High school students with an interest in government have an opportunity to visit Albany and see lawmakers at work.

The Smithtown League of Women Voters invites high school students 16 years of age or older who live in the Town of Smithtown to apply for a unique government-inaction program.

The annual Students Inside Albany competition brings together junior and senior high school students from across New York to learn firsthand about the legislative process and the means by which citizens can effectively participate in the policy-making process. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, selected students take a three-day, all-expense-paid trip to the New York State Legislature to observe government in action, meet with legislators and participate in mock sessions.

There is no cost to the selected students. The conference will be held May 20 to 23, beginning on Sunday and ending on Wednesday afternoon.

Sarah Adamo, a Smithtown High School West senior, was the 2017 winner of the annual Students Inside Albany competition.

Interested students should compose an essay stating why they would like to participate in this forum on government and provide background on studies and activities that support their candidacy for this special opportunity. Included with each application

TOWN Wehrheim takes reins as Smithtown supervisor

BY SARA-MEGAN WALSH SARA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Supervisor Ed Wehrheim (R) took his oath of office Jan. 1 on the outside steps of Patrick R. Vecchio Town Hall promising that his election marks the start of a new beginning for Smithtown.

“Today, a new year begins for Smithtown standing united as a township,” Wehrheim said. “Together we begin a new and exciting era for our community — one that is to be built upon communication, teamwork and social responsibility.”

His inauguration ceremony on New Year’s Day was marked by a special honor guard salute coordinated by the Town of Smithtown’s various volunteer fire departments in joint effort with the law enforcement officers from Smithtown Public Safety. The units coordinated the salute independently, making a point of standing together to symbolize their support for the new incoming administration.

“The support from our community and our fellow elected officials on the steps of Town Hall was heartfelt and genuine today,” said Councilman Tom McCarthy (R). “Knowing we have the resources and the approval from our constituents to pursue plans for making Smithtown the best place to raise a family or thrive as a small business is essential for success. We are

McCarthy and Councilwoman Lynne Nowick (R) both swore new oaths of office as they were re-elected to another term.

However, Wehrheim’s step up to the office of supervisor leaves a vacant seat on the five-person board.

“I am supporting Tom Lohmann for that position,” Wehrheim said.

Lohmann was Wehrheim’s running mate

in Smithtown’s Republican primary, were he lost the party’s nomination to McCarthy and Nowick. The Smithtown resident received 5,394 votes, or 9.31 percent, in the general election running on the Conservative line; coming in last out of the six candidates.

Lohmann had expressed in November that he was extremely disappointed with the election results.

“I stood up because the two incumbents that won re-election, in my opinion, didn’t do

their job,” Lohmann told TBR News Media in November. “For the next four years, they better be in town hall, they better be working with the supervisor, they better be working with our chambers of commerce and civic groups, they better be driving our town forward because I am going to be watching.”

Wehrheim said he stands by his desire to appoint Lohmann to serve as a council member in his place until November’s general election, when he would have to run a campaign for the seat.

“He presented his platform to thousands of residents because we ran together in that campaign in the primary and general election,” the new supervisor said. “He addressed face-to-face the residents of this town, took their questions, answered those questions, and he has an extensive background. I know he’s a lifelong resident who has nothing but Smithtown’s best interest at heart.”

In order to be appointed to the board, Lohmann will need to get the vote of three out of the four elected board members, who are reviewing the resumes of several individuals for the position, according to Wehrheim, who would not disclose the identities of the other interested parties.

The new supervisor said he hopes to appoint someone at the Jan. 9 annual reorganization town board meeting, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Town Hall.

Sini sworn in as Suffolk’s new district attorney

BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Though calendars and thermometers will provide unmistakable evidence that spring is still several months away, new hope sprung eternal in Suffolk County Jan. 2.

Tim Sini (D) was officially sworn in by U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York), the Senate minority leader, to begin his tenure as Suffolk County’s district attorney, a position Sini captured with a 26-point landslide Election Day victory over his Republican opponent Ray Perini.

Sini officially assumed the vacated position Tuesday, left open by his retired and federally indicted predecessor Tom Spota (D), during an inauguration ceremony at the Brentwood campus of Suffolk County Community College in front of town and county elected officials and friends and family of the new DA. Sini campaigned on restoring public faith to a position and office now synonymous with controversy and accusations.

Speakers including County Executive Steve Bellone (D), former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York David Kelley and co-chairman of Sini’s campaign and transition team and the newly inaugurated DA himself, each referred to his responsibility in restoring that faith as a primary objective during his time on the job.

“The prosecutor’s mission at its core is

not to seek convictions, but to seek justice,” Bellone said. “It is like many things that this person of deep faith believes to his core. Unfortunately in Suffolk County for too many years and in too many instances this truth has been overshadowed by self-dealing and chicanery. I can tell you with certainty, with as much certainty as one individual can hold, that this chain is broken today — that a new era of integrity in the Suffolk County district attorney’s office has begun.”

Though their time in the Eastern District of New York didn’t overlap, Kelley served as the head of the U.S. Attorneys office, where Sini was an assistant U.S. attorney before returning to Suffolk, where Bellone eventually appointed him police commissioner. During his remarks, Kelley cited a quote from a 1935 Supreme Court decision in which members of the court took a prosecutor to task for his conduct, indicating the quote was particularly relevant for Suffolk County and should remind Sini of his duties ahead.

“The prosecutor is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all, and whose interest, therefore, in a criminal prosecution, is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done,” Kelley recited from the court’s findings. “As such, he is in

The theme of Sini’s message during the ceremony was to look forward.

“Today marks the beginning — marks the moment that together, we usher in a new era of criminal justice in Suffolk County, one that ensures public safety, champions the law and promotes faith and trust in our law enforcement agencies,” he said.

“Each and every day the public will know that the Suffolk County district attorney’s office is doing the right thing.”

Maggie’s Mile raises $10K for cancer research despite cold

BY KAREN FORMAN The bitter cold weather didn’t stop approximately 500 courageous souls who braved the -2 “feels like” temperatures to run Maggie’s Mile at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on New Year’s Day. Kieran Gibbons, a member of Northport Running Club, stood alone at the starting line while hundreds of runners huddled indoors at the Sunken Meadow Golf Course Clubhouse waiting for the race to begin.

“I am a longtime friend of Maggie’s family,” Gibbons said, “and this is a healthy way to start the New Year and raise money for pediatric cancer research.”

According to Steve Schmidt, “The event raised nearly $10,000 for the nonprofit Maggie’s Mission,” which will donate the funds toward research of malignant rhabdoid tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering in memory of his daughter, Maggie.

Greenlawn teen Maggie Schmidt was only 16 years old when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, malignant rhabdoid tumors, in October 2016. She died after a nine-month battle June 1, 2017.

Many who took part in Monday’s event were members of the Northport Running Club, of which Steve Schmidt and other family and friends are members.

“After everything Steven and Donna and the family went through, we wanted to come together as a community to support them,” said Erica Fraiberg, a member of the running club.

Fraiberg finished second in the women’s division with a time under 6 minutes. The top two finishers were Alex Eletto, 20, of Stony Brook, for the men’s division who finished the mile-long course in 4:48 and Amanda Scanlon, 38, of Northport, who finished in less than 6 minutes.

Maggie’s father, a third-grade teacher at Maplewood Elementary School in South Huntington, ran the race dressed as Father Time with support from his students. Eightyear-olds Priscilla Kenny and Michael Ferdinando are in Schmidt’s class this year and came to run Maggie’s Mile, along with Michael’s older brother Joe, age 10.

“We love our teacher,” Michael said. “We

wanted to do this. We made our shirts for the race. We have to run for Maggie’s Mission.”

Schmidt’s son, also named Steve, 20, proudly displayed a freshly inked tattoo on his arm for his late sister. He recalled how he and his dad were hiking out West in August 2016 when they got a call that Maggie was in the emergency room at Huntington Hospital.

“Maggie had internal bleeding,” he said.

“They thought she had a burst cyst and that she would be fine.”

The late Greenlawn teen was still bleeding after surgery and had to be transferred to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital, according to her brother, where she then underwent a second surgery within three days and

multiple blood transfusions.

For more than two months, the Schmidt family ushered their daughter back and forth to the ER and to various doctors, without a firm diagnosis of what was wrong.

It wasn’t until October 2016 when Maggie underwent a third emergency surgery during which doctors found the multiple tumors in her abdomen.

“We need to raise money to fund more research,” the brother said. “We have almost no information about this disease.

It’s so rare, that there aren’t enough cases.”

Student collects 179 coats for Long Island Cares

He felt a drive should be organized to collect outer garments for all ages and sizes, so he started one of his own.

“I thought if we do a drive for any type of coat it would help more people,” Holden Cone said.

Police officer struck by stolen car A Suffolk County patrol sergeant from the 4th Precinct was struck by a vehicle reported earlier as stolen from Ridge.

Officers from the 4th Precinct found the stolen 2008 Ford F-350 pickup truck occupied by a man and woman in the parking lot of NY Sports Club, located on Jericho Turnpike in Commack.

As an officer and a patrol sergeant approached the pickup truck from the side, the operator attempted to flee, according to police, backing out of a parking space and struck the sergeant in the left hand with the snowplow attached to the truck.

The vehicle was then driven forward toward the sergeant who, fearing for his life, fired two shots, which struck the vehicle, police said. The vehicle continued forward, jumping the curb, then exiting the parking lot, but became disabled a few blocks away. The two occupants of the truck ran

off but were apprehended by responding patrol units after a brief foot pursuit, according to police.

The driver, James Connor, 35, of Ridge was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault, third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. The passenger, Alesha Labosco, 32, of Ridge was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

The patrol sergeant was treated for his injuries and released from St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.

Connor and Labosco were scheduled for arraignment at First District Court Dec. 30 in Central Islip.

Police said the investigation is continuing.

Police said a man allegedly stole two doorbell security cameras from Target, located on Henry Road, and threatened an employee

The Knox School

Wrapping holiday joy

The Knox School crew team joined forces with the Nissequogue Fire Department Dec. 18 to support the local community through a toy drive and gift-wrapping marathon.

Starting at the school, student-athletes raised money through a bake sale and other campus fundraisers to buy gifts for children that would be delivered to Toys for Tots. After wrapping their donations, the group traveled to the fire department to help their team of elves with their Partners for Happiness toy drive that would benefit a local homeless shelter in Brentwood.

Together, these Nissequogue neighbors hope to make this holiday season a bit brighter for underprivileged boys and girls within the local community.

“This year, my goal was to have our students-athletes become more involved with giving back to our local community,” said Monika Zdrojewska, coach of Knox’s crew team. “So when the opportunity to collaborate with the Nissequogue Fire Department for a holiday toy drive arose, we were thrilled to support our neighbors’ great efforts. We hope to continue the tradition next year.”

Singing joyfully

The fifth-graders at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District worked to brighten the day for residents at St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center Dec. 19.

The classes walked to the facility from their school to spread holiday cheer with their Christmas carols.

The students marched up and down the halls singing some of the holiday classic tunes. They delivered handmade greeting cards and ornaments to help spread holiday spirit to the center’s residents.

Fourth-grade students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had an in-depth look into American Iroquois history courtesy of Journeys Into American Indian Territory Dec. 19.

The students rotated through different stations throughout the day during the in-house field trip, learning about the ways of the Eastern Woodland Indians. The students took a “museum tour” in the gymnasium, looking at different hunting spears and weapons and touching different types of animal skins. They learned about the tribe’s hunting and building techniques and even had a chance to spend time in a longhouse. The students also learned about the role of women in the tribe and tried their hands at grinding corn.

Radoslav Andacic, of Smithtown, died Dec. 13. He was the devoted husband of the late Nera; loving father of Marijan Andacic and Eva Andacic; cherished grandfather of Emma Nera, Ana and Rado James Andacic; and dear brother of Draga Skegro.

Destructive defense wins it for West

Defense was the differencemaker in a game of crosstown rivals Jan. 2.

Smithtown West held host Smithtown East to just 17 points through the first 16 minutes of play, and outscored the Bulls 31-14 in the second half to nab a 56-31 League II win.

“We always play hard — we’ve held our opponents to the least points in the county per game for the last two years,” said Smithtown West point guard Chris Crespo. “We play defense, and that’s how we win games.”

Smithtown West’s Michael Gannon sparked the offense midway through the third quarter, draining his third 3-pointer of the game to put his team out front 3218. Smithtown East struggled to contain the big man in the paint, where Crespo would consistently feed the 6-foot, 6-inch power forward, who battled his way to the rim time and time again.

“In this league you can’t sleep on any team though,” Gannon

said, despite his effort. “Anyone has a good shot at winning no matter who you play.”

The Crespo-Gannon combination was too much for East to contain, and Gannon banked 10 of his game-high 26 points in the final eight minutes. Crespo finished with 11 points.

Smithtown West head coach Mike Agostino wasn’t surprised at some points of the contest, saying he’s come to expect great things from Crespo and Gannon.

“Our point guard Chris [Crespo] is pretty good at getting the ball to the open player,” Agostino said. “He can find people, and he found Michael today and he was making shots.”

He said he thought the end result wasn’t indicative though of what his team is really made of.

“They’re very good, and they make you uncomfortable defensively — they throw you out of rhythm,” Agostino said. “We haven’t practiced for two days, and mentally you’re not out of rhythm, but physically you are, because you have to shoot every day.”

Crespo still thought his challengers fought hard, saying he

wasn’t surprised by the Bulls’ caliber of play, as both teams grew up together and know each other well.

“We know a lot of these guys, so you know what you’re getting, but when we play North Babylon or Copiague, it’s coach Agostino and coach [John] Tampori who do a fantastic job of prepping us before the game,” Crespo said. “[At]practice, they show us what to expect.”

Smithtown East head coach Keith Reyling said his team’s performance was not what he’d hoped it’d be for this point in the season. Atop the scoring chart was James Peters with nine points and John Cawley with six.

“We don’t ever expect to get out-worked, and we were severely out-worked by the other team tonight,” he said. “That’s uncharacteristic of us. We’re usually a hardworking, blue collar type of team, so it was disappointing to see that they worked so much harder than we did.”

Smithtown East will look to redeem the loss when the Bulls hit the road to face Huntington Jan. 5 at 5:45 p.m. Smithtown West is scheduled to be back in action on

to her. Brazier says that’s always how her teammate plays. But the junior’s main focus is to face Commack again in Ward Melville territory.

“The loss brings us motivation to come back and go harder and beat them next time,” Hansen said. “We’ll bring a crowd next time, too.”

With Prahalis as the opposition to Commack, she enjoyed battling in her old stomping grounds.

“It felt good,” Prahalis said. “Ward Melville is my home now. I love Commack, I grew up there, but I’m where I’m supposed to be.”

Ward Melville’s next game is at Brentwood Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. The Patriots fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss while Commack improves to 7-1. The Cougars travel to William Floyd Jan. 5. Tipoff is currently scheduled for 4 p.m.

Former WNBA player, Commack graduate and current Ward Melville girls basketball coach Samantha Prahalis was frustrated and emotional on some calls the referee made while facing her alma mater Jan. 2. She received two technical fouls and was ejected in the middle of the fourth quarter in a 75-59 loss.

“I thought [the referees] missed a lot of calls,” Prahalis said. “If you let a few travels go, let a few backcourts go in a crucial time — we’re trying to come back, [and] there were a few big calls that I didn’t think were made.”

This is Prahalis’ first year as Ward Melville’s head coach. She was embarrassed that she was tossed, and said she has to do a better job of maintaining her composure.

“I can’t put myself in a situation and get a technical, and then [to] get another one,” she said. “Lesson learned. I learned from it and we’ll learn from it as a group and we’ll move on.”

Ward Melville junior guard Lauren Hansen felt that Prahalis was in hostile territory facing her old team.

“I felt that the refs were just gunning for her,” she said. “It’s Commack environment.”

Commack assistant head coach Russ Tietjen was with Prahalias at Commack last year when she was an assistant. He is aware of her emotions on the court that translated to her emotions as a player at Commack.

“Sammy was a great player here and you can see her intensity as a coach is very similar to when she played,” Tietjen said of Prahalis. “She had a Ward Melville team who was

ready to play; they played hard. That’s what good coaches do — they get their teams to play hard.”

Commack had several offensive weapons with four players scoring 16 points or more.

Meanwhile, for Ward Melville, Hansen recorded 39 points and was the only player in double figures for the Patriots.

Junior guards Amanda McMahon and Katie Kelly lead the Cougars with 18 points each. Senior Casey Hearns recorded 17 and classmate Kim Shalhoub added 16. They combined for 69 of Commack’s 75 points.

“We have a group of great shooters and we like to push the tempo,” Tietjen said. “When you’re making your baskets, it looks good. It looked good today. The level of competitiveness in these girls is second to none.”

Kelly enjoyed going up against her former assistant head coach. She says it ramps up the competition.

“Sammy is a very good competitor and loves to win as much as we do,” Kelly said. “It just makes the atmosphere that much better to play in. It make us want to win even more.”

Kelly’s learned her game from former player and point guard Jillian Spagnuola who graduated in 2016, when the team went 22-1.

Kelly is doing her best fill Spagnuola’s shoes.

“I learned everything from Jill,” Kelly said about her play style. “I learned how to run the point and organize the offense.”

After being down by at most 30, the Patriots went on a big run in the four quarter and cut the deficit to 12 after Prahalis was ejected. Senior forward Shannon Brazier said her coach ignited the spark.

“We just weren’t going to go down without a fight,” Brazier said. “We wanted to do it for coach and wanted to come back for her.”

Hansen’s scoring prowess is nothing new

Zeldin visits troops overseas for holidays

Financial inspiration Suffolk County’s Legislature passed a law that will create a public financing system for candidates seeking elected offices in the county.

The bill will also create stricter limits on the amount of funds they can raise and spend. The overall goal of the legislation is to open doors for more candidates. If signed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) in the next few weeks, the new law, modeled after election funds implemented in many parts of the country, will take effect beginning in 2021 for the majority of county candidates and 2023 for those running for county executive.

This past election year we met many newcomers to the political scene, some of whom said they were inspired by the 2016 presidential election. Creating a fund for those who may not have access to big donors is a great idea, which may provide more options when it comes to voting on Election Day. In an age where candidates seeking office have been criticized for accepting donations from wealthy, influential corporate heads and special interest groups, we feel the bill is a step in the right direction toward more allegiance to those that elected officials represent — the voters. Having the option to receive money from a public fund will hopefully inspire people to run for office who might not have otherwise.

If Bellone signs the bill, for those who wish to receive public funds, raising and spending of money on campaigns for county positions will be limited to $100,000 in total for an election, or in the case of county executive, $2 million. The bill restricts the maximum amount from one source to $1,500 for a legislative campaign, or $25,000 for county executive. Currently, candidates can receive anywhere from $1,600 to $3,000 from one source depending on their district; the new executive limit is approximately $20,000 less than in previous years.

A fund will also be set up for candidates who raise at least $5,000 in small dollar donations of $250 or less from residents in their district, essentially allowing for the public financing of Suffolk elections. The fund will allow those running for office to receive up to $50,000 in a 4-to-1 matching money. For county executive candidates, he or she must raise at least $25,000 from contributions of $250 or less for a 4-to-1 match up to $250,000.

The matched funds will come from the county’s share of the profits from Suffolk Off-Track-Betting. According to the county’s 2016 annual financial report, OTB’s capital asset net was $26,714,106. Due to the county’s current deficit, many criticizing the bill feel the money could be better utilized elsewhere. While we agree there are many areas the OTB funds can be used, this is one way to raise the money for the matching election-funding program. Considering that the new process may open the doors to a broader range of candidates, our hope is that this incentive will bring new and better solutions to the county in regard to the financial crisis and other issues in the near future.

It was an honor to have just spent my third consecutive Christmas in the Middle East with our nation’s troops and diplomats stationed overseas.

In 2015, I joined our service members in Iraq and Kuwait, and in 2016, I visited them in Afghanistan and Qatar. This past Christmas, I traveled to Afghanistan, Kuwait and Jordan.

It is not easy for our deployed men and women to spend the holiday season thousands of miles away from home, having great family and friends missing them around the Christmas tree or Hanukkah menorah. For many of our deployed military and diplomatic personnel, this isn’t their first holiday season away from their loved ones.

It is my highest honor to be able to personally thank all of them for their tremendous sacrifice on behalf of a grateful nation. Serving them their Christmas Day meals, letting them know how much they are appreciated and receiving their critical feedback are the absolute least I can do to make sure they know countless Americans are thinking about them, praying for them and filled with enormous gratitude for their incredible sacrifice.

Each and every time I visit our troops abroad, I return with some of the greatest memories of my life and critical knowledge to guide my decisions throughout the halls of Congress. It is the brave men and women I have had the honor to meet over the last three Christmases that further cement my commitment

to ensuring our nation’s troops have everything they need to safely and effectively do their jobs and return home.

In this year’s National Defense Authorization Act, I voted for a 2.4 percent pay raise for our troops, their biggest pay raise in eight years. Additionally, this year’s NDAA included a much-needed strengthening of cyberoperations, funding Department of Defense cyberoperations at $8 billion, an increase of $1.7 billion from last year.

Investing in cybersecurity tools ensures that our troops have the 21st century resources they need to combat ever-evolving terror threats at home and abroad.

Furthermore, this year, I voted for the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, which provides a total of $658.1 billion for the DOD, including critical resources to defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups. Our nation’s servicemen and women on the ground put their lives on the line each and every day for the freedoms and liberties that make this country the greatest in the world, and they deserve nothing less than our full support.

However, our commitment to our troops continues after they leave the battlefield. When they return home, we must ensure they have our full support in transitioning back into civilian life. In September, I reaffirmed my commitment to ending veteran homelessness by introducing legislation that helps decrease veteran homelessness through continued funding of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

Ensuring our homeless veterans have shelter and a safe place to live should never be a partisan issue. Even one homeless veteran is too many.

Throughout my time in Congress, one of my top priorities has been ensuring our nation’s disabled veterans receive the health care they have earned. In 2017, my legislation to expand care for disabled veterans on Long Island and across the country passed both the House and Senate and hopefully will soon become law. My legislation would ensure disabled veterans receive the best and most efficient outpatient services to provide them with the assistance and special attention they need in their day-to-day lives, while still allowing them to maintain their independence through access to adult day health care.

These programs allow veterans to lead a much more fulfilling life and helps keep families together and strong while simultaneously reducing overall health care costs for the veteran.

These brave men and women answered the call to service and repeatedly put their lives at risk to support and defend our Constitution and ensure the safety and security of our country. I will never stop fighting for our nation’s veterans, our troops on the ground and the families back home who eagerly await their safe return. They have earned nothing less.

Trump trips cost taxpayers Here we are, almost a year into Donald Trump’s term as president and he has spent 100 days at his family’s properties.

In November, USA Today reported that he spent 34 out of 45 weekends at one of his properties. The exact cost is hard to pinpoint, but between costs of Secret Service, travel and reimbursements to local jurisdictions, this travel is estimated to have cost U.S. taxpayers $100 million in 2017.

Not only is he costing taxpayers $100 million, but much of that hard earned taxpayers’

money is being funneled directly into his family’s businesses in the form of room and board for Secret Service and golf cart rentals.

We’d all, possibly, be OK with this, if he really does “make America great again.” But so far, he has been unable to get much of anything accomplished in government other than a tax cut where most of the savings go to the wealthy — including his family. Does anyone really think Trump is an answer to the corruption in Washington, D.C., or to the limited number of

good paying jobs? His campaign promises have fallen flat — just ask steel workers who are still being laid off, or all of us who have still seen stagnant wages.

Donald Trump is perhaps the greatest con man we have seen in the past 50 years. He has convinced us that he has our best interests at heart despite his long record of cruelty, bankruptcy and stiffing small business owners. So far all that his presidency seems to produce is more money for the Trump family businesses.

“He’s up there,” the young man said, pointing to the escalator. “If you hurry, you can catch him.”

We took back our passports and immediately kicked into a higher gear.

We got to the bottom of the escalator and scanned the room. Wait! Could it be? Yes! The man, who is beamed into our bedroom on an occasional evening when we’re not watching sports, was standing in front of us under a baseball cap, waiting, as we were, for his luggage so he could move on with his famous life.

What is it about celebrities that makes us stop in our tracks, that raises our pulse, that makes us want to take out our cameras, pens and paper, and rush over to them? Do we want to share the spotlight? Do celebrities define an era, the way winning sports teams do?

Most unscripted celebrities seem considerably less interesting or com-

pelling than they do when they’re battling against evil empires, winning our hearts with their humble charm or learning to overcome their limitations.

It’s what makes those award shows so fascinating, compelling and terrifying. What if one of these actors who has impressed us with his gravitas suddenly freezes in the camera or, worse, says something we find objectionable?

What if they aren’t as wonderful as the characters they play?

We watched Colbert as he dove deep into his electronic device, head down, hat pulled low. He rarely looked up because he probably didn’t want anyone to “make” him, the way police officers make a suspect.

As Colbert exited, my phone rang.

I spoke to the person who was picking us up, hung up and snapped a picture of the talk show host, who looked displeased that my phone was tracking him.

I suppose being a celebrity has its advantages and disadvantages. People might otherwise extend themselves for you, hoping to share in the spotlight or

become friends. The downside? People want to capture their live moment with you, when you are eager to glide past the unwashed masses.

Long ago, I remember reading an anecdote about Robert Oppenheimer.

After people learned of his role as the creator of the atomic bomb and leader of the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was asked his opinion on a range of subjects. People attached greater weight to his opinions, even in areas for which he had limited information. The man who helped split the atom limited his responses to future questions, preferring to remain anonymous in areas outside his expertise.

Today, with cameras everywhere and people eager to learn about the view of the world from on high, being quiet or ducking under a hat must be increasingly challenging. Yes, I know people like Colbert make incredible amounts of money, but I also appreciate how difficult it must be to stay incognito while rushing home with several loads of laundry.

research and repeated urgings in the media, data reveals that most Americans are sleep deprived. With so much to do each day, it is too easy to cut down sleep time. That might work for a day or two, but research shows that it is not possible to make up for lost hours in the long term. So don’t use your computer just before you go to bed, don’t even watch TV. Something about the light from those home essentials interferes with the urge to sleep.

Try to go to bed more or less the same time each night and wake up the same time each morning. Habit is a great helper. And if you tend to wake up in the middle of the night with the many chores you have for the next day ping-ponging around inside your head, put the bedside light on, make a to-do list with a pencil on a pad you have ready next to your bed, then turn off the light, and having discharged your memory, you can fall back to sleep until morning.

Another good thing to do is to eat foods with lots of fiber. “A diet of fiberrich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, reduces the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Indeed, the evidence for fiber’s benefits extends beyond any particular ailment,” according to a recent science article by Carl Zimmer in The New York Times.

People who eat more fiber simply have lower odds of dying. Somehow fiber is able to reduce inflammation in the body. Long-term inflammation can cause harm, although short-term inflammation does fight infection. How fiber works is a bit of a mystery because it is not directly digestible. There is a connection between fiber and the billions of bacteria that live in our guts. In essence, we feed our microbes fiber to enable them to strengthen our immune systems. Take it on faith and don’t ask me more.

One issue that is, of course, most distressing to me is that of fake news.

Be assured, please, that whatever you might read in our hometown papers and on our well-read website, is fact and as true as we know it to be. If we err, we will correct.

Let’s keep in mind the old Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. It may be a negative for some, but for journalists, it provides jobs.

Sleep, eat and be well in 2018

No more Christmas celebrations, no more vacation days, no more New Year’s parties, we’re back to the real world. And what a real world it is. The North Koreans have a button.

We have a bigger button that works.

Meanwhile both leaders have strange haircuts.

Primarily young people are rioting throughout Iran as the rulers threaten a violent crackdown.

The war in Afghanistan, our longest war, slogs on, with no end in sight. Brutality, death, starvation and proxy wars rage throughout the Middle East and northern Africa.

By contrast, here in America, more people line up to sue Harvey Weinstein for sexual harassment or worse each day. Icons fall, Democrats and Republicans squabble, Republicans and Republicans squabble, governors and accountants strategize how to navigate the new tax laws, and we in Suffolk County are warned to hunker down in the face of a fierce and imminent nor’easter bringing tons of snow.

Enough already! Here’s what I say to all of that. Let’s focus on the things we have some hope of controlling and stand by to help with the rest. What do we actually control? We can start with ourselves.

On the threshold of this new year, we can pay more attention to our health. Everyone quite rightly wishes friends and family “a healthy and happy New Year.” Good things start with good health. Wishing won’t make it happen. Action will.

Most important, to me, along with lots of health professionals, is enough sleep of good quality. This strengthens the immune system, cognitive function and minimizes wrinkles — well, the first two anyway. Yet despite the
