Well, we are still busy packing. How is it this is such an endless job! And it’s been crazy over the last two days. So sorry I haven’t reached out sooner - but a HUGE THANK YOU! Our dream house is beyond our dream house. I can’t get over how great the place makes us feel - I am instantly at home. And it only proves how important and impactful your environment is. Yesterday when we were there we saw a coyote in the background. Then we saw a rabbit - thank goodness it was in that order. I’ll be putting my desk together today and can’t wait to have that view for work. So thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts. We were a little nervous when we weren’t finding anything that made us go wow - and then questioned, yikes are we doing the right thing. Oh my goodness - did we ever do the right thing! - Irene & Matt

Thanks so much for your hard work and persistence in dealing with the agent for the clients who bought my place. I am fairly certain this was the fastest sale in our complex in all the years I have been here:) The staging, the reno, cleaning and decluttering made it look fabulous! Thanks again to you and your team I would be happy to refer all of you to anyone I know who is in the market for a buy or sell. - Judy

4 YOGA STRETCHES FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP Reach for better rest when you add these bedtime yoga poses to your sleep routine. By Steve Calechman

Before the pandemic, 25% of Americans suffered from acute insomnia every year, according to a 2018 study from the University of Pennsylvania. We can only assume that number has gone up. Bills, chores, work, technology, and now a global pandemic all conspire to keep our brains constantly on, when sleep needs the opposite. We try anything in order to settle down and let go of the day, from cups of tea to writing in a journal. Here’s one more approach to consider: mindful movement. Many studies have linked yoga with better sleep. Harvard Medical School sleep and circadian

health expert, professor Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, notes that experimental trials have also shown meditative breathing can be a powerful sleep aid. Khalsa has researched how meditative breathing can help with sleep, insomnia specifically, and he found that it increased sleep time and decreased wake time. The study had its limitations. It used a particular breathing pattern: inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 16, and exhaling for 2, but Khalsa says that he can make a larger recommendation. Slow, mindful breathing at around 3–6 breaths per minute - normal is 15 - 20 - could be effective for falling

asleep. “Anything that slows down the breathing rate will help with decreasing arousal,” he says. And since most mindful movement and yoga poses are done with some form of slow breathing in this range, “putting two and two together, it makes sense,” he says. And as Khalsa adds, there’s no reason to wait for double-blind studies. The fundamentals for any bedtime routine are consistent. One needs to unwind the mind and the body, so the autonomic nervous system is quieted down and the production of stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol, decrease. The slowdown also needs a certain

time investment. “While there isn’t a magic combination of poses, doing yoga certainly falls into those parameters.” It’s gentle. It’s relaxing. And, most especially, it’s lying down, and “You can’t fall asleep standing up,” Khalsa says.

3. SPINAL TWIST

Bottom line: There’s little downside to trying and only positives to gain. YOGA STRETCHES TO HELP YOU SLEEP Jennifer Reis is a certified yoga therapist, faculty member at Kripalu Center for Health & Yoga, and creator of Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra. She suggests four poses, all done lying down, which can help encourage sleep. Do each for a minimum of five exhalations, having your mouth in an O-shape in order to elongate your breath. 1. BRIDGE

Lie on your back with arms out in a T formation and palms up. Start with bend straight legs, then your right knee and bring right foot onto your your left leg wherever it feels comfortable. Gently press your right knee to the left with your left hand, twisting your torso. You may feel a stretch in your shoulder, chest, lower back, hip, or thigh—it will be where you most need it. Return to the centre and do the other side. 4. LEGS UP THE WALL

Lie on your back and bend your knees with your feet close together but not touching. With your arms along your sides and palm facing up, press your feet into the floor, reach your tailbone to your knees, and lift your hips into the air, tucking in your pelvis and using a block or cushion for support underneath your lower back if preferred. This position opens up your hips and quads and allows you to observe your belly as you breathe. 2. SUPPORTED FISH

Lie on your back with a pillow supporting your shoulder blades. Position your arms out at 45 degrees from your hips with your palms up. You can keep your legs straight or have your knees bent and togetherwithyourfeetslightlyapart.Thiswillhelprelax your upper-back muscles and stretch your chest.

Lie on your back with bent knees and move your buttocks as close to the wall as possible. Bring your legs up the wall, lift up your hips, and put a pillow under your lower back to keep your pelvis off the floor. Keep your feet apart a few inches and relaxed. After a day spent standing or sitting, your legs will feel lighter and your body will feel more balanced overall.

HEALTHY AND HEARTY FALL RECIPIES

HEALTHY SLOW COOKER TURKEY AND WHITE BEAN CHILI Made wit ground turkey, bell peppers, smoky chipotle peppers, white beans and served with sharp cheddar cheese and avcado. A feel good, hearty and cozy dinner.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil • 2 small yellow onions chopped • 4 cloves garlic, minced or grated • 2 pounds ground turkey or chicken • 2 chipotle pepers in adobo, finely chopped (use 1 pepper for less heat) • 2 tablespoons chili powder • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground ciminnamom • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 2-3 cups low sodium chicken broth • 1 can (28 ounce) crushed tomatoes • 1/4 cup tomato paste • 1 tablespoon apple butter • 2 bay leaves • 1 can (14 ounce) white beans, drained • cheddar chesse, avacado, green onions and cilantro for serving. I couldn’t think of a better recipe to kick the month off than this healthy slow cooker turkey and white bean chili. Nothing beats a slowly simmered chili on a cold October day. Made with ground turkey, bell peppers, smoky chipotle peppers, white beans, and served with sharp cheddar cheese and avocado. This bowl of chili is a hearty, healthy

and cozy dinner that you can feel good about eating. How much do you guys love chili? It’s always been one of my favorites come the fall, but growing up the only chili I ever knew was Cincinnati style chili. If you’ve never experienced Cincinnati chili, it’s just a thicker chili served over angel hair pasta. It is my mom’s favorite. To this day, the only way she will eat chili is over pasta and topped with cheddar. The only way… so yes, when I gave the family this chili to try, she indeed ate it over pasta.

chili peppers, chili powder, and my secret ingredient, apple butter. I know it may seem weird to use apple butter in chili, but the sweetness balances out the spice of the chili. Go with me on this, promise it takes the chili to a who would have known delicious level.

cooking you do, nothing will be the same as slow cooking a chili all day long. It gives the chili time to develop flavour and creates the most wonderful smells throughout your house. I highly recommend making this for Sunday night dinner and then enjoying the leftovers throughout the week. Perfection.

Anyway, point is, I didn’t grow up eating bowls of chili. So making a soupy style chili feels like something completely new and different to me. I’ll always love Cincinnati chili, but I also love today’s healthier chili probably just as much. To start, you’ll want to brown the ground turkey on the stove-top. You can also use ground chicken, both will work equally great. I know that this extra step is a bit of a pain, but trust me, when working with ground meat it’s a step you have to take. On that note, I recently got a slow cooker that can also brown meat before you begin slow cooking. It’s a game-changer. I highly recommend investing in an all in one browning slow cooker if you love slow cooking. Brown the meat, add all the remaining ingredients to the slow cooker and set for six or so hours. Then come home to the most delicious smells and dinner that’s ready for eating. Does not get better than that. To bump up the flavors of my chili, I used a mix of chipotle

Finish each bowl off with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese, sliced avocado, and green onions. And serve with the 5 ingredient Honey Butter Beer Bread from the cookbook. A bowl of chili is not complete without beer bread. Also, while I am providing you guys with Instant Pot directions, I much prefer this recipe to be made in the slow cooker if time allows. No matter how much pressure

Vacations Far & Away Trout Point Lodge, Nova Scotia By Amy Rosen - Special to the Globe and Mail The moon tonight is in the waxing gibbous stage,” says Rémi Torrenta, Trout Point Lodge’s staff astronomer and naturalist. “It’ll be full in a couple of days.” He pulls out a laser pointer as we stand together on the stargazing platform. We’re surrounded by fall’s colourful foliage, albeit muted by nightfall, but that’s okay because we’re here to talk about the stars and patterns above. “The Summer Triangle is made up of the three brightest stars from three different constellations,” he says. “And Vega,” he adds, now aiming his laser at a big white star, “is the brightest star tonight.” Torrenta is so full of information that I have trouble concentrating, so instead, I breathe in the almost -full moon and the silence of nature. Trout Point Lodge, tucked into East Kemptville, beside the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve, may look like a cabin in the woods, but this small luxury lodge is a hotbed of experiences, from nature to culinary. It’s also a certified Starlight Reserve. In other words, it’s the perfect

place to live (albeit temporarily) and learn. Earlier in the day, I eased myself into a wood-burning hot tub beside the babbling Tusket River; nearby, 11 giddy painters from Australia committed the fall colours around us to their watercolour pads. I went forest-bathing with Torrenta, a sort of nature therapy where you slow things down and take it all in. We sat on a footbridge and slowed our breathing. I watched as a red maple leaf fluttered from a tree into the river, wound its way around rocks and floated away under the bridge. I canoed and also took an edible nature walk with Torrenta, where we dug up and nibbled on treats from the forest detritus, including starflower, white sarsaparilla and winter green. I learned that practically everything edible in the woods is a diuretic or blood congealer and also delicious. Guests can enjoy a soak in a wood-fired outdoor cedar hot tub.

Back up on the stargazing platform, Torrenta says there is no light pollution in the area so we can currently see up to 3,000 stars and deep sky objects. The lodge has mega-telescopes on hand - we rolled ours down the boardwalk in a wheelbarrow - but even with the naked eye on a clear night in the Biosphere Reserve, one can spot faraway galaxies. Tonight, the sky is unusually bright because of the moon, making it a touch difficult to pinpoint many of the celestial wonders. “The moon is the enemy of astronomers,” Torrenta says. Be it the magic of the moon or my room’s wood-burning fireplace; the fact that there were four types of homemade butter with my lunch; or the local gentleman strumming songs by request at the wee bar at night, every little thing about Trout Point Lodge adds up to something big. I fix my gaze skyward, smiling.
