Old school treatment for atopic dermatitis

The weather is changing and I’m getting more itchy patients coming to my office.

Owners describe scratching and rashes appearing seemingly out of nowhere and they want relief for their pets. I explain to these owners that their pet most likely suffers from atopic dermatitis.

Now, before I discuss treatment options for atopic dermatitis, we need to clearly define what it is. Atopic dermatitis in pets is defined as “a chronic, itchy, inflammatory skin condition that occurs in genetically predisposed animals.”

What triggers this chronic condition?

Pollens, mold spores, dander, dust mites, etc. Basically, atopic dermatitis equals seasonal allergies in pets. There are more choices in treatment these days and I would like to briefly go through the options.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are actually classified as supplements.

However, they can be effective in controlling less severe cases of atopic dermatitis, or in conjunction with actual medications. The source of the highest levels are cold water fish so fish oil capsules or fish-based diets are recommended. There are also topical formulations of fatty acids that are applied directly to the skin. These oils prevent proinflammatory chemicals the body produces such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Omega-3 fatty acids are very safe because they are supplements but, in my experience, are rarely effective alone in treating atopic dermatitis. They work better in conjunction with some form of medication.

Antihistamines: Histamine is a chemical produced by the body which, in

small amounts, has a beneficial effect on the body. Histamine plays a role in normal cell metabolism. However, atopic patients produce larger amounts of histamine and larger concentrations of histamine in the body causes inflammation and terrible itching. Antihistamines block the histamine receptors on cells. These medications are very safe, readily available over the counter, and inexpensive.

Unfortunately, they are in my opinion, very variable in their effectiveness and the least effective compared to the other choices.

Corticosteroids (cortisone derivatives): Corticosteroids include medications like dexamethasone, betamethasone, prednisone, isoflupredone, etc. These corticosteroids of different names vary in strength and half-life, or how long it takes to clear the system. These are very powerful medications and this means two things: 1) they are the most consistently effective medications in controlling the itch of allergies, and 2) they have a lot of side effects.

The most common benign side effect is drinking and urinating more. Increased appetite and panting are also common.

However, when corticosteroids are used short term for what are considered “flare ups,” the medication is generally considered quite safe. However, when used long term even at low doses, the detriment of adverse effects outweighs the benefit of the medications. These adverse effects include diabetes, pancreatitis, a suppressed immune system, stomach and intestinal ulcers, organ dysfunction, etc (this is not a complete list).

Corticosteroids do have their place in treating what are called “flares” or acute, severe dermatitis short term in conjunction with a safer, long term treatment.

In my next article I will discuss some of the newer options used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. As always, consult with your own veterinarian before choosing any treatments or medications.

Hopkins and Colman are equally matched in The Father

The first question Anne asks: “What happened?” The Father’s inciting conflict centers on the exit of a home healthcare worker who has quit after being threatened by the man in her charge. When Anne confronts her father, he falsely deflects: “She was stealing.”

So begins the powerful, twisting course of The Father, as much a suspense thriller as it is a study of dementia. That question of “What happened?” becomes both thesis and driving force for all that follows.

French playwright Florian Zeller makes a sure-handed, sensitive directorial debut with an adaptation of his award-winning play. The Father garnered accolades for its 2014 Paris premiere; international stagings followed in forty-five countries. The Manhattan Theatre Club production received a Tony nomination for Best Play. Its star Frank Langella won the Tony Award for Best Actor.

Zeller has co-written the screenplay with Christopher Hampton; Hampton is responsible for the English translation used in the London, Australian, and New York stage productions. Occasionally, the dialogue sounds like elevated text. The screenplay carries a tone found in the works of many language-centric playwrights (Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Simon Gray, etc.). Whether this reflects Zeller’s writing or Hampton’s adaptation is hard to judge.

For the most part, the style works in this dream/nightmare world.

Anthony Hopkins plays eighty-year-old retired engineer Anthony (André in the play but renamed here for its star). He lives in his London flat, looked after by his daughter, Anne. But is it his flat or hers? Is she married or has she met someone and is moving to Paris? These are the ever-shifting questions as his reality is never fully grounded.

Layered onto this is that two different actors of similar appearance play Anne — predominantly Olivia Colman, but also Olivia Williams. Also, two actors appear as her husband Paul: Rufus Sewell and Mark Gatiss. Laura, a new home healthcare provider who reminds Anthony of his other daughter, Laura, is played by Imogen Poots.

Until she isn’t. The apartment itself is never quite the same, changing in the placement of a lamp or a new chair’s appearance. Morning and evening don’t so much blend as occur simultaneously.

Anthony obsesses his watch’s whereabouts; if a bit on the nose, the point is his loss of time.

Sometimes the action suggests several days; other times, it feels that a single day is playing over. The same uncomfortable dinner seems

to recur, but always with slightly different details. The plot is simple; the execution is complex as it goes deeper into Anthony’s ever-shifting sense of his world.

Hopkins’ work has bridged the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including stage, screen, and television. He has had an unmatched body of work. Performances include the Academy Awarding-winning turn as The Silence of the Lambs’ insidious Hannibal Lecter, the rigidly oblivious butler Stevens in Remains of the Day, the deeply felt C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands, and his monumental King Lear in 2018 (a good parallel reference to The Father). He has delivered indelible performances for over six decades.

His work in The Father is no less than brilliant. He brings raw depth to Anthony’s frustration and growing paranoia. Flashes of anger followed by clumsy recovery present with a frail honesty: “Everything is fine … the world is turning.” Moments of childlike abandonment — “What’s going to become of me?” — are followed by accusations and berating tirades. Hopkins makes Anthony’s loneliness and desolation palpable. Whether listening to opera or struggling to identify his son-in-law, Hopkins’ eyes are a window to Anthony’s pain.

In a heartbreaking moment, he cannot figure out how to put on a sweater, and then allows Anne to put him in it. In an oasis of clarity, he says, “Thank you for everything.”

It offers a glimpse of who he might have been. But what always bubbles below the surface is the question of which is the real Anthony. Is it this kind, appreciative man or the vitriolic and hyper-articulate charmer

who wins over Laura with an improvised tap dance? Hopkins, the actor, seamlessly navigates these shifts.

Olivia Colman’s conflicted daughter Anne swallows the constant slights, usually putting his needs before her own. In the threads in which she is married, Anthony’s presence in her home has caused her shaky relationship to crumble. Whether her father’s cruelty is something new or behavior she has endured her whole life is never revealed.

But Colman’s repressed hurt and roiling guilt is achingly realized with every glance, hesitation, and sigh. Her breezy avoidance of directly answering his repetitive questions with cheery distraction belies the brittleness underneath. The performance is subtle, and the wounds are real.

While Hopkins dominates, the film’s title is The Father. It is not just about Anthony’s downward spiral, but about the effect on his relationship with his daughter, about her loss in this poignant, relevant story. Hopkins and Colman are equally matched.

Unlike the more meditative Still Alice, The Father’s tension is constant and relentless.

The shifting of cast/characters highlights Anthony’s existential dread. Whether this reflects the experience of dementia, we can never know.

In the end, Anthony asks, “What about me? Who … exactly am I?” While the film arrives at a conclusion that answers this question, there remains a shadow of ambivalence. However, in the doubt and pain, there resonates a breath of love, hope, and care.

Debunking diabetes myths

Whole berries may reduce glucose levels the most Type 2 diabetes is pervasive throughout the population, affecting adults, but also children and adolescents. Yet, even with its prevalence, many myths persist about managing diabetes.

Among these are: Fruit should be limited or avoided; Soy has detrimental effects with diabetes; Plant fiber provides too many carbohydrates; and Bariatric surgery

All of these statements are false. My goal is to help debunk these type 2 diabetes myths. Let’s look at the evidence.

Fruit

Fruit, whether whole fruit, fruit juice or dried fruit, has been long considered taboo for those with diabetes. This is only partially true. Yes, fruit juice and dried fruit should be avoided, because they do raise or spike glucose (sugar) levels. The same does not hold true for whole fresh or frozen fruit. Studies have demonstrated that patients with diabetes don’t experience a spike in sugar levels whether they limit the number of fruits consumed or have an abundance of fruit (1). In another study, whole fruit actually was shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes (2).

In yet another study, researchers looked at the impacts of different types of whole fruits on glucose levels. They found that berries reduced glucose levels the most, but even bananas and grapes reduced these levels (3).

That’s right, bananas and grapes, two fruits people associate with spiking sugar levels and increasing carbohydrate load. The only fruit that seemed to have a mildly negative impact on sugars was cantaloupe.

Whole fruit is not synonymous with sugar. One of the reasons for the beneficial effect is the fruits’ flavonoids, or plant micronutrients, but another is the fiber.

Fiber

We know fiber is important for reducing risk for a host of diseases and for managing their outcomes, and it is not any different for diabetes.

In the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and NHS II, two very large prospective

observational studies, plant fiber was shown to help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes (4). Researchers looked at lignans, a type of plant fiber, specifically examining the metabolites enterodiol and enterolactone.

They found that patients with type 2 diabetes have substantially lower levels of these metabolites in their urine, compared to the control group without diabetes.

There was a linear, or direct, relationship between the amount of metabolites and the reduction in risk for diabetes. The authors encourage patients to eat more of a plantbased diet to get this benefit.

Foods with lignans include flaxseed; sesame seeds; cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower; and an assortment of fruits and whole grains (5).

The researchers could not determine which plants contributed the greatest benefit. The researchers believe the effect results from antioxidant activity.

Soy and kidney function

In diabetes patients with nephropathy (kidney damage or disease), soy consumption showed improvements in kidney function (6). There were significant reductions in urinary creatinine levels and reductions of proteinuria (protein in the urine), both signs that the kidneys are beginning to function better.

This was a small randomized control trial over a four-year period with 41 participants.

The control group’s diet consisted of 70 percent animal protein and 30 percent vegetable protein, while the treatment group’s diet consisted of 35 percent animal protein, 35 percent textured soy protein and 30 percent vegetable protein.

This is very important since diabetes patients are 20 to 40 times more likely to develop nephropathy than those without diabetes (7). It appears that soy protein may put substantially less stress on the kidneys than animal protein. However, those who have hypothyroidism should be cautious or avoid soy since it may suppress thyroid functioning.

Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery has grown in prevalence for treating severely obese (BMI>35 kg/m²) and obese (BMI >30 kg/ m²) diabetes patients. In a meta-analysis of bariatric surgery involving 16 randomized control trials and observational studies, the procedure illustrated better results than

conventional medicines over a 17-month follow-up period in treating HbA1C (threemonth blood glucose measure), fasting blood glucose and weight loss (8). During this time period, 72 percent of those patients treated with bariatric surgery went into diabetes remission and had significant weight loss.

However, after 10 years without proper management involving lifestyle changes, only 36 percent remained in remission with diabetes, and a significant number regained weight. Thus, whether one chooses bariatric surgery or not, altering diet and exercise are critical to maintaining long-term benefits.

There is still a lot to be learned with diabetes, but our understanding of how to manage lifestyle modifications, specifically diet, is becoming clearer. The take-home message is: focus on a plant-based diet focused on fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes. And if you choose a medical approach, bariatric surgery is a viable option, but don’t forget that you need to make significant lifestyle changes to accompany the surgery in order to sustain its benefits.

After a decade as SBU Med School Dean, Ken Kaushansky embraces new challenges

Like so many others, Ken Kaushansky had to alter his plans when the pandemic hit last March. Kaushansky had expected to retire after over 10 years as Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University and the Senior Vice President of Health Sciences, but the public health needs of the moment, particularly on Long Island which became an early epicenter for the disease, demanded his attention.

“Now that COVID hopefully is coming under control, it seems more logical” to retire this year, Kaushansky said in a wide-ranging interview about the pandemic, his career, and the medical school. In January, he stepped down as the dean, while he plans to retire as Senior Vice President of Health Sciences at the end of June.

Views on the Pandemic

Looking back at the immediate challenges in the first few months, Kaushansky said SBU did “extremely well” in caring for patients who were battling COVID-19 and was gratified by the school’s effort to catalog and understand the disease. “I’m very proud that we’ve been able to study this infection on all sorts of levels and make a real impact that has helped others,” he said.

Early on, as the medical team at Stony Brook met, Kaushansky urged the hospital to study COVID “to the hilt” and to “extract every little bit of data we can. We must keep all that data on all these patients.”

Indeed, Stony Brook has created a database that continues to grow of close to 10,000 people, which includes 3,000 inpatients, 4,000 who weren’t sick enough for hospital admission, and around 3,000 who thought they had the disease, but had other illnesses. “We’ve learned a ton from that, and it’s not just learning for

learning’s sake,” Kaushansky said. The demand for the use of the database is so high that a steering committee is reviewing proposals.

Stony Brook had heard from doctors in Italy that COVID patients were having problems with blood clotting. This symptom was particularly meaningful to Kaushansky, who is a hematologist.

SBU studied the symptoms and “did a trial to see if aggressive anticoagulants would produce better outcomes” than the standard of care at the time, he said. “Our [intensive care unit] patients who were on this more aggressive anticoagulation protocols had half the mortality” of other patients, so the hospital “quickly adopted all of our care” to the more effective approach.

The hospital preemptively used biomarkers to determine who should and should not get aggressive anticoagulation. A subsequent study using the database confirmed the school’s early conclusion. Stony Brook published over 150 papers on the structure of the virus, clinical observations, sociological interventions, and a host of other areas, according to Kaushansky.

Carol Gomes, Chief Executive Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital, appreciated Kaushansky’s hands on approach, which included participating in daily calls as part of the hospital incident command center.

She likened Kaushansky to an orchestra leader, coordinating the research and patient care, making sure there was “no duplication of effort.”

Kaushansky believes federal research funding agencies and policy makers will recognize the importance of gathering information about

this pandemic to treat future patients who might battle against variants and to provide a playbook for other health threats. “We really do need to prepare for the next one” as this is the third and deadliest of three coronaviruses, including SARS and MERS, he said.

Vaccines

As for vaccines, Kaushansky said Stony Brook was making it as “convenient as we can” to get a vaccination for health care workers.

As of about a month ago, over 80 percent of Stony Brook's health care workers had been vaccinated.

The black and brown communities have benefited from seeing leaders and role models receiving the vaccine. “This is beginning to erode the mistrust,” said Kaushansky, which developed as a byproduct of the infamous Tuskegee experiment, in which black men with syphilis did not receive penicillin despite its availability as an effective treatment.

Kaushansky added that a concern he’s heard from a range of people is that the vaccine was developed too quickly and that the side effects could be problematic. He cited the simultaneous steps doctors, pharmaceutical companies and others took to accelerate a process that didn’t leave out any of those steps.

Kaushansky participates in a group email interaction with prominent European hematologists. Looking at the data for the Astrazeneca vaccine, these researchers have calculated that anywhere from one in 500,000 to one in a million have developed blood clots.

“Not a single person on this mass email believes that they should stop the Astrazeneca vaccines for that kind of incident,” he said.

Kaushansky has been such a supporter of expanding the facilities and expertise at Stony Brook that he said the campus developed a joke about him.

“What’s the dean’s favorite bird?” he asked.

“A crane.”

Fixtures on the campus for years, those cranes — the construction vehicles, not the birds — have changed the university, adding new teaching, research and clinical space on the campus.

That includes the Medical and Research Translational building and Bed Tower, which started in 2013 and opened in 2018, and the Hospital Pavilion, which has an additional 150 beds. Those extra beds were especially important a year after the pavilion opened, providing much-needed space for patients battling against COVID. Gomes appreciated what Kaushansky built physically, as well as the interactive collaborations among different parts of the university. “An active collaboration and communication between researchers, clinicians and academics is a very different model” from the typical separation among those groups, she said. The work “reaped great rewards on the front end with the ability to collaborate to bring new ideas forward.”

As for the type of care patients received at Stony Brook, Kaushansky recalled a discussion over six years ago about central line infections.

The data came from a 12 month period, starting six months prior to the meeting and going back to 18 months earlier.

“How are we going to know why all those central line infections occurred by looking at data” from so much earlier, Kaushansky recalled asking. The hospital created real time dashboards, which is an effort that has “paid huge dividends.”

Kaushansky cited the hospitals’ top 100 health grade for three years running. These grades assess whether patients survive a procedure, have complications or need to be readmitted.

“You’re going to get the best care possible when you come to Stony Brook,” Kaushansky said, as the top 100 rating puts Stony Brook in the top 2 percent of hospitals in the country.

Apart from the buildings Kaushansky helped develop, he’s proud of the program he helped build for medical school students.

About six years ago, Stony Brook instituted a new medical school curriculum that had translational pillars. The school starts students in the clinical realm considerably earlier than the classic program that involves two years of basic studies, followed by two years of clinical work.

Stony Brook provides basic science, followed by earlier exposure to the clinic, with a return to basic science after that.

Continued from page B9 “It’s much more effective if you teach the basic science after the student has witnessed the clinical manifestation,” Kaushansky said.

These approaches are part of translational pillars in areas such as cancer, physiology and infectious diseases.

As for what he’ll miss after he leaves, Kaushansky particularly appreciated the opportunity to speak with students. He used to hold a monthly breakfast with four or five students, where he learned about each student, their career goals and their medical journey.

A former colleague at the University of California at San Diego, John Carethers, who is the Chair in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, visited Kaushansky as a speaker twice at Stony Brook.

Carethers saw “first hand the wonderful impact he had on students — knowing their names, and providing wonderful advice,” he wrote in an email.

The Next Steps

For a decade, Kaushansky said he wanted to create a course about the future of medicine.

“There are a lot of great innovations in medicine that are fascinating from a scientific and clinical perspective,” Kaushansky said.

He will work on a course for use at Stony Brook in the main campus, the medical campus

and for whichever program is interested in sharing these innovative medical and scientific steps in medicine.

He also plans to continue to be the lead editor of the primary textbook in hematology, called Williams Hematology. The textbook has gone through 10 editions.

Kaushansky and his wife Lauren, who is an author and education professor at Stony Brook, aren’t likely to remain on Long Island in the longer term. The couple has a getaway home in Santa Fe and may go there.

Kaushansky’s hobbies include wood working and running. He made a sofa when he was an undergraduate at UCLA, while his second significant work was a 16-foot sailboat he made as a second-year resident. He estimates he has made 40 pieces of furniture.

Kaushansky runs four miles a day four to six times a week. In 1990, he ran the Seattle Marathon which was the Goodwill Games Marathon, finishing in a time of around three hours and twenty-five minutes.

Culturally, Kaushansky hopes the school continues to embrace his focus on generosity.

“You’ve got to be generous with your time,” he said.

“No more can you say that you are too busy to talk. You have to be of a personality that takes pride and that gets the endorphins going from seeing the people you have brought, the people you have entrusted in leadership roles, succeed.”

How can I get my mother's original will?

THE FACTS: My mother recently passed away.

She had a will which named me as executor and provided that I was to get the bulk of her estate. The balance was to be divided between by two siblings. I found a copy of her will in BY LINDA M. TOGA, ESQ. a file with her other important papers but the original was not in the file. I believe my brother may have the original will since he was a signatory on her safe deposit box which he emptied before my mother died.

My brother and I do not get along and he refuses to take my calls.

THE QUESTION: Is there a way I can compel my brother to turn over the will so that I can petition the court for letters testamentary and handle the probate of my mother’s estate in accordance with her wishes?

THE ANSWER: It is unfortunate when there is no cooperation between family members when a loved one dies but it is not uncommon. If you have asked your brother about the will and he refuses to turn it over, file it with the court or provide any information about its whereabouts; all is not lost. You can ask the Surrogate’s Court in the county where you mother lived for an order compelling your brother to provide information about the will and to turn it over if he does, in fact, have custody of the document.

You should have an experienced attorney prepare and file with the court a petition to compel production of a will. The court will need the name and address of the brother you believe has the will, as well as the names and addresses of all other interested parties. The court also requires an original death certificate and a proposed order.

over to the court the original will must be served upon your brother. Your attorney then has the authority to question your brother about the will. If he refuses to cooperate with your attorney, your brother has a date certain set by the court to either turn over the will or explain why he cannot do so. The court can then decide how best to proceed.

Although your brother’s inheritance may be smaller if your mother’s will is probated than if an administrator is appointed, hopefully your brother will do the right thing when faced with a legally enforceable court order.

Splish Splash’s 30th season may begin a year later than initially planned, but with no shortage of excitement for the return of summer fun to Long Island.

The first step in this comeback campaign: hiring roughly 1,000 seasonal staffers to provide a clean, safe and fun experience for Splish Splash visitors.

24th annual ALS Ride for Life benefit set to honor late founder Chris Pendergast

ach year, 5,000 people in America lose their lives to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative neurological disease that ultimately leads to a loss of muscle control throughout the body. Beloved Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig and physicist Stephen Hawking were well-known for their public struggles with ALS, which often carries a hefty price tag because of the necessary medical care, home equipment and renovation.

The prognosis is unfortunately grim for all who are diagnosed with ALS, with most living less than five years after diagnosis.

But some do achieve surprising longevity.

Among them was Chris Pendergast, a Suffolk County educator and literal trailblazer who dedicated 27 years of his life to ALS awareness before his death last year.

In 1997, Pendergast founded ALS Ride for Life, a charitable organization known for its annual treks to raise awareness and funding for people with ALS, nicknamed “PALS.” The first Ride for Life in 1998 took more than two weeks as PALS in motorized wheelchairs journeyed from Manhattan to Washington, D.C. These days, the organization has a more local focus and the ride itself is shorter, covering Long Island only. But regardless of the changes, it was always Pendergast leading the way.

Each year, Ride for Life hosts a benefit honoring those with ALS and others who have made major contributions in the search for a cure. This year’s benefit, held virtually on April 28, will honor Pendergast’s great legacy as the organization looks to the future.

“Chris would want us to have fun as we remember him and to keep on enjoying life,” said Ray Manzoni, chairman and president of Ride for Life. “We want to make sure that the arrow that Chris launched all those years ago continues to fly. He created so much hope, and we still have work to do.”

The event will feature appearances from an eclectic group of performers with a little something for everyone, Manzoni said.

Emmy Award-winning anchor Elizabeth Hashagen of News 12 Long Island will emcee the evening. Performers will include musician Mike DelGuidice (on tour now with Billy Joel), comedian Bob Nelson and father-son Tik Tok duo Joe and Frank Mele.

Kelly, who is best known for his longrunning tenures on “What Not to Wear” and “The Chew,” grew up in Port Jefferson Station and graduated from Comsewogue High School. Later in life, he became friends with Christine Pendergast, Chris’ wife of nearly 50 years and a former physical education teacher at Comsewogue. “[Christine] is a really special person and her marriage to Chris was truly inspirational,” said Kelly, who now hosts “Self-Made Mansions” on HGTV. “Beyond that, a close friend of my family passed away from ALS a few years ago. And so I am happy to bring attention to this disease in any way that I can, as well as raise funds for patient care. I'm hopeful that scientists can find a cure for this debilitating disease sooner than later.”

Chris’ son, 36-year-old Buddy Pendergast, was in the third grade when his father was diagnosed with ALS. “As a family unit we were definitely put on an entirely different life path,” he recalled. “When my dad came to see that

his progression was remarkably slower than other people with ALS, he very naturally turned his energy toward advocacy, just as he had in the past for other causes he was passionate about, particularly education and the environment.”

To date, Ride for Life has raised more than $10 million in funding for research and support, and the organization’s efforts were instrumental to the creation of the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence at Stony Brook University Hospital. But Buddy also admitted his dad would have mixed feelings about the benefit focusing on him this year.

“To be honest, he would have rather focused on other people instead … He was more compelled than anyone I’ve ever met to make a difference, even if it was just for a small community. Ride for Life became one of the most influential ALS organizations, and it’s very much like an extended family, not just one person,” he said. “It’s about remaining hopeful and optimistic in what the future holds. He envisioned a future where all of our hard work will pay off to make ALS a thing of the past.”

Gallery North's Wet Paint Festival scheduled to return in June

Gallery North, 90 North Country Road, Setauket will present its annual Wet Paint Festival from June 5 to June 13.

Now in its 17th year, this annual, outdoor event is a celebration of plein air painting. The Wet Paint Festival provides the community with the unique opportunity to observe some of Long Island’s top plein air painters as they capture the area’s historic and natural beauty. Like last year, Gallery North will slightly modify plans for the festival. In an effort to maintain both the goals of the event and continued social distancing guidelines, the Gallery invites participating artists to create works in public or in solitude during the week of the festival.

Gallery staff will also visit featured locations to arrange a few, optional recorded “virtual visits.” Participating artists will have the option (not required) to work with staff to record a discussion of their process or an informal interview. These “virtual visits” will then be posted on social media and on Gallery

All participating artists will be featured in a pop-up exhibition at the Studio at Gallery North on June 18 from 3 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the exhibition in person in small groups. Spring brings back grilled fare DIRECTIONS:

If you’re like us, I’ll bet that while you’ve been out there doing your spring cleanup.

You’ve also uncovered the grill and spruced that up, too. Maybe you’ve been trudging out there all winter; if so, you’re braver than we are. We’re fed up (pun intended) with soups and stews and hearty fare simmering on the stove. Time for drafting that old grill into service and charring our way into spring fare … seafood, veggies, chops, chicken, burgers, baby back ribs and of course, steaks. Beyond the regular old faithfuls, here are a few recipes that are perfect for sliding scrumptiously into spring and the great outdoors.

Grilled Scallop Kabobs with Asparagus YIELD: Makes 3 to 4 servings INGREDIENTS: • 36 sea scallops, washed and patted dry • 24 thick asparagus spears, cleaned and cut into 3” pieces • 24 large cherry tomatoes • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste • 2 garlic cloves, smashed • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Preheat grill to medium-high (350 to 400F).

On barbecue skewers, alternately thread the scallops, asparagus and tomatoes. In a small bowl, vigorously whisk together the oil, salt and pepper, garlic and lemon juice, then discard garlic. Brush the scallops, asparagus and tomatoes with mixture, place on grill, close lid and grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, just until scallops turn opaque and everything starts to brown. Serve with mashed potatoes.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Apricot Glaze YIELD: Makes 8 servings INGREDIENTS: • Two 1-pound pork tenderloins • 1 generous tablespoon coarse salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper • Oil for grill • 3/4 cup heated apricot jam DIRECTIONS:

Rub tenderloins all over with salt and pepper, then let sit for an hour to come to room temperature. Brush pork with half the preserves, then grill and turn every 4 minutes and brush with remaining preserves until dark brown on all sides and meat thermometer

inserted in thickest part reads 130F, about 11 minutes. Let rest 5 to 10 minutes, then cut into half-inch slices. Serve with a mixed salad.

Grilled Potato Salad with Arugula YIELD: Makes 5 to 6 servings INGREDIENTS: • 1 1/2 pounds baby new potatoes, scrubbed • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil plus more for brushing • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 bunch arugula, washed and torn into bitesize pieces • 1 small red onion, finely diced

Grilled Pork Tenderloin DIRECTIONS:

Halve potatoes or leave whole, depending on size; place in pot and bring to a boil. Cook until barely tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly. Prepare grill on high heat.

Brush potatoes with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper; place on grill and cook, tossing occasionally, until tender and slightly charred, about 5 to 7 minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk together salt and pepper, oil, vinegar and lemon juice. In a large bowl, toss together the grilled potatoes, arugula, onion and oil mixture. Serve warm or at room temperature with meat, fish or poultry.

Basic research at BNL in the 1980s paved the way for Pfizer, Moderna vaccines

People around the world are lining up, and in some cases traveling great distances, to get vaccinations to COVID-19 that will provide them with immune protection from the virus.

An important step in the vaccinations from PfizerBioNTech and Moderna, the two messenger RNA vaccinations, originated with basic research at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the 1980’s, close to 40 years before the pandemic infected millions and killed close to three million people.

At the national laboratory, scientists including F. William Studier, Alan Rosenberg, and the late John Dunn, among others, worked on another virus, called the T7 bacteriophage, which infects bacteria. T7 effectively corrupts a bacteria’s genetic machinery, turning it into a machine that makes copies of itself.

Back in the 1980’s, Studier and Dunn in BNL’s Biology Department were trying to do something no one else had accomplished: they wanted to clone the T7 RNA polymerase. The use of this genetic region, along with a promoter that starts the process of transcription, enabled scientists to mimic the effect of the virus, directing a cell to make copies of genetic sequences or proteins.

The BNL researchers perfected that process amid a time when numerous labs were trying to accomplish the same molecular biological feat.

“Although there were several labs that were trying to clone the T7 RNA polymerase, we understood what made its cloning difficult,” said Alan Rosenberg, who retired as a senior scientist at BNL in 1996. “This is an excellent example of the value of basic science in that the practical applications were quite unanticipated,” John Shanklin, Chair of BNL’s Biology Department, wrote in an email.

“The goal of the work Studier and his team did was to understand fundamental biological principles using a virus that infects bacteria.

Once discovered, those principles led to a transformation of how biochemists and biomedical researchers around the world produce and analyze proteins in addition to providing a foundational technology that allowed the rapid development of mRNA vaccines,” he wrote.

Shanklin described Studier, who recruited him to join BNL 30 years ago from Michigan, as a mentor to numerous researchers, including himself. Shanklin credits Studier for helping him develop his career and is pleased that Studier is getting credit for this seminal work.

“I am tremendously proud that the basic research done in the Biology Department has been instrumental in accelerating the production of a vaccine with the potential to save millions of lives worldwide,” Shanklin wrote. “I couldn’t be happier for [Studier] and his team being recognized for their tremendous basic science efforts.”

Studier explained that his interests were more modest when he started studying this particular virus, which infects the bacteria E. coli.

“T7 was not a well-studied bacteriophage when I came to Brookhaven in 1964,” Studier, who is a senior biophysicist Emeritus, said in a statement. “I was using it to study properties of DNA and decided also to study its molecular genetics and physiology. My goal, of course, was to understand as much as possible about T7 and how it works.”

In an email, Studier said he did not realize the connection between his work and the vaccinations until Venki Ramakrishnan, a NobelPrize winning structural biologists from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, told him.

“I am pleased that our work with T7 is relevant for fighting this world-wide pandemic,” Studier wrote. “History shows that some of the most useful discoveries come from basic research that could not have been predicted.”

Several translational achievements originated at BNL, Shanklin wrote, including the thalium stress test for evaluating heart function, the development of Fluoro Deoxy Glucose for Positron Emission Tomography and the first chemical synthesis for human insulin, which allowed human insulin to replace animal insulin.

As for the effort that led to the T7 discoveries, Studier worked with Parichehre Davanloo, who was a postdoctoral fellow, Rosenberg, Dunn and Barbara Moffatt, who was a graduate student.

Rosenberg appreciated the multi-national background of the researchers who came together to conduct this research, as Moffatt is Canadian and Davanloo is Iranian.

Rosenberg added that while the group had “an inkling” of the potential usefulness of the processes they were perfecting, they couldn’t anticipate its value over the next 40 years and, in particular, its current contribution.

“Nobody really understood or thought just how widely spread its use would be,” Rosenberg said.

“We certainly had no idea it would be an important element in the technology” that would lead to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations.

Haiku

A great joy from spending time outdoors emersed in nature is the opportunity, afterwards, to share the experience with others. Directly recounting a memorable nature experience with a friend or family member, say, of an osprey successfully plunging from fifty feet high, with talons flaring, to hit the water and seize a fish, or a more gentle scene of watching a pair of monarchs dancing around a buttery yellow blossoms of seaside goldenrod is, of course, the most common way to share.

A more lasting way is through painting a favorite landscape, thereby providing a permanent record of beauty, wonder, and illumination. And then, there's the very popular alternative of sharing taken photographs.

Another way to share a memory is with the pen or keyboard and that's where my favorite way to memorialize a nature experience comes into play: writing a haiku about it. A haiku is a short poem typically structured to have three lines with the first and last lines containing five syllables and the middle containing seven, for a total of seventeen syllables. Haiku developed in Japan as far back as the ninth century but really took hold several centuries ago as a way to remember and celebrate nature.

What I've always enjoyed about writing haikus is that it requires your mind to distill the experienced moment into its essence, jettisoning extraneous material. This is, I find, not so easy to do.

After all, you have but seventeen words to tell a story. Oh, the value of discipline!

Any subject in nature can be the focus of a haiku. Why not give haikus a try?

Plants can be great haiku subjects too: Spring dogwood petals, Floating in woodland gloaming, Like lotus on pond A gift from a tree, A yellow and red leaf falls, Autumn has arrived.

Splitting sidewalk crack, bursts of chicory purple, the power of plants.

Next to birds I've probably written more haikus involving the ocean than any other topic: Miles from Island's end, Leviathan surfaces, Birds flock and fish leap.

A fishing boat plows, Through strong wind and crested waves, Wearing cap of gulls.

A grey green ocean, With waves made angry by wind, Hurls against the shore.

I find birds to be an especially appealing subject: Hidden in white pine, An owl hoots from the darkness, With North Star above.

Baseball wins third straight America East Series

The Stony Brook baseball team's recordsetting winning streak to open America East play came to an end Saturday, April 10. Maybe.* Regardless, the Seawolves won another conference series this weekend.

After having its 10-game winning streak to begin America East play halted with a 4-3 loss to UMass Lowell in Game 1 on Saturday, Stony Brook defeated the River Hawks, 9-2, in the nightcap to begin a new streak.

The Seawolves improved to 15-8 overall and 11-1 in America East.

In the disputed opener, reliever Josh O'Neill departed with a 3-2 lead and had been in position to earn his first career win after tossing a season-high 2 1/3 innings. He handed the one-run lead to Brian Morrisey with two runners on base and one out in the fifth.

Morrisey then coaxed a grounder to shortstop, which Evan Fox fielded and threw to second baseman Brett Paulsen for the forceout.

Head coach Matt Senk asked for an inningending double play to be awarded due to what he asserted was an illegal slide that included contact with Paulsen.

After a lengthy discussion, the umpiring crew declined. And Senk protested the game.

Gerry Siracusa immediately followed with a go-ahead two-run double for UMass Lowell that glanced off the glove of retreating left fielder Derek Yalon. The shot plated what proved to be the decisive runs.

O'Neill had replaced starter Brian Herrmann after two innings. Herrmann departed as a precaution, but is expected to remain in the

rotation next weekend.

Evan Giordano had hits in his first two at-bats. He then reached via error in the fifth on a play that had staked the Seawolves to a 3-2 lead.

That play snapped a streak in which Giordano had hits in seven straight at-bats and had reached base safely in nine straight plate appearances (seven hits, two walks).

The eventual defeat in Saturday's opener snapped Stony Brook's winning streak to begin conference play at 10 games. That was the best start to an America East slate in program history and matched the program record for a conference schedule. The 2001 Seawolves went 10-0 in the New York State Baseball Conference.

In Game 2, the Seawolves got right back on track.

Eight Stony Brook starters had hits in the nightcap. Only Fox did not record a hit. And Fox nonetheless scored twice, as did Paulsen, Johnny Decker and John LaRocca. Giordano and Paulsen had two RBIs apiece. LaRocca launched his third homer of the season — one shy of matching his career high for any collegiate season.

Starter Nick DeGennaro logged seven innings. He limited the River Hawks to two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 10.

DeGennaro has limited America East opponents to four runs (three earned) in 20 1/3 innings in three starts this season, good for a 1.33 league ERA.

"It's an outstanding job to bounce back in Game 2 from today's tough first-game loss," Senk said. "Nick DeGennaro led the way with seven stellar innings on the mound. Also, the defense was there throughout to back Nick up, along with a strong performance offensively up and down the lineup.

"It's never an easy task to go on the road, so to win today's second game and win the series is a great accomplishment."

Inside Lacrosse honors Kennedy, Ohlmiller as Midseason All-Americans

As the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team awaits its next game, a pair of standouts continued to accumulate individual honors on Thursday.

Inside Lacrosse named Ally Kennedy a first-team Midseason All-American and teammate Taryn Ohlmiller an honorable mention Midseason All-American during halftime of the ESPN Networks-televised Louisville-Duke game.

Kennedy and Ohlmiller both previously had been

named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list.

Kennedy ranks third in program history in career goals (232), 10th in assists (60), third in ground balls (155) and second in draw controls (303).

Ohlmiller produced a careerhigh-matching six goals in a 15-3 win against then-No. 15 USC on Feb. 23 and matched a career high with seven assists against UAlbany on March 20.

She has 20 goals and 32 assists this season.

STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY

Football cancels rest of spring season Stony Brook University’s spring football season is officially over.

The decision was made as the Seawolves’ last two opponents, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Rhode Island, both canceled their seasons due to COVID-19 issues forcing Stony Brook to follow suit after four spring games.

A statement was released on Facebook which read, “Stony Brook football respect the decisions of UNH and URI to end their spring football seasons," school officials said in a statement. "With those the only remaining games on our schedule, we now enter our offseason.

We appreciated the opportunity to play four spring games and look forward to our fall season opener.”

The team will return to practice over the summer and will open its season on Sept. 4.
