What historic buildings are on the property?

Priya Kapoor came to the Smithtown Historical Society in 2016 as the director of development and public relations. This January she was made interim executive director and was confirmed as the permanent executive director of the society in March. Her responsibilities include overseeing the 22-acre property and the buildings on the campus, as well as organizing and managing over 100 fundraising and community events held by the society each year. I recently had the opportunity to interview Ms. Kapoor about her new position.

How is Smithtown rich with history?

Smithtown is one of the oldest towns on Long Island, and we’re very fortunate to have a lot of that history still available to us.

The founding of Smithtown can be dated back to 1665; Richard Smith, town founder, was said to have made a deal with a local Native-American chief that any land Smith could encircle while riding a bull in one day would be his. By choosing the longest day of the year, Smith acquired the land known today as Smithtown. He was also granted land patents by the English government in 1665 and 1675.

Over 20 buildings throughout the Town of Smithtown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a rare treat to be able to walk down the street and see the same buildings your grandparents and great grandparents grew up with!

What are some things the historical society does?

The historical society puts on 100 events a year — everything from adult education classes (cooking and crafting, for example) to summer camp programs, annual fairs like the Heritage Fair every September, and we host a monthly Historical Book Club as well. Not to mention our Farm Program, maintaining our historical buildings, etc.

What kind of events does the society offer to the community?

Each event is a little different. We host events like the President’s Valentine Brunch and the Holiday Luncheon — opportunities for our members and the community at large to celebrate holidays with us. And, of course, our annual fairs: the Spring Farm Festival, the Heritage Fair and the Heritage Country Christmas Fair.

Again, it’s all about bringing our community together in a way that honors our history — we try to have traditional craftspeople like spinners, weavers, blacksmiths, etc. at all our fairs.

What types of programs does the society offer?

Our adult education classes often focus on crafting (we had a felt dryer ball making class, for example) or cooking (I taught two Indian cooking classes) — something educational in

nature that our community might not have a lot of experience in. These go hand in hand with our annual lecture series, in March and September/October, and exhibit openings at the Caleb Smith House Museum in March.

the Scout comes to the historical society. Through this program Girl Scouts learn about life on the farm and women in Long Island’s history.

What event do you look forward to every year?

We have adult education classes, we have children’s programming — I’d like to see more events that focus on families. We’ve run a few in the past where the parents help their kids build or create something, but those programs are definitely few in number compared to our other programming. In addition to new events, we also hope to come up with new initiatives to help the local community and give back to others.

I’m fond of the Spring Farm Festival, an annual event that happens in late April-early May. Our sheep get sheared, we have lots of traditional craft demonstrations (wool dying, wood carving, cheese making, etc.), as well as a robust vendor area. It’s really the first sign that spring has come back, and what’s better than that!

What programs have you implemented?

We try to come up with new and exciting events each year. For example, in July 2018 we started the Water Festival, which was attended by over 100 people. The festival included sprinklers and water games for children, and we hope to grow this event in the coming years.

This past year we also hosted the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce’s Project Haunt in our Rockwell Barn Complex. Local high schoolers transformed our space into a spooky museum of horror-themed attractions, as well as gave kids a safe space to trick or treat.

We are currently in the process of restoring the Obadiah Smith House, ca. 1700, which is the oldest of our properties. We have received a grant from the Preservation League of New York State for the initial assessment, and we hope to take this project further in the coming years.

Do you have a strong support system?

We couldn’t operate without one! Between our dedicated volunteers and staff, the community at large and our local government officials, we’ve got a very strong support system. We are especially thankful to our board members, for their guidance and support.

Are you looking for volunteers?

We are very fortunate to have a dedicated and hardworking volunteer base, and we express utmost gratitude to them for their efforts. But we are always looking for more volunteers to help us with our farms, grounds and events. We’re always on the lookout for volunteers. Our needs vary from mass mailings to grounds work, decorating for the holidays to manning an admissions table at one of our fairs. We’re also in the process of creating a volunteer orientation to help ease interested folks into the society.

We have four historic buildings on our main campus: the Roseneath Cottage (ca. 1918), the Judge John Lawrence Smith Homestead (ca.

1750), the Franklin O. Arthur Farm (ca. 1740) and the Epenetus Smith Tavern (ca. 1740). We also have the Caleb Smith House (ca. 1819) and the Obadiah Smith House (ca. 1700) under our care, though they are off-campus.

The Roseneath Cottage, our youngest building, serves as our main office; this arts and crafts bungalow underwent a complete restoration (and renovation!) when it became our headquarters. The homestead, while originally built by the Blyndenburgh family, became the family home and office of Judge John Lawrence Smith in the 1800s. As his health declined and he got older, court was moved from Riverhead to be tried in his personal chambers. It’s currently set up as it would have been during his life, complete with his study and parlor.

The farm and the farmhouse have undergone some change throughout their lives; while the oldest part dates from the early 18th century, additions were made throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The complex also includes a 19th-century barn (home to our sheep, pony and chickens!) and carriage house.

The final historic home on the property would be the tavern; the pre-Revolutionary War structure was originally found on the corner of Middle Country and North Country roads in 1972, after having been moved twice before. It was a popular stop on the Brooklyn to Sag Harbor stagecoach route in the 1770s, and was used often by British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Much like the farmhouse, the tavern has undergone some alterations throughout the centuries; the oldest bit dates to the 17th century, the main portion circa 1740; there were additions and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

What is so special about Smithtown?

Smithtown is a town that really cares about its history and celebrates it. We have community members come to our events and say that it’s a tradition in their family to attend; they came as a kid with their parents and are excited to bring their own children today. The support we get from the town government also speaks to this — they’re very aware that one of the most special things about Smithtown is its history, and they go to every length to help preserve that.

What do you love about your job?

I love that my job allows me to stay connected with the Smithtown community, while being able to add to it in a positive and impactful way.

Why is it so important to preserve our local history?

Smithtown, up until 50 years or so ago, was pretty rural. It can be hard for today’s kids to imagine the open space, farms, etc. that used to make up their towns, especially when they get a look at Main Street today! Knowing where you come from is important; acknowledging those who came before you adds meaning to where you are now. For us to see clearly where we came from, that’s how we appreciate everything we have today.

Wishing Santa Claus the gift of health

Dear Santa, This time of year, people around the world are no doubt sending you lists of things they want through emails, blogs, tweets and old-fashioned letters. In the spirit of giving, I’d like to offer you some advice.

Let’s face it: You aren’t exactly the model of good health. Think about the example you’re setting for all those people whose faces light up when they imagine you shimmying down their chimneys. You have what I’d describe as an abnormally high BMI (body mass index). Since you are a role model to millions, this sends the wrong message.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2015, more than 100 million U.S. adults are living with diabetes or prediabetes. It complicates the issue that approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight and/or obese. This is just one of many reasons we need you as a shining beacon of health.

Obesity has a much higher risk of shortening a person’s life span, not to mention quality of life and self-image. The most dangerous type of obesity is an increase in visceral adipose tissue, which means central belly fat. An easy way to tell if someone is too rotund is if a waistline, measured from the navel, is greater than or equal to 40 inches for a man, and is greater than or equal to 35 inches for a woman. The chances of diseases such as pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer and heart disease increase dramatically with this increased fat.

Santa, here is a chance for you to lead by example (and, maybe by summer, to fit into those skinny jeans you hide in the back of your closet). Think of the advantages to you of being slimmer and trimmer. Your joints wouldn’t ache with the winter cold, and you would have more energy. Plus, studies show that with a plant-based diet, focusing on fruits and vegetables, you can reverse atherosclerosis, clogging of the arteries.

The importance of a good diet not only helps you lose weight, but avoid strokes, heart attacks and peripheral vascular diseases, among other ailments. But you don’t have to be vegetarian; you just have to increase your fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods significantly. With a simple change, like eating a handful of raw nuts a day, you can reduce your risk of heart disease by half. Santa, future generations need you. Losing weight will also change your center of gravity, so your belly doesn’t pull you forward. This will make it easier for you to keep your balance on those steep, icy rooftops.

Exercise will help, as well. Maybe for the first continent or so, you might want to consider walking or jogging alongside the sleigh. As you exercise, you’ll start to tighten your abs and slowly see fat disappear from your midsection. Your fans everywhere leave you cookies and milk when you deliver presents. It’s a tough cycle to break, but break it you must. You — and your fans — need to see a healthier Santa.

You might let slip that the modern Santa enjoys fruits, especially berries, and veggies, with an emphasis on cruciferous veggies like broccoli florets dipped in humus, which have substantial antioxidant qualities and can help reverse disease. And, of course, skip putting candy in the stockings. No one needs more sugar, and I’m sure that, over the long night, it’s hard to resist sneaking a piece, yourself.

As for your loyal fans, you could place fitness videos under the tree. In fact, you and your elves

could make workout videos for those of us who need them, and we could follow along as you showed us “12 Days of Workouts with Santa and Friends.” Who knows, you might become a modern version of Jane Fonda or Richard Simmons or even the next Shaun T! How about giving athletic equipment, such as baseball gloves, footballs and basketballs, instead of video games? You could even give wearable devices that track step counts and bike routes or stuff gift certificates for dance lessons into people’s stockings. These might influence the recipients to be more active.

By doing all this, you might also have the kind of energy that will make it easier for you to steal a base or two in this season’s North Pole Athletic League’s Softball Team. The elves don’t even bother holding you on base anymore, do they?

As you become more active, you’ll find that you have more energy all year round, not just on Christmas Eve. If you start soon, Santa, maybe by next year, you’ll find yourself parking the sleigh farther away and skipping from chimney to chimney.

The benefits of a healthier Santa will ripple across the world. Think about something much closer to home, even your reindeer won’t have to work so hard. You might also fit extra presents in your sleigh. And Santa, you will be sending kids and adults the world over the right message about taking control of their health through nutrition and exercise. That’s the best gift you could give!

Suffolk Federal Credit Union opened its 10th branch in Port Jefferson at St. Charles Hospital, 200 Belle Terre Road, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 4. The event was attended by the CEO and board members from both Suffolk Federal and St. Charles Hospital as well as several Long Island dignitaries.

The opening of the branch follows the merger of Suffolk Federal and Long Island Community Federal Credit Union (LICFCU).

Armentano joins Art League board Kiwanis for the Holidays

The Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills recently announced the appointment of John C. Armentano to its board of directors.

A resident of St. James, Armentano is an attorney with Farrell Fritz, who focuses his practice on land use and municipal law and represents clients in both the trial and appellate level in connection with litigation matters involving towns and villages.

Armentano is a contributor to Farrell Fritz’ Long Island Land Use & Zoning blog.

He is a past member of the advisory board, board of directors of the Nassau Academy of Law and currently serves on the advisory board of the Touro Law Center’s Land Use & Sustainable Development Law Institute.

The Art League of Long Island is a notfor-profit visual arts organization that offers art classes and hosts a dozen exhibits a year.

On Nov. 14 the Three Village Kiwanis Club held a Guest Bartending Fundraiser with co-presidents Christine Intrabartola and Billy Williams bartending at the St. James Public House in St. James, who donated their venue and a portion of their proceeds from the event to Kiwanis. The band, One Step Ahead, also played and donated their time at no cost.

The proceeds were donated to the St. James R.C. Church in Setauket and Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson to help those less fortunate in the community for the holidays.

erence McManus is a retired social worker with a master’s degree from Adelphi University. A self-taught artist, he has participated in over 100 exhibits and juried competitions winning over 60 awards. He has had portraits exhibited at the Butler Institute of Art and at the Heckscher Museum. McManus is a signature member of both the Pastel Society of America and the Connecticut Pastel Society, and a member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in NYC, as well as other art organizations across the country. Recently, I was able to interview McManus at his studio.

How did you decide to become an artist and, specifically, a portrait painter?

Was there someone who influenced you?

When I was 10, I was thrilled to get my Jon Gnagy set of drawing instructions, but, seriously, I have not had any formal art training. The one art course that I took in college was a disaster because the instructor was an abstract artist and I was a Norman Rockwell fan! Instead, I have learned from books, videos, magazines and demonstrations and practice.

Do you like painting animals?

I love painting animals. How can you not love those eyes looking at you? But like humans, aside from the eyes, their body language can convey much as well.

I prefer to use my own photos since using the photos made by others is their vision, not mine. I look for how the light hits the face, creating drama and the feelings I wish to bring out in the painting.

Can you demystify the art of portraiture?

In painting a portrait, it is important to make sure the features are positioned correctly. I leave out details when starting a painting, except I paint the eyes in quickly. With the person looking back at me, I feel a connection with the subject. After I sketch in the positions, I apply the pastel or paint in the traditional manner, going from darks to lights. I frequently view the portrait backwards in a mirror to see the painting from a different perspective which helps to check on accuracy. Once

A good photographer can capture real emotion, but most are just an image of the person for that second. A portrait artist usually tries to bring out the subject’s life experience. The artist can add or subtract or emphasize different aspects to reflect this.

What is the hardest part about painting a portrait?

It depends if I am painting for myself or for a commission. When it is for myself, I am trying to capture a feeling more than accuracy.

With a commission, it is the exact likeness that is most important to the client, but I still aim to paint a good painting that can stand by itself.

It is the intensity of the emotion that comes across and how well it is done, regardless of the style that makes for an interesting and unique portrait.

When they heard that a longtime member, Hedi Flickstein, had received a disturbing report from her doctor, they came together to create a beautiful quilt filled with loving and healing messages. DIRECTIONS:

Changing the water at least 6 times, soak the cod in a bowl or pan of cold water for 24 hours in a cool place. Taste a piece to determine if it is too salty. If it is, soak longer. In a large pot heat oil, add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent. Add potatoes and stirring frequently, cook until golden brown. Add 3½ cups water to pan and bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover and cook 5 minutes. Uncover pot, add tomatoes, capers, oregano, parsley, garlic and pepper flakes; stir; gently lay cod on top, cover pan and carefully turning fish once midway through, simmer until it is cooked through, about 30 minutes.

Serve hot, warm or at room temperature with garlic bread and black or green Italian olives.

Men’s basketball rallies from late deficit, defeating Delaware for 10th win After defeating LIU Brooklyn 83-79 at Island Federal Arena on Dec. 12, the team went on to take down Colonial foe Delaware on Dec. 16.

Down 68-67 with under 90 seconds to play, the Stony Brook men’s basketball team remained unphased after its 11-point lead evaporated at the hands of the hot-shooting Delaware Blue Hens. The Seawolves received a go-ahead three from freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) and clutch free throws down the stretch to score the game’s final seven points and secure the team’s 10th win of the season in a 74-68 victory at Island Federal Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Latimer finished the day with 14 points, but redshirt junior Ak-

wasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) was at it again, scoring 25 points to lead all players in the victory.

He had 16 at the halftime break, nine of which came in a 64-second span, to give Stony Brook the lead.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game. They are a very good team. We had a lot of respect for what they have done to this point,” said head coach Jeff Boals.

“We did a really good job of following our game plan. Once again our guys were resilient. They bent but didn’t break and made a lot of game-winning plays. I’m really proud of our guys,” he added.

Up next, the team welcomed Hofstra University to Island Federal Arena on Wednesday night.

Women’s basketball earns 10th win with 70-45 victory over Wagner Seahawks After grinding out a tough 53-51 win over the Iona Gaels Dec. 11 at the Hynes Center, the Stony Brook women’s basketball team kept things rolling as they downed the Wagner College Seahawks, 70-45, on Dec. 15 in a home game at the Island Federal Arena. The victory marked the 10th win in a row for the Seawolves as the team improves to 10-1 on the year.

Three players got into double-figure scoring with senior guard Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) lighting up the floor with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward India Pagan (New London, Conn.) got right back to where she left off, recording 15 points and nine rebounds. Somewhere in between the to-do lists and the to-buy lists, some ambitious holiday revelers also consider making a for-me list, or the equivalent of a collection of pre-New Year’s resolutions.

Often appearing in that collection is a desire to live better, to stick to a diet, to embark on a healthy lifestyle and to enjoy the moments, big and small, on the horizon in 2019.

Often overlooked in the end-ofthe-year cycle is if people hope for the chance to get more sleep. That, however, may make many of those other goals — weight loss, better work performance or a calm reaction to events — more manageable.

Times Beacon Record News Media recently spoke with Stony Brook University sleep expert Lauren Hale, who is a professor of family, population and preventive medicine and teaches in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook. Hale is also the editor-in-chief of Sleep Health.

TBR: You recently published a journal article in Sleep Health in which you linked late night social media use by National Basketball Association players with their performance. Can you talk about that?

LH: This is a coarse estimate at showing that being up late is associated with worse outcomes. It’s not necessarily saying it’s only because they’re staying up late.

TBR: How much data did you examine?

LH: We looked at seven seasons of data. We were interested in how players did on games following late night tweets compared to games following no tweeting activity. … If your shooting percentage drops by 1.7 percentage points, that could be the difference between a win and a loss.

TBR: Have you extended this work to any teams?

LH: I’m talking with the Stony Brook Athletics Department to incorporate sleep hygiene into the players’ routines. We’re hoping to start with men’s basketball in the spring of 2019.

TBR: What are some sleep strategies?

LH: There is a list of sleep hygiene strategies. Many will seem like common sense. They include having a regular bedtime, which you calculate based on when you need to wake up and how many hours of sleep you need to get, limiting caffeine, tobacco and alcohol… [They also include] not eating too many heavy foods right before bed, exercising, preferably earlier in the day and reducing screen time at night.

TBR: Does the optimum number of hours of sleep change with age?

LH: Yes. Little kids sleep a lot and need a nap. As they get older, they lose the nap, but still need to sleep 9 to 11 hours. Teenagers need 8 to 10.

Adults typically need 7 to 9 hours.

TBR: How do you manage sleep in your house?

LH: We have young children, so we know how challenging it can be.

The younger one goes to day care and naps two hours. It’s hard to get him to

go to sleep. I’m not good about putting my phone down in the hour before bed. We do have a charging location downstairs in our house, so the devices are limited in the bedroom.

The children don’t watch screens in the half hour or hour before bed.

TBR: What’s the link between sleep and weight loss?

LH: Sleep duration is inversely associated with weight gain. Individuals not getting enough sleep are more likely to gain weight. The choices of food you make when you’re sleep deprived are worse.

Your hormones make you hungrier and less full. The choices you make also show less self-discipline. When you’re sleep deprived, you’re unlikely to make yourself a salad.

TBR: Did you see the recent study that links sleep and anger?

LH: It is consistent with some work I’m doing on teenagers. We know sleep is important for emotional regulation. I’m not surprised that it’s linked.

TBR: Should people who want to lose weight focus on sleep?

LH: There are obesity experts who have taken on sleep as one of the three pillars of optimal health: sleep, exercise and diet. Among those three, sleep is usually the one that’s the most overlooked.

TBR: How else does sleeping affect weight?

LH: If you want to stick to your diet, stay on a regular sleep schedule that’s going to give you the sleep you need. Eating during normal activity

phases — daytime for humans — prevents obesity.

TBR: Is there evidence that too much sleep can be bad for health as well?

LH: There’s not good evidence of a casual link between long sleep and poor health. There is strong evidence that there’s an association, due to reverse causality, that shows that sicker people need more sleep. If you’re sleeping more than 11 hours, that might be a sign that you have an underlying condition that is contributing to you needing 11 hours.

TBR: What is your next sleep-related study?

LH: My primary current research is about studying teenagers and the causes and consequences of their insufficient sleep. Some of the factors that affect adolescent sleep are screen-based media use and early school start times.

TBR: Could sleep patterns be an important indicator of health?

LH: We would love to see sleep treated as a vital sign, in which every patient gets asked. It’s not asked about and it’s not, in and of itself, sufficient [for a specific diagnosis].

It’s a good marker of well-being.

TBR: Did people believe a certain amount of sleep was optimal 50 years ago and has that number risen or fallen since then?

LH: The number of recommended hours has been relatively consistent over time. There’s just more science to support the recommendations now.

BROWNIE TROOP VISITS NURSING HOME

Have a holly, jolly Christmas — that was the sentiments and sounds of local Brownie Troop 1781 as members strolled units at St. Catherine of Siena’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center in Smithtown on Dec. 7.

Adorned with Santa hats, the Brownies sang holiday favorites while they delivered gifts to the residents that they compiled and curated with the seniors in mind. The bags were filled with crossword puzzles and other engaging activities for the residents to do this holiday season.

New Wellness Program at Our Lady of Mercy Academy Building Upon Years of Excellence

In an effort to provide exceptional academic support to all types of learners, new faculty will join OLMA with expertise in alternative learning strategies, thus addressing the need for differentiation. These added members will provide not only small-group instructional settings for students, but also co-teaching experiences for faculty.

This robust, new Wellness Program is the first of its kind among the Catholic high schools on Long Island.

However, Betters points to the fact that, in the summer of 2018, the New York State Education Department passed benchmarks that mandated SEL for kindergarten through twelfth grade in all New York schools, including both public and private venues. Betters hopes that additional schools will follow suit, providing their students with opportunities to thrive in ways that reach far beyond report card grades. As noted in various national studies, students who are exposed to intentional measures to achieve wellness, including SEL, are more likely to succeed in academics, careers, and life. SEL is powerful, and it not only can transform school climates, but also, in keeping with Our Lady of Mercy’s mission of service and social justice, can impact the issues that society, as a whole, is battling.

“Student wellness must begin the moment we first meet our students, during the admissions process. It continues as we partner with students and their families to carefully select courses that will promote academic growth for the individual student, recognizing her academic strengths

and the areas in which she requires further support.

Building a positive relationship with each student is the first step in a holistic approach to overall growth and wellness. At Our Lady of Mercy Academy, we aim to work closely within our Mission to provide a compassionate atmosphere that responds to individual needs. Through our new wellness approach, we endeavor not only to serve our current community, but also to make our ‘Mercy Experience’ accessible to all those who seek a faith-filled, all-girls education. We are carefully examining ways to meet the needs of the diverse learners who make up today’s generation of young women,” notes Betters.

Additionally, Betters comments, “Our school fulfills a moral imperative when it secures the well-being of our students. The Wellness Program at Our Lady of Mercy Academy affirms this commitment.” Funded through a lead campaign gift from Kathi and Paul Barnett, the program unites spiritual, mental, academic, and psychological wellness services under one umbrella, while offering students an opportunity to access a holistic education guided in the charism of the Sisters of Mercy.

Principal Sandra Betters is excited to announce new and progressive enhancements to daily life at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. The all-girls high school is implementing a comprehensive Wellness Program that aims to benefit all current and prospective members of OLMA. Building upon a decades-rich reputation of academic excellence, Our Lady of Mercy Academy is actively responding to the needs of its current student population and the growing needs of all young women. “No longer can academic institutions focus on content-building without addressing the pressing need for attention to overall wellness and the intentional delivery of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL),” Betters explains. Among the many benefits woven into the new Wellness Program is the opportunity for students to conference with guidance counselors, in small peer groups, during each academic cycle. The groups will discuss topics related to reducing anxiety and promoting prosocial behaviors such as empathy and kindness. Students will also attend classes that foster grade-level skills related to executive functioning and college preparation. Moreover, this initiative will implement a daily schoolwide break that will provide both students and staff/faculty an occasion to participate in mindfulness and meditation exercises, further prompting a holistic, healthful lifestyle for all members of the community. One of the aims is to teach important elements of self-care that will prove beneficial to students throughout their lives.
