pring has sprung and that means it’s time for the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce’s annual Health and Wellness Fest. Celebrating its 10th year, the event returns to the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, 350 Old Post Road, Port Jefferson on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ten years of healthy living; what a milestone for this event! To help celebrate this anniversary there are a lot of special activities planned. For the younger visitors there will be three super heroes walking around for photo opportunities. Have fun meeting Captain America, Wonder Woman and Batman! Face painting will be provided by professional face painter Joanie Baloney. A face art service provider with top-notch skills, both personal and professional,

she is an artist and longtime children’s physical therapist who is skilled and is sensitive in working with all ages.

For those who want to experience something more on the wild side, there will be Goat Yoga from 11 a.m. to noon. Goat Yoga is an interactive yoga class that helps you get Zen with goats. This class is suitable for beginners or experienced yogis looking to practice in a new setting. A certified yoga instructor will blend movements and gentle stretches with the playful antics of live goats. Try the “downward goat” or “stretching kid” poses. You won’t want to miss this unscripted one-of-a-kind experience. There will be a group of 12 goats that will assist you in your yoga positions. This will be great fun for those new to yoga or those who need more goats in their life!

he Royal Educational Foundation of Port Jefferson is a not-for-profit educational corporation established in 1993 for the sole purpose of raising money to support and enhance the educational process in the Port Jefferson School District and to promote and support creative and innovative teaching techniques, programming initiatives and the utilization of new technologies in the classroom.

Its board of trustees is comprised of community members who volunteer their time to organize fundraising events and to administer the foundation’s funds in cooperation with the school administration and board of education.

Since its inception, the foundation has facilitated the granting of several hundred thousand dollars to the district.

Recently, the foundation lost a vital member of its board with the passing of Jill Nees Russell.

She was a tremendous asset to the foundation, as well as to the school district and the greater Port Jefferson village community. She was a kind, caring and positive person who focused her energy on making Port Jefferson a better place. She led by example, was instrumental in moving many projects forward (new PTA events like the Science Fair and The Green Team, village programs like the Boater’s Maritime Festival, Heritage Weekend, Festival of Trees and

At this time, the Royal Education Foundation takes special pride in announcing the renaming of the annual community walkrun event in Jill’s honor. Commencing with this year’s Family Fun Run, the event will be known as the Jill Nees Russell Power of One Family Fun Run! The Power of One Award could not have a better namesake as Jill was the personification of its required attributes. The award inscription reads in part: “The little things you do each day have the power to affect a great many people. You inspire us with your willingness and ability to help others. You take on the world, one day at a time, continuously searching for a way to make things better…”

This year will be the sixth time that the Royal Educational Foundation will present the award in conjunction with the annual Family Fun Run. The foundation is pleased to hold this event alongside the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce’s annual Health and Wellness Fest and looks to continue this partnership in the future.

The Fun Run was started as a way to encourage physical activity and to celebrate the positive influence we can have on one another within our families and the community.

The Power of One Award is presented to an outstanding community member who positively impacts the lives of those he/she touches on a daily basis. Past award recipients were Thomas Meehan, Richard Anderson, Deidre Filippi, Jesse Rosen and Christian Neubert. This year, the recipient of the Jill Nees Russell Power of One Award is Anthony Butera. Butera is an elementary school teacher in the district; heads the HS/ MS drama program; and regularly volunteers

Jill was a kind, caring and positive person who focused her energy on making Port Jefferson a better place. for the Dickens Festival, the Harbor Ballet Theater’s “Nutcracker” production and with Theatre Three. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be used to enhance the quality of education in the Port Jefferson School District.

The Royal Educational Foundation invites you to participate in the 6th annual Jill Nees Russell Power of One Family Fun Run on Saturday, May 18. Whether you wish to walk or run, the 2-mile course is open to all ages. The run begins at 8 a.m. at the Port Jefferson Village Center, 101-A East Broadway, continues through the streets of Port Jefferson village, and ends in the High School Bowl. It coincides with the start of the Chamber of Commerce’s Health and Wellness Fest at 9 a.m. and all participants are invited, and urged, to attend.

Before printing, it took a monk about a year to copy a book using pen, ink and paper.

Gutenberg’s press could produce 240 sheets of pages per day. It was not until the 1820s that steam-driven presses became available to scale up the production of books and newspapers. It also required the introduction of paper mills to mass produce paper from discarded clothing or from wood pulp.

When Martin Luther led his Reformation movement and separated his followers from the authority of the Vatican, he ordered placing the Bible as the prime authority for religious instruction. He shifted it to German so it could be read by all Lutherans. This shifted printing from limited printings of scholarly or commercial technical books to mass production of texts where education was compulsory for all children and for mass production of Bibles so every household would have a Bible.

As in many instances of new technology, these changes could not be anticipated when Gutenberg first introduced his printing press.

Once made available, more books appeared.

More books led to more readership. More readership led to the spread of diverse views of life and society. Once more diversity entered so did a ferment of ideas on how we should live, what we should revere, and what careers would emerge as new knowledge spread.

For the scholar it led to the university and to higher degrees certifying an exposure to knowledge in dozens of fields old and new.

Knowledge can be conveyed by oral tradition or by written language.

The earliest writings were on mud tablets (cuneiform tablets in Sumerian culture) or paper (papyrus sheets in Egypt in the ages of the pharaohs). Paper replaced mud or BY ELOF AXEL CARLSON wooden tablets during the Middle Ages and some monasteries made copying texts (mostly religious commentaries and bibles) a major activity for monks.

Most of humanity was illiterate until the 15th century. What changed? One of the greatest inventions was movable type, which allowed words to be arranged from metal letters. They could be aligned into sentences and pages and then placed in a wooden press and smeared with an oil-based ink.

The inventor of this technology was Johannes Gutenberg (1400-1468). He raised the money from Johann Fust. Gutenberg’s son-inlaw marketed the books Gutenberg printed (the Bible being his first large-scale project).

Printed books became affordable to the new middle class emerging in Renaissance Europe.

They also became more diverse and translations (into Latin) of Greek texts were in heavy demand. The first biology text printed in 1476 was “De Animalibus” by Aristotle (translated from the Greek to Latin because Latin was the universal language of scholars throughout Europe until the 19th century).

The first book in a different language was a German book in 1461. The first book in English was in 1475. Euclid’s “Elements of Geometry” was printed in 1482. The first book printed in North America, “The Bay Psalm Book,” was printed in 1640.

The problem with an oral tradition is its vulnerability to change with time and a high risk of losing lots of information. Written language can survive if preserved copies are kept in libraries, monasteries or royal households. The explosion of knowledge that came during the Renaissance owed much of its success to printing.

Books were translated into Latin (and during the later Enlightenment into vernacular German, Italian, English and other languages). They

Civil War encampment brings history to Long Island

BY KEVIN REDDING Seven score and 18 years ago, in 1861, a battle between the Union soldiers of the North and Confederate soldiers of the South began, setting off one of the most tragic, bloody and integral events in American history.

Under an overcast sky Saturday, May 4, the Farmingville Historical Society brought members of the local community back to that time period with its Civil War Encampment on the grounds of the 1823 Terry House and 1850 Bald Hill School House on Horseblock Road in Farmingville. Visitors to the site were transformed to the 1860s to experi-

ence what life was like for soldiers during the Civil War, re-enacted in authentic garb by members of the 67th New York Company, the 9th Virginia Infantry, Company C, and 30th Virginia Infantry, Company B. The soldiers showed how meals were prepared over an open fire, ran military drills, fired muskets from the era and demonstrated a skirmish on the battlefield, a.k.a. Farmingville Hills County Park.

Guests were also treated to Civil Warera candy and other period-accurate sweets and the one-room schoolhouse was open for business. Schoolteacher Sandra Marshak, of

I Sing the Body Electric inspires at the Long Island Museum

he Long Island Museum in Stony Brook unveiled its annual juried art competition last Friday to rave reviews.

Designed to complement one of the museum’s current exhibits, Walt Whitman’s Arcadia: Long Island Through the Eyes of a Poet & Painters, this year’s theme encouraged amateur and professional artists to take inspiration from the written word — whether it be a poem, a quote, a song or a passage in a book, and turn it into something visual. The resulting exhibit is a wonder to behold.

Titled I Sing the Body Electric after a poem

by Walt Whitman from his 1855 collection, “Leaves of Grass,” the show features 78 exquisite pieces of art in a variety of mediums including watercolor, pastel, oil, acrylic, sculpture, mixed media and photography, all beautifully displayed in the museum’s Visitors Center.

The exhibit was judged by Ripe Art Gallery President Cherie Rexer; Jessica Valentin, artist and owner of Muñecca Arthouse; and artist Beth Giacummo. The winners were announced at an opening reception.

“I’ve been [at this museum] six years and this is the best juried art show I’ve seen here and I’m so proud to be a part of it,” gushed Neil Watson, executive director at the LIM. “From the start we all felt this [exhibit] was going to be something really spectacular,” added Lisa Unander, director of education at the LIM, before sharing the judges’ comments and presenting the awards.

Cliff Miller of Seaford captured first place with his oil on gesso panel piece titled “The McDivits,” which was inspired by Anthony Robbins’ quote, “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” Second place was awarded to Marsha Solomon of Baldwin for her acrylic on canvas piece titled “Orion’s Sapphire.”

Melissa Imossi of Madison, Connecticut, won third place for “Shadowlands,” an oil painting on aluminum, which was inspired by the film of the same name about the relationship between C.S. Lewis and poet Joy Davidman. (See the judges’ comments under each image.)

In addition, each juror individually selected a piece for honorable mention. Giacummo’s choice was “Passerine,” a diorama by Ellen Wiener of Southold. “The main element perched like a passerine reminds the viewer that our relationship with art can strengthen our stance,” she explained. Rexer chose Helena Weber of Bay Shore’s “A Noiseless Patient Spider,” created

A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY From Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. The semester is winding down at Stony Brook University and another remarkable academic year is coming to a close.

Our Main Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 24 when we celebrate the achievements of thousands of our students. We are particularly proud to be awarding honorary degrees to Alan Alda, a renowned actor and powerful advocate for science communication; Tarana Burke, the originator of the “Me Too” movement; and Greg Marshall, a leading international animal conservationist.

Stony Brook’s star continues to rise. The Ladders, a job search organization, reported that Stony Brook was ranked first in New York state and third nationwide as the “total-package college,” and the 2019 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings that measure an institution’s impact on society ranked SBU #78 in the world for our efforts to reduce inequality, increase gender equality, and foster industry innovation. According to U.S.News & World Report’s Best Grad Schools list for 2020, the College of Engineering and Applied Science ranking as a Best Engineering School continues to rise.

The Renaissance School of Medicine was ranked 56 (tie) in the country in the research category as a Best Medical School, and Stony Brook Hospital was recently named one of America’s best 100 hospitals by Healthgrades.

The International Friends and Family Program (IFFP), formerly known as the Host Family Program, is available now for community members interested in sharing their time with an international student. Both students and families can enjoy the enriching experience of a cultural exchange and gain a new perspective about the world.

Housing is again an area of campus improvement. A new facility in the West Apartments opened this academic year, and we expect to break ground shortly on one more building in that complex. The University is also actively working on a public-private partnership to bring additional undergraduate and graduate student housing to campus in a residential village setting that includes dining and retail relevant for our students. This complex will more seamlessly link the area around the train station and athletic complex with the rest of the campus. More details will be available in the fall. Stony Brook continues to be the SUNY leader in on-campus housing, and we are maintaining a room guarantee for students who submit their housing deposit by the deadline.

The University is working with the Town of Brookhaven on safety improvements to Stony Brook Road. New turning lanes, bike paths, traffic signals and sidewalks will be installed starting in June. These changes will make a positive impact for all who travel in that area, and we thank Senator John Flanagan, Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro for the funding and oversight of this important safety project.

I hope you will save the date, Saturday, September 21, 2019, for CommUniversity Day, a free showcase of interactive exhibits representing the wealth of arts, humanities, medicine and scientific expertise at Stony Brook.

SBU’s Alan Turner helps identify new early member of T-Rex’s extended family

ven the name Tyrannosaurus rex seems capable of causing ripples across a glass of water, much the way the fictional and reincarnated version of the predator did in the movie “Jurassic Park.”

Long before the predatory dinosaur roamed North America with its powerful jaws and short forelimbs, some of its ancestral precursors, whom scientists believed were considerably smaller, remained a mystery.

A team of scientists led

by Sterling Nesbitt, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech, shed some light on a period in which researchers have found relatively few fossils when they shared details about bones from two members of T. rex’s extended ancestral family in New Mexico.

These fossils, which they named Suskityrannus hazelae, help fill in the record of tyrannosauroid dinosaurs that lived between the Early Cretaceous and latest Cretaceous species, which includes T. rex.

The researchers, which included Alan Turner, an associate professor of anatomical sciences at Stony Brook University, chronicled the history of these fossils from the Late Cretaceous period, or about 92 million years ago.

“Getting a chance to understand the origin of something is compelling,” said Turner.

“Having a discovery like Suskityrannus, which helps us understand how the body plan of tyrannosauroids evolved, is super interesting.” The fossils reveal the “humble beginnings” of a group that would “later dominate North American terrestrial ecosystems.”

Indeed, the new dinosaur was considerably more modest in size than future predators. The Suskityrannus, which included one individual that wasn’t fully grown when it died after living at least three years, measured about three feet at the hip, weighed about 100 pounds, and was about nine feet

long, which made it more like a full grown male wolf, albeit longer because of its extended tail.

Scientists had found earlier tyrannosaur relatives from the Early Cretaceous as well as T. rex and its closest relatives near the end of the Late Cretaceous. They were missing data about tyrannosaurs from

the middle of the group’s history because fossils from this time period are so rare.

The researchers cautioned that this paper, which was published in the journal Nature, Ecology & Evolution, does not suggest that Suskityrannus was a direct ancestor of T. rex. It does, however, fill a fossil gap in the extended T. rex family.

The Suskityrannus species has a broad mouth and a muscular skull.

Additionally, the bones in its foot were built in a way that made it good at absorbing shocks.

As far as fossil specimens, the bones from this finding are “well represented” across various parts of this creature’s anatomy, including a “lot of limb anatomy and a good portion of the skull and vertebral column,” Turner said.

“These are features that were already in place much earlier” than this new species needed them, Turner said. They may have been adaptations that helped with their agility or with the environment in which they lived. Eventually, evolution turned them into the kinds of anatomical features that made them useful when T. rex eventually grew to as large as 16 tons.

“That’s something you see often in evolution: the way a species is using [its anatomy] isn’t always necessarily what the features evolved for,” Turner said. “Evolution can only work with what it has. What we see with Suskityrannus is that it had these things that became important later on.”

Turner’s role was to help compile and analyze the enormous amount of data that came out of this discovery. He explored how the number of species changed along the boundary between the first half of the Late Cretaceous and the second half of the Late Cretaceous periods, adding that the process of exploring and analyzing such a discovery can take years.

Indeed, Turner first saw the fossil in 2007.

“The studies take a long time and you can get lost in the details,” he said. “You do try and keep the big picture in your head. That’s the thing that makes [the work] interesting.”

Turner became a part of this work through his connection to Nesbitt. The two scientists attended graduate school together at Columbia University. They have been doing field work together since 2005.

Nesbitt explained in an email that he thought of including Turner immediately “because he is an expert on aspects of paleobiology and theropods, plus he is an excellent colleague to work on papers with.”

In the research paper, the scientists have created an artistic rendering of what this new species might have looked like. While Turner acknowledges that the image involves a “bit of an artistic license,” the image is also “bound by what we know.”

Nesbitt said this finding provides information about the theropods as a whole. “We really don’t know why T. rex and its closest relatives got so big,” he said, but researchers do know this happened at the end of the Cretaceous period, after 80 million years of being relatively small.

Turner lives in Port Jefferson with his wife, Melissa Cohen, who is the graduate program coordinator in the Department of Ecology & Evolution at Stony Brook University. The couple has two children.

Turner, who grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, recalls a field trip when he was 17 that encouraged him to pursue a career in paleontology. He was conducting research in Montana and he was exploring dinosaurs and sharing a sense of camaraderie with others on the expedition.

“I remember feeling like that was an affirming experience,” Turner said.

As for the discovery of Suskityrannus, Turner shared the wonder at finding a new species, something he’s been a part of eight times with dinosaurs in a career that now includes 11 years at Stony Brook.

“It’s always pretty exciting when you get to work on something that’s new,” he said.

Women’s lacrosse secures seventhstraight America East title

The No. 17 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team once again proved its dominance in the America East, earning its seventh-straight conference title on May 4 at LaValle Stadium, taking down UAlbany, 21-7. With the win, the Seawolves punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament.

“I could not be prouder of this group. This group validates what we do here. It’s not an easy burden to hold when you come in with the expectations of our program from day one and a championship is the expectation. I thought coming in to today we had a bit of a chip on our shoulder this weekend. I think our kids were fired up to show people how dominant we are,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

“I think this game in my time was the finest championship performance we’ve had. This group as a whole is a special one to me and one I’m going to

enjoy for a while because people didn’t believe in this group,” he added.

Ally Kennedy (North Babylon) led the way for the Seawolves with six goals and one assist and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip) put up six points from five goals and one assist and Siobhan Rafferty (Long Beach) added in four.

Bridget Considine (Rockville Centre) had a pair of scores while goals also came from Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai), Sabrina Tabasso (Lower Merion, Pa.), Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md.) and Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.).

Tabasso along with Kennedy, Sabella and Rachel Williams (Pasadena, Md.) were named to the tournament’s all-championship team. Anna Tesoriero (Huntington) made six saves on the day, eclipsing 500 career saves.

marks the 16th game this year during which Kennedy scored at least three goals.

The team had the advantage in shots (32-17), ground balls (17-10) and draw controls (20-10) and scored six goals from the free position off of its eight attempts.

Up next, the team will go head-tohead with reigning national champion James Madison in the first round of the NCAA tournament this Friday, May 10. The game will be held on campus at No. 1-seeded Maryland. The winner of Friday’s game will face the Terrapins on May 12.

Men’s baseball loses to Maine 9-8 ORONO, MAINE: The 5-6-7 portion of the Stony Brook baseball team’s lineup went 7-for-12 on May 5, but the Seawolves were on the losing end of a weekend rubber game for the first time this season, falling to Maine 9-8.

The Seawolves started hot, scoring the game’s first six runs to earn an early cushion. Junior Chris Hamilton (Schenectady) used the long ball to start the scoring with a homer in the first. Senior Dylan Resk (Ardsley) doubled the lead in the frame with a RBI double down the line.

Stony Brook added two more in the second as Hamilton’s RBI groundout was followed up by a sophomore John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners) homer to left center. Two more came in the third as the visitors’ lead grew to 6-0. Resk scored on a double steal and freshman Johnny Decker (Coeymans Hollow) touched home on a double play ball.

After Maine added one in the bottom half of the third and three in the fourth, senior Sean Buckhout (West Nyack) scored Tuccillo with a double to the gap in left center.

The Black Bears tied the game with three in the bottom of the fifth and then took the lead on a sixth-inning home run to right. Buckhout’s sacrifice fly to center scored Resk to tie the game momentarily but an RBI fielder’s choice to short gave Maine the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth.

Up next, the team’s last road series of the season is on Staten Island this coming weekend with a perennial NEC power in Wagner set to host Stony Brook for three at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The teams will play a pair of games on Saturday before Sunday’s series finale.

Reducing the risk of a stroke

Medication guidelines have changed with recent studies May is National Stroke Awareness Month, with a focus on raising awareness of stroke risk factors and prevention. This is valuable, since stroke remains one of the top five causes of mortality and morbidity in the United States (1).

As a result, we have a wealth of studies that

Medications with beneficial effects

Two medications have shown positive impacts on reducing stroke risk: statins and valsartan. Statins are used to lower cholesterol and inflammation, and valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure. Statins do have side effects, such as increased risks of diabetes, cognitive impairment and myopathy (muscle pain). However, used in the right setting, statins are very effective. In one study, there was reduced mortality from stroke in patients who were on statins at the time of the event (2). Patients who were on a statin to treat high cholesterol had an almost sixfold reduction in mortality, compared to those with high cholesterol who were not on therapy.

There was also significant mortality reduction in those on a statin without high cholesterol, but with diabetes or heart disease. The authors surmise that this result might be from an anti-inflammatory effect of the statins. Of course, if you have side effects, you should contact your physician immediately.

Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker that works on the kidney to reduce blood pressure. However, in the post-hoc analysis (looking back at a completed trial) of the Kyoto Heart Study data, valsartan used as an add-on to other blood pressure medications showed a significant reduction, 41 percent, in the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular events for patients who have coronary artery disease (3).

It is important to recognize that high blood pressure and high cholesterol are two of the most significant risk factors for stroke. Fortunately, statins can reduce cholesterol, and valsartan may be a valuable add-on to prevent stroke in those patients with coronary artery disease.

Lifestyle modifications

A prospective study of 20,000 participants showed that consuming white fleshy fruits — apples, pears, bananas, etc. — and vegetables — cauliflower, mushrooms, etc. — decreased ischemic stroke risk by 52 percent (7). Additionally, the Nurses’ Health Study showed that foods with flavanones, found mainly in citrus fruits, decreased the risk of ischemic stroke by 19 percent (8).

The authors suggest that the reasons for the reduction may have to do with the ability of flavanones to reduce inflammation and/or improve blood vessel function. I mention both of these trials together because of the importance of fruits in prevention of ischemic (clotbased) stroke.

Fiber’s important role

Medication combination: negative impact

There are two anti-platelet medications that are sometimes given together in the hopes of reducing stroke recurrence — aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel). The assumption is that these medications together will work better than either alone. However, in a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard of studies, this combination not only didn’t demonstrate efficacy improvement but significantly increased the risk of major bleed and death (4, 5).

Major bleeding risk was 2.1 percent with the combination versus 1.1 percent with aspirin alone, an almost twofold increase. In addition, there was a 50 percent increased risk of allcause death with the combination, compared to aspirin alone. Patients were given 325 mg of aspirin and either a placebo or 75 mg of Plavix.

The study was halted due to these deleterious effects. The American Heart Association recommends monotherapy for the prevention of recurrent stroke. If you are on this combination of drugs, please consult your physician.

Aspirin: low dose vs. high dose

Greater hemorrhagic (bleed) risk is also a concern with daily aspirin regimens greater than 81 mg, which is the equivalent of a single baby aspirin. Aspirin’s effects are cumulative; therefore, a lower dose is better over the long term. Even 100 mg taken every other day was shown to be effective in trials. There are about 50 million patients who take aspirin chronically in the United States. If these patients all took 325 mg of aspirin per day, an adult dose, it would result in 900,000 major bleeding events per year (6). Do not take an aspirin regimen – even a low-dose aspirin regimen – for stroke prevention without consulting your physician.

Fiber also plays a key role in reducing the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke. In a study involving over 78,000 women, those who consumed the most fiber had a total stroke risk reduction of 34 percent and a 49 percent risk reduction in hemorrhagic stroke. The type of fiber used in this study was cereal fiber, or fiber from whole grains.

Refined grains, however, increased the risk of hemorrhagic stroke twofold (9). When eating grains, it is important to have whole grains.

Read labels carefully, since some products that claim to have whole grains contain unbleached or bleached wheat flour, which is refined.

Fortunately, there are many options to help reduce the risk or the recurrence of a stroke.

Ideally, the best option would involve lifestyle modifications. Some patients may need to take statins, even with lifestyle modifications. However, statins’ side effect profile is dose-related.

Therefore, if you need to take a statin, lifestyle changes may help lower your dose and avoid harsh side effects. Once you have had a stroke, it is likely that you will remain on at least one medication — typically low-dose aspirin — since the risk of a second stroke is high.

Well, we’re very glad to have you.

Another time, another really nice lady carried me around like I was her baby for an hour and sang me nursery rhymes. She was very sweet.

So, we’ve been rehearsing now for a few weeks …

Was it hard to get certified as a service dog?

That’s very true. We thought it would be fun to find out more about you.

What do you like best about being a service dog?

I’m good! It’s good to be here!

Yes, we have. It’s fun! So many people and smells!

Where were you born?

Oh. I’m not sure. I know I came to my home from the Kent Animal Shelter in 2014.

And how old are you now?

No. I just needed to show them that I was focused and not rambunctious. Which I’m not!

It wasn’t hard. I love going.

Sitting on people’s laps. I like attention.

Could we talk about ‘The Wizard of Oz’?

Sure!

Is this your stage debut?

That sounds very nice.

Well, no … I actually I played Toto in an elementary school production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Mommy’s niece played a munchkin. It was fun to work with the young kids. But this is my first time on a real big stage.

And where is the house?

No. It’s not ladylike.

A lady never tells her age!

Of course. Where do you live now?

I live in a house. With doors. And windows.

It is!

It’s in East Patchogue. I live with my mommy, Dawn, and my six doggie siblings.

What’s that like?

It’s really terrific! Some of my siblings are big and some are small. The littlest is five pounds.

The biggest is ninety-two pounds!

That’s a big family.

Mommy has also fostered a lot of other doggies. I’ve lived with twenty-seven foster doggies since I came to live there.

That’s great. Do you have a favorite sibling?

Well, I’m the Princess so …

Got it.

I like Mommy best. I share my toys and bedding with my brothers and sisters but I don’t share my Mommy’s right cheek for sleeping time.

Fair enough.

Do you have any cheese?

Uh, no. Not right now. But I’ll get some.

I understand you have a job.

It’s kind of a job but it’s more than that. When Mommy’s daddy went into a nursing home, Mommy brought me for visits. After Grandpa came home, Mommy decided to keep bringing me there on Sundays. So I become a service dog. I like the people SOOOOO much. I spend most of my time with the people who don’t have visitors or lots of family.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like getting out of the house by going grocery shopping or to the movies. I like to go out.

I like dressing up. I’m a bit girly. I don’t like bows in my hair but I like sweaters.

I like to eat. Liverwurst. Cheese. Bacon. Cheese.

Seiskaya Ballet will present its 40th annual Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc. (BESFI) on Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook.

The program will feature two noted guest artists: Alvin Tovstogray who is appearing courtesy of Oklahoma City Ballet and Daniel Wagner formerly with the Cincinnati Ballet. They will be paired with Seiskaya Ballet principal dancers Diana Atoian, Jenna Lee, Brianna Jimenez, Graciela Carrero-Sagona and Lara Caraiani and with first soloists Eva Pyrros, Julia Virnelli and Jordan Jaramillo in a series of exciting pas de deux.

The tragic love story of Nikiya and Solor embodied in a oneact divertissement of the ballet “La Bayadère” will round out an outstanding evening of classical pas. Choreographer Vaso Kikna’s staging of “La Bayadère Divertissement” captures the verve, anguish and pathos of the full-length version. Tovs-

togray imbues the male lead role of Solor with passion opposite the seductive Nikiya and the regal Gamzatti alternately danced by Atoian and Lee. The Flower Festival en Genzano Pas, La Esmeralda Pas, Raymonda Pas, Giselle Peasant Pas and Grand Pas Classique will provide a wide breadth of styles from jaunty to bravura to ebullient.

As always, a sprinkling of contemporary works and a character ballet are also on the program. Choreographed especially for BESFI by Helena Sgouramani, “Altalena” is a new contemporary work that highlights the dancers range. The ever popular Kazachok will occupy the character ballet spot.

‘A picture is a poem without words.’ – Horace

Hundreds of families filed into Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in Rocky Point on May 2 for the school’s annual School Art Exhibition, courtesy of art teacher Laura Goelz, who spent her spring break selecting, mounting and hanging her students’ artistic works. The Measles Outbreak What You Need to Know Sharon Nachman, MD, is an international leader in the area of pediatric infectious diseases.

In light of the recent measles outbreak in the U.S., here’s what Dr. Nachman wants parents to know.

Wasn’t measles thought to have been eliminated in the U.S.?

Yes. However, a rise in unvaccinated people has led to the current measles outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as of April 26, 2019 there have been 704 cases of measles reported in the United States this year. This is the greatest number of cases since the disease was thought to have been eradicated here in 2000.

How is the measles being spread?

The most recent outbreak has been traced to overseas travelers who contracted the virus and then visited or returned to the U.S. The disease then further spread in communities where there are unvaccinated people.

Who could get the measles?

Anyone who hasn’t been properly vaccinated or who hasn’t already had a medically confirmed case of the measles. In addition, these groups are also considered vulnerable: • Infants too young to get vaccinated • People with weakened immune systems as a result of certain diseases including diabetes, cancer and AIDS • People who, for medical reasons, such as being pregnant, are unable to get vaccinated • People who received certain medicines and/or treatments, such as monoclonals, anticancer drugs, radiation therapy and stem cell or organ transplants • Elderly people whose previous vaccine immunity may have worn off • People born between 1957 and 1985

Note: People born in the U.S. before 1957 are considered at low risk. They should speak with their doctor to see if vaccination is recommended.

How contagious is measles?

Very. The measles virus is spread through the air, can travel more than 60 feet and live in a room for several hours. Even if you have been exposed, if you get the vaccine quickly, you may be able to avoid coming down with measles. But you should call your doctor first – don’t just show up at the office or at an urgent care facility – because you could expose everyone in the waiting room.

Is measles dangerous?

Yes. While some people may have mild symptoms, others can have severe or even life-threatening ones. These include measles pneumonia and measles encephalitis. One particularly disturbing consequence of contracting measles at a young age can be the development of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Patients can develop a severe brain infection six to 10 years after having measles, which can lead to profound mental and physical deterioration and eventually coma and death. It is estimated that 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 children who had measles will develop SSPE.

Will community protection work?

Unfortunately, there has been a widespread movement among people who believe that vaccines are harmful, so they refuse vaccination for themselves and/or their children. Or they think that because others are vaccinated and won’t get the disease, they will be safe. In addition, people may visit a country where measles is still a problem.

Today expecting community protection is no longer reasonable with the current levels of community vaccination for measles.

What are the symptoms?

Initial symptoms include irritability, cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis. The rash associated with the disease starts on the head and spreads down through the trunk of the body, usually at the peak of respiratory symptoms (two weeks after exposure), about three days into illness.

Is the measles vaccine truly safe?

Yes. The measles vaccine is actually a combination vaccine, called MMR, covering measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). It’s considered very safe and, when administered according to the schedule recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), can provide 97 percent protection from measles. What’s more, there are no and never have been preservatives, such as thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, in the MMR vaccine. A widespread myth is that some ingredients in vaccines cause autism.

However, multiple scientific studies have shown no link between any vaccine ingredient and autism.

How do I know if I’m protected?

If you think you’ve been exposed, be sure let your doctor know – and find out your vaccine status if you’re not aware of it. If you fall into one of the at-risk categories mentioned previously, or have contact with at-risk people, ask your doctor if you should have the vaccine.
