Reducing Stroke Risk for People with Atrial Fibrillation People with an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation (AFib) have a five-toseven percent increased risk of having a stroke compared to people without AFib. To help prevent strokes, blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin®) are prescribed. Most people do well, but some experience bleeding problems or have other reasons why blood thinners aren’t the best option. Dr. Eric Rashba, Director of the Heart Rhythm Center at Stony Brook University Heart Institute, explains how a device called WatchmanTM, which is implanted in the heart, can offer a lifelong solution for those dealing with this problem.

What does the Watchman implant do?

Watchman offers protection from strokes for people who have AFib that’s not caused by a heart valve problem. It provides an alternative to the lifelong use of blood thinners (anticoagulants) for people with AFib by blocking blood clots from leaving the heart and possibly causing a stroke.

Why are people with AFib at risk for stroke?

How does the Watchman implant work?

Watchman is officially named a “left atrial appendage closure implant.” In plain English, this means that it is a device that gets implanted into the LAA to block blood clots from leaving the heart.

The FDA-approved Watchman device is about the size of a quarter. When it is inserted into the LAA, the device expands like an umbrella so no blood can leak out. Then, over the next 45 days, cardiac tissue grows over the implant to permanently block off the LAA.

How is Watchman implanted?

At Stony Brook, Watchman is implanted by a multidisciplinary team in a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure done in the Heart Rhythm Center’s electrophysiology lab. With the patient under general anesthesia, we insert a small catheter carrying the Watchman device into the patient’s upper leg, and thread it up into the LAA. We use real-time echocardiograms and x-rays during the procedure to help ensure proper fit and placement of the device. Implanting Watchman takes less than two hours, and patients are able to leave the hospital after an overnight stay.

If a clot leaves the LAA, it can block blood flow to the brain and cause a stroke. More than

There are many reasons for moving back, but one huge reason is that I wanted a home where I could have a larger studio space and a yard for gardening. And being closer to my parents was a big factor too!

Cloning is a fancy word for making identical twins. Another fancy word is calling twins monozygotic, meaning that the two (or more) identical twins arose from a single fertilization of an egg that produced a mass of cells that split into two or more batches of cells, each batch forming an individual.

The Dionne sisters in Canada (five of them) were the most famous set of identical twins. Artificial cloning, or making twins in animals, began with the work of Hans Driesch in the 1890s. He used sea urchins to separate cells after fertilization, and the individual cells became identical twins.

A more surprising technique was developed by Robert Briggs and Thomas King in the 1950s; they used cell nuclei from early embryos to insert into enucleated eggs and make clones of frogs.

Ian Wilmut made Dolly in 1996, the first cloned sheep from a cell nucleus taken from the breast of an adult female sheep. Since then lots of animals have been cloned, including pet dogs and cats.

The leaders in this effort to commercialize animal cloning have been South Korea and China.

China has now taken the lead of combining gene editing (replacing one gene with another by microsurgical techniques called CRISPR-9). They believe this will change how research in human diseases will be done. They cloned a beagle after editing one of its donor cells to produce a medical condition of a form of blood vessel damage that leads to heart attacks and strokes.

The arguments for this are based on human welfare. By having a healthy dog as a control and its altered clone with the culprit gene to be followed in the course of disease, they have dogs differing in only one known gene. They can try methods to regulate that gene, isolate its gene product or functions as it creates a disease later in that dog or they can try using agents that might block the gene from acting or block the product of the inserted gene so it does not lead to heart disease or strokes.

Some people feel medical experimentation should never be done on animals,

only on consenting humans. Some feel it is cruel to be created not as a loved pet but as a “thing” to be used in research. Much of human conflict has been based not on conflicts of good versus evil but on the perceived goods of one faction against the perceived goods of a different faction.

I suspect that American (and some other countries) pharmaceutical companies wanting to avoid legislation banning animal cloning will just have that research done in China or other countries that do not recognize the rights of animals.

Living with contradictions is part of being human. We claim “thou shall not kill” is mandated to us, but we allow killing by intent in war, self-defense, execution of condemned prisoners and by neglect (low wages and a government that assumes health is a private matter and not the responsibility of government beneficence).

We could do the same with “thou shall not covet” and apply it to making money. Are not billionaires coveting money when they use lobbyists to change inheritance tax laws and place their money where it cannot be taxed and is shielded by legal loopholes?

The combination of gene editing and artificial cloning by nuclear transplantation will have major benefits in medicine for those diseases that have identified genes. For single gene defects this is about 2000 known birth defects and other conditions most parents would not wish to have afflicted on their children.

If humans do not prevent diseases by medical research, nature will take its toll in reaping the sick and disabled as it did for centuries until the era of modern medicine began with the germ theory, public health movements and the shift of medicine from an art to a science.

I much prefer having had my cataracts removed so I can now drive without eyeglasses than to find myself unable to read books and articles or be a menace on the road.

Understanding sources and concerns

BY PEGGY OLNESS The Suffolk County Legislature is the elected body responsible for public health and public safety, to maintain the county’s infrastructure (mostly roads and sewers) and provide assistance to those in need, for a population of 1.5 million people. The Legislature sets county policies, appropriates funding, levies taxes, reviews and adopts the annual budget and gives the comptroller authority to issue debt to finance capital projects and cash flow needs and issue bonds (incur indebtedness) for specific purposes.

By law the county must have a balanced budget: Revenue must equal expenditures. Also by law, it cannot tax income. Therefore, the county depends on other types of tax revenues, and in some cases borrowing, to meet the cost of the annual budget. The largest revenue sources (as you can see in the pie chart) are the sales tax, state and federal aid, real property taxes and various fees and grants.

It is important to remember that the annual operating budget is a plan for spending. Thus, during the year changes and adjustments must be made to the budget to accommodate what really happens to the tax revenue stream and necessary expenditures to meet the needs of the citizens (for example, a snowstorm).

While Suffolk County collects the taxes, not all of the tax monies collected go into the county’s general fund to pay Suffolk County expenses. The actual distribution of these revenues often involves other funds specific to programs or purposes.

An example of this is the distribution of the sales tax, which represents about 60 percent of the general fund revenue. Suffolk County collects 8.625 percent on most taxable items.

The county gives New York State 4.375 percent and keeps the remaining 4.25 percent, which it may distribute in several ways including: •By law, the Suffolk County Water Protection Fund receives a dedicated one-quarter cent (0.25 percent) of sales tax revenue, which goes to sewer rate relief, general tax relief, land acquisition (Suffolk County Environmental Trust Fund) and water quality protection.

•By need, the county may allocate up to 3/8ths of 1 percent (0.00375 percent) to the police district fund.

•New York State keeps 4 percent of its 4.375 percent sales tax from Suffolk County and gives the remaining 0.375 percent to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

State and federal aid money is received from New York State and the federal government to fund various programs and varies depending upon the program. The total amount varies from year to year.

Chamber music concert Real property taxes are imposed on property owners at a rate based on the value of their property. The New York State Property Tax Cap law limits the amount by which local governments and school districts can raise property taxes from one year to the next. Going over this limit (equal to the lesser of 2 percent or the allowable growth factor) requires a 60 percent vote by the government or district.

Another county constraint on the amount of real property taxes is that nearly a century ago the New York State Legislature enacted the Suffolk County Tax Act, which requires that the county general fund use the collected property tax revenue received to make all other taxing jurisdictions within the county (towns, schools, police and other county and noncounty taxing entities) whole even when property owners are delinquent in paying their taxes.

Certain aspects of this tax act create cash flow issues for the county and other local taxing jurisdictions. This problem is currently being reviewed by the Suffolk County Tax Act Study Committee to see what solutions may be possible.

In addition to the taxes on real property the county also collects revenue from real property tax items.

These include the revenue on the sale of defaulted properties; interest and penalties on unpaid taxes; and payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs), which are reimbursements for properties that are off the tax rolls because they are owned by the federal government or exempted for other reasons. These real property tax items sometimes contribute more revenue than real property taxes themselves.

Beyond the various legal constraints mentioned, sales tax and

property tax revenues tend to rise and fall with the economy since people spend less in bad times; this can place more burden, relatively speaking, on people with lower incomes. Due to the 2008 Great Recession, sales tax revenues dropped and have not recovered enough to produce sufficient revenue as county expenditures have increased. In 2017 county sales tax receipts grew by 4.28 percent but still came in $2.4 million short of budget projections. Therefore, the county has had to find other ways to generate more revenues.

The county has tried to solve the problem by increasing old fees and imposing new ones. Unfortunately, these new fees have not been enough, and since 2014 the county has had to borrow a total of $166.3 million from the Assessment Stabilization Reserve Fund (ASRF) to make up the shortfall.

In 2018, the county must begin paying back the ASRF. The new federal tax law, which took effect in 2018, may have significant effects on the county economy, thus leading to more uncertainty about budget projections in the coming year.

Preventing and treating glaucoma

Some supplements may increase risk

Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness in the world, behind cataracts. It is neurodegenerative (deterioration of the optic nerve) with increased intraocular pressure (IOP) — pressure inside the eye — as an indicator that nerve damage is more likely. The most common types of glaucoma are open angle and angle closure. Open-angle glaucoma represents about 90 percent of U.S. cases and is caused by clogging of the eye’s drainage canals over time (1). Because it develops slowly and over time, its symptoms are not always obvious.

By David inward to the cenDunaief, M.D. tral vision. If untreated, it can lead to irreversible blindness (2). The occurrence of this disease is rising, with an estimated three million Americans affected and a predicted level of roughly 3.4 million in the U.S. by 2020.

Fortunately, there are treatments. Some revolve around reducing fluid production in the eye, such as beta blockers and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Others work to increase fluid drainage, such as cholinergics and prostaglandin analogs. Still others do both (1). None of these treatments reverse lost vision or damage. They only slow or halt its progression to preserve your remaining sight. Therefore, prevention and early detection are crucial.

Glaucoma risk factors include age — starting at 40, although those over 65 have higher risk and those over 80 have the highest risk —and race, with AfricanAmericans at a five-times higher risk than those of European ancestry. In the Baltimore Eye Survey, a family history of the disease dramatically increased risk, with siblings having greater probability than offspring of developing the disease (3).

Other risk factors include steroid use, including asthma inhalers, eye injury, nearsightedness and hypertension. Finally, the higher the IOP, the greater the risk for progression in open-angle glaucoma (4).

Effect of increased visual field testing

In the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study, it was found that visual field testing by an ophthalmologist every six months for patients at higher risk was better at predicting disease progression than annual testing (5). The result was that, with more frequent testing, the researchers were 50 percent more likely to detect progression of the disease, if it were to occur.

Interestingly, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force currently does not recommend screening for open-angle glaucoma, since it feels there is insufficient evidence (6). The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends screening every two to four years starting at age 40,

with increased frequency of every one to three years starting at age 55 and every one to two years for those 65 and older.

More frequent screening is recommended for those who have more risk factors (7).

Preventative steps

There are several steps that may be valuable, including reducing chronic diseases associated with glaucoma such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and erectile dysfunction. If we reduce their incidence, there may also be a reciprocal decline in glaucoma. In addition, avoiding or reducing supplementation with iron and calcium, while potentially increasing magnesium, may decrease incidence of the disease.

Diabetes and high blood pressure

In an analysis of two studies, diabetes increased the risk of open-angle glaucoma by greater than 200 percent (8). In the same analysis, however, systemic hypertension (high blood pressure) increased the risk by a meager 7 percent. This is yet another reason we need to control or prevent diabetes to preserve eye health, aside from diabetic retinopathy (disease of the back of the eye).

Erectile dysfunction association

Those with erectile dysfunction (ED) had an almost threefold increased risk of also having open-angle glaucoma, compared to those without the disorder (9).

There may be vascular symptoms associated with open-angle glaucoma as demonstrated by the increased association with ED. The study suggests that the mechanism of action that both disorders have in common is endothelial dysfunction (inner lining of the blood vessels), which involves a decreased level of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator, which enables the vessels to expand and relax. ED was also associated with high cholesterol and blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. It is not unusual to find that many diseases have a common underlying pathology.

Supplements

A 2013 study found that supplementation with calcium and iron, looked at separately, increases risk of normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), glaucoma without increased pressure

(10). The calcium and iron came from a variety of sources, including antacids, multivitamins and prescription and nonprescription supplements. Roughly one-third of glaucoma patients have NTG (11). Among Japanese patients, a study found that this number increases to two-thirds (12).

The supplementation study results showed that participants who took a composite of 800 mg daily of calcium were at an almost 2.5-times increased risk. Those who took 18 mg of iron on a daily basis were at an even higher risk, 3.8 times, of developing the disease. When taken together, iron and calcium increased risk by a resounding 7.2-fold. Interestingly, dietary sources of iron and calcium were associated with lower odds of glaucoma.

The good news is that a dose of 300 mg of magnesium citrate in patients with NTG showed a benefit in visual field over one month, compared to those who did not take magnesium (13). Although this was a randomized-controlled trial, it was also very small with only 30 patients.

While there are risk factors — such as family history, age and ethnicity — that can’t be changed, there are a number of modifiable factors as well. Glaucoma may be brought on by factors that are related to those causing systemic diseases. Therefore, it’s important to maintain good health overall to reduce the risk for glaucoma and its effects.

We were fortunate to get a three-time history writer who’s been on the [New York Times] Best Seller list.” Kilmeade also spoke about his first history-focused book, “George Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution.” That book “hits home with us, living in the Three Village area,” said the TVHS president.

A lengthy Q&A and book signing followed. Kilmeade also graciously posed for photos. “History is always a subject we love to discuss and talk about at the Three Village Historical Society,” stated Healy.

“Without history, we don’t understand what makes us special and why so many from around the world risk it all to live and work here,” noted Kilmeade.

SBU Orchestra gears up for annual concert A musical adventure for the whole family

BY RITA J. EGAN The University Orchestra at Stony Brook University is preparing to take audience members on a one-hour musical adventure.

The ensemble will present its annual family orchestra concert, Adventures in Orchestral Music, at the Staller Center for the Arts on March 6.

Conductor Susan Deaver said the orchestra is planning a night filled with concertos from a variety of composers from all over the world such as America, Russia, Germany, England and Argentina. The list of songs include Mikhail Glinka’s overture to “Ruslan and Lyudmila,” Aaron Copland’s “Hoe-Down” from “Rodeo,” Morton Stevens’ “Hawaii Five-O” and John Williams’ “Star Wars Epic, Part II.” “They all sound different from one another, so it’s kind of different palettes of orchestral color,” Deaver said.

The conductor said the 70-piece orchestra consists of strings, brass, woodwind and percussion sections. While most of the musicians are college undergraduates, three are high school students who are part of the Stony Brook Young Artists Program. There are also a few graduate students who are nonmusic majors and five teaching assistants. The students’ majors range from music to biology, math and biochemistry. “The common thread is that they’ve all seriously studied music at some point,” Deaver said.

The night will feature a solo by 16-yearold violinist Mariana Knaupp, the winner of the 2017 Stony Brook Young Artists Program Concerto Competition. Mariana will perform the first movement of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G Minor, the piece she played for the competition, with the orchestra. “She sounded great, and she had a lot of poise as a performer; she played really, really well,” Deaver said. “We have a competition, and they’re all playing really well, but there’s something that usually points to one person.”

Mariana, who lives in Huntington and is homeschooled, has studied violin for 11 years with Thalia Greenhalgh and is part of the Stony Brook University Young Artists Program. The violinist is a member of the string ensemble Metrognomes, which performs a few times a year at nursing homes, sports venues and holds benefit concerts for disaster victims. For seven years, she also has been a part of the Gemini Youth Orchestra and has played at Symphony Space and Lincoln Center. She said she’s excited about her first time playing with a full orchestra and was surprised when she won the competition.

“I didn’t really expect to win because there were a lot of really good players involved,”

Mariana said in a recent phone interview. “It was a really nice surprise that I won, and I’m very excited to actually play with an orchestra because I’ve wanted to for several years now.”

Mariana said when her violin teacher asked her what she wanted to play for the competition, she knew she wanted a romantic concerto. She has been playing her chosen piece for a year now and said it’s a beautiful concerto that she’s looking forward to sharing with the family concert audience.

“I would just like to be able to play the concerto as the composer intended it and just convey what he would have wanted in a performance,” Mariana said. The violinist has enjoyed rehearsals with the orchestra and said when she attends college she hopes to major in math, English or neuroscience.

She plans on taking music classes as electives and playing with a university orchestra.

Like past family concerts, Deaver said the orchestra members will interact with the audience, talking with them about the different instruments and music. The musicians also have some surprises in store for attendees. “Myself and the orchestra, I think we are always energized by the audience because we’re interacting with them more, and it kind of breaks down any barriers that you might have,” Deaver said. “They’re really part of the concert almost, the audience since we’re interacting with them, I think we all feel really energized from it.”

Theatre Three’s ‘Nunsense’ is simply divine

heatre Three continues its 48th season with the heavenly musical comedy “Nunsense.” The show, which opened on the Mainstage last Saturday evening, catered to a packed house ready to sit back, relax and have some fun. And judging by the rip-roaring laughter all night, it did not disappoint.

With book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, the original Off-Broadway production opened in 1985 and ran for 3,672 performances, becoming the second-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history. By the time it closed 10 years later, “Nunsense” had become an international phenomenon, having been translated into over 20 languages with more than 8,000 productions worldwide.

Now the congregation has taken up residence at Theatre Three and although Catholics will most identify with this hilarious show, audiences of all faiths are sure to have their spirits lifted as well.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken are in a bit of a pickle. While 19 of the nuns are off playing Bingo, the convent’s cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, accidently poisons the remaining 52 nuns by serving them a batch of botulism-laced vichyssoise. As one nun quips, “For 52, bon appetite was also bon voyage.”

After a successful greeting-card fundraiser, 48 of the sisters are laid to rest.

Thinking there is plenty of money left over, Mother Superior spends the rest of the money on a plasma TV, leaving no money to pay for the last four burials. While the remaining deceased are temporarily stored in cold storage, five of the nuns decide to stage a variety show in the Mt. Saint Helen’s School auditorium to raise the rest of

the money. “We’ve just got to get those girls out of the freezer,” they lament.

Under the skillful direction of Jeffrey Sanzel, the show’s über-talented cast is given the freedom to bring out the strong personalities of their characters and have a blast doing it. At the beginning of the production, the group sings, “Though we’re on our way to heaven, we’re here to raise some hell.” Blessed with wonderful harmonic voices, great comedic timing and a seemingly inexhaustable amount of energy, they put on quite a show.

The incomparable Phyllis March plays uptight Mother Superior Sister Mary Regina who loosens up quite a bit at the end of the first act in one of the funniest scenes in the play, and Linda May is wonderful as the second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert who has higher aspirations.

TracyLynn Conner is hilarious as the wide-eyed Sister Mary Amnesia who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. “She just a big mess,” mutters Mother Superior under her breath. Conner steals the show with her duet with a puppet in “So You Want to Be a Nun.” Sari Feldman is Sister Robert Anne, the streetwise understudy from Brooklyn who “Just wants to be a star” and finally gets the chance to shine brightly in Act Two. Jessica Contino rounds out the cast as the sweet Sister Mary Leo who dreams of being the first nun ballerina.

The brilliant script is full of hilarious puns — “How do you make holy water?”

“I don’t know, how DO you make holy water?” “You boil the hell out of it!” — along with double entendres and every nun joke out there. The wonderful songs, 20 in all, are accompanied by the terrific Mt. Saint Helen’s School Band under the direction of Steve McCoy.

A nice touch is the constant audience participation, which is strictly voluntary.

Before the show and intermission the nuns greet the patrons and pose for photos, and during the show the audience takes part in a quiz with a chance to win prizes. A short film by Ray Mason and Sanzel starring the five sisters of Hoboken in the second act is just the icing on the cake. From the initial Mt. Saint Helen’s cheer to the final amen, “Nunsense” is simply divine and should not be missed.

Enjoy a drink at Griswold’s Café on the lower level of the theater and take a chance at 50/50 during intermission. The theater, more specifically, the nuns will be collecting donations for Hurricane Maria on behalf of Direct Relief at the end of the night.

Sponsored by Bridgehampton National Bank, the production is dedicated to the memory of Carolyn Droscoski who passed away suddenly on Feb. 5 at the age of 61.

“Our hearts and our stage will be a little emptier.” Droscoski was a constant presence at Theatre Three, appearing on the Mainstage, cabaret and children’s theater for over 40 years. According to the theater’s website, the actress appeared Off-Broadway and traveled the country in the various incarnations of “Nunsense” and is one of the few actresses to have played all five roles.

Theatre Three, located at 412 Main St. in Port Jefferson, will present “Nunsense” through March 24. The season will continue with “12 Angry Men” from April 7 to May 5 and the musical comedy “Curtains” from May 19 to June 23. Avocados get top billing

For those of you who managed to get away for a midwinter vacation, chances are that if it was some place warm, the avocado figured into your diet. For those of you who remained home, chances are that right about now you’re fantasizing and dreaming about that season when you are in a warm climate and the avocado and other summery staples will figure into your daily fare.

I was recently in Los Angeles where movie stars are celestial, traffic is hellish and avocados seem to take top billing on every restaurant menu. Not just guacamole, but avocado salads and smoothies, tortillas, tacos and toasts, pestos, panini and pies, melts and mousses. It’s no wonder that the avocado — with 240 calories, no cholesterol, lots of fiber and vitamins and a rich creamy texture — is so popular with those health-conscious Californians.

Here are my versions of some avocado dishes I enjoyed.

YIELD: Makes 2 to 4 servings INGREDIENTS: • ½ avocado, peeled, pitted and cut into chunks • 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro • 1 tablespoon sour cream or plain Greek yogurt • ½ tablespoon fresh lime juice • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil • ¼ small chipotle pepper, chopped • Coarse salt and black pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS: In bowl of electric food processor, puree all ingredients together until silky smooth.

Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Serve with fish, poultry, burritos, tacos, burgers or chips.

Avocado, Cheddar and Chicken Melt YIELD: Makes 4 servings INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup mayonnaise • ¼ cup ketchup • 2 scallions, thinly sliced • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian parsley • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro • 1 grilled or sauteed half-pound boneless, skinless chicken breast • 2 ripe avocados

• 4 whole wheat or multigrain English muffins, halved and lightly toasted • 8 slices heirloom tomato • 8 large thin slices cheddar cheese, about ¼-inch thick • Salt and pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS: In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, scallions, parsley and cilantro.

Cut the chicken breast into four even pieces, then horizontally into 8 thin slices. Peel the avocados, remove the pits and slice each one into quarters. Preheat broiler.

Meanwhile, spread the mayonnaise mixture evenly onto each toasted muffin half; top with a slice of chicken, then the avocado, tomato slices and finally the cheese.

Place in broiling pan and broil three inches from heat until cheese melts, about one and a half minutes. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve with Caesar salad and chips or fries.

Seafood and Avocado Salad YIELD: Makes 6 servings INGREDIENTS: • 8 large shrimp, peeled, deveined and cooked • 1 pound cooked lobster meat, coarsely chopped • ½ pound sea scallops, cooked and sliced • ½ pound calamari, cooked and sliced • One celery rib, thinly sliced • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • Juice of one lemon • Sea salt and black pepper, to taste • 4 ripe avocados, peeled and pit removed • One head butter or Bibb lettuce, washed, dried and torn into bite-size pieces • 2 cups baby arugula DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl combine the shrimp, lobster meat, scallops, calamari, celery, olive oil, half the lemon juice, salt and pepper. Slice avocados, spread out on a plate and sprinkle lightly with remaining lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.

Discard any extra lemon juice that collects in bottom of plate or save for another use.

Line a serving plate with lettuce and arugula; place avocado slices around edges, then turn seafood mixture onto center of plate. Serve immediately with a dry white wine and a good crunchy baguette.

You also are known for your etchings, which have been described as having a whimsical charm to them. Would you explain what etching is to people who may not be familiar with that art form?

I see that you were trained in Italy.

What was that experience like?

It was a living fantasy! Shortly after graduating from college, I saved up enough money to live and study in Italy at a school for fresco painting, a process of painting on a freshly applied, damp surface with water-based pigments. I do few frescoes these days, but the process of layering and building up color all continue to inform my work today.

Did you study art conservation?

Yes, in Italy and also in New York City where I spent time apprenticing at a painting conservation studio from which I developed an appreciation for using archival materials.

Some have said that your landscapes in oil have a peaceful feeling to them. How would you describe them, and how are they different from other oil painters?

I try not to make an exact replication. I say that my paintings are representational, but not realistic. I attempt to evoke a calm mood, a setting or a sort of dreamscape.

I am very sentimental about Long Island,

Etching is one of the oldest methods of printmaking dating back to the 15th century. It is a technique involving a metal surface such as zinc or copper, and an acid-biting material that “eats” or “etches” into the surface creating a design or image. To print, ink is rubbed into the etched lines, and, with paper, it is run through a press. The image is then transferred to the paper, but in the reverse form. It is much more involved, but this is a simple version.

The background of your etchings often have what is called Chine-collé? Can you tell us about that technique?

Traditionally Chine-collé was used to create a tonal background for an etching using thin tissue or rice paper. The paper and the printing of the etching are run through the press together to create the finished image. Through experimenting, I have updated the technique using origami and patterned papers to achieve a colorful background for my subjects.

Your mother is the much-admired artist Flo Kemp. How has she influenced you growing up?

My mom, master etcher that she is, taught me quite a bit about etching, and we still spend time in the studio together. I lived and breathed her work for so long, it naturally manifests itself in my work too. Mom has always encouraged and supported me along the way, providing me with etching advice and giving me business advice too.

I realize how much I enjoy processes and techniques, and how much they inform the style of my work. These will continue to influence the evolution and progression of my art.

SBU’s Anil Yazici seeks solutions for the elderly

Anil Yazici wants to help the elderly population with transportation, public safety and emergency services and housing.

An assistant professor in civil engineering at Stony Brook University, Yazici is organizing a series of meetings to address the needs of the elderly. He is recruiting a host of speakers from around the world and is inviting the public to listen and participate in roundtable discussions for a two-day event at the Hilton Garden Inn at Stony Brook as a part of a Research Coordination Network.

Yazici received a $499,999 four-year grant from the National Science Foundation last fall to develop a way to study the connection between smart and connected communities and areas with varying resources and population densities.

The group will host workshops at the University of Michigan and at Florida State University.

The goal is to maintain mobility and access to services for the aging population. “Our focus is to involve aging populations within smart and connected communities … which generally employ technology to address mobility and access,” he explained in an email.

Yazici would like to get the government, communities and researchers to work together to address these issues. Groups involved in the effort will produce white papers, which can provide a proposal to help governments and community organizations plan various services.

Women’s lax ranks No. 1 after victory SBU

Stony Brook’s women’s lacrosse won its third-straight contest over a nationally ranked opponent to begin the 2018 season Feb. 25, topping No. 20 University of Denver 16-3 in the Seawolves’ home opener. After the win, for the first time in program history, Stony Brook women’s lacrosse ranks No. 1 nationally in all three major polls.

Redshirt senior Courtney Murphy led all scorers, tallying six goals and one assist. Senior Kylie Ohlmiller added six points on four goals, two assists.

“Today was another statement win for us,” head coach Joe Spallina said. “That’s a very good Denver team — they’re going to win a lot of games this year. I thought our team came into today’s game really focused. We had a good week of preparation, and a couple of really good practices leading into today and we were just dialed in.”

Stony Brook scored a season-high 16 goals, as nine Seawolves recorded a point in the win. The Seawolves led 7-2 at halftime. Stony Brook went on an 8-0 run,

half. The Seawolves outshot Denver 30-14, registering 15 shots in each half of action.

Stony Brook’s defense forced 17 Denver turnovers, and goalie Anna Tesoriero made five saves.

“I loved the way we played defensively,” Spallina said. “We spoke about playing more of a complete game. For me, we’re passing the eye test. We’re at our best when we’re making stops on defense and transitioning the ball into our attack.”

Senior Kylie Ohlmiller scored twice in each half, and her younger sister Taryn Ohlmiller registered a goal and four assists, giving her 17 points over the first three contests of the season.

Keri McCarthy scored her first two goals of the season, adding one assist for three points. Ally Kennedy and Rayna Sabella each scored her first Stony Brook goal. Samantha DiSalvo had a team-best five draw controls.

The Seawolves return to action March 3 for a noon nonconference matchup at Northwestern University. Stony Brook returns home March 17 for a 5 p.m. game against Towson University.

Stony Brook baseball earned the program’s 1,000th victory with a 12-0 win over host Norfolk State University Feb. 25.

The Seawolves (6-1) earned the sweep of the three games in Virginia with the first shutout of the season. Sophomore righthanded pitcher Brian Herrmann picked up the win, his second of the season, and senior lefty Kevin Kernan, freshman right hander Nick Insognia and sophomore right hander Brandon Bonanno finished the combined six-hitter.

Stony Brook’s offense exploded for 14 hits, including a careerbest four by junior first baseman Michael Russell and three from sophomore outfielder Michael Wilson. Wilson also drove in three runs and hit safely in the last six games.

Stony Brook broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third inning and added three more runs in the fifth to break the game open.

With the win, the Seawolves improve to 18-11 overall, 10-6 in America East heading into the conference tournament.

The program has now won 10 of its last 13 contests in America East play.

“I thought our group really grinded this game out today,” Stony Brook head coach Caroline McCombs said. “We had to keep working together to keep our offense going, but it was our defensive effort that really came on strong in the second and third quarters that gave us some momentum. I’m proud we stayed focused and were able to overcome adversity on the road.”

LIM named as Imagine Awards semifinalist

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook recently announced that it has been chosen as a semifinalist in the 6th annual Imagine Awards, which recognize innovation and leadership in the nonprofit sector.

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created as a way to showcase the nonprofit sector and all the good work that it does, as well as provide opportunities for deeper collaboration within the sector. The event acts as an opportunity to meet new people, discover new organizations doing business on Long Island, develop new relationships and learn from the organizations that are being honored.

As a semifinalist in the Arts & Cultural Award category, the LIM is recognized for the development and implementation of its Rides for Kids program, which provides subsidized transportation and reduced rates for underserved school districts. Schools in these districts struggle with budget restrictions that prevent them from taking part in important educational programs outside of

the classroom. “The museum is honored to be considered for this prestigious award and to also be considered in such fine company as the other semifinalists,” said Neil Watson, LIM’s executive director.

The LIM’s school programs support New York State and national learning standards in art, social studies and language arts, offering visual and hands-on activities, especially beneficial for children who do not thrive in traditional classroom environments. Since its inception in 2013, the LIM Rides for Kids program has served more than 6,500 students in districts all across Long Island.

The Long Island Museum is among six semifinalists in the Imagine Awards Arts & Cultural category. Other organizations recognized for their innovative programs in the category include the Cinema Arts Centre and Huntington Arts Council in Huntington. Winners will be announced at the 6th Annual Imagine Awards Ceremony on May 1 at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY From Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. Changes are taking place all around as Long Island works to improve today and plan for tomorrow. Stony Brook University is a significant driver of success for the region. A recent study by the Long Island Association shows that Stony Brook University has a $6.4 billion economic impact on the regional economy and is responsible for almost 50,000 direct and indirect jobs. In addition, the output of our graduates has an international impact of $15.3 billion annually. As one of the top 62 research institutions in North America, as evidenced by our membership in the Association of American Universities, Stony Brook continues to bring innovation and discovery to Long Island and the world and is proud of the positive impact that we are having on our students and our communities.

Partnerships with prominent research facilities are leading to important discoveries. For example, the University worked with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory to develop a new low-cost material for seeing in the dark, potentially changing future military nighttime operations. Another example is a collaboration with Brookhaven National Laboratory, resulting in a recent discovery that could lead to better lithium-ion batteries. Esther Takeuchi, SUNY Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering and Chemistry, has shown that the findings could help batteries for everyday items such as cellphones charge faster and last longer.

Construction is underway at the Research and Development Park for the Innovation and Discovery Center (IDC) , scheduled to open in spring 2019. We appreciate the support of Senators Ken LaValle and John Flanagan in helping to secure funding. The Center will provide lab spaces for the commercialization of scientific breakthroughs and the growth of high-tech ventures through collaborations between the University and private sector enterprises. Expected research areas include biotechnology, information technology, electronics and advanced materials. Along with groundbreaking innovations, the IDC will draw companies and jobs to the area.

Stony Brook Medicine continues to expand its services in response to the growing healthcare needs of our Long Island neighbors. The Advanced Care Center, which opened last year in Commack, offers 30 medical specialties and is flourishing with patients seeking easily accessible and convenient treatment. We have been on the front lines managing the flu epidemic and urge you to practice good health habits to avoid getting or spreading the virus.

I am particularly pleased that our four-year graduation rate has reached a record high of 58.4 percent. This is an increase of almost 4 percentage points over last year, and 11 percentage points since we committed in 2014 to improve on-time graduation rates. That’s about 1,000 more undergraduates that have graduated on time over the past few years. Equally important is that our $126 million in federal research expenditures for FY17 ties a record high from FY05, and our total research expenditures of $238.6 million also represent a record high. Unfortunately, we are currently facing significant budget challenges due to a lack of state funding for contractual salary increases coupled with government-allowed tuition increases that are less than the higher education cost of living index. Accordingly, we are cutting costs while endeavoring to maintain the academic and research excellence for which we are known.

As always, we welcome community members to visit campus for classes, events, shows, games and lectures, but we recognize that there are parking challenges at certain times of day. So we are evaluating our on-campus parking lots and their impact on campus and local traffic patterns and expect to have recommendations to be considered by the end of the semester.
