed in the historic 128-year-old Athena Hall, Theatre Three will be presenting a delightful pairing of holiday productions. This year’s Festival marks Theatre Three’s 31st annual production of “A Christmas Carol.” A delightful diversion, this classic ghost story of the season has become a cherished tradition for many.

Performances will be held on Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 and 7 p.m. After the evening shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can have your photo taken with Scrooge.

Harbor Ballet Theater reprises “The Nutcracker” for its 23rd season at Port Jefferson High School. The beautiful fairy tale of Clara, the Nutcracker and the Mouse King is presented at 8 pm Friday and Saturday, with matinees at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. This year’s guest artists are Ashley Tuttle and Craig Salstein.

Christ Church Episcopal on Barnum Avenue will open its doors to all for the annual St. Nicholas Inn serving assorted soups and breads in humble Dickens style, with the added fun of their annual Chocolate Extravaganza and roasted chestnuts!

Scrooge’s long-suffering housekeeper, Mrs. Dilber, shares stories about life with the world’s most famous crotchety miser, untold before now! She will make Mr. Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” come alive with the use of her favorite co-star - you! Prepare for history, mystery, a wee bit of mayhem and high spirits! Come see her at the Village Center.

Climb aboard an old-fashioned 12-passenger wagon, pulled by a matched pair of white horses for a true Victorian experience. Festival favorite Oreo the Dickens Horse will also be on hand pulling his brightly-colored four-wheeled wagonette during the Dickens Festival.

A magical favorite returns to the Masonic Lodge.

The Great Wizard of the North, along with his sidekick Graham Quacker the mind reading goose, will amaze and dazzle both the young and the young at heart with his prodigious feats of prestidigitation!

The festivities will also include many returning favorites including stirring performances by choirs and harmony groups, and many other fine musical performances by area musicians and children’s groups.

We are also encouraging visitors to park in the LIrr lot immediately South and east of the railroad tracks off railroad avenue. the dickens Parking committee will be posting official dickens Festival “Jitney” parking signs for your convenience and it will be running from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, dec. 6 and to 7 p.m. on Sunday, december 7. We are also supplying a special dickens Parking map in addition to the larger dickens event map included with this special festival section. So, if you want to have more Festival and less roaming, please take advantage of our outlying lots. For those of you who want to find a space closer, metered parking is in force for the dickens weekend. at 25 cents per half hour, $2.00 buys you four hours of dickens delights and all parking proceeds are going to support the festival.
