Welcome to the 20th annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival!

As fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival.

This year promises to be the biggest and best yet! Join us as we celebrate the Festival’s 20th Anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend.

Hailed as one of Long Island’s top ten events, the festival begins on Saturday, December 5, running through Sunday, December 6. Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the North East, from all 50 states and, indeed, from around the globe, will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage for our emerald anniversary.

Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities.

Dickens made two reading tour trips to the United States and Canada, in 1842, and again in 1867, meeting with a long list of contemporary luminaries of the time, including Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, President John Tyler, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Dickens’ American publisher, James Thomas Fields.

New for this year is the wonderful “Let There Be Light” extravaganza, projected onto the front of Village Hall. This year also features the expanded Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear, will bring out the child in all of us. Created by

acclaimed confection artist Pat Darling Kiriluk, this magical presentation should be on every person’s “must see” list.

The Artisan Square, showing how hand crafted works were made during Victorian England, the spectacular Model Train Exhibit on the corner of East Main and Main, and a stop at CookieLand rounds out the big attractions. Many restaurants will offer Dickensian-inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open for extended hours for holiday shopping.

The Village will once again be rich with our troupe of Dickens street characters and alive with a host of musical, magical and theatrical presentations sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons.

andles flicker in the windows, beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Step back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the historic Drowned Meadow House.

Amongst the giant nutcrackers and Christmas presents, twinkling snowflakes appear high above this year’s elaborate display of candy nutcrackers embellished with elaborate confection candy turrets that make up the Workshop Room. The tour continues, as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace. Anticipating the night before Christmas, she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is aglow as she looks out upon the elaborate decoration of the Winterscape Room. Oh my, how exciting!

Santa and his reindeer appear through the glittering snowflakes. On the ground, snow has fallen, blanketing a magical, revolving confection carousel created with giant sugar trees and candy canes.

Beyond, tucked in a forest

of Alpine trees, you will come upon the confection replica of the historic Gamecock Cottage embellished with glistening sugar trees.

Departing the Winterscape Room, visitors are greeted by Santa and his live elves, awaiting the arrival of one and all. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the magic of this memorable visit to Santa’s Workshop.

Departing the Workshop, families will receive complimentary yummy chocolate chip cookies from Panera Bread. Thanks to Bridgehampton National Bank and Optimum Community.

The Traintastic Model Train Exhibit

Beginning in 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tons of coal at a breakneck uphill speed of four miles per hour.

Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe; the steam locomotive helped to usher in the Industrial Era in Britain and America.

Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!”

A family favorite, this year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-outfor-Christmas model train exhibit in the heart of the village at 415 East Main Street, featuring a variety of N Gauge trains.

The First Presbyterian Church of Port Jefferson Main & South Streets

The location will also play host to the Toys-for-Tots toy-raising event.

The Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, with the assistance of his staff headquarters, directs the Toysfor-Tots program, delivering muchneeded toys to children for the holiday season.

Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at different model train sets course around the setup. Special thanks to Dominick Parillo and New Bridge Realty for donating the building for this event.

Charles Dickens’ West Side Story Jettison your inhibitions, put away your sharkskin suit and come over to the Charles Dickens Festival’s exciting presentations on the west side of the Village.

Along with Santa’s Workshop, this year we are presenting CookieLand and the magical Let There Be Light holiday fantasy light show.

Let There Be Light:

With the Port Jefferson Village Hall as a backdrop, the spectacular Let There Be Light presentation will shine for the first time at the 20th Charles Dickens Festival. And what a magical presentation it will be!

Animated characters will appear in the front windows surrounded by swirling Christmas decorations, giant snowflakes and sparkly stars.

The Victorians were fascinated with lighting and used it to create magical effects for stage productions and presentations. Gaslight was first introduced to the London stage in 1817, replacing the venerable candle as the source of light. In 1881, electric light was first used at the Savoy Theatre in London. Electric lighting on glass was particularly popular. In 1892, the Drury Lane pantomime “Little Bo Peep” featured a series of large mirrors reflecting the procession of the 29 characters in the fairy tale. The first colored lighting effects of that time were achieved by directing lights through colored silks. This effect was used to color the set and create atmosphere, while enthralling audiences. Lights were also shone on gauzes to create fog or a ghostly feel.

Our own Let There Be Light presentation will be available for viewing Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, from 6:00 to 7:30 on the half hour, for 10 minutes of dazzling fun. Let There Be Light will be shown each weekend leading up to Christmas — weather permitting, of course. Thanks to Chick-Fil-A, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and Empire National Bank.

CookieLand:

This year the Harbor Master’s building on the harbor side of West Broadway (across from Santa’s Workshop) will host the new CookieLand cookie-decorating extravaganza. CookieLand will be decked out with an elaborate holiday motif to welcome the young and young at heart, offering an abundance of frosting and candy decorations in a myriad of styles and color options for the signature Sugar and Chocolate Cookie Decorating Kits.

Everything will be packaged for carrying, with extra candy, frosting and hot chocolate (with marshmallows, of course!) available for extra purchase.

Brought to you by A Cake In Time, CookieLand will be open between noon and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6. Fees apply.

Artisan Square:

The Artisan Square will feature five artisans demonstrating how crafts were done during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing. Led by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high-quality, handmade workmanship.

Our Dickens Festival artisans utilize 19th century tools and educate festival attendees in the creative process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life.

The Fabulous Festival of Trees celebration Come one, come all to join our 2nd annual Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center at 101A E. Broadway. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision expertly crafted and garnished … and not to be missed.

New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841, when Queen Victoria married German-born Prince Albert. From that time, the decorating the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoity-toity to the hoi polloi.

Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree. … Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!”

The Festival of Trees will be on view at the Dickens Festival and through the end of December. Dickens Festival Honoree: Pat Darling Kiriluk

his year, the Village of Port Jefferson honors Pat Darling Kiriluk, an outstanding volunteer with a deep love for her community. Her dedication is exemplified in her tireless generosity as she extends extraordinary goodness to others.

Born and raised on the picturesque South Shore of Long Island, Pat has resided in Port Jefferson for the past thirty years. She realized early on that she had found the special place she was destined to call home.

Under former Mayor Jeanne Garant’s tenure, Pat was appointed to the Economic Development Council, where she exemplified leadership. Motivated by Mayor Garant’s vision, Pat also served on the 2010 Vision Citizens’ Advisory Committee, the designs for Harborfront Park and the Village Center, and the Gardens & Landscapes Tours, to mention a few.

Pat has been totally committed in her ongoing efforts to pursue exciting endeavors for our beloved Charles Dickens Festival. She has been an aggressive driving force in her dedication to create the first Dickens Village Center Resident Evening. Among her endeavors,

the beloved historic Drowned Meadow Cottage. Passionate about her driven commitment to embellish the intimacy of fantasy, Santa’s Workshop stands as a testament to the storybook charm of Christmas.

Among Pat’s professional achievements, she was president of Darling Associates. Seven years into her successful marketing career, she liquidated the business in order to pursue a new career as a creative confection artist.

Impressed with her portfolio, the food editor of McCall’s magazine granted her the opportunity she had long sought.

Pat has achieved national recognition as a confection artist. She created display work that graced numerous magazine covers and made guest appearances on national television and featured appearances in the Mansions and Millionaires Designers’ Showcase. She has been commissioned to replicate buildings and historical structures numerous times.

Port Jefferson is so very fortunate to have a resident so generous in sharing her professional background and unconditional commitment in all that she undertakes in the village she loves.

Special thanks to Nancy Altman Guzetta Nan’s love of fashion and vintage clothing flourished into a livelihood that has had her in business in Port Jefferson for 40 years.

Originally located in Traders Cove, she relocated her shop to the historic Captain Henry Hallock House, a spacious Victorian on Main Street, in 1995. Her business rents from her vast collection of antique and vintage clothing and props, authentic period re-creations, and even modern designer ensembles for any occasion, from formal to fanciful.

Nan can be your fairy godmother for all of life’s memorable events, from christenings to sweet sixteens and proms to weddings. She has costumed adults and children all over the country and around the world for parties and celebrations, such as Carnivale and Mardi Gras, historic anniversaries and re-enactments, themed soirées and romantic weekends, and supplies items for movies, theatrical productions, documentaries, commercials, book covers, illustrations, and paintings.

Over the years, Nan has been a proud supporter of programs to educate about local history and celebrate the community. Her costumes, artifacts, and expertise have been utilized by several historical societies and groups for their events, including the Village of Port Jefferson’s Heritage Weekend, the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce & Suwassett Garden Club’s Annual Gardens and Landscapes Tour and Three Village Historical Society’s Annual Spirits Tour, a year-long celebration involving multiple events for the 350th Anniversary of the founding of Smithtown, Teas and Talks by the Long Island Woman Suffrage Association, mansion showcases, a number of historical presentations and exhibits at local museums, libraries, and other venues, immigration day and wax museum projects for schools across Long Island.

As one of the founders of Port Jefferson’s Annual Dickens Festival, Nan has been lending authenticity to the event since its inception 20 years ago. We thank her for her continued support.

We are once again featuring our own dedicated Jitney bus to travel to parking lots to the south and east of downtown Port Jefferson. The Jitney will carry Festival visitors to and from all the Dickensian action. We are also encouraging visitors to park in the LIRR lot immediately south and east of the railroad tracks off Railroad Avenue. The Dickens Parking Committee will be posting official Dickens Festival “Jitney” parking signs for your convenience. It will be running from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 5 and 6. We are also supplying a special Dickens Parking map in addition to the larger Dickens Event map included with this special Festival section. So, if you want to have more Festival and less roaming, please take advantage of our outlying lots. For those of you who want to find a space closer, metered parking is in force for the Festival weekend. At 25 cents per half hour, $2.00 buys you four hours of Dickens’ delights and all parking proceeds go to supporting the Festival.
